Fairy cats.
In the folk tale "The King of Cats" a traveling man either hears of the death of the oddly named previous King of Cats or observes a royal funeral held by cats for their king. After arriving home the man speaks about what he'd seen when his housecat, also often strangely named, proclaims that they are now the King of Cats and rushes out of the house, typically through the chimney.
The many cats in this story are all usually considered cait sìth.

Look, I love Max and I think the backlash he received was disproportionate to him dismissing the Gaelic pronunciation of Cait Sith, but there's NO WAY, in twenty years time and all his time being a YouTuber, that nobody commented on it and gave a sufficient explanation on why it's not Kate Sihth and that he only just leaned about it the other day like... 🤣
youtube
Still, I think this video does a good job on explaining the situation and usually when you tell people they're doing something wrong or that they shouldn't do or say something they get really defensive and do it anyway but Max didn't, I just wish it took less... Twitter violence to get here 😭🤣😅
In any case, after so many years of Raeeoos and Hadookens and Raydens and the like, I don't expect much from native English speakers anymore 🤣

Sherlock Holmes was an otherworldly creature indeed. I am no man of superstition, although I vaguely remember my grandmother’s tales of daione sìth. Holmes did not distinctly resemble any of the fair folk, these light, ethereally beautiful golden-haired men and women, and yet somehow he gave the same impression. His smooth, almost catlike movements reminded me of cait-sìth and, in all honesty, during investigations he often was the very picture of a predator pursuing the prey or cat playing with mice. I could easily imagine him in the highlands of my homeland, windy and boundless, as to my mind he had the soul of Scottish winds, but I also understood perfectly well that there was no place for him anywhere except in London, hustling and bustling and pulsating with life, crimes and mysteries.
He was not completely detached from the human world, basically having an excellent understanding of human affections, related to the motives of crimes, such as love or envy, though his knowledge clearly came from prolonged observation rather than from personal experience. He was wise enough to seek my aid when something eluded his understanding, which I prefer to consider as a sign of trust on his part.
He was too theatrical or too aloof at times — traits that I mostly attribute to the eccentricity inherent in genius. He also aged much more slowly than me, but this could easily be associated with our slightly spreading ages and his lack of habit of taking anything too personally, which I am often guilty of. Although in the decade we knew each other, I turned almost half gray, and he remained largely the same, except for a couple of new wrinkles and heavier bags under his eyes.
His voice was the voice of a siren or ben-varrey and he had a natural gift of instantly capturing the attention of everyone in the room with the help of said voice and some kind of internal magnetism, which made people instinctively trust him and obey him.
And yet my favourite of his many noble traits I dedicated myself to immortalise was perhaps his benevolence. With such a mind, such power, it would be too easy to use it for evil, something we had unfortunately seen too many times. His gaze on me which I felt quite often was never heavy or insolent and had not ever bothered me. Clients — those at least who seemed nice and did not irritate him immediately — he treated with kind patience, amiable interest and generous if sometimes mannered hospitality, being rude not out of intention to offend, but simply out of his energetic, eccentric nature.
“I am afraid I have accidentally enchanted you, my dear friend", he suddenly said, somewhat sadly and apologetically, one quiet evening on Baker Street. “That kind of devotion that you show to me cannot be expected from any man under normal circumstances.”
“That kind of devotion,” I thought to myself ruefully later that night, “has nothing in common with sidhe’s enchantments.”
Tumblr media
This is my first attempt to capture Jeremy Brett's magnificence, and I feel like I haven't done him justice, so there will probably be other takes. Also first attempt in publishing something on Tumblr and nearly first — in writing in English, so feel free to point out any mistakes.
Following a long and good fandom tradition, I consider Watson to be Scottish, hence the writing of almost all the creatures mentioned in Scots.
The cat-sith, whose existence I learned about unacceptably late and did not change anything much, is hunting in the Scottish wastelands. It has an unhealthy addiction to corpses, so it is recommended to distract him with games and riddles, as well as warmth. Doesn't remind you of anyone? However, while writing, I mostly thought about the classic sidhe, adjusted for, uh, almost everything.
I don't know myself whether he is a magical creature, think what you want. To be honest, being portrayed as a magical creature seems unfair to Holmes as a character — part of his charm for me is precisely the fact that he is human, an outstanding human being.

Cat-Sìth | Scottish Folklore
Tumblr media
If you have ever wondered why black cats are associated with Halloween, the cat-sìth/cait-sìth may be the reason.
They are described as giant black cats with a spot on their chests, an arched back, and long hair always standing upright and bristly.
“Elfin cats (cait shìth) are explained to be of a wild, not a domesticated, breed, to be as large as dogs, of a black colour, with a white spot on the breast, and to have arched backs and erect bristles” “Superstitions of the Highlands & Islands of Scotland” by John Gregorson Campbell (1900)
Tumblr media
On Samhain(the early version of Halloween), when the cat-sìth was said to roam around, many families would leave out a bowl of milk to keep in the cat-sìth‘s good favour. If you did that, you would be blessed, if you forgot, you would be cursed.
As well as that, some people in the Scottish highlands were often fearful of the cat-sìth stealing the souls of the recently dead and carrying them away to the otherworld, so people would stand watch over their loved one until they could be buried. This was called Feil Fadalach or Late Wake. Essentially, this involved a large number of activities to distract the cat-sìth, such as games, dancing, contests, riddles, and even catnip spread over the house. All the fires in the room with the body would be put out, since cats like warmth (though this would also help keep the body from decomposing as quickly).
Eventually, a change of beliefs changed the cat-sìth from a fairy, into a witch. The myth that cats have nine lives is said to come from the fact that a witch could transform to a cat exactly 8 times. If she did it a 9th time, she would be a cat forever.
High-landers commonly explained the cat síth as a transformed witch, not a fairy.  A Dictionary of Celtic Mythology
The cat-sìth is not to be confused with Big Ears, the demonic god of the cats. He was said to be even bigger and more ferocious.
“But Big Ears was a monstrous demon cat who had only a slight connection with the Cait Sith.” “A Encyclopedia of Fairies” by Katharine Briggs (Published in 1976)
That is a story I won’t be covering, because I think it will be too troubling for people. Putting it bluntly, there was a belief that if you brutally tortured a certain number of cats to death in a certain way(known as the taghairm), Big Ears would appear, and grant you wishes in return for your soul.

I think it'd be so interesting if there were different fae/folk creatures in each court that you don't really find in other courts. like. for example. despite many celtic nations having some folklore that overlaps, they still have many that are their own
ex. The Morrigan is STRICTLY an Irish Goddess. Considering SJM bastardized and vilified Ireland, why is Mor in the Night court?
ANYWAYS
ok so I consider a lot of the spring court related to Scotland. Why? dunno. it's just a vibe. tho I believe that Ballad of Tam Lin is also a scottish folk ballad if I'm remembering correctly
okokokokok so while the Cat-Shìth CAN be found in Ireland, it is a lot more prevalent in Scottish Folklore, especially the Scottish Highlands
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland is VERY likely Based! on! the! Cat! Sìth!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
Tamlin having to deal with the irritating riddles and nonsense from the Cait-Shìth and having to try to get them to leave him and his people alone via music and his damn fiddle ok thanks 😭😭😭
ANYWAYS THE SPRING COURT HAVING CAT-SÌTH

I've binged this beautiful mess for several days and, by god, does it deliver! !!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Let me try going chronologically:
Zack!Cloud is absolutely adorable and shows very good acting because you can hear the difference from Zack's dialogue from Cloud's reaction when learning it's Nibelheim where they are heading to.
Definitely see those SephirothxZack fics going on rise after unsettlingly sweet expressions on Sephiroth during Nibelheim. Also those subtle changes on his face in that iconic town in flames scene, just wow.
Rufus's parade was one of the highlights, but some new guy Glenn shenaningans were there like "hello, if you'd like to know more about this subplot please consider buying some spinoff mobile game you've never heard of", because even in the end all I got from this was - Glenn is a) some dude in Wutai working for a man we never saw and who might not even exist, b) has some bitter history with Rufus and c) also is a Sephiroth clone.
Speaking of Rufus, eng voice actor is on point. He is the english equivalent of japanese voice actor who unfortunately seems to have been affected by illness. I'm very sad about that. But good job, eng va and his casting director!
While I'm on this topic, Reno's orignal va loss also saddens me. New jp va is a bit too nasal for me, and there's no Quinton Flynn to soften the blow.
Morikawa Toshiyuki is perfect as always in his rendition of Sephiroth. His gentle speech to Jenova in Nibelheim reactor is just... You just have to hear it.
youtube
Ahem. So, Rufus' offer in Junon really surprised me.
Moving on to Costa Del Sol, was nice to see the reason why Hojo appeared there of all places and, oh dear, they made him so creepy it's astounding. The way he so offhandedly and casually offered those girls to "birth a hero" is something else.
I'll skip Corel immediately to Golden Saucer. It's everything I wanted. It's everything I didn't know I wanted. The entrance introduction is Honey Bee all over again but even more cringe. There are no words for this level of cringe. I felt vindicated for the loss of that Honey Bee's bathtub scene in the Remake, that's how cringe it is. I'm sorry, I can't stop staring at Dio's chest.
Now, Cait Sith deserves its own paragraph. It's the best, the cutest, the coolest Cait Sith ever. This "Aeris-ha~n", awww. Animation and design is top-notch, from Cait's small dance to the ears to the moogle's belly jiggle. Reeve has to be some kind of animatronics genius. Also in eng version it has scottish accent. Know why? Because of this
Also, Ghost Hotel's front desk employee is hilarious. He seems to genuinely love his job, goddamn it.
youtube
Poor Rude having to work with Elena, lol. Nice sea-salt ice cream, by the way.
Some sidequests are my type of morbid humour. Check out this:
youtube
New Gi lore was interesting. Finally I learned how Black Materia was made. Also made interesting possible insight into Sephiroth, with being unable to join lifestream and all.
Vincent va is so good and in jp version I sometimes can hear Rufus's va past timbre. Also, that drip is sick.
Loveless scene was astounding. I'm talking about animation quality here. Dance moves look so smooth and natural, especially cloth mechanics, just look at Jessie's skirt! I have no idea how many hours they put into these.
New Nibelheim also makes more sense than in original. No more "wdym, nothing happened here". Also, Cloud remembered Zack but his mind makes up some things.
It's nice to see Cloud's gradual descent into madness, especially with Roche becoming that. (Why SC tattoo though. I know it's probably Sephiroth Cells, but I just can't unsee SephirothxCloud, lmao). Cloud chasing Aerith for black materia sent chills down my spine.
As did Sephiroth's hysterical laugh when his sword broke but Aerith still died. Yeah, sorry, dude. This is fixed.
Those AU scenes and some unchanging points are interesting to explore for fics though.

In a series full of DIY pronunciations, this mechanical fairy cat’s technically-accurate-but-contextually-flabbergasting name has got to be the most frustrating for the average late ’90s English-speaking tween to figure out. Decades spent assuming his name was a homophone of Kathy the fallen Jedi.

Belated Caturday Special: Hybrids
#Caturday #Special: #Hybrids - From #Domestic hybrids like #Caracats #Savannah #Cats and #Bengals through semi-#wild #Landrace hybrids like the #Kellas #Cat to #Ligers and #Tigons - What is a hybrid and why? #CatLovers #CatsofTwitter #Nature #Wildlife
The Liger – Possibly the most famous of all the felid hybrids because of its enormous size and spectacle. However, is it ethical to breed creatures such as these? I say no. Most conservationists agree. Most people who make money off them disagree. (Credit: Camphora Public Domain) A hybrid cat is not a cat that runs on both meat and electricity. I mean, if I wanted to blow your biological little…

The Cat-Sìth [Celtic mythology; Scottish mythology; Irish mythology]
Cait-Shìth (the plural of Cat-Sìth) are creatures from Scottish and Irish mythology. These faeries resemble black cats with a white patch of fur on the chest. In some stories they walked upright on their hind legs, and are generally regarded as malicious creatures. Cait-Shìth are much larger than normal cats, usually about the size of a large dog, and their backs are adorned with sharp bristles that point upwards.
I have found claims that the Cait-Shìth had the ability to steal a person’s soul by walking over the dead body before it was properly buried. However, if you left a bowl of milk outside your door during the Gaelic Samhain festival, the Cait-Shìth would magically bless the inhabitants of the house. I have yet to back up these two claims with a source.
Some stories claim that the Cat-Sìth isn’t actually a faery at all, nor is it related to the faery folk. This interpretation holds that a Cat-Sìth is actually a witch with the ability to shape-shift into the form of a black cat. I find it difficult to distinguish original myths from modern retellings on this point, but some versions claim that such a witch can use this transformation spell 9 times in her life. When she transforms into a cat for the 9th and final time, she can never again take the form of a human.

Faebruary 7th - Cait Sith
The cait-sìth is a fairy creature from Celtic mythology, said to resemble a large black cat with a white spot on its chest. Legend has it that the spectral cat haunts the Scottish Highlands. The legends surrounding this creature are more common in Scottish folklore, but a few occur in Irish. Some common folklore suggested that the cat-sìth was not a fairy, but a witch that could transform into a cat nine times.
They believed that it could steal a person's soul, before it was claimed by the gods, by passing over a corpse before burial; therefore, watches called the Fèill Fhadalach (Late Wake) were performed night and day to keep the cat-sìth away from a corpse before burial.

Caliber Session 16: The Trial of Ursa Carpenter, Part 4
I finally, finally managed to write another recap! This must mean I no longer have depression
[This session was an interesting one! Since Merlin and Nora wouldn’t be present for much of the trial itself, I instead asked Adam and Melissa to play Cait-Sìth (the Prosecution) and Elene (the Defense) respectively. They did a better job than I ever could have.] Merlin looked down at his ruined shirt. The potion he’d gotten from Alkahest had done wonders on the not-bleeding-to-death front, but…

I don’t know why but I want an excuse to introduce the other Sith faes from Celtic folklore into my medieval au
Cait-Sìth are fairy creatures that resemble large black cats with a white spot on their chests. Legends vary whether the Cait-sìth are fairies that can steal human souls or witches who can transform into a cat nine times.
Cù Sìth are the canine counterparts to the Cait-sìth. They are large dogs with shaggy, dark green coats and capable of hunting silently, but occasionally let out terrifying barks that can be heard for miles. Those who hear the bark of a Cù Sìth must find safety by the third bark or be overcome with terror to the point of death.
Babobhan Sith are beautiful female vampires that wear long green dresses or cloaks to conceal their hooved feet. They drink from humans and will usually seduce their victims before drinking from them. They can also take on the form of a hooded crow or raven
