pjo takes that would have gottten me crucifed in 2014
okay, some of these probably aren't so bad but idk
rachel isn't that bad of a character. You guys just hated her because she "got in the way of percabeth
Octavian isn't that bad of a character. He was just really poorly written. If Rick gave him a sob story you guys would be falling at his knees.
Caleo sucks ass. The age gap is just rlly weird (not in a good way)

Part 2 of changes I would have made to Heros of Olympus.
Obligatory disclaimer: I do not think I am better than Rick Riordan and what he has created is amazing but that doesn't mean we should not criticise it and it's important to be able to step back and see the issues or missed potential of a piece of writing
There would be at least 1 year gap b/w the PJO and HOO and both Percy and Annabeth would be 17, making them significantly older than most of the cast who all (with the exception of Jason for reasons I will get into) would be 13-15. This means Percy and Annabeth would be mentoring them.
Also as a benefit of the gap I would love to see Nico and Percy's relationship be slightly better though that's just because I love them
Grover would take the place of Coach Hedge and help Percy and Annabeth with mentoring the others. Also he and Nico would talk about Bianca as he was in the quest with her and her friend. Grover would help Nico with accepting that Bianca's death was mainly the fault of Talos.
Jason would still be 16 along with Reyna and Octavian. The three would have been friends pre-HOO (I have a whole trilogy planned for them that I will Inshallah write in the summer) and Octavian would start dating Jason shortly before TLH. He would also assume that Reyna would have assassinated Jason for political reasons (credit to @percabeth4life for this entire arc idea)
Jiper would become canon shortly before Mark Of Athena in the months after The Lost Hero. Octavian would be extremely upset about this and this would probably cause issues.
Percy would be called Perseus among the Romans
Percy would help Octavian search for Jason and get all the water life and Pegasi to look for Jason which would bring the 2 close and create a point of tension between Percy and Jason as Percy would be upset on Octavian's behalf that Jason went and dated Piper without even breaking up with Octavian (BC he didn't remember their relationship at first)
Percy also wouldn't sleep for months and instead wake up at the owl house (it was supposed to be wolf house but it's funny so I'm'n keeping it) at the same time as Jason showed up on the bus and he would be Praetor for several months slowly regaining his memory
Instead of just remembering Annabeth, he would also remember Grover because of the empathy link
Nico and Hazel's relationship would receive more focus. In the Cupid Scene, Hazel is there instead of Jason and Cupid instead of out right outting would instead subtly hint at him to do so. He'd talk about queer ppl in the myths and how being gay is okay and how you should accept yourself and not hide it and make Nico promise to try before giving them the staff. Hazel would ask and Nico would admit his crush on Percy. While surprised (40s kid) she would accept him unconditionally because that's her brother
Frank would be 14 and they wouldn't get together until a few years after the books
Hazel and Frank would have more focus and would have interest they still took part in like Hazel still drawing (maybe doodling in the corners of pages during meetings)
Percy and Annabeth wouldn't be as interested in moving to CJ. Like yeah Annabeth would immediately use it as a reference for New Athens but Percy hates strict rules and CHB is both Percy and Annabeth's home. It's also close to where a majority of their support system (Sally, Paul, Chiron, Annabeth's siblings, Clarisse bc you pry her friendship with them out of my cold dead hands, e.t.c). Also Annabeth is v ambitious and seems like someone who would eventually want to go to a very prestigious university. Emphasis on eventually as I think both she and Percy would take a break from school to recover from their trauma and get in a better headspace for dealing with all that
Tartarus would be far worse but while Annabeth would freak out at the Akhlys thing, she certainly would understand why Percy did it and wouldn't make him promise not to use those powers again
Piper and Annabeth would not get along at first. Annabeth enjoys girlie things and was friends with Silena so Piper insulting the Aphrodite cabin and looking down on girls for being feminine would not fly with her. While I do think this would change as Piper accepts her femininity (see previous post ABT changes I would make to HOO) I think Annabeth would be closer to Hazel and be like an older sister to her
Also Hazel would have dark hair and dark eyes like a normal black girl. No exotic bs. Same with Piper.
Frank would have dyslexia too because I am living proof that Asians can have learning disabilities too.
These are all for now. Will probably add more

I feel like a big part of Heroes of Olympus was influenced by audience reaction.
I don’t think I’m grasping at straws here. I genuinely just don’t get why some decisions were made if this wasn’t the case.
The plot of the books themselves has always felt very muddled to me and that’s why it always feels like it’s supposed to be a story about characters and relationships, but it just kind of isn’t. Sure, on a surface level, yes, and we get some very lovely character dynamics, but it also feels slightly artificial in a way? The plot was built first and the characters thrown into it, but there wasn’t much thought given too how the characters should be with each other. Even the romantic ones.
Though I feel that I could tie this idea into pretty much every part of the books, there are two things that I personally think of the most while discussing this idea.
For one, there’s Octavian’s entire character.
I have always been confused as to what exactly Riordan wanted from Octavian. He really feels like a plot device most times, made solely for the purpose of stirring conflict between the Greeks and Romans. He as an individual never really mattered. Now, there are some very cool people on this website that have managed to squeeze a decent character out of the scenes we got, but with the way he was written, that in itself is a challenge, as post SoN, it feels like the only intent behind his character was to make him as unlikable as possible. He really was a real character in SoN, despite weird decisions here and there (The killing Gwen scene for example was purely to establish that the doors of death weren't working, and to make Octavian unlikable, but Octavian himself really didn’t have any motive for the killing. It benefitted him in no way.)
In SoN, Octavian is manipulative and well spoken, but after that, he is portrayed as some sort of dim witted idiot, clouded by his desire for personal glory.
The only way I can rationalize this shift in character is in the truly visceral reaction the then fanbase had to his character. They loathed him, taking not a second to rationalize his actions, but simply hate. It also made it so Octavian became the but of a lot of jokes. Those jokes characterizing him as his idiot and megalomaniac that it he shown as in Mark of Athena, House of Hades and Blood of Olympus.
I always suspected Octavian was supposed to serve some sort of grander purpose, or his role in HoO was supposed to be at least a little more dignified or dare I say sympathetic, but there really was no turning back with how hated he was, making Riordan embrace it rather than giving him actual human qualities.
Then on the other hand, there’s also Leo and his relationship with romance in general.
I’ve touched upon it in my Caleo essay (That I kind of wanna redo with more points and evidence to back up my claims, because I am unhappy with certain aspects but I still stand by all I said) that Leo is a character that was written in such a way that getting a romantic partner before resolving certain things would actively detriment the development of his character, including healing from his trauma. The way he was written was just not meant for romance and I will take this to my grave. I’m not saying there was no room for romance, but the way they went about it was... very bad. (A girlfriend will fix my problems. That is his mindset. But he doesn’t grow out of it. Instead he gets a girlfriend. A girlfriend that he treats as a fix to his problems when she is not. A girlfriend that is bad to and for him in so many ways.)
But it is very interesting to note, that especially after Mark of Athena, the speculations and demands for Leo’s future girlfriend went absolutely crazy. I can’t speak from experience but from the tweets from Riordan and fanarts from that time that I've seen it was at least to the point that he took active notice of it.
Besides Nico and Reyna, there weren’t really any other characters just lying around to pair Leo monogamously up with (I doubt Riordan be willing to make any characters besides Nico explicitly queer at the time and then in the next book he decided to pick up one of the background characters and said, you will do, when pairing Nico up with someone. )
There are many more examples I could go into. The universe suffered in many ways from this. Sure, it’s not the only problem that were detrimental. I believe Riordan had a plan from the beginning with all the main plot points of the series, but I feel he didn’t exactly know where he was going with the characters besides the basics. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the HoO characters. That is why I spend so much time talking and thinking about them, but the issues with the series and characters are so many that it’s borderline ridiculous.

Nico and Michael highlights from Blood of Olympus reading into the subtext
1. Nico was prepared to kill this motherfuckernif he had to. Nico had just been hired as Reyna’s attack dog and he is dedicated to that job 110%. Michael is taking none of his shit. Michael is wondering who this hades kid thinks he is. Both of them are not ones to start a fight but they’ll sure as hell finish one. It’s a Cold War. It’s extreme sexual tension 101.
Tumblr media
2. Nico thinks Michael’s sleep talking is adorable and hilarious. Nico could listen to him sleep talk all day. He wondered what it be like to lay in bed next to Michael and listen to him giggle manically and sleep talk nonsense. So adorable. Not that Nico would ever admit that. Not even in the subtext.
Tumblr media
3. (Now this line is about Dakota and Leila but I’m going to assume that if Michael had spent any amount of time with Nico then he would act about the same way. Nico finds this equally amusing and empowering as he is half Michael’s size.
Tumblr media
4. Nico and Michael eye fucking once again. Octavian and Will cockblocking them. Will trying to argue with Nico. Nico and Michael totally down for murder (especially with someone like Octavian) and Will being his usual goody two shoes self and trying to insert himself into a situation he has nothing to do with and doesn’t know anything about.
Tumblr media
5. Michael obliges to play the loyal guard dog act one last time. He stands directly in front of Nico (and Will. Let’s pretend like he’s not here). Michael and Nico starring each other down. Probably more eye fucking and silent flirting. Extreme tension. Will watches on in absolute horror as these two psychopaths flirt all they have over the guy they’re about to murder.
Tumblr media
6. Oh no Michael only glared at Will because he was being annoying and interfering with business that had nothing to do with him. Michael looked at Nico and tried to convey the thoughts “hey I see we’re the same type of crazy and think alike. Follow me into the tent and we’ll make a stronger bond than just silent flirting” but Nico is so dense and sees himself in a totally undesirable light and he doesn’t understand Michael is asking him to follow him so Nico is just thinking “welp good riddance Octavian. Great now I can flirt with Michael more—wait no Michael don’t go please dont leave me here with the like of Will Solace I can’t take him he’s so annoying please stay with me Michael”
Tumblr media
And then Nico and Michael never interact again and I think that is a crime. Rick forced Solangelo together when in reality Nico thought Will was the most annoying personality he’d ever met aside from Octavian and Bryce and Nico and Michael were checking each other out and eye fucking and silent flirting every single time the looked at each other. Michael and Nico should have been endgame. (Also what is Nico and Michael’s ship name? Does anybody know? Do they even have a ship name?).

I think my biggest problem with RR is that I love the idea he has but not the execution.
Like, nice ADHD guy who uses humor as a coping mechanism. Nice, war between Greeks and Romans. Nice, Poseidon and Athena children couple. Nice, gender fluid badass character. Nice,
Then you realize the ADHD guy doesn't get much deeper than that. That, the war was caused by some flat ass character with no personality aside from killing panda plushies and superiority complex. That the A and P's relationship was kinda forced and toxic. That the said badass character is only gender fluid bc of her mom.

Seeing the bigoted discourse around HotD as an Indigenous woman from an interracial extended family, one full of 'illegitimate' circumstances of births that the Canadian government has always been SO eager to weaponize, and especially as the daughter of a 60s scoop survivor who found his way back to his birth family which means we navigate belonging to two families, of two different races, in two different ways... it's actually hurtful and a little scary to see all the vitriol levelled against fictional 'illegitimate' children by a MODERN audience.
This is a weird example but it's also the most famous. You know that saying about how you shouldn't insult Trump for his body because he'll never hear or be hurt by it, but the people around you who might share those traits will? How when you insult a powerful or abstract figure in a really low way, that insult is not just for them?
Well, when you express bigotry over fictional characters, obviously said fictional character isn't going to receive it. But real people who share those traits will.
I swear, I know I'm basically setting myself up for a never ending 'to write' list at the moment, but I do intend to someday dive into the subject and SHAME the bigots.
#hotd critical#hotd fandom#asoiaf fandom#ffs even in 'western' culture adoption goes back thousands of years#it's literally how Caesar passed his power to Octavian#And how Matilda's son claimed the throne#not only was adoption a thing in MATILDA'S time but so was weaponizing how easy it is to dispute 'legitimacy' of birth#You know MATILDA? I think Octavian is the only character is the series who causes the same impression on everyone. Which is crazy. How are there no different opinions about him? Even Nico who became Creepy in hoo had moments where people got different impressions about him.

probably the thing I miss the most from the ancient world (greece specifically) is that people were allowed to have flaws, even, and at some times especially, the gods
look at percy jackson (the series): the main character's fatal flaws are stuff like loyalty, hubris, grudge holding, and the inability to be selfish - while holding dire potential, none of these are flaws that would ruin someone's day or make a person outright objectionable; those flaws are saved for the villains/antiheroes: excessive wrath, the need to be better than everyone (this is different than hubris - hubris is the feeling, this is more the action), the need to attain a goal at any cost
and this aligns a lot with the modern view of how people should act: we can make mistakes as long as they're hidden and they don't happen again, but really we should just avoid making mistakes and try to be a person the most people would like
but in ancient greece: the great heroes had some pretty bad fatal flaws that by modern standards would get them a lot of hate: major anger management issues, impulsiveness so bad it harmed others many times, hubris that far exceeded annabeth's (and that's another point), excessive pride (again, different from hubris, and the extent was far worse than any pjo characters), and anxiety (which is coming to be tolerated in the modern world, but back then was just a flaw for a hero)
while a lot of these are very close or even match those of the pjo characters, the ancient heroes were able to let their flaws get much farther than any pjo character. the ancient world saw character flaws as a problem, yes, but they also saw them as unavoidable and just something that needed to be controlled whereas the modern world sees character flaws as personal failures
and we do this so much with public and religious figures: the second we see something we don't like from those we already don't like, we attack, but we're so quick to defend those we do like even when their mistakes go beyond mistakes and start becoming actual problems that need to be addressed (cough gop cough) - and again, we do this with everyone: politicians, the religious people we believe in, celebrities, our friends, etc - when what we really should be doing is acknowledging that no one is perfect and perfection is an impossible, unattainable burden
and i cite the gods because the ancient greek gods messed up so damn much, and the greeks didn't deny that. that's why there were so many gods, so that the different ones could pick up slack. but now, people act like they have to hold themselves to the same standards as the monotheistic gods we have now that are often seen as perfect. (I won't get into this because it seems disrespectful to me but the main idea is that we're not gods, so even if you view your religious figures as flawless, you don't have to be)
sometimes this modern view is a good thing such as in the case of morals and ethics or when people need to be held accountable for their actions, but too often this new perspective just puts unnecessary stress on people already doing their best, and it opens up opportunities for the people who are actually problematic to makes others feel like shit, plus it pushes the idea that everyone should be the same when people use this view to push their agenda
besides, part of the point of allowing people to have fatal flaws is that they have people around them that will help them control their flaws so they don't get out of hand. we see in the case of theseus when he was with his parents or ariadne until he was with pirithous, a horrible influence, and percy and annabeth, who each remind each other when they're being too prideful or letting their loyalty get the best of them, and nico and will when will reminds nico to let bygones be bygones.
anyway all this to say, take care of yourself. you don't need to be perfect. you don't even need to always do your best, and it's ok to make mistakes. the things you see as personal flaws are what make you spicy.
*the characters for the listed fatal flaws are tagged in order if you weren't sure which person I meant

Controversial opinion that may make me a pariah, but F*** the ides of march! F*** them! Hail Caesar! I don't care if he's a bad person, nobody deserves to be turned into a stupid joke! You're all awful for this tradition, and I will not apologize for that. I will respect your right to celebrate it, but I hate it! And since I patently refuse to filter tags (because I know my morbid curiosity will make me look at everything anyway), you all have to listen to my anger lecture!
F*** this stupid holiday! And also F*** April Fool's Day! And F*** Halloween! Some of the worst holidays, right here! Screw them all! Screw them all!!!

OH RIGHT MOST PJO FANS AREN'T OLD AS FUCK INTO THE FANDOM LIKE ME So the reason you always see me using graphic novel panels for my posts instead official art even though it's not only easier access but the GNs are also obscure even to Pjo fans is that Viria's is very questionable at best-It has book accuracies but unfortunately this also includes Rick's racist designs like Piper's feathers and book unaccuracies like whitewashing Hazel and Sadie and thinifying Frank(can provide evidence for all these if asked)and not to get into ship discourse but she also still ships Percy/Nico in spite of Percy being an adult and Nico a minor(18 and 15)so i encourage everyone else to use the graphic novels art instead too and all Pjo ones can be found on readcomicsonline for free but sadly i don't know any sites that have TLH,SON and MOA in full instead of the just beginner bits. This is info i wanted to share as a black queer person and i deeply don't care about anything defending her,the GNs are way prettier anyway👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
