Meet Bernard Weiselberg, a champion watermelon-eater. In 1935, the 5-year-old had defeated all other contestants under age 10 in not just a watermelon-eating contest but a pie-eating contest, too.

A year later, the 6-year-old Brooklyn boy took the pie title once again in a spectacle The NY Times found difficult to ignore. "Champion Bernard Weiselberg … Smears Rivals and Self," read one headline. "His Technique Flawless," read another. And finally: "Midget Conqueror of Big Cherry Confection Poses for His Picture Between Bites." The young champion asked The Times to call him "Wallace Beery Jr."—a sign of reverence for his favorite actor. "This whim is usually gratified because his record commands respect," The Times noted.

ummer is coming soon and we want to share this lovely Watermelon Mint Iced Tea Recipe

Ingredients:

4 cups of water

2-3 tea bags of your choice (green tea or black tea work well)

2 cups fresh watermelon cubes

Fresh mint leaves

Ice cubes

1-2 tablespoons honey or sweetener of choice (optional)

Watermelon slices and mint sprigs, for garnish

Instructions:

Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Once boiling, remove from heat and add the tea bags. Allow to steep for 3-5 minutes, depending on how strong you like your tea.

While the tea is steeping, puree the watermelon cubes in a blender until smooth. Strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove any solids, collecting the juice in a bowl.

Remove the tea bags from the pot and add honey or your choice of sweetener while the tea is still warm, stirring until dissolved.

Let the tea cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled.

To serve, fill glasses with ice cubes and pour in the chilled tea, leaving some room at the top for the watermelon juice.

Add a splash of watermelon juice to each glass and stir gently to combine.

Garnish with fresh mint leaves, a sprig of mint, and a slice of watermelon on the rim of the glass.

Serve immediately and enjoy your cool, refreshing Watermelon Mint Iced Tea!

The problem with it being practically summer weather is that i have the urge to consume my weight in either fresh fruit or pasta salad while knowing that doing either of those is not advised.

Also, i don’t have any fresh fruit other than apples and mandarin oranges but those aren’t the right fresh fruits.

Plus it’s going to drop right back down into normal April temperatures in a couple days anyway

Shoutout to people who are up at 1:50AM on a late summer Wednesday because they started trying to cut a watermelon at 10:00PM and got in way over their head, taking 30 minutes to figure out it goes much faster if you thwack the watermelon with the knife machete-style first to get it buried in there. Shoutout to people who just ate an ungodly amount of that same watermelon because their friend bought a giant one and it is now a race against the clock to devour it while it’s fresh. Shout out to people who have at once delighted and horrified the aforementioned friend with their hidden talent for hacking down an entire slice of watermelon in a second (the secret is not to chew, watermelons are basically just red fleshy water so whatever you manage to shove into your mouth will collapse into a very manageable diffuse pulp with barely any effort on your part, allowing you to mow down the entire thing). Shoutout to people who definitely love watermelon with their entire hearts, but after tonight would be content not to encounter watermelon for a year at least. I see you, and you’re valid.
