Questions to ask during Disability Pride Month
Happy Disability Pride Month!
Is your workplace really a place where disabled folks can thrive?
Do you measure the worth of your employees via ableist metrics?
Are you a person-first or a production/resource-first organization?
Do you foster an environment that rehabilitates those suffering from burnout into success or do you give up on them and let them go?
If someone doesn't "look" disabled but tells you that they're disabled, what do you do? How do you react?
What accommodations do you ask for from your employer for your disability?
If a person loses an ability that affects their employment, is the onus of finding a solution fall upon the employee or the employer?
Is it fair that people have to seek out a diagnosis for X disability to receive accommodations, where seeking a diagnosis costs time, money, and, sometimes, humiliation from multiple healthcare providers who may or may not believe you?
Who gets to decide what is considered disabling?
Universal healthcare, maybe?
Is it fair to ask disabled people to file for disability claims, get lawyers, go through paperwork, "prove" their disability, etc. in their country of residence in order to survive when they cannot earn income?

ACCESS AND TIMES ARE HARD
You know in your own personal life that if you do not prioritize something it won't get done, and if you do it does.
It's the same with corporations, businesses, organizations, and institutions, including families.
If this church truly wanted to provide access, they would.
Whenever I post a cartoon addressing disability, sometimes able-people come on and try to get us to be reasonable. Some even say we should be focusing on the spiritual rather than the physical.
Meanwhile, my disabled friends all relate to the cartoons and actually claim the church is one of the most ableist institutions and Christians are the most ableist people on the planet.
For all kinds of reasons:
Jesus is coming back soon, so why bother? You should be healed, and your presence is an admission of failure. God is all powerful, so we don't embrace weakness. We need to prioritize our money to support the ministry and save the nations.
I don't disagree.

I wrote a poem titled “SICK”. I decided to post it here while it’s July (2023), Disability Pride Month.
Image description: A brown paper journal lays open on top of light blue bed sheets. The page holds a poem written with grey and maroon colored pencils. An orange knit beanie lingers in the top right of the photo, creating a soft arched shadow that hesitates right above the poem. The title of the poem “SICK” appears in big letters and has an added effect that could be described as creating a shadow or a 3-Dimensional effect. The drawing of the word “sick” is what led me into writing the poem, which reads:
SICK
see how it rises / the letters of the word duplicate / double / there’s more / abundance here / sunshine and shadows love and / grieve — being / more possibilities / sinking beyond space and time
End image description.

Saturday, July 15, 2023 ADHDers often feel like we 'should' be able to do something because ✨ we've done it before ✨ or that our difficulty with focus/productivity isn't a real disability b/c sometimes we can do it just fine.
GUYS. LADIES. GENTLETHEMS.
THAT IS THE DISABILITY.
The INCONSISTENCY. - Jessica McCabe, @howtoadhd

#disabilitypridemonth #disabilityawareness Posted @withregram • @theseatedview “We are more disabled by the society that we live in then by all bodies in our diagnoses.”⁣ ⁣ When I first heard those words by Stella Young in her revolutionary TED Talk #LinkInBio, it changed my life. I grew up with and in the medical model of disability, the one that views illness and disability as wrong, something to be fixed and if it can’t be fixed, a failure to be hidden. It's the origin of much of the stigma and the foundation for a society that sees health as the norm (rather than the privilege it i) and accessibility as a nice to have, rather than a right.⁣ ⁣ Switching my thinking to the social definition of disability changed everything and it might do the same for you. When you see disability as a result of the barriers in your environment, rather than an isolated personal issue, it blows up your worldview. And it shifts the responsibility for inclusion in a way that could truly change our culture. Instead of the disabled person being in charge for creating the accessibility and change they need every single day (trust me, it’s exhausting), placing that responsibility where it belongs — those in charge of the environment — is likely to create more access and faster, too.⁣ ⁣ I believe in being part of the solution, contributing my lived experience and professional expertise to ensure that any changes made will actually work for the disabled community. But understanding that I am not responsible for the entirety of the solution was, quite frankly, an incredible relief.⁣ ⁣ Your disability is defined by an inaccessible society. What could you do if your community was accessible?⁣ ⁣ [Accessibility description: a photo of oxidized bars on the banister by concrete stairs. Text: “my disability exists not because I use a wheelchair, but because the broader environment is accessible.” – Stella Young.] https://www.instagram.com/p/CgcqXV5pXOc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

(Ignore the mess) but first cane! #Disabilitypridemonth I guess. My fibromyalgia is either getting worse or my hyper-rapid #CYP2D6 is being rude. Either way, this folds up so I can carry it in my bag just in case. Bad brain fog day, but managed to go out to pick up this, my medicines, and M&M crunchy cookies bags. https://www.instagram.com/p/CfudPFflcZ3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

👩🏼‍🦽 #nonfictionfactionbuddyreads 👩🏼‍🦽 In case you missed it, @torriereadsalot and I started a second buddy read group (to go along with #getthrilledbuddyreads) called The Nonfiction Faction. Our very first month was July, and we chose SITTING PRETTY by Rebekah Taussig, aka @sitting_pretty here on Insta! It was the perfect read to celebrate #disabilitypridemonth. I wasn't able to finish the book before our discussion (welcome to life with chronic pain/illness), but I flagged so many passages in the parts I did get through that I have decided I need my own copy so I can mark it up! We had such a wonderful discussion in our group, and everyone absolutely loved this book. Remember, you shouldn't only pick up #disabilityreads during July! So grab this incredible memoir next time you're at the library or bookstore, and follow Rebekah here on insta. And a huge thanks to the awesome folks who participated in our discussion, I learned from you and really enjoyed discussing this book, and life with disabilities of all kinds, with all of you 💛 (Side note: The next 4 months leading up to the election we are doing a series on Current Affairs, and you can find details on my feed a few posts back. For August we are reading OUR TIME IS NOW by Stacey Abrams, so if you'd like to join us, comment below or DM me!) 👩🏼‍🦽.👩🏼‍🦽 👩🏼‍🦽 #sittingpretty #sittingprettybook #rebekahtaussig #wheelchairgirl #disability #disabilityawareness #disabilityrepresentation #nonfictionreads #nonfictionbuddyread #memoir #memoirs #disabilitymemoir #disabilitymemoirs #buddyreads #buddyread #BookKeepingBlog #bookstagrammers #bookstagram #bookstagramcommunity #bookstagrammer #booknerd #booknerds #librarybooks #librarybook #booktography #nonfictionfaction https://www.instagram.com/p/CgzvxW8gDVO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

As the month of July comes to an end, I would like to recognize Disability Pride Month which is celebrated throughout the month. Disability Pride initially started as a day of celebration in 1990 which was the same year The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed in the United States. Canada has yet to officially recognize the month, but that doesn’t stop advocates and supporters from speaking out and recognizing Canadians with disabilities. Over the next few weeks I will going deep into the topic of disability stigma in an interview over the next few weeks, stay tuned for more information. #tuesday Today is the 32nd anniversary of the #americanswithdisabilitiesact. Many of my loved ones (including my mom), colleagues and friends are living w disabilities. It is a gift to be in relationship w them. 🙏🏾 They have given me the awareness of my able body privilege and the persistent and ubiquitous injustices of and harm caused by moving thru spaces that are not inclusive, despite it being a federal law. 😤 Even some local cities and municipalities I’ve experienced aren’t in compliance with ADA regulation for sidewalks and crosswalks. 😡Accountability is sorely missing-even in the public realm. It’s one thing to have a fully accessible space or not, another to accommodate/assist a person w disabilities, but how can we create spaces that allow all of us to live with a sense of agency? That’s my wish and continued work. 💚🌿🙏🏾#tuesdaymotivation #transformationtuesday #disabilityjustice #disabilitypridemonth #disabilitypride #Repost @civilrightsorg ・・・ Know your rights! For the 32nd anniversary of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act, we partnered with @ndrnadvocates to share common scenarios you or a friend may find yourselves. The ADA has made this country more accessible... But not enough. More than three decades after passage of the ADA, there is so much work left to do to ensure that the ADA’s goal of full participation and inclusion is a reality for ALL people with disabilities. Never forget this: Disability rights are civil and human rights! #ADA32 (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cge_CcIpTRfudOzlTWvpRtdMroM3BtN9O89NuQ0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
