“I have always wanted to tell my story, or, more to the point, my side of the story.” – Faith Ringgold.
Faith Ringgold is a painter, mixed media sculptor, performance artist, writer, teacher, and lecturer. Born 1930 in Harlem, New York, Ringgold began her artistic career as a painter in the 1950s.
During the early 1960s Ringgold traveled in Europe. She created her first political paintings, “The American People” Series from 1963 to 1967. This is when Ringgold began to tell “her side of the story” through her art - her lived experience with racial injustice as a black woman in the 1960s. The exhibition “American People, Black Light” showcased these  early paintings of the 1960s.
“James Baldwin had just published ‘The Fire Next Time,’ Malcom X was talking about us ‘loving our black selves,’ and Martin Luther King Jr. was leading marches and spreading the word. All over the country and the world people were listening to these black men. I felt called upon to create my own vision of the black experience we were witnessing … I had something to add—the visual depiction of the way we are and look. I wanted my painting to express this moment I knew was history. I wanted to give my woman’s point of view to this period.”
In addition to paintings, Ringgold also created soft sculptures, masks, and story quilts, for which she is best known today.

conversationswithjustice Sharing this because I’ve been seeing some misleading comparisons plastered on social media since yesterday. Be careful which data sets you’re looking at, and critically analyze if what you’re seeing is heavily weighted in one direction.

When They See Us - Blog Post #1
Hi! This TV series is heartbreaking yet very eye-opening. This show was based on true events that took place in 1989 when a woman was attacked and raped in central park. She was one of several people who were attacked that night by a mob of teenagers who entered the park and went on a spree of attacks. Five black and Latino teenagers were soon arrested and later convicted of the assault. Some served sentences of 6-12 years. It gained worldwide attention. Later, the falsely accused teens were exonerated and they sued New York City and won $41 million dollars, for their wrongful imprisonment.  At the time this event occurred racial profiling by police was not really in the public consciousness and this really brought that issue out into the light. I also think that the children/young adults of today's generation learned a lot from the show. Its cinematic thrill engaged the audience, but the facts and real-life details gave the audience a lesson in how black people were being treated then and how some still are.  The details talked about in the series make me question the whole foundation of our government and the legal system in general. The police on the case knew about another man who had physical DNA matching him to the crime. Yet this was ignored. This shows how determined the police were to make a conviction on five innocent kids just because they were kids of color. I think that this TV series is thought of to be an extreme case of racism taking place in our society but in reality, it is more common than one might think. I find it interesting that it took roughly ten years in prison before these teens were released. The teens who became adults during that time in prison had their life taken from them and only got it back after a white inmate, confessed to these crimes. This tv series was a good lesson, not only for the people of New York but people across the United States.
