Hi ABL!

I was wondering if you had any posts about the use of sound effects in BL - the slide whistle for checking people out/boners simply gets me every time.

Perhaps it’s because I’ve watched so much American produced media and tuning out the same concept / soundscape since I’m so used to it.

I’m also always surprised that with this love of sound effects, there hasn’t been the classic echoing noise that’s heard across oceans when they open lube!

Anyway I love your blog! It’s been an incredible resource in appreciating BL in all its glory :)

Why All those Sound Effects in BL RomComs?

I don't have a specific post. I mention it in some of my guidance and warning posts about Thai and Taiwanese stuff in particular, in general I am not wild about it... but I have grown accustomed to it. It can certainly be off putting to new watchers.

One of the worst offenders was Lovely Writer. I think I docked a whole point off that show because the sound was SO intrusive and jarring within the context of the drama.

These days the more comedy and the more pulp, the more likely and frequent the sound effects. Also Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Japan are the biggest offenders.

It's simply a comedic tradition. I think of it as similar to panto or commedia dell'arte. It's certainly true that a lot of ancient Greek and Roman plays likely had sound effects, as indeed would have Shakespeare. No to mention Kabuki theater. In fact, it's like throughout the history of stagecraft, sound effects were more common than not.

However, it's not particularly common or popular in American modern cinema out of Hollywood because it's associated with children's performances and clownishness. Like the voice overs, cartoon sound effects now are seen as somewhat clumsy and childish, not to say old fashioned.

There is an element of mistrusting the actors not to convey the correct emotion. Like the actors need audio help to do their jobs properly. But also like the audience can't be trusted to understand and so we feel "talked down to" by the sound effect. At least I do.

Yes I am aware this is a personal hang up.

Instead I think it's meant more as a communal nudge, like "we all together are responding in a certain way to this." Isn't it funny?

I also wonder if it's the influence of anime et al. (I'm really not an anime person partly because of the soundscapes. But then I don't like cartoons. Or Disney. Just not into kid's stuff. Never have been. Even when I was a kid.)

Here's someone else's perspective on Thailand's use of sound effects.

And Japan's.

I would say I'm accustomed to it now, but I still don't ever enjoy it. In fact, I often appreciate the "gritty" drama BLs like The Eighth Sense or I Told Sunset About You or Eternal Yesterday BECAUSE at least high angst means no sound effects.

Also less likely to sing.

All hail dark BL's good side? The silver lining.

For the record and to show my "history of BL creds" I'm gonna give a shout out to the SINGLE best use of a sound effect in a BL-adjacent piece of media....

Tag game: List 10 of your comfort shows, then tag 10 people

I was tagged by @twig-tea thanks for the tag. Like you I'm having trouble narrowing it down so I cheated a little and some of this are grouped together.

Group One is the Detective group, I used to love detective stories, which means I watched a lot of cop shows, there are some that I can't watch anymore because of the new awarness of the copaganda but these are the ones that I still find comfort in: Cold Case, Elementary, Murder She Wrote, Columbo and Ris Roma (italian version of a CSI like show, this is the first and only spin-off which I like more)

Skam OG S3 and Eyewitness and Skam Italia s2. These I am not reaching for as much since I have BLs now. But they are still comfort shows. Skam Italian s2 in particular I reach when I want to feel better about the borderline semi-fascist hellstate I'm living in, since it's the best gay rep we italians got.

Animated Group: Animaniacs and Tiny Toons along with Looney Toons cartoons I use as background noise kind of shows. And along with the anime Kodomo No Omocha (Rossana in Italian) they remind me the most of childhood. Side note sometimes I listen to intro of Rossana anime and feel like a kid again, cartoon intro used to be a pretty big deal in Italian dub cartoons 80% of which were sanged by a single woman.

Old Sitcom Group: The Golden Girls, Boy Meets the World, Full House and The Nanny

Leverage (not the new seasons, I don't really like them, just the old ones)

Living Single

Superstore

The BL Group (the most recent and the one that I am now leaning to most of all): Until We Meet Again, Be Loved In House I Do, History 2 Right or Wrong, Semantic Error and My School President are the ones that bring me the most comfort.

This is mega cheating because they are not really show as in tv series. But they always bring me the most consistent comfort: Assorted Musicals and Theather Live Recordings. In particular = The Sound of Music, West Side Story 2021, Moulin Rouge, Les Misarable 25th concert, Into the Woods (the 90s recording), Much Ado About Nothing (the 2011 recording with David Tennant), Cats and an italian one Notre Dame De Paris an Italian-French Musical based on the Victor Hugo book not realted to the Disney version at all)

Bonus: the ones that are no longer comfort shows because I can never watch them again: CSI (all of them but I used to love NY), Law and Order, and Veronica Mars (which I haven't been able to watch since I saw s4)

And the ones that didn't make the list: My favorite Power Rangers series (they range from Lost Galaxy to RPM)

Every time I post an old list I always think - damn, that looks good! I ought to rewatch that!

Especially the partial ones (like today's) - writing up the posts makes me want to rewatch & complete the list!

But I don't have time to rewatch everything 😭 .. I'm barely keeping up with the new shows - I'm falling behind! 😭😭

Sorry there hasn't been many new new lists recently - or that most of them have been BL's, that's not completely on purpose, it's just that they're shorter and easier to finish ...

I tend to hyperfixate ... & crocheting has taken a lot of my attention recently .. & I don't have the skill to read subtitles and crochet at the same time 😅 (when I'm crocheting I watch stuff that doesn't need a lot of - or any - attention .. let's plays on youtube, or silly cartoons like Futurama .. just for background noise really)

I'm still making lists for new shows!! ... they may just take longer, or may not be posted that quickly after the show finishes

fun fact - when I was learning to crochet a few years ago I burned through the entire Schitt's Creek series as my "background noise"

Hey, stranger 😘 3 and 12 for the end-of-year asks

3. Favorite musical artist / group you started listening to this year? Taemin. I have listened to the same few artists for years, so imagine my surprise when he got me invested.

12. Talk about a new friend you made this year. Mmm, it’s not actually a friend I’ve made this year, but we got real close a few months ago. I thought she was that kind of confident, bubbly person who’s always talking and making noise, but she’s actually insecure, very attentive. You could talk about anything without feeling judged. She’s really sweet and kind. (She’s also the biggest simp, I would have never imagined that).

oikawa def listens to indie music just bc he wants to feel unique and the 'iM diFfErENt fRoM oTHeR gUrLs' vibes

i FIRMLY BELIEVE IWAIZUMI HAJIME IS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO CHOMPS ON HIS ICE CREAM BC HE LIKES TO FEEL THE COLD ON HIS TEETH AKSJSKSKSK

meanwhile kunimi eats a kitkat like its pizza just CHOMP

makki caNNOT sleep without a pillow between his thighs LIKE LISTEN he has 2 sisters and they all told him its so comfortable and at first he was like,, ??,, then he tried and now cant sleep without it

bUT MATTSUN LIKES TO SLEEP WITH PILLOWS SURROUNDING HIM bc it makes him feel safe and like there are two body pillows on either side of him and hes kinda trapped in the middle aksjskdk

when kyo was younger, he was really short and although he had other pants, he loved this one pair but they were really long on him and he wore it all the time and the part of the pants that touched the ground is torn in shreds

kindaichi steps on the sofa before sitting LIKE puts one foot on the cushion then the other until hes literally standing on the couch before folding to sit with his knees up to his chest (i do this)

watari sniffs his food before eating it no matter if its something he eats all the time or something new, he still sniffs it either way

yahaba is really particular with his feet and he likes to get a really big tupperware (duh one only meant for his feet) and fill it up with warm almost boiling water and he just soaks them

oikawa has sleep paralysis and he oftens hallucinates about aliens in the corner of his room

kunimi does this thing where he makes weird noises with his mouth like sounds of his mouth opening LIKE when youre tastinf something new and you do that sound with your tongue (I DUNNO HOW TO DESCRIBE IT AJDKSKKD)

makki bends his knees just to crack his ankles

iwa sneezes a ton but he has those sneezes where theyre quiet that you dont even notice or really loudly that it just echoes throughout the gym

kyo sleeps with one sock on bc his feet gets cold easily but both socks make him feel really hot so only one sock is perfect

for a tall and hunk of a guy, mattsun is a very light walker like his footsteps are very light and if he wants to, it can be practically silent

watari actually hates vegetables ajssksksk he particularly hates zucchini, eggplants, any vegetables that are that shape

kindaichi likes to stick or lean against walls because to him, they feel cold and can decrease his body heat

oikawa stands and places his feet at V position like \/ instead of ll because his sister did ballet and he was taught that was the right way of standing and it was considered graceful

yahaba has a fear of cactuses

mattsun does so badly in the heat because his body temp runs so high and the hot surroundings make him feel so uncomfortable and so he takes a lot of cold showers

iwa cannot swim like he freaks out immediately when his toetips can no longer feel the bottom and he panics with thoughts of drowning

watari has really small feet that he still buys big kids shoes to save money

kyotani considered playing baseball because he thought baseball bats were cool but he got angry and threw tantrum after missing his first pitch

iwa chomps on a whole raw chili while eating ramen akskksks

oikawa actually hates sweets bc when he was younger, he had cavities and iwa showed him a cartoon of cavities eating his teeth and will make him toothless

kindaichi really really likes hugs but hes too awkward to ask them even from his parents

yahaba chomps on mints so he goes through boxes of them in a week

i feel like theres a boy in the team who doesnt brush their teeth everyday and rubs a towel on their teeth to make it look clean and take mints to hide their bad breath

iwaizumi is actually iron deficient so he bruises super super fast and he even developed iron defiency anemia when he was younger bc his parents didnt catch on which caused him to be put on strong medication for months and still takes it now

WAIT,, OIKAWA IS LACTOSE INTOLERANT BUT HE LIKES MILK SO HE EATS MILK BREAD TO MAKE HIM FEEL NOT SO BAD OR GUILTY OF CONSUMING STRAIGHT DAIRY

seijoh four bonding time is watching gordom ramsey shows and yelling and screaming 'YEA! EXACTLY!' as if theyre also cooking genuises

watari used to eat grapes all the time until his mom got worried and told him if he doesnt stop, he will eventually turn into one. he only eats it every few weeks

when he was younger, kunimi cried because he had befriended a chicken on a trip to a farm and his mom took him to eat fried chicken after and he thought it was Chicky (his chicken friend :"))

kyotani used to stick out his tongue when it was raining so he could taste the raindrops. they taste better than bottled water

one time, during a seijoh sleepover, they dared oikawa to wear his sisters old uniform, skirt and all, and it backfired so everyone turned red and couldnt look at him in the face

their pregame ritual is touching each other's shoe tips

they tried doing yoga at yahaba's house before by watching yoga youtube videos but everyone ended up having to go to the chiropractor after (how did makki even turn into the human pretzel?)

the local gym gets so scared when they see the team coming through the doors bc these men are so LOUD like they HYPE EACH OTHER UP SO MUCH THEYRE SO ANNOYING AKSKSKDK

also never take them to an all you can eat sushi place. if you do, bring them earlier of the day like 30 mins after opening time so the cooks can cook enough for them without running out of ingredients (even then sometimes they still run out)

oikawa used to eat his mom's roses from her garden because he thought it would make his farts smell good like roses

takahiro is a surprisingly good artist like he draws really cool action fighting scenes in the corner of his papers and stuff

in my work: it's canon that iwa is half filo and his nanay used to dress him up in a barong all the time during halloween bc she wanted him to showcase his heritage

yahaba drinks a lot of milk because he hopes to one day grow strong and bulky like the 3rd years instead of being seen as a pretty boy

kindaichi's mom is a hairstylist and she always scolds him for using a lot of gel bc she's always the one who washes his hair

makki never learned how to do taxes and hes had the government knocking on his door a handful of times (BOKUTO AKKDJSKKS)

kyo has a dog: a chiweenie

there's someone on the team who wears those socks with individual pockets for toes

their pinterest is so different from what they look like for example, mattsun has a board of different flower decorations and arrangements

kunimi throws up during intense horror movies

watari's celeb crush is emma watson

the team alternates from different music genres like from ateez and bts to mxmtoon and beach bunny

they still dont know how to pronounce camila cabello's name

theyre all active in social media but only oikawa is on it 24/7 and in all platforms while the others have insta and snap

mattsun has twins as little siblings and he used to get them mixed up all the time that he used to draw a sharpie dot on the girl's forehead to determine she was his sister

watari hates sitting on the floor bc his butt bone hurts really easily so he can only sit on cushions for long periods of time

the team was supposed to have a party but everyone didnt know what to bring so they proved they shared the same braincell by bringing the same thing: a box of pizza

makki's an old soul and prefers to play records on a record player or watch old movies

kyo is surprisingly good at giving massages because he really pushed hard on those tense muscles

kindaichi knows how to crack necks so everyone goes to him a lot to do it (a friend of mine does this and can i say its terrifying yet so good?)

the only one who has a license is matsukawa and thats because granny needs to go to the doctor a lot and he hates her walking by herself and cabs are expensive

kyotani and yahaba are actually,,, lowkey close,,, not like best friends but theyre nice to each other and they got a stick and poke together (yahaba's was: :) while kyo's was: >:))

watari has a collection of mangas (some bl maybe 👀)

WARNING SAD: mattsun’s future job is a funeral person right? he ends up taking care of granny’s funeral free of charge and he had to take a week off because it was really painful for him

oikawa learned spanish SUPER fast to the point he forgets japanese sometimes but there are moments where he forgets both languages and hes just,,,, ???

makki’s unemployed yea but he rooms with mattsun in exchange of cooking because makki’s surprisingly good at cooking

iwa is practically the nutritionist of the team because he knows everything about proteins, carbs, iron, and needed vitamins so they all go to him to know what to eat and what they need

kunimi has lots and lots of shoes but usually only wears 2

kindaichi has a habit of pretending hes chewing gum even though he doesnt have gum, his mouth just chomps and moves with air akasldfjkf

there was a clown phenomenon in america but in their city, they had a mascots and seijoh 4 went around scaring kids :”(

oikawa never manspreads he gets too insecure to spread out like that akdjfkd

kyotani can easily sleep anywhere like he would be standing and just fall asleep or he sleeps with his eyes open

yahaba’s parents own a restaurant somewhere in the city and he works there sometimes

Having Psychosis during Halloween

Having psychosis during the fall means having to face lots of spooky stuff. I don't speak for everyone, but Halloween is a very tough time of year for me. Horror movies, trailers, decorations, and even pranks are pulled out for my favorite time of year. So here are some helpful hints that I use to keep myself happy, safe, and spooky! 🕸Stay away from things that may trigger you, no matter how small. Do not underestimate yourself. Even watching or reading something slightly spooky, when you know this is harmful, can bring up bad memories or start an episode. 🕸Install a 'spoiler block' on your laptop or computer. They can go by many names, but these apps block out keywords on all sites. Some can be more general, like topics instead of words. 🕸If you're sensing that a jump scare is about to happen on what you're watching, and can't get out of the situation or want to continue watching, wiggle your toes, fingers, and chatter your teeth. This is what I do and it prevents me from jumping or flinching, which stops chest pain and episodes. 🕸Go to kid friendly parties! As a teen who cannot see bloody or gore-associated costumes, I go to family/all ages parties where costumes are all kid friendly! 🕸Watch kid friendly movies! It's hard to not watch Halloween movies, but don't expose yourself to horror if you can't handle it! Movies like Beetlejuice, Hocus Pocus, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Halloweentown are lightly spooky. 🕸This might be just me, but I can convince myself that I have 'immunity' to any bad stuff or danger (not all dangers, if that makes sense, but dangers as in my delusions and such) if I give myself a good luck charm or simply write "SAFETY CHARM" on a post-it and carry it around! 🕸Decorate with simple stuff! Some decorations might include bl**d, b*gs, and other horror stuff. Stick to simple things like orange/white lights, cartoon ghosts/pumpkins/bats, wolves/cats, and witch hats! Overall, keep things cartoony and basic! Or, even better, just get fall decorations, like leaves, scarecrows, and pumpkins!! 🕸STAY AWAY FROM HAUNTED HOUSES! I cannot stress this enough. No matter what symptoms you have of psychosis, a haunted house plays on them ALL. Voices/noises, jump scares, touch (some cannot touch you, but some can!), and even hallucinations (people running and hiding, so you may think it's a hallucination, or you could see things in the dark) 🕸Go trick-or-treating in a kid oriented part of town! You'll see fun decorations, cute costumes, and won't be scared! Or go to a kid friendly party and have fun there! 🕸Participate in non-spooky fun! Bake spooky/fall themed foods, craft, make your own costume, and carve pumpkins!! 🕸Overall, know your limits and DON'T push them! Test your limit during a different season. Have fun, stay spooky, and enjoy your fall, everyone!

BORIS MY PUPPY BOI

He’s almost always hungry, and loves to snack on just about anything (as long as it’s food)

Despite seeming to be an antagonist in the cartoons, he’s actually bendy’s best friend!!!

They still like to play tricks on each other tho. It’s just more lighthearted than mean spirited

He has a tail bc frick canon and it wags a lot when he’s happy or excited

He doesn’t talk much. If he does, he sounds like goofy. If he doesn’t, he’s making wolf noises (Ex: barking, growling, etc)

He likes to be scratched behind the ears!!!

He looooves playing the clarinet, and dreams of being in a band to play with someday

Literally acts like an overgrown puppy most of the time

If u tick him off, tho, u will find his bite is worse than his bark. But it’s rlly hard to actually push him to that point

He’s a good boy

What about the comic sound effects and bits of incidental music seemingly shared across the industry ? Example: tip-toe solo bassoon ditty. Cuckoo clock call. Boinnng ! Raspberry blat. Funny stretching noise. Bird chirp. Others include assorted sirens, cymbal crashes, ah-ooga car horns, drum paraddidles and slide whistle interjections—audible comic punctuation of the sort one expects from an animated cartoon or a Benny Hill episode ?

Feb 2024 Wk 4

Ongoing Series - Thai

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 12fin - Everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun in the fight sequences. I’m very happy for them. I’m not surprised they shot Khem and Chart. A little shocked it wasn’t also Yai, TBH.

I found this final episode rushed. According to rumors, The Sign was originally slated to be 14 eps, and it probably should’ve been. And I don’t say that often about Thai BL. But we all knew it was getting too bloated for its britches, so I'm not surprised they fumbled the ending. For me personally, it just wasn't that bad. It was fine and I was fine with it.

Tho, Billy does not look good with facial fur, messes up those gorgeous angles.

I was ultimately amused that the solution to the mythology thread was simply to talk to the river god and persuaded him to give up... off screen. It felt very old school wuxia. Or like Aeschylus or something. I did adore the stinger, Saint was basically like “I want wings too”.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, PNR, fated mates, police procedural, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and slasher. It’s the king of genre mash-up chaos. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it. Was it a crazy unhinged mess +1 roll for damage? Yes. Yes it was. Did it manage to hold all those tangled threads together? No it did not. Was it also a charming, sexy, engaging, non-stop piece of entertainment? Sure thing. I think this show is basically my KinnPorsche, and frankly I’ve been chasing that dragon naga since KP aired. Is it perfect? No. But it was balls to the wall FUN and that gets a 9/10 from me.

I'm thinking of doing a full recap review (partly because I have so many great screen shots.)

Cherry Magic (Sat YouTube grey) ep 10-11 of 12 - Since this series is following the yaoi so closely, I knew these were the separation eps. (Also I knew with would be a soft non-doom ep 11, Japan rarerly does these.) I like that they used it to show improve communication and development in all relationships, but, frankly, TayNew are just best when they are TayNew together on screen. So yeah. Let’s keep them back together, please?

Meanwhile, TayNew gifted us a gorgeous loving sweet sex scene. Thanks OG for doing us a solid.

I wanna add, it sure is fun to see New play as soft and vulnerable character, I feel like he hasn’t done that since SOTUS.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 12fin - 1/3 of this is a sweet romance about a student doctor falling in love with a student chef, and the rest of it is utter dross. Look the OffGun bits were GREAT.. In fact, I think they’re better AS A PAIR in this show than in any of their other BLS. And I'm a hard sell on any OffGun being better than PickRome. Saying that, how can I review a show where I could only tolerate 1/3 of it? Because I didn’t like any other aspect of this show, no other pairs and no other plots. That gives me: 9/10 for the OffGun bits, 5/10 for everything else. Frankly it probably should be an 8 but I gotta go with my gut and it's upset about this so 7/10. Sorry boys. It’s GMMTV’s fault. Your heart was in this show, mine wasn’t.

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 4 of 12 - These two are so good at making heart eyes at each other. It’s ridiculous. They don’t need any cartoon images or noises. Moot crush but "I wanna flirt and court more" is so flipping awesome. I love this for them… and us.

1000 Years Old ep 2 of 12 - It’s very silly and we have been gifted with the dorkiest vampire ever. But... the smell thing makes me so happy. And I like that the vamp uses chan/nai or tan = v old fashioned. Nahlak. I love our ghost girl. Did you notice she wasn’t in the room with them but they left an empty chair for her? Also nahlak.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Perfect Propose (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 5 of 6 - Kai was pretty much just “you're a workaholic but I basically married you whether you like it or not.” SMOOCH. What can I say? I'm a sucker for this dynamic.

AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) ep 5 of 10 - How is this show so cute? How do they both love and hurt each other so much. They are both just scared of loosing each other. Gah.

Unknown (Taiwan Sat Youku YouTube) 1 of 12 eps - Youku dropped the first ep to their YouTube channel but I doubt we can expect that to continue. Still, it was nice to be able to watch it in a convenient way. I enjoyed it. But I am cautious about it. Of course this is possibly two of my favorite tropes of all time (stepbrothers or a variation + hyung romance). So I’m looking forward to the romantic thread, but from the gritty style, it feels a lot more like a Taiwanese short. Which means it could go very dark and may not end happy.

Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 7 of 10 - I just don’t know if the main couple should be a couple. But when they finally get around to talking to each other, they sure are lovely. Also how great is it to see a uke initiate a kiss? Even if it’s not a very good kiss.

My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 2 of 8 - I am still not sure about this one. I am not contesting its quality, just saying it’s not for me. Also I’m not wild about what amounts to basically a redo of everything that already happened in the first episode from a different perspective. I know it’s a tall order with Japan, but I would like (when it’s a short series) for each new installment to actually move the plot (such as it is) along in someway. Am I asking too much?

Playboyy (Thurs Gaga) 14 eps - Dear Playboyy, it's not you, it’s me… I hate you. You’re about as deep (and as palatable) as a shot glass of cum. While I'm sure you’re someone’s kink, you're my weakest link. Goodbye. I DNFed this at ep 5. Frankly I'm impressed with myself for getting that far. Ends next week TF.

A Secretly Love (Thai WeTV) - I tried but I can't get into my WeTV account anymore and I'm way too lazy to figure it out. Should I bother to go grey for it?

THAI BL MASTER POST

So this is a master post about Thai BL. It’s long. I’ve divided it into parts. Skip to the bits you’re intersted in.

Am I an agent of trust? At the top I talk about why, or why not, you might want to believe my opinions and how my taste was formed.

What to watch? In the middle there’s recommended watch lists/orders.

What else to know? At the bottom there’s links to other posts I’ve done on the subject of Thai BL.

My experience with the genre:

I’ve been watching BL since 2017. SOTUS was my first, then Love Sick, then mostly what was on YouTube. During lockdown I decided to try to watch every BL Thailand has ever made. I went back to 2007′s Love of Siam, and to date I’ve watched over 130 Thai BLs.

My education/career is in social science, pop culture analysis, market research, literary and film criticism, and I currently work in the entertainment industry. I’m a touch OCD. I keep a spreadsheet of all BLs I’ve watched with ratings (about 350 total), and I also use My Drama List. I started with Thai BL but I now also watch anything I can get from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

I come to BL as a reader of Japanese yaoi, mostly the stuff translated into English from 1997-2007. I also watched many of the first North American and British queer romances and romcoms at about the same time. I don’t consume much anime or European cinema.

My Taste & What I Lean Towards Recommending

What I like about Thai BL is that is has longer series (focused on story and character development), is very pretty, and tends to stick to the lighter end of the spectrum with happy endings. It rarely gets too serious and usually has comedic elements.

What should you be warned about? Production values can be low and the filming techniques are pretty basic. There are usually sound issues: from cartoon noises to bad looping to poor recording to terrible music choices. Makeup and wardrobe is subpar. Acting can be overwrought and awkward including the chemistry between couples.

What I don’t like about Thai BL is that it uses problematic tropes: gay for you, dubious consent, punch down humor, stalker/obsession, heterosexual dysmorphia, vilification of femme and other visual queers, sex negativity, and lack of healthy female representation. It’s starting to correct for some of these issues though, slowly but surely.

When I rate a show highly it's often because it has fewer flaws as compared to other Thai BLs, not because it's necessarily better acted, filmed, directed, or has a fab story. Although I can’t help taking those elements into account.

Basics of Thai BL

BL: stands for Boy’s Love. All Asian BL can trace its roots to the Japanese yaoi tradition which spread during the 1990s. The first BLs depicted on screen were in Japan and were called live action yaoi. BL comes in both dark (depressing) and light (upbeat) variants, but Thai BL leans light. In Thailand, prior to the rise of BL dramas, there were Y-novels (books featuring a gay romance mostly written by and for straight women) and some translated yaoi manga. The Thai language uses the term “serie Y” to refer to these narratives.

Thai BL can be divided into two types:

Regular Thai BL: good stuff, generally better acted, higher quality. It is sourced in 2016′s SOTUS and usually has a university setting.

The Thai BL pulps: poorer all around, very low production values, messy plot, cheaply made and churned out, usually high school set. It is sourced in 2014′s Love Sick. (More on the pulps here.)

Most Thai BL has a university or high school setting (it’s cheaper), but lately (2021 on) they have been branching out, which fandom is excited about.

Any given Thai BL is either an original (somewhat improvised) script or based on a Thai y-novel. Generally the second style has better story and end product than the first. Thai BL doesn’t cinematographically reference yaoi as much as other BL.

Thai BL series tend to run longer than BL shows from other countries with 8-15 episodes of 40 minutes each. They almost always have happy endings. In order to satisfy this market expectation, Thailand is more likely to green light second seasons and spin off specials than other countries.

Insider Trading Lingo

Seme/uke & tsundere: The terms are Japanese, and these archetypes come from yaoi manga.

Seme = active pursuer or romantic aggressor/dominant.

Uke = passive pursued or romantic receiver/submissive.

It doesn't necessarily correlate to personality, sexual preference, or physical desire. Generally, in Thai BL seme/uke DOES conform to a heterosexually dysmorphic imposition where the seme is inappropriately conflated with boy/top/pitcher, and the uke with girl/bottom/catcher. In other words, Thai BL does not believe in gay without imposing heterosexual rolls onto that gayness. They also fetishize a height difference. (If you want to avoid this here’s a list of BL that has no established seme/uke. Here’s a post where I talk about how the different countries treat uke/seme in their BL narratives and why uke/seme ≠ top/bottom.)

Tsundere = a character that appears prickly/angry/grumpy at first but softens as the story progresses. (Can be the seme or the uke character.)

Gay For You AKA If It’s You, It’s Okay, the character isn’t “actually” gay he’s just into this one person. There are a ton of issues with (and damage done to the queer community by) the Gay for You trope not the least of which is bisexual erasure. You can read stuff about this from:

High heat: term from the romance genre that means the characters do more than just kiss. A series can qualify as high heat (e.g. Why R U?) or a pair can be classified as high heat, in that the actors are good at portraying that level of physical chemistry (e.g. MaxTul). (This can also be extended to countries, Taiwan leans towards high heat while Korea does not.) Thai pulps, anything set in high school, and GMMTV tend to avoid high heat. I talk about high heat versus high angst from a film and narrative perspective in BL in this post.

HEA: Happy ever after. The series ends with the main couple in an act of unity (kiss, sex, engagement, wedding, domestic bliss) that implies they will continue that way.

Thai BL Specific Lingo & Knowledge

Visual code or signal markers of gayness in Thai BL: an engineering smock, the gear symbol, (both from SOTUS), pink milk, a clear umbrella, (both from 2 Moons novel), black & white horizontal stripes, and the little yellow backpack.

FEAR EPISODE 11: In 12/13 ep arcs a breakup/drama/DOOM usually falls during episode 11, so we fans fear emotional suffering when an episode 11 is coming.

Faen fatale: my term for a femme fatale archetype in BL. Faen is the Thai word for boyfriend/girlfriend. Thai BL often has an ex/wannabe lover turn up as a plot device.

The 2 Moons curse: 2 Moons is the most popular y-novel amongst Thai readers of the genre, yet adaptations to screen have been plagued with issues. Both the first and second seasons experienced controversy, including accusations of bullying and cast members quitting. Rumor is Call it What You Want is an exposé of the behind the scenes of 2 Moons 2.

Other weird things to know:

In Thai BL no character locks or plugs in his phone or respects posting privacy.

Doctors discuss medical issues with anyone in the room.

Going out in the rain can make a cute boy sick.

Friends are UP in his business.

Parents are mostly not present or plot devices.

There’s a lot of awkward product placement.

10 Thai BL Fun Facts

Thai BL Production Industry & Actors

Trailers are not trailers: Thai BL production houses will release teaser trailers in order to raise money to fund the project. So we get a trailer but it’s rarely exactly like the end result. Also there are trailers out there for BL series that never got green-lit or are stuck in dev hell. Like soap operas, they are sometimes still filming as the first episodes air.

Actor pairs or BL couples: sets of actors will be cast in different stories, as different characters, but always as the same pairing. i.e. These boys don’t mind kissing each other. Pairs will also be used together for product advertisements, as variety show cohosts, in magazine spreads & look-books & modeling campaigns/catwalks, and for OST & fan-meets & concerts. GMMTV piloted the concept with Singto & Krist after SOTUS took off. Couples have fandoms, special names, and hashtags - almost like K-pop groups. Some actors will pair up prior to getting a series and audition as a couple (SantaEarth), others will form as side dishes (bit parts) and then grow so popular they get their own series or advertising campaigns (OffGun, MaxTul, JeffGameplay, YinWar, BounPrem).

This kind of co-branding of coupledom can become the primary way the 2 actors earn money. However, perforative gayness on talk/variety shows (in particular) smacks of queerbaiting. Pairs often end up dealing with crazy fans, skinship obsession, stalker behavior, mismanaged expectations, and more: e.g. the good (MaxTul), the what? (MewGulf), the ugly (PerthSaint). I suggest avoiding this cesspit if you can. These are actors. They are acting. End of discussion.

GMMTV (the maker of SOTUS) is Thailand’s biggest studio that consistently churns out higher production value BLs and puts them on YouTube with subs for an international audience. Thus their BLs tend to be best known. They keep a stable of actors, old 1930s Hollywood style, and use them in advertising and as hosts/guests on talk shows, gameshows, variety shows, travel/food shows, and other non-BL dramas. GMMTV’s pairs include SingtoKrist (no more), OffGun, TayNew, FrankDrake, PluemChimon & BrightWin. The short series Our Skyy showcases some of their pairs. Studio Wabi Sabi & Starhunter are smaller but popular BL studios that follow in GMMTV’s footsteps by keeping a stable of actors (encouraged to do other activities) often paired up for BL. Wabi Sabi produced higher quality shows like Until We Meet Again. Their pairs include OhmFluke & BounPrem. While Starhunter is a bit more pulp-ish with shows like Gen Y and pairs like KimCop.

Directors you’ll hear fans talk about:

Backaof who mostly directs for GMMTV and is pretty sophisticated.

New directs a lot and for several studios and has a very workmanlike approach.

Cheewin who mostly directs for indie houses and has a very candy-colored, comedic, and erratic style. Some pairs he reuses include BoomPeak, YoonLay, & MaxNat.

Pairs relatively independent of studio or director (now) include: MaxTul, BothNewyear, YinWar, KaownahTurbo, JeffGameplay, JimmyTommy, and PerthLay. Broadly speaking, pairs that self govern and self promote (or have moved into that) tend to make for healthier brands than those controlled by studios and are less likely to turn toxic.

MAME: the author of Love By Chance, A Chance at Love, and TharnType among other Thai Y-novels. She’s a popular writer (now producer) in Thailand but her style and choice of tropes is extremely controversial with international audiences, (she includes a lot of statutory rape, dubious consent, and intra-couple violence). However, her characters are appealing and her casting choices tend to be strong. Some of her origin actor pairs include: MewGulf, JaFirst, and MawinRun.

If you like Love Sick you’ll be compelled to watch Love Sick 2, and it’s LONG so you’ve been warned. Responsible for the pulps. On Netflix or on YouTube (watch the BL fan cuts if you can).

SOTUS - Thailand’s first global hit, responsible for Thai BL becoming the soft power it is today, also caused the engineering is gay, pink milk, and gears tropes. (You’ll enjoy SOTUS S, the follow up, only if you loved SOTUS.) On Netflix.

Make it Right - the first Thai BL pulp, if you liked Love Sick you’ll probably like MIR. If not, you should skip it and the pulps in general. On YouTube.

Love By Chance - first MAME offering with the least offensive main couple, but watch out for those side couples they’re trouble (trigger warning on KlaTechno for rape). On YouTube.

Kiss Me Again: PeteKao cut from GMMTV (Dark Blue Kiss is their main series, watch it if you like TayNew’s dynamic & chemistry in Kiss’s BL cut, otherwise don’t bother). On YouTube.

2 Moons 2 - slightly better than 2 Moons and covers the same territory but with more developed side couples. Watch it to understand the origin of J9, why everyone loves Pavel, and where the pink milk and umbrella tropes come from. On YouTube.

Until We Meet Again - Thailand applies complex story structure to a BL foundation with a killer outcome. (This is my favorite Thai BL). Trigger warning for the original version of trigger. On YouTube.

TharnType - some of the most problematic tropes with some of the best chemistry. MewGulf broke the internet and caused other people to notice BL, and everyone still talks about it & them. Watch this to learn why and about all the issues that followed. Trigger warnings for statutory rape & child abuse. On Viki.

Why R U? - if you like TharnType (or couldn’t face it because of triggers) this is a much less problematic take on high heat, with a great soft boi side couple. The story is pants but it’s worth trying to track down for chemistry reasons, and because FighterTutor rep both safe sex and verse. Hard to find.

2gether - the fluffiest BL that everyone knows about, watch this to see the pinnacle of GMMTV’s style and Thailand’s most ubiquitous BL. On YouTube.

My Engineer - first major non-pulp classic Thai BL with multiple pairs, from a minor studio. On YouTube.

Second Chance - Thailand’s current reigning champion of the pulps but if you want to know what a Thai BL pulp is, it’s this, this is what it is. On Viki.

Ingredients - BL as a story advertisement with a weak seme/uke dynamic and a great soft indie pair in peak domesticity. Extremely comforting and remarkably innovative for Thailand. Shares certain stylistic trends with Vietnamese and Pinoy BL. On YouTube.

I Told The Sunset About You - first well regarded widely watched high cinema BL. Uses a traditional coming of age narrative, shares some stylistic trends with Japanese BL. Hard to find. (I talk about my challenges with this show here.)

A Tale of Thousand Stars - first high cinema BL from GMMTV trying to grow up a bit, long form but it shares certain stylist trends with Korean BL. On YouTube.

Manner of Death - BL tries on gay romantic suspense using wildly popular BL pair MaxTul. Tumblr went mad for this one. Shares certain stylistic trends with Taiwanese BL. Hard to find.

Lovely Writer - Thai BL gets meta with self criticism but using a strong story and great acting. On YouTube.

WATCH LIST: The Best Thai BL

This is a tasting menu of Thai BL.

These are the ones I think best represent what Thai BL has to offer. Including some of the most popular, that people seem to enjoy the most. These tend to be the ones that western audiences find the least offensive.

Until We Meet Again (2019) - a non BL trope reliant fated mates romance

1000 Stars (2021) - strong story concept that nods at BL tropes but manages to elevate them and itself

He’s Coming to Me (2019) - boy and ghost boy fall in love, must solve ghost’s murder

Oxygen the series (2020) - uses every Thai BL trope in the playbook for one of the gentlest BLs ever made, bit slow for some

Love By Chance (2018) - AePete are a model new BL couple, softly subversive of the seme/uke dynamic, sweet, kind, and low angst. All the other pairs (TinCan, KlaNo, and TumTar) are old school dysfunctional yaoi couples thrust into a modern narrative.

Love Sick (2014) - has very few traditional yaoi tropes, but it started several BL tropes of its own, that Thailand now perpetuates.

SOTUS (2016) - All the Thai BLs that followed owe their existence to this series.

2gether (2020) - if Love Sick started it and SOTUS pushed it forward, 2g made Thai BL a phenomenon.

TharnType (2019) - if 2gether reps for the new BL, Tharntype is the last gasp at traditional yaoi issues.

Bad Buddy (2022) - reigning king of Bl based largely on the killer chemistry and actng of the leads in a Romeo & Romeo romance

I’m not a linguist but I love the interrelationship between language and culture. There are many things we miss about BLs when we watch them in translation. I started to study Thai in order to understand some of this. These are posts that tunnel into elements we miss as outsiders to Thai culture.

THAI NAMES & MISSPELLINGS

Thai actors and characters use a nickname (chue len) that can seem really odd to English speakers. Unlike many other Asian languages Thai names are written and spoken as we do in English: (Nickname +) Given Name + Family Name. Names are coupled with honorifics for spoken address, which are based on social status and age dynamics.

Thai is a syllabic alphabet, so Thai words and names can be spelled multiple ways in English. Thus there are some characters known by multiple names (because different subbers transcribed differently), for example Med/Mes and Than/Thun in He’s Coming to Me, or Aeoy/Aey in Lovely Writer.

WIERD TITLES

The Thai language contains no articles, so titles get dropped articles in translation. Hence A Tale of Thousand Stars (missing a) and I Told Sunset About You (missing the).

PRONOUNS & GENDER

Thai spoken pronouns mostly gender in first and second (I/you) but not in third (she/he/they). Also nouns often do not confer gender (there is no boyfriend/girlfriend only faen). Also names are often used in place of I/you. In other words, you say your own name, and (honorific +) other people’s names A LOT. Formal polite particles (krap/kha) are gendered, informal polite particles are not.

THE WAI

The wai, or formal acknowledgment, consists of a slight bow of the head, with the palms pressed together and raised towards the face. The words sawat di are often spoken with the wai followed by the krub/ka polite particle. Here’s Perth Nakhun (Ram from My Engineer) explaining sawat di.

LOVELY WRITER

Foundational Romance Tropes? Enemies to lovers + forced proximity + LTP (long term pining)

Lovely Writer is about a y-novelist who is dragged onto the set of his first BL adaptation. The lead actor of the series starts flirting with him and they fall in love.

The chemistry was great and the acting solid. It launched as a fun show, light hearted for all it poked at the BL industry. What it did beautifully (like Oxygen) was correct for some of BL’s fatal flaws. There were no consent issues, cutout characters, or gay for you. Even the family coming out sequence was honest and fairly dealt with. Yet it still managed to hit most of the Thai BL tropes I have come to expect and even a few yaoi ones I love.

This series confronted issues within the BL industry: depictions of non-consent; catering to market pressure; forcing actors to performatively flirt and hide existing relationships; product placement; fan obsession and stalker behavior; and the complacency of studios, agents, and directors in all of the above.

It ended up being one of my favorites of 2021 (only the finale was a bit drawn out for my tastes) but it suffered from one fatal flaw - egregious sound effects, overused and CONSTANTLY applied cartoon noises particularly in the first half. I found it so distracting I docked a whole point for it. Also I wonder if non-BL watchers will understand this show at all.

Still, for me this was one of the best BLs from Thailand in 2021.

March 2021 Part 1

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.

Ongoing Series Thai

Lovely Writer Ep 2 - the sound engineer should be canned, otherwise, it’s good. Made me smile and also wince in embarrassment. I like the sinister underpinning Kao is bring to his role. Ended ep 2 on a nice kiss, pacing for the win. Reminds me a lot of early Japanese live action yaoi (AKA the first BL) but that could be the cartoon noises. However, if Gene gets a nosebleed... Also, lots of tropes: boyfriend claiming, domesticity, lip touch, and a whole discussion on language. (Which made me VERY happy.)

Brothers Ep 5 - my boys got a bit more screen time but it’s still rough going, definitely getting slightly better but it started real low so... basically I continue to watch so you don’t have too.

1000 Stars Ep 6 - solid episode, the tension is ramping up and it looks like we get forced proximity in the next episode so that’ll be fun.

Ongoing Series Not Thai

You Make Me Dance (Korea) Ep 3-4 - such a clever little show, a bit cold, but unbelievably strategic with its tropes, this one is SMART.

We Best Love 2 (Taiwan) Ep 1 - this show might actually kill me, partly because the tension is REAL (we can’t trust Taiwan to end anything properly). I can’t believe I’m putting myself through 6 episodes of this. But I already can’t wait for next week, so it’s doing its job. Gotta give them props for sheer GUT WRENCHING execution of a thin af narrative. Why Taiwan? WHY?!

Stand Alones

To My Star (movie version) - it’s on Vikki behind the paywall, clocking in at 2 hours that means they added at least 20 min of content. I haven’t seen it show up ripped yet, but I hope to have seen by next week.

Breaking News

Dear Uranus the first Taiwanese GL miniseries dropped a 60 sec trailer. A seriously unfortunate name and it’s Taiwan so we can’t expect a happy ending but we can expect good kisses. Starts March 14 premiering on 兔女狼 Rabbit & Wolf’s Youtube Channel.

Feb 2021 Part 4

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.

Ongoing Series Thai

Manner of Death Ep 14 fin - the ending was a thing of beauty and a joy forever. They rewarded their BL fandom with 3 precious gifts: rings, rice cakes, and a motorcycle ride. We honestly couldn’t have asked for anything more from a show that’s not actually BL.

Brothers Ep 4 - what is going on? Do I care? Do we care? The dessert side dishes are lovely but there’s just not enough blueberry cheesecake. But then that’s kind of an existential question, is there ever enough blueberry cheesecake?

1000 Stars Ep 5 - oh it’s great, Mix is turning in a flipping awesome performance. If you’re not watching it, you’re hopeless. What better use of your time could there possibly be?

Lovely Writer 1 - it begins! It’s a pouty-lips-off with way too many sound effects. (Put down the cartoon noises, Thailand, and back away slowly, you abuse your power. Has Japan TAUGHT YOU NOTHING?) I enjoyed its little jabs at the BL industry, they’re cute. *pat pat pat* I hope Gene isn’t too tsundere to be likable. It’s a fine line to tread with an introvert main character. Pacing is good (as I have come to expect from Thai BL). All in all... it’s fine, serviceable. I like it. I may grow to love it.

Ongoing Series Not Thai

You Are Ma Boy Ep 6 fin (Vietnam) - YAMB returned and finished up in one sweet little episode. They hit a bunch of tropes, and delivered a satisfying ending. All-in-all a pleasing little show. You should watch it, everything (including the subs) gets better as it goes along.

We Best Love dropped a special episode with some extended content from the bar scene and new scenes from the trip apart and the reason for the break up. So yeah, best to watch it before season 2. Although they might provide these bits as flashbacks for season 2 as well. Warning, it hurts.

You Make Me Dance Ep 1-2 (Korea) - eeep! So cute. I love a BL that uses dance and it added some unexpected romance tropes: fated mates, grumpy/sunshine, and a mafia/enforcer for the love interest. Also unexpectedly funny. Smart of them, with a dancer on the payroll, to have him do physical humor. (Also so many BL visual tropes: hand touch, pinky promise, rooftop assignation).

Gossip

Tell The World I Love You (Thai movie) was set to air this Thursday and... didn’t? Rumors are it’s getting a theatrical release in Thailand on April 6 now - contingent on C19 sitch of course.
