Raf and Sulfus problems in the movie

Tbh I really don’t get how we pass from “see you next year my angel” to “I have to forget you”. I know the movie was created without really having a link to the first season but this point in particular is pretty annoying for the viewer! But it’s not the only one, we can also mention the way Raf handles the whole situation. Sulfus too but let’s start with Raf. Raf is supposed and presented as the one who thinks the most and who is more realistic on the situation but she’s also the one who lets the thing becoming difficult. She could have just said she wanted to forget him during that party. Instead, she voluntarily breaks Sulfus’s heart because of her own feelings. It’s actually the most egoistic move she’s made (before season 2). What is pretty terrible is how after this moment and the challenge with the VTT, she basically acts like there’s no problem or like Sulfus’s feelings have no interest or are not important. During the whole movie, she acts like she’s the victim while she’s the one causing problems in the first place. The realisation she has thanks to the “magical wind” and that FINALLY makes her honest is important because Sulfus could absolutely not understand her acts before. And the whole thing that pisses me off about Raf but it’s in every step of the show is the “angel’s you have to go protect your humans while I save the world” just like she had no human to protect but it’s there that the problem is. During this movie, Romain (his french name) makes bad choices and is a victim of the conflict between Raf and Sulfus which is SO annoying to watch because then he just becomes a dick with everyone. And Raf does NOTHING. That’s probably what annoys me the most about this conflict they created. It made both Raf and Sulfus completely out of reality.

I can say lots of things that Raf does bad but Sulfus is also a real dick in the movie. Of course he’s pissed off that she’s “seeing someone else” but he acts like she did something bad by - what he thought was - being honest to let him live his life. And he’s there accusing her of breaking his heart implying she should have let him think false things. He’s so selfish he makes the conflict go into the human sphere and absolutely doesn’t realize Kabalé is doing his job because he’s only focused on his relationship with Raf. I love their relationship and I just feel like the scene, where he realizes she let him be angry because she wanted to protect him then realizes how he made her suffer and how he acted like a dick and just starts crying because he feels remorse because he loves her so much plus Raf calling Sulfus “mon amour”, is one of the cutest they have in the series but it’s not enough for me. They both did terrible things to the other and it shows the real problem of their relationship that will stilk be there in season 2 but wasn’t in season 1. They really can’t trust each other. And it’s a real problem in a relationship. This problem, if it was only in season 2 with the whole manipulation thing surrounding them would have been logical and not problematic but with this being in the movie, it becomes a real issue. Which is part of why the movie kinda pisses me off. But they still have some nice moments and I just love the moments where they just stare at each other, saying nothing but their eyes say everything.

Sulfus is a bit older than his original version and - as you can read - he doesn't attend the stage on Earth like the others, but it's not unusual for eternals, in the comic universe, to study in other parts of the cosmos ahah

It wasn't actually easy to design his look at first, many elements in his original character are pretty iconic! For his angel version, I had in mind to design a more "soft" punk/rock style for him. Then I remembered this panel from comic #11 and... BOOM!! I found the solution!! 🔥

Now, I'm pretty satisfied with the results! ✨ I hope you like him too!

Listen, I was looking for something to doodle in between con prep, and I stumbled upon fanart of them on pinterest, and the doodles turned into a painting experiment which then got turned into stickers caus one of my friends wanted them. I'm still surprised at the amount of people that recognize them at conventions and I find funny how half of the people found the series one random day YEARS AGO because of their youtube recommendations (me included lol)

Kabalé's "feelings" for Sulfus

This movie made this girl dirty. She really deserved better tha to be portrayed as the girl so in love that it hurts to see her and her little voice when she talks about the person she loves. Mostly because it absolutely didn't feel like it was the case in season 1. She hated Raf, maybe had a little crush on Sulfus but not that joke we had in this movie.

Once again, I put "feelings" between "" because I feel like she wasn't really in love but jealous of what Raf and Sulfus had. She definitly wants to be loved and seeing two ennemies in love reminds her that... well Cabria and her weren't together back in the movie, because it's obvious they started to date in S2.

Kabalé deserved better and Sulfus being oblivious about her feelings is another joke when you see how he was sure of Raf's feelings in season 1. No they definitly deserved better character continuation. At least, season 2 is slightly better on this point.

But I really liked the idea of Romain/Kabalé. Not necessarily in a romantic way but their duo worked and she made him a funnier person even if she also made him quite cruel towards Julia but it's a point for another post!

Raf and Sulfus, Sulfus and Raf.

I finally finished my AF main cast redesigns for my rewrite project! I've had these two for a while, but I didn't want to post them until the rest of the gang was also ready for some reason. Anyways, here's my design notes for the main duo:

I wanted to treat this entire project the way I would if I'd been actually hired to reboot the IP as a professional. With this in mind, I kept the designs simple enough for serialized production while also doing my best to make them "fashionable" like the original material.

The comic's motifs for both characters made me decide on the moon and star as their core design elements early on. I simplified these shapes even further to their most basic form: angels will be represented by/associated with circles, and devils with triangles.

I designed Raf with a crescent moon in mind: she's very curvy but there's still some pointiness to her shapes. Sulfus was modelled after a 5-point star instead: all points, sharp angles and straight lines.

Since both the comics and series had Raf characterized as a go-getter (she's the leader and main character), I dressed her in some casual but sporty clothes to reflect this; I envisioned her as the "speedster" of the group, someone who's quick to jump into action once a goal or "finish line" is set. This Raf likes running and jogging as much as flying, so she sports (ha!) a nice tan as well.

Sulfus is the quintessential bad boy: he listens to heavy music, rides a motorbike, his snake mascot's resting mode looks like a tattoo, he surfs lava just for fun... I took his hobbies into account more than his previous emo/scene or classic rockstar looks from the series/comic, and came up with a healthy mix of functional speed biker fashion with melodic/power metal band influences.

Raf's main colors are blue, gold and white, a high contrast to the red, grey and black colors of Sulfus. Since Raf has a bright red spot in her design, it was only fair to give Sulfus gold eyes and blueish black and grey tones in turn.

Since Raf is more romantic and very sincere, her red ladybug (symbol of luck, new beginnings and love) is very bright and eye-catching, contrasted by Sulfus' soft, cool hues. His ring-necked snake (which is much more subtle than his original green rattlesnake/coral snake) represents Sulfus' more secretive side.

I'd go into more depth about their updated personalities and backstories, but this post is long as it is :V If any of you is interested in seeing more of this pair in action, here's my AFapril comic challenge thing.
