Reblogs appreciated !!!!
[Image ID: Two digital drawings of original characters. The first is a full-body drawing of a pink-haired girl with large fairy wings and a flowery outfit floating with an excited look on her face. The second is a half-body drawing of a blond and tan man wearing a bright green and yellow jacket over a white tank top. He is grinning at the viewer and making a gun hand gesture to his head with hearts coming out the other side. His other hand is making a heart with his thumb and pointer fingers. /END ID]

Another installation of Chain Link Gallery featuring Massart alum ('09) Stephen Hamilton. Located at 48 Geneva Avenue across from the Grove Hall Branch of the Boston Public Library, this installation features Hamilton's "Founders Project." The project re-imagines Boston Public School High-School students as the legendary founders of the West and West-Central African ethnic groups, that are part of the ancestral base for the African diaspora.

It was a cold and windy May day for this installation. Each work of art we unfolded kept our spirits warm and motivated. We also got some help from Grove Hall Library's new Head Librarian and former Teen Librarian, Celia Contelmo.
Tumblr media
This project was the outcome of an international residency to West Africa where Hamilton learned several key art forms such as weaving, dying and wood carving. Now the beauty of this series can grace the streets of Dorchester and inspire members of the Grove Hall extended community.

Come hear Pan-African Artist, Stephen Hamilton's personal journey from Dorchester, to West Africa and back again as artist, researcher, professor and educator. Join us on Thursday May 25th from 5:30 - 7:00 at the Grove Hall Public Library for a spirited conversation with the artist.

The Dream Team! Celia Contelmo, Head Librarian, Grove Hall Branch BPL, Isabelle Higgins, Sparc! Program Associate and me, Ekua Holmes.
MassArt’s Center for Art and Community Partnerships through sparc! the ArtMobile Creative Spaces presents: Chain Link Galleries in collaboration with community partners such as Project RIGHT Inc. and the Grove Hall Public Library. sparc! transforms highly visible chain link fences into outdoor galleries featuring the work of community artists.
The aim of the project is to provide inspiration, encouragement, and visual vitality to our community. As we navigate these uncertain times, art can provide a healing balm to the soul and allow us to collectively envision a future of new possibilities.

Do you have any tips or little insider tips for people who’re going to be animation students at massart?
be respectful to everyone in the department bc they aren’t just professors/faculty, they’re going to be your connections, do you favors, and stick their necks out for you when you really need them (peggy and adam do a ton of behind-the-scenes work for students).
take a story writing/scriptwriting class if you can, a lot of the animation program here is based on learning technique and using different mediums/programs. knowing how to write a story quickly will rly speed up your creative process.
buy at least two large external hard drives, i use LaCie hard drives. you get unlimited space on a google drive with your student account, but once you graduate you’ll lose that drive, and you’ll still want an external drive while ur a student anyway!!
if ur going to b on campus, don’t spend a night in the Uberkitchen alone. it’s rly fun to get ur work done sleep deprived with ur friends instead of going crazy on ur own
also, it’s really tempting to get swept up in the pressure to just be the best, make the most, learn the most, have the highest following/best style/ most connections, etc. especially if you’re an incoming freshman, no matter what age. do your best to ignore as much of that as you can, all that matters is you’re a good learner and an honest, kind person. professors here can tell right away the students who are just trying to climb a ladder and have no intention of learning anything. art style impresses your peers but in the end it’s your work ethic and honesty that will get you places. if you’re struggling, can’t finish homework, can’t go to class, be honest. there’s very few people in the department who haven’t been where you’ve been and are sympathetic to the stresses of life.
it’s a rly great department, take advantage of as many opportunities as u can, but don’t stress. liz, dan, leland, and jake will probs be some of the first professors you meet and they’re great!!! good luck :))

In my Graphic Design II course, our current project involves creating logo lockups, exploring packaging options, and crafting a comprehensive brand guideline for a unique restaurant brand. The name I've decided on is "Bep Kho Qua," although that wasn't my original choice. At the outset, I had named the restaurant "Kho Qua," a phrase that translates to "suffering (is) over" in my native Vietnamese language.
During the second week of the assignment, I delved into creating initial logo sketches. I ventured into experimentation, exploring abbreviations, and making connections with the name. Here are some of the concepts I came up with.

It's taken a lot of experimentation, but I'm finally feeling the visual surface that I building up for "Chough'd!" (wip excerpt from page six) A combination of scanned paper texture, traditional inking, and digital coloring. The workflow is still not as I want it, but every installment gets better. And, I managed to hide this Marauder's Map of MassArt in the background. Am I double-dipping right?
