𓃶 What Is The Wild Hunt?
The Wild Hunt is a common belief among many Northern European cultures. In short, the hunt is a cavalcade of ghosts, spirits, fairies, elves, and other spiritual beings that is said to sweep across our world every year. Depending on where your beliefs come from, when it happens will differ.
It is commonly believed that the leader of The Wild Hunt is a deity or figure of importance of some kind, such as Odin/Woden in Norse and Saxon traditions, or King Arthur in British lore. Other leaders of the hunt include but are not limited to:
𖤓 Arawn or Gwyn ap Nudd, commonly seen as the Welsh lords of Annwn
𖤓 Danish king Valdemar Atterdag
𖤓 The Norse dragon slayer Sigurd
𖤓 Biblical figures like Cain, Gabriel, Herod and the devil
𖤓 Gothic king Theodoric the Great

𓃶 What Did People Do For The Wild Hunt?
The Wild Hunt was generally seen as a bad omen; one for destruction, famine, war, plague, or the death of the one who saw it. In many traditions, witnessing the hunt would result in the viewer being abducted to Otherworld or Underworld. Other times, those who were not protected would have their souls pulled from their bodies while they sleep, and they would join the menagerie of the dead.
To avoid this fate, people in Wales, for example, began the tradition of carving pumpkins as a way to avoid being taken by the fae. In Scandinavia, offerings like bread were put outside the home as an offering to the spirits joining Odin for the hunt.

𓃶 When is The Wild Hunt?
Depending on where your beliefs stem from, there are various answers to this question.
In Britain, The Wild Hunt is associated with the autumn season, specifically around and on Samhain/The Autumn Equinox.
Scandinavian tradition tells us that they prepared for the hunt around December, specifically Yule/The Winter Equinox.

𓃶 What Entities Are A Part of the Wild Hunt?
Many entities are associated with the Wild Hunt in different areas. These entities include but are not limited to:
𖤓 The Fae (The Sidhe, The Tlywyth Teg, etc)
𖤓 Spirits of the Dead
𖤓 Demons
𖤓 Valkyries
𖤓 The Spirits of Huntsmen or Nobles
𖤓 Horses (sometimes with an abnormal amount of legs)
𖤓 Wolves and dogs (sometimes spiritual in nature, i.e. the Cwn Annwn)

My gods with me:
Nyx: I swear you and your boyfriend share the same sleep schedule, and I WATCH OVER BOTH OF YOU!! WHY CANT YOU BOTH HAVE A DECENT SLEEP SCHEDULE.
Sobek: drink more water, take care of your body and health.
Morrigan: Time to practice some divination. Perhaps your friend can also use a spell bottle.
Arawn: ...I'm going to pet your dog, and I'll be on my way. Also, don't forget to upkeep your wards. Go out sometime. You both need the sunlight.
Ereshkigal: Don't forget to grieve properly for those you lost. They are always there no matter what.
Kali: Stop tiptoeing and start doing Shadowwork. You can't ignore it.
Mictlantecuhtli: honor and remember your ancestors. Know your mother is beside you.
Loki: Don't forget to start some chaos while you are it. *chuckles* You've survived worse child, don't forget you're unbreakable and nothing can hold you back.

Arwen is a Macrotermes exterminator. Although most Megalotis farm these little bugs to use in different dishes, sometimes they can get out of control or pop up in places they aren't welcome, and that's where Arwen comes in. He will take out all the workers and the queen for a small fee, looking like he is having a blast as he does so. If you want a tale-telling, half-eared, and slightly crazed Megalotis to take out your bug problem, then he is your Vulpes.

Arawn is an NPC from the Animalia TTRPG i'm writing. He also can be used as a playable character
(hum, will have to figure out how to make Tumblr not compress the heck out of images)

The Horned King Villain Backstory
I'm taking some liberties with the set up here as the movie-verse is noticeably different from Lloyd Alexander's novels in several big ways, so I'm trying to give homage to the novels while still building off of the different set up of the Black Cauldron movie
There's gonna be some backstory build up stuff for Eilonwy here too
The Horned King was originally a mortal man named Cern, a great servant of the Arawn Death Lord, a Demon who laid waste to the land of Prydain in ancient times
When he pledged himself to serve Arawn he was given some of the secrets of Dark Magic, with which he started the process of becoming a demon lord himself, growing the horns he became famous for
When Arawn was defeated by the old High King Gwydion--his mortal form boiled away and his spirit bound into the Black Cauldron-- Cern suffered terribly upon his master's physical demise and binding, causing him to almost die himself, but his power was great enough he clung to life in skeletal lich form, escaping into the dark corners of Prydain where he began to build up his magic and might once more in a slow return to power
Eventually he gained enough power both magically and physically to send the country of Prydain into war once more years later, driving the local Fairy Folk underground and taking over even the ancient castle where his old foe High King Gwydion was buried, making it his seat of power.
He stole Princess Eilonwy as he knew she was the last descendent of Gwydion, and that she possessed magic (which appeared to her outwardly in the form of her Bauble, as she was still learning to control it) which could lead him to discover where Gwydion had hidden the Black Cauldron (not knowing it had long ago fallen into the hands of the Witches of Morva, who kept it hidden from his sight with their magic)
When Eilonwy's bauble refused to cooperate (a result of her own internal desire not to aid him in anyway) he would have killed her, but she managed to escape into the old hidden tunnels with the help of her Bauble/inner magic, which also helped shield her from his efforts to find her until she met up with Taran.
It was Eilonwy's ancestral link to Gwydion that caused her magic to lead them to Gwydion's hidden tomb, where Taran discovered the sword Dyrnwyn, a sword which could only be given, never taken, which is the Horned King never tried to take it for himself, content to let it rot away with its owner. But Dyrnwyn/Gwydion's spirit recognized the inherent worthiness in Taran (would have worked for Eilonwy too if she'd taken the sword herself) and allowed him to take it from Gwydion's tomb.
He sought for the Cauldron as he knew it contained the last vestiges of Arawn's powers, which included powers over Death itself. With it under his control not only could he create an unkillable army to sweep the land with, but he could also complete his transformation into a true Demon Lord, ascending from his half-dead existence to become a god among men.
But ultimately he was still bound to Awarn through his ancient oaths, and when he failed to provide a new sacrifice to slack the Cauldron it called upon those oaths and pulled him in to suffer his master's demise as well

Faebruary/Februfairy 2024: "Changeling"
Author's notes: Let's see if I can organize my worldbuilding notes.
A changeling is a human who has also become a fairy, or a fairy who has also become a human. They are, in a sense, both, and potentially have the advantages of each race: the magical power and immortality of a fairy, but a human's ability to lie, resistance to iron, etc.
The most common and famous way to make changelings is by taking a newborn human and leaving a fairy in its place, generally glamoured to keep the parents from noticing. The process is finalized when both candidates have been a.) named and b.) accepted by their new species. This generally isn't very difficult, since the fairies do it to their new child ("the Taken") as a matter of course, while the humans believe that their charge ("the Exchanged") is their own child. A parent greeting their new fairy child with "Good morning, Jeremy! Mommy's here" has already fulfilled both conditions.
Technically, neither candidate needs to be an infant, nor does a switch need to be made.
Human sorcerers can also become changelings through magical means, giving themselves significantly more power in the process. However, this is very complicated and likely to go wrong. It may no longer be possible to achieve in the human world, given how much magic has waned over the centuries.
Arawn knows a particular trick to exchange places with a human on a temporary basis, making them each a changeling for a limited time.
