*wakes up in a cold sweat* the reason the black rose arc had to be forgotten by everyone is because its foundational tenet operated on giving the Brides agency to protest against their role in the dueling system and seek to leave it, further exemplified by its final shot being that of anthy's complicitness in the dueling game. the black rose arc gives a 'voice to the voiceless' and exploits their rage against their lives into rage against the Bride - which though it furthers ohtori's system of oppression (the dueling game is built upon exploiting the internal conflicts of the duelists after all), the methodology of giving 'voices' to the Brides by allowing them to Speak Their Mind within the framework of 'self improvement' via seeking out therapy is shown to be antithetical to ohtori academy as a whole because true self actualization of the bride will mean the end of ohtori academy as a system. in this essay i will

I might have controversial opinions on the "Faerghus Four." Mostly that it doesn't exist, and at worst, it exists to exclude Dedue.
Yes, Dimitri, Ingrid, Sylvain, and Felix grew up together, but that was as children. While that history is significant to their relationships, it ignores everything after. With the tragedy of Duscur, Dimitri and Dedue became inseparable while Felix was sickened by them, Ingrid couldn't overlook Dedue's connection to the tragedy, and Sylvain's apathy grew.
Past the age of ~15, you can't ignore how Dedue and the tragedy affects their relationships. I don't see just the four of them as a friend group, especially not without him because he's so important to Dimitri and the themes of Faerghus.

Nightmare
While staying at Legend’s house, Four has a nightmare. He receives comfort and cuddles from the Vet and his partner
Legend wasn’t sure what woke him at first. He took a moment to cast his senses out, trying to figure out what brought him out of his (for once) peaceful slumber. It was still dark out, the only noise crickets singing and Ravio’s quiet breathing beside him. Nothing seemed out of place.
He furrowed his brow and rolled over to try and go back to sleep.
Perhaps a minute passed before his ear twitched and he scowled. Legend pushed himself up, biting back an annoyed sound, and ground the heels of his palms against his eyes with a quiet groan. Golden Goddesses, can he sleep through the night at least once in his life???
He slipped out of bed and moved for the door. He might as well check out whatever it was keeping him from his desired rest. Maybe it would go away and let him go back to bed... No, with his luck he’d probably have to chase it away with his fire rod.
Legend yanked the door open with a scowl only to start back in surprise. Four stood on the other side with a startled expression before his face pinched and he looked away. Legend opened his mouth to say something, snark about why he was lurking in the hallway at Din-damned o’clock, but then he took a closer look at the Smithy.
Four’s arms were wrapped tightly around himself and he was curled slightly inward. His hair was a mess and his sleep clothes were rumpled, like he’d been tossing and turning.
There was another quiet sound and Four turned fully away, holding himself even tighter as if afraid he would be made fun of. Legend frowned. This behaviour was odd, especially coming from the other hero.
Another small sound, followed by a sniffle, and Legend’s annoyance drained away as he realized what was going on: the smaller boy was crying, and trying to hide it.
It was the behaviour of someone obviously unwell but too afraid of mockery to ask for help.
Legend knew how he came across to the others - snarky, sarcastic, sharp-tongued, snappish. He did so on purpose, and though by now he knew they could see straight through it, it was an armor he’d worn for a long time. It kept him distant, but it kept him safe.
He couldn’t help but care, though, and this group of heroes was determined to drag it out of him into the light of day. The younger ones especially; he may hate being in charge in any way but that didn’t mean he didn’t look out for them in his own way.
(He was stubbornly ignoring that the others knew what he was doing, even if they pretended not to. The Veteran didn’t ‘do feelings,’ after all.)
Another muffled sniffle had him sighing, holding the door open and gesturing for the other to come in. “Well? Are you coming in or would you rather stand in the hallway all night?”
Four bit his lip before shuffling the few steps to the door, hesitating before stepping through and into the bedroom at another gesture from Legend. The sound of it closing behind him made him flinch, and then again when Legend put a hand on his shoulder in an attempt at comfort.
Then the older boy was moving towards the bed and Four followed behind on stumbling legs.
Legend patted the space between him and Ravio in invitation. Four clambered up after a moment, settling in awkwardly among the mess of pillows and blankets that made up the bed. Legend smirked at him, though the expression wasn’t unkind.
The two of them sat there for a moment, neither speaking, before there was a shuffle of fabric and a sleepy mumble from the other occupant of the bed.
“Hnn... Wus- wussgoinon?” Ravio slurred, blinking blearily as he tried to focus in the darkness of the room. Legend gave a small huffing laugh.
“Found someone lurkin’ in the hallway, Rav,” he replied. He ignored Four’s muttered ‘not lurking.’ “Figured it was better to bring ‘im in here than let ‘im freeze out there all night.”
“Oh. Okay.” Ravio blinked again, still mostly asleep, before the information fully registered and he pushed himself up, alert now. “Wait- why was there someone lurking in the hallway? I thought everyone else was downstairs? Are they hurt?”
Legend reached over to pat his shoulder. “Everyone else is downstairs, yeah. It’s the Smithy, and he’s not hurt that I know of. Unless,” he turned piercing eyes on the other, “you are? You better not be hidin’ something,” he threatened. Four shook his head, giving a self-deprecating little laugh.
“Not physically, no.”
Two sets of eyes focused on him at that, and he shrank back against the pillows.
Legend’s face pinched in that way that meant he was trying not to let his sharp tongue have its way and took a deep breath. Whatever he was about to say, though, Ravio beat him to it. The merchant reached out, pausing to let Four nod his consent, then gently set his hand on his arm.
“Nightmare?” he asked quietly. The softness of it made Four’s breath hitch and he nodded. Ravio rubbed his arm soothingly, which only served to make his eyes sting with tears again and he bit his lip in an attempt to keep it from trembling. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Four shook his head vehemently. He’d come up here to not think about it, and he’d prefer to keep it that way. He sniffled, rubbing at his eyes and unconsciously leaning towards the merchant, who hummed and pulled him into a gentle hug. He felt Legend pat him on the back, somewhat awkwardly, but still intended to be comforting.
The obvious care broke something in Four and he dissolved into exhausted tears.
Warmth surrounded him. Ravio pulled him closer and Legend began to run his hand through his hair, making Four shudder at the feeling. He sniffled, slowly feeling himself begin to relax.
A few minutes later his tears slowed and he sighed, resting his head on Ravio’s chest. Legend continued to run his fingers through his hair. Another minute and the small hero drifted off.
Legend watched as Four finally fell into sleep, the lines etched into his face fading as the tenseness left his body. He ran his fingers through the younger boy’s hair one more time, noticing he still had his headband on. The vet eased it off and turned to set it on the bedside table; hopefully the lack of pressure around his temples would help him sleep a little easier.
Turning back around, he was treated to the sight of Ravio yawning, showing off the slight bucktooth that Legend had always found adorable, clutching Four to his chest. The sight sent something fond through him and he couldn’t help but smile softly.
He gave his partner a nuzzle before the two of them moved to get resettled under the blankets. They lay facing each other with Four cuddled between them, his face still stained with tears but his expression calm.
With his family calm and relaxed beside him, Legend closed his eyes and let himself fall asleep.

I'm not including a situation where someone might be injured because in that case I'm thinking the bed goes to them by default or they are nominated for it. anyone who wants to be chatty goes to join the living room floor gang.
What are your thoughts and headcanons? Do you have thoughts on how the boys tend to approach assigning beds in inns? Who do the chain choose to sleep near when camping and why? What are their dynamics like when settling down for the night and getting ready for the day?
In "Mirror Vs Open Closet Door: Fight!" by Gintrinsic (here) Four refers to the chain's decision on how to split up between inn rooms as the "Link-per-room ratio" which I find very funny. He, Sky, and Time also talk about their thought process behind why they do or don't want to sleep in a room with some of the others which I find fun and interesting.
So! If you have thoughts and want to share them! *gestures to the post!*
#linked universe#linkeduniverse#alrighty! now for my answers-#for the ranch question I think it varies which is why I'm asking in a poll. What do you think happens most often though?#each answer is a fun scenario so it's difficult to choose#but I think they'd try to act politely around Malon and Time for the first couple visits with straws or rock paper scissors#or showing generosity by offering the bed to someone else. (I bet Malon saying they're charming is quite the incentive#for more possible compliments. The chain as a whole would want to prove her right xD )#Once they're more comfortable in the house though I can totally see Wind and Legend making a mad dash for it while Wars yells after them xD#Wind probably ends up sharing with Four a lot since they're the littles#or Wind snuggles in with Wars Legend Wild etc#Wild and Twi/Wolfie have claimed the spot on the floor by the fireplace.#For inn rooms / castle rooms / camping - I tend to group them by how they're grouped a lot already#but a lil mixed up#Time - Sky - Wars are the good rest trio. they want a good night's rest please let them get their beauty sleep. often joined by Four#Wars goes between this group and wherever Legend is depending on how chatty he is that night.#Twi - Wild - Hyrule are snuggle/proximity buddies#Legend is attached to Hyrule's hip or sets up near Warriors to gossip and gripe. I can also see him setting up near Wild#in the eye of the storm as it were or just an interesting place to be. Wild and Hyrule can get to chatting about everything and anything#so if Legend wants background noise (Hyrule and Wild podcast omg)-#or a conversation he can be half a part of and jump in and out of while getting ready for the night or in the mornings-#this is a good place to be. add Wind and things get a bit more chaotic.#Wind gravitates to Wars and Legend too when curious and chatty. He gravitates towards Time when he wants something calmer.#Four tends to be near Sky or Twi or to Legend's group for the same reasons#I can see Four and Twi having a little book club going during downtimes where they talk about what they're reading. Sky likes to listen. <3#Wind thinks they're nerds but so is he and he can't resist a good story so he orbits and sometimes settles in and peppers questions.#it's funny that Time Sky and Wars want to sleep the most but Legend follows Wars to chat (and ends up bringing people with him xD )#there could be some conflict there oooo#Twi is by Time#it's almost a circle but with clusters of sleeping bags near on top of each other and filling the gaps

I went into Ruth expecting a dreary read. How could a Victorian "fallen woman" story be anything other than dark and depressing? So I was shocked right from the beginning to find a sweet, gentle, romantic story. The dressmaker's apprentice who sits in the coldest, darkest part of the workroom because that's where there's a panel painted with flowers that remind her of her country home? How could I not adopt her as a favorite character? Ruth's innocent, romantic outlook on life gave us some beautiful descriptions of the scenery of both city and countryside, and my imagination went on overdrive to create very vivid images of the story. Even the love story, which we know is going to go very wrong, starts out sweet, with a kind, charming love interest who only shows flashes of just how wrong his character is going to go.
Even after Ruth's fall, the story is so gentle, putting Ruth among kind people who are willing to risk and sacrifice a lot to help her. And then the story gets almost too gentle--after some initial struggles with depression, Ruth resolves to bear her troubles patiently and work toward virtue, and her sweet, too-innocent character gets flattened out into someone who's just Good. Life just goes on, with things generally going well, and every potential turn toward drama results in someone deciding to be reasonable, which can make the story drag.
But, in a story like this, the lack of drama becomes the plot twist! It is refreshing to see characters who don't always jump to the worst conclusion or take the worst action, who pause and consider the whole story and act like decent human beings.
And in the places when the drama does kick in, it's good drama. Painful drama. It's also (especially in the last section of the story) melodrama. There were sections of the book where I was rolling my eyes at the cookie-cutter Victorian path the story was taking--but then there'd be one line or one moment that would just stab me in the chest because of how beautifully specific it was to this story. Just enough to elevate it from something bland to something unique and fascinating.
I often had the thought that this book could be about a third of its length without losing anything--yet it should also be just as long as it was. If the story cut all its repetitive musings about Ruth's regret, and used that space to develop the side characters and and show the plot instead of telling us about it, it would be a much deeper story. I found myself wishing Gaskell had reworked this one later in her career--the way that North and South was a more skillful reworking of the issues explored in Mary Barton. In a way, she sort of did in Wives and Daughters, with the story of Molly the quiet innocent getting tangled up in the intrigues surrounding her headstrong, flirtatious stepsister Cynthia serving as a more layered, personality-flipped version of the story where headstrong, sheltered Jemima gets tangled in the story of quiet, sweet Ruth and her past romantic intrigues. (The doctor at the end of the story also feels like a proto-Mr. Gibson).
Yet I'm still fascinated by the themes specific to this story. Contrary to expectation, this "fallen woman" story isn't about sex, or gender, or how unfairly women are treated (though it does touch on that in the end). It's about sin. It's not questioning why Ruth's behavior is considered a sin or looking to dismantle the society saying that it's a sin. It comes from the Christian perspective of saying that sin is real and harms people--so how are we going to deal with that?
The story shows lots of people struggling with temptation, failing, and dealing with the consequences (or harming others with the consequences). Sin is always a case of either not caring enough to do the more difficult, good thing, or a case of "the ends justify the means", where people rationalize their bad behavior as something necessary in this specific case. It always leads to harm, but some people--and some sins--suffer greater consequences in the eyes of the world, whether or not they deserve it. I wish the story had developed and resolved this theme better in places, but the raw material there is fascinating food for thought.
This book is Gaskell at her preachiest, but also Gaskell at her kindest. It explores deep, difficult issues in a very loving way. As a story, there are ways it could be better, but I'm very glad I read it. Perhaps I'm making a point to be kinder to it because I know it's the type of story that today's readers tend to judge harshly. But amid my issues with the story, there are some lovely images, some great messages, and some wonderful characters that going to be living in my heart for a long time.
