In an effort to get better at drawing... I have taken on a curséd (read: excellent) project...

Most of the time, I draw squid. Those squid come from images by deep sea submersibles and other photographers. I would like to be able to just dream up an animal and draw it, but my friends, I am simply not there. Not even close.

So I have decided to... go on a journey. A journey of skill development.

That brings us to my friend HoneyTree @choreophilia, who is a very talented burlesque dancer. Her instagram is full of lovely pictures of her in all sorts of saucy poses.

Years ago, when I met Honeytree's fiancé Adam(who is now one of my besties), he introduced me to his favorite misunderstood swamp monster, Man-Thing. His enthusiasm for Man-thing, and my natural love of monsters, made Man-Thing a quick favorite in this household.

So there I was. I needed to improve upon creating art not-directly-from-pictures, while still needed a foothold in reality...

Welp! Guess I'm going to start drawing Man-thing in saucy poses based on Honeytree!

And here's Man-Thing, who has been following HoneyTree for years on his finsta, and one day, while feeling himself in the swamps around Citrusville, decided to pose just like her.

Do I think this art is up to my skill-level standards? Well, no, not yet.

Buuuut, did I draw man-thing's vine-tentacle falling over his eye like Timaree's hair falling over her eye and laugh for 3 straight minutes? YES.

So. I'm sharing it with you. With HoneyTree's permission. Because what an absurd thing to post without running it by her first.

As I work toward improving these skills, I will continue sharing these curséd ... works... with you along the day.

people are drawing Steamboat Willie Mickey doing all this crazy shit and whatnot, but you could always do that. you can do that now, with current Mickey, just fine. it's fanart and it's legally protected. hell you could take Disney-drawn Mickey and put a caption about unions or whatever on it and it would still be protected under free speech and sometimes even parody law.

what is special about public domain is that you can SELL him. you could take a screenshot and sell it on a tshirt. you can use him to advertise your plumbing business. people have already uploaded and monetized the original film.

you could always have Mickey say what you want, but now you can profit off it.

just found out my cousin (who lives in England) is in the art department of a bunch of shows??? And she worked oN DOCTOR WHO? AND HAD LUNCH WITH DAVID TENNANT???? and she just told me so casually because she's interested in the art, not the show? I mean, excuse me? She worked on SHERLOCK???? FOR A WHOLE SEASON?? She worked on Peaky Blinders and Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones??? And probably other things because she has a shitty memory and according to her everything is a blur?? AND AT ONE POINT SHE WAS LIKE: "oh and have you ever heard of Neil Gaiman?" And I was trying not to scream, because yes, of course I've heard of Neil, he's only my favorite author, I've only read like all of his books multiple times, and if you say you worked on Good Omens or the Sandman I'm going to lose it completely. So I said "yeah I've read a couple of his books," -you know, like a liar- "what about him?" and she goes "well I worked on one of his shows and he's brilliant i just can't remember which one" and i go "w-what do you mean he's brilliant? You're.. you're talking about his writing... his writing is brilliant, right?" And she cheerfully says "oh no I don't read books, I ment he was really nice and brilliant when I talked to him" and i go "WHAT DID YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT DID YOU TALK ABOUT" and she thinks for a moment and goes "oh! BRICKS" WHAT IN THE WORLD YES NO THAT MAKES SENSE YOU GET TO WORK AND TALK WITH NEIL FUCKING GAIMAN AND YOU TALK ABOUT BRICKS?
