Ares saying he hates his own kids and the worst day of the year is when they visit him makes my heart break for Clarisse more. Clarisse fights so hard for scraps of her father’s attention and Ares sees her as just another nuisance. He doesn’t care about her unless she’s able to serve him. But Clarisse (like Annabeth) thinks she just has to work harder for him to love her. In her mind, it’s all her fault. Which is why she is so angry when little punk Percy strolls in at twelve years old, no training and unclaimed, and immediately defeats the minotaur. In three days hes already got the gods attention and his father claimed him. Of course she’s angry.

luke and percy parallels >>>
The only reason percy wasn’t like luke was because luke existed.
percy saw what luke did to everyone around him and immediately knew that it was wrong. he agreed with him, but not with the way he was doing it. that’s the whole point. then, after luke had betrayed his friends, percy was done with him, because loyalty, right? it’s his thing. but was he? i reread the last olympian recently and every interaction with “luke” consisted of percy feeling conflicted about fighting his friend.
it only made sense for a character like luke to be in this story. what would percy be without him?

There was a thunderstorm where we live, and I was thinking of the Wachowski boys the whole time. Knux is likely to be hit by lightning.

back on my usual shit. Tormenting the one I love. A lidl fanfic snippet beneath cut hehehe (a convo between Gilbert and Roderich on the topic of Germany)
[Somewhere in Continental Europe, 1870]
“You can’t be serious about raising him on your own,” Roderich spits acid, “You have no experience or qualifications outside of war, let me do it.”
“If I can manage an army of men, I believe I’m capable of caring for one child.”
“Children are not trained men, Gilbert.”
“You’re the last person I want to be lectured by on this,” Gilbert cuts in and adjusts his position in the chair. “I mean no offence, Roderich, but I rather have Feliciano beneath me than beside me.”
Roderich makes a strangled sound and opens his mouth to retort that Feliciano is perfectly well-adjusted when Gilbert continues.
“Don’t get me wrong, I don’t doubt your efficiency in raising regular children. You could turn a stuttering fool into a credentialed politician and a tone-deaf cripple to the most renowned pianist. You and your country have a culture that mine does not. Your understanding of music is something I couldn’t even dream of achieving, but what you lack is the ability to admire a well-oiled machine. I want Ludwig to not only be a force to be reckoned with within the political spectrum, I also want him unbeatable on the field. I want people terrified at the mere mention he’s coming… And that is nothing you can provide.”
Roderich nearly laughs at Gilbert’s delusion. The nation before him couldn’t seriously believe that Ludwig, a wiry and mutilated little thing, a walking blasphemy against God and Mother Nature herself, covered in sutures and wrapped in bandages that needed to be changed daily, was going to become anything but what he was created of, dead tissue. He searches Gilbert’s face for a trace of self-awareness and is horrified when he doesn’t find it.
“That– Ludwig won’t even survive that long,” Roderich manages to get out, quiet, angry, and small. He can’t help how his voice shakes and rises. He’s furious, but can’t say why, perhaps because he feels bad for the little thing Gilbert has created, so frail yet already carrying the weight of Gilbert’s expectations, he’s angry because he knows better and he doesn’t know how to make Gilbert understand that. “He’s blind and mute; incapable of even feeding or relieving himself despite his age. You haven’t created a machine, you haven’t even created a person, you’ve created a thing whose only purpose is to suffer a slow death.”
Gilbert’s mouth tightens and he drums an impatient finger against the chair’s armrest, “You’re underestimating him.”
“I’m realistic, one of us has to be. That thing is suffering every day,” Roderich begs. “It’s sadistic.”
Gilbert hits the armrest with his fist and Roderich reels back.
“Don’t call him that! He’s not a thing, he’s the future of Europe,” Gilbert sneers at him, all composure finally lost, “You sit here and speak as though he were to die any day now, yet you beg me to resign him to your care?” –Gilbert wrinkles his nose in disdain– “I can see why Feliciano turned out the way he did, you have no perseverance, no dignity or strength, giving Ludwig to you would be to cut his throat. You’ve never struggled in a way that matters, nothing worth having is easily attainable. Ludwig will be great.”
Roderich trembles with withheld fury and he curls his lips to match Gilbert’s crude sneer.
“Fine,” he spits, “If that thing makes it at all.”

There is something special about reading a book series and getting to the last book.
You've been with these characters for so long. Laughing with them, crying with them, seeing them grow up, witnessing their surroundings change.
And this is their final stand. This is what the previous books have been building up to. Most of the characters won't even make it to the next series. Maybe just as a thought. A regret. A lesson. But we will never see them again.
Then there is the main character. And how they finally know what they are doing. What they WANT to be doing. They were just a kid a few months ago but now they are fighting for their life. Their actions are more prepared, more thought out. They no longer possess naivety. They've grown. And their relationships have grown. And maybe they finally get together with the person they were meant to be with.
All of these and the book itself keeps referencing their past adventures. With every reference you remember exactly how you felt while you were reading those moments. Maybe you remember what was going on in your life when you were reading those past books. Perhaps these books were the only good things when you look back to that time of your life. But you don't feel sad.
You feel glad. And you feel happy. And they will be with you even if there is no next series. They have forever altered your life in the best way possible.
This is probably why the last book of a series is almost always my favourite one.

i think WAY too much about the hc of lightning having rosacea. its at the forefront of my mind ALWAYS.
his cheeks are perpetually flush, thats a given. it goes hand in hand with his sight issues (light sensitivity - also an autistic trait; goes hand in hand with sensory processing disorder which i Also believe he has), and it flares up with emotional stress.
lightning isn’t a big stresser, not during the day at least. he really doesnt worry about anything unless he has a Reason to be worried about it, like something hes been warned about. however, his nightmares are a WHOLE different story - he doesnt realize it, but they cause such an immense amount of stress for him at night. the only thing he ever really stresses ABOUT is going to sleep, he hates it with every fiber of his being, because he knows what’ll come to him in the middle of the night and he knows he cant do a thing about them. he himself wouldnt label it as stress though, only sally and doc and literally everyone around him who’s been a witness to this sheer discomfort whenever it comes time to rest.
so, in the middle of the night, he’ll have these nightmares, and he’ll Stress in his sleep. it’s why he listens to music so often while he sleeps, that walkman helps keep him some type of calm if its not too bad, but when it IS bad? oh. god.
he’ll wake up in the morning with a face so burning hot it could be mistaken for a fever, and sometimes possibly some vision impairment (blurry - this goes away over the course of a couple hours; worsened light sensitivity - this one lasts the entirety of his flare ups), his cheeks and nose are red and underneath the freckles that litter his face you can see little purple blood vessels in his skin becoming more prominent. it drives him NUTS. it also doesnt help his case that these flare ups just make him More exhausted, therefore more subconsciously stressed about falling asleep. its like one big Loop of sheer Hell
sally and doc have both mistaken it for him being sick, but when it Kept happening (and lightning expressed its happened his whole life, just awful flare ups that made his face hurt like hell) doc actually looked into it and figured out what it was. theres no cure for it, but the discovery led to a Lot of attempts at solving the core issue - his nightmares. nothing really worked, and that kind of sucked, but it was better safe than sorry to see if they could dampen the amount of times it DID flare up.
sometimes it looks kinda like he spent an hour standing over a fire pit, letting the flames and smoke billow up into his face - its been mistaken for burns on multiple occasions - and its a pain to race with because his helmet sometimes rubs against it and makes the rash feel 100x more irritated ..
