ok but I have Thoughts about the way Minecraft usernames translate to actual names, both irl and in fanfic. They’re definitely ‘obsessed with structure and grumpy at inconsistency flavor autism’ thoughts but still. I find it weird how we cut and paste the media we’re given to fit what we view as functional worldbuilding, and how that gets screwy when translating online names.
like, you’re working with several categories here. The person’s actual real name, their irl nickname, their gamer tag, a name possibly contained by or possibly the entirety of that gamer tag, and any extra pieces or symbols in the gamer tag. And you have the weird situation where those categories might not easily translate to a ‘First Name Last Name’ structure. For an example, we’ve got Phil Watson, who’s gamer tag is ‘Ph1LzA,’ and is called Philza Minecraft or Philza. The ‘Minecraft last name’ is a…. Bit? A joke? A reference to a bit of lore? It’s unclear. The ‘Za’ bit was put there for flair and is now an integral part of his name. Sometimes it’s his last name. Sometimes his real last name is chucked in there. the 1 in his actual username is literally never referenced in nicknames or fic it’s like it’s not even there. But that’s a simple one. What about Tubbo_? because we call him Tubbo Underscore. Like. We say the ‘_’ aloud. Why do we do that. What has possessed us to make that decision? What about FitMC? I’ve usually heard it said ‘Fit Emsee.’ Why say that, and not say ‘Minecraft? That’s not even really a last name, it’s just like…. His full first name. Fit is used more like a shortened nickname. BadBoyHalo. Like. ‘Bad boy’ is a slang term, not a name. It would make the most sense to call him Halo, that’s the distinct noun in the name, the term the ‘bad boy’ bit is referring to. Like ‘GoodTimesWithScar’ but noooo. Bad. Halo is usually a last name, if it’s there at all. Skeppy on the other hand is… just his name. No last name ever. Technoblade is also weird. Technoblade is his full name. We call him that. We ALSO call him ‘Techno,’ and use Blade as a last name. We also use Blade as a title. What the heck. GeminiTay. We call her Gem. We use Tay as a last name sometimes. Her name is a Zodiac constellation. Literally nowhere I’m have I seen that affect her naming conventions. IJevin. We just… remove the I. For everything. This wouldn’t bother me except we don’t do it with everyone and I’m starting to get annoyed by the inconsistency. GoodTimesWithScar. Ok. This one also bugs me. Like, most fics call him Scar Goodtimes when they need a name. I’m not gonna dig into it but that’s…. Why? Why that? Grian never gets a last name. Ranboo sometimes gets chopped into Ran and Boo but usually he’s an Underscore or he’s last nameless. Wilbur Soot functions wonderfully (until the get involved shhhh) but it’s too close to his real name it gets very confusing.
anyway, all of this sucks, I hate it all, we’re a terrible fandom /hj
all that nonsense aside, yknow who has a functional Firstname Lastname username? It’s even got a space, and proper capitals: Mumbo Jumbo. That’s who. Look at that. It’s perfect. Everyone should be more like Mumbo Jumbo. Thank you and good night.
.
Edit: I know about Ranboo Beloved and Grian Dreamslayer and the various other characters whose names I didn’t mention perfectly in this post. This was no piece of journalism, this was an old man shouts at cloud meme personified. I was very overstimulated and this was what happened to catch my autistic ire. I’m not upset, just figured I’d clarify, a lot of people seem distressed at my not mentioning Beloved. Hope y’all are having a lovely day 💜

Hey, do you remember this irritating little turd?
Tumblr media
Yeah, that one. From Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. Remember how it was frequently annoying how he was constantly antagonistic towards his friends, made his own best friend be constantly annoyed by him, and was just sometimes the worst character in the show? Turns out that there's a reason for that.
Apparently, Craig McCracken WANTED Bloo to experience this neat little writing trick called "Character Development." But Cartoon Network, wanting more of an episodic sitcom, gave a big fat no to that idea. Because they wanted this series to have no continuity, they had to make sure that the characters couldn't develop. And that is...nonsense for a number of reasons.
#1
These shows came out the same time as Foster's:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The continuity wasn't MAJOR with these shows, you can still watch any episode at random from either of them and still have a good time. BUT they still had this sense of subtle progression where characters, villains, and little touches in the story. Granted, they're both more along the lines of action adventure stories instead of sitcoms, but KND is a lot more or less the same as Foster's in terms of characters going on goofy adventures and being a comedy for kids. It just so happened that the comedy could be taken a little seriously at times. Besides...
#2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sitcoms CAN have character development and continuity. You can watch any episode of either of these shows too, BUT there's a noticeable sense of character progression and continuity from all of them. Sometimes it's something simple as a character dating someone else at a certain point or a change in location or even when a character is working a certain job or not. Character development and continuity can still exist and work in making an episode enjoyable without previous context, but seeing these characters grow, even in subtle ways, is great. Mainly because...
#3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Character development is NOT a bad thing. Far from it, in fact. If anything, it makes watching a show more interesting as you can look back at how a character USED to act with a fond nostalgia of "Man, remember when they used to act like THAT?" And then look at how they CURRENTLY act with the sense of, "Wow, this character's really grown up in the last few seasons." And while it feels SLOW in some cases, it gives the sense that the character can learn, grow, and BE BETTER despite how they might have started off. Even Foster's understood this, because...
#4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Show HAS character development AND continuity. Like how Cheese just didn't exist in the show until a certain point and became a main stay for the entire series. Or how Goo was introduced as another main stay character. Not only that, but after her introduction as this overly imaginative little girl, she learned her lesson to cool down her over imagination so she wouldn't cause the exact same problems in the future but still faced a NEW problem with her imagination that she and the others could learn from. Like it or not, that IS character development AND continuity. It's just that other characters can experience it instead of Bloo. But fine. They wanted to make Bloo a stagnant character who never changes? Sure. I can accept that...Except for one last thing.
#5
Tumblr media
DID THEY HAVE TO MAKE HIM SO IRREDEEMABLE?! In fairness, the bus episode IS entertaining, but that still shows how Bloo, as a character, went through regression instead of development. He's not the same as he started in the first season. Heck, he's not the same as he was in the FIRST THREE EPISODES. There, he was written as brash and a bit immature, but still apologetic and polite in certain spaces. He was even about to object to Wilt giving him the bed, but Wilt was too polite to let Bloo refuse his offer. If this was the Bloo in future seasons, he would have guilt tripped Wilt into giving him the bed and would have been the first to suggest Wilt would sleep on the floor.
If the show wasn't allowed to make Bloo develop, I can understand that. Networks and studios can kiss all the asses. But when it got to the point where I couldn't understand why Mac was friends with Bloo anymore, it leaves me wondering why they had to highlight his worst qualities instead of his best ones? To quote MY favorite character in this show, "I'm sorry, but that is NOT okay." The writers have my sympathy, it's not easy trying to appease your network overlords while still making the show good. But if Bloo's an example of anything, it's that studios should trust showrunners more and that character development is NEVER a sin.

god, it’s tiring scrolling through the harringrove tag on ao3 and seeing most new fics preface in their tags or in the summary that they don’t support billy’s action/or that they dislike canon billy and it’s just
you don’t have to explain. we know okay.
and it gets uncomfortable when every fic is like ‘billy was a racist in the show so i didn’t like him’ or ‘i think canon billy was irredeemable so this is fanon billy’ and like, who are you talking to? we all like billy here. the people you’re talking to will never actually care about your views. you don’t have to explain yourselves to the weird moral police.

As a "film buff," one thing I will never get over is how long color and black and white film coexisted. Color films started popping up in the 20s, and gained real popularity in the 50s, but black and white films were still commonplace through the 60s.
For example, the black and white Vincent Price classic The Last Man on Earth, and the technicolor splatter flick 2000 Maniacs both came out in 1964.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Incidentally, 11 years after Vincent Price starred in the full-color—and 3D—House of Wax (1953).
Tumblr media
which just happened to come out 4 years before Ed Wood's Plan 9 From Outer Space (1957).
Tumblr media
The same year as The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
Tumblr media
and 11 years before genre-defining zombie film Night of the Living Dead was released in black and white.
Tumblr media
So why were black and white films able to hold on, and compete against color movies, for almost half a century, but then quickly disappeared in the 70s?
Television.
In the 1950s, just when color film was becoming popular, so too was television. Black and white television. For the average person, a color movie was something you could only see in a theatre, but because of television, people were still used to watching things in black and white. Color may have been a bonus, but it was something additional, not the standard. However, once color television started becoming the norm in the early 70s, people were watching color movies at home, when they went to the theatre a color movie was now the standard, and black and white was lacking a basic feature. People just weren't used to it anymore, and the only time they saw black and white movies was as cheap filler programming on TV, which only strengthened the idea that black and white meant substandard.
Now I'm not going to be the pretentious asshole and say that black and white movies somehow magically have more artistic value and we should go back to that. It was cheaper, that was it. People used it as long as they could because film was expensive and color film was very expensive. Now it's cheaper to film on 4k digital in full color, so that's the reasonable thing to do. I just suggest that everyone drop the early-70s mindset that black and white films are intrinsically inferior and not worth your time.

This is my very tired rambling time and you all have to listen to me because idk why.
Can we all just say a big thank you to Alice Oseman for everything they've done? The characters she's created are just so beautiful. I relate to so many of them, and they all feel so realistic and relatable. It's almost therapeutic to see a character that I relate to so heavily and they get happy endings. The characters all have bad things happen, but they end up happy. It gives me hope, it brings me comfort, and I just feel.. seen? Like obviously none of the characters are exactly like me in any way but, like.. getting a little more specific to how I relate to their characters and who- Charlie, Aled, and Frances all make me wanna cry all the time. Any time I think about them. In the best way. Because for each of them, I just think "Finally! Obviously I'm not the only one who thinks and feels things like this. They are like this too!"
And also just thank you Alice Oseman for getting into dark topics with your stories? Cause I'm not gonna share what but just with some of the stuff I've seen, it's helped me realize that I have some shit that I do need to reach out and get help for that I probably would've continued ignoring and pushed away, but seeing people go through it and get help eventually made me feel confident and comfortable enough to consider asking for help. Which is actually, like, huge. And I'm not the only one who has felt this way, I know that.
All of her creations mean so much to so many people and I just love her for how authentic their characters and stories are.

allie is a nickname i feel like im losing attachment too because I used it during a period of life that ive moved on from. But, my nickname I go by irl is way to close to my actual name for comfort and just for internet safety and personal privacy and comfort i don’t really want to use it. And also my actual name has like no other nickname variations that i like🫠🫠🫠 i just don’t know what to do. i like allie its cute but its slowly feeling less and less like me everyday. also going by a different name would mean changing my user and all my tags so i’ll probably stick to allie and just try to love it. *sigh*

Okay so this is a bit of a weird vent but I needed to word this in another way cause I’m pretty pissed about the direction trans rights are going. I honestly still have hope that we can teach people still but I’m just, tired of it all. I won’t say that my mental health is bad enough from this shit to the point that I’ll do something but this is more about the kids being affected than me. Yknow for caring so much about the kids they really don’t care all that much. Anyway, here’s an explanation using peaches.
Government: I don’t like peaches. I’m going to destroy all the peaches and throw them out.
Society: hey! There’s tons of people who like peaches! You can’t just ban them all.
Government: oh okay obviously. I meant I’m going to ban peaches with pita that aren’t removed.
1 half of society: hey wait, but wouldn’t that just get rid of all the peaches? Besides it’s kinda fun to cut a peach the way I usually do.
Other half of society: oh yeah I hate the pits in peaches. Get rid of them, god I hate those pits so much! They get in the way of everything!
Government: awesome! We are going to get rid of all the peaches with pits in them.
Later
Government: we’ve signed many bills and now there’s laws against owning peaches or growing peaches.
Other half of society: but we didn’t want you to get rid of all the peaches! Just the pits in them! We only hated the pits!
1st half: why?
2nd half: what?
1st half: why do you care so much about the pits?is it because the ones on top told you to? Or your parents? Friends? Honestly the pits in a peach doesn’t bother us that much, it’s not really something people should freak out over. Maybe you wanted to get rid of the pits so that they wouldn’t get rid of peaches. But you can’t have the peach without the pit. Peaches wouldn’t exist without the pit of the peach.
2nd: of course it could! Why would peaches need pits?
1st: peaches didn’t just show up on the shelves out of the blue, they came from the seeds. And that’s what the pit holds. The pit is what started the ability to have peaches. They’ve tried to ban peaches before yknow. But people saw that they were just another fruit. I guess that changed again. You don’t have to understand why the pit is there. You just need to understand it belongs with the rest of the peach. You can’t just take a part out of a whole and expect it to be okay.

It's weird. I have never been in a relationship in the whole 22 years of my life.
The whole idea of being in a relationship/getting married and having a life partner. Someone around that you love, having domestic bliss, a person next to you at night to cuddle, the soft touches, the arguments, the yelling, not seeing eye to eye, making up, learning, adapting to each other, sharing a life.
But while the idea is amazing, very lovely, the thought of ACTUALLY getting into a relationship. Gives me the hives. I want a relationship but having one, makes me recoil.
Sometimes I think I just romanticize the idea to much. I am unsure.

Not to be serious on main but I’m sleepy and thinking
Honestly i think the most radicalizing thing I’ve ever encountered was the realization that just having a certain amount of money and social power makes you exempt from consequences. Like Henry Kissinger was a war criminal but he got playboy articles written about him and gets praised by nearly every politician he’s worked with. Elon Musk spent 20 years losing money on silly, stupid fucking projects solely meant to get him in good with reddit chuds, making cars that explode and sending the ones that work into fucking solar orbit. Somehow until 3 months ago he was the second wealthiest man in the world, and honestly, i wouldn’t be surprised if his cockroach ass still keeps a fortune once the lawsuits are done. A million other random guys popped into your head as you kept reading.
Listen. Listen. I do not think retributive justice is like, good. But it just irkes me that its the guys like this that set the rules of the game we all have to play, but they’re somehow magically exempt. I genuinely do not understand how you can look at this situation and not want to tear all the systems responsible for it down.

So i fucked an obese man
And weirdly it wasnt his obesity that made me not fuck him again. It was his political views. So rest assured fat fucks, u could win an ex fashion model if u play ur cards right and have good political views. So yah hes obese as fuck and also has a micro cock that was soooo fucking small it was pretty much an inny. And im like i would never tear someone down for having a micro cock or for being fat but u know what if ur gon be a white supremacist white nationalist right wing trumptard then u know what? Ur a fat obese fuck with a cock so small that its pretty much an inny.

I wish I could feel comfortable when I wear my school uniform. everybody says, "You look fine" or "you're not fat"
you say that, but you don't know how I feel about my body. I pull my t shirt away and suck my stomach in when I'm walking around town or school because I either feel bloated or I get stared at by people, so that makes me feel self-conscious.
I hate feeling uncomfortable and self concious about my body, you know? I just want to feel comfortable.

so how do druids work on ad&d, I know they are a sub class of cleric, but’s that it
Well, like anything in 1st edition, the answer is a simple yes, and also no.
Tumblr media
While they are listed as a subclass of cleric, druids are essentially their own class with their own progression table, spells per day, spell lists, and unique abilities—such as a rudimentary wild shape. As well as a level cap of 14.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, they are treated as clerics for the purpose of their attacks and saves because in ye olden days everything was covered with big-ass matrices!
Tumblr media
So for the purpose of these tables, it makes sense to minimize the number of actual classes. So technically, there are only four classes, requiring only four entries on the attack and save matrices. But then subclasses expand that to 9 without having to expand the matrices for each new class.
And while this may seem stupid in retrospect—which I mean, fair—it's important to remember that original and basic D&D only had those four classes, with others being added as subclasses in supplements. So the entire game up to this point had been built around that four-class concept.
Although in true D&D fashion, they immediately then go against that, because the monk, originally introduced as a cleric subclass, is now a fifth top-level class and just stated to use the cleric attack matrix and thief save matrix.
However, they did evenutally figure it out, and in 2nd edition just did what 1st edition was basically already doing and put all the classes in four groups instead of grouping them under the four originals.
Tumblr media
Then third edition realized that all thsoe matrices were stupid and just used attack and save bonuses—a thing that somehow took 25 years and a change of ownership to figure out—while also kinda losing the groups and actually having listings for all individual classes. Then simplified it even further in 3.5 by just spelling it out as good and poor saves, and good, average, and poor attack progressions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And as long as I'm doing a long-winded thing on early D&D, it's also important to point out that bards were also a class in 1st edition, and were basically a subclass of druid that required taking 5 levels of fighter and 5 levels of thief, as well as having minimum stats of STR 15, Dex 15, Con 10, Int 11, WIS 15, CHA 15. I just like pointing out how absurdly difficult it was to be a bard in 1st edition.

So I was reading comments from an old CACW thread (don't ask me why) and I found the constant references to Steve as a soldier or military officer compared to Tony as "a civilian" were bugging me.
First of all, Steve was never a true military officer. He escaped Basic before it killed him, went against orders and got lucky and then led* a chaotic mixed group in special missions with mixed military and civilian oversight dedicated just to handling him. He was in a war zone, but he wasn't ever held to the standards of a soldier, or the responsibilities of an officer.
Now Tony. He obviously also isn't a soldier, but he isn't any less experienced in combat or war zones by the time he and Cap meet. The whole issue in IM2 with the congressional hearing was because he was continually running missions to retrieve or destroy his weapons, from the hands of active combatants many in actual war zones. I actually saw a claim that as of CW, Tony had only been in 5 life threatening situations (which went from bizarrely funny to insanely hilarious when they added "6 if you count the kidnapping.") No, just no. He ran multiple missions on his own, and is implied to have worked with War Machine after IM2, as in IM3, Rhodes specifically says the military doesn't want his help with the Mandarin issue for ego reasons from the New York invasion.
In fact, if you check the timelines, when they met in The Avengers, Tony had been running active combat missions as Iron Man longer than Steve had as Captain America. Neither having passed Basic Training or worked as part of a standard military unit.
*pretty sure at least two Howlies outranked Steve even if he was actually a Captain, but then they put a Sergeant in charge after Steve was gone, so rank is for suckers, apparently. Maybe they established leadership by arm wrestling?
Tl:dr, Steve and Tony both have experience running combat missions in war zones and neither experienced normal military service, stop calling Steve a soldier and Tony a civilian.

Omfg just listening to a Korn interview with a clip of them playing Lies, and I just realized that Jonathan is trying to do a guttural scream, like an actual "metal technique" in a Korn song for once
They got a lot more technical later on but it's still strange to hear a clear, distinguishable sound in early Korn songs were every thing is kinda muddled & grimey sounding
Really small thing I never noticed that makes me feel kind stupid for some reason, like I don't appreciate Jon's vocals enough

TGAA spoilers -
-
Okay, so. I already knew that Kazuma was going to die. People aren't very good at tagging spoilers. But it's still pretty disappointing to see it happen so early. He had an interesting personality and his relationship with Naruhodo was endearing.
Not only that, but I'm biased against this game from the start - I truly can't stand Sherlock Holmes or his adaptations anymore. It's stupid and probably hard to believe, but I actually have a traumatic memory (NOT TJLC) linked to the Sherlock Holmes novels. And of course it's stupid - since seeing quotes from the Adventure of the Speckled Band brought up, in part, fun memories from when I read the short stories way back when. AnYwAy I know that Sholmes is a beloved character from TGAA, but I'm unfortunately not too happy to encounter an anime version of Sherlock Holmes.
I'll have to force myself to ignore this disappointment and that... Slight issue... Because I actually enjoyed Chapter 1 thoroughly, and Susato seems fun. I'm sure the game is balanced enough and Kazuma's early death isn't an issue on the long term. It's just that as I've mentioned in other contexts, I've grown slightly bored of stories with major characters deaths... Which I know makes little sense coming from someone with a fangan, but in my defence, I came up with it in 2017. As long as the game remains fun and the cases good, it should be alright. I know I'm biased negatively and genuinely wish to enjoy it. I've heard many good things about these two games.
