Faith Ringgold. The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles. Acrylic on canvas with pieced fabric border. 1991.
Faith Ringgold passed away this week at the age of 93.
The multimedia artist was known for her explorations of African American identity, issues of race, gender and community. Her story quilts often injected political commentary into storytelling imagery, reflecting on African American history, with a wry sense of humor.
A truly influential presence, she worked in soft sculpture, masks, painting, and textiles, among other media. Sensitive to many art histories, she created new narratives that never shied away from critiquing the gendered, racial biases of the traditional canon.

Celebrating Black History Month by highlighting two incredible visual artists. You may have seen Chris Pyrate’s artwork around Washington, DC. He is also called the “fake florist.” He is a prolific muralist who has partnered with companies like Nike, UNIQLO and Adidas. Another favorite of ours is Edmonia Lewis, a formative sculptor from New York who challenged the art world. Sign up for our newsletter for more info about today’s Black History highlights. If you’d like to nominate an artist, feel free to DM us. @chrispyrate Photo credit: 1- David Andrews @dandrewsphoto 2- Elvert Barnes @elvertxbarnes #BlackArtistsMatter #BlackHistoryMonth #CelebrateBlackArt #SupportBlackArtists #DiversityInArts #ArtistsOfColor #EmpoweringBlackArtists #BlackArtHeritage #HonoringBlackArtists #BlackArtistryMatters #AfricanAmericanArtists #BlackArtInMotion #BlackCultureInArt #BlackExcellenceInArt #BlackVoicesInArt #BuildingBlackArtCommunities #ShineALightOnBlackArt #ThePowerOfBlackArt #BlackArtInspiration #BlackArtLegacy #dmvartist #dmvartists #dcartist (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoLF4lLuuq_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Much to my surprise, today I learned that I can now say that my photos have been published in a book! Congratulations to the always amazing @richardwatson.biz for having his work featuring in “Shifting Time: African American Artists 2020-2021”. The book explores how contemporary Black artists responded to the emotional and cultural challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, social justice movements, and political upheaval during this critical period of turmoil and uncertainty. The authors of the book are Klare Scarborough and @verbena2160. Find out more online and make sure to order the book! #shiftingtime #richardwatson #africanamericanartists (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnXwEToPCM2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Little Boy and the Old Man
by Shel Silverstein (1930-1999)
Said the little boy, “Sometimes I drop my spoon.”
Said the little old man, “I do that too.”
The little boy whispered, “I wet my pants.”
“I do that too,” laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, “I often cry.”
The old man nodded, “So do I.”
“But worst of all,” said the boy, “it seems
Grown-ups don’t pay attention to me.”
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
“I know what you mean,” said the little old man.

Roy DeCarava (1919 - 2009) Untitled (Man with Portfolio), 1950s Gelatin Silver Print 14 x 11 in. ~ We are proud to exhibit this elegant photograph by Roy DeCarava in our current show “Selections from the Hamptons Virtual Art Fair 2020”. “Untitled (Man with Portfolio)”, ca. 1950s was taken only about a decade after DeCarava began photographing. This work is a perfect example of the refined simplicity of DeCarava’s style. Oblivious of his observer, as most of DeCarava’s characters are, an older man leans against a pole with a National Alliance of Businessmen portfolio that declares “hire, train, retain”. His sharp attire, completed with a feathered top hat, inclines us to believe that this man is in search of a job or is a manager that benefits from the government program – a testament to the Black job market in New York in the 1950’s. He is balanced on his right arm that is hidden behind his back and his fingers clasp a sheet of paper. This moment of isolated self-reflection, something so discreet, fleeting and rare in New York City, is so delicately and surreptitiously captured by DeCarava. ~ #billhodgesgallery #gallery #nycgallery #artgallery #africanamericanartist #supportminorityartists #supportthearts #artworld #billhodges #billhodgesgallery #africanamerican #africanamericanart #blackartist #blackartists #africanamericanartists #blackexcellence #americanmaster #masterartist #roydecarava #decarava #manwithportfolio #gelatinsilverprint https://www.instagram.com/p/CGDRNyjlZ9C/?igshid=18iclx85uzs9k
