RIP Matilda (2007 (?) - September 11th 2023), my first rescue dog and certainly not my last. A sassy blend of Lab/Rat Terrier/Mountain Cur/GSD/Husky/Chow.
(top three were from her physiotherapist, Sebry; many thanks to him for the help he delivered to her. The last is her shelter intake photo circa 2008 <3)

chow pit mix or husky gsd mix?
these both have the potential to be lovely or awful depending on what traits get passed down lol. i guess the husky/gsd, if we're playing designer dogs and i can say i want one that has the husky non-aggression to people and dogs, and the husky orthopedic health, combined with the GSD biddability. "shepskies" are a popular designer mix around my area, mostly i assume from people who want a dog with dark GSD coloring but blue eyes, and they run the gamut from being perfectly nice dogs to "holy shit abomination."
i've honestly met a lot of really nice chow mixes (one of my fave dogs ever was a beautiful golden-chow mix) but the potential for a dog to come out as more Chow than not is always a little unsettling lol

Would you say that dobermans are difficult dogs to own and raise? How do they compare to the other breeds you've had experience with in your life & training?
So I'll speak to what I've personally owned- as a dog trainer, I've trained a bunch of different breeds and mixes, but I see them for an hour at a time and then send them home to their families, so it's a little different imo.
What I have personally owned is: GSDs [and mixes], chihuahuas [and mixes], dobes, chow mix, pit bull, swissy.
I would say out of all of these, the dobes are probably the most intense BUT also my GSDs were just shitty Amish-bred GSDs and my dobes have been working bred so there's probably some skewing there. But the GSDs, the chow mix, and the pit bull all had their own challenges, and weren't necessarily easy dogs either for various reasons.
I think dobes are not necessarily "hard mode" dogs- I think there are breeds that are much more intense and much harder to own than this one. But I also think that a lot of people do underestimate just how intense dobes are, and so get in over their heads with dogs that are just acting like their breed.

Clover's embark came back! Mostly husky like we thought.
The other breeds come from one grandparent who was primarily chow chow/gsd. They also identified American Eskimo and border collie in the supermutt. The other three grandparents were pure Siberian husky
Health wise she inherited two copies of the low ALT gene, meaning we should be on the lookout for signs of liver failure as she ages (though it is likely it will never be an issue). She inherited one copy of the exercise-induced-collapse gene, though it shouldn't affect her since it is a recessive gene (it is more of an issue for the puppies she had before we adopted her but... Idk man I didn't do that shit).
Anyway I'm so glad to finally get these it took so long ;-;

In Maryland: Barkley is 1 year and 8 months old. He is a German Shepherd mix (50% GSD mixed with Chow Chow, American Staffordshire Terrier and Boxer). He is a big puppy who doesn’t think that his 88 lb body is too big to be a lap dog.
He is very energetic, loves to play and is very much a velcro dog. He loves to stay close to you and will follow you around everywhere. I rescued him from an abusive owner when he was about 10 weeks old and love him very much. He is reactive/aggressive on the leash and has had two biting incidents in my apartment building. The bites were minor. He is a very loyal companion and will make a loving addition to any home. He is otherwise a well-behaved boy minus a chewed-up shoe or two. He is in good health, neutered, and up-to-date on all shots. He’s a big dog with a loud bark but is more anxious and scared than anything else. He doesn’t do well with cats. He hasn’t been around many other dogs, but in the past he has done well at the dog park. He loves squeaky toys. He hates the vet and it is impossible to trim his nails. Besides not realizing how big he is when he jumps on you he has been good around my grandchildren who are 8 and 3. He is crate trained, but I don’t put him in it very often. He likes to walk you instead of you walking him. He is a puller on the leash. He’s very smart and can open doors. He picks things up very quickly.
Please contact his rescue advocate at [email protected] if you can help him!

A few weeks ago, I sent out Ada's Embark test, and the results came in yesterday!
First, a reminder of her lovely face:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's the prettiest princess. <3 And now....
*drumroll*
...the reveal!
Tumblr media
She's a LOT Pittier than I expected. The "Supermutt" consists of German Shepherd, Boxer, Australian Cattle Dog (which I thought was her main breed), and Chow Chow.
The Boston accounts for her petite size and huge ears, and her coat is GSD-like, but where she got the lil muttonchops and goatee are a mystery. She has the gene for "furnishings," aka mustache and beard, but NONE of her breed results typically have that gene, so there must be a Schnauzer or something lurking in her gene pool.

Yayyy more Breadstick ♥️♥️♥️ I don't see Basenji in her, she doesn't have the eye set, face shape, tail or build. I still say pit but less than 50% (face is too narrow), definitely some cattle dog (my bet is on GSD or Belgian Malinois), some hound maybe? And gundog for the webbed feeties. Vocalizations don't mean much, especially with rescues lmao, some dogs are just Weird or have... difficult pasts. I'd love to see results of a DNA test though! For your other dog I'd say golden mix? Hound too?
Hehehehe thank you for your expertise ~ and also for all your nice words hehehe I didn't thank you on the last one. I hope she has some shep or someth bc she's a lil twerp and I would love her to get a lil bigger (you see the size I'm used to hahahaha) I love that little shit sm. Will update if/when I do the test for her. My little dumb street dog 🥺🥹😔🫰
Big boy is Chesapeake bay retriever (I've had a pure chessie growing up and,,,?????I 🤨🤨🤨🤔🤔🤔🤔) and chow (speckled tongue so that tracks) almost no golden or lab in the etop matches according to those results. Kinda nuts.

There’s a post that’s getting traction on Reddit. Picture of a dog lying down, head high, seemingly relaxed, in the rain. OP complained that the owner brought their chihuahuas in but left the larger dog out in the rain. Like some people forget that there are dogs that genuinely prefer to be outside. As long as their needs are being met, there’s nothing wrong with that. I had a dog that would’ve lived outside if I had allowed it, but alas for him, the climate didn’t and I would bring him in so he wouldn’t get heatstroke
All of my dogs except the dobermans have wanted to be outdoor dogs whenever the weather matched their usage.
The GSDs had to be drug back inside, literally had to *drag them across the back yard* whenever it wasn't the height of summer. The chow mix was similar in the snow. Sushi would rather spend 100% of her time outdoors in the winter and protests when the temperature is over 50F. The chihuahuas both try leading me on a merry chase across the backyard every year when the snow melts and spring turns to summer when I want to catch them and bring them inside, and they refuse to not lay in direct sunlight and nap during the 95F days. Evander always wanted to be outside, rain snow sleet or shine.
The dobermans remain my only dogs who have insisted on going in the house. And honestly I think that's largely because they valued me more than outside time, because of their original breed usage. These other dogs? All of them either intended or deep historical roots in being majority outdoor dogs.
Sushi spent a winter mostly hanging out in my car or on my screened porch. That's where she *wanted* to be. I had to drag her out/away from these areas when the temperatures dipped colder than I was comfortable exposing her to unsupervised.
