the FIVE OF WANDS - today’s overall energy is playfighting.
Tumblr media
message. they want to give you a sexual challenge rather than indulging in a soft and hesitant mood: tease them right back and they’ll appreciate it. it’s all in good spirits as long as both play along. boldness is appreciated and keeps the chemistry running.
no need to fear conflict, this is all friendly banter without the intent of hurting. behind all of that is the idea of testing limits + experimenting sexually through fun and activity rather than keeping it a guessing game what the other person might like.

Oh hot damn… Lucky in Love or Drunk in Love are the type of lyrics I’m getting from this. Nothing prevents them from thirsting over you lmao but it’s a good thing! Because they’re confident in liking you so. Damn. Much. And they know you like them back. What a secure lover this person is becomes apparent in their ambitions: They reflect dedication. Meanwhile, they’ve got a balance of mature and outgoing/youthful energy alike. And I feel like they really went from being serious in your presence to just letting it all out! Good for them, because they’re on a roll since they met you slash made contact.
The main kink I’m seeing here is teacher and student, hands down. They are seriously into pretending there’s a difference in power, authority, knowledge, age, looks, all of that. Doesn’t have to be real, it can be roleplay, but they do consider you to be someone to look up to. They pleasure themselves like mad to those thoughts, honestly. The Daddy or Mommy kink is real in this one because whew, QUEEN + EMPEROR? That’s a big deal. You two are either two bold personalities coming together (or they fantasize about that, some major powerplay) or they identify you as that person who pulls all of their strings with little to no effort. Far from intimidated, they are ready to learn and enjoy because they’re your babe.
This person is not a starfish though. Happily under your spell, I can see them quite actively horny because wow Pile 1, their sex drive is just impressive, to say the least. Not scattered, just very strong in general. And they see you just like that as well. They know you are in charge, they feel that you’ll handle the shit out of them without hesitating. Boss of their body is what I’m hearing! Not an inch will belong to anybody else. They love how madly possessive they are.
At the same time, they also think you can learn together, it’s not so set in stone. I like that contrast in the cards. Sovereignty and mature sex versus being carefree and raunchy like a student party. Like they want you to pounce on them and dominate their every cell, but they also want to be your cute little pet to fool around with. I get the impression that this person worships the hell out of you and thinks you’re the best in bed, no matter your degree of experience. That’s the thing, they would be happy with a virgin and a sexpert alike, as I said they hardly care! Because you charmed them and made your standpoint clear! Even if you have a hot VERSUS stone-cold demeanor and sex appeal, they feel inspired by that.
Your sexual energies complement each other well I feel. In their mind, you could top them so easily. They gladly submit to an orgy of pleasure. I think they trust you a lot, they just want to lose control and be chased. They won’t chase you! You’re too prideful and want to set this up on your own terms. This relationship is yours to create, they won’t interfere. They’re too starstruck and want to gather their resources first, only to find out you’re tremendous fun to be with and they had nothing to worry about.
You are the sun of their universe Pile 1, you seduced them so much. If only you would boss them around, they want it so badly. This scenario could be a total clash of titans since you are both a total smokeshow in your own ways.  They looked at you and wanted you to open up, leave the stiff old life behind and feel younger again. Since you’re so foxy to them, they treat you like the bombshell you are, with lots of reverence and respect. I’m even getting service sub vibes from your person, Pile 1, they’ll just do whatever you ask `em like you’re royalty, long as it’s consensual of course, but I don’t get any toxic fantasies from this pile, just very dom-sub centered ones.

pile ii - ACE OF CUPS „i’m your lover in plain sight“
⌈ EIGHT OF SWORDS - KNIGHT OF WANDS - 6 OF COINS - PAGE OF CUPS
Tumblr media
Whirlwind kind of romance right here, lots of ups and downs in their anxious mind. You left them feeling powerless to all the energy they perceive you to so blazingly have, Pile 2. They were thunderstruck by your presence, were frozen on the damn spot. Tied. Up. Which leads us to the card imagery, by the way. Bondage fantasies is a huge theme here. I’m just sayin’… That’s their sexual fantasy when they think of you. If you’d blindfold them, or try something like knife play, even (as the swords card indicates), that would get them going so much. Despite their freaky imagination, ironically they are the mellow one, while you are the fiery counterpart that doles it all out to them in their wet dreams.
As contradictory as it sounds, reciprocating and giving back is the dynamic here, though. For instance, if you bought stuff for them, they’d be so happy and fawn over you like wild. Since this is a rollercoaster ride, however… I can’t quite tell what exactly their constant feelings are for you, Pile 2, as they are just so changeable. From no sex drive to reckless abandon to self-control to begging to being a fool in love. What a journey they’ve been through because of you. You make them feel all of this, and they’re saying thank you.
One day they want to be controlled by you, the other, they want to unleash their passion without any help and do their own dance to impress you. They have an edge but they’re romantic, they’re hopeless and they’re hot shit, they’re fair and then such a tease giving you less than you deserve, full well knowing it will keep you hooked and coming for them like an avalanche.
They want you rushing to their home like it's the firefighters. Because well, well… they’re feeling way too hot, aren’t they. At the same time, that’s the puzzling thing, they also want you to keep them at an arm’s length. If you aren’t confused about this person yet, at this point, you gotta be: Which mirrors them, in fact. They don’t quite know what they want consistently, you left them too dumbfounded to understand the situation for sure. Pile 2, this individual is head over heels for you.
Now this starstruck person dreams about being acted upon by you and they love that. Pillow prince/ss is what I’m seeing all over the spread, they have that receptive energy for the most part. They might be a little unruly once they get out of their comfort zone or don’t feel like they’re acknowledged by you (they might as well have a come-save-me fantasy… do them a favor and help them out). But when they do get signals, they are back in love romantically, yes, not so much sexually, they’re touchy-feely like crazy. Just when they felt like roaming free before! If there’s some hunter-prey fantasy going on here I wouldn’t be surprised, they want to keep you on your toes.
As I said, you get the best of both worlds Pile 2, your person is not the predictable type. Maybe that’s why you like `em. They are flirts and then they’re not. They want rough sex and then they want affection little by little. But the final note in their mind is always this: They want you to glued to them, to go wild for them, to witness them like a fish in the water: Through requited love. All they want is to be asked out and live their dreamy, sensitive love. Confusing you is not their intention. Don’t forget they just want love at the end of the day.

pile iii - JUSTICE „i’m the one you deserve“
⌈ KNIGHT OF COINS - PAGE OF SWORDS - THE SUN - THE EMPRESS
Tumblr media
What started out as a sensual, stable connection which didn’t go down in flames of horniness now turned their head into a mush. Which then turned into them bursting with vitality! An online message of yours shook them up, or something you said. But in a positive way, because they’re so happy now. Romantic, personal, sexual bliss, they’re feeling so good about themselves because of you, the dull days are over. What a mood boost you gave them, and they’re confident in their looks because of your steady presence/communication, oh my word.
Because you started out easygoing and then picked up speed, they are absolutely feeling themselves like it’s nobody’s business. I’m so happy for you, Pile 3, because your person is just prancing around like a child after you’ve been frank with them. Talking it out was so needed. Approaching it from a headspace was. Being chatty with them made your person super hot and bothered, too. Hell, they are totally into your voice, the way you take your time when you walk, the way you carry yourself, how you dress up, the way your hair is tousled (if you wear it longer), how you treat yourself, how you choose your words, and how you smile especially.
At first, they were so scared how serious and single-minded you came across. Now they’re blushing and sweating their ass off because you said what you said and you paid attention to them! When they thought they were the knight in shining armor, you gave them a reality check and dodged the bullet, stood your ground instead of playing helpless — which worked in their favor not to get their hopes up and invest right away. That’s how you made this person’s libido explode. But in a good, wholesome way.
This proper mix of humor and the crazy slow burn (!) between the two of you has them going nuts without actually making them crazy, you know? Just healthy adoration and warmth they feel. I get the impression your person has lots of sexual stamina, Pile 3. They know what they’re doing, y’all… they might come across as a total sunshine, but they are, oh my word. Fertile as hell, go all the way, ready to make those babies and live the good life. In this economy? Your person thinks so, who am I to judge, they want that settling down and parenthood. They just know you’d be good at raising kids. But without compromising the mental stimulation, which you give them consistently.
And because you’re such a hottie with charm and good looks, they’re at your feet. You rule them! Your sex appeal has their pretty head spinning, their routine is broken, they can’t get enough of you, they want this in-depth (literally!). For long, they fantasized about having carefree sex with you out in nature, wild and free. Never too much of a good thing with you. You’re so juicy to them, graceful, steamy, gorgeous, you seem to have it all in their eyes.
They think you have elevated status or just carry yourself in a way that shows your life is fulfilled and abundant. Oh hell, what don’t they like about you. Maybe you can be too direct and frank at times? They prefer your magnanimous, silly, soft, giving, cute’n’comfy side. They need to be taken care of a little, or need your cheer-ups. Because they want to take it easy, and not have conflict and difficulty in communication. Healthy, loving, and lasting (!) sexuality is the gist of this, I’m thinking. Quite Venusian of them, I see their sexual thoughts as Libra/7th house or Taurus/2nd house-themed. An all-around feel-good reading, Pile 3, I love the positive cards you got.

Hi! Medium time listener (I followed after slarpg altered my brain chemistry), first timer asker! What is your process when it comes to composing for games? Is it any different when the subject changes (personal, commission, etc)?
hehehe, well i hope that alteration was a positive one! 😋
so i think there's kind of two sides to this: there's the creative process, and the collaborative process.
The Creative Process
my creative process is actually pretty similar whether i'm working on contract or for personal enjoyment.
first, i consider:
the needs of the prompt in front of me (is it a save menu or a boss battle? is it a tense scene is or a tender one?)
how it should fit into the bigger picture of the whole project (mood/tone, genre, leitmotifs, instrumentation, production style, etc)
what tools i will need to use (subtractive synth or sampler or soundfont or live recording?)
then, i typically write what i call a "skeleton:" just the barest bones of a piece of music. i almost always do this on piano, dividing the bass, harmony, and melody into very distinct registers. i do it this way for several reasons learned the hard way:
first, by dividing parts into clearly delineated registers, i'm saving myself a whole lot of trouble down the line. i have long had a bad habit of over-crowded arrangements, which besides being weaker from a composition standpoint, are also notoriously difficult to mix. and mixing is already hard enough as it is! so writing a strong and well balanced composition from the outset is the best way to go.
second: when you jump into arranging or mixing before the whole piece is written, it's much easier to get stuck. where should i take this track next? i dunno, guess i'll fiddle with the mix. suddenly a week's gone by and i'm still working on a half-written track. if i require myself to write the whole piece out first, then this bottleneck is almost always eliminated.
sometimes you can get really excited about an idea, get carried away with arranging and producing a whole track, get to feeling really attached to it—only for your collaborator to say it's just not the right direction. by limiting myself to one instrument, i don't put in a disproportionate amount of work before confirming whether or not the piece is actually a good fit. and bonus, if it's not a good fit then i have a piece of music written that can serve another project later (or another part of the current project, if i'm lucky)!
of course, i'm not always perfect about this. even very recently, i got really stoked about a track i was cooking up for susan taxpayer and went BANANAS with it—only for punkitt to say she loved it but it wasn't at all the right vibe. a hard but necessary reminder of why i try not to get carried away prematurely!
(don't worry, the one i made to replace it fit like a glove, and the first attempt is gonna be used elsewhere. love wins 😌)
once i do have confirmation that i'm headed in the right direction with an idea though, that's where i really get into it with choosing instruments, designing synths, figuring out the production style, etc. and there's where the real back-and-forth with my collaborator begins, to make sure things are staying on track every step of the way. that leads us to:
The Collaborative Process
for starters, and probably most obviously, different people are different to work with. everyone has different strengths and challenges both creatively and interpersonally, so i try to meet my collaborator where they're at and tune in to their specific needs, vision, and communication style. within reason, i try not to look at these things as being "better" or "worse" with one person versus another, just different!
i think the biggest differences for me as far as how much time and energy i invest into a project are A) whether it's paid or pro bono, and B) my own level of personal excitement about the project.
if i'm doing something purely for fun, it's pretty exclusively because i'm really hyped about the project. because, well, it wouldn't be fun if i weren't, right? and in that situation, i enjoy giving it my all! susan taxpayer falls firmly into this category, and i'm having a blast with it.
SLARPG started out pretty similarly, but as the scope of the project grew, it evolved into more of a pro bono arrangement; bobby and i drafted up a contract and negotiated on how we would split earnings from the game once it released, and that's where i've gotten the vast majority of my income this year. it remained a passion project til the end, but i could not in good conscience put that much of my life into a project of that size unpaid, no matter how much i loved it! (maybe one day, if we collectively defeat capitalism and i no longer have to worry about such things... 🥲)
things get a bit different when you get into strictly contract work, though. when it's something i'm doing for a client who's paying from the start and it's not for my own enrichment, i have more hard and fast boundaries on how much of myself i put into the project. i have specific rates, and offer only so many free revisions before charging additional fees. sure, i can be horribly particular and will revise something a bazillion times to get it "just right" if i'm working on a passion project, but i'm not about to do that for like. a corporate commercial or whatever lol
whether it's for fun or all business, though, i always try to make something i'm proud of. because i want whomever i collaborate with to have something they're happy with in the end, of course! plus i'm kind of allergic to phoning it in, i'm too extra for that 😜
________________
i'm sure i could go on, but i think i'll leave it at that! pardon the slow response, it took me some time to formulate my thoughts for this one. thanks for the question, and take care ^^ 🎵

Intimacy & Emotional Attachments (Ep5)
Andddd the next entry in this series: Ep5 marks some serious headway and some serious setbacks for the couples. Emotional and physical intimacy is challenged and put into question in ways we haven't seen before, sending us spiraling towards the first arc conflict (in keeping with what Khaotung said, we're definitely going to hit a lot of chaos next ep). Interestingly, I believe all three couples balance physical and emotional intimacy in vastly different ways.
RaySand
Ray and Sand take center stage this episode, specifically Sand, who is finally given the narrating voice. I could write a separate post on Sand alone, because I think his character traits offer a lot of insight into why he's grown so attached to Ray already (as others have pointed out, Ray is cheeky and flirtatious, but he's also a bit of a handful...despite Sand's complaints though, he seems to enjoy being at Ray's service). Personally, while Ray's approach has been questionable in the past (stalking Sand, bribing him to spend time with him, etc.), I personally don't think his behavior towards Sand can be considered a manipulation...at least, not in the way that Boston has manipulated Nick. I could speak more on the subject but that's my opinion, for now.
Tumblr media
One thing I really like about Ray and Sand in terms of their growing bond--it's all in the quiet moments. Virtually all of RaySand's scenes have small acts of intimacy and crippling sweetness; they possess a natural banter. I would argue that TopMew, by comparison, are very straightforward. There's much less subtlety, and I think this is because Mew is making so much of an effort to keep everything controlled; it’s slightly mechanical.
I have to give it up for FK's acting here because so much of Ray and Sand’s relationship depends on their swift delivery. They play off of each other seamlessly to deliver electrifying chemistry. While we might have been robbed of Khao's tattoo (still bitter about that, tbh), the tension in that scene is simmering nonetheless.
It's become more and more apparent throughout these five episodes that Ray and Sand aren't built on just one thing. This is a matter of personal opinion, but I see Ray and Sand's relationship as encompassing a pretty reliable split between the physical and emotional aspects of intimacy; conversely, I'd argue that Top and Mew's relationship has focused on the emotional parts (mostly due to Mew's resistance to a sexual relationship with Top) and BostonNick's has focused on the physical parts (due to Boston's resistance to pursuing a romantic relationship with Nick). Once again, the goldilocks effect is kicking in: RaySand are solidly in the middle when it comes to balancing both physical and emotional intimacy.
Tumblr media
Also of note--Ray and Sand talk about their personal lives onscreen, whereas we are left to imply many of the deeper conversations going on between Top and Mew (I don't think there are too many of those going on for Boston and Nick). Ray opens up about his mother's death in a way he didn't before, and I think that's one of the surest signs of how much he's growing to depend on Sand. From a storytelling standpoint, it's also important that Sand knows this, as it will likely inform his reactions to Ray going forward.
The greatest threat to RaySand's bond at this point are Ray's lingering feelings for Mew because they are so easily exploited by Boston. Boston is the enemy of RaySand this episode, certainly, but everything he says would not pack so much of a punch if not for Ray's reaction. He quickly gets physical, reaching for the liquor bottle as if on instinct. Ray has developed a bond with that liquor bottle that no one, not even Mew, has been able to match.
TopMew
This next bit is prompted by a discussion @abstractelysium and I had about Top and Mew's reactions to Boston and Ray, respectively, regarding consent. In Ep4, Mew automatically censured Ray for kissing him, while Top has repeatedly vocalized his discomfort with Boston's advances since the beginning, though it wasn't until last episode that we saw him really take a stand against Boston. Top is still something of an enigma when it comes to sex; it's used as "payment" of a sort from Mew, and we know that Top enjoys having many sexual encounters. (Some have suggested that Top has had some negative experiences with sex as well, potentially along the lines of SA, but I personally don't believe we can draw any conclusions as of yet.)
The way Top and Mew react to Boston and Ray in Ep4 is the interesting bit, because it reflects their beliefs regarding boundaries and morals. The show has used consent not only to make a point about it's importance, but also to highlight the traits of its characters. Mew's perspective is clear-cut and decisive--whether or not he personally felt violated is not the point; it's the act of being kissed while he was asleep that offends him.
Part of the reason why Mew has withheld sex from Top for so long is because in his mind, intimacy is delicate. Top views sex casually, independent of emotions, but Mew sees much more than that. The show has made a point of showing how sex, even casual sex, often comes to mean much more. For this reason, Mew's reaction to Ray is proof that intimacy--and sex, by extension--is something to be treated with extreme care.
Tumblr media
What's also interesting is that Mew is willing to give Top limited intimacy as an exchange for something he wants. Is this indicating that he is already slipping into the same "game" that has a hold on Top and, perhaps even more strongly, Boston? Is Mew's high regard for sex the exact kind of weaponry that he can use to force Top into line? I'd argue that Mew has gradually been learning the rules of this "game" and it's one of the reasons why he takes the initiative to offer sex to Top so long as he promises to stop doing drugs. I still think Mew cherishes sex, but I do believe he sees its import in changing Top's behavior...so why wouldn't he exploit that?
In Ep5 we see him commit to sex with Top, but there's still an underlying tension to it. So far, Mew has seemed completely in control of his relationship with Top, but it's almost sad how vulnerable he acts on the phone with Boston. It's hard to determine what's genuine and what's all part of the game. Judging by his lovesick behavior this episode, I'm going to argue that whether or not he thinks it's "owed" to Top or not, he's finally giving some of his vulnerability over to Top. In my mind, that is what all of this boils down to: vulnerability. (I will agree with what others have said about the dinner scene though--there's something quite eery about it that I can't put my finger on.)
Tumblr media
It's ironic that next episode is when things will presumably blow up between Top and Mew in some fashion. How sad will it be for Mew to have finally given himself over to Top, just to immediately realize that Top lied to him and cheated on him with one of his friends? The drama will be so juicy.
BostonNick
Nearly every character in this show lies, whether to hide their feelings or to manipulate other characters. Out of everyone though, Boston takes the cake. As an audience member, I have learned not to trust a single word he says (no matter how many times he bats his eyelashes at Nick).
Nick is trying so desperately to become what Boston wants, even if he doesn’t want to change himself. He realizes that, yet he doesn't stop. He left his self-worth at the door for Boston, because he craves affection, and—when Boston wants to—he's good at delivering it.
Tumblr media
Boston tells Nick that he wants to settle down. But does he really? For my part, I don't think Boston could settle down if his life depended on it--he'd still find a way to manipulate his way into a) sleeping around and/or b) screwing up everybody else's relationships. When it comes to intimacy, I believe Boston enjoys sex for two reasons (one, more deep than the other):
It's just...good? He definitely enjoys it, otherwise he would've stopped a long time ago.
It's a way for him to wield power. He can manipulate others and put himself on a pedestal with just how many men want him (I choose to believe that Boston looks at himself in the mirror every night and congratulates himself on how perfect he is).
For this reason, I don't think Boston really knows what emotional intimacy is. He's a master of physical intimacy in terms of sex alone, but he hasn't come close to mastering its emotional elements--mostly because he hasn't even tried. He tells Nick that he wants to try settling down, but how much of that is genuine, and how much of that is because he's still butthurt over Top's rejection?
Tumblr media
For now, Boston's relationship to intimacy seems to revolve around stringing Nick along and ruining everyone else's chances at forming intimate bonds. It's another power play. If Boston isn't literally screwing them, he's busy thinking of ways to screw them over.
~ X ~
Ep 5 was a rough one for my heart to handle. All of Ray and Sand's happy moments were overshadowed by the ending scene, TopMew's scenes were overshadowed by Top's lies, and BostonNick's scenes were overshadowed by Boston's assholery. I expect next episode will throw everything into complete chaos.

Heyo, Lady Oscar! I'm excited to see what you have to share! I'll do a separate ask for each character (six in total), to keep things simple.
So for this first ask... well, I have to start with Kuvira, of course~
Okay! Let’s do the thing starting with my main girl, Kuvira. *cracks knuckles*
Tumblr media
1. Sexuality headcanon
I've been headcanoning Kuvira as bisexual since I began writing fanfics about her. I personally don't see Baatar Jr. as a beard in their relationship because she seemed to sincerely care about him in canon (until she didn't, lol!) I also don't buy the comphet argument because IMHO, it doesn't fit her personality. I think she's demiromantic, and specifically with Asami and Baatar Jr. I can see her as sapiosexual. She surrounded herself with three intelligent people in the likes of Baatar Jr, Varrick and Zhu Li (and a token himbo, Bolin) on her inner circle so I believe she has a thing for intelligence. Fandom usually headcanons her as a top or dom but I see her more of a switch, especially with Asami and Korra, and between them it's pretty much an endless battle for dominance in the bedroom. 😏
I also lowkey ship her with Mako who I also headcanon as bi so it’s a Bi4Bi scenario, and in this case she’s more of a top because I do agree with the headcanon that Mako is more of a bottom. Fun fact: her voice actress Zelda Williams is bi, as it is Janet Varney, Korra’s VA.
2. OTP
Oooh, this is a tough one because although OTP stands for “One True Pairing” I ship her pretty much equally with both Asami and Korra. With Korra, I indulge in the angsty, dramatic side of things. They have so many parallels that are ingrained in canon that it makes for an interesting exercise to explore the ways they resemble each other and in the ways their differences serve to complement and balance each other. It’s basically a lot of “the sunshine who can kill you and the badass who can kill you” relationship meme with these two. 🤣
Tumblr media
With Asami I play on “what if” canon divergence scenarios which make for more lighthearted and flirty situations. They make for such an amazing power couple that is just too darned good. Plus their sexual chemistry is off the roof, a “can’t keep their hands off each other” kind of chemistry that's way too much fun. 😉
3. BROTP
Although he's the romantic interest in canon, I headcanon Junior as more of a second in command/partner in crime than as significant other material and they’re very much BROTP in my stories. Jinora is my other candidate as BROTP for Kuvira in a Republic City setting because Kuvira is a jock/dancer/soldier who is also cunning, smart, and well versed in strategy,  so I can see her bonding with Jinora over books and history. And of course, my beloved Lin Beifong and Kuvira would bond by swapping stories and gossip about Suyin, and boy I bet they both have a lot to talk about Su. I think they would realize they have more in common than they think since they’re both the type to bottle up their emotions and to put their work before everything else, and they both wanted to impress their maternal figures. Lin would be an excellent mentor and friend for Kuvira, since Lin won't take crap from anyone so shr would keep Kuvira in the straight and narrow with her no nonsense attitude.
4. NOTP
I basically don’t ship her with any of the Beifongs but the big NOTP for me is Suyin. I just can’t shake the mentor/protege relationship off my mind to see them even remotely romantic. From an objective standpoint, I can see the appeal with all their drama but it's a big nope for me.
5. First headcanon that pops into my head?
She’s a sleepwalker. Her childhood trauma manifested in sleepwalking which was pretty severe during her first years with the Beifongs but she grew out if it gradually as she grew up. Following the events of Book 4 and Ruins of the Empire which ends with her in house arrest, her sleepwalking came back but not as bad as when she was a child, which it’s fortunate because I can’t imagine the mess she would leave behind while bending in her sleep. 😱
6: favorite line from this character
"I owe the Avatar my life. Her power is beyond anything I could ever hope to achieve. I'll accept  whatever punishment the world sees fit”.
This is from The Last Stand. Although the entire scene with Korra and Kuvira in the Spirit World is amazing since we get to witness Kuvira’s emotional breakdown, it's in her surrender that we see what we can consider the beginning of her path toward redemption, meaning that her story is not over yet.
7. One way in which I relate to this character
We're both familiarized with military service and the concept of discipline and service to the nation since I also served. I also relate in the need to prove ourselves, something that is evident in the way she ends up emulating her mentor Suyin and in having strained relationships with siblings, like the one she had with Opal. Come to think of it, having strained relationships with siblings seems like a very Beifong thing to do. 🤔
8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character
The whole having her foster brother end up as her fiancee thing is kinda weird so I totally get Opal when she was all weirded out with the news of their engagement.
9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?
Both! 🤣

Irish Wish Review: A Fantasy Filled with Love and Laughter
Tumblr media
Irish Wish, the latest offering from director Janeen Damian, beckons us into a realm where the fantastical meets the all-too-familiar whirlwind of romantic emotions. Starring Lindsay Lohan, who has seemingly found a cozy niche with Netflix following their prior collaboration, this fantasy romantic comedy unfolds against the lush backdrop of Ireland, promising a mix of magic, mirth, and misadventures. With a script penned by Kirsten Hansen, the film aims to strike a delicate balance between the whimsical and the profound, wrapped in the comforting blanket of love stories we have come to cherish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gKXowSyfjM Lohan, returning to the genre that has cherished her, embodies Madeline "Maddie" Kelly with a palpable sense of authenticity and vulnerability. When Maddie's heart gets shattered by the news of her lifelong love marrying her best friend, she opts for grace, diving into the bridesmaid role with a heavy heart in Ireland, the land of legends and leprechauns. The plot takes a mystical turn when Maddie, caught in a moment of desperation, voices a wish for true love, only to find herself in an alternate reality as the bride. Ed Speleers as James Thomas and Alexander Vlahos as Paul Kennedy navigate their roles with commendable charm. Each actor presents a different love archetype that Maddie finds herself entangled with. The chemistry is palpable and occasionally sizzles, although at times it feels as though the narrative does not fully explore these dynamics to their fullest potential. Ayesha Curry, Elizabeth Tan, and the ever-elegant Jane Seymour add depth to the ensemble, bringing humor, wisdom, and a touch of sassiness that enriches the narrative fabric of Irish Wish. The film's captivating Irish setting showcases sprawling landscapes and quaint villages. It's a character in its own right, offering a visual feast that elevates the film's fairy-tale quality. The locale also integrates seamlessly with the film’s thematic elements. It underscores the idea that love, much like the Irish countryside, is wild, unpredictable, and breathtakingly beautiful. However, Irish Wish doesn't escape certain pitfalls common to the genre. The plot, for all its magical twists, occasionally treads into the realm of predictability. The contrived central conflict weakens the narrative's potential for greatness. The movie lightly explores themes of self-discovery and fate, leaving a desire for a deeper exploration. The movie's heart and humor, however, are undeniable. Lohan shines in her role, captivating audiences with her warmth and wit. Her nuanced performance showcases her ability to anchor a film with charisma and talent. The supporting cast also delivers, providing a balanced mix of levity and gravitas that propels the story forward. From a technical standpoint, Irish Wish benefits from Janeen Damian's direction. It maintains a brisk pace and a light touch, ensuring that the film's fantastical elements feel grounded in emotional truth. The soundtrack serves as an effective emotional and atmospheric complement to the on-screen action. The film excels at depicting the complexity of love within a wish-fulfillment fantasy, without avoiding real emotions. It celebrates the idea that finding true love involves both magical and painful moments. Irish Wish is a comforting, enjoyable addition to the romantic comedy genre. It offers escapism without straying too far from emotional authenticity. Its charm lies in its familiar tropes, heartfelt performances, and the scenic beauty of Ireland. The film is a reminder that sometimes, a little dose of magic and laughter is just what we need. Lindsay Lohan and the cast bring to life a tale as inviting as an Irish pub on a cold day. It might not offer any surprises, but its warmth and cheer are more than enough to warrant a visit. Read the full article

When it comes to romantic relationships, I’m intense as a sx Dom. (Had to go through all your posts again to finally figure it out! Thank you for doing multiple instincts posts!)
I wanted to know what you feel in general is a good match for sx dominant energy? Another sx or do they need someone with a sx secondary to balance them out?
I was also curious from a theoretical standpoint as I know that it’s all about chemistry etc, what enneagram types have the most potential for highest compatibility pairing based on their cores?
You will be most compatible with someone who has at least one of your subtypes, because otherwise you will not understand what drives each other at all (if you are sx/so, for example, you need them to either possess so or sx). Relationships are hard enough without having a basic "need" shared by your partner.
Beyond that, I'm not going to point you in any particular direction, because the answer is that there's no magic formula for success in a relationship -- any relationship works if both people are committed to ensuring it stays fresh and fun. Telling you to go find this or that type would set you up for disappointment if it didn't work out and possibly cause you to miss out on something good. Look for chemistry, but also decide what you VALUE in a partner, and choose someone who fits that criteria. And don't forget to be the kind of person that attracts the traits you find desirable in a partner!

★,。・:*:・゚☆ character update q4 2021 ★☆ (gif credit.)
what are your muse’s current goals and motivations? yushin’s goal is to ensure that he improves in every aspect of his current position in agito and continue his growth, no matter which direction it brings him in. he means his in both performance and chemistry with the other members, especially his roommate and dormmates. he doesn’t have any plans to continue in acting, but does wish to remain relevant in vna and continue to become a better rapper, despite also loving singing. he doesn’t mind giving up lines if it means the proper balance from the producer standpoint with all the other members. yushin would like more commercials if he can nab anymore of those, in order to bring get more brand recognition for agito and himself. being in agito despite not going through future dreams is more than what he could ask for, after his short-lived musical acting career.  do you think your muse has accomplished any of their goals mentioned above? if so, how did they do it? if not, what do you think could help them accomplish that goal? continuing to practice, especially in areas where he’s lacking in the group. he believes he’s currently the worst dancer out of them all, so he does want to improve on that aspect, and improve on his performance and image. its a slow progression but everyday of more hours put into practice is helping every day.  also, in the beginning he might not have known all the members of vna as much as he’d like, other than a handful of the boys, but in his time with haru and jiho, especially jiho, they’ve became better friends throughout their time during pre-debut. granted, he already knew shinha very well, it was pleasant to have a friend prior to the conception of the group even though yushin knows it wouldn’t be too difficult to get immersed into the dynamics of the group. thankfully, they get along for the most part. other than when there’s a surprise bug that shows up in their dorms, or something like that...  describe one significant memory that has happened to your muse during this trimester (positive or negative). yushin thinks this trimester has been the biggest change for him. the career change definitely spun him into a world where he was completely doubtful of himself, and unsure if that’s what he wanted to do. there was a part of him that said forego the singing, and just go into acting, but the truth is being a musical acting was so diverse, and he loved both the acting, but moreso the singing and performing part of musical acting. without the singing, it felt.... wrong. no offense to the traditional actor, but that’s just not his style. when the opportunity came from the company for him to be considered for the lineup of a new group, yushin leapt at the chance, and it went from being one of the lowest lows in his career thus far, to the peak.  what is one thing you (as the mun) have learned about your muse throughout this trimester? i’ve learned that i’m really attached to him?! after my up & downs with my muses, and yushin being the only one at one point that i had, especially while writing this today, i’m truly glad i kept him as my muse, because despite losing the musical acting route, i didn’t know what was coming for him, even if it meant doing more trainee missions. i’ve learned more about him and i’m trying to get more social with plotting with people (when i’m not busy being.. busy. sorry in advance.) i’ve learned yushin is pretty adaptable because i never foresaw him getting into a group or becoming a rapper, but in the end, that’s exactly what happened so....! here we go.

fave dr ships and why?? :0
Hmm, that’s a pretty fun question! There are so many fun character interactions in each game that there’s a lot of ships I really like, so I’ll try to briefly just touch on some of my favorites in each game!
There aren’t really any spoilers in my reply, but I’m going to include a read-more anyway because even trying to keep it brief, there were a lot of ships to cover, so it still got pretty long.
In dr1, I honestly really love naegiri. Naegi gets a lot of flack for “not being interesting enough” or “not bringing anything to the table,” but I think he worked really well as the protagonist for the first installment of the series, and I absolutely think he and Kirigiri have a lot of great chemistry. Kirigiri and Naegi’s relationship is all about finding a balance between doubt and belief, and both of them really help each other grow as people. I think their dynamic is at its best in the first game, since Kirigiri gets so much time to shine and really feels more like the deuteragonist of the series than anyone else. Plus watching Naegi try to learn how to read her stoic façade when she’s really quite emotional under the  surface is so much fun.
I’m also a huge fan of aoisakura. I love everything about their interaction, and chapter 4 of dr1 is still one of the best in the whole series in my opinion. Both of them care so much about each other even from early on, and Aoi’s anger at how the others treat Sakura or talk about her like she’s hardly even a person comes across as so legitimate. It’s such a great and largely underrated ship, so I always love to see it.
I also have to say that I like kirizono quite a lot! They don’t have much in the way of interaction in canon, considering how early Maizono dies, but it’s one of those ships where I’m much more interested in the overall potential. Kirigiri seems to have a very good grasp of what Maizono was actually like as a person and what she might have been thinking in her final moments. While she uncovers the truth of the events of chapter 1, she doesn’t see Maizono as irredeemable for tricking Naegi, but merely as someone who was scared and who ultimately couldn’t go through with her own plan. She knew that Maizono was trying to help Naegi in her own way by leaving him a dying message, and I would have loved to see a detective-and-assistant duo with Kirigiri and Maizono in some alternate universe.
Other ships from dr1 that I enjoy even if I’m not super invested in them from an analysis standpoint are celesgiri (how could I not ship the original liar and detective), naekusaba (DR IF really sold me on this one), ishimondo (all around a solid, great ship), and naegami (honestly I just think the idea of Kirigiri and Togami both dating Naegi but barely tolerating each other as friends is really funny).
Sdr2 is probably the game where I wound up the least invested in shipping, but there are still a few that I like!
Hinanami isn’t quite as appealing to me as naegiri, mostly due to Nanami being used twice for Hinata’s character development, but they have some really cute moments that I do enjoy a lot, and I really love any interaction between the two of them as gamer friends. Nanami is so much more mischievous than most people give her credit for; I still can’t help remembering when I replayed sdr2 a year or two ago and got to the part with her threatening to poke Hinata’s eyes out during an investigation, and I nearly lost my shit because I didn’t remember it at all from previous playthroughs.
I’m not quite as invested in komahina as I thought I would be when I first got into DR, but I definitely don’t mind it either! I think Komaeda’s feelings for Hinata are pretty textual and undeniable; lines like “I’m in love with the hope that’s sleeping inside you” are impossible, in my opinion, to handwave as “just a friend thing,” and Megumi Ogata has all but stated outright that her character song for Komaeda is specifically about Hinata.
Of course, I definitely think Komaeda would need to work on a lot of his internalized ideas about talent and self-worth, and that he and Hinata would have to start as friends first before carrying their relationship into anything romantic, but if their really cute interation in ndrv3’s talent development plan is anything to go off of, I think Hinata definitely does want to help Komaeda value himself more and wants to be friends with him.
As for other ships that I enjoy more casually, I like twobuki (if that’s even what people are still calling Twogami/Impostor and Ibuki as a ship), sondam (all of Sonia’s nerding out about Gundam’s chuunibyou interests is honestly super adorable), nanamiki (I feel like Nanami and Mikan could honestly have a cute dynamic if Mikan weren’t under Junko’s influence), and… I actually have no idea for this ship name, but Impostor/Hinata is really sweet. This is more related to dr3, but one of the few things I did come out feeling positively about was Impostor/Mitarai, despite everything else about how the story turned out.
Finally, there’s ndrv3! There’s quite a lot of ships I really love here, so it’s actually a little hard to narrow it down.
I hardly think I need to mention saiouma at this point, since it’s the ship I talk about the most on this blog, but it’s still my favorite ship from pretty much anything ever. I love their dynamic so much: the way they both embody the themes of “truth” and “lies” within the game respectively, the way they constantly want to know more about each other while being afraid to open up or trust each other completely, and the fact that they so perfectly manage to capture the chase of the “phantom thief vs. detective” trope to the point that it was even lampshaded in Ouma’s love hotel... all of these things just make it so much fun.
It’s another ship where I just love thinking about the potential, whether in an AU where Ouma might have lived or else where the killing game never took place at all. I honestly really love ships that deal with a lot of slow-burn and both characters thinking their affections are unrequited when it turns out they’re actually both just idiots with a bad case of pining. I also really love the fact that, in my opinion, it’s a ship where Saihara would have to really take the initiative in the end—otherwise, Ouma is just going to keep trying to run away every time he drops an “I love you,” or “you’re my favorite.”
I also really, really love himiten. It’s a ship that gets a lot more flack than it deserves, in my opinion, and it’s sad to see that it’s a little underappreciated these days. There are flaws and problems within the ship, of course, but these are things that are actually addressed within the game itself. Himiko’s apathy and disregard towards Tenko’s feelings is called out pretty bluntly in the later parts of chapter 3, and she winds up mourning Tenko’s death and taking her last advice to heart more than anyone else.
Meanwhile, while Tenko certainly meant well and always had Himiko’s best interests at heart, it’s true that she came across as somewhat condescending sometimes (albeit unintentionally) by treating Himiko like a cute animal instead of a person.  I think that she understood Himiko’s feelings a lot better by chapter 3, which is why she prioritized trying to let Himiko talk to Angie one more time despite her own misgivings about Angie. Tenko grew a lot more as a character than a lot of people give her credit for, and I would have loved to see any post-game scenario where Himiko and Tenko could’ve finally started a relationship on equal footing outside of the game.
I actually have two entire ships for Miu that I am equally fond of. Both kiiruma and irumatsu are really great in my opinion, in totally different ways. The sheer chaotic potential of kiiruma gets overlooked a lot of times, I think, but both of them are complete disasters. They have so much fun together and it really shows, both in canon and in the talent development plan as well. Kiibo is so wonderful and I love him so much, because you’d think he’d be the voice of reason as a “cold, logical robot”—but honestly, he’s just as messed-up and over the top as Miu. I mean, he did photograph her poop on what turned out to be a live audience national broadcast and he didn’t see anything wrong with this.
Kiibo is one of the few characters who vocally talks about missing Miu after her death in chapter 4, and he repeatedly tells her how much he appreciates her maintenance work on him both in canon and in one of their talent development scenes. In one such scene, he even mentions wanting to continue their ongoing relationship after they graduate, which I think is surprisingly sweet and adorable for the two of them. Honestly, Miu is about as wild as a DR character ever gets, and I love the idea of her and Kiibo just having fun with each other.
Meanwhile, Kaede and Miu’s dynamic is a lot more back-and-forth. Kaede spends a good part of her FTEs absolutely frustrated and fed up with Miu, but also decidedly worried for her well-being and wondering how she might get her to be more of a team player. She’s not afraid to put her foot down when Miu crosses the line, but she’s also one of the few people who’s ever been willing to stand by Miu and encourage her or actually be her friend in spite of how awful Miu is at interacting with others.
Even in the talent development plan, Kaede’s often seen together with Miu a lot, which I think is super cute and confirms that even at Hope’s Peak, she’d still be trying to make sure Miu had a friend around. And she was able to tell that, despite what a disaster Miu’s idea with the Christmas lights was, it was Miu’s own way of trying to add to the festivities and do something nice for other people. All in all, it’s one of my favorite wlw DR ships, and I really love when fanworks capture just how shy or flustered Miu got around Kaede sometimes.
Of course, I like momoharu a lot as well! It’s one of the ships that has grown on me quite a bit in my absence, mostly just because despite all of Momota’s flaws, he really does want Maki to love herself first and foremost. Maki’s own feelings for Momota are so important to her character growth and really represent her feeling as though she’s finally made a choice for the first time in her life, and it’s really heartwarming to see. Also, any ship where the girl could lift a guy up with one arm without breaking a sweat is a pretty good ship in my opinion.
As for other ndrv3 ships that I enjoy a lot, there’s saihoshi (Hoshi is extremely underrated as a character, and I adore how sweet his FTEs and salmon mode with Saihara were; it’s also another ship where I feel Saihara would have to really take the initiative to make Hoshi fully open up, which I like), amamatsu (Kaede and Amami had a lot of really funny, great interaction in chapter 1 and some fun banter in their FTEs, so I would’ve loved to see more of it), and harumatsu/kaemaki (again, they have a lot of potential and it would have been extremely interesting to see them interact more).
I also like saiibo, not so much in the way that most people ship it (their love hotel is cute, don’t get me wrong!), but mostly because Kiibo’s FTEs are the funniest set of FTEs in the whole game in my opinion, and the twist where they were both looking down on each other without the other one knowing just made my jaw drop before I started laughing my ass off. They’re almost as much of a disaster together as Kiibo and Miu are, and I think the humor in their dynamic sometimes gets overlooked.
There are even more ships that I like, and I could keep going on and on, but I should probably leave things off here. Character interactions are so much fun in DR, both because of the genuine growth and character development from a lot of the cast, but also because so many of them are so whacky and borderline cartoonish that it’s just really fun imagining further interactions between them. Thank you for the fun ask, anon!

The Princess Bride: Facets of Film
Movie-making is a tough and complicated business.  Once you have a studio sold on your pitch and script, there’s changes to be made, casting to be done, lighting choices, changes to the script, sets to find, costumes to make, special effects to prepare, more changes to the script, camera set-up, studio supervision, and then, possibly, more changes to the script.
In a business populated by that many people all working on the same project, every film is a minor miracle that it got made at all.
As you may have gathered, making a movie is a huge undertaking.  There’s a lot that goes into it: cameras, music, sets, special effects, costumes, and more, managed by a lot of people who are very good at their jobs.  All of these little elements, which don’t seem that important on their own, all go into piecing together a coherent narrative in a way that makes sense, and looks good, to an audience.
Tumblr media
These elements, cinematography, lighting, costuming, special effects, etc., are the elements that can catch the attention of an audience, taking a ‘good’ film, and turning it into a ‘great’ film, thanks to the powers of movie magic.
See, movies are a very visual medium.  You can have a good story and characters in a book, but you have to imagine what it looks like as it moves along.  In a film, you have to watch what someone else made up.  This can be either an advantage or a disadvantage, and the difference is made entirely thanks to production design.  These ‘facets of film’, the trimmings that make a movie a movie, are vital to visual storytelling, enabling casual movie-goers to interpret what the framing of some scenes is trying to tell them.
Most audience members subconsciously internalize things like thematic costume changes, or a musical cue, without putting thought into figuring out what exactly was getting that point across.  The point is, these ‘facets of film’ are not only for filmmakers or movie critics to think about and fawn over: This storytelling shorthand is an important tool that gives the audience all of the information they need to have, without spelling it all out in dialogue.  Westley as the Dread Pirate Roberts wears all black as visual shorthand that he is dangerous, Humperdinck wears fine clothes to establish status and style, even Buttercup, whose clothing is plain when she is with Westley and uncomfortably bedecked when she is with Humperdinck, is dressed in a way that conveys something to the audience.
Tumblr media
In other words, it’s very useful.
A good director knows to use these aspects of ‘storytelling shorthand’ well, as opposed to competently.  Too often, directors can decide to focus the production crew, and the movie itself, in the wrong place, attempting to garner praise for production design rather than substance.
There’s nothing wrong with looking good and being a well-done movie from a technical standpoint, but the balance is necessary.  A good director knows that visual storytelling accentuates its story, rather than overshadows it, intended to get the plot across in the most effective way possible, focusing on what is important: the story and characters.
Tumblr media
Much like The Princess Bride does.
The Princess Bride isn’t exactly a blockbuster-style film.  There isn’t a huge budget spent on special effects or huge setpieces, but what is in there is done so with a remarkable touch.  Every inch of this film is designed to look like it takes place in a fairy-tale story, not exactly ‘real locations’, but looking like pictures you’d find in a story book.  That extends to the camerawork.
Camerawork is a pretty big deal in film for obvious reasons.
Tumblr media
The way a director uses a camera can tell the audience a lot, using some shots to emphasize different emotions, or even to get across different feelings to the audience.  Filmmakers use editing of these shots together to tell the story, to move the audience’s line of vision so that it is always centered on the action while also helping to set the mood or leave a visual impression on the audience.
So, does The Princess Bride manage that?
Most of the camerawork in The Princess Bride is fairly standard stuff, wide-shots for action, close-ups for dialogue or emotion, establishing shots for a new location, etc.  However, there are a handful of tricks that are notable: natural lighting used in the shots to make them feel open, spacious, and real, contrasting with artificial levels of darkness in the Fire Swamp, or the upwards-facing shot of Fezzik’s impersonation of the Dread Pirate Roberts, seeming to increase his size and formidability.  Other shots, like the coming-into-focus of Westley rising to point his sword at Humperdinck, are equally effective, in uses of ‘subjective camera’.  There are other, more traditional examples: shots of Buttercup’s abduction from above to make her seem even smaller, and establishing ‘relationship’ shots of people on the same level in the same frame, such as the sunset-lit kiss sequences bookending the film.  Even the editing, while being mostly standard, is given a few moments to shine, such as when the Grandfather is trying to find his place in the story after interrupting to make sure the Grandson isn’t frightened by the Shrieking Eels.
Tumblr media
Still, overall, it’s a fairly simple film in terms of visual style.  The cinematography is aimed at one goal: creating a charming, warm, comforting atmosphere that translates well and correctly conveys the mood of the audience.
This is even more so aided by the film’s score.
It’s fairly obvious that a movie’s soundtrack is integral to its success: a good movie can be elevated to iconic levels thanks to a good score (i.e. Jaws, Psycho, Star Wars, etc.).  In other cases, music can be passable, serviceable, without being bad or fantastic.
Tumblr media
In the case of The Princess Bride, the score is….interesting, to say the least.  Instead of a traditional ‘fantasy’ score, the soundtrack was composed by Mark Knopfler, the front guitarist for the band Dire Straits (Money for Nothing, Walk of Life), using synthesizers and acoustic guitars to get the sound of the film.  The score, especially both the instrumental and vocal covers of ‘Storybook Love’ (sung by Willy DeVille) is memorable, overall, if nothing to write home about.  The soundtrack does what it is intended to do: set the scene, notably in the scene ‘The Chatty Duelists’, where Inigo and Westley fight to the stings of the music.  The music overall accentuates the grand, sweeping visuals as well as the tense, exciting sequences, keeping the audience in the story very well.
Speaking of grand, sweeping visuals:
The sets of The Princess Bride overall aren’t really ‘sets’ at all.  The ‘Cliffs of Insanity’ were in actuality the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, and even Humperdinck’s castle was actually a real medieval manor house.  From Miracle Max’s shack to the Fire Swamp, to Rugen’s torture chamber, the rest of the settings of The Princess Bride do their job very well, creating a fantastical atmosphere that serves the story admirably.  These aren’t the vivid, magical sets of The Wizard of Oz, designed to create an atmosphere of dreamlike fantasy, rather, the settings of The Princess Bride are more intended to create a feeling of Magical Realism, that it is a storybook, but that the locations look and feel familiar and realistic.  This is helped somewhat by the fact that the film itself doesn’t rely on special effects much at all: aside from the Shrieking Eels and the (rather unrealistic looking) ROUSes (saved by the storybook feel of the entire film), there aren’t any real fantasy-specific special effects that other films might utilize.
Tumblr media
There’s more to an immersive movie experience than sets, costumes and music, though.  In the end, no matter how impressive, the special effects, sets and costumes don’t really mean anything if the characters aren’t believable.  The movie really rests on the shoulders of the performers: it’s on the actors to try to sell not only their surroundings and story, but the characters themselves, everything from the personality to the emotions.
In the case of The Princess Bride?
Cary Elwes’s performance as Westley is lighthearted, emotional, and extremely sincere.  He’s charismatic, charming, and makes you believe that he’s exactly as skilled as the story needs him to be.  He also manages to convince an entire audience of the genuine love he has for Buttercup, and is distinct as both his Westley persona and his ‘Dread Pirate Roberts’ persona.  In other words, he’s perfect.
Tumblr media
Cary Elwes balances the ‘indestructibility’ that most protagonists seem to possess, seemingly in control of dire situations, as well as the vulnerability necessary for an audience’s sympathy and concern for his well-being, for his goal.  In other words, he manages to pull off a character that seems designed for an earlier time, updating it with a sense of humor and charm that perfectly suits the rest of the film.
Robin Wright is similarly well-suited for Buttercup, as she’s written.  I’ve discussed elsewhere the potential problems presented by Buttercup’s rather uninteresting personality and role in the story, but Buttercup’s Defrosting Ice Queen tendencies are very well conveyed, especially early on.  As I mentioned in other articles, her chemistry with Elwes makes the romance element of the film convincing in the few scenes they have together.  She does a good job with the material given to her, it’s just a shame that there wasn’t more for her to do.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya, despite the unconvincing accent, is inspired, with Patinkin bringing both warm humor and ice-cold vengeance and formidability to the role.  Both he and Elwes brought great physicality to their sword-fight sequences, training hard in order to do as much of their own fighting as possible, and it shows in the performances in the final product.  Inigo’s inner conflict is showcased well, with Patinkin providing both the comedic highlights as well as the intense emotional ones, especially his final duel with Rugen.  It is Inigo’s lines which tend to be the most memorable, owing a lot to Patinkin’s iconic delivery.
Tumblr media
All three of the main trio play their parts perfectly, but they are only the chief standouts in an entire film full of them.
André René Roussimoff (better known as André the Giant) despite not being an actor in the same vein as the rest of the cast, is iconic as Fezzik.  The instant likeability present in the performance carries strongly throughout the film, with his own fair share of memorable dialogue (which, granted, nearly every member in the cast has).  His physicality isn’t really what makes him such a distinct part of the cast, rather, it’s the character’s heart and humor that makes this performance such an integral part to the film at large.
Tumblr media
Similarly (though in the opposite direction), Wallace Shawn is a wonderful choice for Vizzini, his distinct voice and mannerisms giving the character plenty of funny dialogue without entirely removing the threat he poses.  Despite not having a lot of screen time, Shawn manages to make the role iconic instantly, with inflections that make the word ‘inconceivable’ memorable to this day.
Tumblr media
Chris Sarandon is perfectly cast as Prince Humperdinck, playing arrogance and control that all come crashing down in the final scene.  Humperdinck is all bark and no bite, appearing confident and competent until he is met by someone who might pose a challenge.  He’s conniving, cold, and disinterested in anything other than his war, making it especially rewarding when he is defeated.
Tumblr media
Similarly, Christopher Guest plays Count Rugen with a sophisticated coolness, never really invested in what’s going on or terribly worried about it until that ‘little Spanish brat’ comes for revenge, very well equipped to deliver it.  He plays the final duel scene notably with an increased losing of composure, cluing the audience in to his inevitable demise for the sake of vengeance.
Tumblr media
The other characters perfectly hit their mark as well: Billy Crystal and Carol Kane are a comedic team to be reckoned with as Miracle Max and Valerie, with other special standouts including Peter Cook as the Impressive Clergymen (a scene stealer with only one appearance), and Peter Falk and Fred Savage as the Grandfather and the Grandson, respectively.
Every character in The Princess Bride comes across exactly as they should: as characters in a fairytale, fondly looked back on from a place of adulthood.  Each performance is perfectly suited to each character and the type of movie that they are in, with every performance hitting a mix of sincerity and drollness.  These performances aren’t necessarily subtle, but they aren’t supposed to be.  They are heroes and villains, giants and master swordsmen and princesses, acting out a fairy-tale that knows exactly what it is, with tonal consistency that never seeks to outdo the material the actors are given.  These performances are the final piece to cementing this film as a true classic, bringing entertainment to people decades after it’s first release.

In short, the filmmakers of The Princess Bride knew what they were doing.  Everything from the performances to the camerawork gets across every emotion and aspect of the story instantly, with the sets and costumes working to explain simply what’s going on as quickly as possible.  It’s a storybook set to film, both comforting and exciting, and the ending feels right, no matter how many times we revisit it.
The Princess Bride has long been considered a cult classic, a hidden gem that was looked over by a public who never really knew it was there in the first place.  Even if it never reaches the high peaks of fame as other fantasy classics, it may not be a stretch to hail it as one of the greatest fantasy films (or films in general) ever made, through simple (but not simplistic) substance, if not bombastic style.
Tumblr media
Of course, no movie comes around accidently.  There had to be some work done behind the scenes for this film to have come about.
Join me next time as we discuss the Facets of Filmmaking: the Behind the Scenes of The Princess Bride.
Thank you guys so much for reading!  If you have something you’d like to add or say, don’t forget that the ask box is always open!  I hope to see you all in the next article.

hi twin of mine can u do bruabba jotakak and caejose please
HI ERIN this got really long sorry
bruabba
no opinion tbh :/// a few years ago i didn’t really mind it, but i feel like part five has gotten really saturated and so has bruabba. best case i don’t really care but worst i do not like it. out of like the three main ships in va (bruabba, fugio, naramis) i find that bruno and abbachio are too similar, and they kinda seem boring to me
caejose
i love caejose!!! my darkest secret is that i didn’t really like caejose but now i get enough of them. they have really great chemistry, and both kinda have the instance where they can make fun of each other when they mess up a tad. they just really bounce off eachother it’s really great. old caejose is really great too, i would imagine they could be a bit more lovey to eachother compared to young. thing is w caejose is that you have to strike a balance w their relationship; too lovey and it just seems like two bara characters eating each others faces out, and too funny makes them seem a bit mean to eachother?? i love caejose being funny it works really well, but it’s kinda easy to just make them straight up hate eachother and the jokes just go flat. it really sucks that in a more generalized standpoint caejose is the horny bara ship, but from my tiny little bubble of jojo mutuals it’s so funny and underrated. love those guys :)
jotakak
yes yes i know a lot of people call it noritaro because jotakak is kind of old news but i think jotakak reads better and if anything noritaro reminds me of the weird fujo shit of the past since it has the term “nori” in it. also i am an old man in the jojo fandom. anyways. i think a few years ago i would’ve had stronger opinions about jotakak, but now i just they’re alright. i still like it, they’re kinda like The Jojo Ship™ but now the phase has kinda gone away. i’m glad there’s been a bit of a jotakak resurgence, but i think they work well in a more casual setting. i write a lot of jotakak funnily enough, but i do think (while it’s not boring or terrible) their dynamic does kinda pale in comparison to stuff like avpol and caejose. long story short, i’ve mostly moved on from jotakak, but still can admit i like it

For the Character Ask Meme, you must know I will ask about Beckett :D
But of course! For there is no character who concerns my fandom efforts more than the fair Gangrel boi-o!
How I feel about Beckett:
Well, to be fair, I kinda ignored him at first. My first run of Bloodlines 1 I wasn’t so much interested in the lore and just wanted to discover all the character interactions with the Anarchs that I could. On repeated play throughs however, he started to grow on me. One day I eventually looked up his character online and well, I took the bisexual vampire Indiana Jones bait hook, line, and sinker 😅 He’s an absolute delightful character - not a Gary-Stu (he has realistic flaws and has made PLENTY of mistakes over the years), intelligent and open to new ideas (big brains are SEXY), has a rather attractive character design (other than that phase in the 90’s where he had Jerry Seinfeld hair he’s always had long dark hair and I mean come on, who can’t swoon over that?), he’s a middle-aged character which, especially in modern media, you do not see that often (age representation FTW!), and of course...did I mention bisexual? I think I may have but just wanted to be sure I got that in there.
People I ship with Beckett romantically:
If you’ve never read any of the novels/sourcebooks that feature dear Cuthbert, he’s very popular with like...literally everyone and anyone he meets. Camarilla, Sabbat, Anarch, doesn’t matter. They all are hot for him, and based on some of the stuff in Jyhad Diary, goodness does he know it 😆 That said, he seems rather choosy with who he totally opens up to friendship wise, so the same can only be assumed to be just as exclusive, if not moreso, for romance.
For romance, out of the many candidates out in the night and based on Beckett’s canonically established sexual preferences:
Anatole for the guys, because come on, they have gay couple goals written all over them! Whether or not they have a sexual relationship is up in the air, but no one who has ever read anything between these two can deny that there is capital L LOVE between them. Anatole’s thrown parties for Beckett, misses him when they’re a part, and of course in the Gehenna timeline visits Beckett in his dreams to try and help him despite having met Final Death. Since he’s alive and well as of V20 and onwards, I hope one day we get a bit more of an in-depth look into their relationship because even if it isn’t “canon”, the seeds of romance have been sown for these two! (Honorable mentions go to Vlad Dracula ((yes you read that right and yes they canonically fucked and Beckett is a bride of Dracula and no I’m not making this up read Jyhad Diary)) and Hesha Ruhadze).
The female half of the spectrum was tricky. I think he will always be in love with Emma Blake, his love interest from the Victorian novel Trilogy, and since White Wolf likes to resurrect characters we saw die these days in lore, perhaps she’ll come back! I certainly hope so, that lady deserves a break. Beckett does best with a calm and dedicated feminine partner who balances out his impulsive and sometimes wishy-washy loyalties, and Emma is the perfect candidate for that. She inspires humanity and tenderness in him and he in turn gives her strength and courage. They’re just too cute together and I want them to have a happy ending some how, some way 😭 (Honorable mentions go to Lucita de Aragon and Carna the Tremere).
I also have to mention Sascha Vykos because oh boy, is there chemistry between these two in Jyhad Diary. They’ve reached a truce at the moment in the canon and Beckett finds them “handsome and beautiful”, so there is ample opportunity for a enemies-to-allies-to-lovers arc here. They both actually have quite a bit in common interest-wise regarding seeking out knowledge and looking for answers about what it means to be a vampire. Maybe the answer they’re looking for is with each other...
My non-romantic OTP with Beckett:
This has to go to Lucita de Aragon. They are just too good together as partners. While they may have or have had a sexual relationship, I don’t see them as true love interests because I think especially at this point Lucita is kinda done with men, at least from a romantic standpoint. They’re undoubtedly best friends and are able to tease one another, help each other out, and of course turn plenty of heads when they walk into the room together. Lasombra-Gangrel besties who can fuck you up, basically 😂 (Honorable mention goes to Okulos the Nosferatu. He might have gotten it if not for his behavior in the Gehenna timeline, and I know it’s pretty much ignored in the canon atm but it’s hard to just forget about. Sorry Okulos. Try not to be such a prick in the future).
My unpopular opinion about Beckett:
Hmm...this is a hard one. The only thing I could really think of is that he maybe needs to learn how to ask for help more often? He tries to be a one man show (possibly to keep people from stealing his discoveries like his adopted sire did, possibly to keep the few close people he has safe) and that gets him into trouble a lot. He’s gotten lucky and gotten out of a lot of jams on his own or by sheer luck that someone found him.
One thing that I wish would happen/had happened to Beckett in canon:
I wish we could have seen him interact with characters in Bloodlines that he later hangs out with in Jyhad Diary like Damsel and Smiling Jack. Would have been really cool to see and hear with Michael Gough voicing him!

Answers for the End-of-Year Fic-Writer Ask Meme (thanks to @ami46 and @almhw85 for submitting me numbers 6, 8, and 10 :)
6. What’s your favourite piece of dialogue you wrote this year?
It would have to be Napoleon's dressing-down of Murat in my alternate-history fic "The Betrayer's Redemption." I've always wondered what their first meeting in the aftermath of Murat's defection in 1814 might have been like, if Napoleon had not refused to see Murat after escaping Elba in 1815. It almost certainly would've been extremely awkward and uncomfortable--for both of them. Realistically, Murat would've probably been very talkative--trying to explain himself, making excuses etc, at least until Napoleon told him to shut up. But for the sake of this story, and its overall theme of reconciliation, I went with a chastened, beaten Murat, staying miserably silent while Napoleon lays into him, both venting his frustrations but also trying to impress upon his brother-in-law the severity of what he's done. All while keeping in mind his words to Caulaincourt about always needing to balance "a bit of bad temper and a bit of sentiment" when dealing with Murat. It was a tough scene to write from an emotional standpoint--not the least because the relationship between Murat & Napoleon tears at my heart--but Napoleon's dialogue came so naturally. I'm really proud of this scene overall.
8. Which fic this year was most fun to write?
My & @histoireettralala's jointly-written Lannes/Murat/Ney road trip fic. This was the first story we ever wrote together, and it was a blast. We would throw random little modern-AU scenarios at each other in chat, featuring those three, and the first part of this story was a scenario I made up one day and PM'ed to @histoireettralala. And it kind of just exploded from there. By the time it was done we had fleshed out our AU marshals pretty thoroughly, introduced Napoleon into the mix, and pretty much set the groundwork for an entire modern AU based around Napoleon & the marshals. The hotel room antics of Murat & Lannes, and the final scene with Napoleon, were my personal favorites to write, but the whole thing was so much fun from start to finish, not just the writing but also the brainstorming sessions we had together over PM where we would come up with different plot twists and scenes. @histoireettralala and I think very much alike and our creative chemistry has been one of the highlights of this year for me.
10. What, if anything, are you going to try to do differently in your writing in the new year?
I might go more outside our cheerful modern AU a bit and write some Napoleonic-era pieces that are more melancholic. I've got a couple scenes in mind that I'm kind of dying to write but it's not always easy for me to write sad stuff, especially these days. Our modern AU with its fluff and silliness has been very uplifting and honestly very therapeutic for me this year. But sometimes writing the sad stuff can be good too. We'll see. I'd like to try to write more overall this coming year, as I'm not really happy with my general unproductiveness in 2020.

I’ve seen a lot of comparisons between Peeta and Sejanus but I raise you this:
Peeta and Jessup.
(under the cut because it got longer than expected)
Jessup is probably my favourite character in the book that isn’t in the main cast. When we were first introduced to him, I kinda guessed that he wouldn’t be playing a big role because of how much attention (both from and within the narrative) Lucy Gray was given. Besides, like many people have pointed out, there’s already plenty of parallels between LG and Katniss, and I don’t think Suzanne Collins would’ve wanted to bombard us even further by having Jessup be a Peeta-resque figure. But from what little we know about him, there are definitely subtle similarities to Peeta.
Right off the bat, he has a natural chemistry with Lucy Gray. Whilst Peeta and Katniss’s dynamic was more of an equal partnership, Jessup sort of lets Lucy Gray take the lead.
As he neared the mayor, Lucy Gray stepped forward and extended her hand. The boy hesitated, then reached out and shook. Lucy Gray crossed in front of him, switched her right hand for her left, and they were standing side by side, holding hands, when she made a deep curtsy, pulling the boy into a bow. (p. 38)
Lucy Gray Baird stepped into the light, her cuffed hands half covering her eyes as they adjusted. Jessup reached up his arms, his wrists spread as wide as the chain on his restraints would allow, and she fell forward, letting him catch her by the waist and swing her to the ground in a surprisingly graceful move. She patted the boy’s sleeve in thanks and tilted her head back to drink in the sunlight streaming into the station. (pp. 41-42)
“Go on, Jessup!”
Emboldened, her hulking district partner slowly approached Sejanus and took the sandwich from his hand. He waited until a plum followed and then walked off without a word. Suddenly, the other tributes rushed the fence, hands thrusting through the bars. (pp. 65-66)
Jessup and Lucy Gray trust each other from the beginning. That last passage is also interesting to me because they’re the only two district tributes at this stage that seem to have that trust in each other. And it’s Jessup’s trust in Lucy Gray (and the fact that she cares about him to get him to eat, too) that pushes the other tributes to eat as well. This suggests to me that, at least in that moment, the other tributes are looking to LG and Jessup as to how to react/behave in these unfamiliar and hostile surroundings, because of how they trust each other.
There’s also quite a few parallels between Katniss/Peeta and LG/Jessup once they’re in the arena: Jessup is the one that braves the Cornucopia and the stronger tributes for weapons (although it’s not anywhere near the bloodbath it was in the 74th Games), LG and Jessup stay mostly out of sight in those cave-like tunnels, there’s a passing mention from Snow about them cuddling together for warmth at night, LG was probably looking after him as best as she could whilst he was sick, etc. That trust carries through right into the arena.
And then there’s his descent into rabidness.
Jessup made his way across the arena and seemed confused by Lucy Gray’s rejection. He began to climb after her into the stands, but he had trouble keeping his balance. As he entered the field of debris, his coordination diminished further, and twice he fell with great force, opening gashes on his knee and temple. After the second wound, which generated a fair amount of blood, he sat, somewhat stunned, on a step, reaching out to her. His mouth moved while the foam began dripping from his chin.
Lucy Gray remained motionless, watching Jessup with a pained expression. They created a strange tableau: rapid boy, trapped girl, bombed-out building. It suggested a tale that could only end in tragedy. Star-crossed lovers meeting their fate. A revenge story turned in on itself. A war saga that took no prisoners. (p. 257)
(There’s so much to unpack here but I don’t think I can untangle this all on my own, so I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts!)
Obviously the connection to Katniss/Peeta could not be clearer with the star-crossed lovers reference, but strangely enough, beyond that reference, I don’t find this parallel as compelling as the others. And the reason for that is because I don’t think Peeta would run after Katniss like that unless he had completely lost his mind (i.e, hijacked!Peeta). Jessup in this scene is still enough of himself feel confused and stunned (he isn’t attacking her), but he most certainly isn’t thinking straight. Instead, he’s acting on the one impulse he’s got left, this instinct that (in my opinion) has become his whole life and identity since he was reaped: stay with Lucy Gray. From a logical standpoint, he would keep himself holed up in a tunnel to die where he wouldn’t be a risk to LG, because there can only be one winner at the end of the day (and I fully believe this is what Peeta would do). But this desire to stay with her, even if it puts her in danger, comes from a baser instinct. And not necessarily in an animalistic, he-can’t-think-straight-because-rabies sort of way (which is the vibe I got from Snow’s observations of the scene), but more in the sense that this instinct is coming from this deep, unreachable and visceral part of him. He follows after her because that’s what he’s been doing since they were thrown into the Games together, and when he can’t he reaches out to her. Even when the rabies and the starvation and the abuse have stripped away everything else about him, it cannot erase the fact that Lucy Gray is important to him.
Then there’s that second bit, which is laden with symbols. If I might digress a little, I’m interested in the narrative imagery (tale, revenge story, war saga). I mean, the images are bleak, but there’s also this deformed personification to them (??); a revenge story that ‘turns in on itself’, a war saga that comes alive and ruthlessly ‘takes no prisoners’. To me, it (maybe?) suggests an intermingling and gruesome transformation from a passive fiction to an active and terrible reality. I cannot for the life of me think of a way to link this Jessup, but I would be so interested to hear what other people make of this.
I also wanna talk about the moment of his death as well:
She approached him with caution and knelt just out of reach of his long arms. Trying to smile, she said, “You go to sleep now, you hear, Jessup? You go on, it’s my turn to stand guard.” Something seemed to register, her voice or perhaps the repetition of words she’d spoken to him over the past two weeks. The rigidity eased in his face, and his eyelids fluttered. “That’s right. Let yourself go. How are you going to dream if you don’t go to sleep?” Lucy Gray scooted forward and laid a hand on his head. “It’s okay. I’ll watch over you. I’m right here. I’m staying right here.” Jessup stared at her fixedly as the life slowly ebbed out of his body and his chest became still. (p. 260)
(UGH Sometimes I forget just how impactful some of the deaths in the series can be)
I think I’ve said all that I can about the importance of LG in Jessup’s last few moments, and the effect she has on him in laying him to rest, but I am interested in LG’s reaction to his death. Specifically, to what extent does she mourn him when he’s gone? It’s clear that she cares a lot about him and she still trusts him to be able to get that close to him; she cleans his face and lays him to rest properly. But (unless she mourned him whilst she was hidden away) she doesn’t seem to be as bothered by his death as he might’ve been by hers. And certainly not as Katniss would’ve been if that was Peeta. I mean, I get it; she’s ultimately determined to survive and go home, she’s a lot smarter about her position in the Games (whereas Jessup had focused on her), she has Snow in her head. But (and this has no relevance to this analysis as a whole) as a Jessup stan, I’m a little bitter about it.
Finally, Jessup is a protector through and through. I couldn’t have said it better than Lysistrata so I’ll just put the reference in:
“What I’d like people to know about Jessup is that he was a good person. He threw his body over mine to protect me when the bombs started going off in the arena. It wasn’t even conscious. He did it reflexively. That’s who he was at heart. A protector. I don’t think he would’ve ever won the Games, because he’d have died trying to protect Lucy Gray.” (p. 262)
If that doesn’t scream Peeta Mellark, I don’t know what?? Does??? I was lowkey stanning him from the beginning when he helped LG off the train, but this moment really cemented that for me.
In conclusion, Jessup Diggs deserved better.

4) What is your favourite thing about your muse? Why did you pick them up, what do you want to explore?
Easily how he's a shit-talker, yet he's perfectly capable of backing up everything he spouts. I feel like that's not a common occurrence for a character, especially for a protagonist? It's pretty refreshing.
As for why I picked him up, I know I’ve rambled a bit about this all before but, the potential complexity of his personality from being the fused result of two heavily-contrasting characters like Vegeta and Goku was too tempting to pass up!
It's also the biggest thing I want to keep exploring with him; how those two's personalities have mixed together exactly. For example, Vegito's got Vegeta's pride and ruthlessness in battle, yet he still has Goku's jolliness and some of his naivety. Additionally, he has some traits unique to him that you don’t really see in either of his fusees (or at least not in the way Vegito expresses them). I want to have how fascinating he is have more of an impact in threads, especially if the other muse knows he’s a fusion.
The second biggest thing that I think is worth a mention, is that Vegito truly does think himself as his own person and not a “vessel” for Goku and Vegeta working together. He might jokingly refer to himself as “us” or “we” in rare moments, but it does bother him if his individuality is questioned. I would also like for this to show up in threads more.
5) What is your least favourite thing about your muse? What makes them difficult to write, or interact with?
Funnily enough, it's how much flexibility I have with Vegito's characterization that might be my least favorite thing about him, only because I have to worry about balancing him. Can't have him be too similar to Goku, or too similar to Vegeta, but I do still need to depict traits from them both since they're the foundations of Vegito's psyche. If I didn't, I wouldn't even be writing Vegito at that point.
One thing in particular that is difficult for me to write, is the Vegeta parts of him and how exactly they'll blend with his Goku parts. I like Vegeta and all, but he's not a character I've paid that much attention to in the years I've watched Dragon Ball media (doesn’t help that we’ve had Goku since the original Dragon Ball, but Vegeta didn’t have much of an established presence in the main cast until halfway into Z), so I honestly don't have a FULL grasp of his personality (outside of the obvious things like his arrogance).
Since I understand Goku way more than him, I involuntarily lean more into Vegito's Goku traits. It’s something I'll have to work on!
17) Are you confident in sending memes, liking for starters, etc.? Is there anything you’d like your followers to know about your anxiety?
Yeah! If it's a meme that works with my muse, I'll send it in. I used to have a bad habit of liking a bunch of starter calls in the past (because all my mutuals were cool and I wanted to write with them all right away!), but of course, this resulted in me receiving a bunch of starters at once and getting overwhelmed. I've learned to only like starter calls if I feel like I can keep up with the increase to my current draft pile.
If I feel like I have "too" many threads going on at the moment, I probably won't take any new ones unless they're meaningful / plotted. As in, unless they end up going somewhere and helping our muses either form some chemistry with one another or form some character development.
As for my anxiety, there’s really nothing special I feel I need to say about it on an IC-related standpoint? OOC wise is a different story, but I’ll leave that topic alone for now.
