Rainy Love
Tumblr media
(GIF NOT MINE)
Pairing: Spencer reid x Male reader
description: y/n has always loved the rain, and decides to share that love with spencer (ps this was idea was inspired by a fic by the lovely user @ssa-atlas-alvez <;3)
Content warnings: possible swearing (lemme know if theres anything else :))
flufftober day 2: love confession
Tumblr media
It was a rainy day at the BAU. A very rainy day. The team members each sat at their own desk, quietly working away. But y/n, he was distracted- he had long since abandoned his paperwork for staring out the tall rectangular windows, longing to be feeling the effects of the rain pouring down on him. Every once in a while he would close his eyes and imagine the feeling of the cool raindrops pelting his skin.
Spencer, whose desk was closest to y/ns, was the first to notice y/n’s distracted state. Spencer decided to take the opportunity to talk to the man he had loved for years, but never told.
“Hey y/n, whats got you so distracted? are you okay?” there was that small knit between spencers brows that he always got when he was worried, which was a lot. Y/n thought this to himself, often being the one who noticed things like that about spencer. But y/n wouldn’t help himself, he was in love and it was involuntary.
Y/n’s attention was pulled away from the pattering rain outside by spencers question. “oh- y’a im fine spence, i was just distracted by the rain.” When y/n talks of the rain theres a fondness in his voice like that of someone talking about an old friend. “You know- i wish i could be out there right now. Id love to feel the rain on my skin.” very time y/n tries to put his attention back on spencer, hes drawn back to the window. Spencer notices y/ns fondness of the rain and decides to take advantage of the cluelessness of those around him and says to y/n with a mischievous smile “let’s go!” and offers up his hand to y/n, his palm open waiting for y/ns. Y/n looks at spencer confused for a moment and spencer elaborates; “out there!” with an excited gesture towards the rain pattering against the window, and then continues; “You obviously wanna go out there, no ones looking and i finished my paperwork 20 minutes ago!” Spencer gives up on waiting for y/n and just takes his hand pulling him up, out of his seat, and towards the big glass doors.
When the pair finally reach the front doors, y/n is the one to push them open. Having long since abandoned the idea of actually getting any work done for the rest of the day. Y/n pulls spencer by the arm out into the rain- and as y/n spread his arms out and loaded up with his eyes closed, quiet literally soaking in the rain. He found himself staring intently at Y/n, admiring everything about the man he’d come to love. Admiring the way the rain soaked his eyelashes, and the H/C hair that stuck to his forehead.
finally y/n opened his eyes again, only to find spencer staring at him. Spencer noticed Y/ns awareness of him and his cheeks went red. he looked down and y/n said “what you staring at goofball?” (y/n had almost immediately taken to calling spencer goofball when they met, and spencer never corrected him). Spencer felt a surge of reckless confidence surge through him and said “you.” without thinking. spencer, being the man he is- almost immediately regretted this action.but what took him by surprise was when y/n took spencers chin softly and pushed it up with his fingertips. In that moment the two made intense eye contact.
“ I love you y/n- i cant help myself..”
spencer trailed off at first but when y/n didnt respond he started nervously rambling. But Y/n was still processing the fact that the man he had loved for years, but never even considered the fact that he might love him back- was telling y/n that he loved him. When y/n could finally speak again he said;
“Stop.”
with a gentle sternness to his voice. And spencer stopped what he was saying and looked up at y/n desperately hoping that’s he hadn’t ruined the relationship with his best friend. But instead of yelling or screaming or telling spencer to never talk to him again, he simply said;
“I love you too goofball.”
and there they stood together, drenched to the bone, forehead to forehead. hands on each-other’s others hips.
The End

I have recently encountered this post here suggesting a quite interesting story idea for a Zuko x firenbender!reader fic. I initially tried to contact the owner of the post via pm but I haven’t received any reply yet and I am kind of worried someone else will make a move if I wait any longer.
I am so hyped to write this but I need to ask the general audience some questions. Maybe while we work this out, the owner of the post will see us and help me clarify this stuff as well ^.^
I personally find that I write OCs much better than the reader themselves, the freedom of an OC allows me to dive into the different dimensions of the character much more! But if the main hype is for firebender!reader, then I won’t object of course (:
PS: to get an idea about what my writing is like, you can check out the first chapter of Tame the Dragon (for x reader) or you can check out this stand-alone piece here (for x oc) or the first chapter of this little Valtor x OC series (tho the second chapter captures my OC writing better).
[At this point I realised I can only add one poll dammit]
Second Question: Do you want smut or not?
This is a complicated one since the characters in ATLA are all minors. The reader/oc is going to be the same age as Zuko (16) and I personally did a lot more than making out at that age [for the record, my partners have all been my age as well during that time, and we gave a clear yes each time so my experiences were healthy and based on mutual consent]. So I wouldn't mind including more than kissing from time to time but I can totally understand if the majority would be uncomfortable with characters being 16 and going into +18 territory.
I think that is all I want to ask for now, I cannot wait to start working on this fic!
I am tagging everyone from the original post who wanted to be tagged in case someone started working on the suggested idea, if you don't want to be tagged in the future please kindly let me now via comment or pm!

Tumblr media
Zuko x Plus size!reader
Word Count: 1170 words
Warnings: none
Summary: Taking Zuko and Iroh in when they’re made fugitives
Part 2
——————————————————————————————————
It wasn’t everyday that you came across two strangers in the woods while on your daily walk, but today wasn’t just a normal day. Apparently, you were just in the right place at the right time.
“What are you two doing out here?” you called, ducking out from behind a tree with a big grin on your face.
Your father had always said you were too friendly, but in times like this, being friendly was the only thing that you had. After all, it wasn’t like your father was around anyway.
Strangers were just friends you’d yet to meet, and you had to believe that, now more than ever.
“What? Nothing. We’re no one, we’re not doing anything” the younger of the two rambled, looking as if he’d seen some kind of monster at your arrival.
You had startled him, but you didn’t care.
“I didn’t accuse you of anything. I just asked you a question” you assured, holding your hands up in defense. You didn’t do anything wrong, at least as far as you were concerned.
Luckily, before he could panic that much more, the older gentleman smiled. “We’re travelers, just passing through” he informed, doing his best to let you know you hadn’t offended them.
After all, they didn’t have much room to be rude to anyone while running from certain death or imprisonment. Zuko had yet to learn that, apparently.
“I see. Well, you seem like nice people. How about I make you some hot dinner and get you out of this heat for a while?” you offered, not wanting to leave them in the woods like this.
As best you could tell, they were probably refugees running from the fire nation and you didn’t want to leave them here alone.
“No, we’re fine” the first spoke again, refusing you in a way that you couldn't say surprised you. You had only been talking to him for a few moments but you already could tell he wasn’t super friendly.
Not that you could blame him.
People were always rather guarded, especially in this war torn world. At his age, he had probably been raised with that distrust, just like you had.
“Are you sure? I have all sorts of tea and as much roast duck as you could ever want” you hummed, dangling the offer of a warm dinner in front of them like bait.
You had to do something to get them out of here and something told you that they hadn’t had a hot meal in quite some time.
“That sounds excellent, thank you” Again, the older of them smiled.
“Wonderful. Now, what are your names?”
~
“That is quite the scar? What happened?” you wondered, turning your attention to Lee. Maybe it wasn’t the sort of thing you should have asked right away, but you couldn’t help yourself.
It was just something you had to ask, before the not knowing drove you crazy.
“None of your business”
Feeding them had done nothing to ease the strain that Lee felt within himself, obviously. He had something going on, something that you just couldn’t ignore.
“That’s fair I guess, but could you please tell me something? What are you running from?” you wondered, knowing it could be a number of things.
Personally, you were running from the very obvious murder and imprisonment that had faced your people at the hands of the fire nation...but something told you it wasn’t so simple with these two.
There were a thousand stories behind their eyes.
You just wished they would share something about themselves with you.
“It isn’t what we’re running from, so much as what we’re going toward, young one” Mushi started, joining you now with a big bowl of duck and that same grin you’d grown to enjoy.
That was one way to look at it.
“I’m sure it’ll be much better where you’re headed, away from the fire nation I’d hope” you shrugged, wishing you were at a luxury to do the same.
Unfortunately though, you were likely never going to get out of this town. Not that there was anywhere to go that you would actually be safe.
“There is nowhere away from the fire nation” Lee bellowed now, shocking you with his sudden outburst. He hadn’t said more than a few words here and there for the past few hours, but he was being rather vocal now.
It was kind of refreshing.
...And depressing.
“I don’t think that’s true. There was a time before the war, and there will be a time after” you decided, reaching out to take Mushi’s hand casually.
“You believe that, don’t you?” you asked him, knowing that if anyone was going to have your back on this, it was him. Lee wasn’t all that enthusiastic about anything, so he probably thought the world was doomed.
All he did was nod.
It had been quite some time since Iroh had seen a young person with so much optimism within them and it warmed his heart to see it. You had such a refreshing way of thinking.
If only Zuko could learn something from you.
“Now, where are you two headed when the sun comes up?” you wondered, knowing that everyone was headed somewhere. If there was one thing you’d learned from living in such a travel port, it was that everyone was always coming or going.
You were the only thing that ever seemed to stay the same.
“No idea. What about you? Any travel plans?” Mushi asked, making small talk to fill in the space. Small talk that would continue until much later in that evening when the older man turned in for the night.
You enjoyed the time that you’d spent with him, but now that it was just you and Lee, you found yourself glad for the privacy.
Maybe now you could understand why he was the way he was.
“It never used to be this quiet” you started, sitting down beside him on the porch. He had excused himself during dinner to be alone, but now that there was no one else to occupy your attention, it was his turn.
Lee said nothing in regards to you, but you didn’t let it bother you. If he didn’t want to talk to you, you weren’t going to make him.
...But, nothing stopped you from talking.
“Until recently, this was a fire nation base. I grew up surrounded by soldiers, and you know something?” you hummed, your voice casual, though Zuko should have known there was more beneath it.
You wore your emotions on your sleeve, and even Zuko could pick up on the way you were feeling. There was something serious coming, but he wasn’t sure what it was.
Luckily, he didn’t have to wait long.
“What?”
Zuko decided to speak finally, shocking you that he would address you directly. Not that you let it distract you too much from what you’d noticed in the time since you’d picked them up.
“You carry yourself like a firebender”

Zuko’s Story
Summary: Y/n is a fan of tea, but she's an even bigger fan of the cute boy who sells it at the Jasmine Dragon. Prompts: 1. “I think I’m falling in love with you, and it scares me.” 4. “I’ve always been in love with you, since the beginning.” 11. “You look beautiful.” 23. "I really like having you around." Fandom: ATLA Pairing: Zuko x reader Warnings: none A/N: This is for @fromthewatertribe‘s 1k event! This was an idea I had before but saw your prompts and knew it would fit perfectly!
I slowly sipped on my tea, eyeing the cute server. I had been gawking at him for who knows how long, but I knew he wouldn't notice. He never noticed.
I knew his name was Lee by hearing it around the shop. I had been coming every single day for the past three weeks during my little brother Cam's bending lessons. I wasn't a bender, but he was, and I was determined for him to learn. Ever since our father had been taken away for bending when the fire nation raided our village, I knew he had to learn. I ran away with him the day I learned he could bend, refusing to let them take him too. As a result, we ended up as refugees in the last safe place there was, Ba Sing Se. And, even though money was so unbearably tight, I insisted that he go to regular lessons to learn how to bend. I was not going to let his talent be wasted.
"Would you like more tea?" I was startled out of my thoughts my a low voice beside me. I looked up quickly and had to fight back a blush. Of course it was Lee.
"No thanks, handsome," I blatantly flirted with him like usual and pressed a coin into his palm. He blinked a couple times before closing his hand around the coin. I got up and left him at the table, exiting the shop. It was about time I picked up Cam anyways.
I began to walk in the general direction of Cam's lessons. I didn't make it far, though. After a few minutes of walking, I was roughly pulled into an alley. I tried to scream, but a hand muffled my attempts. I twisted and thrashed, but my assailant had caught me well off guard so there was not much I could do to free myself. So, I stopped trying to free myself. I decided to wait until I saw an opening and take it. I had a whole plan in motion but it was shattered when I saw who had grabbed me.
"Lee?" I mumbled through his hand. I scrunched my eyebrows together and relaxed in his hold. It was only then that I processed how close we were. He had my wrists clasped behind my back, the rest of his arm pressing his body to mine. He was half a head taller then me, so he was looming over me.
"How to you know my name?" He rasped angrily. He lowered his hand from my mouth, which I appreciated, but when he brought it back he was holding a knife. I guess I preferred being muffled. He held the blade to my throat as a threat.
Well, I guess he finally noticed my staring.
"I heard it around the shop," I answered truthfully. To be honest, I was scared out of my mind. But, I was also a little bit turned on. This guy was really hot and the tough guy act sure wasn't helping my heartbeat. He was a lot cuter up close, I thought, then cursed at myself. That's what I was thinking about when I had a knife to my throat? However, for some reason, I didn't feel like he would hurt me. Be it the result of my crush or intuition, I just couldn't bring myself to be scared.
"Why do you stare at me all the time? What do you know? Do you know who I am?" He paused for a millisecond. "Answer me!" He shouted.
I opened and closed my mouth, I was sure I looked like a koi. "I, uh, don't know how to answer that," I replied carefully. "But I have no idea who you are or anything else pertaining to you for that matter."
"Then why are you always in the shop? And why do you always stare at me?" He asked the same question again and I knew I would have to give him a response. He wasn't going to let this one go.
"I like tea?" I said meekly. He gave me a hard stare in response. I sighed in defeat and slumped a little bit. I broke eye contact and looked off to the side to make sure no one was coming. It would be hard for Lee to explain his way out of that one. "Can you let me go at least?" I finally sighed. "I am not going to hurt you, you are the one with the knife."
Lee frowned but nodded and let me go. I shook out my arms, slightly numb from the awkward angle, and sighed in relief.
"Now tell me," Lee began, raising his knife to my throat again. "What business do you have with me?"
I rolled my eyes and pushed the knife away, no longer really scared. If Lee was a bad guy, he never would have let me go. "None? Listen if you want the truth, here it is. I think you're cute so I like going to the shop and watching you work. Nothing malicious."
"Oh," he said softly, lowering his knife.
"I am really sorry for staring at you all the time, I'll stop coming if that's what you want-well of course it's what you want of course you don't want some freak staring-"
"No." Thankfully, Lee cut off my rambling. "I, uh, well... I don't mind, well it's not that I don't mind but I really like having you around the shop."
"Oh," I breathed, a flush rising to my cheeks.
"Yeah," he muttered quietly and looked away. He reached up and rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly and quickly added, "You bring the tea shop a lot of business!"
"Oh," I said again, this time less excited. "Yeah I guess so," I muttered dejectedly.
"Well that's not it," Lee quickly followed up. "I mean I like your presence in the tea shop, you're really nice and tip well and ugh that's not what I mean I am just going to stop talking."
"I think that would be for the best," I chuckled. Then I looked at him again. He was so unbearably cute and I was sure I would never get another opportunity like this again, so I decided to go for it. "Look, I think you're really cute. Want to go out sometime?"
"Uh, I just held a knife to your throat," he responded dumbly. I rolled my eyes.
"Yes, now. Date?"
"He would love to!" A voice shouted from the opening of the alley. The old man who ran the tea shop, Iroh, walked towards us.
"Uncle!" Lee called indignantly. "Why are you here?"
"I was worried when you left so abruptly and good thing I came because you almost would have messed up this date with this lovely girl," Iroh shot me a wink.
"How long were you there?" Lee asked, a flush of embarrassment rising to his cheeks.
"Long enough," he quickly responded. "How about tonight at sundown in front of the shop," Iroh asked me.
"Sure," I nodded. "He's gotta make up for this whole endeavor somehow," I smirked and shot Lee a look. With that, I waved goodbye to the two guys and headed off to pick up Cam. This wasn't such a bad day afterall.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Okay Cam, I want you right in bed at sundown, you hear me? No waiting up for me."
"Why, you planning to be out late with your boyfriend?" Cam shot back all too happily.
"No, because you have your lesson at sunrise," I said quickly, making sure I had everything I needed. Would Lee pay? I wasn't sure but I brought my purse just in case. "I worked hard to get us to the middle ring so that you could have a proper teacher and I will not have you being late!"
I felt Cam roll his eyes and sigh at me. "Yes, mom," he groaned. "At least tell me his name."
I turned to Cam, pursing my lips. I had tried to keep this whole date a secret from him, but having a nosy 12 year old in the house wasn't conducive to secrets. He had found out shortly after I picked him up, asking why I was late and accusing me of being out with a boy. When I flushed and stammered in response, he jumped on the opportunity. That was his go to accusation, it just so happened that this time he was right. Not in the way he thought, of course, but partially I suppose. I mean I did ask Lee out on a date.
I thought for a moment, then figured Cam would find out at some point who it was, especially if we went on more dates. I tried not to get my hopes up at the thought.
"It's Lee."
Cam gasped dramatically. "From the tea shop?"
"Yes from the tea shop," I huffed and spun on my heel. I walked over to a mirror hanging on the wall and checked my makeup one more time. I needed to leave soon if I was going to make it on time.
"To imagine, a love blooming from malicious stalkering-"
"I keep thinking you cannot get more stupid and then you prove me wrong every single time," I sighed.
Cam gasped dramatically again. "Wounded, by my own sister!" He cried. "Besides, am I wrong that you stalk him? I bet what happened was he confronted you about your stalker-ering and you were all like 'I've always been in love with you, since the beginning of time-'"
"Oh hush." I turned towards the door so that he couldn't see my blush. I mean, he wasn't that wrong. Lee did confront me about the stalk- watching of him, and I did confess in a way. "I am leaving now. When will you be in bed?"
"By sundown," Cam responded in a high pitched voice, obviously mocking me.
"Okay, bye. Be good," I said as a final goodbye and left.
My walk to the Jasmine Dragon was uneventful at best. Once I got there, I saw Lee outside. He was wearing a nice suit, his hair parted in the middle and slicked to each side. I whistled as I approached.
"Nice 'do, hot stuff," I grinned. He turned to face me, and unless I was mistaken, a blush rose to his cheeks.
"You look beautiful," he blurted, then flushed a bright red that I knew I wasn't imagining.
I was caught off guard by his blatant confession, and I felt a heat creep up my neck. "Uh, thank you. You don't look to bad yourself, though I do think I like your hair all messy better."
"Oh." Zuko reached up and ruffled it, messing it all up. "Like that," he smiled.
"Like that."
"It took my uncle ten minutes to do my hair," he commented.
"Well it took you a few seconds to mess it up, now come on, let's go. I know a great restaurant that's super cheap but super good," I said and grabbed his hand, tugging him after me.
Eating was awkward if anything. Lee wasn't the biggest conversationalist, not wanting to talk about anything about himself, and the food was mediocre at best. It was cheap, though.
"Let's split the bill," I said when we were done eating. Lee opened his mouth to argue, but I stopped him. "I picked the place so it is partially my fault the food was so bad."
"I didn't know you were in the kitchen," Lee smirked.
"You don't know a lot of things about me," I grinned cheekily. At that, Lee's face darkened. He was hiding something big, I knew it. It was probably something about his past, seeing as he was so guarded about it.
"Come on," I said, breaking the tense silence. "Let's get out of here."
The waiter arrived and we paid our check. Luckily, they gave us two cups of tea to go. I took mine and Lee took his and we were on our way.
"Ugh," I groaned, sipping my tea. "This is disgusting, its so cold."
"Here," Lee reached out and took it from me. He held onto it for a second then handed it back. Miraculously, it was hot when he handed it back.
"What the..." Then it hit me. The only way he could have done that was if he was a firebender. I looked up at him in surprise, ready to make a run for it, but then I took another look at him. It wasn't like a Earth bender gave him that scar, and he was here for a reason, probably to start over. That's why he was so defensive about who he was when he questioned me earlier today. So I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. He hadn't hurt me yet, and he didn't hurt me when we thought we were alone in that alley, so I doubted that he'd hurt me now.
"Thanks," I finally decided on with a smile. I let him walk me back to my place, knowing Cam was probably still awake. When we reached my door, I turned to him. "Thank you for taking me out."
"Thank you for uh, not getting mad I held a knife to your throat," he replied, shyly rubbing the back of his neck.
"Well, I don't know if I'm still over that," I said with a small smirk. "I might need another date to see if I forgive you."
Lee's eyes darkened. "I don't know if I can do this-"
"Oh come on," I sighed. "I liked spending time with you, I hope you liked spending time with me. It's not like we're going to get married, just hang out a bit more. Come on, one more date and that's it."
Lee sighed. "One more date. And that's it."
"And that's it." I agreed with finality.
After that, we started going out on dates every few days. We went to festivals together, tried out new restaurants, and even went out on picnics. It was on one of those picnics that I finally decided to confess to him. We were up on a hill under the shade of a great tree, looking out over the sprawling city. We had lapsed into silence.
"I need to tell you something-" We both said at the same time. We both flushed and turned away.
"You first," I said.
"No you." I stayed silent, staring at Lee expectantly until he sighed and caved. "Fine. I think... Well look. There's still so much you don't know about me. I've done some pretty horrible things in my past."
"I think people can change," I asserted.
Lee shook his head. "Terrible, horrible things. Things no one should ever dream of doing. But I did them. I thought that I had lost my honor and that somehow my father could restore it to me... but now... now I am not so sure." He turned to me and grabbed my hands. "Ever since I met you I've felt like I was an impostor, a fake pretending to be someone I wasn't. Now I think this is me." He sighed and closed his eyes. "What I'm trying to say it that I think I'm falling in love with you and it scares me."
I leaned up and moved to kiss him, but he pulled away. "Why?" I said, hurt in my voice.
Lee grasped both of my cheeks and pulled our foreheads together. "Listen, I have to do something before we can be together. I need to make up for my mistakes. I got a message last night inviting my uncle and I to serve tea to the King. I think it's a trap. The Avatar is in the city which means my sister is not far behind."
"Your sister... Who are you?" My voice was barely over a whisper, I was surprised it didn't get lost in the wind.
"I am Zuko, Crown Prince of the Fire Nation."
I paused, my head reeling. I knew he was a firebender but the prince? The prince of the Fire Nation? It was a lot to take in. Luckily he gave me my time and waited patiently for my next question. "And you think its a trap but you're still going to go?" I asked in bewilderment.
"Yes. I need to stop running away from my destiny. You helped me realize that I'm not bad, I can be good."
"What is your destiny?" I asked breathlessly.
"To teach the Avatar firebending."
I pulled my head away from his so that I could get a good look at him. "Then go. And don't you dare not think about coming back for me."
"I will." Lee- no, Zuko looked like he was hesitating, then he pulled me into ferocious kiss, stealing my breath away from me. When we separated,  we placed our foreheads together, gasping for air, our breaths intermingling.
"You have no idea how long I have been waiting to do that," I gasped, but smiled.
"I feel the same," Zuko smiled too. "Now come on, let's go."
With that, he walked me home and then walked right out of my life, leaving me to wonder if I would ever see him again.

-IF YOU HAVE ANY REQUESTS DONT HESITATE TO ASK-
Things after the war ended had been chaotically peaceful. Turns out that leading an entire nation, specially when it was the one that caused the war, and reuniting the lands that had for so long been against eachother was harder than all of you thought. The fact that a group of teenagers were the head of the operation wasn’t a big advantage either.
Sure, Aang and Zuko, who were the ones who had the most important positions when it came to politics and diplomacy, had advisors and people around to help guide them, but it was still a hard job. Nevertheless, without a war or fighting, you were sure it was good for the entire group to keep busy. They’d kept a lifestyle of always moving around and being on guard for so long it would’ve been a big shock to be forced to stay still after that.
Katara and Sokka travelled back and forth from the Southern Water Tribe to the Fire nation a few times, not too often though because of how far apart the two were. That was a shame because of how close you’d grown to Katara and her motherly self, her advice and her unconditional friendship, and even to Sokka and his bad jokes, his way of teasing everyone and how he could make you smile even when you weren’t in the mood, you even missed how mad he made you sometimes. Suki went with them to spend some time away from everything, she loved her life as a Kioshi warrior but she decided she needed a break after everything she had gone through.
Aang, on the other hand, was traveling all over but mostly between the Earth kingdom, were he would very often meet with Katara, and the Fire nation. You got to see him way more often than you got to see Katara, Suki and Sokka, although he tended to be busy with avatar business. He was doing a great job, you had to admit. The people loved him, he found a way to spread his teachings and the teachings of the Air nomads to the world and uniting others helping them put aside their differences seemed to be his thing now more than ever. But most importantly he seemed truly happy, one time he even told you he finally felt like he was making all the air nomads proud, wherever they were.
Toph still wanted to be away from her parents, so she refused to go back to the Earth Kingdom. She hated the cold, not being able to use her seismic senses in the snow and being bossed around by katara, so she refused to go with them too. So when you offered her to stay with you, she accepted. She made it seem as though it was her last choice because she had to keep her tough girl reputation, but actually she liked you a lot, she saw you kind of as a big sister. You took care of her in a way no one had before, not seeing her as helpless and weak but still being there for her when she needed you. Though she’d never tell this to anyone aloud.
And Zuko was still Zuko, just that now he was a Firelord. He took his job very seriously, determined to prove wrong everyone who had said he was too young or too weak for it. He knew the big responsibility he had in his hands and he seemed to be doing really well. He had his moments, of course, where he would have outbursts of emotion and anger, but he always found his way back to being who he needed to be for his Nation, and you always helped with that. He was the one who suggested you stayed in the Fire nation as a representative of the Northern Water tribe. You were hesitant at first, but after thinking the idea over you realized you had no business up in the tribe, you’d been away for a long time and you weren’t ready to go back just yet.
The two of you had never been incredibly close in the time since he joined the gaang, but you couldn’t denied there was a connection between the two. You got his humor and he got yours, you could tease eachother all day without getting butthurt, you could open up and talk about deep stuff under the stars on a sleepless night, and spending time with him seemed easier to do than with most people. You’d brushed this off as the two of you being good friends for a good while, even after you moved into the palace and started to hang out with him more, but for the past few weeks it’s been getting harder to do.
Every time Toph, him and you ate lunch together and he sat in front of you, you couldn’t help but end up staring at him, not in a weird, creepy way but in a ‘I’m mesmerized by you why am i mesmerized by you and since when are your eyes such a beautiful shade of gold’ way. You were in denial about it but deep down you knew you were starting to have a crush on him, and eventually Toph caught up to it too.
One night after diner she pulled you into her room, closed the door and said “Listen, Snow queen, I’m kinda tired of your heart going crazy every time mister flaming pants is around so you either get over your little crush, tell him how you feel or I will personally snitch on you directly to him, understood?” You didn’t even have the guts to deny it to her, specially since she’d know if you were lying, so you just heavily sighed and looked at the floor. She must’ve felt bad for you cause she took your hand and dragged you to sit on her bed to interrogate you about the situation.
“Out of anyone you could’ve ended up liking I never saw this one coming” she told you taking a seat on the opposite side of the bed
“Don’t get me started” you threw yourself back to the bed and stared at the ceiling for a second before speaking again “Like how dumb do I have to be to crush on someone who isn’t only probably the busiest man on all kingdoms right now, but also royalty and... well Zuko. He would never like a girl like me and even if he did, he probably has to end up with a princess or something.”
“I’m not letting you drown in a pity party here, ok?” Toph pulled your wrist and forced you to sit back up and look at her. “He’s lucky a girl as decent as you is willing to put up with that temper of his and how annoying he can get. Now what are you gonna do about it?”
“Nothing?” You replied in a low voice not taking a second to think about it. Toph punched you in the arm in response “Hey, what was that for?”
“What I said before still stands, I can’t deal with you being all flustered every time he’s around, so get over it or tell him how you feel.” She spat and all you could do was grunt and throw yourself back into the bed
So you were gonna get over it then. Easy task. Never done anything easier before.
It wasn’t.
Turns out that by trying to avoid Zuko at all costs you ended up stumbling into him even more. Around the corners, in the hallways, everywhere. The plan was to just avoid him as much as possible until eventually your feelings faded away, you couldn’t have a crush on someone you didn’t even see right? Wrong. Even when you weren’t around Zuko he was still on your mind. You tried to go to the palace library and distract yourself with literature, but reading romance books only made you feel more miserable and the only other option there was were war strategy books which you weren’t very interested in. The next distraction you chose was gardening, you loved nature and you were a water bender, it was the perfect task you thought, but once again you were wrong. You turned out to be such a bad gardener, Kya who was the one in charge of the royal gardens (and who was the sweetest lady) ended up banning you from messing with her flowers ever again. The last thing you could think of to stay away from Zuko was feeding the turtle ducks. It seemed like a good idea and on the few occasions you’d been in the pond before, the little animals seemed to be very fond of you. You couldn’t mess this one up, anyone could feed the ducks, but there was a little problem as it seemed to be the theme of that day, the Fire lord had forgotten to tell you that the pond was his place of choice when he needed to clear his head.
You didn’t even notice he was there until you heard his voice behind you. “Keep feeding them like this and they’ll get obese”
You jumped a bit out of surprise and turned around to face him with your palm pressed to your chest. “Spirits, Zuko, don’t do that to me, you’re gonna kill me one of these days” It was a bright and sunny day, the heat of the Fire nation weather made his face glimmer a little, his hair was up held by the royal Fire lord hair piece and he was wearing a version of his formal attire made for a hotter weather, leaving his muscly arms on display. As soon as you realized you were staring once again, you turned your attention back to the pond in an attempt to hide the blush that was slowly conquering your cheeks.
He took a sit next to you and waited a couple seconds before breaking the silence. “Hey... um... I don’t know if this is just me but you’ve been acting weird lately, is everything ok?” He asked looking at you.
“Everything is fine, definitely just you.” you replied not taking your eyes away from the shining water of the pond. The ducks had grown tired of waiting for you to keep feeding them and swam away.
“I... don’t think so. You didn’t come to breakfast today, everytime we’re together you seem to wanna leave as soon as possible and right now you can’t even look at me.” He paused before taking in a deep breath. “Did... did I do something to upset you?”
You finally turned around to look at him and the look you saw in his eyes was heartbreaking. Ever since he joined Team Avatar, Zuko had been making a huge effort to be good. You could see how sometimes he struggled to pick being kind and gentle over being erratic and explosive, and you also knew that had a lot to do with his childhood. But he had been doing such a good job at it, specially since he became Fire lord, he was so much more friendly, better at socializing and overall improving. And right now it was clear to you that you had made him feel like he was failing at being a good person and he’d somehow messed up with you.
You turned your body around slightly and put a reassuring hand on his knee before saying “Oh, Zuko, no. You haven’t done anything and I’m not upset at you, I mean that. It’s just...” coming up with lies and excuses had always been your strong point but having Zuko there making you ridiculously nervous wasn’t a factor that helped. “I.. uh...I’m getting a little homesick, you know? With Toph gone most of the day and you busy, I’ve been feeling a little melancholic about my home, but it’s nothing I promise. I’m just trying to find something to do with my time.” You we’re impressed with yourself with this one, it actually sounded pretty convincing.
You thought you had the situation handled until Zuko spoke again a few seconds later. “Y/N, I’m sorry. I hadn’t realized until now with all the chaos of being Fire lord but I asked you to stay here and represent the Northern Water tribe and I haven’t even given you time out of my day. I haven’t been the best host, have I?” Before you could even reply he widened his eyes and said “I have an idea, tomorrow I’ll take the day off and we can go on a small field trip to this cabin my family has on the ourskirts of town, there are some nice fields and it’s very peaceful, we’ll have a picnic lunch there and just relax. You can even ask Toph to come with. How does that sound?”
He looked at you expectantly and you started to look for reasons to turn him down, but you couldn’t bring yourself to do it. It was true that you hadn’t had much time to spend with him ever since he took his position, and in all honesty, crush or not you really did miss him. Your weakness for him won the battle and you ended up accepting the plan saying it was a great idea. The regent stood up from his place and assuring you he’d have everything ready for the next day he left.
You really had messed up this time.
—————
The next morning you put on a flowy, flower-print dress. It was classy but at the same time comfortable and light enough to handle the summer weather. You had nervously been looking at yourself in the mirror for way too long now. Before dinner the past night you at least had hopes that Toph would come with to the field trip and she would help you contain yourself when it came to Zuko, but of course that wasn’t the case. When he had brought the topic up at the table Toph limited herself to look at you knowingly and say “You know what? I happen to be very busy tomorrow, you know, I’m trying to get a name for myself in the Fire nation’s fighting scene and I have a fight tomorrow, sorry.” You knew she was lying because she had told you about her fight but instead of the next day it was three days from then. All you could do was look at the little devil and make sure you wrote a mental note of getting back at her as soon as you could.
So here you were, minutes ago from embarking in a field trip with the person you were supposed to avoid, and you had no idea how you were gonna get out of this one.
A knock on your door startled you and took you out of your worrying thoughts. A few seconds later a maid’s head popped in as she said “Lady Y/N, Firelord Zuko and the carriage are ready for you.” You took a deep breath and walked towards the door while replying with a soft “Thank you, Yun”
The carriage waited for you in front of the palace and so did Zuko. He was already inside, sheltering himself from the unforgiving sun, so you startled him when you hopped inside. “Y/N, you look...nice” he complimented you, a faint blush running through his cheeks making him gain a more childish and youthful look.
“Thank you, Zuko. Likewise.” You responded attempting to stay as calm as you could. You hated that he had so much power over you.
He ordered for you to be in your way before the carriage started moving swiftly. Your eyes flowed to the window, looking out at the capital city of the Fire nation. “You’ve done a great job leading this people. They look... so happy.” You drew your eyes back at Zuko as he stared at you. It was you who was starting to blush now.
“I hope so. I’ve done everything I’m capable of to change the old ways of this nation. I hope I’m making the right choices.” A worrisome look took over his eyes as he let his own attention drift towards the streets.
“Hey” you called to him as you stretched your hand to cover his. “You’re doing just fine Zuko. You’ve done so much for these people and all the other nations as well, I’m sure you’ll do even more good.”
He faintly smiled at you as a response and you could tell that although he did worry about the future, your reassurance helped.
The rest of the ride was spent pointing out the animals you saw on the road, sharing childhood stories about when Zuko and his mom used to come here when they both needed to get away from everything, and a bit of teasing about how Zuko had no idea what to pack for a picnic and had to ask the head chef of the kitchen for help. Luckily you had become friends with chef Karou in the time you’d been living in the palace and he knew your taste rather well.
When you finally arrived there was no sight of the usual movement and noise proper of a big city, the air was filled with the peculiar scent of flowers you couldn’t recognize just yet and grass. In the distance at your left you could see a small cattle of Hippo cows and Komodo chickens. And at your right a long field of grass and flowers that seemed to go up in a small and almost unnoticeable hill.
You and Zuko stepped down the carriage just as a guard handed him the picnic basket. The tall regent turned to you and ordered “Follow me, I wanna show you something”. You did as you were told, being led by him all the way up the hill until you were at the very top. When the two of you got there your breath was taken away by the beautiful view you had in front of you. A huge field of flowers layed gracefully at the end of the hill and extended far enough that it connected to the horizon.
“This is...” you started but were so taken aback by the view you didn’t finish your sentence.
Zuko seemed to understand regardless and replied “I know.” Behind you he started to set up a cloth for the two of you to sit on. You forced yourself to remove your attention from the field and place it on what was going on behind you. Taking a seat on the opposite end of the cloth you helped him take out all the items chef Karou had packed for you. When you were done you looked at Zuko and said “Thanks for this. It’s really nice.”
“No need to thank me, I’ve been leaving you alone so much time lately. I know aside from Toph I’m pretty much all you have here so take this as a ‘Sorry I’ve been a terrible friend’ offering.” He smiled wide expecting you to do the same but that smile faded away as soon as he saw the expression on your face.
‘Friend’
The word echoed in your head as your eyes dropped to the food you had in front of you. Of course he saw you as a friend. You had almost convinced yourself you should confess your feelings to him and he goes on to call himself your friend. A knot in your throat started to form and you did your best to show it as little as you could. But you obviously failed.
“Everything ok?” Zuko asked tilting his head to catch your eyes.
You looked up and faked a smile. “Yeah... just thinking how far we’ve come.” You lied through your teeth before continuing. “Anyways, enough of all the cheesiness, I’m starving.”
“Agreed” He replies picking up something for himself. You chose a small salty biscuit with a mix of meats on top and decided to distract yourself with it. “Chef Karou said you’d like that one. He also said you hated onions and peas. What type of weirdo hates peas?”
You chuckled a little, the feeling that oppressed your chest fading away quickly. “I do. They’re disgusting and if you like them I don’t trust you.”
Zuko laughed loudly before remarking “Its not like I like them, Y/N. It’s just a weird thing to be picky over. They’re peas, they don’t really taste like anything.”
You widened your eyes and quickly swallowed the bite of biscuit you had taken. “What do you mean they don’t taste like anything? They taste disgusting and they are mushy and just... gross”
Zuko replies with another laugh. His laugh made you feel warm inside, it could make you forget about everything, Toph’s threats, your previous plans and even the now faint voice poking the back of your mind telling you to be careful or you’d get your heart broken.
The two of you kept eating and chattering at the same time. You’d finished the salty food and it came time for the desert. Chef Karou had made a type of cake and stored it inside a small glass jar. You tried opening the lid but it was too hard. You heard Zuko in front of you offering you help but you refused it telling him you could do it on your own. After a couple minutes of struggling , Zuko took your deep sigh as a sign of defeat and scooted closer to you. “Here, let me.” He took the jar from your hands and quickly opened the lid, handing it back to you. You looked up expecting to find a smug smirk that felt way to familiar to you at this point but instead you found his serious face dangerously close to yours.
You took the jar back and set in down. “Thanks” you muttered softly and quietly. His only response was to slowly but firmly raise a hand up to your face to put away a strand of hair that had fallen. His touch sent shivers down your spine. All thoughts of caution escaped your mind as you felt his face so close you could feel his warm breath mixing with yours. The tension between you seemed to almost be to much to handle when you thought you saw Zuko lean in a little. Before anything else could happen, one of the guards that had come with and stayed back where the carriage was spoke. “Firelord Zuko”
The golden eyed boy dropped his hand from your face and turned around to face the guard. “Have they not taught you to not interrupt people when they’re talking privately?”
“I am very sorry, Firelord.” The guard bowed in sign of respect. “But we have just received a messenger hawk with a letter from the palace. The Avatar and you other friends are here.”

Could I request a jack/reader (any species!) where the reader is super confident and loud but really it’s just a cover for being rlly insecure in herself? I love your writing, thank you so much!
A/N: Thanks for requesting! Hope y’all enjoy! As always requests are open and feedback is welcomed!
Pairing: Jack x Fem!Reader (reader can be any animal)
Tumblr media
Your boyfriend, Jack couldn’t help but wonder what was up with you lately. Usually your perky attitude and expressiveness was enough to make his day go from boring to great in minutes, but all that went away when he noticed a sudden change in your behavior.
During sea speak your always up for cracking jokes or raising your hand during participation. It was just the way you dealt with self confidence and weren’t afraid to speak your mind towards anything or anyone for that matter. But during class today Jack noticed you were silent as ever which was the first red flag that caught his attention. After that he expected you to head over to lunch with him but you skipped it all together in favor of spending some time alone.
Jack knew he should give you space but he also knew you weren’t in the right state of mind to be feeling lonely, after all you did have someone you could rely on and that someone was him. So he walked to lunch, grabbed your favorite meal, and went to your thinking place which just so happened to be Legosi’s as well... the abandoned swimming pool.
Since school was ending there was no need for it to be refilled since everyone was most likely going on summer vacation. You sat quietly and calmly, staring into the distance hoping to distract yourself from what was bothering you in the first place. Just when Jack decided to surprise you with his presence, placed your lunch in front of your lap and sat down beside you.
“I made sure to grab all your favorites,” he assures you before opening up a snack for himself. “Thanks Jack. You didn’t have to do that. You know?”
“I know,” he says taking his eyes off you for a moment. “But I wanted to. It’s the least I could do after all you’ve done for me. I figured you could use some cheering up... you’ve been kind of distant lately.”
That was your boyfriend for you. Caring, optimistic, thoughtful, an all around great guy really. You were lucky to have him in your life and no doubt about it he felt the same.
“Yeah...” you reply contemplating on what to say next. “It’s just...” you take a deep breath and continue on. “I’m not what you think I am. Sure, I have confidence and a loudmouth but that’s only the half of it... In reality it’s just a cover up, a mask to hide my insecurities from the rest of world. Sounds pretty foolish, huh?”
“No, not at all,” he speaks up granting you a sense of relatability. “It’s normal to feel that way. Everyone has moments like that, including me. I don’t want you to feel like you have to put on a persona just so others could like you cause truth is... the only one you’ll end up hurting is yourself. And as someone who cares about you, I can’t let that happen. I love every part of you, just the way you are.”
He was right... about everything. It just took you a while to see it but now you finally understood. Your insecurities don’t define you and you sure as hell weren’t going to let them hold you back. All you needed was some reassurance and who better to give it to you than the love of your life.
You place a soft kiss to his cheek catching him off guard and overall fluster over your affectionate behavior. “I love you too, Jack. Thanks for hearing me out. Sometimes I wonder what’d I do without you.”
He smiles back at you lovingly and carefree as if nothing could ruin this moment between the two of you.
“You’ll always have me,” he promises and returns that same kiss from earlier.
While it is always best to believe in oneself a little help from others can be a great blessing... and Jack was living proof of that.

Ok. First of all. ACCOUNTANT?! Big 🧠. Second of all. I’m wondering since you post a lot of ATLA stuff, would you ever consider writing for that fandom? Such as for our lovely Fire Lord Zuko...?
Oh gosh no, not big brain! Thank you though! (Although ps, I’m currently in my masters and will be graduating in the fall, and then it’s on to my license! Woof, lots of tests and studying lol)
I LOVE ZUKO. Also, I have written a couple of Zutara things on my AO3! But I would love love love to write zuko x reader if you guys think you’d be into it?

The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community. The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company.
[Video Game Deep Cuts is a weekly newsletter from curator/video game industry veteran Simon Carless, rounding up the best longread & standout articles & videos about games, every weekend. This week's highlights include behind-the-scenes on Hidden Folks, an interview about the Coin-Operated Americans book, interviews from E3, and much more.
Well, am back from Los Angeles, attending E3, which was - well - not that different that anyone might expect. Lots of hype and excitement for large AAA games, most of which do have guns all over them (looking forward to more Tim Rogers dispatches like this from Kotaku!), a somewhat overcrowded E3 itself thanks to the consumer influx, and enough games for everyone to be excited about at least one.
For me, that Super Mario Odyssey trailer was enough for me to pre-order the game to play with my son - and finally work out how to get a Switch, which is coming in a couple of weeks. [Sidebar: it's actually a bit crazy how much Nintendo was being counted out by many - including perhaps me. Then, whomp, two games later (new Zelda, new Mario) they're the belle of the ball again.]
But that's why E3 works as high drama, soap opera, and metacommentary hub of the year for video games - we've all got a hot take, and hot takes are king. (Also why there's not a GREAT deal of E3 coverage in this week's VGDC, heh. Not that we're 'hot take allergic', but you can get that on YouTube & Twitch right now in real-time if you'd like.) Anyway, 'til next time...

Developer Q&A: Balancing storytelling and player choice in Prey (Alex Wiltshire / Gamasutra) "Talos-1 runs on eels. This large space station, setting to Arkane Studios’ recently released emergent sim Prey, deals with its residents’ effluent by sending it to large vats where it’s consumed by the things."
Nintendo of America Boss Fils-Aimé On Comebacks, the Future of the DS and Surviving the Wii U (John Davison / Simon Cox / Glixel) "It's almost exactly a year since we last spoke with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé at E3 2016. On that occasion he was standing fifteen feet above that Disney-like Nintendo E3 booth, which was dedicated solely to the forthcoming The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild."
Why 'Super Mario Maker' Didn’t Kill the Mario Hacking Community (Jess Joho / Motherboard) "Yet, playing hyper-polished feats of design like Super Mario Maker leave some longtime fans of the franchise nostalgic for the days of janky programming, kill screens, and brutal challenge. That's why the heroes of the Super Mario World (SMW) ROM hacking community remain stubbornly alive, even long after the release of an official Nintendo Mario level creator."
Coin-Operated Boys: An Interview with Carly Kocurek (Dan Royles / Nursing Clio) "Carly Kocurek’s Coin-Operated Americans: Rebooting Boyhood at the Video Game Arcade (Minnesota, 2015) examines the origins of modern video game culture in the “classic” arcade era, spanning the release of Pong in 1972 and the industry’s first major collapse in 1983. She traces the formation of the “technomasculine” during that period, as the arcade became increasingly defined as the province of young men."
How we make a game called Hidden Folks (Adriaan de Jongh / Imgur) "Hey there! I'm Adriaan, one of the two developers behind Hidden Folks, a game for smartphones and computers in which you search for hidden folks in hand-drawn, interactive, miniature landscapes by unfurling tent flaps, cutting through bushes, slamming doors, and poking crocodiles!"
Offworld Trading Company: An RTS Without Guns (Soren Johnson / GDC / YouTube) "In this 2017 Game Developers Conference talk, Mohawk Games' Soren Johnson dives into strategy game history to explain how he and his team developed Offworld Trading Company, a strategy game with little combat."
These Maps Reveal the Hidden Structures of ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ Books (Sarah Laskow / Atlas Obscura) "Reading a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book can feel like being lost in a maze and running through twists and turns only to find dead ends, switchbacks, and disappointment. In the books—for those not familiar with them—you read until you come to a decision point, which prompts you to flip to another page, backward or forward."
A Falconer Enters the World of Video Games (Simon Parkin / New Yorker) "The story of how Nricco Iseppi, a master falconer, came to Riot Games has, among the company’s staff, acquired the malleability of myth. According to one scriptwriter, it began when Riot had an orange grove planted on its multimillion-dollar campus, in Los Angeles, a place already bristling with perks and mod cons."
Interview: “Rez” creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s unusual life evolves humanity (Staff / Denfaminicogamer) "One midnight, during an internal office chat at the Denfaminicogamer editorial department were the words “They’re crazy.” This was right at the end of 2016 after PS VR was released. As it were, the editorial departments odd excitement resulted in an impulsive interview about VR Contents “Rez Infinite” at the end of last year. This article is a written version of that insane seven hours interview. [SIMON'S NOTE: the translation isn't perfect, but this interview is AMAZING - you rarely see Japanese creators asked historical questions in this kind of depth.]"
The Garden Ages | Myst series (Sam Zucchi / Heterotopias) "How do the linking books in Myst read? These books are, in-universe, written out in the alphabet and language of a dead civilization. The text details the world that the writer wishes to visit: an island is described, its qualities delineated in some detail, and a linking pane appears on the first page, ready to literally transport the reader to the object described."
The RPG Scrollbars: In search of urban fantasy (Richard Cobbett / RockPaperShotgun) "There’s a real urban fantasy gap in the gaming industry, and it’s never made much sense. We see a thousand Tolkienesque fantasy games a minute (rough napkin calculation) and the future’s typically so bright, even the lens flares need shades. Yet when it comes to that line where the mundane meets the magical, mostly what we’ve had for the last few years is false hope."
E3 Was Different This Year, And It Wasn’t Just The Crowds (Nathan Grayson / Kotaku) "It’s the first day of E3. I’m walking the show floor—or more accurately, oozing across it, slug-like, followed by a trail of my own sweat. I’m shoulder-to-shoulder with swathes of people. Across the way, crowds of people whoop and holler, each of them hoping to win swag they can stuff in their floor-length swag bags. 15,000 new people are in attendance this year. [SIMON'S NOTE: one of the most considered of the 'what's up with E3 this year?' articles.]"
7 examples of accessibility design that developers should study (Richard Moss / Gamasutra) "Games are for everyone. And in recognizing this, ever-increasing numbers of developers are making a point to incorporate more accessibility features and options like remappable controls, configurable subtitles, resizable HUDs, and more."
The big interview: Xbox boss Phil Spencer (Wesley Yin-Poole / Eurogamer) "It was with all this in mind that I sat down with Xbox boss Phil Spencer at the Galen Center in Los Angeles to talk Xbox One X. At £449, I'm not sure who the console is for ("there is a customer out there who's looking for the premium experience"). I fear for Microsoft's first-party studio setup ("I do think we have an opportunity to get better in first-party")."
The State Of Virtual Reality (Brian Crecente / Polygon) "One could argue that the age of virtual reality kicked-off during last year's Game Developers Conference, an event that nearly coincided with the launch of two of the technology's most important head-mounted displays in recent history: the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive."
EA Boss Andrew Wilson's Vision of Gaming's Future Will Blow Your Mind (John Davison / Glixel) "The intervening years were tumultuous and challenging. Changing the company to deliver on that vision was a bumpy ride, but now 10 years later, Wilson is eager to convey what the new Electronic Arts stands for, and its vision for the future of games. [SIMON'S NOTE: Much snark online for some of the 'vision' in this interview, particularly the Emily Dickinson bit.]"
Ex-Puyo Puyo producer reveals some of the classic puzzler’s earliest prototypes (Kishi / Retronauts) "Last week, Compile founder Moo Niitani announced two previously unreleased works from the defunct developer’s glory days on MSX2 computers. Later this month, Dominon and Dominon X are both coming to Project EGG, D4 Enterprise’s prolific download service for old Japanese computer games."
Don't Change a Thing! The Challenges of Evolving Solitaire (Russell Carroll / GDC / YouTube) "In this 2017 GDC session, MobilityWare's Russell Carroll shares the experience of updating Solitaire for a modern mobile audience, and what features they were able to update while grappling with intense resistance to any changes made to the core game.  [SIMON'S NOTE: I've known Russell - who used to run indie site GameTunnel - for a LONG time, and this talk is as much about management philosophy as it is solitaire - it's super well-considered.]"
Young Men Are Playing Video Games Instead of Getting Jobs. That's OK. (For Now.) (Peter Suderman / Reason) "Video games, like work, are basically a series of quests comprised of mundane and repetitive tasks: Receive an assignment, travel to a location, overcome some obstacles, perform some sort of search, pick up an item, and then deliver it in exchange for a reward—and, usually, another quest, which starts the cycle all over again. You are not playing the game so much as following its orders. The game is your boss; to succeed, you have to do what it says."
7 roguelikes that every developer should study (Stefanie Fogel / Gamasutra) "With that in mind, we asked developers to name some of their favorite roguelikes - or games in other genres influenced by roguelike mechanics - and the lessons they can teach people today. And, many of these games are free and/or open source, which makes them easy to download, play, and study!"

Sokka x Plus size!reader
Word Count: 1588 words
Warnings: none
Summary: Entering into an arranged marriage with Sokka
——————————————————————————————————
The water tribes were very traditional.
Everything was done under strict rules and guidelines, operating within all those old traditions that you had never really fully understood. They had remained unchanged for many years, and there was no exception to that.
You were no exception.
It was tradition, and traditions were not to be broken, no matter what. It didn't matter what you tried to do, or who you talked to, there was nothing that could be done to change what was happening.
You, being the second born princess of the Northern Water Tribe, had certain duties that you couldn’t ignore. The chief of those was to do whatever Chief Arnook, your father, to you to do. Usually, that was something that didn't bother you in the slightest.
However, when you heard what he wanted you to do at this particular time, you were much more likely to comply than usual. It was bad enough that Yue had decided to take the place of the moon spirit, but now he wanted to send you away from your home, married to some stranger?
It was crazy.
All you wanted to do was live your life, as intended, without a husband from the southern water tribe. It stressed you out, but the worst part was that you physically couldn't argue with him. If he wanted you to get married, you had to do so.
“Father, I need to stay here, now more than ever” you tried, clutching the dark fabric of your skirt as you pleaded with him. You knew your pleas were falling on deaf ears, but you had to try.
An engagement was hardly something you had been expecting when he said that he wanted to speak with you.
“Nonsense, this is the perfect time to form more steady bonds in the south. We cannot afford to squander such an opportunity” he repeated, saying the same thing he’d been saying for the last few hours.
He didn’t have much more of a reason, it would seem.
Not that he needed one.
Still, how could he expect you to just enter into something like this quietly? You knew it would come eventually, but you had always assumed there would be some kind of negotiation if this day did come.
You should have known better.
“I need you to do this for me, daughter. It’s important for the future of our people” he announced, his voice bellowing as always. There was an element of loss in his tone, telling you just how desperate he was for this to work.
Unity was the only way the other nations had any chance of beating the fire nation, and keeping the water tribes together was imperative to any success. Alone, you couldn't do anything, but together, you had a chance.
As much as you hated it, you knew that it was the truth.
“You’re right father” you conceded finally, turning on your heels to leave before you could change your mind. You knew that whatever you had to say, it wasn't going to change anything. You just needed to have some time alone.
He had a point, of course, as he often did but this had all been so much easier when Yue was around. She was older than you, and had borne the burden of that title for as long as you could remember.
You weren't prepared to have to take this on, and now it was all happening so fast. Now that it was all on you, it was so much more difficult to navigate. Until this point, you had never even thought about having to get married. That was always the path laid out for Yue, who had always been the fairer of the two of you.
...At least as far as you were concerned.
She was stunningly beautiful, and mannerly. She was everything that you had ever wanted to be, and now that you had to take her place, you weren’t sure if you could live up to that.
What if the man you would marry didn’t want to have you? What if he was disgusted by you? What would become of your people then, if he rejected the proposal.
You couldn’t handle letting everyone down.
It was your job to make sure that nothing ever went bad, to make sure that your people were taken care of and safe. If the best way to do that was to marry some stranger from the other side of the world, that was just what you were going to have to do.
So, you agreed to what your father suggested and showed up to the meeting place he arranged with Sokka and his tribe. It wasn't a fool proof process, but the tradition had never led the people astray so they trusted it.
As murky as it may have been, the entire thing was very by the books and as strange as it was, it brought you some kind of comfort. It wasn't super emotional, and took all the anxiety out of the entire process of getting engaged.
If nothing else, it was much less messy than a more freeform proposal.
Still, you could hardly contain your nerves as you walked toward that room. You knew that behind those doors was whatever semblance of future was waiting for you, and the unknown was the worst part of that.
You had no idea what to expect, and you wouldn't until you went in. That was the only thing that you could do, and until you did, you would remain completely in the dark. Nothing was going to change that.
Luckily, before you could stress yourself out too bad over it, the doors opened and you found yourself in the company of someone you recognized. Before this moment, you had no idea who you were going to marry, but you never could have imagined this.
The man you were going to call your husband had been in love with your perfect sister and as relieved as you were that he wasn't a complete stranger, you almost wished he was. At least if you'd never met before, there would be no expectations of you.
Sokka had cared deeply for your sister, and that only increased the stress on you to make sure that the marriage went off without a hitch, and that you could live up to the image Yue'd had in life.
In this moment, it was worse than you could have ever imagined but like everything, you knew that you just had to grin and bare it until it was over. That was all you could do, however, there was really no 'over' at all.
Whatever happened here, this was going to be the rest of your life.
"Hello daughter" your father started, already sitting in the room with Sokka, having been discussing the terms of their deal which he'd already outlined with the other tribe. This had been in the works for a long time, and that was even more of a problem for you.
If this did fall through, people not only in your own tribe, but the southern water tribe would be affected. This was so much bigger than the two of you.
You didn't bother to speak, instead taking your seat beside him. You had never been engaged before, but you knew how these things worked. You had been present for Yue's engagement, for example, and you had the basics down.
"As I'm sure you're aware, your union will do great things for both tribes, as is your duty by birth" he continued, not really looking for any kind of acceptance or reaction from either of you. He just wanted to make sure that this was done the right way.
...And it would be.
Every engagement in these tribes went off without a hitch, with very few exceptions, and  you knew that yours would be no different. All you had to do was sit back and allow everyone else to take care of the details.
It wasn't in your nature, but at this point, you'd come to terms with it. This was what you had to do for the greater good, just as Yue had made her sacrifice for the greater good as well. Everyone had a purpose and this union was potentially yours.
The conversation wrapped up naturally, your father finishing his spiel and taking his leave. It left you and Sokka in the same space, not a work between either of you. You had no idea what to say, but luckily, that was something you had in common.
"So, we're going to get married" he decided, shocking you with the casualness of his statement. It was true, and you knew that but you had yet to hear it spoken aloud until this moment and that was blatant.
Still, you forced a smile.
It wasn't that you didn't like Sokka, or that there was anything wrong with him, you just knew that the feelings he'd had for your sister were never going to go away and you couldn't be Yue. You were never going to be Yue.
"Yes, it appears that we are" you agreed. The two of you sat in silence for a few more moments, not a word shared between you. However, before the pressure became too much, Sokka stood from where he was and made his way over to you.
Wordlessly, he sat down your betrothal necklace, a handmade carving hanging from the center and walking out. That was it, that was the missing piece, and now there was no running away from the truth.
You were going to get married.

Zuko x Plus size!reader
Word Count: 1284 words
Warnings: none
Summary: Finding Zuko in the Northern water tribe and hiding him away from the others.
——————————————————————————————————
“What are you doing here?” you barked out, holding your knife high as you looked at the firebender. He had just crawled out of a hole in the ice, and as far as you were concerned, he was the enemy.
After all, the soot in the sand made him look as guilty as anything else.
However, the man didn’t even look phased at your appearance as he tried to breathe. It must have been strange for him, being out of his element…
Good.
“I asked you a question” you repeated, glaring daggers at the man though you had no idea what you would do if he decided to enter into a fight.
You could hold him off for a while, but eventually, he would likely best you. The waterbending you did know was very minimal, all things considered.
“I heard you” he grumbled out, sitting up slowly.
It was a casual movement, compared to what you had been expecting, but you didn’t let up your guard. After all, you had no idea what he was capable of but you weren’t going to let him leave this cave.
If he got out into the city, there was no telling who he could hurt. Not that he really looked to be in the position to hurt anyone right now.
When he pulled his wet hood away from his face, you saw that he was covered in bruises and marks, making it obvious he had been hurt before now.
If he was weakened, you may have had a fighting chance at taking him down.
“Who are you?” he asked finally, taking note of the fact you hadn’t relaxed since he’d arrived here. What kind of person just hung out in the cold like this? All alone.
It baffled Zuko, and that was saying a lot. After all, he loved to be alone and understood the benefits of solitude, but this was a tad excessive.
You sighed.
Firebenders always talked so much. “They call me Y/N. Who are you? What are you doing here?” you repeated, trying to get all the information you could out of him.
He didn’t seem like a threat, but you couldn’t let yourself think that way. He was fire nation, and he was dangerous. He was the enemy and he would kill you if he got the chance.
You couldn’t forget that.
“Are you a fire nation soldier?” you asked then, not even letting him answer the first set of questions you had fired off before it hit you. If he was, you should have just shoved him back into that hole now.
Your people were on the verge of full annihilation and you couldn’t allow him to get out of here.
“No.”
It was an answer, but not a very good one. Especially not considering all the things you had asked him just now. Though, if you knew anything about Zuko, it wouldn’t have surprised you.
“I’m here for the avatar. Once I get him, I’ll be on my way” he assured, shocking you. He didn’t want to kill all of you? You didn’t believe it.
You had never met a firebender before, but from what you had been told, that wasn’t true. The fire nation brought nothing more than death and destruction and this stranger would be no different.
“You’re freezing” you pointed out, noticing the way he shivered as he sat. Firebenders didn’t belong in the north, and he should have known that.
Not that you could really blame him.
“It’s cold”
A lot of attitude from someone who would be drown if you so much as called for help.
“Get up” you decided finally, offering a hand to the man, ignoring the obvious danger you were facing by doing so. You should have just kicked him into the water, but you couldn’t do it.
It wasn’t in your nature to condemn someone to their death, knowing you could stop it.
“You really don’t want to hurt my people? As long as you get the avatar” you clarified, helping him to his feet. It didn’t make any sense but Zuko nodded. He didn’t care about these people, as long as he got the avatar.
That was what he’d come for, after all.
“Do you know where I can find him?” He asked, looking at you with a newfound interest. Perhaps you had a use to him after all, even if you were a bit annoying at first.
You did.
It was wrong to give Aang up, you knew that, but it was too dangerous to let anyone else into this place. You had to protect your people first, and you had to assume that the avatar could handle himself.
After all, the fire nation could tear this place apart, and you couldn’t allow that.
“I’ll take you. But first, you have to warm up. You’ll be no good frozen solid” you teased, not getting much of a reaction from this stranger. He clearly was not easily amused, but you didn’t care.
For some reason, you felt like there was something about this stranger, something that you couldn’t just ignore. He was a person, he felt things and had weaknesses.
It was something you’d never imagined would be possible in the devils of the fire nation. Perhaps that was what prompted you to believe in him so much, but in any case, you couldn’t go back now.
You needed to help him.
“Will you tell me your name now? Or do I have to keep calling you stranger?” you wondered, walking with the man to your home as carefully as you could.
No one was around these back ways right now, seeing as they were preparing for a war, so you didn’t have to worry about getting caught with him.
If you could get a fire started, or at least get him out of the cold, you could get him out of here before anyone else had to find out about a fire bender in the northern water tribe.
It was the most you could hope for.
“Zuko” he grumbled out, keeping close to you though you were only serving to annoy him more and more as you kept talking. You didn’t seem to understand what was at stake if he let the avatar go.
Though he shouldn’t have been surprised.
You didn’t seem to understand much about what was going on at all outside this small island. If only he could make you understand...it would be so much easier.
“You’re the prince, aren’t you?” you realized, putting together everything you should have realized right away. From the scar to his determined way of speaking, you should have known.
They talked of his banishment on every corner of the four nations, and you should have recognized him. No wonder he wasn’t just some heartless killer.
He really wasn’t a soldier.
“Not anymore”
It was so flippant, and you could hardly believe it. He was the prince, he would always be the prince, and he should have known it. “Don’t say that, it isn’t true” you reasoned, sitting down beside him on the ice.
It didn’t make any sense that you were so emotionally involved with him already, or that you cared so much but that was just the effect that Zuko had on you.
He was so powerful, and for being the first firebender you’d ever met, he wasn’t some monster. He was just someone who had been dealt a really rough hand by someone who should have cared for him.
It wasn’t fair but that was just the truth.
It was what he’d been through.
“Whatever you say, stranger” you teased, knowing this conversation was far from over.

Zuko x Plus size!reader
Word Count: 1415 words
Warnings: none
Summary: Zuko making a fire to keep you warm at night
——————————————————————————————————
You weren’t made for the cold.
It seemed like it should have been obvious but you hadn’t considered it all before now. Before, of course, you were sitting in the middle of the woods, shivering in the cold night air.
Earthbenders didn’t have much experience in the cold as a general rule, but that applied even more for you. You had grown up in Ba Sing Se, where winter hardly existed.
In fact, anything more than the dry heat of summer was too much for you.
“Are you alright?”
You didn’t address the voice at first, knowing exactly who it was. You had been traveling with the prince of the fire nation for multiple days, but that didn’t mean you owed him anything.
Just because Aang needed him didn’t mean you had to be friends.
“I’ll be just fine, thanks” you decided finally, looking up at Zuko over your shoulder. You could feel his weight shifting, from one foot to the other, in the dirt but again, you ignored it.
Whatever he was upset about, it wasn’t your problem.
Now normally, Zuko would have taken your reaction as a clear refusal of company but one thing kept him from doing so…
You were shaking.
“You’re shivering” Zuko pointed out, his voice somehow accusatory, even though he was trying his hardest to be gentle. He was just so rough around the edges, even when he didn’t want to be.
It seemed like a stupid thing to point out to you, considering the fact that you were the one doing the shivering but you nodded anyway.
How could you not be shivering with how cold it was out here? Not that you could expect Zuko to understand that.
He practically had fire running through his veins. It wouldn’t have surprised you if he wouldn’t be able to understand cold even if you tried to explain it.
It wasn’t in his nature.
“It’s cold, of course I’m shivering” you grumbled, holding your arms close to your soft body, trying to lock in as much of the heat you had left in as you could.
The way this was going, you’d probably freeze to death before the sun came up.
Nevertheless, those words got Zuko’s attention.
He had already assumed that you were cold but hearing you say it made all the difference to him. It made what he had only thought a reality, and something had to be done about it.
Luckily for him, Zuko was a firebender and if there was anything he could do for you, it was stop you from being too cold. Maybe that would even make you like him a little better.
So without a single word to you, Zuko sat down beside you on the rock you were perched on, not even bothering to explain himself before doing so.
Before you could question him though about what he thought he was doing, Zuko had lit the few waiting planks ablaze, with nothing more than a flick of his wrist.
It was incredible, though, not for the reason you may have originally assumed.
As soon as the logs caught fire, you felt the warmth they gave off all around you. It was like a warm, toasty blanket and you immediately melted a little into it.
It was the warmth that you had so desperately craved, but you couldn’t fully enjoy it. At least, not yet…You couldn’t enjoy it because Zuko was still sitting at your side, silent and impending.
It made you feel uncomfortable, seeing as there were no words between either of you. There was nothing you could say, not that Zuko was doing any better.
It was no secret that you and the firebender didn’t see eye-to-eye on a lot, but he had just helped you greatly when he didn’t have to and you owed him some sort of thanks.
It was kind of him, even if you weren’t quite sure how to respond.
“Thank you Zuko” you settled, your demeanor just as outwardly abrasive as he had been a few moments prior. It would seem that neither of you was all that good at this, no matter how hard you were trying.
It was just so hard to ignore everything that had happened between you. You were just too different.
Weren’t you?
After all, you came from two very different worlds  and you had absolutely nothing in common. It was neither of your faults, it was just the way it was.
You couldn’t change it and neither could he.
Zuko only nodded again, not trusting his mouth to form words. His voice was just as unsure as yours had been, though you had to wonder if there was something more. Perhaps you had more in common than you realized.
“Can I ask you something?” This time, his voice was much more sure, and much more casual.
You could practically hear his heart beating against his chest, but you didn’t mention it. Instead, you nodded, letting yourself glance over at him slowly after a few seconds.
It was rare, as you didn’t frequently allow yourself to look him in the face but when you did, you had to admit that you found yourself drawn to his golden eyes and everything he held beneath them.
Something about Zuko had always just pulled you in and you didn’t have much say in the matter.
“Why do you hate me so much?” he wondered, the question catching you off guard. Of all the things that he could have asked, you never would have guessed that would be it.
Why did you hate him? It was quite the question but the answer was far too complicated.
In all honesty, you didn’t hate Zuko. You could never hate someone that you barely knew, not really. More than anything though, you guessed that you were confused by the firebender.
For so long, you believed that he was the bad guy and for so long, you had thought of him only as the enemy.
...But now, you weren’t so sure.
“I don’t hate you Zuko. I guess I just don’t understand you” you shrugged, finally settling on some sort of answer. It wasn’t what he really wanted to hear, but it was better than the alternative. At least you didn’t hate him.
The realization made him smile, only slightly, but a smile nonetheless.
For some reason, the idea of you not hating him made the firebender feel all warm inside and he didn’t know why. He had made the same development with the rest of the gang, but with you, it was different.
Why was that?
“That’s okay, I guess we don’t know much about each other, huh?” he shrugged, doing his best to keep his cool, though it was proving difficult.
All of a sudden Zuko was struggling with even being able to look at you without feeling his skin heat up. It was strange, but not all together unwelcome.
It was just new.
“I guess not” you allowed, turning now to face the firebender head on. The rest of the gang had turned in for the night, so it was just the two of you, but that didn’t bother you right now.
Instead, you found yourself almost wanting to get closer to him than you ever had in the past.
“Maybe we can fix that, then?” he suggested, his lips upturned in a smirk as he studied your face, those golden eyes flicking back and forth between your lips and your own eyes.
It made you nervous, which was odd considering who you were talking to, but you didn’t fight it as much as maybe you should have.
After all, Zuko had shown you great kindness just now, and you could extend the courtesy. What could it hurt? All things considered, Zuko didn’t seem to be that bad of a guy.
Maybe you had more in common than you had originally assumed.
“Maybe we can” you smiled, letting your eyes drift back to the flickering flames of the fire in front of you.
Usually, you looked at fire as a destroying force and nothing more. It was wild, and unpredictable, and it only brought death and ruin. However, when you looked at it now, you saw something else.
You saw the potential it had as a healing force, or a positive influence. It was beautifully wild, instead of bad and it was strange how quickly that had changed.
Had you really been wrong all this time?

Hiding pt.2

Word Count: 1256 words

Summary: Zuko’s cover has been blown, but what does that mean for him and Iroh?
Part 1
——————————————————————————————————
“You carry yourself like a firebender”
Your words hung in the air for a few moments before you decided to look over at the man to your right.
You expected some sort of reaction from him, whether it be rejection of your theory, or maybe a confession but he said nothing. He was thinking, and if you knew anything, it was likely whether he should kill you or not.
If only he knew.
“Don’t worry, I won’t tell” you whispered finally, realizing he probably wouldn’t speak to you anymore. However, before you could get up and leave him to his brooding, Lee stopped you.
“Why? Why keep our secret?” he wondered, not understanding what reason you would have to not call the soldiers right now. Both he and his uncle were enemies of the earth kingdom.
By not turning them in, you would be betraying your own people.
You only smiled again, thinking over his question for a moment. “Because, you seem like nice people” you decided finally, a twinkle in your eye as you looked down at him.
That should have been more important than anything.
Nice people?
Nice people? Zuko was baffled. How could you accept that? If you had been found out in the fire nation, they would have locked you in a dungeon and thrown away the key.
...But you were going to let them go because they seemed like nice people?
You must have been insane.
“There’s just one more thing” you hummed, kneeling down beside him to get on his level without the commitment of sitting fully. There was one thing you wanted to know, and then you would leave.
Zuko couldn’t argue with that. After all, if he refused you, he was risking you running off to get the authorities. “What is it?” he wondered, wanting to get this over with.
However, you just shrugged, not letting his cold demeanor bring you down.
“What is your real name?” with all the things you could have asked, he should have considered himself lucky that was all you wanted to know, but he still panicked.
You could get past him being a firebender, sure, but could you get past him being the prince of the fire nation? He doubted it.
Still, he had to just put himself out there right now. You had done that after all, letting a couple of hungry strangers into your home.
“It’s Zuko”
This was it.
You were going to freak out in 3...2...1, he just knew it.
...But the freakout never came.
Instead you smiled. “It’s nice to meet you Zuko, goodnight” you hummed, leaning forward quickly to press a quick kiss to his cheek before leaving him all alone again.
“Goodnight”
~
You expected both Zuko and his uncle, who you still only knew as Mushi, to be gone by the morning. Though, you were glad to have found them both still there when you woke up.
“Good morning you two” you smiled, serving them both tea as you sat down next to them.
You knew that Zuko was looking at you, wondering when you were going to tell his uncle that you’d outed him as a firebender last night but you only smiled at him.
“Did you sleep well, Lee?” you asked, sipping your tea casually as you waited for him to answer you. You both knew that wasn’t his name, and that something else was going on, but why weren’t you telling Iroh?
Zuko couldn’t figure it out.
“I slept fine. Can I talk to you for a second? Outside?” he wondered, keeping his eyes away from his uncle as he waited for you to meet him there.
If he didn’t figure something out soon, you were going to drive him insane.
You smiled again as he stood, a sickeningly sweet smile that was different than the usual one he had gotten used to. However, he didn’t say anything about it as he watched you move toward the door.
Once you were outside though, that was a whole different story
“What can I do for you, Zuko?” you questioned, a smug look on your face as you waited for him to talk to you. You had no idea what he could be so upset about.
After all, you hadn’t told him and that was what he had to be worried about, right?
“I wanted to ask you something. Is that alright?” he wondered, drawing connections to what you had said last night. You had asked him a question, so it was only fair that he got to ask you one now.
What could it hurt, all things considered?
You nodded, ignoring everything else other than Zuko in this moment. Whatever he had to ask you, you could answer him honestly. He had shared his truth with you, and you didn’t have anything to hide.
“We will be leaving soon, and I just wanted to ask you if you wanted to come with us” he wondered, rubbing the back of his neck as he waited for you to say something.
He had no idea what you would say or why he even thought he could ask you, but he did and there was no going back now.
“You wanted to ask me to come with you?” you repeated, shocked that he actually wanted you to do something like that. After all, you two barely knew each other, but he wanted to take you with him.
It didn’t make any sense.
Not to mention the fact that you had literally just found out that he was the enemy a few days ago. It didn’t make any sense at all, but the worst of it was that you wanted to take him up on it.
What was wrong with you?
“I did” he suggested, reaching out to take your hand in his own nervously. Zuko never did things like this, never, but when it came to you, he couldn’t help himself.
You were just so different than anyone he’d ever met.
“And you want me to come with you?” you clarified, shocked that he was being serious.
You had gotten to understand Zuko pretty well in the last few days that you’d known each other but this behavior was strange for what you thought of him.
He never seemed like he liked you very much at all and now he wanted to take you with him.
“I would like you to come with me, yes” he repeated, honestly doing his best to connect to you in the most real way. He hadn’t told you anything about himself but you knew everything about him you needed to know.
It was incredible.
...But most incredible, was that you actually found yourself nodding before you could think about it.
What were you thinking? You couldn’t actually leave this place, the only place you’d ever known, to go on the run with some firebender, could you?
That would be crazy.
But apparently, you were crazy.
“I’ll come with you, Zuko” you grinned, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek before turning toward the door. It was going to take a little bit of explaining to get Iroh on board, but Zuko didn’t care.
For you, it would be worth it.
After all, what other girl out there could read him like you did? Zuko was sure such a creature didn’t exist and he wasn’t about to lose you over some stupid war.
Any amount of hiding would be worth it if he got to see you again tomorrow.

Betrayal pt.2
Tumblr media
Zuko x Plus size!reader
Word Count: 1668 words
Warnings: none
Summary: Can two people bonded by history every really separate?
Part 1
 ——————————————————————————————————
You wanted so badly to hate him, to go back to the way you were before he showed up on the shore, but you couldn’t.
Even if he had done all those terrible things against the fire nation, and even if he was a lowly coward with no honor, he was still Zuko.
You had seen it in his eyes.
It was desperation, irrational and hurried that showed you what you’d been missing all this time. Zuko wanted to prove that he was better than they thought he was, and you owed it to him to let him try, right?
You had to do something.
It was against your better judgement, as most things were at this point but you didn’t care. In the dead of night, you crept down the hall toward where you knew the prince was staying.
The damage done to his ship was far beyond what he’d originally assumed and it would take a few days to get it up and running. It was bad news for him in his task to find his honor.
...But it was serving you well tonight.
The cover of night meant that most of the high ranking fire benders had retired to their chambers for the night and no one else mattered much to you anyway.
The soldiers didn’t have any room to question you, and you wouldn’t answer them even if they could.
The dimly lit hallways were quiet as you made your way to his room and knocked on the door. It took a few moments to build up the courage to do so, but it came quickly enough.
“What are you doing here?” Zuko wondered, shocking that you would show up here. You had no idea what you were doing, to be fair, but you knew that if you didn’t, you would regret it.
You had to figure out what had really happened in those two years.
After all, there had to be something he wasn’t telling you. There had to be something that you had missed, or that the fire nation had neglected to tell you.
Zuko wasn’t the spineless lot you had been told he was.
“Commander Zhao sent me to see how your stay was going” you lied, slowly letting your eyes drift up to his face. You both knew that it wasn’t the truth but that didn’t seem to matter.
No matter how much time had passed since you’d been this close, nothing was ever going to change the fact that Zuko knew you better than anyone.
Not even a few years at sea could dull that connection.
“Is that all?”
He knew that it wasn’t, you both knew that it wasn’t, but you couldn’t make the words leave your lips. There were few words to make it better, to sum up how you were feeling.
You had been thinking about this for so long. You spent most nights just imagining what you would say to him if you ever got to see Zuko again, but now that he was in front of you...you couldn’t form the words.
It made no sense at all.
“I guess it is” you shrugged, wondering now if this was the worst thing you could have done. Perhaps you should have just stayed in your room, and never done this in the first place.
You should have known there was nothing you could say.
“Perhaps I just wanted to see you” you decided, after a few moments. He had already made it very clear that he had missed you, so he couldn’t blame you for that.
However, that didn’t mean it was any easier to admit.
You had spent so long running away from the way Zuko made you feel and coming out with it just seemed like too much. You had no way of knowing how he would react.
Not that you had to wait long to find out.
As soon as the words left your lips, Zuko nodded. You had said it with such uncertainty but he had to hope that it was true. There was so much wrong with having any sort of illusion toward your relationship, but he couldn't help himself.
He had loved you for many years, and no amount of distance or lies would stop it.
“I hoped that you would visit me. It’s been too long” he smiled, a slight smile for sure, but it was more than he could muster for anyone else. “-would you like to come in?” he wondered, after a second.
It was a risky suggestion, but you didn’t hesitate to take it. If nothing else, it was your chance to clear the air about the things everyone had told you about this man over the years.
You had been told so many things, and you just wanted to know how much of it was true.
The inside of Zuko’s chambers were empty, aside from a few flickering candles on the side table. Nonetheless, you sat down on his bed, ignoring the way the mattress shifted.
“I’ve been meaning to ask, how did your ship come to so much damage?” you started, thinking that would be easier to discuss than the past between you.
...If only you knew.
It would have been much easier to swallow than talking about all the things that you had missed out on in your time apart and the things you were feeling.
It was much more difficult than anything you could have dealt with in your isolation.
“Nevermind that. Tell me how you got here? Why aren’t you in the fire nation?” he questioned, confusing you with how quickly he changed the subject.
Not that you should have been surprised.
Zuko had always been the kind of man to wear his heart on his sleeve and it didn’t shock you that the first thing he wanted to do was talk about your past. Especially seeing as it was the one thing you were trying to avoid.
“I joined the fire navy battalion shortly after you left, I chart out battle plans” you informed, not surprising Zuko in the slightest. You had always been gifted in those sorts of things.
Though, he always hoped that he would be by your side when you moved up in the ranks.
Not that he wasn’t happy you’d done it on your own, given the circumstances. You deserved all the success in the world, it just saddened him a bit to have lost out on so much time with you.
“I didn’t want to go back with you not there” you shrugged after a few seconds, once again letting the truth leak through your tightly sealed lips. It was much more likely that than anything else, but Zuko couldn’t blame you for hiding it.
You had been through so much in his absence, he was sure of it, and it killed him every day that he was away...but you didn’t have to worry about that anymore.
“Perhaps if you would allow it, I could take you with me when my ship is repaired?” Zuko tried, knowing full well that you could reject him without a shred of warning.
It was worth it to him though, because even if you did turn him down, he would know. He would know where you were and that you were taken care of without him.
It put his mind at ease.
Still, it would be a lie to say that he didn’t want you to take him up on it and never leave his side again. If you asked him to, Zuko would have screamed it from the rooftops, and told everyone in all four nations of his love for you.
...But you wouldn’t ask that of him.
Your feelings for one another had become so guarded and hidden away that you couldn’t ask him to do that. However, that didn’t change that fact that you wanted to agree.
More than anything, you wanted to never be without him again, but was it really that simple? You weren’t sure.
After all, you were in the middle of a war and that wasn’t exactly the time to take up on old flames and unresolved feelings. You had a duty to the fire nation, as Zuko did.
You didn’t want to neglect that.
“Take me with you? Could we really do that Zuko, after everything?” you gasped, shocked that he would even suggest it. You wanted to say yes, of course, but it was sort of crazy to even say it out loud.
After what you’d been through, he was just going to take you out with him to the middle of the ocean and never look back? It couldn’t have been that simple.
Nothing was ever that simple.
“Come with me”
This time, it wasn’t a casual suggestion or a gutsy proposal. In Zuko’s voice was pure desperation, the kind of desperation you had yet to hear from him and it struck you.
It stuck you in a way that you hadn’t felt in a long time.
You had been running from the way that you felt for Zuko for months and being faced with it head on now was almost too much to bear. However, you took a deep breath and urged yourself to focus.
You weren’t a little kid anymore, and you had to think about more than just what you wanted.
“I want to, but I can’t” you sighed, getting up from your seat quickly as the words fell from your lips and before Zuko could even process what had happened, you were gone.
He should have known that would be pushing it too far.
He had just gotten you back, but here he was, feeling like he was losing you all over again. It goes without saying that tonight was going to be a long one for both of you.
Still, Zuko had some hope that you would change your mind before it was time for his ship to leave the harbor again.

Zuko x Plus size!reader
Word Count: 2008 words
 Warnings: none
Summary: Reader runs into Iroh off the beaten path and decides to help him find his nephew, the ever mysterious Zuko.
——————————————————————————————————
You had no idea what an old man like Iroh was doing out in the woods all alone, or why he was just sitting in the middle of the deserted rock land, but that didn’t mean anything. In order for you to question why he was there, you’d also have to question why you were there as well.
...And you didn’t really want to do that.
So instead, you decided to just enjoy the zen space that Iroh had created for himself. You two drank tea together, and talked about life and the things you were running from. After all, anyone traveling alone was surely running from something.
Although, Iroh made it clear that he wasn’t alone, not really. The way he told it, he was traveling with his nephew, who had lost his path somewhere along the way.
It was clear to you in the way that he spoke about him that this nephew of his was very important to Iroh, and that inspired you. See, you weren’t really looking for anyone or anything out here, but he was and perhaps you could help reunite them.
All things considered, no one knew these woods better than you did and if his nephew was out here, Iroh had the best chance of finding him with you by his side. Besides, you weren’t exactly busy right now anyway.
In any case, Iroh was happy for the company. For a young woman traveling alone, you had more spirit and care in your body than he was used to seeing in anyone nowadays. With the war surging on after so long, most people were cold toward others.
For good reason.
Though, you didn’t hesitate in striking up a conversation with him and for someone like Iroh, that meant something. Perhaps some of that positivity and freedom would liberate Zuko from the pain and fear that plagued him.
It would be worth seeing, if nothing else. You were a good person, and with as few of those as there were, Iroh also found himself wanting to take you up on your offer to ensure your own safety.
The two of you on the road together were bound to run into trouble at some point, but between the old general and you, any threat didn’t have a chance. If nothing else, it could present a good opportunity to prove that you shouldn’t be underestimated.
All things considered though, the decision had been made and you and Iroh were on the road without much more conversation. The more ground you could cover before sundown, the better. Iroh had no idea what kind of trouble Zuko could have gotten himself into in the time since they’d separated.
After all, trouble seemed to follow that boy like a hungry turtle duck with nothing else to do. It was drawn to him and nothing was going to change that.
...No one knew that better than his uncle did and he was sure that you’d find out soon enough.
“So, tell me about this nephew of yours? What is he running from? Surely he would want to stay with such delightful company if given the option” you hummed, walking alongside Iroh at the pace you two had established.
The stones crumbled beneath your feet with each step, with which you could feel the entire pulse of the land for miles in any direction. Any sort of attack was unlikely due to the vibrations it would cause, but you didn’t bother telling Iroh that.
Whatever it was that you two could run into, it would be fine. You were just much more interested in why he was out here in the blistering heat for someone who clearly didn’t care whether he was near or not.
Whoever his nephew was, he obviously didn’t understand what a gem of an uncle he had, or else he would have never left him in the first place.
Anything could have happened to him out here, from bandits to a stray sabertooth-moose-bear wandering too far from the forest. His life was in danger at all times, just like everyone else's was, but still, Iroh only sat completely content.
Someone as old as him had to know how dangerous the fire nation was, but you would have never known it from talking to him.
“He is lost, but I have faith that he will find his path in time. I have simply chosen to let him find his way on his own” he allowed, that same distance but loving look crossing his features at the mention of him.
His nephew was one lucky man, whoever he was, because Iroh clearly cared very much for him.
You only wished you had someone in your life that cared for you that much.
“I’m doing the same, in some ways” you tried, letting a second or two pass between you before continuing. You were really bearing your soul to a complete and total stranger but it felt okay.
Something about Iroh reminded you of your grandfather when he had been alive. It was comforting, and it made you realize how much you missed your family in the first place. It had been so long since you’d felt that way.
“My family was killed in a fire nation raid, and I guess I just never felt at home anywhere after that” you shrugged, not even phased as the words left your lips. It made you sad to think about but you weren’t the only one who had ever lost someone.
It was just a part of life, especially this close to Ba Sing Se, and it had been many years ago now. There was no point in mourning them everyday when you could live in their memory each day that passed.
It just felt like a much better use of your time.
Still, the words seemed to strike a chord with Iroh. He knew it was likely the war had affected you in some ways but he hadn’t thought about what that could mean when you found out the truth about who he was.
It likely wouldn't go over well when you found out that he and Zuko were actually fire nation. Though, that news could wait a little longer to come to the surface. It was much better for you to feel at home for your time together than to hate him completely.
After all, you seemed like a wonderful spirit and to break that so early would be a tragedy.
So, he only nodded casually as you spoke, knowing how hard it must have been for you to admit to a virtual stranger. “I’m very sorry for your loss. I believe everyone has lost much in this war. Personally, I lost my son to the front lines” he informed, trying to prove his point.
Talking about Lu Ten stung, but it was just the sort of thing Iroh knew needed to be out in the open. If you two were to be spending much time together over the course of this journey, it was better you knew something about one another.
...And to be fair, the journey you’d embarked on was nowhere near over.
The commotion of the battle between a large number of strangers could be heard over the hill where  you and Iroh had been walking, and as soon as he heard it, the older man knew what it must have meant.
It was the kind of commotion that he’d only heard like that since taking in Zuko, and he knew that must have been what it was. However, the last thing he was expecting when he rounded the corner was Azula.
Somehow she must have been tracking them, and at some point ran into the avatar as well, which caused quite a bit of tension immediately.
...And you were caught in the middle of it.
Not that you really minded.
In the time that you had been traveling with Iroh since you met, you had grown pretty fond of the old man and if there was trouble, you weren’t going to let anything happen to him. Not to mention the fact that you found out pretty quickly that his nephew was in the middle of it all.
Apparently Iroh wasn’t kidding when he told you all about his nephew’s wild temper, which you were getting to see up close and personal.
You just had to hope he wasn’t so chaotic in casual conversation.
No one could be, right?
You were wrong.
You had been very clearly wrong about your assumptions regarding Iroh’s nephew. As soon as you found yourself sitting across from him, you could tell that he was just as he’d been described to you.
During the fight you had all been part of, Iroh had managed to take a strike of lightning which knocked him both off his feet and unconscious. Though, you weren’t too worried because he seemed to be alright.
It was just going to take him some time to recover.
However, his resting gave you a chance to get acquainted with his nephew, who you’d come to know as Zuko in the time you’d been sitting here. He was a complete and total stranger to  you but you couldn’t help but feel like you knew him after all Iroh had told you.
“What are you doing here? How do you know my uncle?” he asked at first, giving you curious glances between looking at where Iroh was currently resting, sighing contently like a dreaming child.
His body wasn’t quite ready to get up but that was okay. The two of you were going to make sure that he was alright, no matter how long he chose to sit there.
“We met on the road, and he told me about his search for you and I decided to help him out” you shrugged, hoping that would be enough of a reason to justify why you hadn’t left yet.
If nothing else, you now had to make sure that Iroh was going to be okay.
You half expected Zuko to answer you with some sort of hesitance or dismissal but it never came. Instead, he nodded, thinking over what little information you had given him about yourself.
There wasn’t much to talk about between two people who had just met each other but you didn’t let that bother you. There were very few people you couldn’t bond with, at least a little bit, and Zuko was no exception.
“Iroh really loves you, you know that don’t you?” you hummed, brushing the older man’s hair from where it had fallen into his face, smiling at him as he rested.
You could tell that no one had ever loved Zuko as much as Iroh did, and in that same vein, you could tell that the male in front of you didn’t really realize that was the case.
But it wasn’t because he didn’t care.
Zuko cared about his uncle very much, but he didn’t understand anything much more than his own desires and the things that had happened to him that were less than happy.
He was miserable thinking about where he came from, his family, or the things in his past. However, you knew better than anyone that the past doesn't define you and you were determined to prove that to Zuko.
It was all you could do for him, even with the little comfort between the two of you.
“Of course I do. What kind of question is that?” he wondered, a little too quickly and aggressively for your taste. “It’s the kind of question you ask someone you just met, apparently” he grumbled, rolling his eyes at you.
…Moody much.
By this point, you were sure that Iroh’s description of Zuko had barely scratched the surface but you weren’t even bothered by it. In fact, it only increased your desire to get to know him better.
No one was that one sided, and you knew that if you dug a little deeper, you would get to know who he really was.
