It's hard to make friends when you're as quiet as you are. Thankfully, Sun and Moon are here to help! Or...at least try.

Sometimes it felt like he did this on purpose.

Because every time Sun came to see you, his wires looked like something that made the “tangled earphones” gag look like child’s play.

Every. Single. Time.

You huffed as you picked at the mass of tangled cords, searching for a place to start unravelling it all. Sun squirmed anxiously as your hands moved around inside of him, his own fists balled tightly at his sides.

“Th-The kids got a little rowdy today!” He sputtered with a nervous laugh. “You know how they can be, especially when there’s Fizzy Faz involved. B-But it was nothing a few Moondrops couldn’t fix…!”

As if on cue, you heard the soft jingle of bells behind you. Moon lowered himself down from the ceiling, perching curiously (at least, you figured it was curiosity) on your tool-bench. You could feel him leaning over your shoulder, watching silently as you worked away at the stringy mess lodged in his twin’s chest cavity.

“Oh, hi Moon!” Sun picked his head up off the table just a bit before letting it drop back down with an audible metal thump. You winced at the noise. “I’d wave, but—pesky arm clamps and all that!”

“Safety precaution.” Moon mumbled. The sound of his voice was far too close to your ear.

You tried your best to ignore it, instead focusing on finally managing to wrangle one of the wires free by the skin of your teeth. With a sigh of relief, you brushed the hair out of your face. This was going to take you a while.

“Yeah, I know.” Sun replied with a huff, “B-But! I’m not dangerous! Besides, we’ve got all those safety precautions in place, specifically to keep us from hurting guests and staff. So, even if I wanted to hurt someone, I couldn’t! In theory, anyway.”

That…did not make you feel any better.

“Could always make it look like an accident.” Moon added helpfully, shifting his weight in a way that made the bells on his ankles jingle with the movement. “It’s pretty easy.”

And that really didn’t make you feel any better.

Sun let out an appalled gasp. “I would never…!”

There was a brief pause. “Well, I mean, I wouldn’t usually, anyway.”

“You could.”

“I could…but I won’t!”

“Coward.”

“Am not!” Sun’s rays flared defensively, and his chest puffed at the accusation, causing you to yank your hands back as the metal pieces inside of him shifted. “I—Oh, sorry! Sorry, sorry, sorry! Gosh, you’re so quiet, I almost forgot you were there! Are you okay? You’re not hurt, are you? I have band-aids if you need one!”

“I’m…fine.” You sighed, pulling off your hat to wipe the sweat from your forehead. “Just…be more careful, please.”

Safety precautions aside, it wasn’t just whether he wanted to hurt someone that you had to worry about. Which was a weird thing to think about in and of itself, considering Sun and Moon were robots, and weren’t supposed to have wants and needs at all, but—regardless.

They could hurt people without even meaning to. (You’d heard about what happened to the previous technicians, despite the company’s desperate attempts to hide it all. And you didn’t want to end up on that list.)

“Okay…sorry.” You couldn’t help the little pang of guilt that hit you in the chest at the way his rays drooped down. He looked like a scolded puppy. Even Moon had shuffled back just a bit, his eyes cutting nervously between Sun and yourself as he shifted his weight from foot-to-foot.

It almost looked like he was dancing, which was much more adorable than it should have been.

“You’re—it’s fine. Just try not to get too riled up. Maybe talk about something less…uh.” You waved your hands in the air, struggling to come up with the right words. “Something different.”

“Well, what do you want to talk about?”

You blinked. “Me?”

“Yeah!” Sun nodded emphatically. “I know I come in here a lot—like a lot, hoo boy—but we never really talk much? You’re so quiet! I don’t know much about you, other than what’s in your employee profile.”

You didn’t know they had access to that. Did…Did all of the animatronics have that in their files? With your name, address, phone number…how much info of yours did they have?

“But that’s surface level stuff,” he gave a little nervous giggle and half-shrug, as best he could with his arms still strapped down. “And I want to know more about you! We both do!”

“…Why?”

You were just a technician. One of many. Not even a higher-up position, just a basic techie. Or someone who worked in the main building—you did most of your work in the back rooms. You weren’t as…important, as the others. At least, in your opinion, you weren’t.

“Caaaaaause,” he drew the word out in a sing-song matter, rays fluttering around his head in a way that made them look like the petals of a flower unfurling, “we’re friends!”

There was a small pause.

“…Aren’t we?”

“Uh.” You blinked. “Yeah. Sure.”

“Sure.” Moon echoed, snickering. “Sounds very convincing.”

He gave an exaggerated sigh and shrugged. “Don’t think they like us much, Sun.”

“Oh…” You could see Sun visibly wilt, and it sent another pang of guilt twisting through you like a bolt of lightning.

“It’s not that.” You admitted nervously, fingers trembling as you continued to pick and pull at the ball of wires. It felt like the more you tried to get it untangled, the more tangled it got! “I just…feel like I don’t have much common ground with you guys.”

“Oh? Well, that’s easy to fix! We just have to find one!” The rays around Sun’s head spun in a little circle.

Moon had moved from hovering over you to sitting on the edge of the table with his legs swinging over the edge. The bells on his ankles jingled with every little kick, his head bobbing from side to side to some invisible tune.

“Do you like games?”

He sounded so genuinely curious.

God, that was cute.

“It depends on the game, I guess.” You paused. “Do you mean like, games like tag and stuff? Or like video-games, or…?”

“Mm, either or!” Sun replied, giving another little shrug. “But between you and me, I kind of prefer video-games. They don’t result in nearly as many messes. Or, uh, accidents.”

He tilted his head down at his open chest cavity with a nervous giggle.

“Yeah, I get that.” You nodded understandingly, then glanced back at Moon. “What about you?”

His head cocked to the side with an audible click, fingers drumming along his cheek as he crossed one leg over the other gracefully. “Mm. Prefer physical games. Tag. Hide-and-Seek. They’re more fun. Don’t get to play them much, though.”

The emphasis he put on the word sent a little pang of pity through you. “Well, uh…you ever tried VR games? They’re physical, kind of. If you like Hide-and-Seek, I bet you and Sun would have a lot of fun with, uh…”

You snapped your fingers as you struggled to think of the name. “Panoptic! It’s very similar to Hide-and-Seek. But a lot more fun, in my opinion. And Beat Saber. It’s mostly a one-person game, I think? But still really fun, cause you get to swing the controllers around a whole lot. But outside of VR, I have a ton of co-op games in mind that I bet you guys would love.”

Moon leaned forward, his eyes practically glittering with interest. “Share.”

“Okay, so there’s Portal Co-Op for one, which is like a fun puzzle game set in a huge lab. Another is Super Bunny Man, which is a lot sillier, but like a really fun puzzle-obstacle course type game. And then there’s—”

Okay, maybe it was a little embarrassing how many co-op games you knew about. Considering you never really got a chance to play any of them. Mostly because you had no one to play them with.

Cuphead. Kirby. Snipperclips. A Way Out. Overcooked. It Takes Two.

There were a ton of games on your “Wish I Had Someone to Play With” list, and though you weren’t sure if you’d ever actually have the chance to play them, it still felt nice to talk about them with someone else.

In fact, you’d spent so much time talking about them that by the time you zoned back in, you’d managed to untangle the whole clump of wires without even realizing it.

“Oh. Well! Looks like we’re done!” You gave a breathy, nervous laugh. “Sorry for talking your ears off like that. I just kind of…start to ramble when it comes to games I like.”

“I think that’s the most I’ve ever heard you talk!” Sun chuckled. As the wrist and leg cuffs retracted, he pulled himself into a sitting position and stretched, letting out a little groan of relief. “Thanks for that, I feel better already!”

“And for the...recommendations.” Moon added.

“Oh, uh, you’re welcome.” Your cheeks burned a bit as you reached for the check-off list. “Don’t feel pressured into playing any of them. They were just…y’know, suggestions. Games I like, personally. Probably not the same as games you like.”

“Well, why don’t we play them together?”

You almost dropped the clipboard. “What?”

“It’d be easier for us to play them if we had someone around who knows how they’re played, right?” Sun leaned forward, rays fluttering emphatically. “Plus, it’d give us the chance to become better friends, wouldn’t it?”

“Bet I could beat you at Hide-and-Seek.” Moon joked, his smile seeming to grow even wider in the dim light of the workshop. “Even in VR.”

“Um. Well.” Wow, you weren’t expecting this.

Was this really okay? Wouldn’t it be against company policy?

…

Eh, what the heck? What management didn’t know about wouldn’t hurt them!

“Sure! I mean, if that’s really okay. I’d be happy to…play with you guys…” You tried (and failed) to keep your tone casual, letting the words trail off. God, your face felt like it was on fire.

“It’s a date then!” Sun grabbed your hands, practically vibrating with how excited he was. “Oh, this is gonna be so much fun! We—we can even have a sleepover! We can play any game you want—you won’t be bored for a second, I promise!”

“Better get practicing.” Moon teased, pinching your burning cheek. “We’re not going to go easy on you.”

You laughed, nervous but feeling oddly light-hearted.

“Alright, then. You’re on.”
