april fools day
shoto todoroki, from a distance seems cold, stoic, uninterested. this is how people with an untrained eye see him at the mention of pranks and the jokes that come with april fools day. no one would suspect anything remotely silly from him, despite you thinking he was one of the funniest people you knew
maybe his humor was dry, sarcastic and doting onto oblivious; but he was funny
so when he walked out of his dorm on april first, you watched carefully waiting to see what was up his sleeve
but then you saw it
his usual head of white and red hair was switched, the white section now falling over his scarred eye and vice versa
simple. but funny.
you shot him a knowing look and pointed to his head and he passed you a smile
“i won’t say anything about it for your sake”
“thank you”
but now you were wishing you had said something. no one else noticed. no one saw behind shoto’s eyes brimming with excitement about his practical joke, just yearning for everyone else to notice.
but the acknowledgment never came.
so when you saw him sulk out of the bathroom, hair back to its normal state, face displaying the faintest bit of what you would see as hurt. and no one else noticed.
you caught up to him walking to his room for the night
“hey sho, i thought your prank was really funny, i’m sorry no else noticed”
he turned to face you and you could see his eyes light again
“funny?”
“yeah i thought it was really funny, you’re like one of the funniest people here in my opinion”
his heart swelled at this confession. you thought he was funny. such a simple compliment to someone else but something so grand. you weren’t calling him pretty or strong, praises he was so accustomed to hearing; but you thought he was funny.
he tucked away the smile that was threatening to spill out and packed away the yearning to pull you in and hold you tight. he packed all these feeling into a “thank you”
thank you for noticing. thank you for understanding. thank you for really seeing him.
and when he tucked himself into bed that night, he laid there thinking of all the other ways he could make you laugh or smile just so he could hear those words again.

the gaang and “do they shoplift”
aang: yes, because he enjoys the fun little thrill of it.
katara: yes, because she enjoys “sticking it to the man” and considers it praxis.
sokka: not unless he’s truly desperate, because he knows that he’d get caught and given a life sentence will die in jail if he so much as takes a single apple.
toph: yes, because it’s fun and also praxis.
zuko: not unless you count that time that azula slipped a diamond necklace in his pocket and then pretended to have no idea why zuko would ever do such a horrible thing after he got in trouble for it.
suki: yeah of course. it’s literally fine and necessary to do.
azula: she is a law abiding citizen!! but also she steals red lipstick sometimes, just to feel something. she doesn’t even need it, since she already has 200 tubes of red lipstick at home. but what’s one more?
mai: yes, even though she obviously doesn’t need to, because she’s bored and loves a quiet rebellion.
ty lee: she doesn’t need to because she already gets things for free just by batting her big brown eyes at various men who offer to buy her everything her heart desires. she’s never paid for a single object in her life.

this is somewhat of a vent post & something i said i would not do again but has been plaguing me enough that i think getting it out might feel better. so. has anydoggy else been. Baffled and upset by nora sakavic’s refusal to speak on how terribly aftg has treated its characters of color? with the author of the series coming back with a new book and starting up on her online activity again, and questions of what she’d change about aftg bubbling up, it’s particularly glaring to me that we are all playing this very long game of pretend where we ignore how badly the non-white cast has been treated & her lack of thoughts on it
and i understand not wanting to bring up nicky and thea because people pick on her for it. i’m not trying to discredit nora sakavic’s terrible history of getting harrassed online by aftg fans. but i think it is very cynical, and it is very juvenile, and most of all very cruel, that she gets to ignore the very real ways the books have set up these characters to be hated. i think it’s obvious why the characters who get the most hate are the only canonical characters of color, and i think we do not get to treat this like a deliberate decision on the fandom’s part when the books have put these same characters in degrading and embarrassing and terrible positions in the first place. aftg is not a story about nice characters with clean pasts, but there is a very specific nastiness to the only characters of color being a brown man who sexually harasses and later assaults the main character, a black woman whose only scene is her lashing out at her love interest after being ignored for the first two books, and the japanese villain who gets maybe two lines of complexity before he goes back to being a terrible person. the white cast, in comparison, while not at all free from flaws, are never shown to commit mindless evil; all of their actions are ultimately justified. the book goes out of its way to give them concession after concession. we know exactly who to side with, because aftg tells us who these people are. does nicky’s assault ever get addressed in the books? does riko’s reasoning to be the way that he is ever gets more than briefly aluded to? is thea reserved even a shred of humanity or grace in her one scene?
anyway. it’s been years of talking about this and the fandom has been constantly hostile to criticism in this regard, and more recently any criticism at all, and it’s Grating to be on the other side of this discussion. it’s exhausting to know that in ten years we do not get even an acknowledgment besides the author saying she will not answer questions about nicky and thea anymore. it’s upsetting and it’s ugly and i wish no one had to talk about this again, but we do because what i thought was common sense has been washed away by a sudden influx of no-nuance adoration for the trilogy. basically i hope we all explode

The four Sages were called back into the past by Terrako and they remember it happening
Tulin got to meet his hero, Revali, and decided to be just like him, adopting his idol’s brash personality and drive. He practises Revali’s Gale and eventually comes up with his own way to show off his mastery of wind, and when trouble hits his home he rushes to fix it on his own to prove how strong he has become and because, like Revali, he can’t stand idly by while he knows there’s still things he can do.
For Yunobo, when he goes back and meets his ancestor Daruk, he is a very timid and reactive Goron. He needs a push from others to come up with ideas and carry plans through, and when bad things happen to him his first instinct is to use his fire magic as a shield, to wait until the threat has passed by or somebody else has come to save him. But when he is sent back in time to Divine Beast vah Rudania, for the first time he has to be the one doing the saving. Daruk encourages Yunobo and is proud of him from the moment they meet, and it’s this support that gives Yunobo the confidence to help fight against Calamity Ganon, and to start YunoboCo when he gets home.
For Sidon, meeting his family from 100 years ago is bittersweet. He is proud that he was able to protect his sister, and it’s a comfort to know there is a version of him who will grow up alongside Mipha because of his bravery and fighting prowess. But as much joy as he got from seeing her, hugging her, and hearing her voice again, it just reminds him of how unfair her death was, of just how young she was when she died and how he is now older even though he’s the younger sibling. And at the end of the war, when he’s returned to their original time, he has to readjust to her absence all over again, and in light of that is it really a shock he’d have her statue moved further away from his home? And it also explains why he’s so desperate to protect Yona from the sludge.
Riju in AoC still a new ruler to her people, despite her accomplishments in BotW, she still feels guilty over the temporary loss of the Thunder Helm and isn’t sure if she can lead the Gerudo. She has a lot of confidence but is quick to falter when things go wrong. Urbosa treats Riju as a capable fighter despite her young age, and teaches her that she should never give up, to keep trying even when her resolve falters. There is always something you can do, even when it’s just stalling for time until help can arrive. Urbosa guides her in mastering the Thunderhelm, and possibly begins teaching her to summon lightning herself after Kohga attempts to steal it, and at the end of their time together Urbosa tells Riju she’s certain she’ll lead the Gerudo well. Riju treasured her time being mentored by Urbosa so much that she considers what Urbosa would do during the Upheaval in her diary in TotK.
I think the entire reason Tulin was added to the DLC was because the TotK team had already decided that Tulin was going to be the Sage of Wind, and that since the other sages were going to meet their Champions Tulin had to as well.
At some point in the years between Botw and TotK Teba, Tulin, Sidon, Yunobo, Riju and Patricia were summoned back in time by Terrako to aid the Champions during the Calamity, and even though those events took place in a parallel timeline and had no bearing on the world they returned to, the Sages’ personalities at the beginning of TotK are because of their experiences during the Calamity and the bonds they made with the Champions.
