Your favourite rarepair in MAS*H - elimination round four
I am sorry, but we say goodbye to Bigelow and Kelly here - they got only four votes out of the 20 voted. But this means we are down to the last two rounds, so each poll will not last a week.
Will it be Father Mulcahy and his lovely Jewish paratrooper rabbi?
"Well, there's Captain Epstein. He's a very fine Jewish chaplain. We went through indoctrination together. Lovely fellow, Eppy. Water-skier, paratrooper. A bit meshuga, actually."
Will it be the two Boston boys, meeting either at or after the 4077th - two big tall men from different sides of the tracks, united by a love for Hawkeye Pierce and for surgery?
Will it be the exasperated professional and regular military officer Margaret Houlihan and the single-mother-for-two-years and in dire need of The Feminine Mystique, Margaret-known-to-her-husband-as-Peg Hunnicutt? How will you decide? Reblog with your theories in tags.

Prologue: Lily
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Fem!Reader
Summary: Lily McIntire, trainer for new SHIELD recruits at the Avengers Tower, has been in love with her best friend, Bucky Barnes, from the moment she met him. She's been content with her role of the #1 girl in Bucky's life, even if it means she has to sabotage a romantic relationship or two. It'll be worth it when he realizes that they're meant for each other, right? There's just one small problem: Lily McIntire never expected Bucky Barnes to fall for You.

Best friends to Lovers. Lily McIntyre couldn’t think of a single thing more romantic than that. She’d spent her entire life searching for that one person who would transcend the bonds of friendship into something so much more, and for years, she’d been left wanting. So many friendships left to flounder when the necessary spark failed to materialize, so many seemingly perfect connections ruined because she wanted more than any of these so-called “best” friends could give. It felt unfair. It felt cruel. It felt hopeless.
Until.
Lily remembered the day like it were yesterday, forever seared into her memory as though it had been branded there, and it in a way, it had been, because the moment she met Bucky Barnes had become an indelible part of her, a core moment in the creation of the perfect life she desired– no, deserved to have.
It was warm for late March, the birdsong thick in the air as she ran a batch of new SHIELD recruits through their drills on the outside training track of the new Avengers’ Compound in Upstate New York. She hadn’t been thrilled with Tony Stark when he’d insisted on moving the operation out of the city proper, but she had to admit, being away from the congestion of the metropolis ended up having its perks. Besides, the city was still close enough to enjoy all the amenities it had to offer.
She’d just sent her group off to do sprints when she saw Captain America, himself, approach her, followed by a stranger she’d never seen before.
She was immediately struck by how gorgeous he was– chiseled jaw, piercing blue eyes, shy, timid smile. Perfection, she thought, as Captain Rogers introduced the man as his best friend, James “Bucky” Barnes.
“Lily runs the training program for new SHIELD recruits,” the Captain was saying. Lily found she could only nod and smile as Steve explained the training program, so transfixed was she by this handsome new stranger. Bucky listened with polite interested, then said something about wanting to go check out the obstacle course, and as he walked away, the Captain leaned toward Lily and spoke softly, so as not to be overheard.
“Buck’s going to be joining us in the Compound. Aside from me, he hasn’t really got any other friends, so, you think you could help make him feel at home? Maybe try to be his friend?”
“It would be an honor, Captain,” Lily agreed, smiling. Absolute perfection.

Trapper in 'The Interview'
In 2006, Larry Gelbart wrote dialogue imagining Trapper, Henry Blake, and Colonel Flagg had featured in the M*A*S*H episode 'The Interview'. Here is Trapper's, with the original available to read here via Google Groups.
REPORTER: Captain John McIntyre is a surgeon attached here at the 4077. What they call a chest cutter, is that right, Captain? TRAPPER JOHN: Right. I look inside ’em for any souvenirs our troops might be trying to smuggle home as souvenirs. REPORTER: And removing them forthwith. TRAPPER JOHN: I don’t get into a lot of fights from any patients who want to hold on to them. REPORTER: A lot of them are very young, is that true? TRAPPER JOHN: Too young to be doing what they’re doing. Our job’s giving ’em a chance to get old.
REPORTER: You have a most unusual nickname, I’m told. “Trapper John,” is that correct? TRAPPER JOHN: It’s a hangover from college. REPORTER: Would you tell us how you got it? TRAPPER JOHN: The hangover? REPORTER: The nickname. TRAPPER JOHN: Nope. REPORTER: Too personal? TRAPPER JOHN: Sorry. REPORTER: Didn’t mean to pry. TRAPPER JOHN: I’ll tell you the college, if you like. REPORTER: But not how you – TRAPPER JOHN: It happened a long time ago. Happened B.M., you could say. Before marriage. REPORTER: Well, we certainly wouldn’t want to get you into any trouble back home. TRAPPER JOHN: Let me tell clue you in on something: I wouldn’t mind being in trouble back home one bit. I wouldn’t mind anything if I could be doing it back home. REPORTER: It’s not easy being this far away. TRAPPER JOHN: You know what’s easy? Hating being this far away. Hating just being a picture on the mantle that my two little girls say goodnight to. REPORTER: General Sherman was right, huh? About war being hell? TRAPPER JOHN: If generals hate war so much, how come they can never wait to get into the next one? REPORTER: I understand you tried to adopt what you thought was a Korean orphan some time back. TRAPPER JOHN: I thought I could make us both a little less miserable about what was going on here. Happily, the kid’s mother was still alive. REPORTER: That would have been a lovely gesture. TRAPPER JOHN: I’m not big on gestures. Unless there’s some kind of payoff. REPORTER: Would you like to say hello to your own children right now? TRAPPER JOHN: Not really. Not as just one more picture in our living room. It’s enough they’re seeing me. That’s a big enough kick for all of us. REPORTER: Do you feel this experience has in any way helped you as a doctor? TRAPPER JOHN: Let me ask you a question: just how many people you figure’re going to be carried into my office someday with a chunk of shrapnel sticking out of their heads? I don’t know where you live, pal, but where I come from very few folks ever step on a landmine in the middle of trying to cross the street. REPORTER: Would you say there’s been any positive aspect of any of this for you at all? TRAPPER JOHN: Of course, there is. You see people at their best around here – see them coping with the results of what some people can do when they’re at their worst. REPORTER: The doctors, you mean? TRAPPER JOHN: The doctors. The nurses. The orderlies – Koreans, mostly. Every day kind of bleeds into the next around here – in every sense of the word – the routine gets to be fairly unmemorable. But I have the feeling that years from now I’m gonna remember each and every one of them. And the face that goes with each one. (A PAUSE; THEN TO THE CAMERA) Hi, sweetheart. Hi, Becky. Hi, Cathy.

Power Walk
Tumblr media
YN watched Drew McIntyre from a distance, her curiosity piqued by his peculiar gait. He strode across the backstage area with a purposeful stride, his muscles rippling beneath the fabric of his t-shirt. It was hard not to notice him, especially when he moved in such a distinctive way.
She leaned against a nearby wall, a smirk tugging at the corner of her lips as she called out to him, "Why are you walking like that?"
Drew turned towards her, his blue eyes meeting hers with a mix of surprise and amusement. He chuckled, his Scottish accent adding an extra layer of charm to his response. "Walking like what, lass?"
YN's grin widened as she pushed herself off the wall and approached him. "Like you're about to step into the ring and take on a whole army of opponents."
Drew laughed heartily, his deep voice resonating through the corridor. "Ah, you've noticed, have you?"
YN nodded, her playful demeanor infectious. "Of course! It's like you're on a mission or something."
He shrugged, a playful glint in his eyes. "Well, a Scotsman's gotta have a bit of flair even when he's off-duty, don't you think?"
As they walked together, YN fell into step beside him, matching his stride as best she could. It wasn't easy, considering Drew's long legs and purposeful pace, but she managed to keep up. They talked about the upcoming event, trading stories and laughter along the way.
"You know," Drew said after a while, a thoughtful look crossing his face, "sometimes it's all about the mindset. Walking like this helps me get into the right frame of mind, whether it's for a match or just facing the challenges of the day."
YN tilted her head, genuinely intrigued. "So, it's like your way of psyching yourself up?"
He nodded, a genuine smile touching his lips. "Aye, you could say that. It's a reminder that I'm capable of handling whatever comes my way, no matter how tough it might seem."
They reached a quiet corner of the backstage area, away from the hustle and bustle of the event. Drew turned to face YN, his expression earnest. "You know, lass, you can adopt your own power walk, even if you're not stepping into a ring."
She raised an eyebrow, a playful challenge in her eyes. "Oh really? And how would that work?"
Drew's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Stand tall, shoulders back, head held high. Stride purposefully, as if you're walking towards your next great adventure. And most importantly, believe in yourself. It's all about confidence."
YN chuckled, giving him an exaggerated nod. "Got it, Captain Confidence."
Drew laughed heartily again, the sound echoing in the corridor. "That's the spirit, YN."
As they continued their stroll, YN couldn't help but feel a newfound sense of determination. Maybe adopting a power walk, even in the mundane moments of life, was just what she needed to break through her own writer's block. With Drew's words echoing in her mind, she took a deep breath, adjusted her posture, and walked beside him with newfound purpose, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
With each step, YN could feel a surge of confidence coursing through her veins. It was as if Drew's advice had ignited a spark within her, reminding her that she too had the strength to overcome any obstacles, whether they were within the realm of wrestling or the realm of creativity.
As they walked, YN's thoughts began to wander, weaving a story in her mind. She imagined a character much like Drew, a fierce and determined warrior who faced not only physical opponents but also the trials of the heart. Her fingers itched to jot down the ideas forming in her mind, the writer's block she had been struggling with fading into the background.
Drew noticed her thoughtful expression and nudged her playfully. "I can practically see the wheels turning in that creative mind of yours."
YN laughed, a newfound energy radiating from her. "You have no idea. I think you've inadvertently given me the inspiration I needed."
He grinned, clearly pleased. "Well, I'm glad to have been of service, lass. Just remember, that power walk isn't just for show. It's a reminder that you're in control of your path."
As they reached the end of the corridor, YN's phone buzzed with a message notification. She glanced at the screen and chuckled. "Looks like my best friend is wondering where I disappeared to. She's probably worried I got lost in the labyrinth of backstage corridors."
Drew chuckled alongside her. "Well, we wouldn't want that. Best not to keep her waiting."
YN nodded, her fingers already dancing across the screen as she typed out a quick reply. "Don't worry, I've just been getting some impromptu life advice from a certain Scottish powerhouse."
Her friend's reply came almost instantly. "Oh, I can only imagine. Is he teaching you how to execute a Claymore Kick too?"
YN grinned and showed the message to Drew. "Seems like you're gaining quite the reputation."
Drew laughed, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Ah, it's all in good fun."
As YN and Drew made their way back towards the main area, she couldn't help but reflect on how a simple question about his walk had led to a meaningful conversation and a newfound burst of inspiration. She realized that sometimes, the smallest interactions could have the most profound impact.
"Thank you, Drew," she said softly, a genuine warmth in her voice.
He clasped her shoulder, his smile kind. "Anytime, YN. Just remember, whenever you feel that writer's block creeping in, channel that power walk and face it head-on."
And so, with a renewed sense of purpose and a creative fire in her heart, YN bid farewell to Drew and returned to her best friend, ready to dive back into her fanfiction with a newfound determination. As she typed away, her fingers moving with a newfound rhythm, she couldn't help but feel grateful for the unexpected encounter that had turned her day around in the most unexpected and wonderful way.

Summary:
It's the middle of the night - a cold spring night - and Margaret is stuck in the middle of nowhere with the last two people on earth she'd want to be stuck with: Captains Pierce and McIntyre. And it's only getting colder.
Happily, I can now share this with the whole world! Did anyone fancy a Hawkeye x Trapper x Margaret fic?

"The Entropy Effect" review
Tumblr media
Novel from 1981, by Vonda N. McIntyre (same author of the novelizations for the Star Trek movies II, III and IV). This is also the first TOS novel of the Pocket Book line, not counting the novelization for TMP. Even though the Bantam books have some nice stories (in particular, those by the Haldeman brothers are pretty decent), they all seem more like episodes of the series. This is the first time I had the impression of reading a proper novel, and the leap in quality is evident. I really, really liked this novel. It's also veeeery sad; it even made me shed some tears. Of course the reader knows this is Star Trek, and everything will turn out fine in the end, but the sense of despair the author conveys is quite effective nonetheless.
The characters are given much depth, and even the bunch of new additions receive proper attention, and their own side-stories and aspirations. The relations between the triumvirate are pretty much flawless (with echoes from "The Tholian Web"; Spock and McCoy are the real protagonists here). And surprisingly, Sulu has his own subplot and a romance story.
I can't really think of many downsides. Maybe it's a bit slow at the beginning, specially since it needs to introduce the new cast. But as I found the original characters interesting and likeable, it wasn't a major issue for me. Also, the story involves time-travel, so expect the usual head-scratching moments. Though as far as I noticed, there were no plot holes.
Some spoilers below the cut:
Spock is investigating an unusual black hole, and his observations make him reach the disturbing conclusion that entropy is rapidly accelerating, and the universe may have little more than 100 years to disappear. He's about to confirm his suspicions, when the Enterprise is suddenly diverted to the Aleph Prime station by a maximum priority message, so Spock has to leave his work half-finished.
In the station, they're greeted by prosecutor Ian Braithewaite, who is confused at first, since he didn't send any urgent message. Nonetheless, he had asked for a ship to help him bring a prisoner to a rehabilitation colony, so Kirk accepts, once he learns the identity of such prisoner. He's an old physics professor of Spock: George Mordreaux, and Spock is sure he can prove his mentor's innocence, for the charges of murder and unethical experimentation. But when he tries to learn more about the case, he finds all info and details have been erased, so there's something definitely fishy about it all. In the station, Kirk also reunites with Captain Hunter, an old girlfriend, and has serious doubts about his decision to break up with her. He even considers the option of leaving the Enterprise and giving another chance at their relationship. For his part, Sulu has fallen in love with the new security chief: Mandala Flynn. But leaves her, and the Enterprise, to join Hunter's crew, in the hope that this will further his career.
Thus the Enterprise, minus Sulu, starts the trip to the rehab colony, with Modreaux and Braithewaite aboard. Spock insists the professor isn't dangerous, and places minimal security on him. Everything goes awry when the professor appears inexplicably on the bridge, and shoots Kirk and Mandala with a spiderweb gun. This spiderweb has really gruesome effects: it creates some sort of metallic web inside a body, which expands quickly through all organs, even covering the eyes. However, Mordreaux doesn't seem to have left his cell at all, and no intruder or imposter is found aboard. Soon thereafter, Mandala is dead. While McCoy completely breaks down, and insists on keeping Kirk artificially "alive" through machines (though deep down, he knows Kirk is dead for real). In the end, Spock convinces McCoy to disconnect the machines. And there's a gut-wrenching scene, in clinical detail, where McCoy starts turning off all the life systems on him.
After Kirk's death, Spock and McCoy are left in a similar situation as in "The Tholian Web". Though in the episode Kirk had simply disappeared, so there was still hope. Here things are far more depressing. McCoy can't accept Kirk's death, and pressures Spock to try time-travel to save him. Spock refuses to play like that with the space-time continuum. However, while interrogating the professor in his cell, Spock learns that the real reason he's convicted, is because he's been tampering with time travel through a new device. This disruption may be behind the entropy effects Spock had previously discovered. And it's also behind the murder of Kirk, at the hands of a future, insane version of Mordreaux. Since all these events are the results of time alterations, Spock needs, in fact, to travel back in time, and restore things to their original order.
With the help of the (still sane) professor, Spock initiates a series of failed attempts at fixing things in the past. While gradually deteriorating through each time travel. And McCoy has a hard time, being left in charge of the ship and covering up for Spock (they can't tell anyone else about the device, in fear of being arrested for it, just as Mordreaux). Meanwhile, Braithewaite is being a pain in the ass, and gets paranoid about Spock and McCoy having conspired to murder Kirk. He even manages to make Scotty suspicious of them, so things get even more complicated.
In summary, the stakes are pretty high, and the story gets really exciting (and sometimes frustrating for poor Spock and McCoy).
McSpirk Meter: 10/10. I usually only rate the Kirk/Spock material, since is far more common, and ranges wildly from one novel to another (with some of them being borderline slash). But in this occasion is impossible to separate the members of the triumvirate, as the love goes in all three directions.
For starters, there's Spock casting aside all his reservations about hand touching, when Kirk is shot with the spiderweb (maybe this is the first time it's explicitly stated that Vulcans avoid touching hands?). He tries to mind-meld with Kirk while he's dying, perhaps to die himself instead, but Kirk pushes him away to save him.
Then there's the absolutely devastating effect that Kirk's death has on McCoy. He gets totally drunk, breaks down among sobs, and finally passes out. Spock carries him in his arms and puts him to bed; then keeps watch while he sleeps. Later, McCoy starts crying again while viewing Kirk's last will. But once he learns it's possible to bring him back, he's all sunshine once more. Still, the mere reliving of his death is enough to bring him to tears, even while on the bridge. McCoy's pain for losing Kirk is also compared to that of Hunter (who was Kirk's lover), and Sulu's grief for Mandala (also a lover). When Hunter asks McCoy what he has to gain by helping Spock in his mysterious plans, he answers "everything".
Spock deals with the loss of his Captain in a far more subdued, Vulcan way, but it's evident he's falling apart too. He doesn't want to stay in the Enterprise anymore, and once he completes his duties aboard, he's probably going to leave Starfleet altogether.
McCoy has also some tender moments with Spock while treating his wounds, and choosing civilian clothes for him (which he says that enhance Spock's eyes).
Once everything's been solved, Spock lies in bed while recovering, and Kirk and McCoy take turns watching him. Only Spock remembers the events of the altered timeline (for everyone else it feels just like a nightmare). And Spock's reaction upon waking up and seeing Kirk alive has to be read to believe it. Let's say, a mixture of "this simple feeling", and his smile at the end of "Amok Time".
