#dark reign: avengers debriefing

The Avengers held a debriefing meeting to go over Norman Osborn’s announcement about his own Avengers, X-Men and Cabal. Before they were able to find any answers, however, C.R.A.D.L.E. operatives arrived on the scene and demanded  that all underage heroes who were present be turned over.
THIS IS THE OFFICIAL COMPLETE CHAT LOG COVERAGE OF THE IC
CAROL: America’s Avengers — that’s what Norman had called them. Ten costumed clad heroes with masked identities, hidden from public and hidden from them. The last decade had been an opportunity for heroes to gain public trust in a way they never had before. Offering themselves, unmasked, had created a line of trust from hero to layperson. Revealing your identity opened you up to untold threats, and that was before the people you cared about were involved. Carol had never hidden her identity, she hadn’t ever really needed to. Most of her time spent was on a different planet in a separate galaxy and she didn’t have much to protect on earth. People knowing who she was just allowed her to save them in broad daylight and she never really had to think much of it. But then Osborn had stepped into the limelight and floored everyone with his own set of heroes – and Carol was hesitant to call them that. Every bit of information had been pulled on this masked heroes and the database barely offered them crumbs. Super-people running around under Osborn’s authority felt like a power grab instead of a shield, and Carol still didn’t know how to respond to it. At the helm of the table, Carol didn’t say much as people filed, filling their respective seats. She tried not to pay attention to the idle murmuring as it buzzed around her, her thoughts too easily dismantled with her current stress level. This threat was so soon after the war with the mutants and she wasn’t eager to have to face another set of supers. “I would say thank you for coming, but I know most of us don’t want to be here given the recent events. As you all know, President Norman Osborn has revealed a very unorthodox plan to completely level everything we’ve known and built. He has his own set of Avengers, his own intelligence agency, and even his own X-men. He has done this with little regard to the Avengers and the X-men already established and standing, and his dissolution of SHIELD is alarming. Unfortunately, we can only surmise as to what it is he is doing and why — and how he plans on enacting whatever that is. We’re left with more questions than answers, so if anyone has anything to offer, please feel free to share.”
SAM: He didn’t do well in cages. Never had. Sure, there was ancestral trauma that he could talk to his shrink about but the truth of the matter was that Sam Wilson didn’t do well in cages and he didn’t like being locked in. With dislikes like those his career as a pararescuemen made sense, as did the huge emphasis on the freedom that being Cap came with. That being said, he had seen his fair share of bars. There had been the literal ones of the Raft, but Osborn’s new world felt even more constricting. It was terrifying because they were supposed to believe they were free when they were anything but. Sam let Carol talk. He gave her some space while he paced in the back of the room before his arms found a home crossed over his chest. These debriefings never went well. It was like the Sokovian Accords all over again, but this time the ghosts of Tony, Nat and Steve were all too present. He kept scanning the peripheral for a glimpse of red or straining his ears for a sarcastic retort, but they were gone. Whatever was happening they’d go alone. “I think it goes without saying I may not be Norman’s biggest fan,”  Sam piped up from the back wall. “But let’s try not to look at it personally. We’ve done this song and dance before. They may have a harder time touchin’ us, but you guys?” He jutted his head at the minors. “We need to get smart and fast.”
PETER: If there was one thing that Peter valued, it was his privacy– and that was being threatened, big time. Peter glanced over to Sam’s finger as it jutted over in his general direction, the eyes of his suit widening just slightly like he had been accused of something. “I don’t have any ideas.” Yeah, that was definitely worth saying Peter. “Anyone else? Because this really sucks.”
NADIA: Ever since the Coles Incident - which is what they were calling the event where Nadia had potentially lost two of her best friends - she had been doing her best to brainstorm in moderation without  driving herself crazy. “I would say that we try to talk to them, but we did.” That whole hearing had been awful. They had asked questions that weren’t even about what happened, like they could create problems out of nowhere. “I agree with Peter. It sucks.” 10 points for the children being helpful.
IDIE: Idie sat with the other representatives of Krakoa, listening carefully to what Carol was saying. The last few weeks had all felt like a whirlwind – so much was happening so fast. Her eyes wandered round the room as Carol spoke, looking over the familiar faces and the new ones, making a note in her head that these were people she could somewhat trust in these troubled times. She didn’t trust this new world she was living in – even though the people in this room were united against one cause, it was the Krakoa mutants Idie trusted most with her life, and she hoped they trusted her. Her eyes flickered to the new Captain America – who piped up after Carol had finished speaking, and his words resonated with her. He was right. They needed to work harder and smarter than they had before. President Osborn’s new Avenger’s felt like his own personal paramilitary, and she worried how he would use his new X-Men team. “I was a child when I came to the X-Men,” Idie stood up as she spoke, taking a breath as she gathered her thoughts. “I see myself in these young heroes. While they are young, they’re also smart. They are aware of the world around them and its dangers. No one cared that I was a child when my powers mutated, all they saw was a witch who deserved to die.” There was a bitterness in Idie’s tone as she spoke. “What I’m trying to say is, these young heroes are assets, not dangers. With the right training, they can be stronger and smarter heroes. We should be giving them a chance, not turning them away.”
SUSAN: This was, unfortunately, not a new rodeo. The Fantastic Four had always been hyper visible as a group and that had bled into their private life. People who didn’t understand how they operated had tried to have say in their parenting and fighting off CPS while also trying to save the multiverse was exhausting. “Every hero needs responsibility, but I know most of you didn’t choose this. Even if you did, you’re all doing a good thing.  I know C.R.A.D.L.E.  started raids. Is there any kind of sanctuary we can make in the short term?” Susan glanced to her husband and children. “I think we need to be prepared to fight them.”
ERIK: “While I will not argue that the future of our young heroes here is important, there is more to focus on than them. They are more than used to standing up for themselves, no matter their age.” Erik figured that it was his turn to speak now, since there was much to discuss. “The group of mutants parading around under the direction of the President have broken away from the ideas we on Krakoa hold sacred. They threaten the incredible amount of work, blood, tears, and pain we have suffered through to get to where we are now.”
VALERIA: Valeria sat quietly, listening to the other heroes speak. A lot was going on in the room, and a lot of different opinions were being said – it was going to be a difficult night ahead. “My mom is right,” Valeria spoke. “We can fight as well as any of you in this room, but C.R.A.D.L.E. poses a risk to our lives. To our futures. If we are to be put in a sanctuary, we should be prepared to fight. Give us training, don’t put us in a corner and leave us be. That will only end badly.”
JEAN: The announcement of ‘America’s X-Men’ had sounded wrong from the moment she had heard it. Sitting with her son swaddled against her, Jean nodded along lightly as Erik spoke. It was strange. Her own younger self technically fell outside of the law now. “As does his Cabal. Whatever deal he and Emma made is not reflective of the Quiet Council or Krakoa. Kate,” the redhead glanced towards Pryde. “You’re Hellfire. Was that planned?” It stung, a bit. Jean and Emma had grown closer and her decision to drag Krakoa into Osborn’s circle was made without warning. Out of respect the telepath had stayed out of her mind, but the situation had become icy.
IDIE:  Idie nodded as Erik spoke. She could have laughed at the fact she found herself agreeing with Magneto of all people (perhaps Quentin had been right all these years, although she would not be admitting that to him. “For some of us, Krakoa is the only home we’ve ever known. This X-Men group threatens to take it away from us.” She glanced at Jean, an eyebrow raised at her comment. “Ms. Grey, I don’t think now is the time for fighting between us. We need to be united.”
GWEN: “I don’t even live here,” Gwen was slouched over with her head in her hands, “but they’ve made it pretty clear I’m at risk as well when I’m here.” Her identity in Earth-13130 remained a secret to the general public even though at the meeting her hood had been pulled back to rest against her neck. She didn’t just want to ignore people in trouble though if she saw them. “Val’s right. Fighting is our best option. They can’t push us around just because we’re younger.”
VALERIA: A smirk crept across Val’s face as Gwen said she was right. “We may be young but we made a commitment to be who we are, if we didn’t we wouldn’t be sitting in this room discussing it.” She rested a comforting hand on Gwen’s shoulder, squeezing it gently. “It’s our choice, isn’t it? We chose this life. We want to fight this, and if you put us somewhere for our own protection without giving us the tools to fight and protect ourselves, you might as well let C.R.A.D.L.E. find us, capture us, and do God only knows what to us.”
PETER: “We can fight, but what’s that really gonna do?” Peter spoke up again. “If we fight them.. isn’t that just going to make them want all of these rules even more? It’s true that we can stand up for ourselves, but I don’t know if there’s a way to actually get them to stop.”
ILLYANA: “Who said anything about fighting?” Blue eyes were trained on black painted nails. It was ridiculous that she fell under the rule considering her history. Illyana’s words were directed at Idie though, not any of the other people who had actually discussed fighting. “I don’t think Jean did, but the blonde with the big brain - that was Val - seems interested.” Illyana was too.
KATE: Reclining back as far as her chair would reach, Kate had been fiddling with the edge of her coat as people spoke around her. Osborn’s sudden resurgence into society along with his reveal of his shiny new squad didn’t sit well with her. And as Kate understood, it didn’t sit well with anyone. It took a moment for her to register that Jean had addressed her and she automatically wanted to respond with a ‘what’, but Jean’s words managed to sink in before she did. Dark eyes shifted around the room, not really focusing on anyone, before coming to land back on Jean. “You’re asking the wrong person. I wouldn’t work with Norman if you paid me, but considering the affairs of the Hellfire Club, I can only assume there is something to gain. Emma wouldn’t do it otherwise.”
REED: “I see where everyone is coming from, but it’s never as simple as we want it to be.” Reed replied to both his daughter and the rest of the group. “Putting the kids together and making sure they’re safe sounds logical at first, but is it really smart to put all of them together? If something were to happen, they make an easy target that way.”
JESSICA: “Mutants, underaged heroes,” Jessica ticked off the issues on one hand. “the fact that we don’t know who these heroes are. Should we try and pick a topic or do we like bouncing around?” She opposed everything on the grounds that it felt wrong and S.H.I.E.L.D.,  while imperfect, was often more good than bad. Now a mother herself of a kid with super powers, Jessica hated the unease that came with considering this version of the future. “Did literally anyone see this coming?”
IDIE: “All I meant was that we can’t be seen at each other’s throats.” Idie turned to Illyana. “It would only give people reason to support Osborn’s X-Men, and I think we can agree that is the last thing we want.” Her eye glanced over at the underaged heroes for a moment, spotting the blonde Illyana had spoken about, then turned back to the other mutant. “Fighting whatever Osborn is up to. If we want to stand against it, we need to stand together.”
VALERIA: “We’re stronger together than we are apart, Dad.” Valeria stared at her dad, her eyes wide. “We need each other right now. We can protect each other. We aren’t just a group of dumb kids, Dad. We have powers, just like the rest of you.”
JEAN: Deciding to ignore both Illyana and Idie, Jean kept her gaze on Kate. She’d always have a soft spot for her and her inability to get on Krakoa meant that the two didn’t see each other near enough. Part of that was on her, of course, but with the baby and the Council one thing often turned into the next and suddenly a week had gone by. “If Emma had talked to anyone it would have been you, Kate, or Scott.” Her glance didn’t flicker over to the husband who sat beside her. “This Cabal is international. Do we know anything else about it?”
SUSAN: “Of course you aren’t, dear.” Susan’s tone was more patient than patronizing. Valeria was one of the smartest there was. “We just need to be strategic and delicate here. They’re looking for another incident like what happened with Ms. Marvel. You’re all out of grace and chances.”
PETER: “My paranoia saw this coming.” Peter’s reply to Jess was meant to be quieter than it ended up being. “And still, I have no idea what to do other than just.. not register. But I’m not ready for the whole city or-or the whole world to hate me or think I’m the bad guy.”
XANDRA: Her goal had been to remain as innocuous as possible. Although she preferred not to, Xandra had slipped from her chamber and left an illusion in her place. It had taken a great deal of concentration to maintain her own physical camouflage but as soon as she arrived on the premise she allowed that to fall. “My aunt betrayed me.” Feathers ruffled around her face as she spoke. “Which knowing Deathbird should not be a surprise.” And yet, it was. Xandra had truly hoped for the best. “She joined your President’s Cabal without my approval. Her vote does not represent the Shi’ar people.”
SAM: “Sometimes they’re gonna think you’re the bad guy. It’s inevitable when we’re the ones doing the hard stuff people don’t want to deal with.” Sam knew that unfortunately too well. “We fight, we look bad. We don’t and we end up screwed. We’re just all in agreeance that we don’t know enough yet about what’s going on.”
VALERIA: Val slouched back in her seat, running a hand through her hair as she thought. She was a child to most of these people, it didn’t matter how smart she was, or what she thought. Peter’s remark made her scoff as she held back a laugh. “Separating us and putting us in safe houses where we will feel useless will give them another Ms. Marvel incident,” Valeria tried to be patient, but it felt like her words were falling on deaf ears.
NADIA: “Can we please stop calling it that?”  Nadia’s voice was quiet. She loved Kamala. The two had been close ever since Kamala had tried to help Nadia get her citizenship set up. Hearing all the terrible things the world was saying about Ms. Marvel in Kamala’s name made her sick. There was no way she’d stand behind any of it. “She’s my friend.”
KATE: "I didn’t say we hadn’t talked.“ Kate responded cooly. They had talked. Kate had outright confronted her, but Emma had brushed it off. No big deal. The excuses given to her were easy enough to accept if you wanted to, but Kate didn’t trust Norman, so she didn’t trust that Emma was telling her the whole story. "I just assume Emma has her reasons and I don’t demand people to give me information. I trust her.” Half of that was true. Kate did trust Emma, but she didn’t know how much of a hand Norman had in this.
PETER: Underneath the mask, Peter’s face burned a light red. Sam was right, but that didn’t mean he was going to admit it. He could stay stubborn, clinging to his idealism for as long as he could. “We keep talking about another incident, but that’s the worst case scenario right? It’s not Kamala’s fault.” He glanced to Nadia, expression soft even if it wasn’t easy to read under his mask. “It’s not our fault at all. It’s Norman’s. There’s gotta be something we can do before it’s too late.”
SCOTT:  He’d chosen to remain quiet on the issue thus far. A team of mutants with Madelyne on it already gave him everything he needed to know about Osborn’s intentions, and he didn’t need to chew on it to get the point across. This had threat written all over it — he just couldn’t figure out why Emma would work with him. He almost considered that she was defaulting to who they had used to be, but Scott knew that even if she was, this was not the route to take. “She hasn’t talked to me.” He responded to Jean before Kate had the chance, his tone level. “This is all still fairly new.”
JEAN: It hadn’t really been accusatory, but Jean still needed to make sure everyone knew that Scott wasn’t involved with what Emma was doing. Jean didn’t want to turn people against  Frost but they needed to be clear on where everyone stood. “Emma joined the Cabal and we had no idea. Your aunt,” she turned to Xandra. “Did so without your permission. And then there’s Loki and Maximus. Did the Asgardians and Inhumans know?”
ODINSON: “Loki’s schemes are never ending.” Odinson replied with an eyeroll. “It’s difficult to guess their intentions, but I am not surprised by where they ended up. If teams like this were to be formed, Loki would be drawn to it all like an insect to a flame.”
CRYSTALIA: Even though it may have surprised most, Crystalia had stayed mostly quiet throughout this. New Attilan was almost exempt from the problem but her connection to the Nuhumans and Kamala Khan made it her problem. “My cousin is a snake in the grass.” Prior fondness was dulled by years of backstabbing. Lockjaw was panting in the corner, his massive head nearly in the doorway. “The Inhumans have struggled enough without him causing trouble.”
SAM: “We’re going to figure it out, kid. I promise. There’s no way in hell we’re going to let you guys go down here. But we gotta ask ourselves: who are these people and how did Norman recruit them without us knowing?”
CAROL: "Are we really surprised he did?“ Her question was directed at Sam’s. "He doesn’t exactly strike me as all that forthright. If anything, this is expected. You gather a set of heroes who will follow you and you have a perfect war machine.”
VALKYRIE: “Well, one of them is a two faced wench with a preference for green.” Val was leaned forward in her chair, one tattooed forearm braced against the table. “The Enchantress. Amora has never spelled anything but trouble.”
THOR: “And the Minotaur.” Thor piggybacked off of Val. “I knoweth him, unfortunately. His name is Dario Agger. He runs Roxxon and his bloodlust is… unfortunate, to say the least.”
SAM: “Surprised? No. Disappointed? Yes. There should only be one War Machine, and that’s Rhodes. Taking up the Iron Patriot without saying anything was meant to be disrespectful. What about Star? Wanda, you said you got a reality stone reading off of her. You, Vis and Carol know the Stones pretty well. Do we know her deal?”
KATE: “Look I could be wrong,” Kate had leaned forward at this point, interjecting between Sam’s and Carol’s conversation. “But I think I talked to her. Star, I mean.”
WANDA: “You did?” Wanda turned her attention to Kate, speaking for the first time. She had spent the night picking up on different energies but had turned a blind eye due to how caught up in the Vision she had been. Now, she was regretting her decision. “I admit that I didn’t look close enough. Who was she?”
KATE: “She actually came with you, I think.” Kate said, subtly pointing towards Carol. “God, all I can picture is the atrocious pink dress. In a gala like that, you’d expect opulence or at least something formal. Not mid 2000’s Barbie dreamhouse. I didn’t catch her name, but something about her was off. Like Norman Osborn off.”
JEAN: “Kate,” Jean shifted so she could pass (baby) Charles to Scott. “Would you mind if I entered your mind for a moment to pull the name and face out?”
SAM: “You brought an American Avenger as your date, Danvers?” Sam’s brow rose. He couldn’t place her face. It was a bland blonde mix. He hadn’t been there long at all. Mostly a quick stop in and then bail to try and get home to rest.
KATE: For a long moment, Kate just stared at Jean, her features blank. She didn’t want to give anything away in the moment, but she wasn’t comfortable being in her own head, let alone letting someone else navigate around there. But she’d offered this tidbit of information, so maybe she should see this the whole way through. “If you think it’s necessary.”
JEAN: Thank you for trusting me. Jean’s words were spoken so only Kate could hear. Her eyes turned pink as she carefully dived into Kitty’s mind, dancing around anything intimate to find her way to the night in question. It took a moment to bring a blurry memory to focus, but then “—I thought I said I didn’t want to know your name.” Jean spoke along with the memory as the blonde rose from her barstool and began to back away. “Ripley.” The light died down then and Jean let the image of ‘Ripley’ be projected towards the others. “Do we know who she is or why she has a reality stone?”
CAROL:  She had suspected that Ripley was who Kate was referring to, but Carol hadn’t been struck with the same vibe. “She’s just a reporter.” She said in slight defense. “Are you sure you think it’s her?”
JESSICA: “Jesus Christ.” Jess shook her head, looking to Carol in disbelief. She should have put it together and felt stupid for not doing so, but Jess hadn’t even attended the Gala or seen who Carol had brought with her. “That ‘reporter’ is a psycho bitch. Ripley Ryan. Star. She’s from my reality.” As in, Earth-616. “She had a major bone to pick with you, Carol. Went as far as being experimented on to get back at you. You both almost died, but she was carted off to the Raft. I haven’t been home since then. I had no idea she’d gotten a Stone or came here.”
CAROL: Carol’s eyes shifted quickly, meeting Jess’s. Behind her gaze, there was a twinge of surprise but she did her best to keep her reaction neutral. “And you’re sure.” She didn’t doubt Jess, she hadn’t even known why she bothered asking, but a part of her wanted to believe in the girl. Carol always felt she had great instincts, and to have something be so carefully hidden right before her eyes was a hard pill to swallow. “She does realize that I’m not from her reality.”
GWEN: She had forgot to turn it off. Flipping your phone to mute seemed like a pretty simple thing to remember if you were going to very respectable Avengers meetings, especially when you lived in another reality and your dad couldn’t even contact you on this emergency line. Her phone was so often ignored that she was surprised when it began to trill that awful sound usually reserved only for Amber Alerts. She quickly fumbled with the device, about to turn it off until she caught sight of the picture that had come with the headline. Suddenly, Carol’s murderous girlfriend or whatever was way less important. Nadia and Lana’s phones  went off as well, and Gwen quickly tried to read and reread what had been sent out. “–uh, guys??”
PETER: Peter knew something was off even before Gwen reacted. He watched her reach for her phone but ignored his own that vibrated on the surface in front of him. The anxiety made him freeze, but as Gwen’s eyes stayed glued to her phone he knew he had to see for himself. He reached for his own, clicked it on, and there it was. It took longer than it should have for it to all sink in. What was in reality only a few seconds felt like minutes to him, and suddenly he became hyper aware of everyone focusing in on him. “What?” Maybe his eyes were tricking him? He felt his heart begin to race and heard it echo in his ears. This wasn’t really happening, was it? That was.. him. Right smack in the middle of his screen– and everyone else’s for that matter. It was out. Someone must have been following him, or someone here maybe sold him out.. or– “No, no no no no–!” Everything went cold, and his hands began to shake. His phone would have dropped out of his grasp if he hadn’t held on to it just a bit too tight, causing the screen to splinter at the edges. Right now he was surrounded and it felt like he was in a cage. Vulnerable. Exposed. Terrified. Betrayed. Peter Parker is Spider-Man. And there was no taking it back. Even though they had all just been discussing the future of people like him, suddenly Peter didn’t trust a single one of them. But his brain was in a fog– rage, confusion, terror. He couldn’t get himself to move, but he was at least thankful he had his mask on so no one could see the few tears trailing down his cheeks. “–what am I supposed to do now?” His voice was barely at a whisper.
JESSICA: Well, shit. That had taken the meeting in a way no one had expected. Jessica had to fish her phone out of her bag to see what everyone was staring at. Once she did she almost wished that she hadn’t. Maybe it was her unearthed motherly instinct, but she was quickly on her feet and moving around the table to crouch beside Parker. “Hey, kid,” her voice was low, dark head bent towards him. “Right now? Take deep breaths.”
LANA: “What the actual @#$@#. So they’re just going to out people and endanger them now?” Lana’s hands were curled into fists. She had never had a secret identity in the traditional sense. If the government wanted her they’d likely be able to find her unless she was on Krakoa. “We have to @#$@# do something.”
CAROL: Interesting how the world had just been introduced to a series of masked crusaders and one of their very own had just been forced to reveal who he was. Choosing to stay back, Carol observed the panic and frustration, understanding both but reacting to neither. Turning to Sam, she tried to catch his attention with a soft tone. “Convenient timing, wouldn’t you say?”
SAM: “It’s bullshit, that’s what it is.” Sam couldn’t keep the anger out of his voice. Peter was a good kid. If someone wanted to out themselves it was fine, but a public callout wasn’t. “This is the kind of game we’re going to be playing. I hate to say it, but we won’t have time to sit back. They’re going to come straight at us.”
PETER: The grip he had around his phone tightened more and he could hear the quiet cascade of cracking glass from underneath his fingers. Peter was breathing. But it was definitely not deep breaths. The skin-tight red fabric around his chest rose and fell heavily as he sat there fuming, and he eventually got to his feet. ”I’m breathing just fine!” His voice wasn’t at a whisper anymore, and as he turned away from Jess he slammed a fist against the table. For a split second his mind wandered to Aunt May. How long would it take for her to hear the news and call him? What was he going to say to her? Was it even safe for him to go home? The equal levels of fear and anger had shifted as the seconds ticked by, and Peter found himself seeing red. His empty hand rose up and ripped off his mask, and he closed his eyes as the cool air hit his skin. “What’s the point of this anymore?” The fistful of red he had just pulled off was promptly thrown harshly to his feet, where it stayed and he stared at it. “Who did this to me? Why me? Why now?”
CAROL: She hated how right he was. A tic in the back of her jaw worked as she watched Peter, choosing to keep her personal emotions to herself. There was no reason to amplify the stress in the room. “Then we take the fight to them. Look, I don’t know how the Avengers were run before, but we’re not going to wait until they drop a bomb on New York to react. If Norman wants a war, I say we give him one.”
SAM: “We miscalculate this and we could be over. Osborn doesn’t need much to spin things against us. Whatever we do, we do it right.” If Steve were here he would have told him whatever it takes. But once again, he wasn’t. “If you have a secret identity, you may want to consider telling your loved ones.” Sam addressed the group. “Or if you can’t, let us know and we’ll find away to keep them safe. I’m sorry, Peter, really, but this isn’t about you. Osborn’s making an example out of you and it’s a real piece of shit thing to do. This has got to be our wake up call, guys. Things can turn and fast.”
JESSICA: Jess didn’t flinch as Peter lashed out. Had it been her she would have done worse, green energy tearing holes in everything around her. For a long time she had wrestled with the  fact that she had almost never had a secret identity. She longed for anonymity but was also grateful to avoid things like this. “Norman Osborn is not a good guy where I come from. We can talk about it later, if you want.” As much as Jess tried to keep reality separate it couldn’t be avoided tonight. She and Peter B. had decided long ago that some things should be kept secret. Not lied about, per se, but what happened to Peter B.’s Gwen had never been something this Peter needed to bear. With everything happening now some truths may have been inevitable.  Catching Gwen’s eye over his shoulder, Jess gave her a look before rising and facing Carol and Steve to listen in on their conversation.
GWEN: Gwen wasn’t really sure why she was being passed the baton, but she did know being a teenaged spider person sucked.  She had seen frustration and fear in her Peter and it scared her to see it again, but she did the best to shake the feeling off. Webbing quickly shot the mask into her hands, and Gwen placed it in front of him once more. “The point of this is that you get out there and help people. Your mask is your badge, even if you don’t need to wear it. I think you need some air, Peter.”
PETER: “Well it definitely feels like it’s about me! That’s my face on your phone! Who knows how many people have seen this.” Finally Peter loosened the grip on his phone and let it drop back to the table with a thud. He didn’t want to believe that Norman would do something like this, not something so personal. The harder he tried to ignore that horrible feeling deep in his gut, the worse it got. He took a long glance at Jess as she moved away, not offering her up either a yes or no– but filing away the invitation for later. As Gwen moved closer he fought hard against his urge to move away before she reached him. It would have been so easy to tell her to leave him alone. But he stayed. He let her grab hold of his mask and through the mess of brown curls covering his eyes, he found himself unable to look away as she held it out to him. His lungs were still taking in harsh shallow breaths. He was still angry. But she was right– he needed some air. ”–fine. Peter picked up his phone and turned to head out of the room without grabbing his mask, and without bothering to see if Gwen would follow him. It was hard to tell if he wanted to be alone right now or not. The feelings of loneliness and being completely stifled were too hard to separate. Every feeling was, truthfully.
H.A.M.M.E.R: It started with the peeling of an alarm. Some kind of sirens were blaring and then there was the pounding of boots that never heralded anything good. We’re here under the authorization of C.R.A.D.L.E. in regards to S.315,  the Underage Superhuman Welfare Act, an amplified voice accompanied the sound of the door being ripped open before H.A.M.M.E.R. agents inundated the room. “This is Carolina Washington, C.R.A.D.L.E. officer.” A woman shouldered her way to the front with her weapon raised. “We were made aware that underaged heroes who have not yet complied with the law were converging here. We need to bring them in to register. Please, let’s do this the easy way.”
CAROL: Carol jumped to her feet so quickly that her chair kicked out from under her and landed cockeyed on the floor. The alarm blared in her ears, a torrent of sound that was as startling as it was telling. She didn’t bother paying mind to the introduction; when a gun was raised at her, she didn’t quite care for formalities. “I think the time for doing things the right way has passed, Sam.” Carol tossed over her shoulder.
PETER: Peter made it about two steps before he sensed it. Eyes that were once glued to the floor shot up and landed on the doors just before they were slashed open. He glanced back to the rest of the group, to his friends and the people his age that they were here for. It only took a moment for Peter’s face to harder with resolve, and now he was going to the right (or maybe very stupid) thing. Once he turned back around he shot out webbing and swung himself to the center of the room to place himself in front of the CRADLE officers. “Yeah? Well I’m Peter Parker– but I guess you already knew that didn’t you?” He held out his arms wide out at his sides, almost inviting them to come at him. “I would say that it’s nice to meet you Carolina, but it’s really not. So why don’t you just get outta here, and leave my friends alone. I’m in a really crappy mood.”
H.A.M.M.E.R.: “It’s nice to meet you, Peter Parker.” Carolina replied coolly, one hand signaling her men. “I thought your face looked familiar.” They had brought collars, already prepped and warned by the telepath they were working with on what to expect. It had been a precaution to bring back-up with them, Star of the American Avengers and the Goblin Queen of the American X-Men as back-up. “You and your friends are going to follow the law now and come with us.”
RIPLEY: Carol was here, but Ripley didn’t really feel like saying hi. The hot brunette from the bar was as well but this was business and needed to be treated as such. “Collar.” The word left bored lips as the newly minted Avenger pointed towards a female mutant in a ridiculous coat, a collar solidifying around her throat a second later. “Next?”
PETER: “Yeah, that’s me. Don’t worry, I won’t be offended if you didn’t set that picture of me as your lockscreen.” He took one more determined step closer and then criss-crossed his arms, each hand aiming at the guns closest to him to send webbing flying towards them. It sealed the ends of the barrels. He didn’t dare look behind him, but he hoped this was giving them all enough time to find another way out. “We aren’t going anywhere.”
ILLYANA: Oh, she was so not into this. “C’mon, you. Time to go.” Illyana took a step closer to Scott and Jean, her overall purpose there to make sure they could get the baby back unharmed. There was a flash of light before she dipped and took the Grey-Summers family with her.
LANA: “@#$@#.” Gloved hands clawed at Lana’s throat. “Seriously? Me first?” She looked to Nate as if he had some way to remove a collar.
KATE: No, they weren’t. Phasing through the floor, Kate maneuvered until she was just beneath one of the agents, reemerging with enough force that she knocked his weapon from his hand and took it into her own. Aiming it at Carolina, she tightened her finger on the trigger. “You brought a gun to a mutant fight; I’m not really sure how you planned on winning this one.”
RIPLEY: “With a little extra firepower.” Ripley moved fast enough to materialize behind Kate, crimson eyes trained on the gun.  “That gun doesn’t work.” The red in her chest flared up in a  moment of red intensity before a smile settled over her lips.
GWEN: Her body rippled as the black of her suit overtook the white, pink threading down the material. “Love the energy Pete, really, but maybe less angst and more focus?” Her symbiote always whispered louder in her ear when she let it manifest like that but they weren’t going to rip anyone in half tonight. “Maybe we need to go somewhere as in away from here and their guns.”
CABLE: Nate’s first instinct was to grab his gun and aim it right at the person who put the color on Lana. His second instinct was to try and get the collar off of her. And his second instinct won. He quickly grabbed her and teleported the two of them into the farthest corner of the room, then immediately dove into trying to find a way to help her– even though he already knew that there wasn’t. “I can’t–” Nate didn’t finish his sentence, both hands on the device at her throat as he looked back towards the rest of the action. “I’m sorry.” He was scared– for both her and himself. Getting collared meant that he would be helpless to save himself against the metal clawing his way through his body.
KATE: With an annoyed cock to her brow, Kate pulled the trigger just for good measure and lo and behold, a string of bubbles came out of the chamber. Not exactly the kickback she was looking for. With a frustrated grunt, Kate shifted her grip on the gun and spun, aiming to knock Ripley right in the mouth with it.
LANA: “Oh, @#$@# this. You have to go.” Lana forced herself to say words she really didn’t want to. She knew about his stupid sickness and what it did. “I’ve done this bullshit before. I’m going to be fine.” Because she was an incurable dumbass she fired off one test shot but the hot flash of pain nearly made her vision go black. There was no way she’d be able to get it off of herself. “Please don’t apologize. We’ve already died together once and I’m really @#$@# over this whole thing. So, go.”
CABLE: “I–” Nate cringed when she tried to get the collar off. He shouldn’t have to leave her like this. Frustration took over and his metal hand clenched into a fist before he punched the wall closest to him, leaving a noticeable dent. “Shit. Don’t do anything too stupid, alright?” He forced himself to take in a deep breath and then planted a kiss on her lips before backing away. “I’ll see you soon.” Nate took one last look at her and then activated the device on his wrist, disappearing in a flash of blue light.
RIPLEY: As the gun connected with her face Ripley frowned slightly, grateful she had already protected herself earlier. “Okay, first off, no thank you.” She grabbed Kate’s wrist, twisting it so she could throw the woman backwards towards the wall. Was she powerful? Sure. New to all of  this? To an extent. Her only main fight had been Carol  and everyone knew how that had ended. “I liked you better when you weren’t trying to be a hero.” She hissed, stepping back to survey the room. There was a flash of blue as someone teleported away. Gaze settling on the person left behind, Ripley shook her head. “Time to go to sleep.” The body hitting the ground meant she could move onto the next fighting hero.
PETER: “You go then!” Peter shouted back to Gwen as he webbed two more guns and yanked them out of the officers’ grip. “They already know who I am. This way everyone else has a chance to get out.”
CAROL: The hole the wall made when Kate collided with it suggested that Ripley was more overpowered than Carol originally thought. Honestly, she was surprised Kate didn’t go right through it, either phasing or not. Redirecting her focus, Carol allowed her powers to ignite, illuminating her palms as she aimed the energy blasts straight for Ripley, not bothered by the guards she’d have to go through to get to her. There was a bit of a personal vendetta there, her anger at a lower simmer. “Now’s probably a great time to get out of here.” She tossed at Sam. If it ended up just being the two of them, then so be it.
GWEN: “Oh shut up. I’m not going to leave you.” Not again, her mind filled in. She couldn’t let down yet another Peter Parker. Her dad was completely and totally going to murder her when he found out what was going on. Her suit was moving alongside her webbing but the emission of a high pitched buzz drove her to her knees as the symbiote squirmed and tried to separate from her.
SAM: Shields didn’t work very well in confirmed spaces and Sam couldn’t use it without potentially taking out an ally as well. “I always say no man left behind and these are kids.” That being said, they weren’t looking good. One was already being dragged out collared and unconscious  and the last thing they needed was for anyone else to get hurt. “Any last ditch plans, Cap?”
RIPLEY: Now that one hurt. Ripley’s mouth was tugged into frown as she glared at Carol, pulling herself to her feet. The C.R.A.DL.E. agents were already removing some of the minors but this pointless violence was tiring. “The best thing you can do is let them come with us. They’re safer in a holding cell registering than here where an accident can happen.” To emphasize her point an agent cranked up the volume on the buzz device. “Can we end this now?”
CAROL: Lowering her first, Carol let the charge in her arm die down a bit as Ripley stood back up. She all but shook it off and as Carol’s eyes scanned the room, she almost felt like her desire to push Ripley back was only going to compromise the people around her. And not to mention the building itself. They weren’t outside, they weren’t even in a very large room. As much as she wanted to unload on her, Carol damped the power and shot at Ripley again. Nothing debilitating, but until she focused on her, Carol was going to keep shooting at her. “Leave us and take as many kids as you can. If I can keep her occupied, she can’t control the kids. I don’t know if there’s another option here.”
PETER: Dammit, Gwen. Peter kept his jaw clenched painfully shut to make sure he didn’t snap at her. This was his fight. He was hit hard and he wanted to hit back– and it was better to do that alone. But his anger-fueled adrenaline was beginning to die down, and as it did the rest of the room came into focus. Carol’s blast caught his attention and suddenly, he realized just how stupid this idea of his had been. He wasn’t going to win this one, not without causing more harm than good. He opened his mouth to reply to Gwen when the same high-pitched sound hit him, and he instinctively slammed both hands over his ears to try and block it out. ”No!” She fell to her knees and all Peter could do was watch her and her symbiote struggle. He couldn’t let anything happen to her. “Alright, stop! Stop it! I won’t fight you, just– turn it off!”
RIPLEY: “Would you - knock - it- off??” Ripley raised her voice more than she had before. “Your shots are bouncing back.” Exasperation lined her tone. One day she’d need to learn to rewrite reality without literally having to telegraph what she was planning on doing verbally. “There! That’s the spirit. Let’s all be more like Peter.”
H.A.M.M.E.R: “I’m sorry, Captain, but he won’t be leaving with any of the children. We’re here under direct orders from the United States government.” Carolina said. A gloved agent knelt down to put a collar on the symbiote clothed teenager before another roughly grabbed another underaged hero. “Believe it or not, this is the best course of action for everyone. As an official Commander under C.R.A.D.L.E. I, Carolina Washington, hereby issue the arrests of Peter Parker, Gwendolyne Stacy, Gwendolyn Poole, Nadia Van Dyne, Laura Kinney, Lana Baumgartner and Jean Grey for failure to comply with S.315,  the Underage Superhuman Welfare Act. You will not be read your rights but will be given a full list of legal requirements upon arrival at our facilities. Any further attempts of violence will result in extended consequences. Do we have any other questions?”
GWEN: The sound was gone but they had put a collar on her. Gwen had no powers of her own anymore. Whatever they clamped around her neck was emitting some kind of frequency that stopped the symbiote from being able to compose itself. A few spiders wandered off of her, creeping down across the floor. “Do not be like Peter.” She moaned despite her cotton mouth. As in, Peter go.
SAM: This was a fresh layer of bullshit if they thought that they could waltz in, bang up some kids and then just cart them off to god knows where to do things on their terms. “Some of  these heroes aren’t American, they’re Krakoan. And Empress Neramani isn’t from Earth at all. You better watch what you guys are walking into.”
H.A.M.M.E.R.: “We know exactly what we’re walking into. The law states that any underaged hero operating on American soil is liable and able to be tried. These mutants were born American citizens. They’re under our jurisdiction. But thank you for reminding me of Empress Neramani.” Her gaze drifted over to the feathered Shi’ar. “We have received express permission from Cal’syee Neramani to take Xandra into custody as she is both half mutant and also far underage.” Family politics were messy, but Carolina just followed orders. She was a clean-up specialist, after all. “Your resistance will be noted and recorded.”
CAROL: The glow she was emitting didn’t die down this time as Carol approached Carolina, getting right up in her face. In the corner of her eye, she kept Ridley in sight, ready to send her supercharged ass flying if she had to. “You can take your Act and shove it up your ass for all I care. If you’re going to take these kids, you’re going to have to arrest me too, because I’m not letting you leave with them.”
RIPLEY: Theatrics. That’s all superheroes were. Theatrical little bitches who thought the Earth  orbited around them. Ripley could get into her hatred of Carol Danvers and all she stood for, but at that moment there was more to focus on. The Stone was twitching in her chest and her head snapped to the side to see the Scarlet Witch with magic glowing around her fingers. Could Wanda kick Ripley’s ass? Definitely. Did Ripley get the element of surprise? Definitely. One  word and the brunette went down and the blonde prayed they’d leave before she got back up. With her attention returned to Carol, two words were spoken under her breath before lasers erupted from her eyes and clipped Carol in the temple.
CAROL: If Carolina even made a move, Carol was going to put her fist through her chest. It was impossible not to be seething, to watch the kids, who were barely old enough to even have mastered their abilities, be taken into custody for them. She didn’t battle Thanos or the X-men just for people to be robbed of their freedom, especially not by those who Carol knew were more than eager to weaponize them. Or something worse. In a split moment of distraction, Carol took her focus off of Ripley just in time for her to knock her with a laser blast, forcing her off her planted stance. As she fought to regain her footing, all the energy Carol had been carefully suppressing erupted, engulfing her in one fell swoop. Without thinking, without taking it into care, Carol just shot a mega beam right back at her, her emotions getting the better of her.
PETER: This.. definitely didn’t go as he had wanted it to. Even though the sound wasn’t nearly as devastating to him as it was to Gwen and her suit, it had slowed him down enough that they slipped the collar on her without him being able to stop them. It shifted to a low hum that he was sure was still loud to her, and once he refocused he felt his stomach twist into knots. He looked to her with disbelief and panic as he realized that they were losing. He didn’t want to leave them. Even though he was scared, he was stubborn and defiant and pissed off. But there were other heroes here that were sticking their neck out for them, and because of that.. maybe it was wrong to simply let himself get taken. His mind was full of paradoxes. But Carol was doing a nice job distracting them, which was exactly what he needed right now. “Sorry–” He mumbled a pained last word to Gwen and then took off, aiming for the ceiling to swing over and kick one of the officers down to make an opening for himself. He easily broke the glass on the closest window and then flung through it, not looking back.
ERIK: If there was one thing Erik hadn’t expected to see, it was Wanda being taken down. His daughter was a force to be reckoned with, but this whole situation was new and strange and tonight wasn’t the time to get into what made sense or not. He quickly made his way over to her, ready to fight back if he was met with any resistance as he gently scooped her off the ground. Neither of them were the targets right now, and he was thankful for that as he got them out to head back to Krakoa.
RIPLEY: “Jesus fucking —” the blast from Carol was strong enough to send Ripley tumbling head over heels through the wall. It was yet another reason to despise Carol Danvers even though she had far too many already. For a moment she just laid on the ground spitting out chunks of plaster. She could hear Carolina running her fat mouth and some glass was broken.  Despite the suit and ability to rewrite reality she was new to this. Being some fake ass Avenger wouldn’t change that. Her bones cried out in protest as she pulled herself to her feet, already commanding herself to heal. “You know,” Ripley staggered back into the main room as she  wiped some blood off of her face with one arm. “I really want to kill you. Like really, really want to but they said no. Our rematch can wait for another day. So here’s what’s going to happen: you’re going down. Hard. And when you wake up you’re going to have a nasty headache. Sweet dreams, bitch.” Whatever cosmic power fueled her words took its toll before Ripley straightened and shoved a few locks of hair out of her eyes. “Wrap this up, Washington. Now.”
KATE: The force that Ripley had used to shove Kate back and into the nearest wall had come too fast and too hard and she hadn’t been able to will her body to phase through it in time. Though Kate didn’t know how it would matter — she would’ve either skidded on the floor outside or smacked into another wall. The impact had been powerful enough that it had knocked her out, only coming to to watch Carol crumble and collapse in a heap on the floor. A heart punched in her chest as adrenaline forced her to her feet, pushing through the aches and pains that wanted to keep her ass planted where it was. The impact had been strong enough that she’d either broken her arm or dislocated it, but she just held it as more agents rounded up kids and Ripley kept those who would fight back at bay. “I don’t think we can win this.” she said, not knowing if her voice carried over the commotion.
H.A.M.M.E.R.: The last of the underaged heroes were being collared, cuffed and carted away.  An agent had manage to subdue Sam Wilson and handcuff him to a chair and Carol Danvers was also down. “No, Miss Pryde.” Carolina shook her head. “You’re not going to.”  At her command an agent ambled over to the mutant and grabbed her by the injured arm for leverage before slapping a collar on her throat. “It’s set to turn itself off in an hour. Expect to feel weak and dizzy in the meantime. We very well could have taken you in, but Ms. Frost asked us to avoid doing so if at all possible.” Now that the room was nearly emptied, Carolina regarded the two remaining heroes with a slightly aloof smile. “We’ll be issuing a statement later about the minors. Until then, have a nice evening.” With the heels of her boots crunching over broken glass, Carolina and the H.A.M.M.E.R. agents left.
SAM: Nothing had gone according to plan, and now they had lost six people and an intergalactic diplomat. Carol was out cold and Pryde wasn’t looking too hot either. The Inhumans had escaped with Lockjaw near the beginning and the Asgardians had also left.  Reed and Sue bailing with their kid made sense; they had to get her home. But the others? Sam couldn’t swallow his guilt. He couldn’t even wipe the blood that  was dripping off his temple, the dark skin above his eye turning purple already from the butt of a gun that had taken him down for a few minutes. With both his hands cuffed to the table, it really felt more like a humiliation and a warning. Try to intervene and this is what happens. “Jesus.” He exhaled in one heavy breath. Back-up would be coming shortly to help them assess the situation, but it was too late. They lost. Now they just needed to see where they could go from here.

**********
Since joining the avengers Y/N had been on a few missions. Nothing too big and nothing that required more than two partners. If the shapeshifter’s mind had been more focused on it then she’d be insulted that she wasn’t getting bigger missions, but just like the Winter Soldier her mind was on other matters.
Sitting in her room Y/N flicked through movies on her television in search of something suitable for both her and Bucky.
“Hey doll,” Bucky greeted as he walked into Y/N’s room, a tray of drinks and snacks in hand.
Doll. It was a pet name that had just slipped out of Bucky’s mouth one day. While it was said completely by accident neither Bucky nor Y/N found an issue with it. And after seeing the just barely visible shy glance Y/N had shared with him the first time he said it Bucky made a vow to keep using the pet name.
To tease her. Bucky told himself. To tease her like friends do.
“Hey,” Y/N greeted back as she shifted over in her bed in order to make room for Bucky. Though recently she’d noticed the soldier, no matter how much space he was given, would always sit in a way that left them touching.
Not that Y/N minded.
“Find a movie yet?” Bucky asked as he got into bed.
“No,” Y/N huffed. The woman passed the remote to Bucky, a silent command for him to pick the movie.
“Right, let’s do this then.” He said, clicking on the first movie he saw, which happened to be Brooklyn.
“You picked that for the title.” Y/N said as she reached for her drink.
“No,” Bucky denied, unwilling to tell the shifter that he had absolutely picked the movie because of its link to his home.
“Sure,” Y/N answered with a roll of her eyes which were still all white and still as beautiful as ever to Bucky. “Whatever you say, Brooklyn boy.”
Slowly through the movie Y/N and Bucky drifted closer together. Bucky’s arm curled around Y/N before she curled into his chest, her head on his shoulder and mouth inches away from the man’s neck. I’m cold, she told him before focusing back on the movie. It was a lie, and both of them knew it. Bucky could feel the girls hot breath against the crook of his neck, tickling him with pleasure. Their legs intertwined as they realized they craved more contact from the other.
Soon enough the movie was forgotten about and all they could do was focus on each other.
“What are we doing, Bucky?” Y/N asked as she looked up at the soldier. Back in her days as his trainer at Hydra never would Y/N have thought that she’d be in this type of scenario with Bucky.
“I don’t know, doll.” Bucky admitted. His metal hand came to brush against Y/N’s cheek in a soft caress. His touch leaving behind goose bumps across her skin.
“Do you like it?” Y/N asked with bated breath. Bucky gazed down at her, rolling on the bed so Y/N was beneath him. Propped up on his arms, Bucky made sure to keep his weight off the woman as he looked her over.
Bucky couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt butterflies like this.
“Yes,” he answered truthfully, “do you?” He asked, praying Y/N had the same answer as him.
“Yes,” Y/N whispered. Gazing at Bucky’s baby blue eyes the shifter tilted her head up just as Bucky lowered his. A breath apart they leaned in and-
And FRIDAY’s voice cackles through the speaker in Y/N’s room, demanding they suit up for a mission before the two can even touch lips. With a groan Bucky pulls back, cheeks flushed he goes back to his spot at Y/N’s side. All’s silent between the two before Bucky finally speaks up.
“We’ll talk about this later?” He asks as he gets off of Y/N’s bed and makes his way out of her room.
“Just talk?” Y/N asks with a coy smile as she follows after the soldier. Bucky shakes his head, his lips tilted up in a small smile.
“Not if I have any say about it, doll.”
The debrief for the mission happens once everyone is suited up and in the quinjet. Steve stands in the middle of the floor, hands crossed over his chest and he stares at his team.
“I know this is a surprise mission, but we couldn’t wait on this. A Hydra base was just discovered along the Russian and Ukranian border. We believe they have a large group of civilians,” Steve paused, his head lowering for a moment as a sigh left his lips, “children, about twenty of them. We believe they’ve been taken for experimentation.” Everyone’s breath caught in their throats at Steve’s words, their eyes wide with equal parts shock and disgust.
“That’s fucked up.” Sam breathed from where he sat. Everyone nodded their heads and Steve for once didn’t bother correcting the man on his foul language.
Bucky had lost some of his colour at Steve’s words, his mind working at an anxious speed as he thought about all the horrors he went through at Hydra and how those horrors were now being reigned down upon innocent children. Y/N slipped her hand into Bucky’s own from where she sat to his left, her fingers tracing the metal plates in a soothing manner as she saw the man’s panic and anxiety. No one else seemed to notice the shared touch between Bucky and Y/N and the two were all the more thankful for it.
“We’re going in teams of two to search the base and take out anyone you come across. Once the agents are all down only then do you get the kids out and on this jet and Tony’s.” Everyone nodded along but remained silent, the air thick with tension. “Nat and I are going to take the East side, Sam and Tony in the sky, Y/N and Bucky take West.” Again the jet remained silent.
Landing at the base came all too soon for Bucky, but the soldier put aside his worries in order to focus on the mission. Y/N could see the wall come up in his mind as they stepped off the jet, protecting him from whatever horrors he might see inside, whatever memories it might drudge up. They shared a look, brief and silent yet it held so much weight, so many unspoken words between them and they knew... if they stuck together, they’d make it out on the other side of this mission.
It didn’t take long upon entering the base for the team to realize how out-manned they were. Hydra agents filled the underground halls, taking up every empty space available.
Shoot, kick, doge, punch, grab, shoot, dodge. It truly was like the sea monster Hydra took its name after, with each agent Y/N and Bucky took down two more took their place.
Sweat dripped down Y/N’s face, dripping into her mouth the acid like taste took over the iron tang from her bloody lip. She didn’t know how long the fight had been going on for but with the heavy exhaustion weighing her down she knew it’d been a while. Bucky fought at her side, his metal fist gleaming in the light like a freshly sharpened blade. Each hit with it took down another against and still more were coming at them.
“We need to retreat,” Steve’s voice came through Y/N’s comms system. The shifter had only had eyes on the Captain for a short second at landing before she’d lost sight of him and Nat in the throng of Hydra agents. “Everyone get back on the jet, now.” He ordered. Neither Bucky nor Y/N wasted any time upon hearing Steve’s order. Both agents turned and with loaded guns and fists flying, made their way out of the base and back to the jet.
They were the last to arrive, injured and panting the jet door closed after them just in time before the bullets began hitting the jet. It was almost comical, the small pings that sounded as the bullets hit the exterior of the jet. One after another like gravol hitting a car as it drove along a dirt road the bullets hit them. Tony was on this jet rather than the other, allowing the computer system to fly it rather his own hands he opted for the jet that housed the rest of his team.
“Tony get us out of here!” Sam growled out.
“I can’t.” Tony breathed out.
“What do you mean, I can’t?” Sam fired back.
It was then that everything went silent. The pinging of bullets coming to a sudden halt, the only sound in the jet to be heard was the team’s heavy breathing. It was almost peaceful, save for the threat that hung about them like a guillotine blade. Y/N stepped closer to Bucky, the soldier doing the same. He was just reaching out to her when a thickly accented male voice spoke through the jets speakers.
“Good day, Avengers,” the man’s voice came out like a purr, as though the team was a mistress he’d had the pleasure of seducing, “we’ve taken over your ship, but of course, you’ve already come to realize this by now. You know what we want. Give us the Winter Soldier.” Slowly, all eyes turned to Bucky. The soldier hung his head low, knowing that with the situation they were in they had no other option but to follow Hydra’s orders. However, it seemed Steve had known exactly what Bucky was thinking, for he shook his head, his stare locked on his friend.
“You’re not handing yourself over Bucky.” The soldier looked up, his own head shaking, a silent disagreement with the Captain. “Bucky-” Steve started before he was cut off by the thickly accented voice coming through the jets speakers again.
“If being stranded here isn’t enough incentive to hand over the Winter Soldier then perhaps I might sweeten the pot.” Chills crawled up Y/N’s spine, her sweat and blood suddenly chilling on her skin at the man’s threat.
Tony was the first to see it as he stood at the front of the jet. It was his choked off gasp that caught the others attention, bringing them all forward until they were all looking out of the jets glass shield.
“No,” Bucky gasped, his breath catching in his throat as he stared forward. He was shaking, trembling at the sight before him. They were all shaking.
Walking into the open field before them was a line of agents, each with a gun in one hand and a struggling child in another. They stopped in a long line before the jet and the Avengers were left facing all twenty children, each with tears pouring down their cheeks and a gun to their heads.
“You know what we want,” the man spoke again to the team though he directed his next words to the soldier and only the soldier, “you can make this end, Soldat. Just come with us and the others can leave, no violence, no bloodshed. You can even have the kids.” He purred. “Don’t and well…” the man paused and Bucky sucked in a rattling breath, “...these kids’ blood will be on your hands and your hands alone, Soldat. You have thirty seconds to step out of the jet before we start killing.” Y/N looked over to Bucky, who’s hands shook at his sides, his head bent forward as he stared at the jet’s dark floor, away from the childrens crying forms.
Y/N knew what he was going to do, she knew the soldier would sacrifice himself in order to keep these children and his team safe. It’s what they all would have done. It’s what Y/N would have done, and so, it’s what she did do.
“Sit down, Bucky.” She spoke softly as Bucky went to the back of the jet, his hand reaching for the button that would lower the door for him to step out. Bucky shook his head as he stood before her, taking a step closer to Y/N as she shook her head at him.
“Y/N, this is our only option, they want me. I have to go.”
“I know,” Y/N answered, her hands coming to rest on Bucky’s biceps, “they want the Winter Soldier, and they’ll get the Winter Soldier. But they aren’t getting you.” Bucky’s head tilted to the side in question, not understanding the woman’s words until suddenly it hit him head on. He’s eyes grew wide in horror as he stepped towards her, his hands grasping onto her own.
“Y/N, no, you can’t.” Y/N gave a soft smile back as she looked at Bucky, her eyes roaming over him, her hands reaching for his face in order to trace the lines of his skin, building up the memory of him in her mind.
She prayed that the memory of him would be enough to keep her warm at night until the end of her time.
“I hurt you in Hydra,” she began. Tears welled up behind her eyes as she looked at Bucky. “I hurt you and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t regret that. There’s days that I wish I’d never met you, that I think how better off you’d be without me in your life,” Bucky shook his head frantically at the woman’s words, tears of his own spilling down his cheeks just like Y/N’s, “but I’ve come to realize that this was all meant to be, that we were meant to be,” Y/N stepped further into Bucky, forcing him to take a step back, and another and another until he was pressed against the jets wall, “you’ve done your time, Bucky. You’ve fought your battles and you’ve come out the other side,” Y/N’s hands slipped down from Bucky’s face, her hands reaching for his own, “it’s my time to go to battle now Bucky, for us.” Y/N pressed her lips to Bucky’s in a desperate kiss. Tears slipped down their cheeks as they shared a last moment of love. Their first kiss, and their last.
It was when Y/N had pulled away from their kiss, that Bucky realized what the woman had done.
The snap of the cuffs around his wrists and the metal beam along the jet’s wall rang out in the silence between them. And as Y/N stepped back Bucky was filled with a nauseating horror. He shook his head, pulling at the cuffs that held him he looked to the shifter, his gaze pleading with her to let him go.
She didn’t. She looked to the team, a last goodbye in her gaze.
“Take care of each other.” Bucky shook his head, small please and no’s spilling from his lips, all intertwined with her name.
“Y/N, please, don’t do this, please…”
“I love you Bucky.” Y/N’s said softly. It was her final goodbye before she shifted and Bucky was left staring at a carbon copy of himself.
“Y/N, please, don’t…” he begged. But it was too late.
With the press of a button Y/N stepped off the quinjet and handed herself over to Hydra.

Chapter 1
Tumblr media
The Autumn wind rustles the golden hued leaves upon the trees near the school yard as you pull your jacket closer around you and try to juggle your bag while unlocking the car door. You fall into the seat exhausted from the day giving a little sigh of relief. Laura piles into the passenger side. “You know, if I didn’t know better I would think today was Halloween as excited as the class was.” You hum in agreement pulling out of the drive.
“All I know is that I need a break and to see my boyfriend,” you giggle. It had been four weeks since you had seen Buck and even though you talked almost daily or even facetimed it wasn’t the same.
Laura gives you a teasing smile. “You know, I don’t think I have ever seen you like this.”
“Like what?”
“Like a giggling school girl.” You give her a sideways glance as your phone rings playing a familiar tone. “Oh, and speaking of Greek god, look who’s calling.”
“Don’t you dare…” you tell her as you answer.
“Hello.”
“Hi Darlin’, how are you?”
“Hey, Barnes! I’m great, how are you?” Laura yells into the speaker. Your face goes red. Bucky snickers at her and you let out a frustrated growl.
“I’m good. How’s my girl today? Are you keeping her out of trouble?” He teases.
“You know I am, besides we are….”
“You do realize he called to talk to me.” Bucky lets out a loud chuckle.
“Fine. Fine. Have your man. Hey Barnes, do you have any single friends you can hook me up with?” Laura continues ignoring you.
“That can be arranged, Laura.” You can tell Bucky is smiling and enjoying teasing you. “In fact, I was calling to talk to you two about . . .”
A female voice breaks into the conversation behind him “Bucky, come on I need you to help me with this….” This new strange voice catches you off guard, sending your mind into a tailspin. It drips with seduction and intrigue. You grip the steering wheel of your car tighter, your knuckles almost turning white.
“Sure, Doll,” he answers, sending nervous energy down your spine. Your whole body tenses and Laura can tell. She gives you a concerned glance. Who in the hell is this? Why is he calling her Doll? What is she to him? No, he is not like your ex, he is not a cheat. Your thoughts continue to run wild as you pull over onto the curb in front of the coffee shop to let Laura out. In fact, you forget that he is still on the line and has been talking to you, until you hear him call your name.
“Y/N, so what do you think, can you come?”
“I’m ugh sorry, what? I ugh guess I spaced out for a moment.”
“I asked if you would be my date for this Halloween party on Friday.”  You hear the female voice again and Bucky’s muffled response that he was coming.
 “I don’t know if I can…” you say bluntly.
“What? Why?” Bucky’s voice is laced with mild concern now as Laura motions to you to call her later as she gets out of the car. She knows your past and how badly you got burnt.
“I just….”
“Come on James..” you hear the unknown voice say again and now you blood runs cold.
“In a moment, Doll.”
“Who is that?” You snap.
“Y/n? What’s wrong? Talk to me.” He commands in a crisp tone.
“Just let’s talk about it later, James.” His given name stings him like venom as it rolls off your tongue. “Besides, doesn't your ‘Doll’ need you?” Bucky lets out a frustrated sigh as he runs his flesh fingers through his hair.  He looks over at Natasha who is waiting on him so they can start the debrief about an upcoming mission. She raises an impatient eyebrow at him. “Go, I’m sure whoever needs your attention is more important than I am right now.”
“Fine.” He answers in a crisp tone ending the call. You look down at your shaking hands as the phone call ends. You pull away headed toward your apartment with tears in your eyes and old memories from your past haunting your mind.
Tumblr media
“What’s wrong?” Nat questions as Bucky shoves the phone into his pocket.
“I don’t fucking know. But I would really like to know what the hell is wrong with my girlfriend,” he answers angrily as he pushes the double glass doors to the conference room open with a muffled bang.
Two hours later another punching bag was demolished, it’s contents scattered on the dark polished wood floors. Bucky walks over and picks up another bag to hang it onto the hook. However, when he turns back around Sam is standing in his way his hands shoved into his jean pockets.  Clint is leaning  against the door, his arms crossed over his broad chest.
“What did that bag ever do to you Tin-Man?” Sam jokes trying to lighten the mood.
“Fuck off.”
“Hey now, I came to help you. So drop the bag and sit your ass down.”  Bucky squints his eyes at him and than glances towards Clint who is not moving.
“Do what he says, Buck. We know you are not ok so stop trying to bullshit a bullshitter.”
Bucky sits down on the bench in front of the wall looking between the two men again. He knows his friends won’t let this go until they have their say or he gets the argument with y/n off his chest. “So, first fight huh?” Sam asks with a small chuckle. Bucky responds with an angry glare. “I take that as a yes. So let me guess, she heard Natasha over the phone and didn’t know who she was?” Bucky shifts looking at the balls of his feet then back up. “I’m right!” Sam claps his hands in response. “Easy fix man, tell her that she is your co-worker. I’m sure she has heard of Tasha before and…”
“Then why did she get so mad about it?” He snaps unwrapping the blue boxing tape off his hands.
“I don’t know. Maybe it's a past relationship thing. Maybe she had a bad day. But I think you need to ask her instead of taking it out on a defenseless bag.” Bucky rubs his aching head. “Another thing to consider is what you called Nat,” Sam trails off.
“What do you mean, what I called Nat?”
“You call her Doll right? It’s a pet name for a girlfriend or lover right? Well, some women may think….”
“So what? I called Tasha “Doll”. It's not like we are screwing. WE haven’t been together in years.” Buck responds angrily cutting Sam off. Clint walks over towards the two men.
“No one is saying that. What we are saying is that y/n likes you and you like her. More than any woman you’ve dated in a long time, she makes you happy. Work it out. Tell her about Tasha.”
“I don’t want to fuck this up…” Buck grumbles.
“Then talk to y/n,” Sam states bluntly. Bucky gets up and grabs his satchel.
"Doll is for your current lover not past you dumbass and who calls them doll anyway. Where are you going?” Clint questions as Buck pushes the gym doors open.
“To talk things out with my real Doll.”

“I can’t take this anymore.” Febuwhump Day 2
Have a little bit of something from my sleep deprived brain! I thought a slight continuation from day 1 was in order so enjoy some more Bucky whump!
**TW - swearing, slight violence, mild intentional harm**
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The compound was filled with laughter and loud voices when Bucky and Steve arrived back from a mission. It hadn’t been a difficult one and was over within a couple of days. They’d managed to sort things out with the FBI and SHIELD and be debriefed too, and they were both looking forward to a few days off with the rest of the team.
“Hey guys!” Steve said when they entered the communal area where most of the avengers were sat. Many of them waved or said hi in response, not really looking at them until Bucky walked more into the room. They then fell silent, turning to look at him. Wanda grew pale and excused herself, leaving the room in a hurry. The rest of the team not daring to meet his eyes. He huffed and headed straight to his room for a shower.
Bucky asked Friday to lock his door then began to peel off his suit, he hadn’t taken it off since they’d left two days ago so it was a huge relief when he finally got to remove it. He spent a moment looking at his reflection in the mirror. He looked tired, and there was a set to his jaw that hadn’t been there before he got off the Quinjet. He made a point to unclench his teeth and stretch his aching muscles before turning the shower on to as hot as he could stand it, then got into the shower to wash the grime off his body.
Bucky was partway through shampooing his hair when Friday alerted him that there was someone at his door.
“Tell them I’ll be out in a minute; I’ll just finish off in here.” He said to the AI.
“Of course, sir” Friday responded. Bucky made no effort to speed up the end of his shower. His visitor could wait whilst he scorched himself under the burning water to try and rid himself of the funny feeling crawling up his spine. It had been doing that every time he was in the compound since the training mission catastrophe. He’d forgiven Wanda immediately, making sure that he found her as soon as he was discharged by Dr Cho to tell her as such. Tony had taken a little longer, and he was still quite pissed with him for suggesting cheating in the first place, but even Bucky couldn’t deny that no one knew how Wanda’s powers would have affected him.
The problem was that everyone had begun to treat him like glass. It was a though they thought one wrong move would send him dropping to the floor again. He couldn’t get it across to them, that it was a one-time thing, so they continued to avoid him as best they could. All of them except Steve of course, Steve knew that Bucky was fine but even reassurances from his best friend didn’t stop him from feeling like an outcast; especially after he had put so much effort into building the Avengers’ trust. He sighed heavily and turned off the shower, grabbing a towel to wrap around his waist.
Upon opening the door, he was greeted with the presence of Peter Parker, Tony Stark’s protégée, who looked like he was going to be sick with nerves.
“Hello Mr… um Mr Bucky Sir.” Peter mumbled. Bucky moved to walk past him and begin to dry off and get dressed.
“Hey kid, is everything okay?” He didn’t look over at Peter as he talked, trying to make the boy as comfortable around him as possible, make him see that he was just as normal as he had been before the accident. Peter swallowed.
“Um yeah- yeah, Mr Stark got takeout and wondered if you wanted to join us? He got shawarma.” Peter was fidgeting, clearly feeling very awkward. His eyes grew wide as he suddenly had a realisation. “But- but if you don’t like shawarma, we can get something else! You don’t have to have that! Just tell me what you want instead, and I’ll get it for you.”
Bucky sighed again, feeling anger rise up in his chest, but he reigned it in, the kid was just trying to be nice.
“Shawarma sounds great Peter! Tell Tony I’ll be out in 5 minutes.” Peter nodded quickly and then turned to leave. “Oh, and Peter?” Peter stopped short at his name, practically holding his breath. “Tell those guys to save me some, we both know what they’re like!” Bucky watched as Peter nodded again and hurried out of the door, closing it behind him.
Bucky sighed heavily and finished off getting dressed. He tried his best to remove the bad mood he was currently in from his facial expression, but it didn’t seem to be working. He was just so mad at his friends, and at himself, for changing everything. For treating him like he was something to be scared of or careful about. He was a super soldier for Christ’s sake! He collected himself and exited his room, dressed casually in a pair of jeans and a nice shirt, with the top 3 buttons undone as he was too hot from his shower.
The room went silent as he entered, for the second time that day. Bucky plastered a smile onto his face and sat down at the large table. Steve pushed a box towards him, and conversation tentatively resumed. It was very clear that they were all avoiding having to engage with him in both nervousness and something else – something that he couldn’t quite put his finger on. The hushed conversations continued whilst he ate, and he felt anger begin to build up in him. His food started to taste a bit like carboard, his metal hand clenching involuntarily.
“That’s enough!” he yelled, slamming his fist onto the table. He noticed that Peter jumped at the noise, but he didn’t have the capacity to feel guilty in that moment. Everyone’s eyes were on him, staring in shock. “I’m damn sick of you all treating me like a piece of glass! I’m not just gonna fucking shatter in front of you.” He took a deep shaking breath, staring down at the table.
“I can’t take this anymore. I feel like an outcast all over again, and I didn’t even do anything!”
Steve reached over and grasped his hand, shooting him a small smile as he did so. A hint of pride was visible on his face, which meant that Steve had been waiting for this outburst for quite a while. There was a beat of silence whilst the group processed what had just happened. Surprisingly, Peter was the first to speak up.
“I’m sorry we made you feel like that Mr Buck- sorry, Bucky,” he corrected himself quickly, “I promise not to get nervous talking to you anymore. I actually really like you.” Bucky smiled gently at him, grateful for the vote of confidence.
Tony then spoke up.
“I take full blame for all of this. I called a meeting whilst you were knocked out in the medbay, and I told everyone to be careful around you. I just felt so guilty for being the cause of the Wanda-“ Wanda shot him a dark look, “I mean – the training incident – that I didn’t want to risk it happening again.” He stood slowly and looked directly at Bucky, outstretching an arm as an offering for a handshake. “If I promise not to make decisions like that without your consent again, will you promise not to scare the shit out of my kid again?”
A peace offering. Bucky hesitated.
“I promise everything will go back to normal.” Tony looked thoughtful, “we can even rent one of those shitty 80’s action movies you like for movie night and I’ll force everyone to watch the whole damn thing.”
“Promise?”
Tony chuckled, “Yeah, I promise.”
Bucky nodded and stood, grasping Tony’s outstretched arm in his flesh one, shaking it firmly. The glint of humour had returned to his eye and he looked contemplative as he sat back down.
“I think I’ll go for Terminator for movie night, I don’t think we’ve watched it enough.” Bucky joked. There was a collective round of groans and chuckles from the group as the avengers softened around him once more. The conversations restarted with a renewed vigour and Bucky smiled, pleased that things could finally go back to the way they were. Steve grinned at him.
“I knew you’d do that sooner rather than later.”
“What do you mean?”
“Sam and I had a bet on how long it would take you to lose your cool. He said a week, I said 3 days.” Steve paused, smiling, “Sam owes me 10 bucks.” He began laughing as Bucky whacked him in the chest, and Sam grumbled on his other side, discreetly passing over the money from his losing bet.

Tony meeting Peter
@kawasakikat requested Peter meeting Tony and, honestly, I wanted to write more but had to restrain myself... Maybe i’ll do a followup, who knows? Apologies for any OOC-ness :)
Tony hated press conferences with a vengeance; the lights were too bright, the reporters were rude and demanding with little respect for those they were aiming questions at, and the other members of the Avengers were absolutely useless at answering the multitudes of queries fired at them from their audience. That was why Tony was very much not looking forwards to the imminent press conference following their latest world-saving endeavour.
They were backstage, everyone decked out in their uniforms bar Tony who had simply donned his usual sneaker-suit combo - there was no way he was lugging his armour around just for the sake of some dumbass journalists. Looking over the top of his aviators, Tony sighed. Press conferences with everyone on the team present? Hellish. God, he could already see Cap stressing over the mini-debrief he had to give to begin with, a pre-prepared thing jotted down on neat flashcards courtesy of one Agent Coulson. Wanda, Vision, Nat, and Clint were standing in amiable silence beside the door to the small stage they’d be sat upon, Sam, Bucky, and Thor hovering awkwardly behind Steve as the man rehearsed. Rolling his eyes, Tony turned his attention back to Agent as their time out of the public eye drew to a close. He heard the weak sigh Cap gave as they were announced and, one by one, the Avengers filed out onto the platform they were supposed to spend the next hour and a half on.
Almost immediately, flashes started popping, voices clamouring over one another to be heard. Tony felt the familiar tightness behind his eyes and pushed his glasses up his nose to block the worst of the flashes. Cap made his way to the little microphone stand and Tony tuned him out as he began to speak. It was the usual drivel; what had caused the incident (aliens…), who had instructed the Avengers to intervene (the WSC…), what damage control was in place (as much as they could afford…), and what clean-up efforts were being made (whatever Stark Industries and S.H.I.E.L.D could afford… so a lot). Tony had heard it a million times before; every time the Avengers saved the world a press conference followed suit.
The speech itself didn’t take long and all too soon Tony found himself taking Steve’s place at the microphone, sending a plastic smile at the plethora of journalists seated before him. Immediately, hands began to rise. Spotting a timid-looking man sitting near the back with his hand semi-raised, Tony pointed confidently. The man in question cleared his throat.
“You mentioned the threat was of an intergalactic nature? Do the Avengers, and by association Stark Industries, have measures in the work to prevent the number of Alien attacks in the future? This is, after all, the fourth in the last sixteen months.”
And so it began. Tony pasted on a positive demeanour and got to work answering the abundance of, either completely ignorant or simply plain rude, questions that the reporters sent their way. Occasionally, the other Avengers would pipe up, but for the most part Tony took the reigns and led the conference the way he had been doing since adolescence. By the time they were just over half-finished, he had them eating out of the palm of his hand, the more insulting reporters kicked out without hesitation whilst those respectful and with genuine enquiries remained. It was only when one reporter piped up that things got remotely interesting.
Tony had selected a woman seemingly at random, skimming the crowd to find anyone looking especially impatient. The moment he pointed to her, her polite smile turned vindictive.
“Mr. Stark, what do you have to say about the recent break-up between you and Miss Potts? Was there an incident that provoked it or did you simply grow tired of the commitment? Your track record gives the impression that your commitment issues may be to blame.”
Tony’s jaw dropped. Yes, he and Pepper had split a few months prior but until now no-one had been blasé enough to broach the topic. Blasé and straight-up rude. Before Tony could formulate an answer, another voice piped up, a snarky drawl that immediately had the man’s gaze shifting across the room till it landed on the speaker.
“How is this at all relevant to this event? As far as I was aware, this conference was held to discuss the recent attacks and the contribution the Avengers made to saving the world… again.”
The man who spoke appeared to be around about Tony’s age, dark hair pushed back from his face and striking blue eyes twinkling with mirth. His thin lips were tugged up into a smirk that made something unfamiliar curl warm and tight in Tony’s stomach. Hearing the obnoxious spluttering of the invasive reporter, Tony couldn’t contain a chuckle. The other man shifted to look up towards the stage, meeting Tony’s gaze.
“Something funny, Mister Stark? I was simply trying to keep your conference on track,” he announced, a teasing lilt to his voice.
“Ah, I appreciate it, honestly. God knows somebody has to. I do so try my best but… well, you know how unpredictable people can be Mister…?”
“Hale. Peter Hale. From ‘The Beacon.’ A pleasure to formally make your acquaintance, even if it did involve me defending your honour at your own event.”
Tony barked out a laugh and grinned wolfishly at Peter. Reaching up to his face, he tugged his glasses off and tucked them into the front pocket of his suit.
“The pleasure is all mine, Peter. I’ve read a few of your articles actually; I’m particularly fond of that series you do… what’s it called again? Oh, yes. I do believe you call it your ‘Weekly Review of Tony Stark’s Ass.’ The commentary on my leather pants really spoke to me.” Tony chuckled, watching the way the corners of Peter’s eyes crinkled in amusement whilst the faintest of flushes became apparent under the fluorescent glow of the lights.
“It’s well received, I assure you. The readers love it. My personal favourite, though, is my ‘Iron Man; the Real Leader of the Avengers’ segment. It’s why I’m here today actually. Gathering new material, you know how it is.”
Peter held up the clipboard in his hands and gave it a half-wave, Tony following the movement with his eyes. The man on stage nodded his head in amusement, feeling the tell-tale brush of heat creep up the back of his neck. He was familiar with the segment in question; it was his go-to reading material when the self-doubt and worthlessness came creeping in. Peter was always glowing in his reports of the advancements S.I was making, of the things Tony had been up to that the general press never really wanted to report (the hospital visits, the Make-A-Wish trips, the donations and free-of-charge appointments with Veterans and the likes), and in his adventures as Iron Man, with or without the Avengers. Many times had he made clear his opinion that Tony was the best-suited to lead their ragtag group of Superheroes, backing up every point he made with such a broad plethora of evidence that people couldn’t really argue. Peter’s segments practically had their own fan clubs, and Tony was thrilled to put a face, a personality, to the name.
“Ah, I see. Using my pain and suffering for your own selfish gain,” Tony teased. “I should have known you were too good to be true.”
“Mister Stark I assure you, your pain and suffering are the furthest thing from what I want.”
And suddenly the mood was a lot more serious. Peter’s entire being screamed sincerity and Tony found himself speechless. The duality of the reporter was astounding and it took a moment for the man to regain his voice and reply.
“It’s alright, I was just messing with you, but you knew that, right? Thanks, though. Seriously. It’s not often people in your position actually care about the person they’re reporting about.”
At that moment, Tony would swear Peter’s eyes blazed a bright blue, flashing intensely before returning to their usual state. Thinking it must simply have been a trick of the light, he smiled wanly.
“Well I am most unlike most people in my position.”
Sucking in a breath through his teeth, Tony opened his mouth to respond when a pointed cough from behind him interrupted. Before he could say another word, he heard Coulson announce that ‘That’s all we’ve got time for. Thank you for your questions.’ And then he was being ushered, roughly, off of the stage. Cap was hissing in his ear but Tony didn’t pay him any attention whatsoever, trying instead to find Peter in the surging crowd of reporters. There was still so much he wanted to say, to talk with the man about. Vowing that he would find the reporter as soon as he could lose the rest of the team, Tony let himself be dragged away backstage.

Sunburst - S.R (7/10)
Tumblr media
Summary: After years of solitude, you sought out the color of life – you just didn’t think it would end up like this. (Enhanced!Reader/Steve Rogers).
Prompt: “I think I just asked you out on a date.”
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6
Masterlist
A/N: This is for @captain-ariel-barnes writing challenge. We are getting closed to the end and the revelations of the MC’s background, please enjoy Tony’s chapter! As always, I am sorry if it sucks.
Feedback is always appreciated.
It starts before you even plan on going, the thought so many people around  you send shivers down your spine like spider webs. You don’t paint for anything, just sit in the silence of your painting room for days. The dreams made of color are coming back stronger than before, which only causes your headaches to come back stronger than ever before. You knew this was a possibility when you took up the Avengers project, but you didn’t expect it to hurt this much.
You hate your powers and though you had accepted the hurt, you still disliked being around people.
My diamond. My dear girl, you’ll change everything for us.
You groan at the memory, ready to scream as pink darkens to nearly a solid red, but before anything else can happen a voice echoes loudly--
“Mr. Stark has agreed to be shadowed for the following week,” F.R.I.D.A.Y’s voice rings out in the little room, as you groan in acceptance.
You let out a choked sob, as you can hear someone knocking at the door but you can’t find the will to get up or say anything at the moment. You were going to into the city for the first time in a long time, and you knew deep down this wouldn’t turn out well.
If you need anything, just holler. We’re not that far away.
It’s only been a couple of hours since you had been picked up by the driver you have meet before --Happy?-- but you are already trying to find a million different ways to ground yourself at the onslaught of color that begins to blur as you enter the city. Streaks of colors and flashes of all kinds of emotions make you feel nauseous, as you lean against the window and groan.
You try to think of Wanda’s cooking and her subtle smile with Vision. You hope that the sound of Sam’s laughter drowns out everything else. You try to take yourself to the grassy area and the smell of wood and flowers that you were so used to, but also a smell of aftershave and cologne that you were sure belonged to Captain Rogers.
You let out a steady sigh, as the car stops and Happy declares with a cautious green light: “Welcome to the Avengers Tower!”
You get out the back of the car, starting at the dark monochrome glory in front of you with a frown, as you try your hardest to ignore that glittering colored lights moving on the sidewalks. You pull your canvas bag closer to you than before, in a means to protect yourself.
“How are you enjoying New York?” Pepper can’t help but ask, as the three of you share a quick breakfast in their shared floor level in the Avengers Tower. You were supposed to follow Mr. Stark for the whole week, the first two were full with board meetings and time with Pepper Potts -- not that it bothered you.
“Not much,” you remark as her red flounders for a bit in worry, “I’m really more of a country gal.”
“Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll be back in no time,” Tony grins, as you can’t help but be for a confused for a moment, “I am sure a certain Captain is missing you right now.”
You raise a curious eyebrow at this statement, as Pepper glares at her fiance. Outside of that, breakfast moves forward without a hitch, as you come to realize the sight of the couple, as their colors pop and mingle in response to each other is extremely relaxing. It lulls you into a false sense of security for those business meetings you are suppose to be shadowing.
Men with darker colors that send chills up your spine, though there are those that shine like the sun as they talk about finance and the new philanthropy that Stark Industries is looking towards creating for the city and beyond that. Everyone sparkles in their own way, especially Mr. Stark, even when he isn’t talking but one bright, determined light outshines everyone else.
It isn’t until close to end of the second day when you realize that all you had been sketching or designing had been related to Pepper Potts in some way, but Tony had and honestly he couldn’t blame you. So, at the end of the last meeting, when you are ready to head back to the Tower and they are going to grab a late dinner, he stops you.
“You know,” Tony starts off with a smile, “I am sure Pepper would be thrilled if you ever decided to create something personally for her.”
You smile just how his shade of red changes to match her own -- love really was a beautiful thing.
“I’m already thinking about it, Mr. Stark,” you declare softly, as you had already been thinking about seashells and autumn leaves back from upstate New York.
“Ah, good job, kid.”
You spend the next couple of days shadowing Mr. Stark on his own -- watching him do a number of philanthropist events, giving speeches here and there, hanging out with Dr. Banner in the lab (much to your confusion), and endless tinkering with his suits as if he preparing for a mission, even though he --like Captain Rogers-- were in limited capacity to what they could thanks to the Accords.
You think in reds and different shades of gold with bright flashes of circuitry on what you could create in regards to Tony Stark. You didn’t think everyday gray would be important until Friday afternoon when he has you sitting in some rehabilitation building. You look around for a moment, as Mr. Stark tells you to wait.
That’s when you see it -- gray with a red core are burns intensely.  You try stop yourself from gaping at the sight of Colonel James Rhodes, as he walks up to you with a warm and familiar smile with Tony simply introduces him as Rhodey.
“Ah, you’re the artist Pepper and S--” Rhodey starts off, only to have Tony give him a look, “I mean, Pepper and Tony are so fond off. Finally good to put a name to the face.”
“It’s an honor to meet you, Colonel Rhodes,” you admit, as he pulls out his hand for you to shake it. You return it only to feel something you had never felt before.
Pop! Pop! Pop!
Something akin to rocky candy pops on your skin, as you shake hands with the man. He gives you a questioning look, gray moving in a way you had never seen before, but you simply smile and try to stay come at whatever might be happening. You say nothing and neither does Rhodey, as Tony moves forward with telling you stories of their youth together. However, you keep your body more reigned in than before.
You feel that your aversion to seeing people’ colors has calmed down during the week, but you have grown scared of touching anything since the incident with Colonel Rhodes. You haven’t slept well since you have been trying to figure out exactly what was going on with you, though now you were trying to figure out why the shy Stark intern had such a strange pattern of light red -- in thin strips and entangled together, like a spider’s web. However, before you can do anything else, he’s out the door with a nervous chuckle and a wave.
Peter Parker was a strange, though endearing kid.
“Are you going tonight’s party?” Mr. Stark’s voice takes you out of your thoughts, as he smile for a bit at the sight of spiders drawn on the corners of your sketchpad.
“I don’t think that’s good idea, Mr. Stark,” you complain lightly, as Tony just shakes his head. “Especially if you want to make me some type of special guest, I really don’t like that type of stuff.”
“ Just like, ” Tony sighs out, as you stare at him in confusion,”Look, I won’t out you, especially before the project is over. But, wouldn’t it be nice to take a break?”
You frown for a moment, knowing that he has a point and he is paying you but you know something bad will come out of this -- it always does.
You agree nonetheless to see Mr. Stark give you a cheeky grin and a pop of flashy red for a job well done.
An hour, you last one whole hour between the twirling lights and endless darkness of the party before someone tries to grab you.
It burns, as you let out a silent scream and proceed to leave the room, running towards where you had been staying in the Avengers Tower, unaware that someone was watching the whole time.
Steve arrives to the Towers towards the weekend after a short mission and while he is tired, he is also excited to be back home and if he was being truthful -- to have a certain someone near the city as well. Steve knew that you were more accustomed to the New York countryside, but he was still that kid from Brooklyn and was hopeful to maybe show you around the city -- to show you the some new things and what he had learned since coming out of the ice. But, it seemed like Tony had other plans for you.
Steve begins to settle in for the night after the debrief when he hears it. The rush of a familiar set of footsteps as a certain someone runs to where one of the many bathrooms is located. Mother hen mode kicking in, Steve grabs a water bottle and a towel before running to where  you are-- his sensitive hearing picking up the retching sounds and he can’t help but wonder what had happened.
He picks up his pace, only to see the bathroom door is open and you are sitting on the floor next to the opening of the shower. Steve wishes there was better time to tell you how pretty you look in that navy blue dress, but your safety overrides everything else at the moment. You are letting out heavy breathes and there are tears running down your face, as you let out a small moan of pain.
“Hey, hey,” Steve walks into the bathroom and kneels at your side,”What’s wrong? What happened?”
“Too much feeling, c-color, ” you manage to say, but it doesn’t make much sense to him.
You grasp his hand and groan at the worry and mixed bag of emotions that you suddenly feel, as his blue wanes from dark to light blue like an ocean might. You sigh at the familiarity of it all, but you’re still too hypersensitivity from the party to do anything more, as Steve starts to question.
“Did you eat or drink something?” Steve asks cautiously, as you shake your head.
“Is it because of your powers?” he asks again, as you place his cool hand on your cheek. Steve can’t help but double over for a moment at the sudden wave of nauseous he’s feeling, as you give him a soft smile -- almost in relief that some of the feeling has left you.
You only nod meekly, before blacking out completely.

send me five times kissed for a drabble about five times our muses kissed - you pick which muse/s get the kisses x
@deadpoolxandxfriends
Such a long time coming. Warning the first one mentions some smutty things at the very end. The rest are all sfw and pretty cute if I do say so myself. Also these are barely proofed but hope they make sense. Love you babe!
Kiss # 1
The first time they kiss is unexpected, hard, needy, feverish even. Open mouthed with teeth bumping and more tongue than necessary. Grunts, whimpers, cries and moans bubbling up from throats, mingling in harmony with all other sounds of passionate fucking. An explosion of sexual tension built up over the past few hours, which is exactly how long they’ve known one another. Alison had heard stories about Bucky. Steve was a long time colleague, sometimes adversary, and they had grown closer in recent years, especially since she’d taken on her new role at S.H.I.E.L.D. Still, no matter his stories, the recountings from others or the things she’s read about in Bucky’s file, nothing quite prepares her for actually meeting him for the first time.
Her schedule had been all over the place that day. After finally slaying multiple mountains of paperwork Ali had changed into spare gym clothes and moseyed down to Avengers Tower’s state of the art exercise facility, fancying a workout before heading home to crash. It was sometime after midnight and she hadn’t expected to find anyone there. Harsh fluorescent lights glinting off silver metal had been a dead giveaway to his identity. For a few moments Alison found herself captivated by the way the muscles of his arms rippled beneath not only flesh but seemingly the metal as well as Bucky remained absorbed in pummeling a poor punching bag. Luckily for that bag it wasn’t facing Steve in a crabby mood. She’d heard Tony lament about buying stock with how often Steve destroyed them. Bucky appeared less intent on annihilating the bag than he was on tiring himself out.
Ali wasn’t sure how long she stood transfixed before finally clearing her throat but it would probably be an embarrassing number of minutes. If there had been more people around she may have just gotten on with her workout without interrupting but she’d been cooped up in her office for the past few hours and was craving some kind of personal interaction. Plus, somehow she’d yet to be introduced to the man, the myth, the legend.
“Wasn’t expecting anyone up this late.” Ali strode toward him confidently, hand extending outward when she was a few feet away and a beaming, friendly smile stretched across her face. “I’m Alison Blaire, SHIELD’s Mutant Liaison and friend of Steve’s. You must be Bucky. I’ve heard a bunch about you. Nice to finally meet you in person.” She was being overly chatty but couldn’t reign it back.
Apparently Steve had mentioned her to Bucky as well so things weren’t completely awkward. He’d shaken her hand and then they’d spent the following couple hours working out alongside one another. Alison didn’t make a habit of doing such elongated gym sessions but if she was being honest much of the time was spent ogling. Yeah it was probably a creeper thing to do and she wasn’t being shy or bashful about it. It lessened her guilt the few times she caught Bucky’s eyes lingering on her form. Attention she happily returned with a flirty smile. It had been months since she’d had a one night stand. Not a lot of time and no one who’d held her attention. Bucky was definitely holding her attention and after the second hour and fifth captured glance she’d stopped her jogging to approach him across the gym.
“It’s been a while so if I’m reading this wrong totally ignore me and let’s pretend what I’m about to say never happened, but I’m gonna hit the showers. You can join if you want. No strings, no awkwardness after, your call.” A few minutes later she’d found herself pressed up against the lockers with her fingers fisted in Bucky’s dark chestnut hair, legs around his waist, his hands cupping her ass, while his cock drove into her over and over. Cries of pleasure tumbling and lost between them by way of those feverish opened mouth kisses.
Kiss # 2
They’ve got this friends with benefits thing down. They get along great outside the bedroom and even better within it. Things are good. Which is exactly why anxiety is gnawing away at Alison. She’s waiting for the crash. There’s alway a crash. Months have passed and as they tick by they’re spending time more closely together. She’s turned down a night on the town with friends when she knew he’d be returning from a mission. Knowing he’ll call her when the debrief is over. It’s only been the once but she knows she’d do it again. Not like she hasn’t pulled him away from a party or two before. Alison knows this is dangerous and yet she lets it continue. The crash is going to be so so bad.
Cuddling after sex was a recent development. As was having sex in her apartment. In her bed. Red flag after red flag but Alison couldn’t help herself. There was more privacy here. And no reason to pay for a hotel room when she had a perfectly good apartment she was already paying for. It was logical. Lies she told herself to ignore how her heart rate spiked before something heavy settled in her gut each time he pulled away to dress and leave. Every time she scooted into the warm space he left and pulled the blankets closer beneath her chin while nuzzling the pillow he’d rested upon. She watched him dress in silence. Heaviness growing more and more pronounced in her belly with each passing second. Multiple times Alison bit her tongue to keep from speaking. There was no reason to ruin the great thing they had going.
Tonight was similar to all other nights before. Her heart rate spiked and that dense dread knotted in her stomach as Bucky pulled away. Alison’s arms around his torso tightened minutely. “Stay.” The word was barely a whisper and she immediately regretted it. Her breath caught as Bucky stilled.
“Sure?”
Breath still captive in her lungs Ali responded by nodding her head against his shoulder. Bucky reached to pull the comforter up over their bodies and relaxed back into the bed without more comment. Blanket settled in place both of his arms wrapped back around her. He kissed the top of her head and all the crushing anxiety within her released on a sigh. Alison’s head lifted, face pressing against the crook of his neck as she brushed a soft kiss there. Within moments sleep settled on them both.
Kiss # 3
“I did not!” Alison exclaimed, voice high with bashful indignance as she playfully pushed Bucky’s left shoulder. She was tucked between his side and one end of the couch, legs draped over his lap while Steve flanked his other side and Wade perched on the armrest behind her. Scrapper was curled up in Steve’s lap, head resting between Alison’s feet. Sam and Betsy were across from them on the love seat. Ororo, Thor, Natasha  and Wanda were also gathered around while other friends milled about, attention uncaptured by Bucky’s story.
“I swear you did. Didn’t think you’d ever let my hand go.” They were sharing memories and Bucky was lying-or maybe not lying-about how Alison had held onto his hand longer than appropriate during their first handshake.
“Lies! I held on the proper amount of time.” After lightly pushing his shoulder moments earlier Ali’s arm was draped behind him again.  “Maybe you were so awestruck by me time just stood still.” Her fingers idly toyed with his hair as she stared him down, daring him to rebuttal even as giggles tumbled between her grinning lips.
“Nah. You were the one awestruck, doll.” Her breath hitched and butterflies took flight in her belly as Bucky flashed her the grin that rarely failed to short circuit her brain and get him his way. Ali rolled her eyes to cover up just how devastatingly effective that smile was.
“Whatever, Barnes.” The words were a concession and he knew it, making that heart stopping grin widen. Shaking her head Alison leaned in hoping to kiss the look off his stupidly handsome face. No luck. With another eye roll Alison swept her gaze over the rest of the group. “Ok, next person!”
Kiss # 4
Alison’s hands massaged the conditioner into Bucky’s dark chestnut mane. It was becoming impossibly long but she enjoyed playing with it. A small groan floated from Bucky’s lips and he began to relax further, leaning back until he’d pressed Alison flush against the marble wall. Even with the warmth of the shower the wall remained cool, causing Ali to yelp when her bare body contacted it.
“Hey!” A giggle peeled from her lips as soapy fingers moved to his back muscles, pushing on him halfheartedly. “Stand up right. You’re heavy.” He was leaning back with some pressure but not admittedly not slumping his full weight against her.
“Can’t. Sleepy.”
“Tough titty, Barnes. I’m not carrying you to bed.” No matter that she technically could. Far easier than she could Steve or Wade at any rate. Their taller frames making the maneuver more difficult.
Bucky released a childish groan, body remaining where it was. Alison let out another delighted laugh as her hands slid down to playfully smack his butt. “Come on. Let’s rinse the conditioner then you can sit while I blow dry your hair.” She loathed anyone climbing into bed wet. There were few exceptions. Slowly, he stood properly, turning to wrap his arms around Alison before stepping backward beneath the spray. Each movement was punctuated by a zombie-esque groan as his eyes remained closed. Alison was beside herself with laughter at his antics.
“Boo-hoo you. How hard it is to stand and let your girlfriend wash tame your hair. However do you survive?” Ali lifted her arms to begin washing the lather from his locks.
“Kisses help.” Both corners of his mouth lifted in a smug smile.
“You’re awful.” Still Alison found herself leaning up to press a kiss to his nose. “That’s all you get.”
Bucky’s arms tightened around her waist. “For now.”
“I thought you were sleepy.”
“Maybe I’ll catch my second wind.” One of his eyes peeked to catch Ali rolling her eyes which prompted his smile to bloom larger. “I love you.”
“Yeah yeah.” Alison muttered while checking that his hair was thoroughly rid of all conditioner. “Love you too.”
Kiss # 5
Schedules were tight but the weather was too perfect to let slip by unappreciated. With no pressing missions on the docket she’d planned a vaycay for the five of them this weekend. Scrapper busied herself chasing the waves. Yipping as they receded from the shore before racing forward to pounce into them as they sloshed back. Her black and white fur was caked with saltwater and sand but she was having a blast. Almost as fun as Ali was having annihilating this game of volleyball. She and Steve were paired against Wade and Bucky and had beasted the past three sets.
“You’re cheating!”
“Hah! You wish Barnes.” Ali scoffed, catching her breath after the latest point had been earned. “It’s called skills, baby.” She beamed at him from across the net, hands on her hips.
“Yeah. Cheating skills.” Bucky tossed back. The sun was beating down hard by now and they’d been going hard for close to ninety minutes. Even he was winded.
Steve scooped up the wayward volleyball, shaking his head at their bickering and calling out for Scrapper who immediately abandoned the water to race to his side. There was no telling how long they’d stand there squabbling so he was headed back to their cabana.
“Don’t be a spoilsport, Duckaroo. It’s not cute.”
“Ooooh. Sparkles is throwing out Duckaroo. It’s about to get wild folks.” Wade interjected, thoroughly enjoying the banter. Bucky tossed him a withering glare while Ali burst into laughter. The glare did nothing to damper Wade’s own mirth. “Don’t be such a sourpuss, Duckaroo.”  Wade stole a quick kiss from Buck before grabbing one from Alison who’d rounded the net mere moments before. “It was a good game, so you two make up. I’m going to catch up with Captain Hottie and see if I can reapply his sunscreen. Oh Captain, my Captain!”
Alison continued to giggle as Wade jogged to catch up with Steve then linked their fingers to walk hand in hand toward the cabana while whispering in his ear. She glanced up at Buck who’s dour expression had melted into a fond smile watching the scene unfold too. “See, that’s cute.”
“Yeah.”
“I meant that dopey grin on your face.” Alison looped her arms around his right arm as he protested.
“It’s not dopey.”
“From where I’m standing it was. Wish I’d had my phone.”
Bucky scoffed and began walking after their other two lovers, previous argument forgotten.
“Wait.” Ali stopped, keeping Bucky close as she reached out to turn his head toward her. Her lips brushed against his, feather light before pressing more firmly. Her fingers slid along his scruffy jaw into damp hair which she gently tugged encouraging him to tilt his head and deepen the kiss. Her tongue darted against his tongue, coaxing his lips open to slip inside his mouth. After teasing a deep moan from him Alison pulled back just enough to press her forehead against his. The hand not in his hair had moved from around his arm to rest against his hip. “Love you.”
“Love you too,” Bucky replied, that fond smile returning to his face.
“Even though we kicked your ass at volleyball fair and square?” Ali teased with a wicked grin.
Now it was Bucky’s turn to roll his eyes as he slung his right arm across Alison’s shoulders and began walking again. “You’re a punk.”
“Still love me.”
“Always.”
