Early 2000s/late 1990s anime that is now on the verge of ‘forgotten’ status

I’m talking about those nostalgic analogue animations, or when the anime industries were facing a strange identity crisis of digital or analogue. I don’t know about you, but looking back, that period of anime certainly was the most mature I’ve ever seen, even compared to most shows ever released in the past decade or so.

Fucked up little piece of symbolism I’ve been thinking about when it comes to Train is with whether people use his name or “Black Cat”. It really gets to me because not only does it show the level of closeness they have with him but also how they view him. Black Cat is the weapon, the assasin, the employee. Train on the other hand is the person, the partner, the aggravator. “Train” is usually what people who know him as a close friend call him and “Black Cat” is what his former and or current employers call him. But the script is flipped with Creed who calls him “Train” because he’s deluding himself into thinking he has that closeness when really he only ever knew the persona of “Black Cat” and never the person that is “Train”.

Something for the TrainSephy shippers...

The thing is last night I searched for some info on another Black Cat game called “Black Cat: The Mechanical Angel” (already have some basic things to post but later). As I watched the video about the game, there were a scene where Train kinda roaming around on a yatch to find some clues and found himself lost in a room.

Train: Ah, this room…is this Zipangu style…?

Train: Ah, there is a Kimono here too.

Train’s thoughts: Heh, it’s beautiful-…Moreover, I don’t know what it is…but it smells so good….

In this case, there are two possibilities of what smell Train notice. Maybe it’s something in the room, maybe it’s the fabric softener of the Kimono (he is wondering since he doesn’t know what brand it is). Because he is inspecting the Kimono, I incline to believing it is the latter (or I just like to be delusional).

Train’s thought: Ah, but that girl was wearing a Yukata, not a Kimono… (he thought of Saya for a moment here I think)

And guess who appears?

Sephiria: What’s wrong, Heartnet?

Train: Woahhh! Se-Sephiria? Why are you here?

Sephiria: You’re the one who-….What’s wrong with this room, anyways?

Train: No, no, umm-uh….I thought there was a beautiful Kimono…

Sephiria: This is my room-…didn’t you know that I like Zipangu?

Sephiria: That Kimono is mine too. I see. So you were also interested in Zipangu, weren't you…

*Girl unless you are talking about the food I can swear to you he is not.

Train: Your Kimono....ha! Really....!? And even the room in that hotel!?

Sephiria: Yes. The hotel is also a branch of Chronos. I have my own room there too.

Sephiria: ...? What's the matter, Heartnet? You don't look so good.

Train: Nothing...

*Well, you tell him, Sephy. He not only thought that Kimono was pretty but also smelled good and then found out it belonged to his former boss (￣y▽￣)╭ Ohohoho.....Tbh If I were him, I would die from self-consciousness. Complimenting on the look is one thing but the smell is another. He's lucky he did not say that out loud.

Sephiria: I don't know what happened to you, but if you were distracted during battle...You could lose your life, Heartnet.

Train: Thank you for your advice.

Yeah still translations from apps but I think the meaning is not so different from the originals, since the image quality is good for the apps to scan letters and the conversation is quite simple. Some image has hand-writing, like those with info about The Guardians, and the trans of those are likely to be more inaccurate. But anyways, game like this often let your characters talk to others to gain important clues. Here Train just talked to her to discover how embarrassment could have ended him if he had spoken a few words more.

Sephiria is just as oblivious as she should. Girl was so happy thinking he also shared the same interest in Japanese culture she forgot to ask him why he was there.

40 Day Anime Challenge 2023 Edition - Day 35: An anime you regret watching

Black Cat

Synopsis: "Train Heartnet is a famous assassin known as Black Cat. He works for Chronos, an organization that secretly controls the world. However, he begins to question the morality of his actions after he befriends two bounty hunters named Saya and Sven, a thief named Rinslet, and a young girl named Eve."

Oof... this one hurts. I was SO CLOSE to falling head over heels for this show!! The first few episodes got me hooked, and I loved the characters enough to keep going.... even after the story took a severe nosedive. No, not just the story the pacing, the execution, everything after those early 6-is episodes was just a mess. So why did I keep watching? Because I am weirdly stubborn about finishing things I started, no matter how long it takes me. I have several lists of books, manga, anime, etc that I left unfinished, as a reminder to finish them one day. There are obviously exceptions to the rule (once you "NOPE" out of something, it's probably best to follow that gut feeling lol), but for the most part I like completing things, even if I'm bad at doing so in a timely manner.

As it happens, I finished Black Cat within weeks out of pure spite, because I was SO ANGRY that something that started off SO GOOD was deteriorating rapidly before my eyes. I'm sure the manga is leagues better (this anime came out in the era of most anime going off the deep end while the manga continues on its own path), but the anime was soooo disappointing. >.>"

Still, finishing Black Cat taught me a valuable lesson: sometimes, no matter how much I want to finish things, it's okay to just.... not. If something is not pulling me in, or I'm dragging my feet, just shelve it. It's not worth the frustrating hassle just for a check-off mark on list of completed series.

-Train no es para nada fan del té, incluso si y/n le ofrece por bromear, este solo tendrá una mueca de disgusto ( aunque solo tomara un poco por y/n )

-Es probable que y/n un poco mas y le vuela la cabeza por accidente a Train al entrenar con una pistola, por fortuna Train reacciona rápido y lo esquiva épicamente ( fue un asesino a sueldo y ahora cazarrecompensas por lo que es un profesional en ese aspecto ) y/n entro en pánico casi tirando la pistola al carajo pero Train la recuperó fácilmente instándola a seguir practicando y básicamente presumiéndole que él es "inmortal".

-Train descubrió de cierta manera que es celoso, incluso cuando él odia ese sentimiento, si ve a su y/n muy cercana a otra persona de manera muy amistosa tiene la ilegal necesidad de apretar el gatillo, pero en su mente se detiene a si mismo y confía en y/n, pero eso no le quita la obvia mirada "sonriente" que en realidad no esta "feliz" (probablemente arañe lo que tenga detrás de él mientras finge estar bien ).

-Ten por seguro que Train tiene 0% conocimiento acerca del S 3 X 0, literalmente lo mas cercano que sabe es por revistas, imágenes o comentarios de terceros ( Sven ), él nunca le interesó en primeras pero en el momento que comenzó a sentir cosas por y/n también empezó a sentirse "raro" en su cuerpo. Se sentía hasta avergonzado de tener deseo de "tocar" a y/n. ( Literal estuvo tanto tiempo restringiéndose que fue y/n mismo quien hizo los primeros mini pasos para "eso" ) y si, Train por mas raro que suene, se sonrojo al punto que su cara explotaría y por primera vez intentaría huir de la situación.

-¿¿¿¿¿Sorprendentemente dulce?????? en serio, luego de que y/n y Train comenzaron a salir oficialmente Train se volvió un poco mas vulnerable a su alrededor? mucho mas servicial, mas cuidadoso con sus palabras, literalmente su naturaleza es dejar salir todo lo que piensa, pero con y/n siempre elegía bien sus palabras por temor a incomodar a y/n.

-Le encanta tirar pequeñas indirectas a y/n, cosas como " Wow, se nota que te estas congelando " cuando hace frio. Cualquier excusa para abrazarte es bienvenida, sabe que solo puede pedir un jodido abrazo pero siempre tiene que inventarse una justificación para ello, es por eso que le deja algo sorprendido cuando y/n solo viene y lo abraza sin motivo aparente, porque su razón es simple y llanamente " porque quiero abrazarte" y eso le hace sentir avergonzado pero luego se calma como un gato ( incluso ronronea quien sabe )

-Besador innato, literalmente en alguna sesión apasionada él actuara por instinto, parece ser muy fan de comenzar lento saboreando primero, luego solo se deja llevar y termina en una sesión intensa, y/n posiblemente acabe sin aire, le gusta mucho sostener la mejilla de su y/n luego solo sostener su cintura para abrazarle mas de cerca, mientras mas cerca mejor, ni él sabia que fuera tan apasionado. Lo haría en sitios privados pero estaría interesado hacer esas sesiones en algún callejón por la adrenalina del momento. Solo imagina a alguien encontradolos y que su primera reacción fuera mirar al extraño con ojos filosos sin dejar de besar a su y/n, una mirada que le dijera " lárgate" y que por supuesto el extraño huyera para que luego seguir besándose.
