After the events of Civil War, Steve and Buck get their pardons and defect from the Avengers, deciding to just live their lives and leave the saving of the world to someone else. They take classes at the local community college and fall into a love of different art forms.
Bucky falls in love with the visual arts. The recreation of the human form on canvas through different mediums triggering something deep in his cerebellum, unlocking a passionate side of him that he didn't know existed.
Steve, who was never much of an artist, falls in love with written word, falls in love with sentence structure and word choice and cadence and rhythm, falls in love so hard that it leaks out of his fingers and he starts to write his own prose.

thinking of artbuff!bucky today😌
Tumblr media
artbuff!bucky drabble? artbuff!bucky drabble.
artwork included at the end.
he still doesn't exactly know how he convinced you to get coffee with him after you walked the entirety of museum together, but there you are throwing smiles his direction over your latte making his heart tap out some rhythms he doesn't remember having felt before.
"okay okay, so what about like- sculptures?" you ask, having taken the last couple hours only really talking about paintings.
"still the baroque period, all the way."
"you really are a fanboy," you said, crossing your arms over your chest in disbelief and leaning back in your chair.
"hey now, there's no need to call me names," he raises his hands in front of his chest defensively.
there's a pickup line about just calling him in general that you can't put together through the sunbeam of his smile and your brain defaults back to questions about art.
"alright, do you have a favorite baroque sculpture?"
he tugs his lower lip into his mouth, wrinkling his nose in concentration, trying to think of a good answer.
you watch the lightbulb light up above his head when it comes to him, holding up a metal finger while he speaks.
"veiled woman, antonio corradini"
"corradini?! i thought you'd have better taste!" you slap your hands down on the table, leaning over the table towards him.
he leans back in kind, the wound of your incredulousness covered with a hand over his heart.
"what do you mean?! that sculpture is incredible. you know it's marble right? like actual rock? and it looks like fabric!"
"you make it sound like the only thing you know is the baroque period--"
bucky hadn't heard you, trailed off in his own thoughts while his eyes glazed over
corradini's veiled woman is gorgeous, not only to the side of bucky that valued art, but to the side of him that valued the human form and it's depictions. the contrast of hard marble made to look like butter soft sheet over naked flesh flashes images through his brain of you looking much the same.
you have to snap in front of his face a couple times before he comes back down to earth, but when he does his cheeks flush deep red.
"earth to nerd-" you tease, watching him rub the back of his neck at his embarassment.
"i thought we were over calling me names, you're gonna hurt a guy's feelings," he shoots back, a grin pulling at the corner of his mouth.
"what about a consolation dinner? would that make a guy feel better?"
he looks directly into your eyes then, grin turning to full solar beam as he pushes an errant lock of hair behind his ear.
"i don't know, sweetheart. i guess we'll have to find out."
veiled woman, antonio corradini 1752
(and before any of you art nerds come at me, i know it's from the rococo period.)

please gimme thoughts on artcollector!bucky because that just sounds so intriguing
HOOOO BOY-
sometimes my brain does a blast and I just pair concept with character—
so artbuff!bucky barnes, right?
here's a drabble about it
Tumblr media
the first time you ever met him, he had his arms crossed over his chest and he was glaring up at a piece from the renaissance. his boots set wide and his hat nearly concealing his raised brow.
"you don't like it?" you asked, taking your own tour through the museum had brought you into the same room with him.
"you mean the bible fan art? not really my thing." the comparison had your laughter trilling through the echoing halls.
"okay, okay," you replied, trying to stifle your giggles with your hand, "then what's your favorite?"
he turned his full body to you then, and considered changing his answer the moment he saw you, his appraising eyes taking in the contrast of your cheekbones against the lighting.
"uhm, the baroque period."
your own eyebrow quirked, mulling over his answer with the contrast of his henley and blue jeans. “the baroque pieces are that way, i’d love a walking partner.”
he returns a slow nod. he’s reserved, but not completely opposed to company, especially if that company looks like you and can keep up with his love for art.
“do you have a favorite artist?” he asks, staying in stride with you while your footsteps echo through the museum.
“i don’t. not yet anyway, do you?”
“i do- Domenico Fetti.”
“the baroque period makes sense now.”
“does it?” you can hear the flirtation in his voice and look over to see the way his nose wrinkles playfully.
“fetti was what- early seventeenth century?” you chew on the inside of your lip when he launches into the short biography.
“late sixteenth, early seventeenth. italian. his father was a painter. only lived to about 33.”
“short life-“ you mused.
“yeah- seems like he saw a lot of it though.”
you thought back on all of his pieces, how well they captured the human experience, and finally you nod, "seems that way with most artists though, doesn't it?"
"oh no way. there's a couple that i think lived way too long."
your barely concealed giggles bounced off the marble flooring of the exhibit room.
bucky felt the warmth spread from his chest to his face when your laughter invaded his senses. he pulls his hand out of his pocket and holds it out to shake yours, introducing himself.
he appreciates that you don't hesitate or shrink back when you feel the metal, and even more when don't immediately dismiss yourself, but you've always loved a good work of art.
his comment about living a lot of life in 33 years makes more sense when you're formally introduced. his fascination with the baroque period does too. it's mostly portraits, most of them of people doing seemingly mundane things. but the baroque period was a testament to finding joy in small moments.
the baroque period seemed to remind artists of the slow and peaceful and scream there's beauty here too
bucky's current favorite piece is called "Young Girl Sleeping"
but who knows, opinions always change, and you look like you'd be beautiful on canvas.

⭐️directors commentary on artbuff!bucky⭐️
he is a completely selfish au idea -
i personally really like baroque artwork, i know enough about it to make conversation, i love the contrast in color and the subject, and then i thought about having a conversation with him about it.
i thought about what it would be like to sit in a coffee shop and make fun of painters and how pretentious they can be and it just-
it made me happy- so i wanted him to make you guys happy too.
send me a ⭐️ and i’ll give you my directors commentary on my work
