thinking about the utena sega saturn game again............theres so much shit in it that never gets talked about it. its not just explicitly gay (textually (nanami even calls juri the word lesbian in english) to implicitly, with room for gay readings of the antagonist) but also develops the various student council characters in ways you never got to see from utena’s pov. touga interacting with a girl who isn’t utena is even more horrific than could possibly be imagined. saionji interacting with a girl who isn’t utena or anthy is tolerable, even potentially likable (ironically he felt like the most “otome guy” route which says a lot about the guys in jpn otome games?) his route also mentions the castle in the sky, and clarifies how he wants eternity too. touga’s route is so disturbing he truly has the same mentality as akio. and utena’s route shows how she is barely beating the gay allegations + really interesting stuff about princehood, “princesses” and “evil queens”. people smarter than me could write actual essays on the archetypal relationship between utena and chigusa (+ the protagonist)

I might consider stepcest, or incest. It's not really a fetish of mine to be honest. However if it's for the plot/narration I can compromise and write for it! I absolutely adore good narration and plot! No matter how twisted, psychological horror is just that appealing to me! (OFC NEVER IRL! NEVER!)
Highschool/teen sex is alright with me i suppose, but characters have to be at least 16 or 17, I will not describe the characters with their "underdeveloped" traits, that's icky to me. And it will strictly be m!dom character and fem/gender neutral afab/m!sub reader (though m!sub is really occasional.) or dom!fem with fem only.
Piss kink, again... Not a fetish of mine. But if you guys manage to make the narrative make sense... I guess it's somewhat acceptable... I'm not fond of it though, it's almost a red zone for me.
Implied necrophilia is somewhat tolerable for the sake of plot(like if reader gets captured and embalmed and turned to a doll, it will be left vague though), but never... Actual corpse fucking, please get out. (Undead characters are fine though!)
I don't condone any grooming or pedophilia, but if it's just implications that reader got manipulated since they were small by a yandere, that's alright I suppose. Definitely no kids on my blog though! Kids are to be protected from such content, get away! Yucky people!

you didn't even need to bribe. it's not actually in the drafts of this blog so i'll write a better version
i've said it a billion times before: tsukasa is the comedic relief weirdguy, the devs basically will do anything with him so long as it's funny.
so starting with that valentine's day vlive in 2021. during the MC part of that he gets jealous that rui has been getting chocolates and tries to brag that he got lots of chocolates too but then immediately reveals that he got friendzoned by multiple girls. his voiceline that year is something about how he catches everyone's attention on vday and year round bc he's a star or something like that but anyway that whole interaction there seems to suggest he's straight lol.
however.
he's REALLY oblivious. played for comedy ofc but i see a lot of people interpret this as him being somewhere on the aro spectrum (probably not what the writers intended but fair instance of accidentally coding a character as smth). examples include: not understanding why Akito doesn't want to be seen at PXL alone with Toya in an Akito's initial 3* (second story), literally says "thank you" when Asahi basically confesses to him and completely misses the point (he actually did seem to nearly get this one for a second), and he doesn't understand why Rui's friends are impressed that he's friends the incredibly attractive Shizuku (Tsukasa is the only not-gay-coded male character who isn't attracted to Shizuku, probably because they're childhood friends. or if you want to view him as being aspec, then that works too). also when he mentions that he's friends with guys in his class who are cool and popular and good with women, Hibiki says that he was in a class with one of those guys in 1st year and is amazed that tsukasa is in that crowd now, emphasis on the "tsukasa's friends are good with women part". tsukasa's just confused about that because of course they talk to girls a lot they're in the same class.
also he usually rewrites a lot of romance plays to remove the romance. he rewrote R&J to just make it focused on the action (which is probably because he likes playing action heroes more than anything else), and he got rid of the romance plot in little mermaid because he didn't felt it was needed (this one is justified in-universe as they do fun shows for small children and don't really need the tragic romance, and also from production standpoint like you don't do that because fandom). so yeah that could again be read as him being aspec if you want but i don't think the writers intended it to be read that way, especially the R&J one that was purely for comedy.
all that said, this is an idol game, which generally run on the rule of thumb that every character is some flavour of queer, even if it's just for fanservice (i don't play enstars but from what i do know of it it falls a bit on that last point). anyway you can probably tell where this is going but he gets ship tease with rui sometimes. vast majority of this is from Rui's side but there are things like Oki ni Mesu mama
Tsukasa: Waiting for the "1, 2…" signal, holding hands with you is an act of courage for me
or that one part in pandemonium where he drops his persona for a brief second when he's impressed by rui's plan that was very much put there on purpose, or that Tsukasa and Airi's cheerful carnival team name from that event is "swayed by their partners (相方, aikata)" and when you consider that Shizuku and Airi are heavily implied to like each other, and have canonically been on a "date", that was also a Choice.
idk whether to count KING because justified by them being actors and the fang motif in the song... vampires kinda homoerotic it makes sense that the dance routine was that. also i'm not sure if the connect lives are even canon, especially the wxs one since tokishun broke character and the 4th wall.
yeah i dunno. the writers kinda just do whatever they want with him. interpret any of this how you will i'm just recounting shit from the game.

...it's not been good for Jimin either. I mean, is that possibility not obvious? That he wouldn't want his professed fans making a spectacle of him on Twitter? This is going to sound pretentious and ranty but I have no other way to express it in English: too many solo stans have such one-dimensional thinking. I mean, think about it. HYBE is a corporation and the only reputation they worry about is their reputation of generating cash. They don't care if you line a bunch of trucks on the side street or trend hashtags on Twitter. Think of the endless months solos did this for in 2020 and they received no response from the company. Likely none of the people actually calling the shots will ever see you make a racket on Twitter. The people who will see it though, are the members. Their managers and lower staff too. And the other stans in your k-pop space who already have no sympathy for him.
Solo stans are too wrapped up in righteous outrage to consider - Do any of these people actually know how Jimin feels and what his plans are with his team and company? No. None of them can actually answer that question affirmatively. They have their hopes and dreams that he'll change his mind on what he's already committed to, but he's had many chances to do that over the years and hasn't yet. And if he ever does, fine. Because he'd only leave when he wants and needs to, and that's all that matters. If Jimin needs to leave BigHit, he will. I doubt the members will ever let it come to that, but if it does, if they realize what they are is no longer tenable, none of them will stay on a sinking ship. They’re all much too selfish for that. Or you could say self-respecting. Either way if he needs to fire his manager, he will. If he needs to do whatever, Jimin is not a vegetable, he'll do what he needs and be done with it. As I've been saying, fans are free to kick up a stink to the company, but reflect on what's most effective vs what your bias will be coming online to read.
And well, if it's really just the company that was miffed, Jimin wouldn't be happy about having to do damage control either.

Of course whenever the members interact like this there's a good chance it’s fan service. But even if that’s the case, that doesn’t mean they have no choice in the matter. It doesn’t mean their fundamental relationship changes anyway. And just as I don’t absolve them of responsibility when they do things like accept song/promo choices I don’t like, I won’t absolve them of responsibility in how they interact with each other too. If we don’t limit the blame to the company when faced with scenarios we don’t like, recognizing that Jungkook for example is responsible for his actions acquiring and promoting Seven, and that Jimin is aware and responsible for his choices, then why should jikook’s interactions on WLive be a purely company-sponsored affair? Why is fan-service the most accessible explanation for why his friend and bandmate of 10 years would banter like that with him after a day like today? Why do we absolve them of any real responsibility for their words and actions in this case?
Call me delusional, but I think they have a pretty good relationship. I think Jungkook loves Jimin and it’s mutual. And I think they’re committed to their team and have the means to get what they want out of their company. If this WLive is scheduled fan-service, it certainly had the desired effect. And if not, then guess not. Overall, I don’t really care tbh.

The discourse and pushback I’ve seen on bl Twitter surrounding gmmtv’s 2023 MOCK trailer for Only Friends has been utterly fucking weird and annoying. Especially considering how people have been jumping through hoops this year defending high heat shows like Kinnporsche, Love In The Air, and Big Dragon. Like I’m really confused cause are people now all of a sudden tired of shows with high heat? Even fucking today people have been hyping up and posting all the nc scenes from the LITA special ep so why are people upset about Only Friends when the script probably isn’t even finished?
Listen my first bl was Together With Me in 2017 and even for bl 2022 standards I think it’s still pretty bold and sexually explicit. Even What The Duck (2018) is still very sexually explicit for today. I know I’m missing a couple but my point is that there have always been sexually explicit bl series. I know 2022 was a boom year for more mature and adult bl that everyone has been begging for (2023 looks like that as well) but I mean there’s always been these types of bl shows so why all of the pushback for Only Friends?
What really irritated me to write this rant was seeing the same people who defended MAME/LITA for its sexual content now have criticism for JOJO/Only Friends for its sexual content. Also, people (mainly The Eclipse stans) who’ve been criticizing MAME/LITA for its sexual content have now flipped and are defending JOJO/Only Friends for its sexual content. You see how fucking confused, annoyed, and frustrated I am.
Now I’m not going to defend Mame/ Lita or The Eclipse because I dropped both during the early episodes and I’m not a fan of Mame’s previous work but I’m going to defend Jojo cause IN MY OPINION he’s gmmtv’s only openly queer director/screenwriter who has consistently put out quality, queer, thought-provoking, progressive, entertaining, and well-written series. Just watch Friend Zone 1-2, 3 will be free, and The Player. Jojo does a phenomenal job writing and directing shows about messy queer relationships that have more to offer than just nc scenes. Don’t speak on him or Only Friends if you’ve not done your due diligence and research and watched his previous work.
Anyways, I really find it odd that people who’ve been defending MAME and LITA for its high sexual content are now upset that Only Friends used sex to sell their show in the MOCK trailer . Now I do think there’s a valid critique for how now in 2022/2023 bl producers are using sex to market and sell their shows but this argument is extremely hypocritical coming from people who defend MAME and LITA when that’s how MAME has always marketed and sold all her shows as well. If you’ve sat there and enjoyed Mame’s shows (who IN MY OPINION has relied heavily on chemistry, fanservice, and nc scenes to appeal to viewers cause her writing is weak) but now have “critique” for Jojo and Only Friends well I got news for you the call is coming from inside the house. If anything Mame is the main contributor to now more bl producers using sex to sell cause they’ve seen how popular it has made her shows.
Another thing that’s annoying me are mainly The Eclipse/FirstKhao stans who complained every day about people fetishizing LITA for its sexual content and 0 plot while claiming The Eclipse was better for its lack of sex and “better” plot have now switched and are defending Only Friends for its sexual content. It’s very clear bl fans will switch their stance on a topic if it means supporting and defending their favs. FirstKhao stans were just championing on how pure, wholesome, and innocent The Eclipse was and how it was better than LITA. Now all of a sudden FirstKhao stans are defending the integrity of the sexual content in Only Friends. Imma be honest, if FirstKhao weren’t in the cast or if MAME was the screenwriter for Only Friends 100% guarantee these firstkhaos stans would not be changing their stance on “purity” and defending Only Friends this much. If you’re going to stand firm on a topic it shouldn’t change based on if your favs are involved or if you hate the people involved. The same energy needs to be kept for everyone. Now all of a sudden Only Friends isn’t selling sex but LITA was? Both shows used sex to market.
Now I understand people having more faith in Jojo than Mame cause of their difference in screenwriting and filmography which I do as well but Jojo does work for gmmtv and they have a track record of fucking up potentially good shows. Also MAME could always improve on her next show which many people who like her work claim she has already which is fine. I think people over criticize MAME as well as she has her strengths cause if not people wouldn’t tune in and love her shows like that do. But like I said before, MAME is one of the main reasons sex sells and marketed in bl look at what the success of TharnType did to the industry. I wouldn’t be surprise if more directors like Jojo followed her blueprint.
As mentioned before, there’s several valid criticisms on the negative effects of marketing and selling shows based off sex and nc scenes to appeal to more viewers. However, some of these criticisms are on the viewers cause producers can statistically figure out which types of scenes are replayed the most and see how fans interact on social media to certain scenes and in turn give viewers more of what they want to make money. If viewers are mad at bl producers sex marketing their shows maybe interrogate how y’all interact with these shows and certain scenes than maybe things will change.
Also, this purity vs sex-obsessed conversation about bl is inconsequential. Purity does not equal a good show and it’s equally not wrong to like like more fluffy BLs. “Sex-obsessed” is not bad especially concerning fictional shows and fictional characters. I mean erotica has been a popular genre for centuries. What’s exactly matters is production, storytelling, directing, character/plot development, acting, etc. Shows can be “pure” or “sex-obsessed” but what makes them good or bad is determined by the things I just listed.
Another thing I want to say is people shouldn’t be complaining this much about thai BLs in 2022/2023 when damn near 30+ different BLs from different countries come out every damn week. People tend to hyper focused on Thailand cause their the biggest contributor in asia but there’s so many other countries that have phenomenal mlm shows. Instead on complaining about Thailand all day broaden your horizon. 
I wanna end this saying I hope gmmtv still lets Jojo tell Only Friends the way he wanted and intended instead of dumbing his work down so he doesn’t come off “sex-obsessed” (which his previous his works never were anyway). Jojo is an openly gay man who has always spoke up about queer rights/issues in his previous works and I don’t expect that to change with Only Friends.

oh im sad that you dislike the new additions to the jaedo tag :( hopefully you'll find something to your tastes. but to put my defender-of-fanfic-writers cap on, in aus some degree of ooc is completely understandable. because they aren't the real jaedo, and aus bend the reality of the characters to fit narratives. just dont make them 100% ocs cuz then its no fun anymore. i guess im lenient hehe. but one of the reasons i rarely read canon compliant is because the ooc becomes too glaring in that case. aus have wiggle room.
about dotae: they were only winning the poll until the jaeyongers got wind of it, then literally jaeyong surpassed everyone else by a huge margin and when i saw it last/near the end it was almost 5k votes. dotae are too platonic to be a strong contender. the friendship rings felt like fanservice and never mentioned or used again since then. feels... contrived? they'll always have their moments though bc they are besties, so shippers will be fed. at least their interactions are not as awkward as some other ships.
now lets get cracky. what is up with jaerose? since you keep up with jaehyun, i wonder if you know how this ship started? (i searched the blog for it and only found one post about it). because i cant trace it back to any particular moment. is it just pure delusion? it seems so popular. there are so many incredible edits of them lol. they actually would look cute together, if jaehyun wasn't so... obviously head over heels for a man.
anyway jaedo is in the small moments people dont usually catch, not on the overt fanservice idols do purposely. that's why it isnt that popular, i guess. which is fine in the end of the day. they have each other and that's what truly matters.
Of course AU setting will change some character traits or the level of their expression (nurture), that's the point of an AU (what if). However, certain core characteristics (nature) should always stay for a character with a name of a real person/existent character to be recogniseable.
It's interesting that you call DoTae "too platonic", when I had debates here on the blog about Taeyong being gay/bi and being in love with Doyoung. DoTae is a ship like any other, there are shippers who believe in the couple (on the level shippers usually do, "in pretence") or who fight over top/bottom division.
Fanservice for 6k USD? Lol. Doyoung wore the ring for a long time and posted a photo of it when he wrote about Taeyong staying behind at home and healing. Tae took the ring for an important photoshoot. However, Tae didn't like that Do used the rings to cover up JaeDo, he wanted smth for them only. I guess with time Do got the memo. I don't think Do fulfilled Tae's original desire to have friendship rings correctly (maybe the model, maybe choosing them alone without Tae, showing it to fans, gifting them before going away to spend time with Jae, etc).
NCT 127 and BP debuted same year, as same gen and from the big3 neos are shipped with BP girls. I think JaeRose gained following when Jae hosted on Inkigayo. He looked at her, she looked at him, her friends giggled knowingly... Some ships gain popularity just because, without a real reason, just right place and time, good content creators, bored fans, "they look good together", whatever.

entire xenoblade 3 game spoilers btw, but current xenoblade 3 dlc wave 2 impressions having done first few Ino quests (as in everything that’s not ascension quest) and the first 6 challenge battles on normal (so I could get everyone’s swimsuits, naturally) are. I like Ino the character a decent amount, she’s solidly fun and despite being rather overdesigned compared to most other characters it still does feel like she fits in. Moreover I like what she represents in terms of being a DLC fanservice character, we know artificial blades can still exist and getting lots of haha blades and drivers convo is fun without breaking the game. I understand why they relegated her to DLC since she does push the boundary a little in a game that otherwise only strongly alludes to 1 and 2 through Melia and Nia, yk keep Ino somewhat separate from the otherwise extremely beginner friendly main narrative, but I do think this works as a good compromise in a sense. I think I explained that like shit but whatever. Heroes don’t feel super impactful in battles so no strong opinions on her there, and haven’t actually played the class otherwise yet, but getting stronger on death is a weird one. Inoswap is also kind of an unfortunate thing - since it doesn’t apply to the playable characters you’re just making a hero stronger when heroes are already not super important to begin with. Inoswap is also kind of unfortunately undercooked, it’s basically a glorified linear upgrade thing. I suppose they already had customisable class covered with Soul Hacker, and tbf I’m glad maxing Ino won’t be the nightmare that maxing Poppi was, but they still could’ve and probably should’ve done a bit more to make Inoswap matter. Although as a sidenote since Ino is storywise like a remnant of a pure Xenoblade 2 concept I wonder if dlc 3 hero would be that for Xenoblade 1. Silhouette looks like a healer and more Keves healers would be nice so maybe lol.
As for challenge battle, I think there’s less I can say right now. I did only the first 6 battles and only on normal mode, but I went in without swapping my classes from what anything was already on and didn’t have any trouble beating the S rank time limits by several minutes. And I know that Enel seems to have done the same for every challenge available on hard mode as well. Which kinda doesn’t bode well, really. There’s a lot that can really go into truly maxing yourself out in Xenoblade 3 and lots of customisation accordingly - challenge battles are a great way conceptually to really push you towards taking full advantage of all that. But if it’s not creating interesting or challenging battle scenarios then it’s... not something as intense as a “waste” but definitely want to wish for more. Especially given how robust 2′s challenge battles were. Hopefully the new challenge battle rules in wave 3 capitalise on the potential a lot more. Think that’s all I’ve got anyway. End post.

left wing ppl and feminists embracing purity culture in any form is so fucking annoying to me because like, I get it. I probably have a stronger drive towards that type of outlook than almost anyone else. I see something I disagree with I instantly go like “well that’s immoral and you’re a bad person if you like things I don’t like and don’t like things I like”. ‘like’ in this context referring to like appreciating from an “elevated” standpoint. but I know that that’s irrational and bullshit and just a kneejerk reaction so I don’t bring it up because there’s no use provoking people in a completely unproductive way.
maybe I can have this outlook cuz I’m bipolar & know what psychosis feels like, and can connect the dots between those two affective experiences. but even then, it’s just fucking normal to be a pretentious asshole who wants everyone to be the same as you, but no one gains anything from anyone actually just publicly being that way. there are some things that are normal and don’t benefit anyone.
anyway, with the preamble out of the way I saw a video talking about phil fish that went over how he was against gamergate and the guy making the video basically went like “anita sarkeesian was very insightful, it’s just when she missed she really missed” and then played a clip of her going like “I don’t want to play video games where you shoot people, that’s gross” and it’s like. yeah it is gross that’s the entire appeal. the things that are gross to you in a bad way are gross to another person in a good way. like I fucking love blood death and violence in my video games because it *is* fucked up sicknasty shit. and I can admit that, most people can’t they have to go like no it’s actually really pure video games don’t cause violence. shut the fuck up I do not care at all.
everything just devolves into two different groups of moralists getting mad at each other because they’re moralizing about opposing view points I want all of you to stop, and if I can, you can too.
also on a related note I saw a post on r/196 when I was going to sleep the other day that was essentially saying that onimai is child porn. and like jesus christ please go back to calling anime watchers pedophiles or something that like actually tries to downplay your perspective. like yeah high school girl fanservice isn’t great or anything, but like the sheer fucking gall on these people to compare something that relatively innocuous to like actual heinous shit makes me want to kill murder kill kill.

So, about the sequel...
I HAVE SEEN SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2.
My boyfriend and I were worried about this little coronavirus thing you might have heard of, so we decided to go to a midday Monday showing. This ended up being perfect. There were like 15-20 people at our showing - a small enough number for everyone to spread out, but enough for crowd reactions. (And boy, did that make that ending special. But we'll get to that.)
The short, spoiler-free version of my thoughts: It was great. It felt like the fully realized version of this take on Sonic. The weird human stuff is still there, but I thought it was more fun this time around, and the Actual Sonic Content is cranked up to 11. Many of the big setpieces in this movie are just pure, unadulterated Genesis and Adventure era fanservice, and I am here for it.
...BUT, at the same time, I get the lukewarm reviews it's gotten from critics. If the words "Master Emerald" and the sight of Tails flying the Tornado mean nothing to you, then you won't get as much out of this. It is, in fact, another blockbuster action movie where fully CGI characters fight over a macguffin of ultimate power (that wasn't mentioned at all in the first film). The script also has some oddities, and the constant one-liners don't always land. This is by no means high art
But goddamn, I had so much fun with it. (And for the record, so did Anthony, despite being an extremely casual fan of Sonic.) If you haven't seen it, go see it! If you have, though, let's dig into the specifics. From here on this beefy post will contain full spoilers for literally everything in the movie.
So let's jump right into the main attractions, shall we?
Tails
I wasn't sure how the movie would handle Tails. It was impossible for his origin story as a kid who followed Sonic around to work with Sonic spending ten years on Earth, and he already seemed to be the confident inventor he would come to be depicted as later.
It turns out, I was pleasantly surprised! Tails does sort of still have his old backstory, in that he grew up looking up to Sonic after hearing all the stories about him being the fastest thing alive. He's also here as a messenger warning Sonic about Knuckles and his search for the Master Emerald, which is on Earth. (Side note: this reveal makes everything about Longclaw sending Sonic to Earth make a hell of a lot more sense.) Because he's only here as a messenger, Tails still gets to have his little arc where he starts out as the timid sidekick in Sonic's shadow and learns to believe in his own strengths. It's really nice. Tails also gets the most heartwarming scene with him and Sonic going to bed. God, what a sweet little moment. Tails is so cute in this. I'm glad they leaned into him being the sweet kid sidekick instead of trying too hard to make him a smartass
Of course, he does end up getting overshadowed by you-know-who for a lot of the movie, but I thought the time Tails is allotted here was mostly used well, and Colleen is good as always. (I was a little worried hearing Regular Tails next to all the other characters with different voices would sound odd, but it felt natural to me.)
That said, what Tails does get to do primarily includes the Siberia segment, which is... odd. As soon as they walked in I felt like the movie had turned into the SpongeBob movie all of a sudden, and the climax of that sequence only added to that. (But it exists to let Sonic and Tails bond as friends, so I definitely wouldn't cut it. It's just kinda odd.) It was also one of several sequences where you can really see the cracks in the script, because like. Sonic is like "oh no, the map!" but he could just... go grab it with his super speed? Moments like this definitely didn't ruin the movie for me, but they're worth mentioning for a fuller picture
Anyway, the real star of the movie...
Knuckles
Knuckles is so good in this y'all
As expected from the trailers, Knuckles is portrayed as an absolute powerhouse who TROUNCES Sonic in their first fight. What surprised me, though, is just how many jokes they gave Knuckles.
I really liked how they handled him, though! He's competent in a fight and a genuine threat to Sonic, but he's still a lovable doofus at heart. Instead of just playing him up as a gullible idiot, though, they focused on him being an honorable warrior from another world who just doesn't get Earth stuff, and who trusts people because he comes from a culture where your word is your bond. (I might compare him to Thor.) It's a tricky needle to thread, but I think they did great. Idris Elba is great as this extremely confident straight man who's so serious at times that it wraps around to being funny, but never to the point that Knuckles comes off as a buffoon
After the scene with the echidnas in the first movie, I was also really curious how they'd handle Sonic and Knuckles' dynamic. What they landed on might honestly be my favorite take on their first meeting? Instead of simply being lied to by Eggman, Knuckles is after Sonic because of the established rivalry between Longclaw's owls and the echidnas over control of the Master Emerald. And, in fact, Robotnik chooses to ally himself with Knuckles (who finds him on the mushroom planet at the start of the film) because they have a common enemy in Sonic. He doesn't even learn about the Emerald until later, at which point betraying Knuckles to take it becomes his goal
We also learn that the rest of Knuckles' clan only died in battle in the modern day (possibly in the fight scene at the start of the first movie? I might've missed them saying that explicitly), explaining how he came to be the last of his kind. And over time, Sonic starts to bond with Knuckles because he realizes that they both lost their families to the war between the owls and the echidnas. It's a small touch, but in a movie with so many nods to Sonic Adventure 1 (even without Tikal or Chaos being part of the story), this definitely echoes its core thesis about breaking those historical cycles of violence
Overall, Tails and Knuckles were spot on to me. After how much Sonic and Robotnik were adjusted in the first movie to squeeze them into a more conventional Hollywood storytelling mold, I was ecstatic with how faithful these two were
Speaking of echidnas, though...
Interlude: The elephant in the room
Let's get this over with quickly. Over the weekend, Penders has begun tweeting about looking into legal action against Paramount. He believes that Enerjak and Locke were included without his permission. I reserved my personal judgment on this until after seeing the movie
I can now officially say he's full of shit
Even as someone who agrees that a big chunk of Sonic Chronicles was based on his Knuckles comics, there's almost nothing here. Like, yeah, I can get Archie readers going "huh, this kinda reminds me of the comics!" Seeing Knuckles have a dad is instantly going to remind me of Locke as well. But they have only the most basic similarities.
The character Penders is calling "Enerjak" is not an echidna scientist who's turned into an ancient Egypt-themed tyrant, he's a nameless typical echidna warrior with the vague Maya aesthetic from Sonic Adventure who's shown harnessing the power of the Master Emerald in a battle. Knuckles' nameless dad is also just another generic echidna warrior, not a mad scientist who experimented on Knuckles, and he looks nothing like Locke. His muzzle fuzz is a little thicker to give him the appearance of facial hair, but it's certainly not Locke's white beard, and he's sure as shit not running around in a lab coat. He gets one brief flashback scene where he tells a young Knuckles to stay home from the fight where the rest of his kind died, and that's it. Both characters appear for maybe fifteen seconds each
I really think Ken should've actually seen the damn movie before running his mouth, because there's basically nothing supporting his claims, and he's going to look like a goddamn idiot if he takes this to court. Now, moving on!
Eggman
I liked Carrey's Robotnik more in this one! The combination of him going full cartoon character and getting the proper makeover really works. (And he's flying around in the Eggmobile for most of the movie, too!) It was much, much, much easier for me to see him as Robotnik this time around, instead of just Jim Carrey
Him absorbing the power of the Master Emerald directly and basically going super for the climax was a fun take on things, too. Carrey's observations about him wanting to be a robot are very clear here. And having him use magic to build a big fucking Death Egg Robot out of the vehicles around him was a clever way to explain the setpiece in a grounded setting where he can't just have a city-sized fortress pumping out giant robots. Him saying that he wants to enslave all of humanity and make them service his machines probably came out of nowhere for general audiences, and is another point in the "this script isn't amazing" column for critics, but as a fan, yep! That sure is Eggman right there!
He also flosses at Knuckles one time and god, it's so good. I know Sonic flossed in the first movie, but it still managed to catch me off guard because he just fucking does it out of nowhere
The other humans
They also felt like a step up from the first film to me! The biggest change: Tom being a cop literally does not come up ever lmao. He's basically just Sonic's dad here. And this normal-ass guy being the adoptive father to the little zinger-spouting Looney Tune that is movie Sonic feels kinda weird, but eh, if he has to be in these movies then this is an improvement to me
This stuff will probably be hit or miss for most people, but the human cast is thankfully a fairly minor part of the film compared to the first, and it just feels like they're having more fun with it, even if it sometimes feels like you're watching a completely different movie. They got more laughs out of me this time. (Although the ring mixup was definitely another bizarre script moment to me. Why did Tom not just say they had the wrong ring, instead of having that little argument and then punching the groom???)
Tom in particular is a very, very minor part of the film compared to the first. For critics who latched onto that as the heart of the first film, I can see why they might get disappointed to see his relationship with Sonic sidelined hard. But also... I hated Tom? Yeah, James Marsden was fine, but I hated the whole premise of Sonic having to go on a road trip with a boring-ass speed trap cop whose greatest aspiration in life is to be a cop in a bigger town. That's the complete polar opposite of what I want out of Sonic. So having less Tom, with no focus on him being a cop, and Tom's scenes being funnier (imo) is a huge improvement to me
There's also an odd stretch of maybe 5-10 minutes towards the end of act two where, out of nowhere, Maddie (Tom's wife) and Rachel (her sister) basically become the heroes? I was like wait, what the fuck is happening. Rachel of all characters gets this whole little character arc in the span of a few consecutive scenes. It's almost like they inserted an unrelated short film into the middle of this Sonic movie. But said segment still got some genuine laughs out of me, so I'll take it. Again, it felt like they were having more fun with it this time
Really, though, it turns out there was exactly one word they had to say to make me like the human stuff more, and that word is "GUN."
Yes, GUN is in this as much more than a background Easter egg! It turns out the division was formed after the events of the first movie, and none other than The Olive Garden Guy himself has been retconned into being the GUN Commander. (And yes, they joke about the name. The Commander's giddy little response that shows he's just so proud of the name made it land.) Literally just making "GUN tries to capture Sonic and Tails" the crux of that human-heavy Hawaii sequence made it work way better for me by turning it into something recognizably Sonic
The climax
After that brief detour in Hawaii, Sonic and Knuckles have their showdown over the Emerald, it's a really good fight, Eggman betrays Knuckles, and then it's off to Green Hills for the final showdown against the Death Egg Robot. Which is really where the whole film comes together. It's a very fun battle where Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all get their moments to shine. Knuckles in particular is so fun as an ally from this point onwards. Him just freefalling backwards off of the Tornado was so funny
And, of course, as the grand finale. It happens.
Super Sonic
Super Sonic was done perfectly. It appropriately feels like this is the moment at which the movie's Sonic comes into his own as the confident hero we know from the games. It's just... it's so cool. There isn't much else to say. I'm so glad they went all the way. And afterwards we get a brief fakeout where Knuckles is like "that's not the same Sonic anymore" due to the power of the Emeralds and I'm like, wait... StC Super Sonic??? They don't actually do this, but I wonder if the thought crossed their minds with that evil Super Sonic fakeout. There's a surprising amount of stuff with StC vibes in these movies. (Regardless, Sonic giving up that power after winning was a very Sonic move.)
Then we get the wrap up and a very cute baseball scene with the boys. I was so glad Knuckles got to stay with his new friends instead of walking off into the sunset to guard the Master Emerald alone. And that's it! Movie over. What a fun time
Oh, except...
The tease
Look. I didn't get spoiled, but people have been freaking out about the tease since it came out. I'd speculated before that the only characters left for a big crowd-pleasing tease would be Amy, Metal, and Shadow, and Shadow is the most popular of those three. People have been hyping themselves up at the thought of the third movie doing SA2 literally since the first set photos came out showing the GUN vehicles. So it didn't exactly surprise me to see Shadow at the end
What did surprise me... was that they're not just including Shadow willy-nilly. It looks like they're going all the way.
It's a short tease where Shadow doesn't even speak (I'm sure they're trying to get someone big to voice him - I want Keanu), but it speaks volumes. I had assumed that Shadow might get tossed in similar to how he was handled in Boom. No backstory, just a dark rival for Sonic. Nope!! Not at all!!! I was fucking delighted. They aren't backing down. I don't know how they'll handle it - lord knows what they'll do with Maria, or if they'll ditch the ARK and keep it on Earth - but Shadow is a test tube baby created by a Robotnik 50 years ago that the government has been covering up. And there he is. In the tube. That's Shadow.
Man, Shadow isn't even my favorite character, but as a fan of that era of Sonic I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooo unbelievably down for this. I am so glad they're leaning into even the "cringey" parts of Sonic instead of backing down and only doing the Genesis era stuff. I cannot fucking believe three years out from that heinous first trailer that felt like a Sonic movie in name only, we're getting this. The reveal of a live action Shadow. A major tentpole blockbuster action film is going to come out in the year of our lord 2024 with Shadow the Hedgehog as the marquee character. Critics are going to have to review a film based at least in part on Sonic Adventure 2. (It is simultaneously going to get the worst critic reviews and be the most fun of the three, I'm calling it now.) What a world. The hype is beyond real. And not just for me. Shadow got some big reactions at the tiny midday showing I was at, too, from kids and adults alike. I am so, so happy I was able to make it to the theater to experience that firsthand
(And hey, let's hope Rouge shows up in that Knuckles streaming show next year. Can't have Shadow without his partner in crime. And also I still just have no idea who else they would put in that show lmao, she's the only other real rival Knuckles has)
Stray thoughts
Tails and Knuckles both finding Sonic in the same scene (with the returning Robotnik there as well) felt kinda cramped, and I can see non-fans thinking it's too much too fast when Sonic's new best friend immediately shows up and starts talking about the Master Emerald
There are two jokes in like the first ten minutes where it sounds like someone is going to say "shit" but then they say a different SH word and I was like yep this sure was written by Hollywood screenwriters
Sonic using his super speed to disassemble the stolen bank truck was a fun use of his powers, and I loved the SA1 shot allusions throughout that sequence
People speculated that Longclaw was inspired by the owl imagery in various ancient ruin levels in the Genesis games, and they lean into this! The classic owl face blocks show up
I loved that the Mean Bean coffee shop Stone runs ends up being a secret Robotnik base. (And, yeah, Stone was fun in this. His first scene got a big laugh out of the audience.)
It seems like Tails' catchphrase in this is him going "only SONIC THE HEDGEHOG could [do thing]" in a half-laughing impressed way and like, I get that it's to show that he practically worships the guy but it did feel kinda forced lol
Sonic calls his Super mode the "golden god look" in one joke at the end and I was like oh my god he's Dennis Reynolds
Overall, I loved it. It's far from a perfect movie, absolutely, and I think the low fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes is fair. But god, seeing all that Sonic iconography done right, when paired with genuinely good takes on these characters? It just hit right
This movie is still weird. It still has jokes that whiff. It still has incongruous human subplots (that will probably feel like complete filler if you aren't a Modern!Sonic nerd who lights up at any mention of GUN). It's big and dumb and loud. Its emotional moments rely on broad, cliché statements about what it means to be a hero. But where the first movie felt like a painfully generic family road trip adventure film with Sonic and Eggman tacked on, a film that was only saved by the last minute redesign, this one felt like a Sonic movie. It embraced what I like about the series instead of shying away from it. It's still not my ideal Sonic movie - that would be, you know. A cartoon. With the whole cast. But if we're gonna get these live action ones? This is more like it. Can't wait for the third one and that Knuckles show

Recently I saw Naruto account official on Twitter, post hinata confession and she talking about her ninja way. People and hinata fans take into too much account and admiration hinata confession in pain war.
When I read that chapter again after a lot of years, I saw how selfish it was, but people see it as a proof of pure love, and they selectively forget for example sasuke sacrifice in war arc.
So, what are the differences between these 2 moments? And how they both impacted on naruto since both moments made him released tails(with hinata one is obvious is not just about her but anyway)?
I think the purpose of these advertising gimmicks is to show how NH is the loveliest canon couple in the entire series to bait new audience or as a fanservice. Couple of days ago, in one of the Twitter Polls... Sakura came out as this popular character as compared to Nami from One Piece... And According to Boruto polls conducted by ViZ Media, Sasuke comes behind Sakura and Hinata in popularity... (***Face Palming Hardly***)... It's best to ignore these Click-Baits altogether.

Sasuke’s sacrifice... You mean the Land of the Waves (LoTW) Arc??? And Naruto didn’t release any tails during that Arc... It was only during his battle with Orochimaru in Part 2, he released his 4th Tail.

Of Course, Yes... There are some noticeable difference between what happened in the Pain Arc & in the LoTW and Sasuke-Sai Arc.

He jumped in front of Naruto because he simply can’t help it.... It’s out of Instinct... It’s out of his uncontrollable desperation to save Naruto at all costs despite having a Personal Goal to achieve.
He already started to love him unconditionally without expecting any reciprocation from Naruto... And that’s why his body moved on it’s own.

On my First Watch.... I thought Naruto’s power awakening was kind of Random... I just didn’t know the meaning behind it... But then during the Forest of the Death... Orochimaru gives this interesting information...
“When your emotions are heightened.... The power of nine-tails overflows...”
That’s when I wondering What was the reason behind Naruto’s strong emotion during LoTW Arc.... But then I forgot it... [[Not to mention... Naruto evoked the power of Kyuubi in that Forest of the Death scene... to protect Sasuke... LOL]]
Then only I understood the Reason....
That Naruto knew Sasuke from his childhood... And that’s why he could feel strongly about Sasuke...
Whereas with Hinata there was no reason... She was just some random girl...

During this chapter, Boruto shit was already planned and the Last Movie was ready to be released...... But somehow he needed a Genjutsu to remember Hinata’s selfish proposal...
The Author was just delightfully on a Mocking Ride with NH...

I'm on the fence with some characters, like I just don't see/feel the appeal of them, which is fine. Like I guess it's my brain and how it works, but I don't think it's necessary for Dan to have a redemption arc or even a contiunation, bc like most of the 'event' episode villains are extremely over powered one offs that don't really mean anything to me as characters. And Dan as a character isn't nearly as interesting as he is just a straight up villain. Like do I really think there needs to be three Dannys? Absolutely not! That is... Completely unnecessary and shows complete weakness as a character writer. Yes, im including Danielle (she will get her own post eventually when my thoughts are clear)
I used to think the ultimate enemy was by far the weakest episode to air, like right next to phantom planet. I know that is some fighting words, I've mellowed out in my age, but I still wouldn't say Ultimate Enemy breaks the my top ten. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone as their gateway either.
I would label Ultimate Enemy as a Fanservice episode first and foremost. Youre basically seeing these already cool teens as even cooler adults-- like hello. And as a seven year old, that type of speculative storytelling was fun.
If I could compare it to anything I would compare it to the Dragon Ball Z Broly movies. Everybody loves the visuals and the fights, but no one ever like... Talks about how dumb Broly's origin story is. Broly as an infant basically got annoyed by a baby crying next to him and vowed to kill him as an adult.
I think the Ultimate Enemy as a story introduces many exciting concepts. Like two different ghost halves can fuse to make a whole ghost (like think of the potential there), and of course Clockwork. The fenton technology helped danny in a major way, which in a way symbolizes that even in the most hopeless situation, his family would always be there for him. As well as the idea that yes these characters do have the potential to die, and do! (So any post canon fuckery that the ghosts are interdimensional beings is invalid :))
I think the best concept that ultimate enemy raises is that Danny always has the potential to be evil within him. He just lacks the motivation. But as I've mentioned in my previous posts Danny isn't really a typical super hero, hes kind of an asshole to his classmates and uses the justification that his classmates hate him anyway-- so why not get impulsive revenge? Like hes not a morally grey or morally complex character by any means. He's simply an impulsive kid with anger issues. The horror comes from the fact that he has the unspoken god like power that he can choose to unleash on his classmates whenever he gets shorted tater tots in the cafeteria that day.
Dan needs to be evil for that horror to work. That isn't to say I don't think he could ever like change, but he's fine as is. His entire narrative purpose is to be evil so we could see a speculative take on what it would be like if Danny ever did fall of the deep end. (Which I would argue Vlad already did in his debut episodes, but ILL PUT IT IN ANOTHER POST GODDAMNIT)
Then there are the things that keep this episode from being in my favorites. And it purely has to do with the fact that this episode completely breaks the inherent tragedy behind the ghost concept and the world building. The ghosts still technically AGE in the ghost zone... Which is like... No they don't... Are you telling me Sidney Poindexter just has an amazing skin care routine to look sixteen for fifty years? Or Eudora and her brother, what's up with them? Also the ghosts can have children. Which... Is a choice. I mean the joke about the box ghost going on ghost p90x and becoming a fuck monster is still funny but do I think it's funny enough to snap the entire world in half? No. (Yes, the Box ghost's dick broke the canon. That's what im saying.) Dan is still tied to this concept because he ages too. Or you could argue Danny's ghost half took Vlad's middleagedness, I guess??
Also like the splitting of Dannys ghost and human half only works for this episode. Because in the dream catcher ep, it turns out if left unattented Danny's ghost half is basically superman and Danny's human half is the scum of the earth.
And again Dan, is an interesting concept, but the fact that he manifests directly as a concept of Danny choosing the "easy" way in academics was the completely wrong way to show Danny's vices. Especially when he has so many vices.

(hi, it’s me again pretending as if i didn’t go on an unannounced hiatus).
yes, i’m back...for now. i’m not sure for how long. as i’m too busy these days, but i wanted to specifically make this post because it’s been bothering me for a while now. someone mentioned this in the woosan tag as well, but it’s...
non-atiny’s(and some anti-shipping atiny) who constantly feel the need to expose woosan as some cleverly put together ship that was carefully manufactured by the company. i’ve seen so many titles on youtube and posts on twitter saying how:
“woosan is obvious fanservice” and “woosan; a prime example of queerbating in kpop”
i’ve never seen a ship be so criticized for being ‘out there’ and ‘in your face’. i’ve made a post on fanservice before but this post will mainly be focused on why i think it’s completely unfair, dishonest, homophobic, and antagonistic to view their relationship as manufactured and fake. and before you go, ‘i’m sure they’re good friends but all that other stuff is clearly done by the company.’ and don’t get me wrong, bc kq is very much aware of the ships and do try to profit off of fanservice...like every other company. but the clearest indicator of this not being MOSTLY all fanservice is something i’ve mentioned many times before.
1. the rest of the ships in ateez not being anywhere near the intimacy and skinship as woosan.
2. body language.
3. the members THEMSELVES explaining their dynamics.
4. kq not FORCING ships.
ever since predebut and debut there’s ALWAYS been three main ships in ateez. seongjoong, yungi, and ofc woosan.
as you could see, woosan was definitely thee most popular ship. however, i do believe their popularity grew over time because during the early era i’m sure seongjoong dominated, even on fanfic sites they dominate the amount of fanfics written about them. however, woosan’s clear comfort and intimacy with each other made them more popular among atiny’s and even non atiny’s they even had some taekookers saying their ship was realer and that’s saying something xD.
something people really, no i mean REALLY need to understand is...doing fanservice does not invalidate an entire relationship.
there are plenty of celeb couples who enjoy publicly dating and showing affection.
then comes the argument of well, “if they were real they wouldn’t be so obvious about it.”
this statement bothers me because, people who believe that showing too much skinship is fanservice but then they’ll turn around and say at the same time it’s just culture???
it’s fair to see them doing their fake love dance routine and going THAT’S FANSERVICE. but looking at those moments and going ‘nah, their entire friendship gotta be fanservice.’ is delusional to me, as u like to call us shippers.
even if you do not ship them romantically, it’s odd to me that people see two same-sex idols expressing comfortability, intimacy and skinship together and feel like if they’re too open about it or if it looks too gay then it’s....fake? even tho fans love to say it’s just apart of their culture. but if it gets too gay, then it’s fanservice.

just because they’re completely comfortable with being intimate doesn’t mean they’re being forced to act that way...it literally just means they ARE that way.
i constantly put emphasis on being comfortable with skinship and intimacy bc, to me that’s just not something the company can force. body language is a reaction from your true emotions and your inner most thoughts. IT IS THE FOUNDATION TO FIGURING OUT WHAT A PERSON TRULY FEELS INSIDE AS THEIR EMOTIONS WILL ALWAYS TRANSLATE THROUGH THEIR BODY. if u are uncomfortable it will be revealed through body language. and i know a ton of seongjoong shippers are gonna hate me for this, but they are a prime example of this. trust me i’m not here to start a ship war, i am purely just using them as an example of discomfort in body language.
body language is something a company cannot control.
seongjoong show definite signs of being uncomfortable with intimacy, heck shippers use that one moment seonghwa expressed sadness bc hj hugged the other members and not him as a shipping moment lol. but even when they do hug it looks uncomfortable. my guess is bc hj is not good at expressing his feelings and isn’t a touchy person. and even tho seonghwa is comfortable with skinship, it’s understandable that it can become uncomfortable for him bc of the things i mentioned before as well as the power dynamics and age difference between them.
and here i am going to be stoned bc, i have more to say about seongjoong(don’t kill me).
bc something the company also can’t control is what OR who the members hang out with OUTSIDE of group activities. so that’s why i’m also mentioning that i also don’t think seongjoong is as close as shippers think they are as...seonghwa mostly hangs out with woosan. and it is almost always mentioned how often woosan hang out together off camera. even early on. woosan hung out so much that it literally came to a point where yeosang felt like his bestfriend was taken from him.
can we mention again how happy that makes san? and let’s not forget the moment woo said seonghwa was into him, but san was like. ‘you’re into me tho’ and they BOTH tried to gloss over that.

lol. people love to say how much san’s whipped for woo, but woo’s probably even more whipped.

we can even talk about a more recent moment. the ateez debate about mint chocolate. dunno what’s with these kpop idols debating about mint choco ‘cause bts did it too. lol. anyway, they ended up talking about the group dynamics. and how woosan again are always together.
i-i’m sorry, but does moment remind y’all of a past moment? LMFAO. seonghwa’s feeling yeosang’s pain.
seonghwa’s just like woosan says they’re tired of each other but can’t detach themselves. and here’s more evidence that the company isn’t forcing them. for those who thinks kq has some masterplan when it comes to promoting ships.
when they talk about their dynamics, jongho says he feels left out but hj exposes him and says, ‘we’ve tried to pair him with someone but he(jongho) just doesn’t do it’
so this just solidifies my statement from earlier, if the members don’t wanna promote a ship. they ain’t gonna do it. we got one or two vlives from twoho and das it. lmfao. don’t get me wrong. i’m sure jongho get along well with yunho as well as the other members, but promoting any of the other ships in ateez like woosan isn’t gonna work well. ‘cause the rest of the members don’t have the same dynamics. woosan are comfortable with skinship and being intimate with each other and the other members just are not.
another piece of evidence is the members tired reaction whenever woosan is mentioned. lmfao.
this was so dramatic omg. but the members reactions are very telling of woosan’s relationship off screen. if woosan was just fanservice i do not believe the members would react the way they do, maybe share some knowing glances at each other like. ‘pfft, they think woosan’s real’ but their reactions are always big or very indicative of something bigger happening behind the scenes. lol.
i’m not gonna go into too much details, bc the members reactions to woosan are an entirely different post(i got so many posts to make. xD).
Lastly Wooyoung’s Tatto. I know right? He’s very committed to fanservice guys.
Amicus ad Aras is something that woosan made to signify their friendship, and the fact woo got a tattoo on his body of it means a lot. not to mention woo himself taking initiative to find something that represented their relationship.
i feel like i need to reiterate that the meaning of this tattoo was to define his relationship to san specifically so it applies to san specifically. woo has many MANY friends AS WELL as bestfriends yet he got a tattoo that can only be truly applied to san and no one else.
u can continue saying theyy’re just good friends doing fanservice, but it’s obv that woo has many good friends. so the next question u gotta answer is what separates san from the others.
