Astarions Agonies
Why WOULD you want to love someone after everything has been taken from you? Everything but your name. Everything but your name
Your sense of taste, the warmth of your skin, your own heartbeat. Your reflection in the mirror. Your home, your clothes, your friends, your family. Your history, memories, your life.
Stripped of all of this, left with only the ability to feel. Mentally. Physically. And then that, too, is broken. Because it cannot be taken, so it must be controlled.
Anyone you care for, murdered. And not just murdered, but you have to do it. You have to bring them to their death. Maybe you have to watch. So you protect yourself, you protect them- whoever they nay be, whoever they could have been. You cannot care. You cannot. The consequences are too high.
Your body, every touch you delight in is perverted by the same solemn end. How can you enjoy this, even as a distraction from the more violent touches you are forced to endure, when you are still being forced? You cannot choose the sweet, the kind, the gentle, for they meet the same fate as the cruel, the evil, the fools. Picking soft touches over harsh ones fades to picking at random, to grabbing whoever you can get. Because it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It all ends the same way.
And then there is the pain. The Punishments. At first, tastes of who you are- who you can be, are traded out; exchanged for physical torment and 'correction' of your behavior. But the punishments so hea ily outweigh the benefits of a snide remark, a night out too late, a prank, a room visited after being informed it is off limits. A victim you refused to hand over.
This life- no, this Un-death allows for a greater torment than any living person could survive. Hunger, thirst, pain, psychological abuse, sexual abuse. Never, ever ending. There is not a second in the day for two hundred years that you are not watched, used, handled, beaten, starved. Even in your rest there is no relief, for you cannot sleep but only enter reverie- a skill wherein your mind re-lives what you have been through, over and over.
So why would you choose to try to love someone? Why try to trust? Why, when you know what happens when you do?
Perhaps you've been allowed to believe you made it out before, only to have been captured and dragged back. Perhaps you've been allowed to believe a friend or a lover has escaped before, only to be called into a room and advised to clean up their corpse.
The only difference now is the sun on your skin.
The distance between you and that place.
The days, and days, and days that begin to pass with no retribution for your insolence, for your escape.
And these people, these idiots keep... not trying to kill you. Even when they find out what you are. One of them keeps looking at you like they might really care. You can use that, can't you?
Why would you love, when you could use their love to get your revenge?
But... in the wee hours of the morning, in the arms of a living, breathing person who has bedded you more than once and still is not gone forever, you think... maybe, maybe He didn't take it All from you.
Maybe even if he did, you could get it back.
Maybe you could love.
Maybe you could... try living, again.

GOOD MORNING (it is 1.48pm)
i was being silly and wanted to look at the birthdays of ninjago voice actors to see if their zodiacs matched the ninja . here is that.
kai (may 2nd) = taurus
jay (sep 1st) = sagittarius
zane (oct 28th) = scorpio
nya (feb 25th) = pisces
cole (aug 28th, kirby) = virgo
lloyd (oct 5th, his new va samuel) = libra
let’s TALK about it.
OKY FIRST OF ALL NYA PISCES 🎣🎣🎣🎣FISH MENTION. this one stuck out to me first because obviously . Water sign. she’s so freaking real. she’s actually so pisces bro- compassionate, strong intuition, selfless. but also calm and connected with her element. i acc jumped for joy
COLE VIRGO OH MY god. Okay earth sign. okayyyy he’s so virgo you guys don’t know how much this means to me . Likeeee. virgos are perfectionists, they strive to do well, they look up to people. it’s so cole core!! every virgo i’ve met has this calm, caring teachery/parenty presence and omg it’s so cole..
lloyd being a libra is also so real to meeee! he is so earth sign too. especially because they touch on his element being the element of life. peaceful in nature, striving for equilibrium. it’s so lloyd. died. queue that one video of nikki minaj sayinf i love libras
JAY SAG IM GOING TO FUCKING LAUGHJJ. okay mr strong moral compass! (i think of skybound) but honestly i think it works. i do. party animal on the outside but deep thinker on the inside? talk about jay walker! i wasn’t expecting this to work so well but michael and jay acc are so similar (that man embodies jay brilliantly) so !!
zane is very scorpio the more i think about it. At first i was like nooo…noooo.. but i’m freaking surrounded by scorpios (why are so many of you born around this time of year . Stop that.) and the sassier/more comfortable zane becomes with time as he connects w human emotions more (THE SASSYMAN APOCALYPSE HIT THIS NINJA HARD) the more i’m like oh for sure. he’s such a sweetie but he can Come for Smoke for the ninja for laughs ruthlessly and that’s so scorpio.
Fine fine we will address Kai Taurus. vincent tong is such a sweetie so it makes sense for him but i cannot lie and say it’s the perfect match for kai. But! But. he definately has some taurus traits in him- stubborn and hardworking. perhaps he is a taurus rising. Perhaps
Very interesting. i would like to add that i tjink jay is an aquarius moon.

Just gonna be a big rant of word vomit.
Please note I'm not trying to attack anyone I'm just kinda laying my feelings out.
I kinda wonder why I bother with Fandoms. I rarely act in any fandoms I'm hyperfixating over but for hazbin hotel I thought why not. But to the surprise of no one it is just like every other Fandom with backhanded comments always being tossed around. And most of it is centered around the character Alastor which I get but God it's giving me anxiety.
Like right now I'm seeing the a divide on the possibility of him having a kinship with the people of the hotel. Personally I think he does or more like did but he's going back to his roots of keeping everyone at an arms length and using them because of his defeat by the hands of Adam. But I personally think those feelings can resurface, but it's gonna be a battle to do so. But I am seeing a lot that people don't believe those feelings were ever there. He really is just a cold heartless bastard who has a God complex and is just mad he lost and that's it. And I feel like that is also correct. But I don't think that makes my hypothesis or how I feel I read the scene wrong? But I've seen people say "if you think this certain way then you are show illiterate and you don't know his character and IM the only one who understands him!" Like....OK? That's the beautiful thing about any piece of literature characters and scenes, anyone can interpret it in so may different ways and it doesn't make anyone wrong. So can't we all just have our own interpretation and just gush over it instead of scoffing at people who didn't see the same thing you saw?
As for shipping, that's a whole monster within its own. I personally don't think anyone is entitled to dictate what someone can and can't do with pixilated characters. I honestly very much understand that Alastor is a big deal considering he's aroace, and that doesn't get enough media representation. And I respect the hell out of it. But I'll also in the same breath say I'm a shipper. I love staticradio because I'm a sucker for enemies to lovers trope. In canon, I want Alastor to keep being the beautiful dick head he is that just has gossip tea parties with Rosie and just doesn't have those romantic or sexual urges. In fanon, though, anyone can really do what they want. I think as long as there aren't death threats or literal force being used to make the creator of the show force Alastor into a relationship I don't think theirs anything in fanon that should be taken seriously when canon is right there glaring everyone in the face. If people wanna keep the "relationship" one-sided? Awesome. If they want Alastor to smooch someone? Cool. They want him to rawdog or get raw dogged by someone. Hey, power to ya, just put it in the tags so people can steer clear of it if they don't wanna see that. I see many people saying it's erasure, but I just don't see how it's erasure when it's still there in canon. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, can erase Alastor, who is a sassy aroace king. I can't say I don't understand the mentality, though. As a bisexual woman myself, I see fanfics where bi characters are labeled straight or lesbian/gay completely, ignoring that who they date doesn't make them, neither straight nor gay. It does sting and leave a bad taste but again they can say that, they can write all they want and if it's cathartic for them then ok more power to em because at the end of the day that character is still bisexual they didn't erase it. Usually, people are good at tagging, so if they do make them one way or the other, i dont read or look at the art. It's very easy to scroll down. Sometimes i see it repedidly, but that's what blacklisting is for too. There are many countermeasures. Plus, a lot of things are all in good fun or just canon divergence. People can be creative and play with different ideas. "What if a character was like that!?" "What if they do this!?" "What if this happened instead, and it changed their whole character!?" That's what's supposed to be fun about being in fandoms. Everyone is entitled to feel how they feel. You're allowed to not like something. But I don't think you're allowed to make other people feel like shit because they go against canon, or more precisely, against your views. I genuinely don't think anyone ever means disrespect. All they want to do is have fun and create along with like-minded individuals. You're allowed to not like something. Hell, I don't like Vox and Val together, and that shits canon, but that just means I ain't gonna actively seek it out. (I personally ship Valentino with a bug zapper.)
All in all I just want everyone to feel safe and just have fun because I've just seen so many people to scared, me included, to do anything in the Fandom in fear of getting attacked and that's mostly what's been really eating away at me. But at the end of the day, this IS the internet, and discourse is basically its bread and butter.
Like I said though this is mostly just a vent post but I wouldn't mind to hear others thoughts if you're willing. I know I just probably talked out of my ass for forever. At the end of the day we are just all apart of this silly little Fandom of silly little demon people and we should all just be having fun look at what we like, write/draw what we want. It's exhausting spending energy like anger and malice, we should just focus on the things that matter to us and the things we like and just enjoy it for however long the hyperfixation lasts. Nobody is wrong. Nobody is right. we are just creators or people on here to just escape for a little bit and connect with a show or characters that resonate with us.
Ok for reals this time peace ✌️ if you made it this far and actually read everything I had to say thank you, you're a trooper. I hope I didn't offend anyone since that was not my intent. I just had a lot of feelings and I'd rather we all get along then tear each other apart.

some quick notes on miranda
(long ass post warning and i didn‘t edit this because my executive function disorder brain won‘t allow it so no beta we die like men)
contrary to what some people might believe, miranda doesn‘t think she is superior to other people because she‘s genetically modified. look what she says here:
‚You should know I‘ve had extensive genetic modification. Not my choice, but I make the best of it.‘
miranda doesn‘t seem to feel guilty for it, because it wasn‘t her choice. but she also doesn‘t feel like she‘s superior for having perfect genetics (which i feel a lot of people accuse her of), because she knows she only has those because her father paid for it. it isn‘t something she can take credit for. i think she knows she‘s got ‚unfair‘ advantages but she doesn‘t dwell on it - she makes the best of it. she‘s not ashamed to point it out, because it‘s just a fact - if other people interpret her stating the facts as her being cocky and feeling superior to others, that‘s their fault for falsely interpreting what she says. i also think she likes to point out how she‘s good at everything because before joining cerberus her whole life she believed she was a failure - her father constantly criticized her and picked her apart her entire childhood, how could she not believe she was a failure at everything she did?
that time when miranda instantly mentions what she is capable of (‚worried about my qualifications? i can crush a mech with my biotics or shoot its head off at a hundred yards. take your pick.“) isn‘t her bragging. it is miranda preemptively assuming that shepard is potentially doubting her qualifications. because her entire childhood miranda was constantly fighting a battle - constantly having to prove herself to her father. so before shepard even gets the chance to express any doubts, miranda makes sure to tell him what she is capable of because she doesn‘t want to be in that unpleasant position again of having someone doubt her. because she knows she is not the failure her father claimed she was.
she‘s still so traumatized from constantly being criticized, that she just instantly assumes shepard is worried about her qualifications. even though there should be no reason why shepard should be worried about her qualifications right from the start without a proper reason. it‘s the mindset abuse victims have.
miranda isn‘t bragging when she mentions her capabilities. she‘s just avoiding being vulnerable, or she is responding to questions - such as that time when she mentions what benefits she had from her modifications because shepard asked. she wouldn‘t have listed it off if shepard didn‘t ask - which is exactly what conceited people do who like to brag.
miranda, in my opinion, even downplays her modifications. when shepard asks what level of modification she‘s talking about she says
‚It‘s very thorough. Physically, I‘m superior in many ways. I heal fast and I‘ll likely live one time and half again as long as the average human. My biotics are also very advanced - for a human. Add to that some of the best training and education that money could buy and well, it‘s pretty impressive really.“
she‘s got far more modifications than just her lifespan, faster healing and biotics. if miranda really were that conceited she could have listed them all but she didn‘t. she gave shepard a quick run down of the most relevant ones (biotics and healing for instance are relevant to mention because it matters in a combat setting). she‘s not even mentioning her genetically modified intelligence here. she doesn‘t mention that until later. note how she also adds her biotics are only strong by human standards. would a person that is so conceited really mention that? if she were so conceited and self obsessed she‘d use every opportunity to get to brag. and she‘d definitely be mentioning something like superior intelligence much earlier if that were the case.
the rumor that miranda thinks she‘s something better because of her perfect genetics is definitely just a myth, and whoever claims she‘s bragging all the time is wrong

Hey Raven, hope your doing well. I was rewatching book 5 and something struck me. Crowly stills does his thing to get yuu/mc to host the NRC tribe at Ramshackle. But compare to previous chapters hes seems a little nicer, i guess? He offering renovations and upgrades ( a positive), instead of just threatening to cut yuu's food budget or something (a negative).
Where im going with this is, do you think Crowley may have felt a tiny tinge for his (in) action in book 4? Or atleast, realized he actually screwed up. He did give Yuu in case of an emergency.... and promptly ignored it (or just turned it off) when he went on break. He likely had to have heard what happened over the break...an likely saw his missed calls and put 2 and 2 together. Sure he may not feel bad enough to apologize (at least openly), but he does seem to make himself scarce early in b5. That could just be him being, well, the headmage. Maybe he's just not sure how to deal with MC or how they'd react to seeing him? So instead of threatening Yuu, he offers them something instead? Idk, maybe im reaching. Crowley relationship with Yuu is complicated. I do like to believe he has some empathy or regret (or maybe he just has more respect for yuu by b5?) After everything up to that point
Like i said, i may be reaching here. Wanted to get your input. Sorry for the long ask. Have a good one :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In many fandom depictions of Crowley, he often serves as Yuu's guardian who is incompetent but well-meaning. I'm also guilty of doing this, Crowley is considered my OC's father figure (even if my OC isn't a Yuu). That's how we choose to engage with the characters and the world that we love! However, I don't believe that Crowley has that sort of tenderness for Yuu in canon, whether at the start or as their relationship develops over the course of the main story. Now, that's not to say that I think Crowley is cold or hateful towards Yuu. Far from it! He does care for them, but in the same way that a teacher might care about nurturing their students and preparing them for the world beyond graduation. Crowley demonstrates a similar attitude towards other NRC students, with one very clear example being in his Raven Jacket vignettes. In those stories, he likens his students to apple trees that he raises and nurtures, hoping that one day they might bear fruit. He does not particularly grant Yuu special treatment unless it's a scenario where he wants them to do a favor for him. (Though here I would also argue he does the same for other students when he wants them to resolve an issue in his place, which happens frequently in event stories; in Fairy Gala, he warns the boys they'll be held back if classes cannot proceed due to the wacky weather. In Ghost Marriage, Crowley shames the boys for not expressing interest in rescuing Idia, etc.)
I also want to set the record straight regarding how exactly Crowley gets Yuu to comply with his requests. Reviewing all avaliable books in the main story, Crowley rarely outright threatens Yuu if they refuse to help him:
Prologue — Crowley does not initially ask anything of Yuu, but he does provide them a temporary home and food until they can sort something out. During Yuu's stay, they are meant to do handiwork to earn their keep. However, Crowley tries to expel them after their involvement in breaking what is considered a precious chandelier. In this case, his anger is somewhat justified but it's still the one major example of Crowley leveraging something to force Yuu to act in a way that he desires. The thing is, it's revealed in chapter 19 that Crowley did not believe Yuu could acquire the magestone he asked for and was all set to finalize the expulsion papers. So really, he wasn't serious at all in giving Yuu a chance to redeem themselves and was going to expel Yuu anyway (until they happened to prove their "usefulness"). Whether this counts as an example of Crowley "threatening" Yuu, then, is up to individual interpretation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book 1 — Crowley makes no specific request to Yuu. He shows up late in the book and suggests to the frustrated Adeuce that they fight Riddle to claim his seat as dorm leader, but does not tell Yuu to do anything in this situation. Recall that it was Ace that marched up to Ramshackle's front door and demanded that he be allowed to stay overnight; Crowley had no part in that.
Book 2 — In 2-7, Crowley asks Yuu to investigate the strange string of accidents that has befallen the students set to play in the upcoming inter-dorm magift/spelldrive tournament. There is a part where Crowley says he "never promised to cover living expenses". You, as Yuu, have the option to ask him "Is that a threat...?" to which Crowley never properly responds. Interpret that how you wish. He then offers Grim and Yuu a chance to participate in said tournament if they succeed, seeing as they lacked the 7 players needed to form a team. Crowley even says he will find 5 other players to fill in their missing team seats for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book 3 — Here in 3-6, Crowley never actually threatens to cut off food. Instead, he is trying to earn pity from Yuu by guilt tripping them and emphasizing that he, the headmaster, is so busy with his tasks (like finding Yuu a way home) and will provide them with the funds they need regardless because he is so very kind. He's trying to tug at their heartstrings by pointing out the things he selflessly does for them, so they feel obligated to do something for him in return. Once Yuu agrees to help, he lavishes them with praise and says it is "expected" of someone he personally chose.
But!! I want to add that in the Episode of Octavinelle manga, this same scene is depicted as Crowley threatening to cut their food budget. I'm not sure if this is just a different interpretation (since Yuuta seems to prepare more food than is usually implied in the game; this would explain why their food costs go up significantly) or if Crowley truly was also threatening to cut the budget in the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book 4 — Crowley makes a reasonable request in 4-2; he asks Yuu and Grim to tend to the fire fairies over winter break since it's a task no one else will be present to handle. In exchange, he says he will give them a banquet of tasty foods (which is not an empty promise; in 4-39, the Ramshackle Ghosts tell Yuu and Grim that the headmaster has left them with a ton of food as thanks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book 5 — Crowley appears in 5-21 asking that Yuu allow the NRC Tribe to stay at Ramshackle for their month-long training camp. He explains that Vil and Rook are willing to give up their share of the prize money if Yuu agrees to these terms. It is then that Crowley adds that he will help with renovation too, most likely to sweeten the deal with his word.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book 6 — Crowley does not ask anything of Yuu. He does, however, call in STYX in 6-2 because he becomes concerned about the threat that Grim poses after consuming multiple crystallized blots. After Grim is taken, Crowley instructs Yuu in 6-4 to wait until Grim has recovered and been evaluated by a third party to speak with him again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book 7 — Crowley makes no specific requests to Yuu.
You can see in almost all instances that Crowley uses a variety of tactics to get his students to do what he wants them to. He bribes, shames/guilts them, points out very real consequences if the problem at hand is not resolved, and, yes, occasionally makes what can be interpreted as a vague threat. Despite this, the fact remains that he was always nice, not just post-book 4 (in fact, Crowley was also nice during book 4). I don't see the circumstances as "anything before or during book 4 is him being negative and threatening to punish Yuu and anything after book 4 is him being kind and positive to Yuu". In most cases with Yuu, he is offering them something they would want. His go-to strategy isn't threats, it tends to be the promise of a reward.
I wouldn't tie any of Crowley's actions to feeling a sense of remorse or guilt on his own part. While it's true we don't really get to see inside of his head, from what we see of him... this man is utterly shameless. He's willing to resort to emotional manipulation to convince literal children to solve problems that he, the powerful mage and adult, should be dealing with. What's more, he praises himself for Yuu's competence and willingness to step up. That's him placing a lot of faith in his students, and I don't think he feels any guilt in doing this. Why else would he send them into dangerous situations over and over again? He must, to some extent, believe they can already handle themselves just fine, otherwise he's creating tons of legal liabilities for himself by purposefully throwing children of tons of affluent families into the line of fire. Besides, he's a highly skilled mage himself--if any true, TRUE danger were to befall them, surely he could save the day himself. My thought is that he has sort of a "tough love" approach where he tosses his students into the fires and sees how they get out of it in one piece, but it's just presented in a "devil-may-care" way because of his lackadaisical attitude.
Regarding book 4, I personally see Crowley giving his cell phone number as just a means to provide reassurance to Grim and Yuu, since they (especially Grim) are protesting about him seemingly leaving on vacation. It's an empty gesture so he can have his getaway without much of a fuss; I totally believe that Crowley did not ever intend to answer his phone. When he returns in book 5, he's already asking another favor of Yuu, so I get the sense he isn't really bothered by what happened. I would even say that Crowley still has several major appearances in book 5, not that he has made himself scarcer. He appears to ask the favor, appears again to evaluate their performance, and then a third time at the cultural festival to speak with the headmaster of RSA. Crowley gets plenty of screen time here, much more then in books 6 and 7. If he truly felt bad or actively wanted to avoid Yuu, he could easily just tell other students (ie Vil) or even school staff (ghosts, teachers, etc.) to relay the deal for him.
Again, I want to be clear: THIS IS NOT CROWLEY BASHING. The only thing I am expressing in this post is that while I do love this bird-brained goober and think he cares for his students, I don't believe it's done in the conventional sense you're thinking of. Crowley can be selfish and callous and throw his students into danger, and that's okay! Sometimes we want to love a useless man who's trying his best, even if his best is pretty lousy/j
Whew, that was a lot of brain dumping! I hope I properly responded to all your thoughts and that you found this read semi-entertaining~

I think Nora wasn't 100% certain about Nicky’s character until after the first book. When you think about it, book 1 Nicky and book 2 and 3 Nicky are very different.
In The Foxhole Court, Nicky said and did awful things, but then in The Raven King and The King's Men, it's almost like he's a new character. If we think about Nicky’s backstory (provided to us mostly in book 2) and the way he is after book 1, he seems so out of character in the first book, which is funny because that was our introduction to Nicky in the first place.
Additionally, I think Nicky's book 1 behavior was mostly a plot device used to show Andrew's protective behavior and foreshadow his opinions regarding consent.
By the end of the series, we know Nicky as the guy who left his chance at a good, happy life behind in order to ensure that his cousins wouldn't have to live with the person who made his life terrible. Nicky left behind the love of his life, his chance at a new beginning, and he fought for the twins when he was barely an adult himself. Then, he proceeded to work multiple jobs to make ends meet and to get the twins through high school. And even after that, he stuck by them for college, despite the fact that neither of the twins thank him or show any gratitude towards him whatsoever.
By the end of the series, we know Nicky as the boy who just wants his family to love him or at least acknowledge him. He tries so hard to make up with his parents because he wants them in his life, but then, once they put Andrew in an unforgivable situation, Nicky doesn't hesitate to turn his back on them in favor of Andrew and Aaron.
By the end of the series, we know Nicky as the guy who just wanted to be friends with everyone. He wanted the team to be unified, and he was so happy when, by the end, everyone was able to mingle and act as a team.
Past book 1, we never see the predatory side of Nicky that we saw in book 1. He doesn’t make any more awful comments, and he doesn't make any more moves on anyone. It's not because of Andrew's influence. If Nicky was really a predator like that, he would have done stuff regardless of what Andrew said or threatened, just like how he did in book 1 at Eden's. Sure, Nicky probably says a few flirty things here and there, but that's part of his personality. He's a flirty guy, but the really creepy and downright awful comments and actions he makes and does in book 1 really don't reflect his character at all in books 2 and 3.
So, I think Nora was going to go in one direction with Nicky (which is what we saw in book 1), but then changed her mind and decided to get rid of the predatory, creepy stuff, which honestly made Nicky as a character make more sense based on his backstory. If Nicky was truly a predatory character, we would have seen more evidence of it after book 1.
All in all, it is possible to like or love Nicky while also hating his character in book 1.

the struggle of just coincidentally disliking a piece of media that a lot of conservatives also dislike, but for completely different reasons, so sometimes you'll see youtube recommended videos like "here's why X was so bad" and you're initially like "oh yaayy, yeah I had a lot of criticisms of that too, I'm curious to finally see someone really break down why the plot didn't work! I love media analysis" and then the video is just "it's bad because there's WOMAN in it!!!" ..........ok....

Apologies that this is going to be poorly written but I was rereading Candide and had A Thought™️. So there's the one interpretation of Candide that I very much disagree with where Candide &co having their little farm is basically resigning themselves from the world and isolating themselves from all the bad things and I hate that because all throughout the book they do the opposite. Staying in El Dorado, which was quite literally the best of all possible worlds, would have been removing themselves from the horrors and vices of the world, but they left because in El Dorado they weren't *doing* anything. They could stay there, in as a perfect a world as exists, or they could return to the real, shitty world and use the money to improve it (Candide gives some to someone to try and help them, I forget who it was), and they choose the latter. And then at the end, the "work without disputing" doesn't read as stepping away from the world, what would be stepping away from the world, and what Candide is saying is useless, is just sitting around ~philosophising~ without doing any actual thing.
Tumblr media
Stealing tags here cause idk how to phrase it better, but yes!! the "disputing/discussing/philosophising" option is one that leaves them isolated from the world; all in all Candide isn't necessarily saying Leibnitz was wrong that this is the best world god could create, maybe it is maybe it isn't but certainly it doesn't matter and therefore it's a useless debate, what matters is that either way we can improve it just a tiny bit, and that's what the gardening is doing; it's doing something purposeful that can have a real effect on the world even if it's small, and it's what Candide's doing as well, the book is a commentary on so many different social issues and it's bringing them up not just to say "look how shit the world is" but to show that many of the evils are human made and therefore can be decreased. The earthquake will always happen, that's up to god, but we could maybe not push people off of ships during it.
Also, congrats V on the character development between 'we should be isolated and just philosophise😌' to this
Oh and one last thought, another example of philosophising about the world becoming more equivalent to ignoring the world is when Candide is hurt after the earthquake and asks Pangloss for help, but Pangloss is busy thinking about a tunnel of sulfur connecting Lisbon to Lima where there had been another earthquake, and Candide's just like 'yeah that's great buddy, but i'm fucking dying over here so maybe a little help?'

Hey people, it's been a minute.
Let's talk about one of my favourite third culture characters, Amethyst from Steven Universe.
Tumblr media
I'm gonna preface this by saying she in one of my top kins and I am so excited to be talking about her.
So the thing about my girl Amethyst, her third cultureness is very... understated... In that isn't not a major plotpoint.
I'm pretty sure this is because Steven already comes with a fair bit of the usual third culture angst and structurally it wouldnt make sense for them to both have the exact same character arc, especially being so close.
And honestly I don't think it's nesserary a bad thing. As much as a third culture character like Spider from Avatar can complement and enrich the narrative by being third culture, a character like Amethyst can do some pretty tangible good by just existing as she is (wich makes sense cuz that's kinda touched on in her character arc)
Her third cultureness isn't egnored: she's unlike the other Cristal Gems in that she's picked up human habits like eating and sleeping, playing video games, watching TV, having human friends, being the first to use phones (as well as being much more culturally American in general).
Tumblr media
Her non human side is shown pretty cleverly. She's a gem of course, does and knows alot of gem stuff, but in particular, because she's immortal and doesn't need basically anything to survive, she can be super disregarding of things humans need to make money and live off, or will take them time and energy they don't always have to fix (just like the other Cristal Gems)
Tumblr media
Or
Tumblr media
This totally feeds into her immaturity, since she didn't develop under the strict culture of Homeworld like all the other gems, but the chill, flowy environment that is beach city. Pair that with the fact of her having basically no physical chalanges while living on earth and you can see how she would develop an "the whole world is my playground" mentality.
Speaking of her development, let's talk about that!
*Proceeds to rant about character design for a while*
Tumblr media
Ok so her shapeshisfting powers are super interesting, because as we can gleen from the movie, when she first emerges she copied and shapeshisfted into who or whatever she came across to get her bearings.
(I'm gonna say that's some developmental issue unique to her or maybe all overcooked gems, since we see other quartzes emerge and they don't do that, maybe that's coding for something, not sure).
Her copying is very in character for a third culture kid, and if you look at her formations in order it kinda seems like she's inadvertantly copying the developmental pattern of a human child? (over a much longer time ofc). Then she went through a long pase of partially covering her gem with her shirt and also after a while she gives herself bra straps wich (much like the extra cleavege rose gave herself) she absolutely couldn't have needed, probably copying humans.
Then in future her design speaks volumes! Her top and shoes are that gem-wear seran wrap stuff, ofc with that little unnecessary rip around her gem cuz she gotta. And then those cute frayed jorts with the stars on being so human and organic. It's all really saying, "I'm a bit of both worlds and we all cool with it."
Tumblr media
More thoughts on the rip: it could be ripping the gem-wear to say I'm not JUST a gem, highlighting her human side, it could be there to reveal her gem/draw attention to it like "I'm Amethyst, loud and proud", it could be just cuz she really f***** loves ripped clothes. Idc wich any works good 4 her.
It really shows her full journey of self acceptance.
I feel like alot of the emotional pitfalls Amethyst runs into during her character arc are also very relatable to me at least as a third culture person, even if in her case they aren't directly realted.
Feelings of guilt for existing, feelings of not belonging, self isolation, feelings of not being good enough, comparing yourself to others and rebelliousness are all pretty common.
Tumblr media
So it makes nothing but sence for her to be quietly third culture.
Also this:
Tumblr media
Wich is the lerfect segway into:
My big PSA related rant
This... This will end me. Honestly I'm not even mad about the style rn.
REBECA you could have chosen ANY other Cristal Gem from this one.
Tumblr media
The problem here is, I could see a bunch of humans discriminating against Amethyst for whatever reason actually having an impact on her. Amethyst is the ONLY cristal gem who could tangibly be vulnerable to any form of gem racism, garnet and pearl would just pick the haters up and put them back over the fence.
This whole thing is just highlighting how you didn't explore that angle. Not to mention that the whole show established her to be very close to humanity, and then she just turns to the camera and says "wtf, I'm actually nothing like people"? It just feels wrong.
Also you gave my girl the most handfisted one, idk why those two googly eyed toddlers having a detailed understanding of the neuances of racism seems somewhere between unrealistic and straight up bizarre.
(Ok I tell a lie, the guitar dad one was kinda a mess but nobody even remembers that one so whatever)
That aside, this one should have been on Garnet, she is the most detached from humans of the trio (except for pearl, but I think she's better in that classroom scenario), she should have been the one saying "yea, comparing us ist right" and it would have made sence because it's already evident in the show.
Tumblr media
Amethyst should have been the one at the playground, she doesn't even have to drop out of the sky, its AMETHYST! she can totally just be hanging there.
They did her so dirty! At the end she even gets pissed off about having to stay longer to fix the thing SHE had a problem with.
Don't get me wrong, ist an invaluable message and Im totally on board but gurl what happened?
Hit the image limit... Gonna make a part 2 and get back on the original point oml

It’s my babiessss
Tumblr media
Look at them they’re so silly !!!
Anyways INFODUMP about these characters. This drawing depicts an actors Au but I’m talking about the cannon identities.
Fredrick (he/him) is on the left and Kwan (she/her) is on the right. They grew up across the street from each other and though their families have always been rather close, both of their particular shyness never went away and so it’s only after they bond about being lost after graduating high-school that they really get to know each other. Fred is the eldest adopted son of the ‘Aka ‘Akas and wants to repay and give back everything that they’ve given him over the years, providing him with love and support and even making sure he got to connect to his cultural roots despite growing up in a different household. Kwan on the other hand is the single child of widowed Mr Wang, an old musician and gardener who’s health is rapidly declining. With the economy also in shambles the two make a pact to join the army to provide for their families but before they can fate seems to intercept and turns Kwan into an anxious dragon, thus Fredrick runs after her in a cross country teenage trip shenanigans like story as they learn the importance of overthrowing the government with your family and also finding your passion. And also that love can’t be repaid only passed forward. Anyways that confuses this silly rant. They are side characters sigh

There is also a round orange kitty floating in the background.

Dead Dove and Dark Heir: An Analysis
TW// incest, age gap relationships
I do think Dark Heir is a bit more subversive than most other YA titles. Obviously, we have the BDSM coded relationship between Will/Sarcean & James/Anharion. But I think it goes further than that because the books don't shy away from more taboo things in the way a lot of recent YA titles tend to. Namely, incest and age gap relations. Furthermore, I think its willingness to engage with these topics with nuance adds to the depth of its chatacters.
For example, Will and Katherine. We need to talk about them, lol. I think whether they're actually blood related or not is ultimately irrelevant because of one detail. Katherine looks a lot like the Lady, and the Lady looks a lot like Will's mother, Eleanor. So, from the very beginning, Will pursues someone who looks like his mother, or the woman who raised him at the very least (albeit abusively). He has ulterior motives for doing so, but there's no doubt he felt an attraction to Katherine, and Katherine definitely felt attraction for him. It's all very Freudian. And I think how Dark Heir handles this complicated blend of romantic attraction & familial connection is what sets it apart from some other YA works. It refuses to draw definitive lines between these two feelings within Will. Will doesn't even feel especially disgusted or anguished by his flirtation of someone who turned out to be his sister. He probably suspected it as he was flirting with her. It's weird, but one can say it's the natural consequence of Will being his own person but also being Sarcean at the same time. Will doesn't feel or react normally to these tangled up feelings because he's not normal.
Now for age gaps. There's a lot of examples, but the main ones are Tom & Devon, James & Simon, Will & Howell, Cyprian & Ettore, Visander & Sarcean. The books frame James and Simon very negatively. It was abuse, period even though Simon was never able to have James become his lover. But the way characters like Jannick and Cyprian, following his father's example, and some other Stewards frame it doesn't acknowledge the abuse & instead blames & shames James for the supposed "relationship." This is horrible in this case, of course, but I think it speaks to a relatively blasé, maybe even period typical view of relationships between teens/young men & older men that goes on to affect & complicate every relationship/interaction listed above, some in ways different than to how it affects James & Simon. But I will come back to James at the end of this, so put a pin in that.
With Tom & Devon, I don't think the book has especially condemned it or portrayed it as inherently abusive. Tom is an adult for one. But Devon is undoubtedly thousands of years older than him. There's an element of Devon not telling Tom everything that I think is hinted at. At the end of Dark Heir, Violet thinks that Tom is strangely ignorant about the bigger picture of what's going on. He only knows what he learned from his Dad & Sinclair. At least Violet thinks so. It makes one wonder why he doesn't seem to know more even though he's dating someone who knows so much more than even Sinclair. Perhaps this is a consequence of the age gap between Tom and Devon. I don't particularly think this must mean Devon is abusive for dating Tom. And he's not, imo, comparable to the Regent from Captive Prince. But I think Devon's walls are up, and it maybe benefits him to keep Tom in the dark about all that Devon knows. This is part of a pattern that these books follow when it comes to most of their age gap relationships. They're not summarily condemned, but rather they're complicated, and their dubious, more negative qualities are subtly hinted at.
Visander and Sarcean is one such complicated age gap relationship. Upon hearing about Will from Elizabeth, Visander thinks, "This time I am the man and you are the youth." Near the end of the book when Visander confronts Will he says, "You're the same age now as I was when you killed my family." So it appears that when Sarcean slept with Visander, Sarcean was an adult, and Visander was a young man of about 17. When Visander is first introduced in the story, Sarcean thinks of him as a "young man" and a "young guard" and a possible "dalliance, to pass the time." This imbalance is only enhanced when Sarcean later thinks of Visander as "a trifling, easy to fool." Visander was a youth in love, and Sarcean was a man looking for easy amusement. Visander later feels betrayed by Sarcean for apparently killing his family. He emphasizes that he had trusted Sarcean. Their age gap adds an uncomfortable layer to Sarcean's treatment of Visander and how it might have contributed to Visander's lasting hatred of him. A hatred that, in turn, has Visander trying to kill Will, or the Dark King as a youth, as Visander sees it. Their age gap has now been reversed, and taking advantage of Will's youth, much like Sarcean took advantage of Visander's youth, he will take this opportunity to kill Will. It's like a cycle. Again, the book does not explicitly go out of its way to condemn Sarcean sleeping with a young Visander. It simply adds complications and nuance to the characters & their relationship that the reader must interpret themselves.
Will and Captain Howell's interactions are similarly ambivalent and complicated. Will knowingly initiates the flirting between them, and he doesn't seem particularly afraid of Captain Howell's advances. But their power dynamic is switched when Will uses his power to control Howell. The scene plays out like a scene of sexual exploration and discovery. Will tells Howell "No, don't fight it, just let me", he says "you're mine already", and when Howell calls him Master will thinks "Yes" as "with a lurch, he was inside Captain Howell." In many ways, it mirrors the scene where James pushes his magic into Will to release Will's magic. The sexual subtext is inescapable. But Will taking control of Howell is framed as feeling empowering to Will. Will effectively flips the power script of a young man and an older man in a sexual encounter, which brings awareness to the fact that the script usually doesn't play out like this. Their interaction is further complicated when James sees Howell and Will and freaks out. I'll come back to this...
The last significant age gap "relationship" is Cyprian with Ettore. This relationship is more subtle with its sexual subtext, but it's there. Ettore teases & pokes at Cyprian. We later learn this is because Ettore is himself a Steward, and he sees himself and his past flaws in Cyprian. But some of Ettore's teasing takes on a sexual nature. First, when his men ask Cyprian for a kiss and Ettore himself says, "Rethinking that kiss?" Then, when Ettore invites Cyprian to watch him have sex with a prostitute, who he has dressed in a Steward's tunic. After, Ettore emerging from the bedroom soon after Cyprian, "ostentatiously tucking in his shirt" makes Cyprian flush because of the implications Ettore undoubtedly wanted to illicit. This teasing and mockery come to head when Ettore asks Cyprian to kneel and beg him for help. Cyprian acquiesces despite the burning humiliation of it. This is when James goes to Cyprian and tells him he didn't like watching Cyprian kneeling for Ettore.
James says it's because he doesn't like being reminded that Stewards can be selfless, but I think it goes deeper than that and connects with James's reaction to Will and Howell. James freaks out when he sees Will and Howell holding on to each other. He asks Will if Howell hurt him. James's fear here can easily be interpreted as a remnant of his experiences with Simon. James has been hurt & taken advantage of (nearly sexually) by an older man. So when he sees Will and Howell, his mind goes to the worst possibility first. Similarly, I would argue that James's discomfort with watching Cyprian kneeling for Ettore is similarly connected to his trauma with Simon & Sinclair. This connection is supported when, later in the book, as Sinclair tries to collar James, Sinclair orders James to kneel.
These are some of the ways Dark Heir uses more subversive and taboo subjects to add depth and subtext to its world and chatacters, without forcing the readers to see these subjects in only one way. The series, much like Pacat's other work, doesn't shy away from so-called Dead Dove subject matter. And I think that's a strength of the series.

°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°•°♡°
- Terry had come a long way from the person he once was during his Vietnam days. He's no longer the skinny, doe-eyed, somewhat innocent kid who came from a rich family all to prove to his father(and himself) that he is a man.
- He had an empire of his own now, dynatix industries, a nuclear waste disposal company that had been handed down to him by his father. He's done plenty of shady things, getting on the cover of the latest magazine and news papers was a regular thing for him. His physique was envied by men who were associated with him even. Perfectly sculpted face and an equally perfect charm to go with it.
- He had a playboy reputation with more money than most in the upper crust society. He's manipulative and will use any tactic he sees fit if needed. Everyone else is below him and he always had a good time toying with people. He's had his time with girls of every race, age , color, you name it. When Terry Silver wants something, he will definitely get it. So when he sets his sites on his beloved for the first time, he isn't bewildered immediately until he finds out more about them.
- If anything he sees them as the enemy at first, a stigma that's been around since the time he's been to Vietnam. He never forgot what happened there. Waking up in cold sweat after seeing his friend killed right infront of him, the bomb blasts and torture they all had gone through. A parting gift of the war.
- his beloved has certainly perked his interests though, whether they're apart of his upper crust society or simply a nobody there's definitely something about them that he can't seem to look past them. Maybe it's their features that is embedded in his head after he first saw them.
- Or it could be their characteristics or personality that's different from every woman he's ever been with. Maybe it's the way they walk, the way they talk, heck maybe it's the way they breathe. Terry will notice everything.
- Terry finds himself looking for beloved all the more. No amount of coke or bedding woman who even looks like them does the trick. He finds himself needing to find out everything about his beloved. He'd immediately thought of hiring an entire team of private investigators to find out every little thing about them. He wants to know their history, who is responsible for bringing his newly formed 'problem' into this world.
- He eventually sets on doing the job by himself. Stalking them, breaking in and entering into their home whilst they're in a deep sleep. He by hearted they're daily routine, he knows when they're in a deep sleep during the late hours of the night. He knows what they eat, what they wear, what hobbies they have, all down to what brand of shampoo they use. He utilizes anything that will help him understand what they are all about.
- He'd sometimes leave something behind in they're home, a dingy apartment unworthy of beloved in his eyes regardless of how well maintainedit is or not. Maybe a hundred dollar bill or even his own semen on their pillows after jerking off on their bed. He'd take something for himself too. Maybe a pair or two of beloved underwear suddenly goes missing.
- After everything he's come to know of beloved with them being none the wiser, he curates a persona of himself that fits all of beloved needs and wants ultimately becoming their dream man before he comes face to face with them again.
- Terry entraps beloved in his web afterwards. He makes sure they're smitten with him and never suspects a thing, giving them everything he knows they want from a partner gaining their trust over a short span of time. Once he's got them where he wants them he would reveal his true self. Ultimately hurting beloved so deeply because they are in fact the enemy. There's a price you have to pay for taking up so much of his time and consuming his mind.
- He thinks he's finally gotten what he wanted after breaking beloved completely but he still isn't able to move past them. It finally dawns upon him that he is in fact in love with beloved and no matter what he tells himself he cannot find anyone to replace them, no amount of coke or people who look like them.
- Terry sets about getting them back this time as himself. No matter where beloved goes he will find them. He will kidnap them if need be in the occasion of them denying everything he's offering them. He will help them see reason in time. He will go to any lengths to make sure beloved remains at his side.
- Stockholm syndrome will be in full swing. He erases the identity beloved once had as no one has the right to so much as know what beloved looks like without his permission. He'd estrange beloved from they're friends and family making them see how he's the only one they need.
- Preparations for the wedding will be in full swing. The wedding of the century. Everyone will know and will be ultimately shocked that playboy Terrence Silver has settled down. The entire world would know months in advance yet they would never see the actual ceremony regardless of the royal standard preparations that's been made. Terry's beloved is for his eyes only.
- The media only gets a single glimpse of beloved and they're rarely seen afterwards. Only when Terry deems it fit at some gala or event. Rest assured, no other woman ever crosses his mind again. He's fully consumed by beloved without them knowing the power they truly have on him. He'd go to any lengths to sure them his devotion too.
- beloved is the only one he'd trust with the truly gruesome parts of his life, through the Vietnam flashbacks where he'd sometimes need to hold them tightly the entire night or sometimes just their presence in the room at a distance. They've seen it all with him including the way he's beloved friend John Kreese had left him when things went down south. Beloved is the only thing that helps keep him grounded.
- Terry eventually starts a legacy of his own with beloved making sure that everything goes as he planned. Nothing is too much or unnecessary for his Silver empire.
Decades later he looks at himself in the bathroom mirror, thinking of how everything had suddenly took a turn in his life that one fateful day he'd set his eyes on beloved. His reflection stares back at him and next to it, ponytail stands with a smile on his face. His long lost war buddy whose personality and traits he's personally taken over as a tribute to his friend.
"You've chosen well twig." , ponytail says and vanishes in the next second leaving Terry smiling faintly at the thought. Letting his now silver colored hair down from its confines, he goes into his bedroom joining his beloved in bed.

Ahh, I hope I've done this ask justice!

I follow a music/audio focused project and look at the fandom sometimes, but not more often because the English language side seems to skew younger and (sigh) anti. Much of the analysis feels too Watsonian, and there's one strain of it that's just projecting onto chatacters, period, for want of canon material. I don't think it's aimed at that audience. It has mature themes, albeit shallow. It puzzled me until I remembered: the setup is about judging characters' morality 🤦

1, 4, 13, 14 and 22 for the 🔥 ask game! Bloodborne fandom
1- You know already because i am an npc with 4 dialogue lines at max and i keep complaining about all the same stuff LMAO. But yeah. Definitely Maria. The majority of the fandom sees her as either 1) outright heroic or 2) as tragic but not in a way that gives her agency but in a "oooh le poor manipulated woman who didn't know what was going on" while still trying to potray her as a girlboss who takes no shit from no one which at best makes her look inconsistent at worst makes her look as dumb as rocks. Let your female chatacters be messy y'all!!. This is the one i have the most gripe on but also i dislike the "gehrman is a misogynistic creep who is worse than anyone else in the whole world because he had a mental breakdown after maria's death no matter the fact that there is a character who at best is involved in three different genocides." I also loathe the "Willem was right and did nothing wrong and didn't order the hamlet massacre". Another fan unfavourite of mine is when adeline is reduced as maria's flower loving cottagecore gf. But ig that's how fandom flanderization works 😔😔😔
4- Eeeeh,,,, i am really block trigger happy, so i either block 1) when someone is being rude as shit in the tags for having opinions different than theirs or 2) when a person's content starts to annoy me so much that i can't just scroll past it anymore
13- MARIAAAAAA--‐-- most maria fans just suck out any of her interesting and nuanced traits to reduce her to simply "rude girlboss whose favourite hobby is kissing adeline and also maybe cries about what she's done. If we actually remember that the fishing hamlet massacre was wrong" also brador but i wont go onto a rant about it lest a lightbulb explode in my room. Either way, for any character of bb. Please please please write the adult characters as adults and not le sillay teenagers they're all at best in their early thirties,,,,, (and also don't reduce them to a single fandom accepted trait)
14- Idk for this one i don't have much to complain about cause i am super selective about them 😭😭 I'd say the extreme hornyness but for me it's a bonus lol
22- Hmmmm,,,, it's a bit complicated for me to say? I guess that lately the whole cosmic horror aspect of it has been really downplayed- which is a shame if you compare the bb cosmic horror with the lovecraft one and how you see that bb can also work as a critique of lovecraft's racism and xenophobia. Right now the most common interpr is the femininity one which i am not opposed to but also one can hear it so many times (and without any analysis- just the same thing repeated by big youtubers without any spin of it) before getting sick + people who are super fervent about it keep insisting it's the ONLY interpretation which makes it soo annoying. Guys. Guys. Things can have more than one meaning if you want to act intellectual about it AT LEAST recognize the number one rule in academia/literary analysis 😭
