Reading The Hidden Oracle: Chapter 38 (SPOILERS)
"The plague spread." These are not promising starting words.
"Strangely enough, Damien White got sick right after he learned that Chiara was sick. The two had cots next to each other in the infirmary . . . even though they kept sniping at each other whenever they knew they were being watched." OTP OTP OTP
"recruiting whales and hippocampi to help him haul away the Colossus." How're they gonna get rid of the oil? Would the seashells and sand dollars that Percy used that the Triple G Ranch and in the Manhattan rivers work in this scenario?
"his own weathered, bearded mien." MIEN (n.): a person's look or manner, especially one of a particular kind indicating their character or mood
"The canoe dock could be rebuilt." And guess who's gonna be rushing to be the first to use it? None other than our best worst Canoe Duo!
"The Colossus's footstep craters could be repurposed as convenient foxholes or koi ponds." I really like the koi pond idea.
"The only major damage was to the Demeter cabin . . . the Colossus had managed to step on it before turning around" I'll bet that was on purpose. What if Nero goes after Miranda and Billie and any of Meg's other half-siblings as a warning to her?
Oh wait, is Apollo going to get slapped in the face by the Styx for using the plague arrow on the Colossus? Ah, the Styx's slaps are relatively gentle, anyway.
"At the moment, I did not want to be Apollo. All the destruction I saw below me... it was my fault." You know, this is one of the few times when the protagonist wallows over a disaster or conflict being their fault and I actually agree somewhat. The villain being his distant descendant, he's responsible for them to a degree and his neglect of his duties as a god allowed them to grow their power. Most of the Oracles being lost is his fault, but I am hesitant to blame the loss of Delphi on him considering the lockdown state of Olympus and split personality going on when Python took it over. Lots of this is his fault, though.
"What I needed to do was to find her. I wondered if Meg had phrased her order that way on purpose, or if that was just wishful thinking on my part." 100% wishful thinking. There was too much going on at that time for Meg to think that much about her phrasing and even if she did, if she wanted to be found, she wouldn't have run away to begin with.
"I should leave Camp Half-Blood immediately, before the campers woke." Don't do that. That is unwise. Athena would never recommend that. Don't pull a Nico and suddenly disappear when no one is looking.
"I wanted to flirt with Chiara and steal her away from Damien... or perhaps steal Damien away from Chiara, I wasn't sure yet." Please do not.
"Because I was a coward, I waited too long." Same.
"Lord Apollo." I love how Rachel still calls him Lord Apollo when he clearly looks like Lester Papadopoulos.
"The Arrow of Dodona just gives random advice." Yeah, where did that arrow come from? I'm willing to bet it's just something that exists in Greek mythology with no further explanation. It talks and gives sage advice simply because it does. No further context.
"'I appreciate the offer of assistance, but--' 'Whoa.' Percy held up his hands." He's drawing a CLEAR line. No taking chances that he might end up going unwillingly on a quest again. "'I'll go,' Rachel said. I shook my head." Aw, I wanted to see The Wacky Misadventures of Rachel the Prophecyless Oracle and Apollo the Powerless Sun God. It'd be so interesting to see a mortal go on a quest normally intended for demigods!
"I've lost too many people to bad influence . . . We almost lost Nico, too..." Bullshit. Nico never once blinked in the general direction of Kronos's army.
"I didn't want to speak the words." No, not the limerick! "A limerick?" "I know! . . . I'm doomed!" No, not the limerick!
"Percy slapped his knee. 'There you go. Happiness approaches. Happy is a name'" I get that Percy knows Festus, but how does he know that he's a three-seater? He's only seen Festus in his dragon form when he picked up Gaea. I guess it's unreasonable to assume the Lost Trio never bragged about their own quest.
Where did Leo get all that Celestial bronze to rebuild Festus's body? They had a hard enough time getting enough bronze to repair the ship that one time with Echo and Narcissus.
Anyway, HAPPINESS APPROACHES. I never thought to link that to Festus!

Title:  Black Colossus (1933)
Author:  Robert E. Howard
Vote: 7/10
By divine intervention Conan finds himself at the head of an army of men to defend an under attack kingdom and a princess from a Stygian sorcerer. The battery is at the center of the story and proves to be coherent despite the dense ex machina that places the Cimmerian at the center of the story.

i hate to break it to you guys but "battle medic" does not mean "medic who battles." it means "medic who treats people who have been wounded on a battlefield"
Will Solace has NEVER been depicted wielding a weapon. Yes he has a bow at Camp Half-Blood in TLH but he is not using it. Will has been present on-page for five major battles: the battle of Manhattan, the seige of Camp Half-Blood, the Colossus Neronis invasion, the seige of Nero's tower, and the battle against Nyx. He is wielding a weapon for ZERO of those battles.
In Manhattan, he is healing the wounded far from the front lines.
In the seige for CHB, he had just come from the infirmary and was assisting, unarmed, in a sabotage mission (which relies on stealth rather than combat). he then literally runs away when confronted with a fight.
In the Colossus invasion, he helps Nico steal a chariot and then retreats to the infirmary.
In the Tower of Nero, he heals Luguselwa and then rescues Nico and retreats, without having to actually fight anyone off.
In the battle against Nyx, he inflicts hay fever on the goddess with his plague powers, throws some big rocks at monsters, and sings to amplify Nico's abilities. this is BY FAR the most aggressive we have ever seen him during a battle.
In TSATS Will says he doesn't like fighting and chooses not to practice at it. Will Solace cannot fight and that's on purpose. He's competent and contributes in other ways, and he doesn't have to fight to be a hero, i love that about him

The Roman Empire during the Flavian Dynasty, 69 - 96 CE
A map illustrating the territorial extent and political boundaries of the Roman Empire during the Flavian Dynasty, around 96 CE. Although a short-lived sequence of reigns from Vespasian (69 - 79 CE) through Titus (79 – 81 CE), until Domitian (81 - 96 CE), the Flavians (an Italian gentry, and not traditional Roman aristocracy) are remembered for restoring stability to Rome after the turbulent reign of the last Julio-Claudian – Nero, and the civil wars that had wreaked havoc on the Empire and Italy in particular. Theirs was a rule noteworthy for increased recruitment of equites (upper-class plebeians) to the imperial administration and civil service, the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the completion of Amphitheatrum Flavium (better known as the Colosseum for being in the vicinity of a giant 30 meters (98 feet) bronze statue called the Colossus of Nero) and signing an uneasy peace treaty with the Dacians before the conflict flared up again under the reign of emperor Trajan.

Whats Your favorite character design? Could be from a game you played or haven't played.
If you mean generally, I like more clean designs with like… either one big focal point or increasing amounts of intricate details that are cohesive. To name a few: Alice Elliot from Shadow Hearts, Ezio in Assassin’s Creed II, most iterations of Lara Croft, Pyramid Head and the Bobblehead Nurses, DMC4 Nero, Heather Mason, Genichiro Ashina, Mercy and Hanzo in Overwatch, Okatsu in Nioh, OG FFVII Aerith, Genesis and Sephiroth in Crisis Core, the FFXV guys + Lunafreya, the vast majority of characters Kojima has designed, all the Colossi in Shadow of the Colossus + most Soulsborne bosses (Dancer of the Boreal Valley is a standout fave).
I don’t really have a single favorite character design I can point you to because it’s situational tbh lol — I really like a character to look like they belong in the universe they exist in and fit their role in that universe. Like… if you dumped your average Final Fantasy character into The Last of Us or vice versa I’d find it extremely offputting. I personally can’t vibe with white haired battle bots wearing lolita/ouji fashion and lingerie for uniforms if it’s solely for fan service. That kind of thing.
You could also show me a character design I absolutely love depicted in an art style that I really hate and that would be a total turn off as well lol — but that’s more of an animation thing way more than video games.

Rome, year 68
I have been in Roma for over a month now, rebuilding my home, and organizing different businesses. However today the city announced the emperor had taken his life after the rebellion of Vindex. Almost no one was supporting Nero’s reign anymore, and the senate started to support Vindex's idea of bringing back the empire that Augustus left, then Nero slashed his neck with a knife and none was able to help him on time. Now the city is a chaos since we do not have an emperor and do not know who will be, some people say Otho, others say Galba, and a few say Vespian or Vitellius, but however, get the power I hope to get it by fair instances because we do not need a civil war; not after Nero’s reign. As well, I hope this massacre ceases. We have been unlawful to Christians, especially after the promise made during the Pax Romana of respecting everyone’s cultures and religious beliefs.
As I walked back to the place I was staying I faced The Colossus, the statue that number he commissioned to make in his likeness. This statue was bigger than twenty men, made out of bronze, and it exhibited Nero with a likeness to Sol. The Colossus exalted the divinity and power that only existed in Nero’s head, and it only reminisces his delusion, a desire for eternal glory. The colossal statue today only represents the irony of how an insecure human tries to hide it by representing himself as a secure man, a powerful man who deserves respect, a ruler who must be obeyed; now it is only a tragic end. I don't know what the future holds for us Romans, I don't know what it holds for the others who did not fit with Nero's ideas. No one knows if better times are there to come, or obscure times. This is the intrigue and the concern that awaits all citizens of the empire. What will happen if a civil war breaks out? Nero, by no means, was the perfect ruler, nor a good emperor ruler under my eyes, but at least he provided us with, somewhat, political stability. I only hope the empire keeps moving forward and looks out for every citizen. Deus nos protegat.

#760: the Colossus of Nero (colossus neronis) was a 30m bronze statue with a history of facelifts. at least 3. the Venerable Bede wrote a poem referencing it in the 7th century or so:
As long as the Colossus stands, Rome will stand,
when the Colossus falls, Rome will fall,
when Rome falls, so falls the world.
spoiler alert: Colossus fell, Rome fell, and the world is soon to follow. (this poem is often mistranslated to reference the Colosseum.) it was highly likely that it had already fallen by the time of this poem, as a result of earthquakes or plunderings, and the bronze salvaged, and the poem was simply... celebrating its significance. all we know now is that it no longer exists, and all that remains is the sad concrete base of the marble pedestal it once stared down from.

Reading The Hidden Oracle: Chapter 35 (SPOILERS)
"What did Nero do--order it online?" Kayla, I don't think USPS has a box big enough to fit that in. Also, I thought it was a statue of Nero. Why does it look like Apollo? Did he just build a giant statue of Apollo, point at it, and say "That's me!" despite all evidence to the contrary?
"Nico and Will were floundering in the lake, apparently having been capsized in the middle of a canoe ride." Okay, so I almost overlooked this bit completely, but I was gently reminded that Apollo tasked these two paddlebrains to warn the camp of an oncoming attack EIGHT CHAPTERS AGO. Instead of anyone being remotely prepared, we fly in to see campers screaming in panic and the two people who were supposed to warn them instead having a little canoe ride IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ATTACK ON CAMP. I can just imagine (the following is not a quote from the book): "There's going to be an attack on camp." "I know. But we've got afternoon plans." "The last two attacks on camp were the Romans and the Battle of the Labyrinth." "Mhm. Perfect time to go canoeing." "Lee died that time." "I'm sure it won't happen again." These are the two scatterbrains hiking into Tartarus headfirst. They're gonna die. They're gonna go canoeing in the Cocytus and die. They're not even real people and I'm never letting them live this down. They're the Canoe Duo now. Canuo.
"every so often a beam of ultraviolet light shot from Athena's helmet like a search lamp, hitting the Colossus's chest" IT- IT ACTUALLY HAS LASERS
"I know I cannot ask you to risk your life for us." Good to see Apollo's done asking for sacrifices. Only took him four thousand years.
"its ghastly neck beard" Ah, so that's how we know it's Nero.
"when the planes were so thick in the air, I literally could not find a safe lane to drive in." It's interesting to note that mortal air traffic actually does affect the sun and moon chariots. Also disturbing to know that the sun and moon in the PJO universe fly so low in the sky.
"I never thought I'd say this about bugs, but I'm going to miss those guys." Oh, so disliking bugs is a common Demeter kid thing.
"still dripping from their swim in the canoe lake." Serves you right. "What's the plan?" You two were supposed to come up with the plan D:<
"You're thinking of Talos. This is not Talos." It better not be! We gotta stop letting all these killer automatons near Nico! They're Hades kid-killers! And judging from Nico's lack of reaction to the mention of Talos, he never even learned how his sister died, so he wouldn't know to stay away from them! Can we all agree to keep Hephaestus's inventions FAR away from Nico from now on?
Unrelated, but it's interesting to note the differences between the OG Talos and the mini one the Titan's Curse gang fought. The mini demo copy had an opening in the sole of its foot while the OG has one in its ankle.

Colosseum, Rome. Giant Roman Monument
Tumblr media
The Colosseum is the most spectacular sight in Rome, a monument to brutal and ruthless force; a giant amphitheater for 50,000 spectators.
Tumblr media
Nothing awakens a historian in us like a great Roman monument . In the Colosseum , gladiators came together in a deadly battle , and the damned fought with wild animals in front of bloodthirsty onlookers . Two millennia later, it continues to subjugate everyone who enters it.
Tumblr media
The Colosseum is really colossal, and this is what impresses most at first (although its name does not come from its size, but from the nearby statue of Nero, the Colossus di Nero). Just walking through the 80 arches through which the audience entered to sit down in a few minutes is difficult; if you think of the other 49,999 spectators who in Roman times would have struggled to find a good seat, all at once, it's amazing. The senior judges and officials were sitting on the lower deck, closer to the action; the citizens remained on the next floor, and the crowd on the upper floor. women, second-class citizens compared to the rabble, had to be content with craning their necks to see something from the cheaper sections on the top floor.
Tumblr media
Despite the intimidating sights, its grandeur and elegance are undeniable. What happened behind the scenes was less glamorous: excursions (mandatory) take the curious to the underground part of the Colosseum, where the filth, violence and obscenity of gladiatorial fights come to life; this is the hypogeum, a vast and complex underground maze of corridors, animal cages and ramps under the stadium floor. Imagine the brutal noise, stench and chaos of wounded people and dead or injured animals, and you will understand how vile and bloody these spectacles must be.
