Baphomet: The Sabbatic Goat
Long post on the history and symbolism of Baphomet taken from my own personal research and BOS !! I also have a similar post for Lucifer in the drafts >:)
Baphomet is an entity that the Knights of Templar were accused of worshipping during the Middle Ages. They are a representation of cosmic balance and an important figure in modern occultism. The first time that the name Baphomet has been seen in any historical or religious text is in a letter from the Templars about the Siege of Antioch describing how they were under attack and heard the attackers calling out to Baphomet.
“As the next day dawned, they called loudly upon Baphometh; and we prayed silently in our hearts to God, then we attacked and forced all of them outside the city walls.“
This letter has been interpreted in three main ways, the Templars worshipped a deity called Baphomet, Baphomet was a mistranslation of another name, or Baphomet was a codename for another pre-existing deity.
Tumblr media
Knights of Templar
The Knights of Templar were a Catholic military order formed in 1120 to protect Christian travellers that wished to visit the Holy Land and not be attacked by bandits and thieves. They began as a mere group of 9 knights and had very few financial resources. Soon enough, the Templars were endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope, and most of Europe. Very quickly, many Europeans began to pour donations and other resources into the order to support them and the fight for the Holy Land, the Pope at the time even granted them special permissions to not abide by any laws or taxes. The Templars seemingly rose to power overnight and answered to nobody besides the Pope, not even the King. They began one of the first banking systems, were one of the first multinational corporations, and began fighting the Muslim armies to protect Jerusalem. But that power didn’t last forever, in 1224 the Muslim armies recaptured Jerusalem and then Acre in 1291, the Templars lost the Holy Land and their support began to dwindle. In 1303, the Templars were relocated to Paris and rumours began floating around of them worshipping the devil - this is possibly in relation to an ex-Templar member who was falsely accused. King Philip IV of France, who owed the Templars a great deal of money, became personally interested in these claims and used it as an opportunity to dismantle the order. These claims were widely regarded as false but on October 13th, 1307 (Friday 13th *spooky noises*), the King ordered for all the Templars in France to be seized and “interrogated” for claims of heresy, false idolatry, and fraud. Despite there being 0 evidence of these claims being true, the Templars were brutally tortured and under so “confessed” to spitting on the cross, worshipping idols, engaging in homosexual acts with other members, financial corruption, heresy, and denial of Christ. On November 22, 1307, the Pope ordered for all the Templars to be seized and go through trials following the King's threats of military action, during which most of the Templars rebuked their confessions and attempted to defend themselves. However, King Philip IV was having none of this and decided to go ahead and take action against the Templars in Paris by burning them at the stake around 1310. The King then threatened military action against the Pope once more and the Knights of Templar were dissolved in 1312, though two leaders of the order were burned alive on March 18, 1314, under the order of the King.
Despite the Templars ‘technically’ confessing to false idolatry, there was really no evidence. These confessions were all given under the force of torture and share major similarities to the forced confessions given by other enemies of King Philip IV so they shouldn't be taken with any real validity. They were accused of worshipping a mummified head and idol called Baphomet. The ‘Baphomet’ of the Templars is not the same Baphomet that we know of today and was believed to have been represented by a mummified head, cat, or demon, but there was no real evidence of this false idolatry existing beyond the letter mentioned at the beginning. In September 2001, the Chiron Parchment was found in the Vatican Archives which is a document from August 1308 detailing how the Pope cleared all the Templars of their convictions before dissolving the order in 1312. Today, the Templars are recognized by the Catholic Church as being falsely accused and convicted. So what was that letter really detailing?

The Origins of Baphomet
(CW: Islamophobia)
The first recorded mention of Baphomet is in a letter from Anselm of Ribemont about the Seige of Antioch in 1098 -
“As the next day dawned, they (inhabitants of Antioch) called loudly upon Baphometh; and we prayed silently in our hearts to God, then we attacked and forced all of them outside the city walls.“
The Templars were accused of worshipping a deity called Baphomet and the name came up many times in the confessions given by the Templars under torture. Scholars have determined that Baphomet is a corruption of the French word muhamet, which is the French version of the name Muhammad - the Muslim prophet.
During the Middle Ages, Europe deemed Muslims as a threat to the Church and believed that they were Pagans that worshipped Muhammad instead of God. Muhammad was believed to be possessed by demons or Satan himself. And because of this, “muhamet” was translated to mammet in English, meaning a false idol or god, a name used by many Christian European writers at the time to refer to Muhammad. Many stories were written at the time about Muhammad and Muslims, without explicitly stating it, depicting Muhammad as a wise person led astray by Satan to spread false prophecies and convince Muslims to follow him against the word of God. In Dante’s Inferno, the divine comedy written in the 14th century, 'Mohamet' is seen in the eighth circle of Hell and is being punished for schism (division of the Church) and causing discord. This is in reference to Muhammad and Muslims dividing Christians by "tricking" people into converting to Islam, a religion considered Pagan that worshiped a false idol. The Song of Roland, written in the 11th century, depicts Muslims worshipping ‘Mahumet’ and various idols like Lucifer and Apollyon all attributed to “Termagant”. Termagant is a name attributed to the "deity" that Christians believed Muslims worshipped and was often used in literature as a villainous god character to inaccurately portray Muhammad and Muslims as evil.
Some have interpreted this to mean that the Templars were converting to Islam or incorporating Muslim beliefs in their religious practices, but the Templars were devout Christians that remained devoted up until their deaths, even asking to be bound in a praying position or facing the Notre Dame as they were burned alive by people of their very own faith. They wouldn’t integrate beliefs from their enemies into their own beliefs. The accusations of the Templars worshipping Muhammad likely originated from training that they went through to prepare themselves for the situation where they were kidnapped by Muslim armies and forced to worship him, since they believed Muslims worshipped Muhammad.
“The word first turned up in a letter of 1098 written by a certain Anselm of Ribebont, who fought in the First Crusade. Describing the lead-up to a clash with Muslim soldiers, he wrote how ‘as the next day dawned, they called loudly upon Baphometh’ and we prayed silently in our hearts to God’. The context of the word here, along with other evidence from the First Crusade, heavily suggests that ‘Baphomet’ was simply a corrupted version of ‘Mahomet’, an old French word referring to Muhammad, the founder of Islam.” “Many scholars subscribe to the theory that such stories weren’t merely false confessions used to smear the Templars. Instead, the Templars may have been ordered to renounce Christ, worship idols and pledge allegiance to Muhammad as a kind of POW [prisoner of war] training, simulating the ordeals they might have to endure if they were captured by the enemy.” - Were the Templars Secret Devil Worshippers? (history.co.uk)
Gnostic Templars?
While these explanations are accepted by most scholars, there are quite a few people that believe the Templars were up to something else. Some believe that Baphomet is a codename for a much older deity and that the Templars were Gnostics. Gnosticism is a Christian heretical movement, and that’s all I can really say in fear of completely misrepresenting the belief. If you’re interested in Gnosticism and want to find out more about what it is, I suggest you watch “What is Gnosticism?” by Let’s Talk Religion and Religion for Breakfast on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ockwMVE7PgM) and if you’d like to learn more beyond that I suggest ESOTERICA’s Gnosticism playlist (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7YhueEp0Mo&list=PLZ__PGORcBKyc7rph_EpAUszuUwcPsz0T)!
Hugh J. Schonfield, a biblical scholar and religious writer, claimed in his work The Essene Odyssey that the word “Baphomet” was created by the Templars with the Atbash substitution cypher which is a cypher that substitutes the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet for the last, second for the second last, and so on. He translated Baphomet with this cypher: ""Baphomet" rendered in Hebrew is בפומת‎ (bpwmt); interpreted using Atbash, it becomes שופיא‎ (šwpy‘, "Shofya'"). This word comes out to the Greek word “sophia” meaning wisdom." This lead him to believe that the Templars were early Gnostics and worshipped the Gnostic divine being Sophia. Sophia is a divine feminine figure in Gnosticism who is considered to be the mother of the universe, though not the creator, and represents divine wisdom and the feminine soul. This, and in addition, the Templars using symbols similar to Gnostic symbols, has led many to believe that the Templars were Gnostics. While they might've used the symbols and even possibly subscribed to similar philosophies, they most likely weren't really Gnostics and a lot of these claims likely originate from when people were spreading rumours to disband them. Though, at the time, there were the Cathars who were actually Gnostics and some say that the two groups were intertwined in some way but we can never be really sure.
There isn't much evidence to support these theories but the idea that the Templars were Gnostics or Freemasons is something that many people believe to this day with multiple TV series dedicated to finding proof of their hidden secrets. There are many, many actually insane and unfound conspiracy theories relating to the Templars, even some attempting to connect them to 9/11 through incredible reaches with numerology.
"Each World Trade Center Tower had 110 floors, a multiple of 11. One of them was struck by flight 11, which had 11 crew members, and so on. […] The order of the Knights Templar was recognized by the Vatican in the year 1118, whose integers add up to 11. There are 883 years between that date and 2001, and the sum of those numbers, 19, is the same as the number of hijackers. The number 19 allowed Hoagland to introduce the Koranic numerology of Rashad Khalifa, in which it is central. By the time Hoagland finished, the events of September 11 were revealed to be an attack by none other than the Islamic Order of Assassins on the Knights Templar and the Masons!" - A Culture of Conspiracy: Apocalyptic Visions in Contemporary America by Michael Barkun (2013)
While the Knights of Templar were an extremely powerful and wealthy military and religious force, they were not a secret mastermind organization in possession of the mummified head of Jesus Christ and the Ark of Covenant who somehow exist to this day. They were wealthy bankers and a powerful religious military order, still important figures in history, but not the founders of the Illuminati or the targets of 9/11.

Baphomet in Occult Symbolism
Despite a lot of these ‘secret occult society’ claims being largely unfounded, Baphomet has earned a place in occultism as an important symbolic being of cosmic balance. How did the supposed false idol worshipped by the Templars become such a prevalent symbol in modern occultism and Satanism?
Tumblr media
In the descriptions of who or what the Templars were worshipping, they almost always were mummified heads or severed heads. So how did we get to the half-goat, half-man being we know today? The most popular depiction of Baphomet, and the first real depiction, was published in the work Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie (Dogma and Ritual of High Magic) by Éliphas Lévi published in two volumes in 1854 and 1856 which were translated by A.E. Waite as Transcendental Magic, its Doctrine and Ritual in 1896. In these works, Lévi discussed magick as a mediating force between religion and science and refers to it as an esoteric science. Lévi was a French occultist who was a devoted Roman Catholic priest until his 40s when he began teaching ceremonial magick, for a brief period of time he was a Freemason as well. He created the imagery for Baphomet as a symbol of ultimate balance, it’s believed he was inspired by the deity Pan and aspects of Kabbalah. The duality of humans is represented by the androgyny of Baphomet having one female and one male breast, the hands are positioned in a pose representing the Hermetic saying “As Above, So Below”, and the Latin words solve and coagula meaning dissolve and coagulate. Baphomet represents everything in balance with one another, the necessity of polarity.
“The goat on the frontispiece carries the sign of the pentagram on the forehead, with one point at the top, a symbol of light, his two hands forming the sign of Hermeticism (as above, so below), the one pointing up to the white moon of Chesed, the other pointing down to the black one of Geburah. This sign expresses the perfect harmony of mercy with justice. His one arm is female, the other male like the ones of the androgyn of Khunrath, the attributes of which we had to unite with those of our goat because he is one and the same symbol. The flame of intelligence shining between his horns is the magic light of the universal balance, the image of the soul elevated above matter, as the flame, whilst being tied to matter, shines above it. The ugly beast’s head expresses the horror of the sinner, whose materially acting, solely responsible part has to bear the punishment exclusively; because the soul is insensitive according to its nature and can only suffer when it materializes. The rod standing instead of genitals symbolizes eternal life, the body covered with scales the water, the semi-circle above it the atmosphere, the feathers following above the volatile. Humanity is represented by the two breasts and the androgyn arms of this sphinx of the occult sciences.” - Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie by Éliphas Lévi
Lévi’s Baphomet has nothing to do with the Baphomet of the Templars or Muhammad, though, it’s theorized he might’ve been inspired to use the name by the mythical stories of Gnostic and Freemason Templars.
Baphomet has become a very popular symbol in occultism, but to the general public, many still believe it to represent Satan. Satan has been associated with goat imagery for a very long time, originating from the scapegoat (Azazel) ritual of Yom Kippur, but more modernly due to The Church of Satan adopting “The Sigil of Baphomet”. The original pentagram with a goat head comes from the work La Clef de la Magie Noire (The Key to Black Magic) by Stanislas de Guaita in 1897 which was inspired by Lévi. Guaita was a French poet and occultist who wrote about Christian Kabbalah and founded the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose-Cross. In his work, La Clef de la Magie Noire was the drawing of an upside-down pentagram with a goat's head and an upright pentagram with a human. Guita explains that the first upright pentagram represents the “white-light” symbol of man “voluntarily rejoined in the providential plan” and goes on to explain the down-turned pentagram -
“But oriented in the opposite direction, the pentagrammatic Star is nothing more than a symbol of iniquity, perdition, blasphemy: its two points in the air become the horns of the foul Goat threatening Heaven, and whose head is framed with the stellar pentacle, with its low ears in the side branches, and its beard in disorder in the single lower point. [Page 386]”
Tumblr media
Or simply put, upright representing spirit over matter (holiness) and upside-down representing matter over spirit (evil). These symbols became popularly used in occultism, Hermeticism, and even some Freemasonry books. It appeared in a book titled A Pictorial History of Magic and the Supernatural by Maurice Bessy published in 1964 in a chapter called “Satanic Sciences”, the cover is the bottom image without the names of Samael and Lilith.
Anton LaVey is the founder of The Church of Satan and writer of The Satanic Bible. LaVey came across Bessy’s book during his research of the LHP and found the symbol very “striking” and believed it fully embodied the principles of Satanism. In the early days of the Church, they used the symbol on their membership cards and some other merchandise. During the writing of The Satanic Bible, LaVey decided that there should be a new version of the symbol created exclusively for The Church of Satan, changes made (stated by the Church) were “The pentagram was made geometrically precise, the two circles perfect, the Hebrew characters were distorted to make them look more sharply serpentine and “corrupted with time,” while the goat face was redrawn with particular attention paid toward the eyes.” This symbol was named ‘The Sigil of Baphomet” and used on the cover of The Satanic Bible (1969) and the Church’s LP The Satanic Mass (1968), then copyrighted in 1983. The Church of Satan also recognizes that the sigil has nothing to do with the ‘Baphomet’ of the Templars.
Tumblr media
The Satanic Temple (TST) also uses Baphomet as a symbol in their logo and their famously controversial Statue of Baphomet. TST is a nontheistic church founded in 2012 and doesn’t believe in the supernatural existence of Lucifer or any other divine being, they focus mostly on activism and promoting respect and autonomy for all. They are a very controversial organization and frequently end up in the news when opposing Christian and Conservative efforts of taking away autonomy or pushing religion on people. In 2012, Oklahoma’s state capitol in Oklahoma City installed a statue of the 10 commandments, a very clear violation of Oklahoma’s State Constitution stating that religious monuments were not allowed on public (let alone government) property but since Rep. Mike Ritze paid for it, it was considered a “donation”. This caused a lot of controversies and angered many people and groups across the US, enough for someone to ram their car into it and destroy it in 2014. TST was very outspoken about their disagreements with the monument and said that they would donate their own statue to be placed outside the capitol and began to commission the Statue of Baphomet, though after the monument was destroyed TST said that if it wasn’t rebuilt then they wouldn’t go through with their plans. Alas, Rep. Ritze paid for it to be rebuilt. But, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled on the case Prescott v. Capitol Preservation Commission in June 2015, stating that the religious monument was a violation of the OK constitution’s ban on the use of public property to support religion, many people were enraged by this ruling but the 10 Commandments monument was ultimately removed from the Capitol’s property in October 2015. Lucien Greaves, the co-founder of TST, told the Washington Post “The entire point of our effort was to offer a monument that would complement and contrast the Ten Commandments, reaffirming that we live in a nation that respects plurality, a nation that refuses to allow a single viewpoint to co-opt the power and authority of government institutions.” A similar situation happened at the Arkansas State Capitol, they installed an uncanny 10 Commandments monument on June 27, 2017, which was destroyed within 24 hours (by the same person as OKC) but was rebuilt on April 26, 2018. This, again, caused outrage across the US and TST tried to donate their Statue of Baphomet but it was blocked by the courts. There is still an ongoing lawsuit with Arkansas and the American Civil Liberty Union as Republican state Sen. Jason Rapert sponsored a bill protecting the monument. The Statue of Baphomet is now located at The Satanic Temple in Salem, Massachusetts.
Tumblr media

Another very common depiction of Baphomet in the occult world is The Devil tarot card in Rider-Waite’s tarot released in 1909. The Devil card is the 15th Major Arcana card and depicts a horned goat-man inspired by Lévi’s Baphomet, he sits atop an altar with a woman and man on either of his sides and his arms are positioned in the “As above, So below” pose. This card represents the shadow self, sexuality, ridding oneself of masters, and exploring taboo topics. It can mean you’ve lost yourself in self-restriction or addictive habits, adversely it can mean you are your own master or indulging in natural pleasures as you see fit. There’s importance in balance and polarity.
Tumblr media
Baphomet is still commonly used as a symbol of cosmic balance but has evolved into a being that many people work with and worship, both as a symbolic being and a deity. Many transgender and genderqueer/gnc individuals embrace Baphomet as a symbol of androgyny, Satanists use Baphomet as a symbol of personal autonomy and indulgence in human pleasures, and occultists continue to use them as a symbol of cosmic balance. Baphomet has history and rich symbolic meaning that shouldn’t be stripped from them. It’s not as easy to find resources for Baphomet as it is for most other deities and I see a lot of misinformation on social media so I think it’s important to share the information I find for anyone that may be seeking it. If you have any questions, notice any mistakes, or see that I forgot something then let me know !! Some resources are listed below and make sure to do your own research if you’re interested in this topic. “I would fall for you.” Aziraphale whispered, almost as if he feared that if he spoke too loudly the Almighty would strike him down where he stood. He didn’t find himself minding. No punishment could be greater than being apart from Crowley.
“Angel,” Crowley muttered, desperately.
“In some ways I already have.”

Aurelius Augustinus Hipponensis (Latin) Place of birth: Thagaste, Numidia, Cirtensis; western Roman Empire -- modern day Souk Ahras, Algeria Born: November 13, 354 Canonized: Eastern Orthodoxy, Catholicism (and other sects of Christianity); in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII Feast Day: August 28 ; which is to believed to be the day he died.   -- In greek and russian orthodox chruch’s his feast day is celebrated june 15th
Patron Saint of:  Brewers, Printers, Theologians, sore eyes, and a number of cities and dioceses.  Most Important works: City of God, On Christian Doctrine, Confessions.  **While still being canonized as a Saint in Eastern Orthodoxy, and respected as a Church father, there is some controversy on him in the Orthodox faith.  Augustine, through his confessions talks about his “passions” of women, drinking, partying, and slowly coming to Christ and finally being baptized in 386, where he developed his own approach to theology and philosophy. His most notable contributions for doctrine where about “ORIGIONAL SIN” . The Eastern Orthodox believe that while everyone bears the CONSEQUENCES of the first sin, Only Adam and Eve are GUILTY of that sin.
Augustine’s most controversial doctrine associated with him is “Filioque” which the EO Church has rejected. Though considered to be mistaken on some points, he is still highly respected, and considered a saint. Many EO Fathers, including Saint Gregory Palamas were inspired by him.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT CLARE OF MONTEFALCO (Saint Clare of the Cross) The Patron of Heart Diseases and Cardiovascular Problems Feast Day: August 17
In order to put simply, Clare was recognized as an Augustinian rather than a Franciscan.
Clare was born in Montefalco, in Umbria, likely in the year 1268. She was born into a well-to-do family, the daughter of Damiano and Iacopa Vengente. Her father, Damiano, had built a hermitage within the town of Montefalco. Clare's older sister Joan (Giovanna in Italian) and her friend Andreola lived as Franciscan tertiaries in that hermitage as part of the Secular Third Order of St. Francis. In 1274, when Clare was six years of age, the Bishop of Spoleto permitted Joan to receive more sisters, and it was at this time that Clare joined the Third Order of St. Francis (Secular), moving into the hermitage and adopting the Franciscan habit.
In 1278, the community had grown sufficiently large that they had to build a larger hermitage farther from town.
In 1290, Clare, her sister Joan, and their companions sought to enter the monastic life in a more strict sense, and they made application to the Bishop of Spoleto. As the Third Order of St. Francis (Regular) was not yet established, the bishop established their monastery adjacent to the church of Sant'Illuminata in Montefalco according to the Rule of St. Augustine. Clare made her vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and became an Augustinian nun. Her sister Joan was elected as the first abbess, and their small hermitage (built and funded by their father) was dedicated as a monastery. On November 22, 1291, Joan died, after which Clare was elected abbess. She was initially reluctant to accept her position, but did so after the intervention of the Bishop of Spoleto.
1294 was a decisive year in Clare's spiritual life. During the celebration of the Epiphany, after making a general confession in front of all her fellow nuns, she fell into ecstasy and remained in that state for several weeks. Since she was unable even to eat during this period, the other nuns sustained Clare's life by feeding her sugar water. During this time, Clare reported having a vision in which she saw herself being judged in front of God.
Clare also reported having a vision of Jesus dressed as a poor traveler. She described his countenance as being overwhelmed by the weight of the cross and his body as showing signs of fatigue.
During the vision, Clare knelt in front of him, and whilst trying to stop him she asked, 'My Lord, where art Thou going?'
Jesus answered her: 'I have looked all over the world for a strong place where to plant this Cross firmly, and I have not found any.'
After she reached for the cross, making known her desire to help him carry it, He said to her: 'Clare, I have found a place for My cross here. I have finally found someone to whom I can trust Mine cross,' and he implanted it in her heart.
Clare took her belief in this vision seriously. The rest of her years were spent in pain and suffering, yet she continued to joyfully serve as abbess, teacher, mother and spiritual directress of her nuns. While Clare's reputation for holiness and wisdom attracted visitors to the Monastery of the Holy Cross, she proved to be worldly-wise and canny in the way she governed her monastery. She was careful not to disrupt the communal harmony and the necessary day-to-day management of the monastery's domestic affairs.
In 1303, Clare was able to build a church in Montefalco which would not only serve as a chapel for the nuns, but also as a church for the town. The first stone was blessed by the Bishop of Spoleto on June 24, and that day the church was dedicated to the Holy Cross (Santa Croce); the remnant portion of that small church comprises the frescoed Chapel of Santa Croce connected to the larger Santa Chiara in Montefalco.
Clare had served as abbess for sixteen years. By August 1308, she had become so ill that she was bedridden. On August 15, she asked to receive Extreme Unction, and on the next day she sent for her brother to come to the monastery. Clare made her last confession on August 17, and died at about 40 years of age in the convent on August 18.
Immediately following Clare's death her heart was removed from her body, and upon inspection it was reported that symbols of Christ's passion, a crucifix and a scourge, were found within her heart.
Other historians report that an 'autopsy' was conducted and a small crucifix was found in her heart and three gallstones were found in her gallbladder, which were taken as a symbol of the Holy Trinity.
The crucifix reportedly found within Clare's heart is about the size of a thumb. Christ's head leans slightly towards the right arm of the crucifix, and his body is white, except for the 'tiny aperture in the right side which is a livid reddish color.' The scourge and crown of thorns are apparently formed by whitish nerve fibers, and the three nails are formed of a dark fibrous tissue.
The body of Clare is now reduced to bones. A statue of her body is on display to pilgrims in the crypt of the Basilica of St. Clare in Montefalco in a glass sarcophagus; the bones are on display in the rear of the sarcophagus but can only be seen by nuns who have access to the rear of the crypt. Her heart is displayed for veneration at the same church.
The canonization process was initiated in 1328, but it was not until April 13, 1737, that Clare was beatified by Pope Clement XII. On December 8, 1881, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Leo XIII canonized Clare as Saint Clare of Montefalco at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome.

Middle of the night in Gotham. My hands glow red as I swiftly catch Damian from where he fell, with my power's and land him safely onto the ground. He stands next to me as more assassin's approach. I speeded taking each of their swords and take them out one by one. I return to my little Robin. He smirked to me, just like his father.
"tt must you take all the fun"
"sorry kiddo" I chuckled
I feel the ground shake gently and hear an explosion. Damian and I look the left side of black mask building up in flames.
"tt Hood must be home"
"Robin" I scold "don't be so quick to judge"
He rolls his eyes. I take my son into my arms and speed up the building onto the floor where the explosion had erupted. The debris settled with a few small flames. I let Robin down, he folds his arms
"still humiliating" he scoffed
I then see Spoiler aka Stephanie, Batgirl aka Cassandra and Red-Robin aka Tim.
"kid's you're here, Oracle send you?" I asked, I then hear on my intercom
-"well of course! They'd be lost without me... At least they didn't go to the wrong building this time" Barbara said
"you got that right" I replied to her with a chuckle
Steph softly scoffed "ok firstly that was a honest mistake and secondly, bout time you showed up. I think this has some-" I hear a voice cut her off
"don't even think about blaming me for this glorious shit" Jason said entering the room, he gently nodded to me "hey Ma"
"good to see you back Jaybird" I replied with a soft smile
Grayson suddenly jumps inside from his grappling hook.
"the gang back together and nobody called the boy wonder" Grayson exclaimed
"it took one explosion and were all here.." Jason groaned under his breath.
"oh don't pretend you didn't miss us" I told my son with a smile "does anyone even know what's going on here? Who started the explosion, or who wants Black Mask dead" I asked the room silent.
I use my power to remove the flames and debris with the fallen bricks. Black mask was revealed under a few tons of bricks. His head bleeding. He's long gone. I then kneel finding a cigarette holder....
"that bastard Penguin has something in for black mask" Jason said a bit bewildered
"well he was here to see is handy work" I look further seeing fresh tracks left by his "we just missed him.. Has anyone been in contact with Bat's?" I then hear my intercom, Batman. I touch my intercom "don't tell me, you have him tied up and he's confessed everything"
-"come see me on southwest side. Three buildings next to yours"
Bruce's P. O. V
With my back against the roof, I gently run my hands down my wife's face. She softly smiled our legs and fingers intertwined. I kiss my wife's soft forehead. With every inch of her body was a intense feeling of security.. Strength.. Love... Admiration. She places her hands on my shoulders. I kiss her deeply, she deepened the kiss. I hear her phone I reach over for it and hold it. She parts from my lips. If it's Stark, he's a dead man. She holds my hand with held her phone.
"five minutes" I demanded
She smirked "fine I can handle that, but no longer than that.. I know how much you like a second round"
Five minutes later.. My wife takes her phone and answers. I kiss her neck.
Y/N's P. O. V
I answered Tony on the phone "Stark.." my tone evident that, I'm annoyed.
-"hi Mrs. Wayne Mr Stark is busy right now and wanted me to answer.. so sorry to interrupt you, but every single Avenger as been requested to the base right now" I'd recognize that innocent voice anywhere
"oh hi Peter sorry about the tone kid. I'll be there asap"
I hang up, Bruce lays on his side gazing at me.
"anything I need to know about?"
"Peter answered so.. No details" I chuckled "I'll be fine"
He grunted, I speed and kiss him deeply. I then speed in my red widow uniform, that my children have never seen, to the base in New York. The base next to A. J. T. That stood respectfully stood for all, Avenger, Justice League and Titans members. With the exception of any helping hand's. The base was three rectangle buildings, and then the main building for all three organizations. The furthest left was Titans, then the middle is the Justice League and on the right stood the Avengers building. While the main building was in front that could hold up to over a thousand people. I step into the avengers building. Countless people were going different directions. Something is wrong. Where is my team?
"Red Widow, you are needed in the main building" Happy told me from the desk with a confusing tone "you know the big one in front" he stated obviously
What? "STARK!!!" I growled "I'm going to kill your boss!" I exclaimed, he's been joking about my kid's eventually finding out for years.
"you're paying for the funeral!" he said
I run to the main building only seeing members from the Avengers and a few Titans. I step inside. Little by little more members of each group came.
"meine Schwester.. Wo bist du gewesen?"
I turn seeing my first friend.. Natasha Romanoff. She had a soft smile with folded arms. I smile.
"Du wurdest sehr vermisst Schwester"
We both embrace tightly. The bond we formed together was unbreakable. We took care of each other. The red room was eery.. Fear for my own life and that of my sister's.
"Rote Witwe" Bucky said with a smile
My trainer and my sister's lover. The three of us went through hell together. We stood awaiting for the important news. Then my family arrived. Bruce smirked to me knowing my secrets are going to come to surface. Shit. I then watch Tony aka Ironman aka about to be Deadman. He steps onto the platform with the leader of the justice league, Jeff aka Black Lighting. The meeting was discuss a possible threat from Darkseid. First I feel Cassandra's gaze to me. I completely avoid eye contact. I know they all read the Red Widow files.. My real name was classified. I don't want them to know what I went through. I use my telekinesis.
"it's mom!" she whispered to them
Grayson gasped his mouth agape. Then they all looked at me. I take a deep breath feeling their eyes on me without looking at them. Grayson felt completely astonished and with worry for how I feel about my sad past. Jason feels shocked, admired, mixed with sympathy and he loved me no different. Barbara felt that I was someone she always aspire to be and what happened to me only made me more stronger. Damian felt admired and felt I was stronger than he originally thought, which he thought was impossible. Tim hated that I was brought up through pain, he wished that I was always happy but he admired I'm strong, he wish he could too. Stephanie was overwhelmed with joy thinking I was a bad ass, amazing, Soo inspiring and she wish I could have had a better life before. Cassandra felt I was the strongest person in the world not only physically but mentally and I gave her hope that she could be a good person too. I feared they'd think less of me.. How foolish was I. I was a wrong when I thought that I would never find love. I was wrong to believe I'd never be a mother. It never felt so good to be wrong.
First translation.. my sister where have you been
Second translation.. you are missed here sister
Third translation.. Red Widow

After we flipped
"Some of us get dipped in flat, some in satin, some in gloss; but every once in a while, you find someone who's iridescent, and once you do, nothing will ever compare."

"Bryce!" a voice called from the top of an oak tree.
"You do know that slacks are incredibly inconvenient to climb in right," he said as he progressively made his way up the tree. The higher he got; the breeze got colder. Zephyrus had blown a kiss, tinging his cheeks the same way a lover does. He reached for the last branch, hoisting himself to the branch Juli was sitting on. It was truly incredible how she managed to climb in a full-length dress, but to be fair it didn't really come as a surprise to him. It was Juliana Baker after all, his Juli.
"Took you long enough, now come" she scooted over, bundling up her dress to make room for him. He settled beside her, his shoulders just a hair breath away from hers, fingers just a shy movement away. Every part of his body was just screaming to just move closer but he refrained.
"Isn't the view wonderful Bryce?" Juli stared at the crimson sky. Hues of purple, orange and pink melded together, like waves crashing into each other and forming a beautiful symphony that painted the sky. The meadow with overgrown grass stretched to the horizon, the crisp green blended into the sky. The difference was stark, but somehow it worked. The coolness of the grass and the warmth of the sky, just like him and Juli
"It's a shame I've never gotten the chance to climb the sycamore tree," Bryce said. Juli swatted his arm and shot him with her death glare.
"I wonder why" she crossed her arm.
"oh come on, this my billionth time apologizing Juli"
"You know I hold grudges Bryce" Juli's lips curled into a knowing smirk, earning a groan from Bryce.
"Alright, alright I apologize for being a big jerk and it was all my fault" he confessed, holding up his hands defensively and Juli's laugh reverberated in the air and echoed in Bryce's mind. He loves it when she smiles, the dimples forming right by her lips drew even more attention to her lips. Oh how he wished he could kiss her right now, but he couldn't ,not now.
"You're forgiven" She had moved closer to him now, shoulders touching. All of him was hyperaware, how her warmth twisted his stomach into knots and how the part where Juli had touched was on fire. You know how people have said there are infinite possibilities, maybe in one of those possibilities he would have still hated Juli or Juli had not forgiven him for his mistakes. Out of those infinites, he was here with Juli, sitting on an oak tree instead of heading to prom like they were supposed to. He could have been dancing with her right now, under the dimmed lights, swaying slowly to songs. It may have been nice to finally hold her close, but he wouldn't trade it for what he had right now.
Silence. Juli once said that silence seemed to connect people in ways words never could. He used to disagree but he gets it now. As they both sat silently on the oak tree admiring the view, Juli scooped up his hands and held it tight, her soft fingers caressing the rough bit on his palm.
Saying that he might explode was an understatement, he was breaking. Like an old abandoned dam,his emotions and feelings were leaking and he didn't know how long he could suppress them.
Juli had laid on his shoulders, fingers intertwined, quietly savouring the glimmering stars in the vast darkness of the sky. One particular shone brighter amongst the others. Sirius.Juli had mentioned on one summer night while they were sitting on this very tree. She was insistent on watching the meteor shower with him that night.
✄┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
"It's a once in a lifetime thing Bryce, you have to see it" she had said, and of course he obliged.
That night felt exactly the same, the cool breeze blowing on their cheeks, and Juli was in the exact same spot. The combination of the two was almost paradisiacal to him, a sinful delight.
Before the meteor appeared, she had eagerly told him stories about stars. Stories of deities and legends she had shared, but one particular stuck out to him. The Indians had believed that the star, Sirius was the embodiment of Svana, a dog who Prince Yudhisthira had cherished. They were set on finding the gates of heaven and they did, yet the gatekeeper, Indra, had denied the entrance of Svana. He had mentioned that it was Svana was the only reason he had not forsaken the journey. After hearing what he had wanted Indra let the pair enter and the rest was history. He liked the story, everyone would have wanted someone like that. Someone would stick by you through the ugly and the glory, to never give up on you.
Then the meteor shower started, a single streak of light cut through the blanket of darkness, paving a path for the rest. The rest followed and illuminated the night sky. The silvery shine had gripped itself onto Juli, it highlighted the best features on her and also his inevitable feelings for her.
"Come on Bryce make a wish" she clasped her hands together, wishing on each of the burning stars.
He was never one to believe in stuff like that, yet he still clasped his hands together, silently hoping that the stars would bring him someone that would accompany him beyond his lifetime and be encapsulated in the sky together for eternity, just like Yudhisthira and Svana.
✄┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
For a moment everything seemed perfect, Juli sitting comfortably by him, his mind swelled with euphoria. Then it happened, out of the infinite possibilities it happened. The stars had granted his wish.
She turned to him, looking at him with those dazzling eyes of hers.
"you know Bryce, I think I love you,".
Then he broke. It was a whirlwind, his thoughts were muddled as he cupped Juli's face in his hands. His eyes glossed over with such fondness and tenderness.
"I love you too Juli. Incandescently"
He had always thought there would be fireworks during his first kiss, it wasn't far from the truth but it was beyond fireworks. There was a sense of peace that lingered, peace knowing she had felt the same way, peace knowing that she would be his. When they broke apart, his lips stained by hers and they held each other gazes for what felt like forever.
For all the ten years they had known and hated each other for, this was the closest they've ever been. Their breaths mingled as they quietly observed each other. Again silence had connected them the way words could never, it had allowed him to notice the little things about her he had never noticed before; like how the freckles on her face resemble the stars above them, scattered and beautiful. Her eyes were just as beautiful up close, so full of curiosity and life. Each little part he noticed about her made him fell a little more even if he thought he couldn't fall for her more than he already did.
Sitting here now entangled in each other's arms, they would have never guessed this would be their ending, or more so their beginning.
"You still remember what they said back in elementary school?" She broke the silence.
" Bryce and Juli sitting in the tree k-i-s-s-i-n-g" he replied, a smile etched on his face so wide you could see from a mile away. Juli giggled as Bryce looked at her adoringly.
"I guess they weren't lying after all," he said before pulling her into another kiss. As they exchange sweet nothings to each other, he could proudly admit that she was his and he was hers.
Authors note:

Clement V and the Knights Templar
I started this infatuation with the history of the Popes with a fascination for the Middle ages. But I was always most intrigued by the non-secular parts of that period. Especially monks and all that. Again, no idea where I got that from ;-). I figured out that it must have been the romantic idea of it all: quiet, solitude, focus, profound, spiritual, scholarly, etc. Celibacy, not so much an attractive feature. Never understood that one. Anyway, through the monks I discovered the Knights Templar and I was enthralled! So I read their stories and history and their unfortunate demise. Thought about that for a long time. When I visited the Notre Dame in Paris years ago, where the leaders of the Knights were sentenced and burned at the stake, I could still sense their misery. Be prepared for a long one.
The responsible one
Who was responsible for that misery? Well that was the King of France Philip IV or Philip the Fair (1268 - 1314) and Bertrand de Goth, also known as Clement V (1264 - 1314). I mentioned Clement earlier when I wrote about the Avignon period. Clement was Philips puppet, but I'm not sure that excuses him from his responsibility for his actions and the following atrocities against the Knights. But why eradicate them? The answer to that question is quite trivial: for their money!
Who were the Knights?
The Knights were very popular for a while, being champions of the crusades in the middle-east (the Holy Land). The order was founded in Jerusalem. So here was a religious order with a license to kill. Monks and murder; contradiction right? Not according to Bernard of Clairvaux (famous Benedictine monk), he was clear about this: monks could be knights and were entitled to receive absolution for their sins. They were soldiers of God. The Knights became rich because of the rights pope Honorius III gave them in 1129 to collect 10 percent of their possessions (i.e. land and harvest thereof). Their privileges, gifts and tax-reductions were also acknowledged by pope Innocent II in 1139. They became skilled bankers who provided loans to influential people like the pope himself, i.e. Alexander III was the first one who used them for financial support.
What went before
The misery actually started with Pope Boniface VIII (Benedetto Caetani) [1294–1303] who became involved in a power struggle with Philip IV. They were squabbling about taxes: secular leaders couldn't ask clergymen to pay taxes, according to the pope, well Philip was not amused by that. Philip was fed up and became very aggressive towards the pope who fled his wrath and ultimately died because of the aggression towards him. This marked the end of the leading position of the pope in the world. Philip showed who was boss; the secular leaders of the world, the kings!
The inquisition
During the 13th century the inquisition was brought to life. This was an institution where both church and state played a part; the church needed to convict suspects of heresy and the state imposed penalties for the crime. The inquisition was a very dangerous phenomena. The church was always right, if you were a suspect you didn't stand a chance. You were on your own and the only way to escape punishment was to acknowledge the crimes of which you were accused. Usually this was forced by torture. When the heretic recanted his earlier confession there was only one appropriate punishment: the stake.
Beginning of the End
So Philip had momentum to do as he pleased, including the persecution of a religious order like the Knights Templar. He was always in need of money as a consequence of high military expenditure and a inherited debt from his father. And he thought that if he could persecute the pope, he could also persecute a religious order where there was a lot of money to be gained. And so, on September 14th in the year 1307 Philip ordered the arrest of the French Knights, which took place on Friday the 13th (probably the source of the superstition for that date). About 2000 members were arrested, including the Knights Grand Master Jacques de Molay. The foundation for this arrest was based on the information that he got from reliable sources about the order which, according to these sources, was in fact a heretic organisation. It was said that the members renounced Christ, spit on his image, and kissed each other on several body parts. They also had intercourse with each other and worshiped an idol. Well! In this way, he was preparing his case against the Knights.
Clement
Where is Clement in all this? Well he was furious about the shenanigans of the King and he let him know that he was totally out of line. In 1308 Clement considered the allegations as being rumors and told Philip he didn't believe it. Clement and Jacques de Molay must have thought that the whole thing would fade out. But Philip was in a hurry for he needed money. He wanted to move fast and he didn't trust Clement to do his bidding. But he needed a clergyman on the case because heresy was church business. He got a minister (William d'Imbert) who was a member of the Dominican order to execute the arrest. Later he became the French inquisitor. Clement feared Philip but he assumed a leading role in the proceedings and tried do defy him as much as possible by dragging the process. Still he summoned all European leaders to arrest the Knights and to make all their possessions available to the church. His reluctance to assist in the convictions was diminished by the acknowledgment of the accusations by the Grand Master in front of a large audience. He himself was still not convinced of their guilt.
The tortures
Philip knew that they had very little evidence to substantiate the allegations and therefore the prisoners were threatened and tortured in advance of the Inquisition hearings. The order members were to be explained that a confession would lead to forgiveness, while denying would have the death penalty as a consequence. Most prisoners pleaded guilty. It is irrefutable that the majority was tortured, physically and mentally. Fatigue, threatening, fire held under feet or legs, hanging weights on testicles were commonly used so that 'justice was served in a clean and orderly way'. There were numerous reports that prisoners were killed by torture. Most Templar prisoners were priests, servants, warriors. Most knights were still fighting abroad. It made it somewhat easier to extract confessions, knights would possibly put up more of a resistance. The confessions of the Grand Master Jacques de Molay and other leaders broke all resistance and it looked like Philip got his way quite easily.
Resistance
In 1307 Jacques de Molay recanted his confession. Said he confessed out of fear for torture. So did a lot of the other members. In 1308 Clement suspended the activities of the French Inquisition. He took over all responsibilities. The church again gained power and it started to look grim for Philips case, but he pressed on in using propaganda to create support for his allegations. The next card he played was getting a group of Templars to confess by choice. This started a series of events which eventually made the Pope give permission to the French Inquisition to resume their work. in August 1308 the Pope presented his accusation against the Knights Templar order. It existed of 127 articles of heretic practices. It included the denying of Christ, new members were obliged to spit on the cross, the Templars worshiped a cat, the members were stimulated to perform homosexual acts, they hardly gave anything to the poor... and more of this. The Pope gave the whole thing a formal stature and hearings were to be started in Lyon.
The Council and the End of the Knights Templars
In 1310 approximately 550 imprisoned Templars were assisted by a great number of colleagues as defenders for their trials. They actually prepared a good case. But Philip put a stop to their efforts when he ordered 54 members to be burned at the stake for recanting their earlier confessions. This and other events scared the remaining defenders off and they fled the scene, further efforts were nipped in the bud. On Saturday the 16th of October 1311 Clement opened the council in the basilica of Vienne in Lyon. The attendants discussed what to do with the possessions of the order and Philip wanted to form a new order. When Philip in 1312 appeared with a large army, the Pope caved and on April 3rd he announced to the council that he had decided to dissolve the order of the Knights Templar, this was stated in the Vox in excelso . He would consider later what to do with the members and their possessions. Ultimately possessions were divided. And the leaders of the order were subjected to a papal court. On March the 18th 1314 in Paris Jacques de Molay and Godfried of Charnay declared that the order was completely innocent and to the horror of the audience they recanted publicly their confessions. Philip sentenced the two men to death immediately and they would to be burnt at the stake. Legend tells us that just before the fire got to him, Jacques de Molay cursed the King and the Pope. He predicted that they would have to stand trial in heaven within a year and would have to take responsibility for their actions. And indeed, both died that same year.
And that's a wrap! I know Tumblr is supposed to be a mini blog platform. This piece is not a mini blog, I guess. But I don't think I really care. When I want to tell a story like this one, I have to use all the words to tell it as I want or need to. And I used as little as I could ;-).
Tumblr media
While writing this I listened to a nice mix of my current favorite songs on Deezer.

Catechism of the Catholic Church
III. The Effects of Confirmation
1302 It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.
1303 From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace: - it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!";115 - it unites us more firmly to Christ; - it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us; - it renders our bond with the Church more perfect;116 - it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross:117
Recall then that you have received the spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear in God's presence. Guard what you have received. God the Father has marked you with his sign; Christ the Lord has confirmed you and has placed his pledge, the Spirit, in your hearts.118
1304 Like Baptism which it completes, Confirmation is given only once, for it too imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual mark, the "character," which is the sign that Jesus Christ has marked a Christian with the seal of his Spirit by clothing him with power from on high so that he may be his witness.119
1305 This "character" perfects the common priesthood of the faithful, received in Baptism, and "the confirmed person receives the power to profess faith in Christ publicly and as it were officially (quasi ex officio)."120
