Thoughts on II season 2 episode 13
And why it's the piano that got dropped on season 2's head
So recently I rewatched II with my partner and it was the first time in a long time I've been able to watch post-kickstarter season 2 without seeing pure red, and it gave me some new perspective on the series as a whole.
So kind of my issue with this show is that like, post Kickstarter season 2 misunderstands what makes inanimate insanity worth watching. I think this show shines when it's being funny and focusing on character dynamics and conflict. That's why the marshmallow and apple stuff is so appealing. That's why the nickel-balloon-suitcase stuff is so memorable. This is why season 1 and early season 2 are genuinely so enjoyable to watch. This is what I came to the show for. This is what makes the show worth watching.
What made me fall off this show for so long until season 3 came out was really season 2 episode 13. S2E13 is THE episode that showed me season 2 is broken. Season 2 is sick and the symptom is episode 13. Let's talk about why that is.
So, What's good about episode 13?
I call episode 13 the point where the show is broken because you can see the show is still there. It's like how a broken clock is still right twice a day, this episode is right every few scenes. In fact it's BETTER than right. It's phenomenal, even! Everything they do with fan and suitcase, everything they do with baseball and test tube, those are the real gems of the episode.
The way they interact with eachother and establish the new friendships is so full of character and really stands out to me as something special. ESPECIALLY fan and suitcase. Suitcase really cares about him and shows a strong interest at helping him open up and make progress as a person, and he needed that BADLY. And baseball bouncing off test tube's newly gained openness and perspective after episode 12? That's exactly what he needed after spending the last couple episodes desperately searching for a new thing to latch onto after losing nickel. This is what the show is good at. My favorite thing about these scenes too is that, while they are emotional, they are like, genuine and lighthearted too. There's jokes, there's character, they feel like people. They don't feel like drama bait.
But drama bait, I feel, is exactly what hit this show with a hammer
So what makes episode 13 so bad?
Basically Everything else.
Okay yeah that's not fair. What I mean is, basically everything with mephone and meeple in general. If the character interactions are the REAL gems, then the gems in the episode are like lumps of charcoal. Not even real coal, just shitty burnt up wood.
The meeple stuff pisses me off so bad. I'm not even gonna sugar coat it, it makes me genuinely mad. It ruins the episode for me, it ruins mephone for me, and it ruins the good part of the episode too. The way they shove the character interactions aside for half the episode to give you trauma dumps of mephone getting child abused nerfs this episode so much.
Mephone up until this point (and even AFTER this point) is characterized as a Chris McLean dipshit who doesn't care about the lives of his contestants and will absolutely lock them in a small confined space for months. And yet this show expects me to feel all sadcore crycore for him, expects me to feel anything but confused anger at the sudden inclusion of his horrific abuse victim backstory? They SERIOUSLY made the engaging character interactions take a backseat to THIS? I don't understand how the show runners could misunderstand the appeal of their own show This Badly.
It fucks up the episode so much that when suitcase talks about her friendship with fan in episode 14, despite how incredibly well written the VERY FEW scenes they had together were, I feel confused and barely invested. It doesn't feel like they had the correct amount of time together for suitcase to speak so confidently on fan's behalf. It's such a shame, really, because I really do love these characters.
Along with the meeple plotline taking away from the actually engaging part of the show, it also makes NO thematic or tonal sense. Why the fuck is a colonizing corporation here. What does this have to do with the overarching theme of how the stress of the game impacts the way people form relationships. that's what LITERALLY everything else in the show has been focusing on. How does this relate? I don't understand the connection. It feels like it's just shoved in with no rhyme or reason!
To make matters worse, it doesn't even fit the tone of the show on the most basic level! Even when the show IS serious, it's always personal issues. It's between individuals. PLEASE explain to me how in the world a MAJOR CORPORATION INVADING AN ALIEN SPECIES AND STEALING THEIR CHILDREN is a personal conflict. How did they misunderstand their own show THIS BADLY? This show is sick! It's sick! It's broken!
But I do think they're giving it medicine
Fans Fantastic Features And Inanimate Insanity: Invitational, and how they're exactly what II needed
As I said earlier, Inanimate Insanity excels when they are focusing on character interactions and conflicts. This is exactly what FFF and III are focusing on, and they're what made me fall back in love with the series. FFF is nothing but funny shorts revisiting characters that haven't been seen in forever. And god, it knocks it out of the park. I was never fond for trophy but God Damn did they make me warm up to him in that short. I have NEVER seen salt and pepper as well done as they were in the paper cut. I went into FFF so extremely cynical it wasn't even funny, but it really impressed me.
III is probably the best content from inanimate insanity in years, though. This season understands what makes the show worth watching. The characterization is STRONG even though the plot is light hearted. Is the show perfect? No. Do I even like all the characterization? No. But I do feel invested in the conflict, which is miles and miles away from how I feel about everything going on with meeple in season 2.
II2 is in a pit, and it can't get out. But they can make it better, or at least they can make another season thats better. I just hope they don't bog it down with unrelated "bigger than the show" nonsense like they did with season 2.

看完採訪覺得自己講話慢到很低能⋯⋯😂 We're honored to be one of
@nprmusic’s 100 artists to watch at @sxsw!
據說是今年第一次有台灣樂團入選這個 #SXSW 精選「#austin100」名單,感謝 NPR Music 的推薦,挑選" #EYヨ "這首不是特別火紅的歌還蠻意外的,這首歌對我來說非常意義非凡,因此覺得非常感動,真的很高興能在這盛大的活動中獲得這麼高的評論和關注,@imeanus 一直是一個無比幸運的樂團,一路上擁有非常多不求回報的愛人將我們向上推,不過除了幸運之外我們也必須有一至的野心 「At various times, the Taiwanese band I Mean Us has listed its self-appointed genres as "cry-crycore," "post-murmur rock" and "broken-hearted" to go with the more descriptive (and no less accurate) likes of "dream-pop" and "shoegaze." Listen to the swelling, ringing "EYヨ," and you'll get a sense of where all that descriptive language meets: at dynamic, emotionally epic, sweetly sung rock that can barely contain its own drama as it builds to a cataclysmic release」
NICE!  =D
I Mean Us is also recommended on the full 55 minute NPR sxsw podcast: The Austin 100: I Mean Us March 5, 2019 • Recommended if you like Sigur Ros, Slowdive and Cocteau Twins.  “We've listened to more than a thousand songs by bands playing this year's festival. On this episode, we share some of our best discoveries before we hit the ground to see as many shows as possible.”
