Still There

I have read the poem a dozen times now,

maybe more, hoping to be done with it,

but I can’t seem to get past page 130.

Billy Collins telling me about Where He Lives,

the trapezoid of his property, the Plum Creek

that crosses the road out front, his tendency

to stand at empty windows and stare out

at his kingdom garnered from selling stacks

of books at signings, Barnes & Nobles, and

those readings at local colleges where

you think you will get to meet your hero

but you never do.

Maybe it has something to do with

my father, or the raindrops on the pane,

or the simple task of listing observations

in the order that they strike the mind

without convention or logic but rather

like the wisps of smoke that fall into your

lungs without you even realizing, because

even though we never really say it,

that is the way beauty works.

So I read from afar, trying to discern what

it is about this piece that has me stuck,

my feet planted in the driveway, looking up

at the house, wondering if it really has only

nine rooms, one for each idea that has come

from this single stack of stanzas so neatly

layered like the hours of the stone cutter

placing one infinite possibility atop

another until you have something

of which to be proud.

Introduction to the Internet

By Billy Collins

I ask them to take a website

and hold it up to the light

like a color slide

or right click the mouse against its hive.

I say drop a mouse onto a mousepad

and watch him probe his way around,

or walk inside the internet’s rooms

and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to waterski

across the surface of the web

waving at the creator’s name on the shore.

But all they want to do

is tie the internet to social decline

and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose

to find out what its real power is.

The Art of Imitation

If only every word I chose was as hefty and vivid

as a line from Tennyson, then I could rule the world,

scale towering peaks, sail into some uncertain future,

but until then I must settle for watered-down Collins

and resort to simple observations about my writing

desk, what the flowers are doing outside my window,

and how they are not really flowers but my thoughts

fluttering away on a breeze like so many syllables of

laughter from children who age quicker than fashion.

So it's a snowy Saturday evening and I'm almost a teenager (or maybe I am at this point, who can say), and my parents are driving us home from church and we get home, and I make everyone stay in the car because Billy Collins is reading "The Trouble With Poetry" on A Prairie Home Companion, and I am entranced because I had just been teaching myself to write, and this poem, crackling over the radio, convinced me I was making the right choice. . The Trouble With Poetry and Other Poems by Billy Collins remains to this day, virtually a lifetime later, as one of my favorite books of poetry. I always end up feeling at home in it, which is at turns a comforting thing and a melancholy thing. I suppose that is one of the best ways to feel about Collins' poetry. . April: National Poetry Month I’ve been experiencing the poet, Billy Collins’, wonderful course on MasterClass.com. On April 1st, after a particularly inspiring segment, I spontaneously asked: A L E X A—I’m spelling it so she doesn’t hear me and answer—“When is National Poetry Month?” Her reply, “Today. National Poetry Month is celebrated in the month of April.” No fooling. Well I never. In philosophy, “poiesis” is "the activity in which a person brings something into being that did not exist before." Billy Collins says writing a poem is not a recording of an event that happened, but rather an experience of some thing unfolding. And if we write the poem in that way, the reader has the possibility of experiencing it too. I’ve loved this course and highly recommend it.
