Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight: Tiny Toon Adventures- “Toons Take Over”
Tumblr media
Tiny Toon Adventuress didn’t run for very long on Cartoon Network, but the show has left such an impact that it’s worth returning to every once in a while regardless.
This late entry is a good one, where “Steven” is taking time off, which gives 3/4 of the leads time to come to a specific conclusion- they’re sick of comedy and want to try something different; Babs wants a great romantic lead, ala Scarlett O’Hara, Buster dreams of being a Schwarzenegger-like action hero, while Plucky aspires to be a dramatic lead, ideally in tights. How do you meld these together?
We see the Tiny Toons spend much of the episode harassing the animation crew as the new directors to bring their vision to life, and the final result is... something. It’s a good time, that reflects Tiny Toons at its best, sly towards the craft and reverent to its roots in animation. I think it’s a lot of fun.

Sixty-six staffers at Warner Bros. Animation and 22 at Cartoon Network filed a petition for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday and simultaneously requested voluntary recognition from management at the Warner Bros. Discovery subsidiaries. Collectively, the group includes workers in roles like production manager, digital production assistant, IT technician, production coordinator, production assistant, design production coordinator, assistant production manager and senior assistant production manager. The effort was announced on a joint Zoom call around noon on Wednesday with production workers at the Warner Bros. Discovery brands and TAG members. The staffers involved work on an array of shows, including Warner Bros. Animation’s Batman: The Caped Crusader, Harley Quinn and Teen Titans Go! and Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, We Baby Bears and Craig of the Creek. “Although many might not think it, production is a specialized skill; we might not be artists or writers, but what we bring to the table goes beyond traditional creativity and gets content on the air,” Warner Bros. Animation production manager Hannah Ferenc said in a statement about the organization effort. “Having lived through the existing state of the animation industry for the past seven years, I want to make sure that not only our current workers, but all those who choose to join us in the future, can feel secure in following their passion by earning livable wages and being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

My Adventures With Superman is honestly a really impressively good example of how you can make an adaptation radically different and new while still doing justice to the source material by just approaching said source from a place of love and respect. The show is unabashedly and upfrontly meant to be a very explorative and experimental take on Superman that does the classic premise in new ways, revamped for another time and medium.
So many of the characters, designs, aesthetics, and world feel so extremely unfamiliar and unlike “traditional” Superman. But it still FEELS like Superman. The core, the spirit, the SOUL is absolutely and unmistakably there. The characters are all incredibly in-character and instantly recognizable. The plotting and writing feels straight off the page of the comic.
Even with major reinventions, this is so obviously and clearly Superman. Not some hoary “deconstruction” or obnoxiously self-aware “parody”, it’s just unabashedly honest-to-God played absolutely straight Superman. Even through all the changes, it’s that same classic, undistilled, nostalgic vibe of a Superman comic with Clark as a lovable, goofy guy with powers trying to be an example to the world, fighting crazy bad guys, helping old ladies across the street, and winking to the reader after Lois and Jimmy fail to see through his disguise yet again before cringing because Perry yelled at him for calling Perry “chief” again.
Hot, overeager tomboy Lois Lane is a bit different from usual but she’s so clearly still that same gorgeous would-be star reporter that every Superman falls in love with. Jimmy has been reimagines as kooky conspiracy buff, but he’s still ultimately Superman’s Pal who gets into wacky situations by virtue of being Superman’s Pal. Perry, Lombard, Ronnie, and Cat are all very different from the comics superficially — hell, Ronnie has had his gender flipped — but they are all still instantly recognizable as the same eccentric bunch of newsfolk they were there. Livewire and the Intergang members are all totally changed but at their center, they’re the same; same powers and gimmicks, etc.. Dr. Ivo is now a douchey techbro and yet he’s still fulfilling the very same role he does in the comics as a self-centered mad scientist who creates things that spiral beyond his control. Even Parasite, the most radically altered of all to the point of no longer being sentient, is still identifiable as his core concept of a monster that feeds on the lifeforce of others and becomes more powerful as he does, while also weakening when he can’t do so.
I really, really like it. It’s a wonderfully imaginative and well-put-together take on a very old series that really brings the concept into the modern age in a way that hasn’t really been done successfully outside the comics since the DCAU back in the 90s and early 2000s. People writing Superman or just superhero fiction in general should absolutely take notes from this show.

Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight: Animaniacs- "A Christmas Plotz" / "Little Drummer Warners"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was trying to decide what to write about for this holiday season. Maybe a special from a series on Checkered Past? Or an annual favorite like Yogi's First Christmas. But then I saw that Tom Ruegger and Andrea Romano, two of the greatest to work in the TV animation industry, were inducted into the Children and Family Emmy's inaugural Silver Circle, kind of a Hall of Fame.
Unfortunately, Pinky and the Brain the series was never a part of Cartoon Network's lineup, so I can't talk about its legendary holiday episode. But Animaniacs did have a couple of memorable Christmas segments, including these two that made up the 50th episode!
First we have an adaptation of A Christmas Carol that features Warner CEO Plotz as Ebenezer Scrooge, who fires Ralph the security guard and soon meets his three ghosts (played by guess who!), each of which showing Plotz the error of his ways. Soon, Ralph's surprisingly clever son becomes the eventual CEO of the studio and fires Plotz. Hey, he can't be worse than Zaslav.
"A Christmas Plotz" is pretty by the books, but effective in its work. As zany as Animaniacs gets, the show does have a slither of a heart, which is welcome for the season.
And we follow that with the Warners playing the Three Wise Men as they do a jazzy revue of traditional Christmas ballads, which is brilliantly scored and performed.
That's what you usually got with Animaniacs, quick wit and catchy music. Give this a spin during your holiday playlist!

It’s doesn’t take a 12th Level intelligence recognized this Legion video is a piece of crap. The writer/director don’t understand the Legion.
The Legions isn’t mentioned nor appears until 20 minutes into the 1 hour and 23 minutes movie.
Did we need another destruction of Krypton sequence?!?
Supergirl is a hothead, always starting fights. It actually makes her come across a little stupid and unlikable.
It’s unforgivable how Mon-El is depicted. One of the greatest Legionnaires and he’s made into (spoiled alert) a villain.
Save your money. If you’re curious, wait until it’s added to HBO’s lineup (probably in a couple of months).

Other Characters you can legally use for your Mickey Mouse project
Tumblr media
Mickey Mouse is in the public domain, as is Minnie Mouse and Peg-leg Pete. There's some caveats to that, and I talk about that more in this other post, but for now, let's talk about other characters who you can also use to fill out the cast.
These characters should all be in the public domain, though some characters still have treademarks. I'll get into how to use them safely as we go. Anyways, let's start.
Other Disney Characters
Tumblr media
Disney obvciously doesn't advertise this, but there's actually quite a few Disney originals who've actually been in the public domain for a while.
The Mad Doctor never had it's copyright renewed, and so it's very technically the first Mickey Mouse cartoon to enter the public domain. Keep in mind, the version of Pluto featured in the short isn't in the domain just yet, but the Doctor himself is free to use.
What's funny is that Disney would later use a version of Doctor for Epic Mickey. Obviously don't use that version of the character.
Aside from the Mad Doctor, we also have Oswald and Ortensia
Tumblr media
Yeah, as it turns out, Oswald's been in the public domain for quite a while, but he's still trademarked by Disney. Easy recommendation... use the original "fat" design of the character and have him go by Lucky.
But before Oswald, we have the Alice Comedies
Tumblr media
Everything about the Alice Comedies is Public Domain for a long time, and the Disney corporation very rarely acknowlege these characters existence. Which is a shame because These shorts were some of the first shorts Walt ever produced, and they have the unique gimmick of featuring a live action girl in an animated world.
Everybody already knows about Oswald, but nobody talks about Oswald and Mickey's older brother from these shorts, Julius the Cat
Tumblr media
Like... yeah no, it didn't all start with a mouse. Or a rabbit. It started with a cat.
Foxy and Milton Mouse
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both Foxy (top) and Milton (bottom, pictured with his girlfriend Rita Mouse) were characters created by Warner Brothers and Van Beuren respectively to cash in on Mickey's success, and both characters are also in the public domain.
In fact, all Van Beuren cartoons are apparently in the public domain, and I encourage you to find their cartoons and use them as you please.
Fleischer Characters
Tumblr media
Betty Boop is probably in the Public Domain, but there's a few caveats with this. From what I can tell, the name Betty Boop is trademarked, but the character herself isn't. Most of the old Betty Cartoons are free to use, but newer incarnations, including the versions used in 1985's The Romance of Betty Boop and 1989's The Betty Boop Movie Mystery are still very much under copyright.
To avoid any legal trouble, I have two big recommendations. Although everybody remembers Betty as having Black hair, in one of the few early instances of Betty being shown in color, she's actually depicted as Redhead.
Tumblr media
This is Betty Boop in 1934's Poor Cinderella, and her hair color is pretty clearly red.
The other option is to just make her black.
Though there's been some debate as to whether Betty Boop was intentionally modeled after Esther Lee Jones or not, there's still no denying the influence of Jazz on the character. Betty Boop is a Jazz singer and is often depicted dancing to Cab Calloway. Hell, the Betty Boop musical features Jasmine Amy Rogers as the titular character.
Tumblr media
Betty Boop aside, there's an entire world of defunct Betty Boop characters who are definately public domain, including Bimbo and Koko the Clown.
Tumblr media
Next year, Popeye's also gonna enter the Domain. So keep an eye out for him too.
Anyways, these are my picks, but obviously this list isn't meant to be comprehensive. There's a ton of old cartoon characters out there who can be freely reinterpreted into newer works. Feel free to add your own favorite public domain cartoon to the list.
