THE LOST GIRLS
THE LOST GIRLS
Ava Benny-Morrison (Book 2019)
The Lost Girls is a true-crime book about the murder of Australian mother, Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her 2-year old daughter Khandalyce from the hands of Karlie’s boyfriend Daniel Holdom. Not only did Daniel James Holdom murder but he also raped them (before or after he killed them?). He was a paedophile and at the time of his arrest, he was already in prison serving time for raping a 9-year old girl at a caravan park at The Entrance, NSW Central Coast.
After he raped and murdered the mother and child (at separate times), he and his girlfriend Hazel Passmore, used their ID to get the victims money which was thousands of dollars (more than $71,770.55). Hazel would even go to Centrelink posing as Karli and wasn’t asked to produce photo id in order to succeed at fraud. Holdom would text message Karlie’s family members to make believe that Karlie and Khandalyce was still alive and would often ask them for money. Hazel also rang up family members pretending to be Karlie to ask for money over the phone. When Karlie’s mother was in hospital dying she experienced a hallucinated that Karlie and Khandalyce was standing in the corner of the room (Karlie’s mother didn’t know they were both dead at the time). The family members believed that Karlie and Khandalyce were still alive, due to Holdom and Hazel’s cruel deception.
Holdom and Hazel showed no remorse for their crimes and only cared about themselves rather than the rapes and murders that Holdom conducted. Even throughout his police inteviews and court appearance, Holdom was lying, covering up the truth and was extremely contradictive. The only person that Holdom felt sorry for was himself.
Holdom went into a relationship with Karlie due to the fact she looked young and liked the fact that she had a young daughter. His relationship with Hazel was of convenience as she enabled his behaviour and overlooked his crimes. Hazel also had young children, he killed them both and left Hazel in a wheel chair, she remained with him. He told her the crimes he committed, his crimes against children as well as the murders he conducted, she still remained with him. She even saw the photos he took after he killed Karle, she still remained with him. Hazel disliked Karlie (was jealous of Holdom and Karlie’s relationship) and believed that he killed Karlie so he could be with her (which isn’t true) and Hazel gained some kind of ego boost from it. Hazel was obsessed with Holdom so much that she would spy on him and monitor his computer, and found his child pornography collection, she still remained with him. Hazel and Holdom broke up in 2011, however; she asked him to babysit her daughter in 2012 (her daughter was a child at the time) even though she knew he was a dangerous threat to children.
Holdom raped Karlie either before or after he murdered her, her body was found with a glass bottle between her legs (which was also in the trophy photo he took just after he killed her). He most likely killed Karlie to get access to her daughter and for the financial reward. He later took Khandalynce to a hotel room to rape and kill her. His crimes on women and children were sadistic and made them suffer before he killed them. He had purchased all the items he needed for his crime at a store just before he killed the child. Karlie was killed and her body was left in Belanglo Forest, when this was first announced on the news, many people first thought it was a victim of Ivan Milat as Belanglo Forest is where he left his victims. Khandalyce was killed later on, and her body was dumped on the side of the road in a suitcase. Holdom afterwards kept the possessions of Karlie and Khandalynce and did very little to dispose of them, he left their belongings at numerous locations which detectives later discovered. The detectives found a list that had been written belonging to Holdom and Hazel, a list of names of children, their age and whether they consented or not. Holdom had a history of crime, including abuse towards women and ignoring AVOs.
Holdom was found guilty and got two life sentences in prison. Hazel on the other hand was laughing all the way to the bank. She gained a lot of money from a civil law suit against Holdom and never got fined or a prison term for her role in the crimes. She is now living in QLD with her new partner and children.
Ava Benny-Morrison did a brilliant job at this book and it wouldn’t have been easy book to write. Not only was the subject disturbing, but it was also a jigsaw puzzle and she would have had to do a lot of research to complete this. If you read true crime books, you should definitely read this. It’s also interesting how the detectives put two and two together, even if Holdom didn’t plead guilty, he wouldn’t have stood a chance with all the evidence up against him. Thanks to our police force and detectives, they did a brilliant job of putting him behind bars.

Ezra Clayton Daniels & Ben Passmore - BTTM FDRS
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed this graphic novel a whole lot - a lot of great stuff about the nature of gentrification and art, all set in a world that seems to have a vibe somewhat akin to John Carpenter or David Cronenberg. I dunno, rather than talk about it - here’s a little spoiler-free sample that I really enjoyed:

In BTTM FDRS, Ben Passmore and Ezra Claytan Daniels confront the problem of gentrification in comic horror form. Our critic Etelka Lehoczky talked to them about their own experiences with gentrification, and why they chose to approach it through the lens of horror. Check out the conversation here.

Words:Ezra Claytan Daniels/Art:Ben Passmore / FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS, INC
FROM THE TOP
BTTM FDRS is a spot-on critique of the causality of urban gentrification. Packaged as a razor-sharp, pastel flavored fever dream, this book is scary, good, and scary good. Bttm Fdrs is the latest from multimedia dynamo Ezra Claytan Daniels whose last few entries The Changers and Upgrade Soul are already revered as modern classics in the genre. Paired up with Eisner award-winning indie comic creator and illustrator Ben Passmore, whose collection of race-savvy comics “Your Black Friend” are a gem unto themselves.
Daniels and Passmore aren’t just writing about the issue at hand, they genuinely know what they’re talking about. Even the synopsis is a stroke of comprehension: “Once a thriving working-class neighborhood on Chicago’s south side, the ‘Bottomyards’ is now the definition of urban blight. When an aspiring fashion designer and her image-obsessed BFF descend upon the hood in search of cheap rent, they discover something far more seductive… and deadly.” The levity of this synopsis alone rivals the pretentious gravitas of several Steven King made for TV series trailers, it’s pitch perfect!
THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD
The title is a play on “bottom feeders”, the name given to a particular fictional neighborhood with very real parallels to that part of town. You know, the other side of the tracks. You really can’t put creators this woke (and this humble) on a project and not expect a fantastic product. For real. Instead of just talking about gentrification, Daniels and Passmore go the extra mile to build out a macrocosmic metaphor in the space of one building.
Tumblr media
ME, YOU, YOUR MAMA & YOUR COUSIN TOO
The writing in BTTM FDRS is top-notch millennial ‘newspeak’. There is a blend of acerbic wit, apathy, and unearned wisdom in the dialogue that just drips of youthful realism. Mastery of that voice is key in understanding how to engage this topic. Comics have been a bastion for folks looking to talk about the ‘ways of the world’, even more recently with titles like Scarlet and Infidel, breaking down the -isms that plague society. What sets BTTM FDRS apart is the exactitude with which it analyzes the issues at hand: the racism that has distilled down to classism that leads to redlining designed to create property devaluation which leads to gentrification to prepare for displacement. In short, Daniels and Passmore point the blame where it’s due and that makes the book even more impactful because everyone plays a role.

DEBUTING AT TCAF 2019: BTTM FDRS By Ezra Claytan Daniels and Ben Passmore
288 Pages, Full Colour, Hardcover, 7″ x 6″, Spring 2019, Published by Fantagraphics
An Afrofuturist horror-comedy about gentrification and cultural appropriation.
Once a thriving working-class neighborhood on Chicago’s south side, the “Bottomyards” is now the definition of urban blight. When an aspiring fashion designer and her image-obsessed BFF descend upon the hood in search of cheap rent, they discover something far more seductive… and deadly.
Gentrification and body horror collide in this brutal satire from the award-winning creators of Upgrade Soul and Your Black Friend.
“I fell in love with this comic right about page one, and then just kept falling. Gentrification horror at its finest.” — Victor LaValle, author of The Changeling

“Books are a form of political action. Books are knowledge. Books are a reflection. Books change your mind.” - Toni Morrison
It has always been, and always will be, vital to educate ourselves on the world around us. Here you will find a list of books and essays by authors of colour, and which speak about the experiences of people of colour everywhere. By committing to read even one of these books, you are expanding your consciousness of the lives around you, and giving people of colour a voice.
