And here's proof that, when together, Lewis and Tang Xuan don't share a single brain cell between them.

My hypothesis is they share, like, a third (1/3) of one brain cell and then, when they join with Li Ling (who also has a third of one), it combines into one (1) singular brain cell that hops between our boys.

I’m playing Master Detective Archives: Rain Code. And with as little spoilers as possible, here’s what I’ve learned so far:

1 The Danganronpa vibes are STRONG

2. Don’t get attached to anyone because they will die.

3. Shinigami is basically the monokuma/Junko of this game, but without the whole despair and “I’m going to lock a bunch of teenagers in a building and make them fight to the death” thing.

assuming octolings can grow their hair out, how would they cut it if it ever grows too long? like do they never cut or trim it at all? or are they expected to just cut it off to form a new octarian at that point?

Unlike with humans where our hair just grows infinitely, I think inkfish tentacles really only grow until a certain point proportionate to the rest of their body. So their tentacles wouldn't grow eternally unless they had some insane genetics - because the natural length your tentacles definitely varies on something like that.

This ask seems to go under the assumption that new Octarians are created solely when an Octoling's tentacle gets detached from the body. I'd really like some canon clarification for how exactly the creation of new Octarians works, but I don't like that explanation. Because we know Octarians come in a really weirdly large variety of shapes and intellect, if JUST getting a tentacle cut off always created a new Octarian, that would mean if you ever chopped a tentacle off by accident or just... liked having short tentacles, you'd also have 200 children out there. Which is also extremely immoral especially if you combine it with the "octarians grow up into octolings" -headcanon (which is incorrect), because how many people are going to cut off their tentacles and be like "oh yeah, i guess i'm raising quadruplets now". Yeah. No 14-16 year old is, and no one else is either.

My assumption is that tentacles don't just magically become new Octarians, but Octarians as we know them are a product of Octarian biotechnology. I would guess it was initially created to mass produce foot soldiers (or... arm soldiers?) for war, as tentacles are expendable and Octarians are said to be very diligent and extremely simple, at least the single-tentacled ones. Many of them have since been created for other tasks that you don't really need Octolings to do, like factory jobs. The social status of Octarians is kind of weird, because besides all of this, they're also shown to be normal citizens and there's even art book concept art of like, an Octarian mafia, and several other things in the series that confirm that they're also just people sometimes. But then half the time they're just mass produced soldiers that ink the same cubic meter of ground for like 12 hours straight waiting for Agent 3 to trespass. (i think this is canonically what they do too).

So a recently cut tentacle is used to grow the tentacle into a clone of sorts, which is easy and not that resource-intensive, because a tentacle cutting already has a lot of the stuff you need, including brain cells. So the shape of an Octarian really depends on how long it's been "cooked" and their shape can be highly modified to fit a specific battle role for example. But at its core, an Octarian is really a tentacle that's been tricked to try to regrow into what it originally was or at least what it was a part of (that being an Octoling), which is why some Octarians look a lot more like Octolings in terms of their anatomy, whereas others only had time to grow legs and the bare minimum of stuff like eyes and a mouth. They're mostly half-baked clones.

But back to the actual topic of the ask, I don't think a tentacle cutting automatically means you're giving birth to an Octarian. Most tentacle cuttings are likely either trashed or fried (rather fried, that's meat after all). With that being said though, most Octolings probably don't want to, or don't feel like they need to cut their tentacles. Every Octoling tentacle is much more prehensile and generally useful than the tentacles of Squids are, with squids having two longer tentacles primarily for striking and four smaller ones that are rarely that useful at all. Octolings however have naturally longer tentacles, and they can pretty much be used like arms, so many don't like to cut them off for no reason - and it obviously hurts, too. Fashion-based tentacle cuts really only recently became a thing among squids and it's even newer for Octolings.

Steve ran a hand through his hair and let out a frustrated sigh. He and Eddie were absolutely the worst pair for this job but everyone else was needed in their roles. He didn't even have Robin with him because her language skills were needed for a different facet of the plan.

"What's got you stressed, Harrington?"

They had been given the task of sneaking into the compound and disabling the security system long enough for the others to get Victor Creel out of his cell.

"Hehe, thought you'd never ask." Eddie got to work, pressing every single button and flipping every single switch. "One of these has got to work!", he started shouting as an alarm rang out.

"This is stupid! This was so dumb! Why'd they put us on this!?", Steve practically wailed.

Eddie patted him on the shoulder and nodded his head towards one of the camera feeds that showed Victor's cell opening. "Mission accomplished."

Extremely Long Post About My Cats Under The Cut

So I have 7 Cats (alot i know). All but 2 were strays I took in as kittens and the other 2 were left with us when their owners couldnt care for them anymore so who know what fuckin breeds they are but Hannibal has to have somethin big in him the fat ass.

Their names, not in any particular order are Itty Bitty (also known as ittius bittius and my baby bear, Diamond (also known as mondo and various combinations of sitnky, rat, and man), Big Boy (also known as nuts and big balls, i'll explain why later), Sneezy, Hannibal (aka ass fat and hangry), Nola, and Rexy (aka honky, honky wonky, and mama)

Itty Bitty: She's one of the ones I got as a kitten, if I had to guess she was probably about 6 months old. I found her on my porch when I was 16 and honestly we've been inseparable ever since. She is the single most anxious cat I have ever seen and also the only cat in my house to have caught a rat. Yes, I know and it's funny as fuck. She barely ever leaves my room and runs back in at a moment's notice. She sleeps next to my pillow (and in my window). She stalks Nola, no idea why. Also she runs like a rabbit. I would die for her.

Diamond: One of my newest additions and the only one I got as an adult. We found him eating garbage out of a trash can at a gas station and just like threw him in the car and brought him home. I love him but oh my god. He is needy, up my ass 24/7 and learned how to open doors (and cabinets and drawers) just to be even more up my ass. Sneezy: Another recent addition, he's about 2 years old now? Hands down he's the best snuggler in the house, you can spoon him and hold him close and he loves it 9/10 he's snotty. I've taken him to the vet and they said because he was sick at a young age he is perma-snotty. That's just like one of the things with taking in strays. We hadn't settled on a name when we got him fixed so we told them Dakota but I don't think anyone has ever actually called him that he's just Sneezy. Yes, I have 2 black cats. Yes I can tell them apart, very easily actually lol.

Hannibal: There's alot of him. We named him Hannibal because he's the reason we had to stop leaving food on the counter. He eats everything in sight. He's a very friendly cat! But he doesn't know when to stop playing, he tries to play with Diamond despite Diamond crying every time he so much as looks at him wrong. He also has like no brain cells I swear. He opened a door once and hasn't done it again since, he just cries. He also yells for attention alot. He is also harness trained! I had to buy a bigger harness just for his fat ass! I found him outside as a kitten, he bit my thumb so hard it was bruised for like a month but he's now the sweetest baby so it's fine. We got him right after Sneezy though Sneezy is honestly an old soul who just wants to sleep (and sneeze).

Nola: The second one left with us! Her original owner also lives with us now too, though she prefers my little brother. She's about the same age as Hannibal but she is like 1/3rd his size, probably because she was bottle fed. She is Very Sassy and Has Boundaries and you Will Respect Them. Which is fine lol. She likes to be up high.

Last but not least: Rexy! She is in the very middle of our group. We actually had another cat we were certain was her sister but she escaped and we sadly never found her again. We've been extra careful since then and haven't lost another. Rexy is about 4 years old now? We found her as a kitten and we believe she was hit by a car, she has a gimp leg and actually has arthritis but still gets around fine! At one point, before we managed to get her fixed she somehow got pregnant and had 1 kitten, he developed neurological issues around 6 months (at which he was the size of a 3 month old) and had to be put down sadly, but that's the source of the nickname Mama. Honestly, she's kind of broken and silly and I love her, I've been taking care to make sure she can reach things without issue and isn't hurting her leg too much. She is bitey and nibbles you while you're petting her, it's fine just don't let her at your nose it hurts. Her other nickname is honky/honky wonky because her meow sounds like a honk.

All of them are weird and silly and have their quirks, I sincerely love all of them and care for them as best I can even when they frustrate me. They're all indoor cats with Diamond, Hannibal, and Nola being harness trained though Nola doesn't enjoy being outside unless in a clear bag I bought just for them.

The mammalian brain consists of millions to billions of cells that are organized into many cell types with specific spatial distribution patterns and structural and functional properties1,2,3. Here we report a comprehensive and high-resolution transcriptomic and spatial cell-type atlas for the whole adult mouse brain. The cell-type atlas was created by combining a single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) dataset of around 7 million cells profiled (approximately 4.0 million cells passing quality control), and a spatial transcriptomic dataset of approximately 4.3 million cells using multiplexed error-robust fluorescence in situ hybridization (MERFISH). The atlas is hierarchically organized into 4 nested levels of classification: 34 classes, 338 subclasses, 1,201 supertypes and 5,322 clusters. We present an online platform, Allen Brain Cell Atlas, to visualize the mouse whole-brain cell-type atlas along with the single-cell RNA-sequencing and MERFISH datasets. We systematically analysed the neuronal and non-neuronal cell types across the brain and identified a high degree of correspondence between transcriptomic identity and spatial specificity for each cell type. The results reveal unique features of cell-type organization in different brain regions—in particular, a dichotomy between the dorsal and ventral parts of the brain. The dorsal part contains relatively fewer yet highly divergent neuronal types, whereas the ventral part contains more numerous neuronal types that are more closely related to each other. Our study also uncovered extraordinary diversity and heterogeneity in neurotransmitter and neuropeptide expression and co-expression patterns in different cell types. Finally, we found that transcription factors are major determinants of cell-type classification and identified a combinatorial transcription factor code that defines cell types across all parts of the brain. The whole mouse brain transcriptomic and spatial cell-type atlas establishes a benchmark reference atlas and a foundational resource for integrative investigations of cellular and circuit function, development and evolution of the mammalian brain.

Kailan, why do you love me? Is it because of how I react every time you annoy me or try to make me angry? How frustrated I am when you start joking around. You will probably be laughing at me and suddenly call me cute. It shut me off completely because I didn't see that would come from you.

Kailan, why do you love me? Is it because of my clumsy and sleepy texts? I often send you weird combinations of words but you still can read them, perfectly. Sometimes I become too clingy and won't give up on my bedtime just to talk to you more.

Abstract

The hard problem. And that is the problem of consciousness – how a kilogram or so of nerve cells conjures up the seamless kaleidoscope of sensations, thoughts, memories and emotions that occupy every waking moment. 

Consciousness is apparent in living organisms when they have electricity passing between cells. Our stipulation is that it is this electric transfer that creates the whole knowing and sense of self and therefore consciousness.

Every cell in a human has electricity flowing between cell walls and thus the harnessing of this power, or force, allows the knowledge and sense of being. This allows for any organism that harness enough electricity to know what, where and why an organism is.

Only when an organism handles and controls the surging power can it know what's is relative to it.

Harnessing power creates the necessary conditions for the feeling of self as it allows the organism control raw power.

This theory is experimentally verifiable with present and future technologies.

Measuring Relevant Complexity

In this article, we critically examine three proposed measures of the relevant complexity of conscious neural systems: neural complexity, C N; information integration, Φ; and a new measure, causal density, cd (16–19). To our knowledge, these are the only extant measures that explicitly attempt to quantify the balance between integration and differentiation exhibited by a neural system. Although these and related measures might also be applicable to nonneural systems, we are concerned in the main with neural systems only. In our analysis of these measures, we investigate how well the constraints of process-orientation, causality, and computability are satisfied. We exclude from detailed consideration properties of neuronal dynamics, such as synchrony (20), for which explicit measures that can be associated with relevant complexity have not been proposed. Moreover, we do not consider several theoretical perspectives that share many common features with the dynamic core hypothesis (1) but which are not explicitly concerned with quantitative measures of complex dynamics. They include the notions of “coalitions” of neurons (21), global negatively entropic brain states (22), the “global workspace” (23), and association of perceptual events with the coalescence of a “macroscopic pool” of mesoscopic “wave packets” of neural activity (24).

Neural Complexity.

Neural complexity expresses the extent to which a system is both dynamically segregated, so that small subsets of the system tend to behave independently, and dynamically integrated, so that large subsets of the system tend to behave coherently (3, 7, 16). A practical algorithm for the computation of neural complexity is provided in ref. 16; see also Neural Complexity in Supporting Text, which is published as supporting information on the PNAS web site. In brief, the neural complexity, C N, of a system X composed of n elements is equal to the sum of the average mutual information across all bipartitions of the system (16). The mutual information between two subsets A and B, defined by a single bipartition, measures the uncertainty about A that is accounted for by the state of B. It is calculated as MI(A;B) = H(A) + H(B) − H(AB), where H is the informational entropy, i.e., the overall degree of statistical independence. Under Gaussian assumptions, the entropy of the system, H(X), or the entropy of any subset of the system, can be calculated analytically from the covariance matrix COV(X) relating the responses of the elements of the system.

The covariance matrix COV(X) can in turn be calculated analytically from the system’s connectivity matrix C ij(X), assuming linear system dynamics and activation of network elements by uncorrelated noise (16). Alternatively, COV(X) can be derived empirically on the basis of the recorded activity of a network over a specific time period. In this case, C N reflects the explicit exchange of signals that takes place either within the isolated system or in a behaving system during interaction with an external environment as an embedded and embodied neural network (25). The concept of neural complexity has been extended to characterize the selectional responses of neural systems to inputs in terms of “matching” complexity, which is calculated as the total neural complexity of a neural system X when the input is present, minus the intrinsic complexity of X and minus the complexity that is directly attributable to the input (26).

Precise calculation of C N requires the evaluation of mutual information across all possible bipartitions, which can become computationally prohibitive for large systems. There is, however, a tractable approximation to C N, which, instead of considering all possible bipartitions of a system, considers only those that divide the system into sets comprising one single element and all of the remaining elements (see ref. 27 and Neural Complexity in Supporting Text). A disadvantage of C N and its approximation is that they do not reflect causal interactions because C N is based on mutual information, which is a symmetric quantity.

Information Integration, Φ.

This measure has been proposed as a way to quantify the total amount of information that a conscious system can integrate (18). The theory in which Φ is proposed as the central element, the information integration theory of consciousness (18), makes the claim that consciousness corresponds to the capacity of a system to integrate information and that Φ measures this capacity: “experience, that is, information integration, is a fundamental quantity, just as mass, charge, or energy are. It follows that any physical system has subjective experience to the extent that it is capable of integrating information” (18). Φ is defined in (18) as the “effective information” across the informational “weakest link” of a system, the so-called “minimum information bipartition” (see refs. 17 and 18 and Information Integration in Supporting Text). Effective information is calculated as the mutual information across a partition in the case where outputs from one subset have maximum entropy, and the minimum information bipartition is that partition of the system for which the effective information is lowest.

Inasmuch as Φ was explicitly formulated to measure consciousness as a capacity as opposed to a process, two features are critical: (i) determining Φ depends on replacing the outputs of all possible subsets of a system with uncorrelated noise, so that each set of outputs has maximum entropy (i.e., reflecting all possible activity patterns), and (ii) the effective information across the majority of partitions is significant only insofar as it helps determine which partition is the minimum information bipartition; the value of Φ depends only on the effective information across the minimum information bipartition. The focus on capacity leads to the counterintuitive prediction (18) that a brain with a high value of Φ but displaying no activity at all would be conscious.

Unlike C N, Φ reflects causal interactions because Φ is based on effective information, which is a directional version of mutual information that relies on the replacement of the outputs of different subsets of the studied system with maximum entropy signals. However, Φ cannot be measured for any nontrivial real-world system, for two reasons. First, it is infeasible to replace the outputs of arbitrary subsets of complex real neural systems with uncorrelated noise. Second, the evaluation of Φ requires the calculation of effective information across each bipartition of a system, and there is a factorial growth in the number of partitions that must be examined as the size of the network increases, i.e., as with C N, the number of partitions grows approximately as n n for networks of size n. Although the possibility of confronting this issue has been discussed (17), absent an effective approximation, the evaluation of Φ is computationally infeasible for large networks.

In contrast to neural complexity C N and causal density cd (19), Φ has been proposed as an adequate measure of the “quantity of consciousness” generated by a system, such that systems with sufficiently high values of Φ would necessarily be conscious (18). It is therefore critical for the information integration theory of consciousness that high values of Φ should not be obtained from arbitrary nonconscious systems. However, we here show analytically that, even for a trivially simple network, Φ may grow without bound as a function of network size.

They postulate that consciousness is intrinsically connected to quantum spin since the latter is the origin of quantum effects in both Bohm and Hestenes quantum formalism and a fundamental quantum process associated with the structure of space-time. That is, spin is the “mind-pixel”. The unity of mind is achieved by entanglement of the mind-pixels. Applying these ideas to the particular structures and dynamics of the brain, we theorize that human brain works as follows: through action potential modulated nuclear spin interactions and paramagnetic O2/NO driven activations, the nuclear spins inside neural membranes and proteins form various entangled quantum states some of which survive decoherence through quantum Zeno effects or in decoherence-free subspaces and then collapse contextually via irreversible and non-computable means producing consciousness and, in turn, the collective spin dynamics associated with said collapses have effects through spin chemistry on classical neural activities thus influencing the neural networks of the brain. Our proposal calls for extension of associative encoding of neural memories to the dynamical structures of neural membranes and proteins. Thus, according our theory, the nuclear spin ensembles are the “mind-screen” with nuclear spins as its pixels, the neural membranes and proteins are the mind-screen and memory matrices, and the biologically available paramagnetic species such as O2 and NO are pixel-activating agents. Together, they form the neural substrates of consciousness. We also present supporting evidence and make important predictions. We stress that our theory is experimentally verifiable with present technologies. Further, experimental realizations of intra-/inter-molecular nuclear spin coherence and entanglement, macroscopic entanglement of spin ensembles and NMR quantum computation, all in room temperatures, strongly suggest the possibility of a spin-mediated mind. #wrong
