Hey! You're my go-to blog when it comes to Gale. I love your meta about him, your insight and your knowledge of his character. This being said, I'd like to know your opinion of this line in his romance:
“To know you love me for the man I am, and not the magic I command... None have loved me so purely before.”
Do you think he's talking about romantic love here? Because his mother and Tara clearly love him for the person he is, too. Or are his insecurities and the idea of himself so strong that he can't see this? Thank you in advance, have a great evening!

personally, i do think that he does mean this in a romantic context.
HOWEVER, having said that, i do think there are different insecurities woven into his perception of relationships that venture outside of his worth due to magic, and into his worth as a person who is in need of help and support - yet considering the core of why that is, they are also connected.
what i mean by that is that there are moments in particular that make me believe he feels a burden to people, because he is in need of help and - from his perception - makes others 'work' to help him, he asks a "sacrifice" of people (needing magical artefact so he consume the weave inside to stabilise the netherese orb) that is so great in his eyes that he feels the need to convince them that said sacrifice is worth the "investment".
i realise this is sort of going in two directions, but i don't think i can answer this differently so i hope you'll bear with me for a bit:
i'll try to look at the relationships you mentioned in your ask separately to illustrate what exactly i mean.
1. from what little we do know about morena, nearly every time she is mentioned it's made clear that she truly and unequivocally loves gale, and i do believe gale is aware that she loves him, too - and really, truly just for him.
we have these two convos with tara that highlight how that love (both are from gale's origin playthrough):

Tara the Tressym: Well, if it isn't my favourite fellow himself. Gale: How are things back in Waterdeep? Tara the Tressym: More or less the same - though news of some mad faction calling themselves 'Absolutists' is starting to trickle in. Tara the Tressym: I told your mother not to worry. That if they were anything to worry about, Baldur's Gate would handle things quick-sharp. Keep them from spreading their tendrils north. She still wants to know when she'll see you again, sir. I avoid giving any answers. But she misses you. Gale: I miss her too. Tara the Tressym: I'll tell her. With my Cat Flap of Displacement, I can afford the occasional visit. I'd bring you along, if I could. Perhaps some day. - Gale: I can't risk putting her in danger. Tara the Tressym: I know that, but she doesn't. She'd keel over if she knew just how you'd tried to manipulate the Weave. Or maybe she'd just say something like, 'My Gale always was one to make the impossible possible.' Oh, but she adores you.

Gale: Will you love me when I'm a mind flayer? Tara the Tressym: Depends. Are mind flayers warm-blooded? If so, my prize napping spot on your lap won't be compromised. In which case, I suppose we could find an accord. And, of course, your mother would still think you a prince, no matter how many tentacles you had. And with a nautiloid, you may even manage to visit her more often.
from the one tiny snippet (that is still bugged) in which gale mentions his mother to the player character, he seems quite assured in that love his mother has for him as well:

Player: So your last name is Dekarios? Gale: It is. Courtesy of my mother, the inimitable, dare I say it sometimes unavoidable, Morena Dekarios. It's been so long since I've used it. 'Gale Dekarios' cut a poor figure next to the wizard prowess of 'Gale of Waterdeep'. [...] - Player: Doesn't your matter mind? Gale: Oh, she's happy if I'm happy. Morena couldn't care one jot what I call myself. Tara's the real stickler for using it. Has done since I summoned her. I'd prefer you not follow her exmaple, if that's all the same to you. 'Gale' is more than sufficient.
she's happy if he's happy.
i think the only thing that detrimental to the relationship with his mother is the orb, the shame he feels over what has happened and fearing he may put her in danger. which, sadly, is a valid concern to have. these fears aren't only echoed in the conversations with tara. we have this bit from the same conversation as well:

Player: You’re right. Just 'Gale’ is better. Gale: I agree. And on the plus side, if I get myself into any truly cataclysmic straits during the remainder of our journey, my family name will go untarnished.
his family name will go untarnished and with that, his mother's name.
this is more speculative, but in another meta i mentioned that i do believe that gale's father left the family at some point, abandoning morena and gale. his father also is not mentioned in the letter from elminster in god!gale's ending:

this could of course be meaningless and his father simply may not have been there at this point in time, but i think this overall goes with the theme of an absent father and it may have brought gale and morena even closer.
2. tara herself doesn't let gale doubt her love him when the game allows her to be there.
she is extremely quick to try and beat any and all self-deprecating remarks gale may make. she is aghast at mystra's demands to the point of saying that she is considering picking up a crossbow to "put the gods" out of "our business." she's always been there for him, and she always will be. she's his longest friend and companion, as well as colleague.
i've picked a another example here to illustrate what i mean:

this very sadly appears to be cut content (tara was supposed to be there for a companion gale as well), but:
Gale: You seem to have fared well enough without me, Tara. You look positively prosperous. Gale: Or should I say, positively proser-puss! Ha! Tara the Tressym: No, you should not say that ever again. Gale: Apologies! Couldn't help myself. Tara the Tressym: True enough. That's why I came looking - to help, if I could. Gale: I have not failed to notice. I truly do not deserve such loyal companionship. Tara the Tressym: Yes, you do.
unfortunately, like i said, tara as gale's familiar and companion was cut from the final version of the game, so while we do know that gale is aware of all that tara has done for him (considering the conversation from the tiefling party, helping him through his isolation, finding out what his condition needs to be treated, getting magical artefacts for him, etc.), we have act iii companion gale saying this:
Gale: Tara remains as wilfull as ever, but I'm glad you've finally made her acquaintance. Given the length of my time away, I feared she might have given up on me. I should have known better - she'd never do such a thing.
while this is not gale thinking tara doesn't love him for who he is, it is very much gale thinking that tara may have given up on him because of their time apart.
there are definitely insecurities lurking there in the vein of "i cost her so much effort and so much work, so maybe now that i've been away for so long, she's finally had enough."
it's very sad to see.
3. when gale talks about previous lovers he has this to say:

Player: Gale, am I the first... mortal being you've been with? Gale: What a question... Gale: No, you are not the first. Though you are the first since my relationship with Mystra came to its ignominous end. Gale: When the true danger posed by my condition became apparent, I had no choice but to sequester myself away from civilised society. A reclusive wizard - who'd have thought? Gale: After so long with Mystra, I have to say the pleasures of mortal love are much sweeter than I remember. Though perhaps that's simply because it's with you.
this tells us that he must have had at least one lover before. yet, and that is where the quote in your ask is from, he also says this:

Player: What does our relationship mean to you? Gale: You must know, our relationship is the brightest spot in our otherwise bleak endeavour. Gale: To know you love me for the man I am, and not the magic I command... None have loved me so purely before. Gale: You are everything to me, and yet our relationship is only a nascent fraction of what it will become. You give me hope, and I've not had that in some time.
i think we can extrapolate from that that not only his relationship with mystra made him feel these insecurities, but that the relationships he had previous may have also fed into this perception of his worth as a romantic partner is tied to his magical abilities.
it's not hard to imagine: waterdeep is very much a city of intrigue. gale was not only a graduate of blackstaff academy, but a powerful archwizard and a chosen of mystra.
4. lastly, i want to talk a bit more about what i said in the beginning and when i talked about tara and companion!gale: that gale feels he is a burden / an investment.
it's already reflected a bit in the way that he believes his relationship with tara has deteriorated in act iii simply because of the distance between them now that he has been away from waterdeep for a prolonged amount of time.
the first time you can get a sense for this aspect of gale is when you agree right away to help him with his condition. there's a prolonged amount of silence and it's clear on his face that he didn't expect you to agree so quickly and without needing to be persuaded.

Gale: Thank you. I see my trust in you was not misplaced! Gale: I'm sure we won't have to look very far to find what I need: Faerûn overflows with magic-infused treasure. Gale: As do our packs, as a matter of fact. We've such an item already in our possession, primed for the moment the need arises. Gale: I know the allure magic artefacts hold. I understand their value and their power. All this to say: I understand the sacrifice I ask of you.

Player: No. If you aren't willing to tell me the truth, I'm not helping you. Gale: I understand that I'm asking for a lot, but I can't tell you everything.
he makes sure to thank the player deeply every time they do give him an artefact, bowing to them, citing their "boundless kindness" and it's also why he is also quick to reassure them that there will be an upside for them, making this "sacrifice" for his sake.
gale's power and knowledge and skills as a wizard.
he is useful and he can make himself useful.
your "investment" in him now will be "worth" the return later.
in conclusion, i hope now it's clearer why i felt like i had to bring these two things together. i believe they are clearly interwoven with each other.

Rewatched the episode to organise my thoughts and I really wanted to share my understanding of the emotional journey Pat is going through this ep. I do feel, like @lurkingshan and @ginnymoonbeam in particular have been saying to me, that Pat's journey is sliiiiiiightly harder to follow, and it hinges on the conversation on two levels that he and Jeng have near the middle of the ep (which, more on that in a moment). Like always, this ep could have used a little nip/tuck, and maybe a montage to show the passage of time, but I'd like to present to you...
PAT'S EPISODE 9 EMOTIONS: A STORY
First movement: absolute cringe, totally embarrassed. He was drunk and weeping, hanging off his boss who had to answer his MOM's phone call and get him home. Said boss is also gay which...we're not processing that right now because it adds an entirely new cringe level.
Second movement: starts to think about the fact that JENG IS GAY AND ONLY JUST TOLD HIM which feels like maybe Jeng has been laughing at him a bit and messing him about. Because he thought they were bonding somewhat all this time but Jeng didn't share this when he knows Pat is also gay. Shoves the stuffie in the drawer because he feels betrayed.
Third movement: Here is where things get wibbly because time is clearly passing between the day after the bar and the day Pat's dad shows up, but we don't really understand how much. Pat is actively avoiding Jeng. Jeng is asking Chot where he is, Pat is taking (multiple?) days off...but no idea of when this falls in the timeline so hard to follow the throughline.
Fourth movement: Pat is back at work and clearly DEEP in his feelings, he has been stewing over this for who knows how long at this point (feels more weeks than days or months). Chot is noticing (and likely misunderstanding the source of the churn as a lovers' tiff rather than a not-lovers' tiff). He thought he wouldn't have to see Jeng because Chot is standing in for him at the screening but Jeng shows up and he kind of panics. So he's feeling embarrassed, a little betrayed and like Jeng has been toying with him.
Fifth movement: This is where they have the convo on two levels. I say that because Pat was clearly saying one thing while Jeng was hearing another. Pat is saying: 'stop doing these things because I can't say no when you're sweet to me.' Jeng is hearing: 'stop doing these things because I can't say no when you are my boss.' The language is deliberately vague, and the idea of two meanings could get lost, but the show makes it clear in the two follow up scenes where Jeng and Pat have separate vents about what's happening. Jeng is crying to Jaab that Pat only sees him as a coworker, while Pat is fuming to Jen that Jeng is playing with his feelings. Pat said 'I don't want to misunderstand' and Jeng said 'you're not misunderstanding' and Pat said 'no I must be misunderstanding because it don't even make sense, so leave me alone please.'
Sixth movement: Pat exposits those feelings of being toyed with to Jen, who is like 'solidarity sister, these brothers be doing that.'
Seventh movement: Chot tells Pat Jeng is quitting and that's when Pat starts to realise that maybe the man was Not Fucking Around, but the WHY ME? is strong because Pat is aware that Jeng is An Adult and he is The Hot Mess Express. Then the man plans him a damn birthday celebration but stays away like he asked.
Eighth movement: At this point, Pat is the SpongeBob crab meme. THERE IS JUST TOO MUCH HAPPENING AND HE CANNOT PROCESS IT HE HAS SOMEHOW GOTTEN LOST IN THE SAUCE. He breaks the fuck down and cries to his mommy and daddy, because it's all too much.
Ninth movement: Pat experiences the miracle of birth up close and fucking personal and like many of us cannot believe that a human can actually do that and what the fuck is he actually caught up about. His good sis MADE A PERSON IN THE STREET and then posted it on Instagram like it was light work, and he is skressed because a gay man likes him, another gay man.
Tenth movement: And then Pat gets home and said gay man has sent him a BOX of snacks just because he said he liked them once, and then sends him a text that basically says 'I LIKE YOU DUMMY, SO MUCH, BECAUSE YOU'RE YOU.'
Look, all I'm saying is my man Pat went on a journey ok?

Ongoing Series - Thai
La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 6 of 10 - It’s so damn cute. Seme is still sus... but cute. I didn’t even mind the pratfall since they clearly both wanted to take advantage of it. These two are great kissers - like MaxTul level. I am PLEASED. Meanwhile, sides have a drunken MOMENT. 
Be My Favorite (Fri YouTube) ep 2 of 10? - I’m enjoying it which is fucking with my head, trash watch here! 
Luminous Solution (Sat Gaga) ep 2 of 6 - Dome has aged so pretty! Do we think the café owner doesn’t want him because he is happy in love? I’m enjoying the high school story arc a lot, and I wish we were just watching that and none of the others (Dome or no Dome). I finally figured it out the actor playing Mai is from Manner of Death.
The Promise (Weds YT & WeTV) ep 10fin - Soap opera brother relationship suddenly? Also more not communicating and more separation? Just bullshit. The best part of the ep was the interstitial cat. It feels like this show dragged on forever I am so glad it’s over and I intend never to think about it again. Full review below (although I pretty much just said it all.) 
Step By Step (Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 7 of 10 - no ep this week, no idea why. It better not be because of the ZeeNew freakszoids or I am banhammering with a will. Our Skyy 2 (Bad Buddy & 1k*) eps 13-14 - skipped it this week as it concludes next week so I’ll binge all 4 at once.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Our Dining Table AKA Bokura no Shokutaku (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 9 of 10 - It’s just so good. I say it every week but it IS. Oh the running of the gays trope! Japan1 For us? How thoughtful. Awe, Yutaka’s confession in tiny was the best. SMILEY KISS! It took 3 BLs but Inukai Atsuhiro has finally actually kissed a boy. 
Star Struck (Korea iQIYI & Gaga) ep 5-6 of 8 - Oof this is such a hard show. Too much angst. It is a complicated story worth further analysis, but it’s too much for me and I don’t wanna dwell in it. Also, sweetie, you don’t get to cockblock the boy you rejected then invite him to sleep over, I don’t care how confused you are. Good for Hanjoon for standing up for himself, but holy shizz is this hard to watch. 
Vian the series (Vietnam YouTube ) - Cats are not caretakers. The neighbor is a cutie. Fun convo for a VBL - top/bottom & everything. Faen fatale showed up + a pratfall kiss and frankly I’m finding this show a bit dull now that the charm of the initial premise has worn off.
Naked Dinner AKA Zenra Meshi (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 8 of 12 - I never know what to say about this one. This was the dark separation doom episode. I was pretty blah over it. I’m just not engaged with this show.

It’s Airing But ...
House of Stars (Thai Mon iQIYI) 12 eps - I bounced at ep 3. Will binge if told it is worth it at end.
Stay (Pinoy ????) 7 eps - It’s mostly in English and set in LA so I’m not bothering to hunt.
Let’s Eat Together AKA Aki wa Haru to Gohan wo Tabetai (Japan movie) cinema release means no inter distribution. Looks cozy: daily lives of college students and roommates who enjoy meals together, and a v codependent, adaptation of yaoi Let’s Eat Together Aki and Haru. I’ll keep an eye open for it but assume we can’t get it for now.
Takumi-kun Series 6: Nagai Nagai Monogatari no Hajimari no Asa (Japan Sun ????) ep 1 of 10 - NO ONE ASKED FOR THIS and no, I have no idea where to get it, why would I? (Say it with me everyone: Oh Japan, must you?*)

The Day I Loved You (Pinoy YouTube) ended. I have been reliably informed it’s better left a DNF.
My Story (Pinoy YouTube) ended. I bounced at ep 4. Someone tell me if I should bother with the rest?
Pure Vanilla (Singapore) - 10 min short on Gaga featuring a cafe, boss/employee, friends to lovers. It’s very sweet. Bit awkward acting. I love seeing real tats on my screen. I wish Singapore would give us a full proper BL. 7/10 RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS 
The Promise (Thai YouTube) - Although well acted this show dragged a too simple premise out into the ultimate manipulative miscommunication repeats of idiotic "why don’t you just TALK!?” Phu & Nan are childhood bffs through college (almost lovers) until Phu disappears. After looking/waiting for him, Nan gives up and self isolates, and the actual story takes place 10 years later. Phu’s “reason” and inability to say it out loud makes the whole show just frustrating, squandering good chemistry, and a stellar cast of multiple faen fatals (whose personalities would’ve made them better boyfriends). Seriously do not bother. What a damn waste of talent, time, and electronic bandwidth. Fatally flawed. 4/10 NOT RECOMMENDED 
Okay it ended a while ago but I finished it:
Make A Wish (Thai grey) - 6 part PNR (from Sammon - Manner of Death & Triage) about a doctor who can see the dead and strikes a bargain with a wish-granting irreverent tree angel - naturally they fall in love. Stars Fluke Natouch opposite not Ohm, but who cares bc Fluke has chemistry with everybody. Once again the Thai afterlife is incredibly bureaucratic but I enjoyed the premise and the unfolding of the story (it’s not predictable but still satisfying and with nice little twist). I like that the doctor is just gay af and has a fag hag bestie and everything. The cast is excellent but the comedic stylings are too overblown and tonally off. It had sad parts and did make me cry but is ultimately happy with a great sex scene, good smiley kisses, and all the agency. 8/10 RECOMMENDED

6/7 Love Tractor (Korea iQIYI) 8 eps - announced in 2022 from WATCHA (Semantic Error) I've been WAITING for this one. About a stressed-out law student who family obligations force into the countryside where a series of strange encounters and misunderstandings with his hunky young farmer neighbour. Will this be an extended version of Strongberry’s Some More? Or Korea’s take on Restart After Come Back Home? I'm chuffed. Country boy meets city boy is a very underused romance trope in BL.
6/9 Boys Love Omegaverse AKA The Boys Love sequel no one asked for (Japan movie) - everyone jockeyed to release the first ABO but it looks like Japan will take it. They do like to do all things BL FIRST. This seems to just be borrowing the branding of Boys Love, showing little resemblance to either original, since it's about 4 men in an idol group. (But could go very dark with that title. Boys Love is technically the first and one of the darkest BLs ever made.) Movie+Japan = no inter distribution.

6/22 About Us but Not About Us (Pinoy movie from 2022 on Prime) - A professor grieving the loss of his partner meets an ambitious literature student.
6/24 Why You (Khmer BL ????) - Billed as a horror romance, not sure if this is a movie or a series where it will air... nothing except that it exists.
6/24 Tie The Knot AKA Under the Same Sky (Pinoy movie on Prime) Trailer - I guess Prime is coming for our Pinoy BL? From OXIN Films (Rainbow Prince), announced for 2022 based on a true story, Briggs's family runs a bridal business but he has never had a chance to fall in love until he meets Shao, a groom to be.
6/25 Dinosaur Love (Thai iQIYI) Trailer 5 eps - from Ultimate Troop about a uni student, Rak, whose partner cheats on him with Rak's best friend. This gives bad boy hazer Dino an opportunity to hit on Rak at last. From The Yearbook people so I will not watch this as it airs. After Remember Me? Never again with them.

why jay/leia is the intended endgame: an unnecessarily long post
the very obvious answer to this is the whole legacy argument. who didn't know when the character descriptions dropped that those two would be a couple just for the whole "haha the kelsos are still driving the forman women crazy" joke? (which they haven't even made yet, which also makes me think we have in no way seen the last of them. we are DEFINITELY getting an eric freakout) kelso was a joke character nearly his entire stint on t70s. they never portrayed him as a good bf or caring ab . . . well anything other than sex, and then eventually betsy (trans!jay kelso theory?). jay, however, they make a big point of showing/saying that he is not like his dad. there is an entire episode dedicated to red realizing that jay is a good boy and that is not kelso just bc he is a kelso.

this is the jay defining moment for me. i think if they had cast a lesser actor than mace this could've come off as 'haha jay trying to get into leia's pants' but mace delivered it so genuinely and sincerely that it is very clear to me that leia is not going to be someone that jay gets over easily. he's this "reformed playboy," yet we never see him be anything less than a gentleman to leia. i am pointing out this line in particular bc of it's OBVIOUS parallel to eric saying that he needed to go to africa so that he can deserve donna.
i have trauma from the gmw fandom debating to death who the corpanga was supposed to be (as if that was a good thing lmfao) but there is literally no debate that jay/leia is the new donna/eric. jay is the cool hot love interest who centers the neurotic dorky protagonist. plus, i mean, the car scene within the first three episodes? be so serious here.
the show spent sooooo much time on jay and it would be so weird to me if they suddenly were just like "actually nate is the male lead now!" i think he probably got the least amount of screentime of any of the kids.
i know the showrunner came out and said leia needed to find a ~deep connection not built on lust~ and that's where nate came in. i do agree with that to an extent, but nate/leia is clearly just to throw off the viewers. also, nate is the kelso archetype more than jay is, lbr. (i could do an entirely separate blog post on that). yes, nate and leia connected. they were able to confide in each other about their relationship issues. does that mean there's romantic chemistry there? no. it just means that they were there for each other in an important moment.
is a big proponent of leia/jay's relationship built on lust? i would argue moreso on leia's side than jay's, but also, leia didn't like jay bc of his looks. she liked him because he made her feel special and treated her with respect. she liked the kind, sensitive part of him. it was only once they had that moment where she began to ~lust after him. and for anyone to argue that jay's feelings for leia are lust related is fucking stupid because

like jay could get any girl he wants canonically. he likes leia for leia. he likes her for all of her little quirks and flaws. plus there is ANOTHER episode dedicated to her feeling she needs to put out and him saying he only wants what she is comfortable with. c'mon man.
this is not some lust related fling that was built on nothing but mutual attraction. i'm not gonna act like their convos ever get super deep or anything (mainly because we only got ten episodes in season one), but nate/leia rly didn't either. like. they were both just upset about jay and nikki. and then they almost kissed.
are nate and leia probably going to be a focus in season two? oh, for sure. but the obvious endgame is jay and leia.
like be so for real.

So chapter 59 is out on mangadex which means I’m no longer relying on machine translation and can point this out without worrying that I have the context entirely wrong. Now... Shirahama’s great with panelling, composition, body language... well everything really but she uses them with a lot of purpose.
I invite you to go through Olruggio and Qifrey’s part of chapter 59 and check

actually, lemme just gush about the switches in composition - the chapter starts tensely, with qifrey and olruggio set apart by lighting, panel breaks, angle. qifrey’s got his “uh oh” side to the camera. and then olruggio shatters the mood by getting flustered and passionate about what he thinks is going on and whilst qifrey is baffled, it brings them into the same space for a bit.

the two panels on the left there are a single image, split by a panel break. it’s got dual purposes - it’s a good pacing tool for the length of Olruggio’s speech and makes the page look nice (I love how she keeps the bubbles flowing in her work - it’s very clear here, right and down!). it also... separates qifrey from olruggio right at an incredibly pointed shift in their conversation.
whilst olruggio is clearly speaking from some sort of experience re: getting teased for having matching accessories ruining some kind of budding romance (tassel swap? please) they are still very much talking about coco and tartar up until right here. if it wasn’t for the masterful composition it wouldn’t be as obvious that, once again, they’ve shifted into talking about themselves through the veil of talking about their charges (see: chapter 18 and the scalewolf convo). once again, olruggio is trying to subtly extend a hand - implying he’s realised something is up that qifrey isn’t telling him... and qifrey very firmly doesn’t take it.

edit: wait also - qifrey’s rebuffing doesn’t have much to go off in the facial expression department where as oru is all expression because once again olruggio is an open book and qifrey glued all the pages together on purpose.

Finishing up the S4 rewatch (finally)! And just have a few more thoughts re: the Jancy/Stancy v Mlvn/Byler convo:
Another one of the clear signs it’s going differently with each Wheeler and their relationship is clear right here, in these moments that occur back to back.
With Jonathan and Nancy, even though there are secrets / things not being disclosed, there is still a clear thread of willingness to engage, be honest, and admit that there are problems/difficulties that need to be addressed, even though we haven’t gotten to them yet.
Jonathan still feels safe enough to ask Nancy if they’re okay (a question you avoid if you’re worried you won’t like the answer—much like El and Mike came to the airport and they were both trying to act “normal”)—

—and Nancy still loves Jonathan enough (in spite of what happened with Steve while he was away) to be honest and say it’s hard, as well as admit to what’s been on her mind most re: college. It’s not perfect—but there is still obvious love and a desire for connection.

Comparing that to Mlvn though…there’s a clear contrast and dissonance between Mike and El, (down to even the dark lighting—and el being “in the light” when she’s by herself, which mirrors Will being “in the light” when Mike touches his shoulder)—
—on top of us seeing them refuse to communicate & stonewall each other, to the point where the only way we get any dialogue regarding the state of their relationship is through a third party (Will, in this case).

Mike and El do not have the love and connection (even in the wake of that dramatic confession) that Jonathan and Nancy do—to the point where (like every other minute this season) Will has to triangulate any communication of emotions between them…in a way that it would be insane to imagine with Steve between Jancy.
There isn’t even a scene after the “two days later” where Mike and El say a single meaningful word to each other—whereas Jancy, who spent the whole season conflicted about their relationship, still clearly want to be together in spite of that confusion and distance.
Basically: Mlvn’s relationship is already in the grave, where Jancy’s just needs some honesty, apologies and gentle tlc—which is why Jancy still stand together in the end shot, while El is separated and Mike’s actual emotional support/communication partner (and best friend) stands beside him instead.

i am going to fucking SCREAM!!!! the guy i’ve been talking to for the last month and went on a date with and was planning to go on more dates with HAS A GIRLFRIEND
he told me he was single when i asked on our date but apparently like 5 days later he got a girlfriend AND FOR TWO WEEKS DIDNT TELL ME HE GOT INTO A RELATIONSHIP
we were talking daily on instagram and text and planning other dates and now my trust has been shattered because i still didn’t even find out from HIM i fucking found out from work BECAUSE HIS GIRLFRIEND IS ALSO SOMEONE WHO WORKS WHERE WE DO
Plot twist tho: the girlfriend and i talked last night because everything came out like all at once (THAT story is insane but this post is already long enough so i might post about that later/separately bc holy fuck last night was crazy) and absolutely had both our minds blown when i told her he invited me to an event this friday that she said he invited her too (and i’m like bro how was that gonna work? turns out it’s bc he LIED to me about it getting rescheduled so he would’ve gone with her and i would’ve been thinking the whole thing was rescheduled lolol). me and the gf exchanged numbers and then she hugged me and then we texted and she’s like it was nice meeting you and you’re sweet and i hope we have more convos that aren’t about douchebags and it made me feel so much better because she clearly saw the truth of the situation that we both got played the fuck out of
so i got a friend out of it and i’m 99% sure she either already broke up with him or will soon bc i also got a text from him saying hey call me when you can (LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO) and then he called me TWICE after 2 am (when my shift ended) and i’m like the audacity this man has and had to not only lie to me about getting a girlfriend (because that was a lie by omission since he had SINCE THE SECOND OF THIS MONTH TO TELL ME HE BECAME EXCLUSIVE WITH SOMEONE) but he also has the audacity to tell me to call him???
i didn’t answer or reply and now i’m just sitting here absolutely wrecked.
you guys i thought in less than a week i’d be dating this guy, he and i just got pizza together like 4 days ago and he said “i’ll be the one making the money in this relationship” since his position at our company makes a ton more than me but he fucking said that while IN A RELATIONSHIP.

oh that's SO TOUGH. I feel like i'd get murdered in any of those situations.
i know it was HC leaning but it ended up becoming a good opportunity for character analysis so ahah
We know very well how Lucio and Lucilius would behave with one another, at least, so that does help us out on this one.
The hostility would be off the charts, mostly from Lucilius' end, but Lucio would be willing to make it work. Both of them would discuss philosophy, although Lucilius always keep wanting to drop the convo and stab Lucio instead.
So it's tense because of Lucilius, but..... i feel like Lucio does want to make it work? He does want things to be better for his clone, he wishes things were different, and he wants to try to bring the conversation somewhere safe. and as long as you trick Lucilius to talk about philosophy you might get a slight break for a while.
I think the keys there is that in term of Lucio and Lucilius: Their personalities could have been compatible if not for the resentment Lucilius had built against Lucio. Regardless we can take into account the fact Lucio has been trying to fix it. But Lucilius is too destructive for it to work. And in term of their final goal, at the time they met, their goals were incompatible, but clearly Lucio is learning from Lucilius now.
Meanwhile we have Bubs and Shalem on the side and i don't think Shalem is..... as cool about it as Lucio.
we don't really know how Bubs feel about being a clone, and about Shalem in particular, and personally i have the HC that since Shalem was in slumber (compared to Lucio who always was active), Bubs didn't get plagued with visions of another life the way Lucilius did. So, with my HC, it means Bubs doesn't have reason to resent Shalem as much as Lucilius resents Lucio - but he doesn't have a lot of reasons to care about her either since he doesn't know about her.
Personality-wise, they're not really compatible. Bubs is a conqueror first, his wits are where he can strategize to win, but he's not particularly one to discuss more "intellectual" stuff. Now this is my wild take on Shalem but i think it's the opposite with her, considering how much of her stories are about her getting worked up by the way people have forgotten history, and how much the world changed.
I think Shalem isn't very good at conversation because she gets so lost in her own train of thought and in all the knowledge she has, she doesn't impart others with the tools they need to understand what she is talking about. She talks fast, she jumps from one topic to the next, no matter if you followed what she meant or not. But ultimately, there is something about her caring about knowledge, and caring about this knowledge not disappearing in some way - ideally, she'd like to share it if she wasn't so scattered about the way the world has changed (and of course, the amnesia and the curse worsening it all.)
And i think this would work terribly with Beelzebub. He likes to get straight to the point, and he doesn't really bother himself with the details of how things are, so i can't see him and Shalem have a conversation without Bubs eventually getting annoyed.
And it's not to mention of course the others glaring issues like the fact Shalem has no filter, especially in regard of her view of sexuality, and that we know it'd piss Beelzebub off especially as he's recovering from thousands of years with Belial. He'd snap in one second, and she'd actually find it so funny she'd tease him about it until he breaks.
Goal-wise, both of them dislike God, but they don't approach it the same way at all. Bubs is all about taking command for himself, where Shalem has joined rebel groups against God in the past, painting her more as a team player than someone who wants to be on top of everything. So honestly i kinda feel like Shalem would point at Beelzebub and call him a loser.
So here's the keys: I think their personalities are totally incompatible. But at least there are no resentment between the two of them. I think at the very least Bubs could admire Shalem for being such a powerful being, but he'd try to show he's above her anyway. And i don't think Shalem would care. I think neither Bubs nor Shalem would have any intensive to make this relationship work at all. And while they understand each other on the "fuck God" department, they're incompatible on the general end of it all.
SO NOW BACK TO THE TOPIC OF THE ASK with all of that being laid in front of us:
Lucio & Lucilius hanging out would likely be Lucio desperately trying to make this relationship work with Lucilius, probably discussing philosophy, while Lucilius is constantly trying to stab him.
Shalem & Beelzebub hanging out would likely be the two of them giving each other the cold shoulder while regularly getting on each other's nerves the moment they open their mouth, with Shalem taking pleasure with bullying/teasing Bubs. Less respectful, but less chances of murders. However it would be fully petty drama instead of actual discussions.
On principle? I'd love to hang out with Lucio and Lucilius because i think their conversations are interesting, and i do live for this sort of drama of "person is trying so hard to make this relationship work but the other one doesn't make a single effort".
But i think Shalem and Bubs have the set up to be the most dramatic type of duo that is rather unpredictable. I don't think there would be like, anything constructive coming out of it -- but let's be real the destructive would be just as funny.

I think i want to see Shalem and Bubs though because i want to see them interreact with one another.
but if they're asking me to get involved i'm bailing, for both pair. this is not worth it.

okay i'll try to explain this in as much detail and as clearly as possible, here we go.
''Who took this sc/ photo?''- Jared showed his phone screen at a convention when a fan asked him what his favorite emoji was. He had recently texted that emoji to Jensen(you can see it in the sc!) so he opened up the chat to show it to the fans. Con vid link -> (x) - starts at around 4:44. The phone screen was enlarged on the big screen behind Jared, fans took a sc from there in the video. Here's as clear a sc as i've seen -> (x) (and it's in my header too!)
''Who wrote what?''- Jack is Jensen and he wrote ''Omg...! Red Advil so bad. I need.'' Timing when he sent it is unknown but it was somewhere around that night probably like 10 or 11 pm. Then at 4:29 AM Jensen wrote ''you know we have a convention today?'' Jared didn't reply. And at 9:46 AM Jared sent that emoji to Jensen.
''Why does it say Jack?''- Jack is one of Jared's many nicknames for Jensen. He saved Jensen's contact in his phone as Jack.
''And I don't understand why it is considered proof?''- In the convention when Jared showed his chat, he rambled about it a bit and said that Jensen sent him that ''convention'' message because his alarm went off late and Jensen banged on his door to wake him up. THIS proves that J2 had two rooms. BUT the convention took place at around 9 AM. And the message was sent at 4:29 AM. Which means that Jensen sent it early morning. Now what did Jensen mean by the message? Jared says in his panel that he was out late night. He's also tired in the panel and makes no effort in hiding it. So Jensen texted Jared ''you know we have a convention today?'' as a like ''dude why are you still out we have a convention you need sleep'' kind of thing. The big question here is: How did Jensen know that Jared wasn't back yet??? They were in separate rooms(two rooms right?), there had been no other convo except the Advil one and then the 'convention' message. How did Jensen know? You can try whatever explanation fits here- a very popular one is the 'one room, two beds'. But Jared said there were two rooms. Another is 'Jared came back, was drunk, made a lot of noise, Jensen heard him, sent a message'. But we all know that if Jensen heard Jared making noise out in the hallway he'd go check on him, instead of sending a text message that Jared might not even see if he was tired and drunk.
and well that leaves only explanation doesn't it? Jared and Jensen were in the same room(same bed djjdjksjkf), Jensen woke up in the middle of the night, turned around, didn't see Jared, texted him :))) and well you connect the dots from here <3

Then, I read that, Sana Maqbul (Lavanya) wanted to quit IPKKND, that's why the quick breakup???
Is that why they didn't give us the COMMON AF *jealousy and hero's ex GF turns villain* track? Then again, Anjali was jealous and sad about Khushi after the first reveal of Shyam, and it looked like track about Didi Ki Saut was beginning. But again ratings dropped and the fandom didn't react well (kinda protested), Anjali quickly stopped showing jealousy and Dadi was introduced to give ArShi a common saas-bahu vibe.

I am going to over answer this with a lot of detail because I have a lot of thoughts, as always! Time to get into my thinking cape/coat:

This analysis is going to cover:
(1) every example you just mentioned,
(2) my thoughts on external things affecting plot of the story,
(3) things/plots/ tracks that could've been if not for external factors
Examples
1) IPKKND was supposed to have a longer office track (that wasn't common though, I would've loved it) but the TRP was low, so Shantivan track was introduced
As far as I can remember from one of the writers' interviews, the office track was cut short because this was a show on Star Plus - which, as a channel, caters to 'family audience' therefore needs to have sanskaar and stuff at its core. Hence the rude shortening of the office track and weird 'makeover' and 'desi-dying' Lavanya. And hence we had a very weird four months of an eighteen-twenty years old Khushi teaching someone about sanskaars and suddenly knowing everything about a household when Bua-ji or even Payal would've been a more apt choice for this 'tutoring'.
If this was a Star One show, they might've not shifted out of the office for the longest time!
2) Sana Maqbul (Lavanya) wanted to quit IPKKND, that's why the quick breakup??? Is that why they didn't give us the COMMON AF *jealousy and hero's ex GF turns villain* track?
I did not know that's why the quick end happened. Honestly that happened perfectly. I think Lavanya had an inkling about their relationship heading south right when Arnav told everyone he's getting engaged to her. But she chooses to not see it until one day she couldn't. Maybe we could've gotten more from La but if you see carefully, La clearly knows that this relationship is now just for face. Bless her heart for trying though, trying with a smile!
Also, again I think the writers never thought of making Lavanya a vamp. They had enough material with Arnav-Khushi's own differences, Shyam and Buaji playing enough roles to mess up Arnav-Khushi's love story. I probably think they always had planned Lavanya as a beautiful person who was unintentionally caught in all of this. I feel they planned La and Khushi's friendship - they clearly enjoyed writing two completely different people becoming closest of friends.
The writers/creators deserve full credit for this.
3) Then again, Anjali was jealous and sad about Khushi after the first reveal of Shyam, and it looked like track about Didi Ki Saut was beginning. This is all true.
My Thoughts on External Things Affecting Plot
It's not necessarily bad that external things affect plot. Feedback, from channel or fans, can help the show to pivot and understand what is working and what's not. The problem is when feedback is implemented regardless whether or not it matches the theme of the plot.
I loved:
1) The channel moving out of the office because the power dynamic was too great and the contract terms were very unhealthy and Arnav Singh Raizada deserved to get sued at least 10 times by the end of this contract so yes, the shorter the office track the better. Literally the saving grace is they didn't "fall in love" there.
2) The fans protesting against Didi Ki Saut track. Not because I hated the track - I think it was executed in the worst manner! From identical visual languages to show Arnav-Anjali and Arnav-Khushi scenes (which didn't work to show Arnav being equally torn between the two most important women in his life, but just made the audience get creeped by Arnav-Anjali's relationship) and writing scenes of Anjali getting offended by Arnav-Khushi's intimacy/Arnav spending time with his wife, on her birthday, in his bedroom... did she expect Khushi would just *disappear* in a her and Arnav's bedroom? Like that was the worst way to show a compelling plot line and giving people some weird thoughts about Anjali-Arnav (which I hate because I LOVE Anjali-Arnav).
3) Barun walking out when the plot was literally done. Yes, thank you!
4) Barun going to do a movie led to the kidnapping track, which I liked a lot. No, not the nonsense of Manorama Bond fishing out Delhi's security camera footages in vintage recording system - but the fact that given the chasm and angst between Arnav & Khushi, only something bigger than their misunderstanding could force Arnav to give weight to his feelings and for Khushi to be able to forgive him. And his life was at stake. It was a sharp reminder to both of them that they lost so much by not communicating that it doesn't matter what they had to say - they loved each other, they just needed to get back and fight off everything together.
And then again, there are things I HATED that happened because of external factors:
1) The channel for the whole La becomes Desi. And the overdose of sanskaar and tradition that followed for a few months *uggggh* Clearly the channel demanded this from the plot because family, traditions and all are important to Star Plus (wtf are they thinking for Ghum Hai Kisi Ke? though or YRKKH?) And even the Aarav track and Mrs. India - two tracks with terrible execution - were very Star Plus recommended content. Just now Saath Nibhana Saathiya 2 had a Mrs. Surat/Gujarat track and Yeh Hai Chaahatein had a miracle child popping up...
2) The fans demanding Arnav & Khushi's proximity. The whole hut scene was *noooooo*. Lack of consent, body doubles, GLARING logical loopholes and them just trying to do it when one of them is really not in the mood and they were both so out of character. @phati-sari explains this really well in her post (just search for the hut to get all relevant posts on her blog)
3) Barun? Not exactly - he's never in control of the plot so really it's the writers that kinda know what to do with his presence and absence. Even if they get a short time, it's upto the creators who know if they use the last 2-3 weeks for stretching a random track as much as they can and give a rushed ending or quickly wrap up a crap track and give a satisfactory ending. A good example of this is Lavanya's exit - although rushed was dealt with grace, important conversations and memorable hugs. Bad one is the end of the show - I know Barun gave his papers but I wish they went the La way with the end of the show - important convos, teary hugs and a sweet moment (they tried their best tho...)
It's an ITV trend though to not plan for the end of a show... they stretch a crappy track as much as they can and have like a 2 min epilogue. Kasautii 2.0 was the funniest cause they had all misconceptions cleared, Komolika and Mr. Bajaj die and then have a weird 2 min pillow fight to show 'happy family'... guess in that way I'm glad we had whatever we did with IPKKND!
Possible Tracks Then
So if external factors didn't influence the show, we might have had the following:
1) A longer office track. It would end the way it did in canon though. I think it was prewritten that at one point Khushi would tear up the contract and hold him accountable for everything Arnav did. Just instead of 3-4 days it would've been 10-15 days after the contract.
2) Didi Ki Saut track. Honestly that was compelling if executed right. Sometimes you can have an antagonist without becoming a villain, Anjali the perfect character for that.
3) A separation track. I'm pretty sure Arnav-Khushi could have separated at some point in their six months marriage - this is just my inkling and not something I heard in an interview unlike the above two. If given full reign to writing, we probably would've gotten an angst heavy stuff at some point post marriage/6 months.
4) A remarriage track sans Dadi. We know why Dadi was introduced (honestly I didn't mind her, it was a track done well and kinda to redeem Arnav in front of the public eyes. It's a perfect track cause Arnav is 'nice' for standing up for her and kinda heals the wounds he caused in the first few months of the marriage by retorting someone who tells Khushi everything he told her...) But anyway I do think a remarriage was in the works, not because of TRPs but the way their whole 'marriage' was framed and how Khushi was broken because of the lack of everything in it. And they deserved one w/o the devastation that night brought.
5) The 'marriage' would've been a live in. Arnav and Khushi's elopement was supposed to be darker in nature*. Their 'marriage' would've had no religious nor legal validity, therefore a stark contradiction to everything Khushi stood for... but you can't have that in ITV. *By dark I don't mean sexual violence - never.*
6) The whole IPKKND was meant to be darker. I am glad for the romantic comedy though! I think their balance of angst and comedy pre marriage was perfect! Not sure post marriage because it felt like a loop of going back to square one with no progress. But I think things were meant to be less subtle, more tragic and dramatized. So I think we could've gotten extremely angsty periods post marriage with a slow, gentle lull to the romance/comedy. While I am extremely glad for the lightheartedness, I wish I could've read what the whole original concept for Arnav/Khushi was!
7) Arnav revealing the truth to Khushi would've been different. We know the distasteful suicide track quickly came as a way to push Arnav's buttons and have him confess the truth of his elopement to Khushi. And that came from Barun going away - hence the quick kidnapping track and everything. So if Barun didn't go away, I honestly don't know how the revelation would happen. Would Arnav start piecing things together from information and things about Shyam in Laxminagar? Would Arnav end up helping and hospitalizing Shashi who would tell him the truth? Would Arnav come across any hidden wedding card Buaji could've had printed for Shyam-Khushi or even Shyam's fake kundili? Given the Gupta house wasn't the place where Shyam covered his tracks... was this where Arnav would start seeing things? Or guilt ridden, would Garima/Khushi/Madhumati tell Arnav the truth? Something was meant to happen for this revelation, whether it's Arnav believing Khushi or just getting further evidence against her - I... don't know! I wish I knew what the writers had in store.
We highly appreciate for not showing a typical Nanand against Bhaabi trope, also for not making La villain, but would it result differently if things didn't have a hand? Imma cry thinking Anjali jealous and La villain! meh!  What a feast for the eyes it was to see ONLY ONE VILLAIN and less negativity in a tellywood show. Baas bohut hua my casual verbiage. By demand I mean no pressure, please take your valuable time and reply whenever you feel like it.Take Loads of Care and Chocolates your way <3

After reading this thread that does a good job giving a quick run down on Buck and Eddie’s journey up until this point like where they’ve been separately and where they are now, I got to thinking about some things especially where Ana and Taylor are concerned.
I was so frustrated earlier in the season when I felt like the show kept shoving Ana and Taylor in our faces and I kept thinking that this was the shows way of saying Buddie was doa and they were moving on but I don’t think that’s the case at all anymore. While it might have seemed on the surface that Eddie and Buck were off doing their own separate things when you look at season 4 as a whole everything with the guys as been connected especially the stuff with Ana and Taylor. They weren’t brought back so Eddie and Buck could have separate love interests they were brought back around the same time as part of Buddie’s journey toward getting together.

Ana and Eddie’s relationship really starts in 4x06 Jinx which is telling enough as it is. It’s also in this ep that Eddie keeps trying to prove that he doesn’t believe in supernatural forces. Meanwhile it’s Buck who tells him “it’s like the universe is screaming at you and you refuse to listen”.
Both Ana and Taylor are in Breaking Point 4x08
It’s fitting that this episode is called Breaking Point because I think the show runners knew this episode would piss some fans off but I think that was the point in a way. I think a lot of the stuff with Ana and Taylor in this episode and thought out season 4 really was meant to be a red herring.
We’re reintroduced to Taylor and we see her and Buck become friends although it’s clear we’re meant to think this could go somewhere by that kiss at the end. Ana and Eddie go on a date and at the end he brings her to see Christopher, a pretty uncharacteristic move for him given the pandemic and Chris’ health. This is another way I believe the show was trying to trick us into believing that these relationships were going somewhere.
Plus in an episode that was chocked full of Buck and Eddie off with other people we still had Buddie always on the periphery like when Eddie came home to Buck, a pretty symbolic moment. Then you had Buck and Eddie at the stand off. Buck complaining to everyone who would listen about Albert and Veronica (even though he couldn’t care less about Veronica) and Eddie admitting he didn’t know how to tell Christopher he was dating Ana. The show focusing on both of their love lives but interestingly enough not showing them talking to each other about their problems when they’re supposed to be best friends.
There was a really important scene with Buck talking to Taylor where he admitted that he felt ready to meet someone and “start a meaningful relationship” and Taylor tells him “I’ve met the people you work with your life is nothing but meaningful relationships”. Interesting choice of words there. To which Buck says, “doesn’t seem the same”. Taylor then tells him “do you ever think you need to be patient and let the universe come to you” a line that mirrors what was said in Jinx. So both Buck and Eddie were being told in season 4 that they needed to listen to the universe, ostensibly the signs around them.
Now at the time the show sort of frames this as Buck and Taylor maybe flirting like maybe the signs are pointing towards Taylor, but I think it was just another misdirect because when you put everything from this season together it’s clear that there was a deeper meaning there and it was directed towards Buddie.

Ana was in 4x10 Parenthood
This episode was all about parents and it would seem on face value that Ana’s role is about her getting closer to the Diaz family but it’s not. Her role in the episode was to highlight how Buck is Christopher’s other dad. How the only other person Christopher is terrified of losing beside Eddie is Buck. How when Christopher was upset and scared he ran to Buck’s house.
Taylor was in 4x11 First Responders
Again I think the show was trying to mislead the audience into thinking that things could be going somewhere with her and Buck when really they were just developing their friendship. Notice how they didn’t spend any real alone time together getting to know one another like how a show would typically frame a couple in the making. Their only scenes in this ep involved them trying to solve what happened to Sue. Like work partners working on a project. Taylor comes over at the end of the ep with wine but there’s no real intention on her end that she’s interested in Buck and they only talk about the case.

Taylor was also in 4x12 Treasure Hunt
This is where things start to get interesting and I think really where the show starts to turn things from just faking out the audience to giving more clues about Buddie.
We get a scene where a bunch of the 118 are talking about the treasure hunt after seeing Taylor talk about it on the news. They talk about how it’s going to get more people hurt and Eddie says to Buck “your girlfriend’s news story is probably not going to help out with that”. Buck says “she’s my friend not my girlfriend”. To which Eddie nods his head like he believes him but he makes a face looking pouty and jealous.
Now why would the show put that line in there and show Eddie being jealous right before the three of them end up working together? 🤔
Buck calls Taylor and asks to team up to find the treasure and at the end of the call the camera pans out to show Eddie. Almost like they would if Buck was keeping things from his so.
Eddie asks Buck to team up but Buck had already teamed up with Taylor so he brings Eddie in the on deal. We then get the kitchen scene with the three of them where it’s obvious Eddie is jealous and as was pointed out in the twitter thread I included above the framing of that scene was definitely intentional. Eddie looking jealous seated in the middle of Buck and Taylor.
Even though the three of them were supposed to be a team we see Buck and Eddie together through most of the important parts of the episode. Like at the end when they find the treasure chest.
There’s a scene with Buck and Taylor at his apartment where he thinks things are going somewhere between them they’re not and it’s not the first time it’s happened. One has to wonder why he keeps trying to put himself out there for something that just isn’t going to happen.
While eating breakfast with the 118 Buck says "at this point I don’t trust anyone” and the camera specifically focuses in and lingers on Eddie looking hurt. When Buck notices he quickly clarifies what he meant.
The episode ends letting us know that Taylor only thinks of Buck as a friend and that’s how we move into the final two episodes of the season.
Also Just like with Parenthood Ana was in that ep to highlight Buck being Chris’ other dad Taylor was in Treasure Hunt to highlight that Eddie isn’t comfortable seeing Buck with someone else.

Ana was in 4x13 Suspicion
So I’ve wrote about this in another post but I think that Ana’s whole purpose in this episode was solely for Eddie and Carla to have the convo they did. The show made it clear that Eddie has not been emotionally invested in his relationship with Ana.
We saw Ana looking up the stuff about that mother who was poisoning her son but Ana wasn’t really involved in that whole storyline ultimately it was Buck. Buck was there when they first went to that call and he was the one who went to the women’s house with Eddie at the end despite being in civilian clothes. There was also no acknowledgement of Ana before Eddie was shot. Usually before a scene like that you’d have a couple saying something meaningful like I’m so glad you’re in my life or Eddie deciding to tell her he loves her but instead it was all about Eddie and Buck. It was also Buck who right before the shooting said “that kid is just lucky he met you” when Eddie was feeling guilty for not getting to the call sooner.
Then of course the shooting was framed to be all about Buck and Eddie. To the point that it was like almost nothing else existed in the world for a few seconds. Even when they pulled out of the slow motion all the camera really focused on was them.

Now looking ahead to the last episode for season 4 both Taylor and Ana will be in the episode. We can see that Taylor is in the finale just from the promo. It’s not surprising that Ana will be given she’s been dating Eddie and he was just shot.
But I can’t help but wonder why is the show bringing Taylor in to a season finale that is already clearly over flowing with stuff for the characters to do. I mean surely they don’t have screen time to waste? And I don’t mean that as a dig on Taylor. I mean I get the impression this episode is going to be planned to the second with no filler junk. We have the sniper, saving Eddie’s life, Athena and Bobby’s marriage dramas, Maddie’s depression, Buck doing something reckless to save everyone, Buck thinking Eddie is going to die and losing his shit, Buck talking to Christopher, whatever happens in that convo between Buddie.
So again why is Taylor in the finale? We see her with Buck in the promo and it looks like it might be in front of the hospital. It’s possible she’s there to help Buck find the sniper but I think the show could get around that some other way. If you look at how the show has handled Ana and Taylor thus far and how their presence in each ep throughout season 4 was to further Buddie’s story I think there’s only one reason she’s coming back and that’s because Buck is going to confess something to her about Eddie.

If we look at 4x13 again it was an episode that was more about Eddie than Buck and it was about discovery and honesty. People discovering things and being honest with others and themselves. I think 4x14 will be similar but with Buck. We can tell from the promos that Buck is going to have a lot of focus in the finale and I think part of that is going to involve him being honest with himself about some things. This will hearken back to the journey he’s been on for the whole season.
In the season 3 finale we saw Buck closing the chapter on Abby finally. We saw him grow and go through so much all season 4. He’s had to face a lot of truths this year. About his parents and about the kind of relationships he’s been in and what he really wants now but I also think he’s still been running. I think given all the hurt he’s experienced he’s been afraid to be truly vulnerable. He said earlier in season 4 he wanted a more meaningful relationship and it’s been in front of him all along yet he keeps running in the opposite direction.
In Breaking Point Taylor came back to 911 to tell Buck the he needed to listen to the universe and I think when she comes back in the finale whatever she says will be an echo of that convo.
My guess is Buck will come to some kind of realization after the shooting and he’ll talk to Taylor about it. I think that Taylor will be the one who pushes him to talk to Eddie and she’ll even likely say that she knew something was there between the two of them to begin with which is a big reason why she didn’t pursue anything with Buck. She knew he was in love with someone else.

Which leads us to what happens next

I’ve been thinking about this scene a lot and what might happen here. I’ve seen some people say they think Eddie will ask Buck to be Chris’ legal guardian in case something happens to him or that it might be a dream sequence. I think both of those things are possible but I can’t shake this feeling that when I look at Buck’s face here he looks like he’s being being told some surprising bad news.
I think it’s possible that Buck will go to the hospital with the intention of telling Eddie how he feels only when he gets there maybe Eddie tells him Ana is moving in. Maybe Eddie says she’s going to help take care of him and Christopher. Eddie says he wants to make sure that Christopher has someone in case something happens to him.
Which leaves us on a cliffhanger for the end of season 4 and in season 5 we could get Buck trying to navigate his feelings for Eddie while figuring out his sexuality.
I don’t think the actress who plays Ana will end up coming back for season 5 but that doesn’t have to affect how they leave things at the end of season 4. If we look back on previous seasons 911 is notorious for doing cliffhangers like this. Abby left at the end of season 1 and didn’t come back and it was essentially a cliffhanger to her and Buck’s relationship. The season 2 finale didn’t give total clarity about where things with Ali and Buck were going and by the time season 3 came the actress was gone.
So this whole idea of Ana moving in with Eddie could just be an idea and we won’t actually have to see it happen in season 5. Like Eddie says Ana is moving in but by the time season 5 rolls around we hear that she got a job offer in another state and she took it.
But something else could happen too. Maybe Eddie breaks up with Ana given the clarity he got from the convo with Carla and the shooting. Then he asks Buck to move in and help him and Christopher while he’s still healing. Buck decides that now isn’t the right time to tell Eddie how he feels that he needs to just be there for his friend so he holds back. That would still bring us into season 5 with a will they or won’t they which is ultimately where I think things are headed.
I’ve seen some people speculate that Eddie might tell Buck he’s going back to Texas which I think is less likely but still possible. So Eddie breaks up with Ana and decides he’s going to spend time with his family in Texas. Buck goes to tell Eddie how he feels and before he does Eddie tells him he’s leaving. Season 4 ends where we don’t know when or if Eddie and Christopher are coming back. Though ultimately they do in season 5 but how that all plays out would make for some good storylines and it could open up room for another Lonestar crossover ep too. It would be great to have an episode where Buck and TK talk about how Buck feels about Eddie.

I know a lot of people are going to be pissed if anything less than Buddie getting together and living HEA in the season 4 finale happens but I think we need to be patient. If we actually even get one of them acknowledging his feelings for the other it will be a huge step in the right direction towards them becoming a canon ship. But it does feel like the show is taking them more seriously now.
I know that the show could just be queerbaiting us that’s always a possibility at this point but I think it’s okay for us to be hopeful too. I feel like if the show didn’t want to move forward with Buddie they would have put more effort into developing Buck/Taylor and Eddie/Ana and a lot less into Buddie. This would have been the best season for the show to finally cut ties with Buddie if they really wanted to move on and were tired of hearing about it from us fans. Instead they’ve only developed Buck and Eddie more and there’s no getting around all the symbolism in that final scene in the recent episode. It was shot like two lovers.
I think we just need to have some faith that the writers care enough about the characters and audience to not string us along and that this is all leading somewhere. Which for the first time since Eddie arrived I actually think it is I really do think that Buddie will become canon.

i have to talk about the jet ski convo too because @myowngloriouspurpose​​ mentioned it in their insightful tags and this bit is something i’ve thought about a lot from that scene, actually, so, why not 😅 and now okay i swear i’m done. i’m so sorry.
so, the footsie scene in episode 2 just wholly confirms the shift to complete relaxation, intimacy, and trust that was indicated in the previous scene of Loki falling asleep in Mobius’ company, right? but within this scene, it’s the first part, the jet ski convo, that immediately signals this and sets a new tone. this is the part where Loki asks about Mobius’ obsession, he explains it, and Loki reacts.
it is just so amazing to me that Loki is curious about the jet skis enough to break the tired silence between them to talk about it...and for no ulterior motive.
oh sure, the convo morphs into a friendly philosophical debate about the veracity of the time keepers’ narrative, but even this is a series of friendly pushes from each to one another. Loki attempts to open Mobius’ mind by connecting to him and separating the two of them from the TVA, and he concedes on multiple points to change angle of debate when it’s clear they are at an impasse. 
there is no negativity or aggressiveness or force involved, no demands of Mobius to accept his perspective (or vice versa), no strong annoyance within the blips of frustration each express at being interrupted by the other, and there isn’t really any sharp wit, either. the jabs are openly and intentionally played by each of them with a light tone, more teasing instead of mocking.
it is really just a friendly debate, each trying to meet the other within their own perspective and then trying to help the other cross into their line of thinking, prompted entirely because they care about the other, care about what the other’s opinions and beliefs are, and care about swaying the other to their truth.
besides, nothing about this first part of the discussion suggests Loki started it with a plan or end in mind. they were still mid-convo when Loki unintentionally helped Mobius crack the case, and where Loki was headed when Mobius had his lightbulb moment was in a more personal direction, seemingly with the only motive being Loki supporting the merits of his perspective with his own experiences -- you’re wrong, though. you see, i know something that children don’t.  what’s that?  that no one bad is ever truly bad. and no one good is ever truly good.  ...scared little boy.  yes, it was quite patronizing. i thought it was a bit too far, actually. 
...and then Loki proceeds to be quiet and wait for Mobius, only confused but not really miffed or frustrated from being cut short from any particular thought when Mobius jumps up.
so while there was no end plan for the discussion, neither was this all that spontaneous. these appear to be questions Loki has lingered on. yet, this is a moment of nothing but warm and genuine curiosity from Loki...and a willingness to accept Mobius’ passion as something worthy, for him. there is no judgment, no mocking, no slighting comments. it is a display of unguarded empathy from Loki to Mobius.
and that is just fascinating. isn’t it? this moment to me is where we see how Mobius’ perseverance (how anyone’s perseverance with Loki could, but specifically Mobius here) pays off in Loki...giving in, for lack of a better phrase, and being willing to form this bond, this (still here unnamed) friendship. it feels like Loki is fully aware that he is pursuing, openly, this connection with Mobius, to understand Mobius beyond the case or any other advantage/disadvantage-motivated position, for the first time.
(to indulge in a little blow-by-blow screencapping again, because i love their expressions...)
both are in thought, staring down at the table, cups half-empty. but Mobius sits still whereas Loki’s fingers tap a few times before he lifts his head and speaks. who knows what Mobius is thinking about, but Loki is clearly thinking about these questions. and this start is a bit...stilted. hesitant yet determined.

this right here. Mobius calls jet skis “awesome,” proclaims it with unbridled passion, reveals a proclivity for this ridiculous midgardian recreational watercraft, and Loki just...accepts it. he completely accepts it.
and again, i’m going to be saying this a lot, but it is not a manipulation -- because Loki does not do anything with this revelation. he breaths out a laugh, smiles, pops his brows up in a sort of accepting shrug, then tips his head back down with his non-mocking response, expression slowly slipping to...an almost sentimentality, or reflection. it looks like, it feels like, Loki is being prompted to think on himself, about what he’s enjoyed with such simple passion like that. at least imo. but again, he does not try to use this information to steer Mobius in any direction. he is not the one to continue the convo at all.
Mobius does that, by going on to explain his jet ski love. and it lifts Loki back into the convo because he is, genuinely, entirely interested.

we the audience get to follow Mobius while he’s sharing his passion, but no wonder he gets more animated and smirking, pleased with himself as he goes on, because when the camera cuts back to Loki, he’s completely in the moment with Mobius, happy to listen. he even nods a few times when Mobius is done.
and, again, Loki’s next prompt is without ulterior motive. he takes a beat to think over Mobius’ words and what comes out is just more friendly curiosity, a want to know more about Mobius.

no. no....i think a TVA agent showing up on the sacred timeline, that would create a branch for sure.
Mobius is quite an open book here, and arguably this display of longing, this explanation for ‘why not’ that is quite readily in his mind and offered without Loki having to ask, this is something that propels Loki later when the discussion turns to debate and he is trying to sway Mobius. because he has this moment of seeing Mobius falter, that Mobius wants something beyond the TVA, that he is fallible. so how far fallible is he in those beliefs?
but for how Mobius cites the jet ski dream in episode 4 to Ravonna when he gives up the ghost of the TVA, Loki doesn’t try to use this want to manipulate, try to twist it, or anything along those lines later as the discussion shifts here. it’s the perfect opportunity. he should, if manipulation at any costs is his goal, but he doesn’t, because that isn’t. the jet skis are entirely untouched. this moment is untouched. because this is real, and the debate is real, and the opening up to care is real.
and when Loki does cite the jet skis dream in episode 4...maybe it was one of the little elements in Loki’s speech that does, fleetingly, and then eventually, work to sell the sincerity. because this, this between them here, was real.

oh, it’d be fun, though.  yeah. yeah, it’d be really fun...  so why read about them?
it’s just...Loki doesn’t push. there’s curiosity, there’s that glimpse of mischief -- it’d be fun, though -- but there’s no pushing. just exploration. just two calm, relaxed people connecting. Loki doesn’t use this info to manipulate, so there is no other explanation beyond...connection. and Loki leads it.

Mobius was sidetracked in his own imagination for a brief second before Loki asked, but his response, while it takes a beat to put into words and is resigned, it’s also sincere. honest.

and here, one final time i really must stress, Loki just accepts. he accepts that this is Mobius’ view, and yes it makes him chuckle a moment in disbelief, but then...he leans forward. the curiosity is too much. the desire to really understand is too strong. not to manipulate, not to concoct a plan to take down the TVA -- because from searching the apocalypse files after this and onward, Loki totally believes that Mobius will fight on his behalf for a meeting with the time keepers -- but, here, he just...wants to understand Mobius.
like he says later, full of disbelief but without malice, every time i start to admire your intelligence, you say something like that. because that’s what this is all about, right? that’s why Loki keeps on this conversation, entirely about how Mobius ticks and why: Loki is trying to reconcile everything he knows about Mobius, to stitch it all together and form a real, complete picture. that’s what he does the entire episode up to and through this convo, i think. that’s what is driving his curiosity, this consideration for Mobius’ motives.
Loki starts this episode off manipulating, but it doesn’t work, repeatedly, yet Mobius doesn’t really punish him or reject him. he even defends him, keeps giving him chances, listens to him, and for what? why? it can’t just be pity, or for the case. those pieces don’t fit quite right. there’s a natural care here, born from a deep well of empathy.
i mentioned it at the top, but imo, this convo and the rest of this scene is a series of genuine displays of and attempts at consideration and empathy from Loki to Mobius. he can’t empathize with everything Mobius says, but he can with far more of it than he would have previously allowed himself to or even attempted to before this whirlwind of circumstances made him contend with Mobius. and Mobius meets him at every step, feeds that curiosity with honesty, answers the mischief with good-natured jabs of his own.
it’s so subtle...but this, especially this scene’s opening and first act exchange, just shows so much of the growth culminating in Loki, and the very real, very close, potential for harmony and stability that this relationship has.

Hello! I'm the anon from the 4 part ask that you answered earlier! I saw your post about the different "eras" of DNF and I would like to share some of my opinions since I've been in the fandom since March of last year, so maybe I can write my own analysis and briefly explain what happened during these times (and hopefully someone will find enjoyment in reading this)!
So the first era was probably the most "baity" period where every interaction between Dream and George with slight romantic undertones was pure bait. From Dream placing romantic music in the background, to the small texts on screen that would read "arguing like a married couple" and even proclaiming his love to George any second he could, it was obvious that it was a means to garner a reaction and moments that could be used in compilations, edits, videos, etc. Dream addressed George just the same as he currently does Sapnap or Bad: Dude, Bro, etc, and when they weren't attempting to bait, for example on streams, things were chill, no tension, just two bros hanging out in minecraft.
LOVE OR HOST ERA. The catalyst in DNF's relationship, in my humble opinion. Now, where do I begin? So, LOH was definitely a time that I believe Dream became aware of his feelings towards George (platonic or romantic, I can't be sure) and his fear of losing him. Before/During George's LOH, we got Dream saying some interesting things, the most notable one "George is the only man I can see myself dating". Now, I'm pretty sure this was meant as bait, but how he reacted prior to LOH, was very telling. Dream would avoid George like the plague in every situation that didn't require them to interact. Twitter? Only one mention (and that was literally him tagging George in Andrea's post in spite). Stream? That I can remember he didn't join much during this time, nor did he stream that often. During MCC, the DT was separated in different teams, Sapnap & George together and Dream alone. Now Sapnap DID pop off. He was doing amazing. And Dream complimented him and his team quite a lot. But what about George? I believe he mentioned him ONCE. This was the first time we see Dream jealous in regards to George, and the lack of content and interactions between these two made many believe DNF was dead and abandon the ship all together.
QUACKITY AND KARL. Now there is a lot that happened in between LOH Arc and the friendship between the DT with Karl and Quackity. Dream and George seemed to have solved whatever occured between them, and things were tranquil. We got a few baity moments here and there, but we also started to get the start of the infamous "name-truthing", the soft voices and other subtle moments. Now, during this time George, Dream and Sapnap started developing their friendship with Quackity and Karl, George in particular started getting closer with them and spending LOTS of time with them, so much so that we got more G/K/Q content than we did DT content. And we get Jealous Dream 2.0., only difference from the other occurence of jealously? He addressed it publicly, admitted that he was frustrated and physically affected by the lack of attention from the british man. He confronted George while he was streaming, with an audience of 50k+ viewers. He was desperate.
Things were pretty calm after that, the more intimate and subtle moments between the two became more and more apparent and began to outweight the baity moments. Quackity/George/Karl continued to blossom their friendship, and DNF was slowly becoming a topic to tease George and Dream (I can only compare their teasing to that of middle schoolers when their friends had a crush). We can compare this teasing to that of Skephalo, the difference, while one is leaning on the more explicit side and used to make others laugh or get an over the top reaction, the other was used as an inside joke of sorts, only brought up to embarass or shut up Dream/George when they got over-confident (most times it would effectively leave them quiet, important to note, is that they never denied the claims nor attempted to).
TRAINS PODCAST. Oh boy, was this a night to remember. A historical mark for DNF. The point in history that George decided to become BOLD and actively flirt with Dream whenever he wanted to, rendering or poor Leo speechless most of the time. That podcast changed these men, it unlocked something within them and things have never been the same since. This is where we see the dynamic take a major switch, and baity moments had become almost non-existent, and instead we got probably some of the most tension filled convos between these himbos. Name-truthing had become something natural between them, the unavoidable excitement whenever they hear one another in call, suddenly ever call became a matter of how long until they were third-wheeling everyone. It's also during this time that we clearly see a difference in between Dream & Sapnap's relationship and Dream & George's relationship (not that one outweighed the other, but the nature of these relationships were very much opposing)
And finally we are in our current stance. Where the sweet, obnoxious moments continue to pile; More and more of their friends are calling them out (you can literally see Quackity and Karl becoming more direct and, quite honestly, aggressive with their call-outs. I bet they are just as tired as we are); The whole hoodie fiasco and the secretive pictures; Syncing sleep schedules once again; Tension continue to grow and you can see them testing the waters, in a game of tug of war until one of them caves in and starts the conversation.
As I said before, they have nothing to gain from the bait they are currently doing. They excuse it as being a joke, and hide behind this lie, as a means to test the development and seriousness of whatever they have going on. The whole Valentine's thing proves that they (unfortunately) do not understand when the other is being sincere or baity...
Also here is some food for thought. George has been very clingy with Dream ever since he and Sapnap moved in together. Not being able to see each other is certainly another factor that is affecting them.
I'm anxious to figure out what in the hell is happening next between our oblivious idiots with communication issues. It sometimes seems surreal the things that occur between them, and straight out of a fanfic.

Chapter 30: A Healer’s Advice

So i know its the middle of the night, but I just finished this and I had to post it! I restructured this section so that the emotional convo with Aelin was at the end of the chapter, because it works so much better for this fic. Also, I know Namonora is completely OC, but I just had to give her some kind of conclusion in the story because it’s the last time we are going to see her, and I thought it made for a nice emotional moment. You’re just gonna have to forgive me (I know I managed to make one paragraph in the book into a whole ass 3000 words. Im sorry. I hope you like it anyways).

For hours that night they stayed up talking, adjusting their plans to accommodate the lack of reinforcements.
There was a somber moment when Rowan calmly encouraged all of the non-fighters still in the fortress to flee. Several demi-Fae exchanged worried glances, but all refused. Even Emrys wouldn’t leave, and Malakai simply said that where his mate went, he went.
Rowan didn’t know whether to be thankful or not that there wasn’t much they could change. The die had been cast, and there was no turning back now. But Rowan kept the demi-Fae captains talking anyways, distracting them from their fear.
It wasn’t until Emrys hauled a pot from beneath the kitchen sink and began banging it with a wooden spoon – demanding that they give it up for the night, that they headed off to bed. Aelin managed to catch a few hours of sleep, but Rowan lay awake, just staring up at the stone ceiling and listening to the slow, even breaths of the female at his side.
The next morning, they led almost every single demi-Fae at Mistward – those who weren’t already out delivering messages, that is – to the healers’ compound, where they helped cart the patients to safety.
They moved them to a camp set into the side of a mountain, an easily defensible cavern with enough space to set up a temporary hospital. It was dark, and a bit damp, but the healers and the wounded would be far safer here than along that exposed section of river.
It took most of the day, even with the dozens of healers and healers’ assistants to help them carry the many stretchers, cots, boxes, and baskets. And there was a seemingly endless line of patients needing assistance traversing the rocky path up to the secluded caves. Many of the wounded used crutches or were bedridden, and many more were too sick to walk unassisted for longer than a few minutes – Fae with weak hearts or lungs, with recently stitched wounds, or half-healed broken bones.
And then there were the supplies. Medical tools, salves, cloth, bandages, and herbs – clothes, books, blankets, and mountains upon mountains of food. All that needed to be carefully transported and stored.
Namonora was a frantic presence in the fringes of Rowan’s vision, flitting in and out of his view throughout the day. One moment, she was assisting a stumbling female over a particularly uneven bit of earth, the next she was organizing piles of books into ‘stay,’ ‘storage,’ and ‘leave,’ piles, according to levels of usefulness. Another, Rowan caught her chastising a rowdy group of young demi-Fae, clearly students, and corralling them into separating piles of patient uniforms into ‘clean’ and ‘dirty,’ and folding them neatly into burlap sacks. In yet another, he found her instructing a harassed-looking assistant on the proper way to pack sets of scalpels “without cutting off the fingers of some unsuspecting healer!”
It wasn’t until evening that Rowan caught a quiet moment with her, when much of the chaos had died down. Even after everything had been moved from the compound and into the cavern, the demi-Fae from Mistward stayed to help the healers organize the camp into a functional structure, and help the wounded settle into their temporary home.
Luca and Emrys had assisted with dinner, whipping up a meal from the dry rations now filling the makeshift pantry, using a convenient rock shelf to prepare the soup that they were now ladling into dozens of bowls. Bas was laughing enthusiastically with a group of injured men from Wendlyn in a secluded corner, exchanging bawdy jokes and generally lightening the dour mood. Aelin was wandering through the rows of cots lighting candles and torches, occasionally giving a soft touch and a smile to those who seemed quiet, or lost.
Namonora was now standing cross-armed near the entrance to the cave, her eyes surveying the company critically. Rowan sidled up beside her, and together they looked over the motley group, stress furrowing both their brows.
After a few long moments, Namonora sighed and turned to face Rowan. “I think you owe me an explanation.”
Rowan frowned. The messages sent to the healers and the other fortresses had been short and to the point, purposefully neglecting to explain much of what they had learned about the dark creatures.
So Rowan told her. He explained how Aelin had discovered their hiding place in the caves, how she realized the connection between the stench and the creature she had faced in the palace in Adarlan. How Rowan had discovered the creatures hidden at the back of the soldier’s camp, and what he learned there. How they had escaped.
Namonora’s eyes darkened as he spoke, her face tightening. When he got to the battle between the creature and the skinwalkers, she paled. “So you are sure it is dead then?”
Rowan sighed. “There was no body.”
“So you cannot be sure.”
“No, we cannot. But I don’t see how it could have survived.”
Namonora looked back over her patients, her healers. All these people she was responsible for. “I was right. Adarlan is breeding monsters in the Dead Islands.” Her voice was cold and hard.
Rowan nodded slowly. “So it seems.”
“Do you know how they can be killed?”
Rowan’s jaw clenched and he shook his head. “I have only guesses.”
Namonora turned sharply to look at him, but she didn’t say anything more. After a heavy pause, she asked, “Are some of your people going to stay here with us? We would be happy to shelter as many as needed.”
“Yes, a few of the non-fighters were going to stay, and we were planning on leaving a small group of guards as well.”
“Good. That is good.” Her voice trailed off.
“Is Paynor still here?”
“No. We discharged him two weeks ago, and he went off to rejoin his naval company. He’s probably fighting at Wendlyn’s northern border as we speak.”
The disdain of a healer filled her voice. A few months ago, Rowan might have thought lesser of her for it. But now…
“Then let us hope their outlook is better than ours.” He was surprised at the layer of sarcasm that darkened his tone.
Her eyes widened. “Is it really that bad?”
The question was earnest. And Rowan knew that he couldn’t avoid it.
“When we could be sure of reinforcements, I knew we had a shot.”
“And now?”
“Now, we will fight as hard as we can. And let the dice fall where they may.”
Silence.
Sorrow leeched into the healer’s lily-mint-and-rain flavored scent, and the two of them turned once again to look over the churning, rippling mass of people before them. Mortals, demi-Fae, and Fae, all working together, helping one another.
Rowan’s eyes automatically sought out a golden head of hair, and found Aelin sitting at the end of a child’s cot. The girl looked pale, and gaunt, but her eyes were bright. A small smile warmed Aelin’s face as they talked quietly with each other.
Aelin raised her hand, and flames began to wrap around her fingers, leafy vines blossoming over her knuckles. The girl started slightly, but Aelin only took her fingers in her own, letting the flaming vines slowly creep over their joined hands to curl around the girl’s wrists as well. They began to sprout into golden blooms, each petal curving and undulating in an invisible breeze.
Rowan could hear the child’s delighted laugh from all the way across the cavern.
“And what will her place be, in the battle to come?”
Rowan realized with a slight shock that Namonora had also been watching Aelin and the girl. Had been watching him watch them. He quickly collected himself. “The princess is an accomplished fighter - she will do whatever is required of her,” Rowan replied simply.
But Namonora seemed unsatisfied. “I can feel the touch of her power from here.”
Rowan nodded vaguely.
“A mighty gift.”
She was prodding, seeking answers he wasn’t sure he wanted to give. Rowan just pursed his lips, jerking his head once.
“Such a gift could only have been bestowed by the gods.” She turned back to face Aelin, face tight. “A demi-Fae princess, with power enough to remake the world.”
Rowan remained silent, his face expressionless.
“A rare thing, that. Priceless.”
Rowan was sure that her eyes must be boring holes into the back of his head by now. Still, he kept his silence.
Her teeth clacked together. “Do you know what our Queen intends to do with this precious gift?”
A pause. “I doubt, Head Healer, that I would tell you, even if I knew.” Rowan’s voice was measured, cautious.
A huff of breath. “A courtly answer, if ever I heard one, your highness.”
Rowan snorted.
“Still – if you both survive, you must take her to Doranelle?”
Rowans silence served as answer in itself.
Namonora sighed. “The thought of those powers, colliding...” she shivered slightly. “I suppose you won’t tell me what the princess intends, either?”
Rowan just sighed.
“I figured.”
“What will be, will be, Head Healer. There’s not much in our power to stop it.”
“I never would have thought you to be so defeatist.” A cold frown. “You must do whatever you can. She must survive.”
Rowan’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t respond.
There was a short pause, but then: “You cannot let that girl die.”
Namonora’s voice had become low and intense. Rowan turned to face her, but didn’t say anything. He was surprised to see that instead of anger or reproach, her face was filled with a deep concern.
Rowan sent the old female a questioning look, but she only answered it with yet more evasiveness. “Did I ever tell you the story of how I became a healer?”
Rowan slowly shook his head.                                                  
“I met Queen Maeve once. As a child. She found me.”
The healer’s voice relaxed, preparing to tell a long and familiar story. By contrast, Rowan found himself tensing, his muscles stiffening with unease.
“I grew up on the streets of Doranelle. I am full Fae, but still, my parents abandoned me. It took years, but eventually I found out that my father had gotten my mother with child, and then abandoned her. My mother had a very hard labor, and she died giving birth to me. A nursemary took care of me through babyhood, but eventually the money ran out, and she abandoned me too.” A wry frown.
“I lived among groups of demi-Fae children, moving between empty homes and abandoned buildings - scrounging for food and stealing coin where we could. With my gift, I learned how to draw water from the earth, and others were drawn to me, and to the small amount of safety I could offer. I had no idea that another life was possible.”
Rowan found himself interested against his will. It was so similar, and yet so different from Lorcan’s upbringing.
“One day, in my late teens or perhaps early twenties, I stole from the wrong person. A lord of some kind, I never learned his name. Guards came after me, and they broke apart the small group I was living with at the time. They killed one of my friends.”
Namonora’s voice broke, and Rowan shifted in discomfort. Unsure just exactly where she was taking this story, why she felt the need to tell it to him.
“Then they hauled me to the palace, jailed me, and sentenced me to six months’ hard labor. In the textile mills in Kerrcian.” A swallow. “I began to plot my escape. They didn’t know I had a gift. I was untrained, so it was small and easily hidden. I sharpened my water into blades, and began to cut at the bars they held me in. But of course, I was discovered within days, and they covered my hands in iron gloves.
“Only now they knew I had a gift of healing, and everything changed. Queen Maeve sent for me. I can still remember the way my hands shook as I walked through the stone hallways and into the throne room…” She trailed off, her eyes far away.
“She listened as I told my story, listened to my complaints and my excuses. But just when I expected her to render judgement, to punish me for my theft and my desperation, she began to tell me a story of her own.”
Namonora’s face clouded over, in anger or fear or hate, Rowan was not sure.
“She told me a story of evil men, and a narrow escape. Of violence and power and corruption and abuse. I do not know how much of it was true, if any. And I don’t know why she decided to tell it to me. But I remember what Maeve said once she finished.” A deep breath.
“She told me that we should accept the vileness. That instead of trying to change the wicked, instead of trying to fix or heal or learn, we must make ourselves more powerful. That the only way to right the wrongs done to us, is to ensure that they suffered in kind.
“She told me that she would do all she could to win. All she could to protect herself. And to take the revenge she thought herself owed.”
Namonora’s voice was as ice.
“Before she let me go that day, our Queen said that I would owe her for this. That one day, she would call in this debt of mine. I promised her I would do as she asked, then she sent me away to be trained. To learn the healing arts, hidden away in the compound astride the capital city.”
Rowan couldn’t tear his eyes away from the healer, couldn’t help the dread that pooled in his stomach as he began to suspect what was coming next…
“I learned well, and years passed. The work was difficult, and yet those were the safest and most comfortable years I had yet experienced. Though always, the shadow of that debt hung over me, a cat just waiting to pounce. And then, nearly a decade later, she sent for me once more.
“Even though I was no longer that scared little girl, even though I had learned and grown and become an accomplished healer, it was no different this time than the last. My hands still trembled as I walked through those granite hallways, and I can still remember the way my heartbeat pounded in my eardrums.
“And my fear was not unwarranted.”
Rowan felt the dread begin to curdle in his gut.
“Maeve wanted to ask me to become her personal healer, to be by her side and protect her always. She wanted me to swear the blood oath. To be her slave.” A deep breath. “I declined her offer.”
Rowan’s gaze fixed to the floor.
“So that is why I am here, Prince. Despite my many accomplishments. Why I have been banished to the fringes. I refused to do her bidding, and she punished me accordingly.”
Namonora raised her arms to Rowan, and pulled up the long sleeves of her linen gown – revealing ancient, mottled scars. The remnants of deep burns.
“Maeve controls through fear. And she does whatever she can to best serve her own interests, regardless of the harm. Even by defeating and subjugating her enemies before they even become so.” She lowered her arms, letting the sleeves pool once more to cover the old injuries. Her gaze was a stone thrown at his face.
“You know this prince; you have been doing this for her for centuries now. But this girl, this princess...she is different. She could be something different.”
Rowan turned his eyes away, but Namonora was undeterred.
“You must protect her. Even if you have to sacrifice the whole of the fortress to do so, you must keep her safe. This fight doesn’t matter – war is coming. And it is bigger than a fortress in the mists of Doranelle.”
Her voice was insistent. “You must save her, But not for you. Not for your own happiness. The world turns on that child’s fingertips, and I think you know it. Do not forget what your queen has done for power.”
There was a pause, but then Rowan raised his head to see Aelin and the girl, across the way, laughing with each other. Bright. Warm.
He turned to face Namonora, and he nodded.

They spent the rest of the evening back at the fortress, discussing their plans for the next few days. They had left Emrys, along with a selection of sentries and few other older demi-Fae who would not be able to fight, with the healers. Rowan wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to forget the look on Malakai’s face as he walked away from his mate.
Darkness fell, the moon rose, and soon he and Aelin were making their way to bed. Within a minute of entering their rooms, Aelin was undressed and flopping into bed, a sigh of relief escaping her lips.
Instead of joining her, Rowan turned to the washbasin, peeling off his shirt and beginning to clean the seat and grime from his limbs. “You did well helping me plan tonight.”
Her reply was wry. “You sound surprised.”
Rowan wiped his face, then leaned against the dresser, bracing his hands against either end. The wood groaned in protest.
Everything had changed between them, and yet absolutely nothing had.
Rowan began to turn back to face her, but his eyes were caught by a golden glint. Aelin had left Goldryn casually leaning against the bedpost, its ruby smoldering in the dim light. Rowan ran a finger across the hit.
What a flimsy shield he had given her. Namonora’s words swirled in his mind, and he wished, wished with everything he had, that he could protect her. Could keep her safe.
Rowan let go of the dresser and approached the bed. “I sent word,” he said, the words slipping from his lips as if by accident. “To my…cadre, as you like to call them.”
Aelin’s face tightened, almost imperceptibly. “When?”
“A few days ago. I don’t know where they all are or whether they’ll arrive in time. Maeve might not let them come – or some of them might not even ask her. They can be…unpredictable. And it may be that I just get the order to return to Doranelle, and – ”
“You actually called for aid?” She cut off his babbling.
His eyes narrowed. I just said that I did.
She stood, and he retreated a step. What changed your mind?
Some things are worth the risk.
This time, he didn’t back away as Aelin took another step towards him. And another. Her face was filled with some deep emotion, a well so dark he could not see the bottom.
Her words were ragged. “I claim you, Rowan Whitethorn. I don’t care what you say and how much you protest. I claim you as my friend.”
Rowan turned away from her before she could see the way his face twisted, before she could read the words that would surely be obvious there.
Because it didn’t matter. Even if they survived, when they went to Doranelle, she would walk out of Maeve’s realm alone.
And it hurt.
Her words wormed inside him and ached and festered and itched.
Hurt even more because he knew that under different circumstances, in a different life, he would be filled with joy. And love. And happiness and every other hopeful and tragic and heart-wrenching emotion you feel when you’re accepted by another person for exactly who you are.
Rowan stood there, listening as Aelin rustled the covers, getting herself settled in for sleep. He collected himself, then padded over to join her.
As he settled into bed beside her, it almost seemed as though she relaxed into his form. Her breaths coming more even, and her lithe body falling comfortably still.
But they did not touch, and all night Rowan knew he would feel the pressure of that hollow ache, that need to wrap his arms around her, to feel her skin on his and know that she was still alive.
To believe that perhaps, she could be his. As he was already hers.
