The Cedric's Apprentice magazine arrived today!! 🥳🎉
Tumblr media
What surprises me the most it's the price. 13 brazillian reais!! This magazine today would cost arount 20 reais or more. In USA 20 reais would be around 4 dollars, which looks cheap, but 20 reais is a lot 😳 inflation yay
I don't remember how much I paid for this today anymore. As far as I remember I think it was around, idk, 15 reais? I believe it's not that expensive because it's not a coveted product, people don't want to buy it, which is in a way a little sad.
This magazine seems used, since it's in a good quality but not as good as the previous ones (they are from another seller). Because of the label, I suppose that it was in a bookstore or a magazine stand in the past, so it makes sense about being a little damaged. You can see it's damage in the corner of the pages, and they seem a little crumpled, it's also visible in the pics that I took. Imagining this still circulating in a magazine stand 10 years ago makes me emotional somehow :( I guess it's because of nostalgia. I always asked my mom to buy me activity/coloring books and sticker albums when walking through these on the street and sometimes she did buy them for me. Now they're nowhere to be seen nowadays. They were my happiness years ago, I had tons of Disney Princesses coloring books and I had an Angelina Ballerina sticker album. I miss my childhood 😭
You know the rule that I mentioned about each magazine being about one specific episode? This one didn't worked like that. Disney you really do hate Cedric, huh? (One of his two illustrations has a paint damage in his eyes. DISNEY YOU REALLY HATE CEDRIC DON'T YOU?)
The episodes mentioned were Two To Tangu (and the comic was about that episode 😭😭 nooo I want a Cedric's Apprentice comic), Cedric's Apprentice, The Amulet And The Anthem, and for some reason Cinderella is there too but in a different context (Once Upon A Princess, kinda).
That's all the Cedric content we had from this magazine
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to post close ups from his art but Tumblr only supports 10 images per blog!
We have a board game that I may or may not play, but I will definitely take copies to cut, as I refuse to cut an out-of-line product. IT'S NOT PRODUCED ANYMORE!
We also had a view of some books in his bookshelf on the cover and a spell book in the board game that I have never seen in the show. The cover of this book is really cute, you have a good taste Cedric. It's a flying dragon.
These are all the images related to him!
I will definitely post all the pages scanned as soon as I put my hands on the last two magazines. Not just the Cedric pages, I'm talking about everything.
That's all folks!

1) animated character that was your gay awakening?
10) own any signed books/memorabilia?
35) you must get a meme tattoo, what is it & where?
1. Its not gay anymore but it felt taboo at the time; the brazillian guy from Xiaolin Showdown. Could not tell you why other than "he's cute".
2. None that I care enough to remember, tbh. I have a hardcover Pathfinder comic with a very heartfelt message from my friend of 11 years, if that counts?
35. QR code that links to the Never Gonna Give You Up youtube. Left asscheek.

A rewrite of the sexy dance-off scene, where one character can’t hide their real feelings.
LET’S GO
Season 4 - 1400 words - Angie/ MC - Suz (@mrsbsmooth)
Angie thinks she and Siobhan are just best friends. But Siobhan’s not dancing for the boys.
So in this one, Dylangate happened earlier, and the heartrate challenge happened after it.
And this prompt is actually inspired by a specific song - the dance / song referenced in this fic specifically was prompted by this video
https://youtu.be/ZmhmkOpDbH0
Tumblr media
———————————————————————-
“You’re next, Shiv”
Angie reached the top of the stairs and found Siobhan stretching on the floor.
As she caught Angie’s eye, she spread her legs, effortlessly moving into a full split. Her muscles flexed as her legs spread apart, making Angie’s eyes dart up and down.
She was a dancer, so Angie shouldn’t have been surprised that she was flexible. But… holy moly.
Black tank top, black brazillian knickers, fishnet stockings, and bright red fuck-me boots.
God, she murdered this look.
But she murdered every look. She was, without a doubt, the most beautiful woman Angie had ever seen. She wasn’t gay. She wasn’t even into girls. But god. She’d never seen anything like Siobhan.
It was like she’d stepped out of a comic book.
Her body was… god. And her lips… urgh. And her eyes… And she just… Fuckin’ hell.
These boys weren’t going to know what hit them. Shiv had danced a little at cocktail parties, and her and Bruno had shown off their dancing a little… but god, he was a fucking shit.
Ever since he’d made her sleep on the daybeds, something had changed between him and Siobhan. She seemed to hate him for it.
She didn’t break up with him… and she was certainly still fucking him… but it was like she’d opened her heart to him.
And he’d hurt her.
So she’d slammed it. The fuck. Shut. And no crowbar, no key, no amount of (apparently great) dick he could give her, was going to be enough for her to trust him again.
Angie’s partnership wasn’t much better. Tom was clearly head over heels for Siobhan. So was Youcef. And Najuma. Day three, Shiv had coupled up with Najuma, who’d never been able to look anywhere else since. Everyone wanted Siobhan. She was… god.
She was a god. A goddess.
And she was kind. And funny. And silly. And smart. And considerate. And her best, best, best friend.
Angie couldn’t wait to see her dance.
Thinking about Shiv dancing sent a shudder through her, and her bottom lip quivered.
Shiv pulled her legs in, and extended a hand to Angie. “Help me up, babe”
Angie steadied her back against the wall, and reached for her, pulling her up. Shiv jumped up, and stumbled forward, steadying herself by placing her hand on the wall next to Angie’s head.
For a moment… Angie thought she’d done it on purpose, and she felt something in her throat catch.
The deep red paint on Siobhan’s lips glistened, as her tongue darted across them. A wisp of raven black hair fell across her face, and Shiv traced a long nail up her cheek as she tucked it behind her ear.
She leaned in, letting her lips linger just next to Angie’s cheek. Her breath was hot. The closeness of it making Angie feel a little lightheaded.
Just the adrenaline. It’s just the adrenaline.
“Make sure you’re watching, yeah?” Shiv stepped back. “I did this one for you”
She threw a wink at Angie, and turned, making her way down the stairs.
*
Angie settled in, kneeling on the benches with the other girls, peering over to watch Shiv drive the boys crazy. She wondered if she could make one of them cum without even touching him. If anyone could do it, Shiv could. And it’d probably be Tom.
The boys were looking between each other, nervous.
But then the music started.
The deep, haunting bars filled the villa, and Angie felt a flutter in her stomach as Shiv rounded the corner.
She stepped slowly toward the boys, her legs crossing with each step. Her hips swayed with the beat, her movements sharp and considered.
She knows what she’s doing.
As the sensual female vocals started, Shiv’s movements synced with the beat, winding her body seductively.
On one beat, she stopped, and squatted down, slapping her thighs, and Angie felt a pulsing heat between her legs.
What the…
But Shiv didn’t stop there. She continued to the floor, crawling, rolling around, arching her back, dragging herself through full splits.
Angie had no idea what this performance looked like from the front… but she was almost certain that Shiv had done this on purpose. Because the real show was the one from the back.
Her perfect, perfect ass. God. Fucking. Damn it.
But it wasn’t just the dancing. It was the song. Angie could feel the beat of the song through her entire body. Something about the words was doing something to her.
“I could be a better boyfriend than him
I could do the shit that he never did
Up all night, I won't quit
Thinking I'm gonna steal you from him
I could be such a gentleman
Plus all my clothes would fit”
It was like song was calling her. Begging her.
And everything seemed to fall in to place all at once.
How much Angie hated Bruno. How jealous she got. How angry she was about Shiv being treated badly. Why the innocent “just-for-funsies” kisses they’d shared after a few drinks had left her breathless.
Why her legs entwined with Shiv’s as she held her all night on the daybeds that night had left her wetter than she’d ever been in her life.
She’d thought it had just been a weird dream.
“I never would have left you alone
Here on your own glued to your phone
Never would have left you alone
For someone else to take you home”
It was like she was singing the song to Shiv, and she was performing it for the both of them.
Showing Angie everything they could be.
The realisation hit her like a slap in the face.
And she looked at Shiv, winding her way around in front of the boys, each of them looking like they’d cut each others’ dicks off for a chance to fuck her right then and there.
What she wouldn’t give to go down there. Have her hands on her waist. Let her hands fall over her ass, pulling her against her. Rip those fucking stockings off her. Get her on her back. Throw those fucking boots across the room.
Another wave of shudders came over her, but this one travelled all the way down, sending a wave of heat through her.
She’d never felt this way about someone before.
Wanted them. Needed them. Desired them.
But almost as soon as it started, the dance was over. And Angie had to face the reality.
I want her.
I want to be with her.
I’m… I might be in love with her.
But before she could plan how the fuck she was going to deal with this revelation, the other girls ran down to chat to the boys. Angie lingered. She needed a minute. To calm down. To try and breathe. She knew her secret would be discovered as soon as she walked down there. Her breath fast. Palms sweaty. Nipples hard enough to show through her flimsy outfit.
“Ange! Hurry up! We’re about to get the results!”
She made her way down, purposely avoiding Shiv’s gaze. Bruno had pulled her into his lap, and was already kissing her shoulder, clearly staking a claim to his territory.
He may as well have lifted his leg and pissed on her.
Fuckhead. Angie thought.
Najuma’s phone chimed.
“The winner of the heart rate challenge is… the girls!”
The girls cheered
“The person who raised heart rates the most overall was… Siobhan! Congratulations! You have won a night in the hideaway for you and the islander of your choice”
Everyone applauded as Bruno pushed her to stand, as he pulled her away.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Shiv laughed
He looked confused.
“I’m taking Angie”
What?
Angie met her gaze for the first time since her dance had ended. Her eyes were ablaze with desire. Because she knew.
She knew what her dance had done to Angie.
And she knew that Angie had finally figured out what was going on between them.
She walked over to Angie, wrapping her arms around her neck as she whispered in her ear again.
“What do you say, babe? Figured it out yet?”
Angie nodded.
“Good. Let’s go.”

I know it’s a cliche question, but what inspired you to make comics? Did you read any comics as kid that you really liked? Personally, when I was a kid, I loved a Brazillian comic book series called Turma da Mônica, and that inspired me to start making comics!
You know as a kid? I really never... thought much of comics!! I made alot as a kid and I enjoyed them of course! But they weren't anything I thought all that hard about until I got into middle school and started thinking more about what makes a story a story, I love film and animation and everything that goes into it and realized that a comic is like... someone who does all the jobs.. setting the stage and the lighting and the dialouge...
i thought that was so cool!!! Mind you this was around the time that my special interest in disney duck comics had just started and I was getting back into tmnt/superheros (coughs) I had just read homestuck a few years prior and I was slowly starting to notice all the cool patterns in tropes used in comics were also used in the movies I loved to watch!
I've always been really visual and realized havibg pictures to go along with my writing was alot easier for me to manage!! I think it just became a part of how I learned to process stories, although I get a little scared sometimes that I'll never be able to finish alot of the comics I start (chronic pain, eye problems etc)
I think it's a bit hard for me to really pinpoint the exact moment I got inspired,,, or more precisely WHY I loved the medium so much, especially As I got older, but I think it's just a really awesome medium of storytelling!

Ayrton Senna by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara. Illustrated by Alex G. Griffiths.
Tumblr media
Age Recommendation: Early Primary Art Style: Bright Comic Topic/ Theme: Perseverance, Motorsport, Biographic Setting: Brazil, Europe Series: Little People, Big Dreams
Rating: 4/5
This is a well-written book it introduces Senna in the most child-friendly way. Encouraging perseverance and using your talents even if it takes you away from all you knew. I do like the use of a twilight rainy scene to indicate frustration and determination to improve, rain generally symbolises sadness as is the norm. The Formula One circus is simplified nicely including the relationship between Senna and teammate/ rival Prost. There is a wonderful moment included where Senna stops to help a driver who has crashed. I'm so glad that was included. My racing nerd needed to include who the driver he saved was Érik Comas at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1992. Overall I think this is another book where I knew just a little bit too much about the subject to read it objectively.
You want to know the real reason I decided to read this one? I wanted to know how they handled that death, if at all. I know that's grim. But Senna's death was brutal, untimely and influential to both the sport and his own nephew Bruno Senna (also a racer in a couple of different categories). A couple of things about that crash too. One I only found while looking for Comas' name, fellow Brazillian racer and long time fan fave Rubens Barrichello also crashed that same weekend. His crash was included in the legal proceedings. Secondly, the aforementioned Bruno Senna was at the track watching when Ayrton crashed, if you can find him talking about it it's harrowing. I have thoughts about the impact that had on his career.

Gabriel Ba is a brazillian comic artist born in 1976 who’s most famous works are the art he provided for the umbrella academy, Daytripper and Casanova we’ll be looking at the former for today
one thing initially stands out to me with Gabriel's work on UA is specifically the colour pallet many scenes and backgrounds will tend to use far warmer colours like dark reds or washed out yellows and oranges compared to colder colours, and even when scenes where there should have more colder colours used there will be times where a warmer colour will creep in anyway and sort of add to the atmosphere, I quite like this honestly, it further adds a sense of uniqueness to his work and how he draws and stylizes like his use for harder shadows which gives a lot of things in his work a greater sense of edge
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in more on Gabriel's general style it’s another very well made aspect, while he clearly has a good handle on the human anatomy he clearly does a good job in knowing how to stylise and exaggerate to keep everything it’s own flair and pizazz, his more angular line work also adds to this giving a lot of the cast this comic book hero meets team fortress 2 class that mashes together super well to create a really fun style, also as mentioned I love his use of hard shadow for his colouring and characters it really adds an edge to balance out their more cartoonish features
Tumblr media Tumblr media
next to discuss is the umbrellas academies use of time travel, the shows seems to subscribe to a belief similar to that of Schrodinger's paradox which if proven correct means that everything exists in multiple states of realities across branching universes in which decision or events that occur have a variety of outcomes which all could either mildly or major affect their ongoing timeline, meaning changing things in the past wouldn’t alter there own future but instead create a different timeline which the character would be stuck in however their original timeline would still continue to exist seperate from the new one,I think this one scene in the second back to the future says it in a more understandable way so I’ll just link it here
https://youtu.be/W3LwlSlo5cw?t=39
an example of this can be seen in the show in which one of the characters gets taken in by the FBI and their powers overload causing the building their in to explode just while Kennedys car was passing by and due to said character being Russian and accused of being a spy this caused the US to declare war on Russia in which the umbrella academy also joined in the fight which caused the Russians to drop a nuke to destroy them which also caused the US to retaliate which caused an apocalypse, 5 (one of the main characters) then went back in time to fix this which created an alternate timeline of the 60′s this clip shows that first bit of what happens
https://youtu.be/wD4b2QX5S4I
as for these shows audience as last point comparing it specifically to stranger things umbrella academy's audience may likely be more into the more chaotic nature of specific events in UA while stranger things audience may be after a more slower paced mystery horror style story, these shows have pretty different tones and plot concepts and thus attract different people
big thank you to this video by heavy spoilers who not only gave good explanations for umbrella academy's time travel beliefs but also a good summary of events in the plot: https://youtu.be/JTz2SFsliZY

Hello!
I've been using tumblr for a long time, but only recently I've felt confident enough in my english to actually try to join communities and make friends.
A little introduction... That is actually kinda really long and I’m not gonna subject y’all to it unless you want to, so here’s the tldr:
I’m an acearo, bi, cis girl (🇺🇸 she/her — 🇧🇷 ela/a).
White latina from Brazil.
I’m disabled and neurodivergent
I love sitcoms, comedy is my fav genre of fiction
and cats
and The Sims
and Turma da Mônica
and hairstyling, braids, make up
and Jane Austen
and Taylor Swift
If you like any of it, follow me!! I’ll definetely follow back. If your curious, read bellow.
I’m a 23 year old college student who is majoring in History. I’m kind of a huge nerd, I love subjects like History (duh), Literature, Politics, Philosophy, Psychology, Religion, but also Comedy (i find fascinating to analyze it, even if that kinda defeats the purpose, sue me). I kinda only watch sitcoms, actually, maybe because of how obsessed I am with the genre (more on that later).
Being Brazilian I may reblog/talk about Brazillian issues/stuff and most definetely will reblog things about Turma da Mônica (brazil’s most beloved comic book series that shaped the childhood’s of at least 3 generations now since the 60s/70s), my longest autistic special interest. Oh, yeah, I’m also neurodivergent, AuDHD and also have persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia gang rise up! or dont, ik its hard and tiresome) and fibromyalgia.
Another special interest I’m unhinged about is The Sims, I use Tumblr mostly bc of it, so I’ll definitely reblog stuff about it, maybe if everythings works out I will even create a side simblr, who knows. I love historic/fantasy gameplay, would be cool to share with people.
Idk if its a SI or just regular cat owner thing, but I’m definitely obsessed with these little guys. Speaking of cat lover, I love Taylor Swift. Like, I’m very casual about most music I consume, but she is the exception, I just... feel SO MUCH with her songs. Idk, idk... She also makes me feel things on a sapphic way, though I’m no g*ylor or hetl*r (rlly dont care about who she dates, just here for the art). But not in a wow I wanna bang this celebrity I have a crush on, cuz I dont wanna bang no one, cuz I’m acearo. Just, dont swing that way (or any way, really /hj cuz i'm actually gray-bi-romantic but its very rare, so i'm usually not swinging at all lmao).
I really like to read, but it has been tough to keep the habit with depression and disabled adult life knocking at my door and kicking my ass... currently I’m finishing reading all Jane Austen’s work (i love her sense of humor and analyses of human psychology) in portuguese, but I plan to eventually read the original stuff in english. I just really love stories and storytelling as an art form, maybe that’s why I love to write. I’m obsessed with fanfictions, actually, been writing since I was 11, never anything in english, but who knows, actually creating and participating in tumblr may be the first step. I mostly write about tv shows I’m obsessed about (though I did write some Turma da Mônica Jovem fanfiction...... thank god I deleted, it was terrible, tho in my defense I was still a preteen) and I mostly watch sitcoms so.... About that...
My favorite sitcom ever is probably How I Met Your Mother (it was literally what i needed when i was going through a really rough patch) and BoJack Horseman (yes, cartoon sitcoms totally count, shut up). I’d say my first sitcom love was The Simpsons, my biodad had a lot of dvds and tapes from the golden seasons and the fondest memories of my childhood were us watching together and laughing like two idiots. My first fandom was iCarly (i was a preteen okay), but I wasnt a big fan of the revival/reboot (yes I was team seddie, no it has nothing to do with it, I gave it a shot, but just didnt vibe with it). I also love The Office, That 70′s Show, Never Have I Ever, Community, Our Flag Means Death, The Sex Lifes of College Girls, One Day at a Time and The Good Place.
I’m pretty sure the only other shows that I got obsessed with that weren’t sitcoms were Once Upon a Time and Lucifer, two shows that were quite humorous with its wacky premises (fairytales in real life???? the devil taking a vacation in LA??? i mean, c’mon!!). I’m loving the Percy Jackson disney adaptation, it was my favorite YA book series and it always bummed me that the movie adaptation was so terrible, I'm glad we finally have a great adaptation and can't wait for more seasons to come!!!
I’m very talkative (you dont say?? 😮 /s) and a total extroverted that really loves to make friends, but my communication difficulties really do shine on long distance conversation... be phone calls, video calls, emails, text messages etc... So, although I’d love if you shoot me a message, bc I love to make friends, I also am not the best texter, so dont expect someone who always immediately answers you right back cuz they are online — please dont take it personal, it has nothing to do with who is messaging me and everything to do with my disability mkay? And yes, I am trying to work this shit out in therapy, but you know... growth aint linear. When shit hits the fan, the first thing that I lose is the ability to answer text messages 😭 idk i just stare at them, they stare at me, i combust and die, the end.
Dont know how to end this text, so, I’ll just show a pic of my cat, cuz shes everything. Bye!!

Charlie Chan. Who is fascinating, because he was created explictly to be an anti-Yellow Peril character. Unlike most Chinese characters of the time, he's both intelligent, physically capable, and unambiguously heroic. In the novels, he's simultaneously proud of being Chinese AND proud of being an American citizen. He gives orders and instructions to white people, and the narrative treats this as perfectly normal and acceptable. There's a bit in the first book, when an attempt to trap the..(1/2)
(cont'd)There's a bit in the first book where an attempt to trap the protagonist fails, because a message supposedly from Charlie clearly isn't because Charlie's English isn't broken, it's like poetry. Etc. The movies made him more stereotypical, & played by white actors in yellowface, but still, he's a heroic Chinese man, who is as capable and patriotic as any white man. Nowadays, he's thought of as racist caricature. Which he is, but still, it makes one think.
Tumblr media
I'm not nearly as acquainted with Charlie Chan as you are (and I definitely suspected he was less racist in the original books because that's nearly always the norm when it comes to pulp characters) but yeah, that "Which he is" is forever going to be the most unfortunate and saddest part of it all when it comes to Charlie Chan. For all the virtues that can be bestowed on Charlie Chan, for everything great that the character had going for him and inspired, the fact that the least offensive image of the character I could find to put here for illustration's sake is from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon kinda exemplifies the big elephant in the room when it comes to Charlie.
Charlie Chan is a great example of two things: One is the way progress is never a fixed quantity and often what was progressive and forward-thinking in it's time can become something outdated and backwards and downright offensive given enough time, and the 2nd is my constant stressing that this is all the more incentive to reclaim the pulps and either highlight or fix aspects of them, instead of dismissing every aspect of them based on the preconception that everything about it's history is unforgivably bigoted and must be handled with the nuance of a sledgehammer.
I stress time and time again the need to highlight and understand the prejudices that went into pulps, because either ignoring them or wielding them as a weapon to attack them does no favors to anyone. The pulps weren't exceptionally bigoted - look at literally any medium in it's time period and you'll find bigotry and prejudice and hatred - and they were exceptional in the number of POC heroes and heroines. Pulps were a medium of experimentation and cheap entertainment that gave way to much, much more varied kinds of protagonists than were permitted in films, serials, novels, comics and radio serials of the day. Imagine if no one was allowed to bring up and discuss superheroes without mentioning the Superman Slap-a-Jap posters or the Captain Marvel story so horrifingly racist it was recounted by an American ambassador after it deeply offended a friend's son and a major influence on the 1950s anti-comic trials. "Pulp fiction had deeply, unforgivingly racist depictions that deserve intense scrutiny and cannot be ignored" and "Pulp fiction was significantly ahead of every other medium at the time in regards to authors and editors striving to publish stories about heroic POCs, this cannot be dismissed and is something that needs to be perpetuated" are not exclusive facts. "A product of it's time" is not an excuse and never was, but it's a fact nevertheless.
Every time someone speaks favorably of Charlie Chan in any capacity, they have to start with a long preface of everything positive that the character had going for him. Yes, he's a deliberate subversion of the Yellow Peril, he's a heroic protagonist, he's plump and good-natured and humorous but far from a joke, he's friendly and pleasant and well-educated and wise, he's a good dad and family man and a terrifically sharp detective who's so good at his job he gets called to solve crimes all over the world, and none of these traits are apparent to people who have to google the character and repeteadly see a white man in awful make-up into every single image of the character, who watch the movies and cringe at the broken English. It's hardly relevant in the face of all the Asian-American critics who acknowledge the character's virtues but rightfully point out that this fortune-cookie spouting caricature, acting subservient to whites and whose virtues are based around his proximity to a white American ideal, doesn't represent them and they shouldn't pretend it does.
Which isn't to say that to like Charlie Chan is "wrong", a lot of East Asians love Charlie and the character's obviously got fans in Asian Americans. It's a complicated subject and I obviously cannot begin to vouch in a subject so heavily based around perceptions I cannot experience. And I deeply detest the idea of speaking for others on their particular experiences on this kind of matter, which is something Americans do a lot everytime they talk about representation in media.
So instead, I'm going to tackle this on a roundabout manner by going on an unrelated tangent to bring up an example of representation that isn't quite representative of what it's supposed to be, has a lot of issues that have been dissected by critics among the people it was supposed to represent, and none of that stopped the character from being popular and beloved and from being claimed anyway. And it's a Brazilian fighting game character, which means it's completely within my ballpark.

Yeah, obviously Blanka doesn't look like anyone who lives in Brazil (whatever resemblance he bears to redheaded jungle protectors of Brazilian folklore is purely accidental). Obviously neither Jimmy nor Blanka are Brazilian names or even exist in the Portuguese lexicon. Obviously there are issues in Street Fighter's approach to representation across the board, sure, and I'd actually say Laura is much worse than Blanka in that regard (again, my opinion, obviously not universal), but the fact remains that Blanka is and has always been pretty controversial. Obviously there's Brazilians who took offense to Blanka and they weren't wrong to do so, and I obviously do not speak for everyone here, that goes without saying.
Obviously the idea that Brazil's major representative in a global cast of characters, the first big name Brazilian character in videogames, is going to be a freakish jungle monster who roars and bites faces has problems, as is the fact that all the others get to be regular people representing fighting styles from their countries while Blanka doesn't. None of the Brazilian SF characters represent Capoeira, which is kinda shitty to be honest. And there's a whole stereotype of Brazil as a backwards land of beasts and savages that Blanka's creation played into. There's no shortage of ground to criticize Blanka's representation and Ono actually apologized in an interview once, but then he learned one teensy little thing:
Street Fighter is very popular on Brazil. Would you like to leave a message to the fans from there?
"Ono: Yes, I'm aware. At the time of Street Fighter II a lot of the arcade machines produced went there, so I knew we had lots of fans there. A message to Brazilians, well, I'd like to apologize. I know Blanka's a weird character and I don't want any Brazilian to feel uncomfortable with that.
When Blanka was conceived, we knew there were forests in Brazil, and so we thought he could look like that. I was actually kinda nervous knowing I'd meet Brazilian journalists. Still, this is the first Street Fighter in ten years, so we'd like all fans to play, including Brazilians, which are many.
Thanks. Well, but you should know that Brazilians love Blanka
"Ono: Ah, good! I was scared of getting beat up if I ever went to São Paulo! (laughs)"

(That's from a 2012 tv special called The Greatest Brazilian of All Time where over a million viewers voted to elect whoever they wanted, and Blanka was going to win. He was polling ahead of Aryton Senna and PELÉ, fucking Pelé, yes this happened. He wasn't even disqualified for being a cartoon character, it was an open poll, he was disqualified due to canon stating he had been born in Thailand, which I think may have been retconned since then. Again, A MILLION BRAZILLIANS voted for this contest, and Blanka was going to win.)
Blanka is great and sweet and lovable, he made the best out of the incredible shitty hands fate dealt him and became a cool and strong green man who shoots lightning and flies, a self-taught warrior who rides whales and planes to fighting tournaments, and he loves his mom and friends and kicks ass and after he's done he dances in joy and gives the kids of his village piggyback rides, and Brazil loves him. He doesn't represent any existing person or fighting style, he's rooted in a negative stereotype and incorrect assumptions, he's not even really Brazilian, and he's our boy and nobody can take him away from us.
No criticism of Blanka, no matter how in-depth or even right it is, is ever going to affect that, because regardless of what was wrong or misguided and offensive about him, we claimed him and loved him so throughly that Capcom kept playing up Brazilian representation in every subsequent game post Alpha, and because of Blanka's impact and reception in such a big game, Brazilian characters have become a staple of fighting games, and that's how we got much more diverse representatives in those games. Fighting games have more Brazilian representation than LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE on media not produced here. It started as BAD representation, with way less thought put into it than Charlie Chan, and it still mattered to a lot of Brazilians who reclaimed it and made it better than it was ever intended to be, and as a response to it, it gradually became better.
Progress is not a fixed quantity, it's an uphill battle, and it's not unwinnable. Everything's gotta start somewhere.

The Good Asian is a ongoing comic that I think does the best job I've seen yet of handling an Asian American detective protagonist, which is not really a high bar in the first place, and more to the point, The Good Asian illustrates the 2nd part: the reclaiming. The Good Asian deals a lot with the realities that a 1930s Asian-American detective would run into, the strained circumstances and relationships between said character and the world around him, because it's born from an author who took a look at Charlie Chan and Mr Moto and the like and recognized the potential in those stories that could not be fulfilled in it's time period by the people writing said stories.
The Good Asian pays little reverence to Charlie Chan, but it acknowledges that it cannot exist without Charlie Chan, and it reclaims the Charlie Chan premise at the hands of someone more adequately equipped to tell a gripping story that goes places none of Charlie's contemporaries would ever go. Regardless of how good or bad of representation Charlie Chan was, Charlie Chan mattered and was beloved and inspired a better example for others to improve on or rebel against.

I desperately wish that I could google Charlie Chan without having to look at a guy in yellowface, and the ONLY way that's going to happen is if the character ever gets meaningfully brought back and reclaimed for good by people who can meaningfully tackle the character and present him as he should have always been presented.
And then, I imagine it would be a lot easier to show people on how swell Charlie really is. A true, positive role model and hero, who no longer has to look like a gross cartoon to be able to exist at all. Who can finally be what he was always meant to be, and always was deep down.
