Been seeing a lot about cartoons becoming lost media and I swear to literally everything holy if this happens to Bee and Puppycat I will lose my absolute marbles. Like it’s already so hard to find the comics or the official books from the pre Netflix release but if it gets worse I’ll scream. haha yes i watched zerocalcare's new goofy sociopolitical cartoon and i did NOT angrily ugly cry almost the entire way through at the way it portrays the utter complete loss of any perspective in life for young generations, the sense of powerlessness in front on the indifference of most, the criminalization of immigrants and political militants, and the way some of the poorest strata of the population is getting absorbed by a rising neofacist movement that's spurred along by the institutions.

As an adult looking back it’s weird that Omi in Xiaolin Showdown was a vivid yellow, right? This isn’t a dig at the show btw, it was one of my favorite things growing up. I’m just thinking about character design.

Like, as a kid it’s just “he’s a cartoon character, I literally watched Ed Edd n’ Eddy days ago so this isn’t weird.”

And it’s not just because he’s Chinese, because the show is littered with Chinese characters, it’s called Xiaolin Showdown for pity’s sake, and maybe less than a handful are as yellow as Omi over the entire series.

For every Omi and grandmaster Dashi we have more than enough Master Fungs, Chase Youngs, and Monk Guans. There’s even a guy that’s just a panda which is probably its own type of problematic but at least he’s a dude from Hong Kong that isn’t bright yellow.

Omi is a very specific design choice and I’m not even sure how to unpack it without going back over the series and seeing if there’s anything to unpack at all.

Like, this is a choice someone made, others approved, and more had to draw over and over again over the course of multiple seasons.

Like, it almost feels like it’s supposed to be okay because everyone else isn’t a vaguely racist caricature, but also why is your chief protagonist a vaguely racist caricature.

Yes I know the show creator Christy Hui is Chinese, that’s not the point. The point is that it feels weird. It’s weird, right? I can’t be the only one that thinks it’s just a little weird, right?

Occasionally we get people messaging with the idea to try to ironically design bikini armor badly, so badly it will showcase the overall absurdity etc. Sadly, there is no way way to make such a design that would not be essentially indistinguishable from many sincere creations... such as this Harpie from the Yugioh cartoon. (Previously bingo’d here)

Now the Yugioh property has an interesting and eccentric history in itself, but it’s worth remembering that this is generally understood to be a show for children... to the extent they awkwardly airbrushed out guns in one scene in a... not particularly effective manner.

The cards themselves also had a weird history of censorship with there being a general trend to just paint bodysuits onto them for non-Japanese releases (a strategy later controversially adopted in the Divinity games.

It was pretty ridiculous, but at least it wasn’t imaginary guns ridiculous.

So I suppose you’re dying to know how she looked in the censored-for-the-children wester version right?  There’s a lot of things you’d have to change right, I mean if you’re going to limit guns to being imaginary then you’d surely have to redo the whole design...

I've been thinking about @memekeymouse meta commentary then started lisening to wozwalt and how people have been still in defence of disney even though they simply don't activley make good content anymore, there is a Pearl there and there but let's be honest people making those pearls had to fight tooth and nail to even get the ideas accepted

Something something, isn't it fascinating? A company that activley does harm to YOU and all the others around you and them, yet people defend it as if it was their dear friend, it makes me think of how cartoons, ideas of cartoons, both in meta like outside ultimatley Do die in some way

But not die as in passing away, die like old versions of everyone does as there still alive, If I were to talk to myself from 5 years ago, I woudn't recognize myself, I would have nothing to talk about to them, I would be standing infront of something that's dead and unknown to me

The toon's, the ideas the media even briefly the company have changed, there not the same anymore, the idea many holds in their head is dead but, a new version looking uncannily symiliar is here and people desperatley try to act as if it was the same

There is something so incredibly human we have put in that mouse, the endless ability change
