My chicken run is made of chicken wire instead of hardware cloth, but they’re only in there during the day. At night we lock them up inside their secure attached house. Is this ok or should we add hardware cloth? I’m from the north east USA and I’ve never had issues with predators getting through the wire but I know it’s possible. I just want what’s best for my girls
You should add hardware cloth because a fox or a dog will still try to get to your chickens through it even during the day. It's a misconception that chickens are safe from predators during the day when a lot of chicken predators will still attempt to infiltrate a run and I have seen canines just rip into it like it's tissue paper.
Here is a post from someone who lost their whole flock due to using chicken wire. All of the chickens in this picture are dead due to owner negligence, and I'm sure they won't make this mistake again. If you use chicken wire for your run, you can also learn from this sad occurrence because it can happen at any time.
I took part in the Exploring 3D Materials Workshop this week as I haven’t done anything 3D for my project yet. In this workshop I ended up constructing a t-shirt out of chicken wire. I then played around with the shadows that the wire created to possibly project it onto something or someone in the future.
I first planned out the dimensions for the t-shirt with the help of my tutor to plan out how long each part of the shirt should be. I then cut out each part of the chicken wire with the template that I made out of brown paper. I used a thinner more flexible black wire to tire each part of the t-shirt together.
The work I did in this workshop relates strongly to my project as making clothing out of uncomfortable and really dangerous materials is a way to show how disruptive clothes can feel on the body. I plan to use other unusual materials to create more shirts with the template I made in this workshop to further develop this. I found this workshop really interesting as it expanded the materials I used and made me consider form and structure in a 3D environment.
I was experimenting with the chicken wire. Just seeing what I could make out of it and I made a sort of make shift mask with paper on the front that i can poke holes into. I wet it with water to make it softer. Putting it on I cant see but If I poke the paper I can see if I want to. I didn’t really come to this conclusion in my thoughts it sort of just unfurled.
Today I looked at Limerick Lace. I was fascinated by its transparency and airiness and the endurance of the women creating it. So I reproduce one of the lace's flowers and then experimented with its shadow. I also thought of making a scarf with limerick lace that a dancer could perform with, but I don't think I'll follow up on that idea.
The flower is made out of white acrylic yarn stitched into chicken wire.
I put both masks on a board which I painted black. I nailed the masks in to make them more secure and then using chicken wire created a lifted effect with the full mask. I don’t have pictures but to make the glue and chicken wire less prominent, I painted another coat of black on to the board.
This piece is to represent the similarities between makeup and masquerade. Both are used in an attempt to create a confidence that lasts as long as you wear them.
Doing a big push on the coop. Hoping to finish it this weekend, or at least close enough that I can finish this coming week.
Hubs added the outside platform and ramp. He started reworking the doggy door for the chickens to go into their run. It hasn't been added yet, but you can spy it through the hole above the platform.
I added most of the wire to the backside of the coop, but will have to add more along the top line because the piece I used was a remnant from the other sides.
It doesn't cover enough quite yet. After I finish wrapping the run, I can cut a final piece to finish it off. Something something maintaining straight lines.
The weird corners of the run have been wired.
And the first piece of the top wire has been stapled in.
I think I only need one more on the top to finish it, but I'm not sure. I need to overlap them and wire them together for best coverage. Hoping to get the top finished today.
