Remember The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock? The movie showed how a kid who had an extremely rough upbringing got help from the family of a school friend, found success in football and ultimately ended up being adopted by the family. Turns out he was never adopted.
Tumblr media
Michael Oher says that he was tricked by the Tuohy family into signing documents that made them his conservators. Since he was already 18 at the time the family told him, “that it means pretty much the exact same thing as 'adoptive parents,' but that the laws were just written in a way that took [his] age into account.”
Oher also says that papers were signed so that his story and likeness were given away for free to use in The Blind Side. He also never got a single royalty check for the hugely successful, Oscar nominated film in the 14 years since its release.

I love that Phoenix is so father figure coded in the main trilogy with Pearl. Like the official art where she's napping on his thigh or being held up by him to put up Christmas tree ornaments, and the whole vibe of him bringing her along to crime scenes, and in the stage play where she gets scared and freezes in place so he just picks her up like a stack of firewood. Even from the second game when he's only like 25 he's been irrefutably dad-shaped. It should've been the least surprising thing to happen when AJ first came out that Phoenix had become a dad. That's been an important part of his personality, he probably was born to be a girldad more than an attorney.
anyway it's also really funny to think about him lowkey adopting the half-sister of the woman who tried to kill him and her twin sister who tricked him into thinking that she was his girlfriend.

There is nothing more eye-opening than realizing fandom culture would shove your ocs into a nuclear family dynamic when they very explicitly are in non-nuclear family dynamics.

Thinking of making a short silly fanfic that's literally just Zhongli adopting kids and with every kid the people around him get more exasperated because they're genuinely worried he's gonna go bankrupt
It's like
Zhongli - adopts Ganyu
Them- okay but be careful your finances aren't great
Zhongli- adopts Xiao
Them- okay please you're really stretching your finances here
Zhongli-adopts hu tao
Them- Zhongli please no more kids
Zhongli - starts adopting Qiqi
Them- Zhongli, Zhongli please
Zhongli - fully adopts Qiqi
Them- Zhongli please your finances can't handle this. No you can't adopt every wayward child. What are you doing ? no ! No more children!

Rereading the beginning of the Alex Adoption Fic and delighted to find out that Willie brings a little teddy bear for Alex on his first hospital visit.
Needless to say that I'm now trying to incorporate that bear everywhere I possibly can.
Still accepting name suggestions for the teddy bear because, for some reason, Alex likes neither Willbeart nor Billie for it (which where probably suggested by the boys and totally not me).

Deaged Oz AU - Atlas Hospital Scene Part III
Oz swam back to consciousness slowly, still lying in the comfortable bed he had been in when what he was certain had to have been a dream happened. The room still smelled like all hospitals, but his fingers were clutched around the hilt of his cane, which he knew he hadn't had when he arrived here. Did that mean this was real, then? That they forgave him? Surely not... he'd lied to them. Lied to himself, tried to make the best of an impossible situation and an impossible war. Salem could not be beaten. She could not be defeated, the others hadn't signed up for this. They were just going to get themselves killed. 'Neither did you' a small voice seemed to echo in his head, but he shook it. He was what he needed to be, it was his fault after all. Everything was, hadn't those in the Vale told him that enough times?
How much of what he remembered had been a dream and how much of it reality? Surely he could not truly be the kidnapped Schnee child? They would have found out by now, right? Someone, somewhere, would have checked? The thought of being related to Jaques Schnee in any way, shape or form was deeply disquieting to him. He wasn't used to hating anyone but Salem, but that man certainly made it to the same exclusive little list.
There was a sound as several people filed in. Oscar, James... Winter, Weiss. Qrow! Qrow was here. He'd actually come back, he didn't hate him. He wasn't sure what he would have done if Qrow hated him, ran away again, perhaps? Not that that had worked last time, but there were more places to get lost in Atlas, it would be far easier to hide. He swallowed, bracing himself to be yelled at.
"Oh, Oz..." Qrow sounded sad, noticing how tense he'd become. "You're safe, I promise, okay?"
"Qrow? I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry."
"Yeah, pocket sized, so am I. Never should have reacted like that, but the circumstances... it won't happen again. I've said that already, but I'm not sure how much of that you remember. They had you on a lot of the good stuff and I know how much that messes you up."
Oz's head did feel far clearer as he turned to gaze at the others. James and Winter seemed to be staring at each other as though having a silent conversation. James sighed, seeming to have lost the argument.
"We need to talk. Whether you should be or not, your body is currently that of an eleven year old boy and as such you are highly vulnerable."
Oz opened his mouth, about to protest, but James just raised an eyebrow at him.
"None of us want Jaques Schnee to find out that you used to be Winter Schnee, since his marriage to your sister would technically mean that you would fall under his control. None of us are going to allow that. Therefore, you have something of a choice."
"A... choice?" Oz really didn't like the sound of this.
"As to guardian. Myself, or Winter. She has the added benefit of a blood relationship but I could probably protect you better. I assume you don't particularly wish to be seperated from Oscar? He claims you as a brother, after all."
"I don't need a guardian, James. I'm not actually a child."
"Yes, Oz. You are. More, you are incredibly vulnerable at the moment. If Salem or one of her people find out about you, as an unaccompanied eleven year old you would make a prime target. You have, after all, been kidnapped before."
There was a flash of hurt in Oz's eyes and James looked like he regretted the phrasing of his words, but he kept on anyway, voice stern. "I will also be taking temporary custody of Oscar. He has no real Huntsman training and you are far too young to be expected to have any real proficency."
Oz blushed at that, glaring up at James. Winter interrupted.
"It's not that you're not fully capable, uncle. But whether you like it or not, you are currently a child. While you are here, it would be far better for all involved were you to have at least nominal protection."
"Think of it this way. While you are under my care, so is Oscar. Wouldn't you prefer to have him protected?"
"You're starting to sound like you wouldn't protect the pipsqueak if it wasn't for Oz, Jimmy." Qrow's voice carried a warning. "That's not a good look."
"Of course I'd protect Oscar. But like it or not, he's far less important in all this than Ozpin is."
"Oscar. Matters." Oz bit out, his glare icy now.
James sighed. "I never stated that he didn't. I'm not actually that good at this, Oz. I have never been in this situation before. Can you at least agree that keeping you out of Jaques Schnee's hands is by far the best option here?"
"I think if I was forced to be in close contact with him, something regrettable might happen. Probably to him. Okay. What exactly do we need to do? And have you asked Oscar's aunt, yet? She is his guardian, after all."
"Both of ours, technically." Oscar sounded amused. "Or did you forget that... Tip?"
Oz winced. "My question stands."
"Yes, I talked to her. She agrees that you two need the extra protection while you're here. Besides, I have access to a great deal of training scenarios both of you could use. We might even be able to source a better weapon for young Oscar."
Oscar's eyes lit up and Oz sighed. He was likely going to regret this, wasn't he?
Qrow looked briefly regretful. "Sorry I didn't volunteer, pocket sized, but..."
"But it would be highly inappropriate, considering certain other considerations. It is fine, Qrow. That you're here is enough."
Winter stared at the two of them, a look of mild horror on her face as the Lien finally dropped. Weiss looked like she really needed some form of brain bleach at the imagery, though thankfully it seemed to entirely go over Oscar's head.
James filled out the paperwork then and there. He was the temporary guardian of Oscar and Tip Pine less than five minutes later.
Although part of James, too, worried that he may end up regretting this...

Hello,
I was wondering if you could help me find a fic I had read what feels like a couple years ago. The big theme I really remember of if was Ron had gotten Hermione and another girl (possibly Lavender) pregnant and Ron essentially told Hermione that her baby wasn’t his and he would never acknowledge it. That lead to some magical tie breaking and Hermione was getting sick. Draco comes in and takes over the father role and blood adopts the child while it was still in the womb and when the baby was born it looked like him. And I believe it comes out that the other baby wasn’t even Ron’s and he tried to get Hermione back but she was already happy with Draco.
It might be a long shot and it’s possible I am combining different fanfics but I figured I at least had to try. Thank you for all that you do for everyone here! It is much appreciated and loved.
Auribus Teneo Lupum by BlossomPrincess16  - M, 17 chapters - Hermione never thought that she’d end up pregnant and alone, but it seems that she is now stuck in such a predicament. She also never thought that Draco Malfoy(now a Healer and changed man)would offer to marry her and adopt -through magic- her child. This is a mutually beneficial arrangement, so why is she finding herself falling for the handsome blonde? And why is she kissing him!

suddenly struck with thoughts about the devastating concept of Jason Todd
because he was good. because he had a bleeding heart despite every reason not to. he loved school and was good at it. he was the first to be adopted, with little pretense of guardianship. he did everything he could to be a perfect Robin and live up to an impossible ideal. he only ever wanted Bruce and Dick to like him.
because he met Bruce in the same place and on the same day that Bruce's parents died--the single defining moment of Batman's existence. and he made Batman laugh. he hit the Dark Knight, Terror of Gotham, with a tire iron. he wasn't afraid of the man who turned fear into a weapon.
because he couldn't save his mother from herself, but he tried. because he was too good not to try and save the woman who gave him up. too good to play the Joker's game. the crowbar didn't kill him, the bomb did. he died knowing he wouldn't make it and tried anyway. he died a hero.
because other Robins have died, but none of them put an irrevocable tear in the mythos of Batman. because Jason Todd always dies, in every universe. he dies for the sins of his father. he was put to death by popular vote, sacrificed by the crowd. doomed by the narrative and doomed by the audience. the boy who only ever tried to prove he was good enough--wasn't good enough.
because he has every reason to be angry. because he didn't ask to be murdered, didn't ask to be brought back, and when he did everyone acted like he was better off dead. Bruce tried to kill him and nearly succeeded. he's blamed for his own death and blamed for his resurrection. he can never come home because the house is haunted by his own ghost.
because he's been the hero, the victim, and the villain. because his family and his writers and his universe don't know what to make of him. they don't know how to look his tragedy in the eye. and how can you?
it hurts to look at the hero who cannot be good enough, the victim who will only ever be angry, the villain who can sometimes be right. the audience hates to feel complicit and, in this exceptional case, they are.

What would you suggest as an alternative to adoption? What’s the ideal? I really want to know.
Family preservation. Keep children within their families, cultures & communities at all costs.
An unplanned pregnancy doesn't mean the child is unwanted. Most mothers want to keep their child but they don't have the resources to do so. We need to ensure mothers have the resources & support to raise their child comfortably & safely. We have more than enough resources to make that a reality but we choose not to because money matters more to us for some reason.
Adoption should only be done if no other option is available & most of the time there are better options. Legal guardianship is one of those options. There may be a family friend or relative who can take legal responsibility for the child & the community can come together and help raise them. We're always saying "it takes a village to raise a child", right? We need to start acting on that saying instead of selling babies.

speaking of professional dx, i think it's important to recognize that professionally dx'd disabled people are at a severe legal disadvantage compared to disabled people who purely self-id; one of the reasons i'm so intensely pro-self-dx and actively advocate for people to self-dx over professional dxing is because professional diagnosis comes with a cavalcade of systemic oppression and violence from the state, no matter what country you're in.
some things that professional diagnosis of a disability might do, depending on what disability and which country you live in:
bar you from adopting children
get your preexisting children removed from your care
bar you from immigration to most countries
open you up to conservatorship or other form of legal guardianship past the age of majority by your parents or other adults who care for your medical needs, without regard for your consent
remove your ability to consent to medical procedures or withhold consent for medical procedures
bar you from accessing gender care (if trans)
obviously, there's plenty of resources that are artificially gatekept behind professional diagnosis, like mobility aids that are only affordable through insurance, prescription medication, testing like blood tests and MRIs, AAC devices, and more. but i think it's important to remember that those of us who need these things aren't necessarily privileged by our professional diagnoses, insomuch as we're forced into a situation where we have to subject ourselves to endless state violence via professional diagnosis in order to have access to those necessary resources.
i think it's particularly important for those of us professionally diagnosed to remember that. there's a tendency in some circles to treat professional diagnosis like it makes us better or more "legitimately disabled" than self-id disabled folks; this isn't true and it's important to remember that we shouldn't feel the need to define ourselves by a thing that actively harms us. plus, just because someone doesn't have a professional diagnosis doesn't mean they don't need the resources that are kept behind it; often it means they can't afford to weather the state violence that comes with the dx, and so instead they have to suffer without medication or aids or testing and have a significantly worse and shorter life because of this. just because they have legal privilege over you doesn't mean they necessarily have social privilege over you or quality-of-life privilege.
