F1s new Las Vegas Grand Prix aims to stay on the calendar forever | 2023 Formula 1 season
The team behind Formula 1’s new Las Vegas Grand Prix aim for the event to be on the world championship calendar far longer than its initial three-year deal. F1 first raced in the city in 1981 on a track in a casino car park. However it failed to attract much local interest and was dropped after a second race the following year. Earlier this year F1 confirmed a new street circuit in Las Vegas will hold a race from next year. Emily Prazer, the senior vice president of commercial at the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix company which is organising and promoting the race, discussed preparations for the series’ return to the Nevada city in a recent BlackBook Motorsport Forum event. Unlike other grands prix, F1 owner Liberty Media has a direct financial stake in this event as it will run partly on a stretch of land it has purchased and the organising company is also part of Liberty’s business portfolio. The race’s contract may only run to 2025, but those behind the grand prix clearly hope it will continue far longer than that. “From our point of view, we purchased a piece of land with the intention of having a race here. I don’t think there’s any intention to only be here for three years. We want to be here for forever,” said Prazer. F1’s first visit to Las Vegas was not a success “This is such a unique market and somewhere that we think we can keep continuing to grow the sport. So we’re very excited about that kind of permanent infrastructure that will be in place. “From our point of view – and it’s definitely not something that’s ready to share more broadly – but we’re looking at how that piece of land and what we do on it from a year-round perspective becomes an experience in Las Vegas like no other.” Although there has been a lot of enthusiasm in launching the grand prix from the most influential parties in Las Vegas, from casino owners to city governance, there have also been expectations placed on F1 to ensure there is minimised disruption to the city’s workforce. The street circuit which will hold the race encircles several casinos which are major tourist destinations, so attention had to be paid to ensuring these could still operate. Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free “Significant planning has been going into daily meetings with resorts and casinos around how we ensure that the island we’re creating is completely accessible, mostly for staff,” Prazer explained. Track data: Las Vegas Street Circuit “One thing that we really didn’t factor in from our understanding is the shift change patterns and how many people actually work in Las Vegas in terms of that hotel industry. So we are constructing bridges to make sure that people can come in and out of that inner circuit area as much as we can, and we’ve been very strategic about where we’re placing the really heavy [traffic] areas.” The race will be the third American round on the 2023 F1 calendar. It joins the United States Grand Prix, which has been held in Austin since 2012, and the Miami Grand Prix, which was added to the schedule this year. “We’ve got such a good relationship between the three different US territories [hosting F1 races] that we’re working quite closely together to make sure that we maximise where we are in the US right now,” said Prazer. The teams promoting the other two US races “work hand in hand with each other” and the Las Vegas team to be “completely complementary to one another” as events, she added. Interview with BLKBOK
We had the pleasure of interviewing BLKBOK over Zoom video. Neoclassical pianist and Detroit native BLKBOK is set to soundtrack this year’s Juneteenth celebrations with the deluxe version of his debut album 'Black Book'. Arriving on June 17 via icons+giants, ‘Black Book DLUX’ is a timely natural continuation of BLKBOK’s critically-acclaimed debut as a composer, reflecting on pertinent social issues, with counterpoints, and sustaining a dialogue through his thought-provoking pieces. The package includes 11 new interstitial poems woven throughout the album, written and narrated by award-winning Jamaican poet Lauren Delapenha. Additionally, it features two new powerful singles “Kendrick + Karine” and “Forgotten Girls.” While touring the world as a pianist or musical director with the likes of Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, Timbaland and John Mayer, BLKBOK spent his private time composing his own original material, music that was inspired by his love of hip-hop and classical music. When the pandemic set in and touring came to a halt, he finalized these compositions which led to getting signed by icons+giants/WMG and releasing his first body of solo work, last year’s ‘Black Book.’ BLKBOK was inspired to create ‘Black Book’ as a tribute to the movie ‘Green Book’ and the courageous story of pianist/composer Don Shirley, whose trailblazing spirit helped open the door for black classical pianists of which there remains too few. The largely instrumental album features a standout vocal collaboration with Hamilton’s Tony and Grammy Award-winning Renée Elise Goldsberry on “My Life.” Provocative singles like “George Floyd and the Struggle for Equality,” “November 7th 2020” and “Michelle’s First Day At The White House” offer listeners unique perspectives of the social climate that we live in, and an opportunity to hear BLKBOK’s reflections of the world through the keys of the piano. Since releasing his debut album, BLKBOK has taken to social media weekly, while developing new work in real-time and challenging the way we listen to classical music. A 21st century black pianist equally infatuated with rappers like Busta Rhymes and The Notorious B.I.G., as well as the classical greats like Debussy, Mozart, and Bach, BLKBOK has gone viral on TikTok with his riveting neoclassical TikTok covers of Cardi B and Kendrick Lamar. On Instagram, he hosts a monthly “What's Goin' On” social series, where he develops new songs related to current cultural milestones and events, and offers an open forum for fans to share their feelings and discuss social issues. 10 Questions w/ Jesse Jo Stark About Cool Parents, the Awesomeness of Cher + Still Believing in Rock & Roll
Tumblr media
Other than maybe Sean Lennon and Jakob Dylan, Jesse Jo Stark grew up with surely the most inspirational people a future musician could possibly hope for. Indeed, her parents Richard Stark and Laurie Lynn Stark are the founders of rock & roll jewelry studio-turned-empire Chrome Hearts—whose clientele includes the likes of Bono, Elton John and Slash. And her Godmother is none other than the goddess of stage, screen and song Cher, who has been a continuing influence on her very talented niece.
Not just that, but she was sort of mentored from the start of her music career by Sex Pistol Steve Jones, who hosts the now legendary radio show Jonesy’s Jukebox in Los Angeles, where Jesse Jo also resides. And most recently, she appeared in the video for Brit punker YUNGBLUD’s new single “Strawberry Lipstick,” while corona had stranded him in LA.
But for all they may have rubbed off on her, the young Ms. Stark makes music that surely comes from somewhere deep within herself. Each song seems a little piece of her that she allows out into the world, revealing the inner intensity and intimacy that belie a very public persona.
Tumblr media
Her previous single, a cover of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery,” was a languid, fuzzed-out country gem of a ballad. But new track “Tangerine” is a mini-masterpiece of sorts, exhibiting her ease with crossing genres and weaving them seamlessly together. The twangy guitars are back, but there’s a little Beatles, a little widescreen Britpop, and just a hint of retro Cali dreaming as well. With its lush strings, and Stark’s haunted voice so full of longing, it vividly evokes so many life memories of love’s powerful pull.
For the video, she reached out to fans to create their own vision for the visual accompaniment to the song, and they were then edited together—a way of crossing the quarantine divide via the power of art. She describes it thusly:
“What I’ve missed most in this new way of livin’ has been the live shows and hanging out with everyone every night. So along with the ‘Tangerine’ track release, we thought it would be super sweet to get everyone involved in the video, so it’s almost like we’re all having this one big party together, no matter where we are in the world, physically we are together in heart. i’ve been at home watching everyone’s videos in full tears with the biggest smile wrapped around my face. everyone’s creativity and love for this song has been overwhelming. It makes my heart beat knowing that they can take away a little piece of ‘Tangerine’ and make it their own. it’s fucking beautiful. it’s art.”
We hit Jesse Jo with ten questions about all of the above, and as it turned out, even her answers were uniquely stylish.
youtube
Your influences are distinctly 1960s + ’70s. Do you feel a bit out of place in the current musical zeitgeist of hip-hop preeminence and so much over-glossed pop? my influences are not only 60’s and 70’s
and the thing about the current state of music right now is that there is nothing out of place. hip hop artists pull samples from old soul, country, and r&b records and it’s all turning into a place you can do anything you want. the only thing that pisses me off is when people chase chart positions by making the same shit over and over.
there is a difference between being out of place and making a place for yourself. so to answer. no i do not feel out of place. i feel like i’m right where i should be
What was some of the music you grew up listening to? my dad was always my go-to with music. he always played the clash, merle, john lennon, brian eno, david bowie on the way to school. with the occasional britney n christina.
i remember this one time,i think i was about 7 years old, he picked me up at my friend sasha’s house and i was throwing a fit because i didn’t want to leave. as we pulled out of the drive way he turned on “should i stay or should i go” by the clash. i had never heard it before. he looked at me and smiled and i felt my bad mood melt away. i remember thinking, as i tried my best to keep scowling at him, “i wanna make something this cool” . n i’m still tryin
What was it like growing up with rocker parents? Did that imprint on your personal aesthetic? are they rocker !? i mean i know they are pretty damn cool. everything about them has left a huge beautiful mark all over me. they are my favorite legends and they inspire me completely and truly .
On “Tangerine,” one can detect references to the The Beatles, Oasis, Patsy Cline, Mazzy Star…what has been your musical state of mind of late? what a major line up i wanna go to that show.
my musical state of mind has been to make more.
Tumblr media
Your music is very raw and seemingly unfussed over. Does inspiration find you in a mostly spontaneous fashion? oh it’s fussed . i am fussy . music for me is never just one thing. sometimes a song comes easy like it was layin on my night stand when i woke up. other times i feel like i have to cut my body open, drown in my tears and claw at the floor just to get one word out. inspiration is endless when you show up for it.
How did you come to work with YUNGBLUD? he called me n asked for me to be in his video . he said there’d be lips n latex. and so…
Cher is your godmother – has she been a mentor and influence? in every single way. i am in awe of her.
As opposed to those with batteries of stylists, you seem to really own your sense of style. Who are your fashion inspirations? my brother n sister, the cramps, cher, audrey hepburn, hands, animal print, love n london. i want to dress up like my favorite singers voices.
just like in every medium, i have people i’ve worked with forever. they’re my family. we understand each other. challenge each other and force each other to be brutally honest in the things we make.
i also love fresh eyes and ears and people that find new ways to look at the same things.
Is a full Jesse Jo Stark album on the horizon? it is n soon
Rock & roll as we know it seems to be on life support. What do you think is left for it? only if you aren’t lookin. there are so many insane bands in the world. some of my favorite bands now are kids my age. it isn’t dead. you just gotta find it.

Happy Pub Day to 808's and Otherworlds! "You cannot borrow my color. I am not a commodity. I am not a part song, cuss word or caged bird. I belong to no one. I name myself...wear myself. You sell me to make your money. You say I'm free, but you still owe me." I loved everything about this collection of poems, remixes and meditations. It was raw, honest and contemplative. There were parts that kicked me in the chest and made me pay attention. There were so many times I stopped to reread certain parts because the thoughts were so deep. The format of the book gave it a nice flow. The writing was the stand out for me. It was lyrical, speculative at times and magical. I really really related to Medlin's nerdy gamer, hip hop loving vibes. The author tackles themes through hip hop and media narratives. They explore: 🎧 Black masculinity and mental health 🎧 the commodification of Black culture and bodies 🎧 the misuse of hip hop by corporations to perpetuate narratives about Black culture 🎧 the concept of gender and roles 🎧 the trappings of idol worship and aspirations to perceived ideas of celebrity and status 🎧 what freedom looks and feels like when you question the staus quo 🎧 the diversity of Blackness The author's dissections of Kanye West songs and analysis of his persona were my favorites. They were insightful and really put words to what many have been thinking for a long time. If you are a nerdy, hip lover, then this book is for you. THIS HITS HARD! Medlin's words will continue to be bouncing around in my head. Hi! 3rd year marketing student here- I’m taking a PR class now which I’m loving so I’m actually considering this as a career post uni!! Any tips for getting started in PR and what kind of skills or connections can help you further your career?
That’s AWESOME. Welcome to the neighborhood. I can’t see myself doing anything other than PR. I totally love it. Every day is different and you always get to be creative. Diving in...
Skills:
Communication in all forms is key - writing, speaking. Even at a high level, I’m still writing strategy documents, press releases, pitches, emails to execs or media. It’s all so key to be able to clearly and concisely articulate. First impressions are truly everything, even in emails.
Become a media JUNKIE - you can’t guide clients unless you know the landscape. Read everything you can, watch tv for what news/shows are covering, listen to mainstream radio, subscribe to newsletters, follow media folks on twitter and insta. See what the media is interested in, how they cover things - it makes you better prepared to speak on strategy and pitch media better!
Learn the art of relationships and building authentic ones - most of this industry and the success truly revolves around who you know and how well you know them. I was able to get a client and his pet project a massive interview with a high tier level A media outlet that included an on-site, in-person chat along with an exclusive portrait sitting because not only was I pitching something good, but I had a fantastically great relationship with the writer. It’s never always what’s in it for me - never. I always check-in just because. I don’t just reach out when I need something or have to pitch a placement. Talk to them. Ask what else they’re working on, get to know them as people outside of work. Grab coffee, drinks, dinners, invite them to events if you can just because - not because you need something from them. Be authentic, be yourself. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. I am NOT the typical bitchy NY PR girl. That ain’t me. I’m not shady with folks, I’m not playing games. I’m honest, I have integrity and I truly care about the people I’m working with on the front lines of media. Do I need to gatekeeper for clients? Absolutely, but I’ll never lie to media. Ever. My blackbook is as stacked and deep as it is because I’ve never been anything other than myself. I liken myself to a concierge to media - my job is to make THEIR jobs as easy and as seamless as possible while serving to the best of my client.
Connections:
Start networking ASAP. Ask for informational interviews with PR professionals, with media - especially within the discipline of PR you want to get into. Get internships and experience as soon as you can. Ask to shadow folks if you can’t commit to a full internship time. Volunteer on campus to do PR/marketing for events there: music, sporting events, performances, guest speakers.
My first ‘gig’ was when I was in college - I help put myself through school as a sportswriter (a magazine and a website!) because I wanted to know what it was like on the media side of things so I could service media the best I could when I got into PR. It also gave me a massive network of connections as soon as I walked off campus and into my first PR gig, which happened to be in sports.
I hope this helps! Please always feel free to hit me with other questions or message me at any time. I’m a huge proponent of paying it forward with younger PR pros - I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of some amazing people along the way who helped foster my skills and teach me the ropes.
