"Food's ready, Chick!" Her father's booming voice could be heard from all around the castle, bouncing off the walls. It was strange. Usually he didn't summon her for food. Often, it'd be Reginald or Crimson who'd come and let her know about what meal the cooks had made. She leapt off her bouncy bed and scampered along the stone-patterned floors.

The young torchic - whose stomach was growling louder than an angry stoutland - hurried to the dining area and sat at the rather long (and what she thought to be incredibly pointless) table that stood in the centre. The walls had candles that hung on them, lighting up the room nicely. The table had two dishes on it, each decorated with a tiny fire-like pattern on them. These weren't the fancy dishes that were sometimes used for dinners which meant that this meal was something more casual. She hadn't had one of those since-

The large, oak door burst open, slamming against the wall it was hinged to - any stronger and the door probably would have flown off of the golden hinges. Standing there was a rather large excadrill, holding a plate which had been covered by a metal dish. Ah, her dad. "Glad I called you in time, Chickadee. How've you been?"

Hope so desperately wanted to say that she was tired, stressed and still incredibly sad. However, she couldn't really answer his question honestly. She didn't want to make him feel bad. He already had enough going on as it is without having to worry about her. "Oh, yeah I'm good. What I want to know is what you were doing in the kitchen, old man, and why you were the one who called me down."

The excadrill laughed a hearty laugh and ruffled her head feathers. "Can't your old man have a bit of fun in the kitchen? I cooked you up something special. Gonna be honest with you, Chick, I tried following the recipe but it just seemed pointless. So I decided to go with the flow and made something I'm sure you'll love."

King Flint presented Hope with the plate and covering combo. Removing the lid quickly, Hope could see that there was a small bowl on the plate, steam rising from it. As soon as the scent wafted over, Hope could feel her eyes begin to water. Whatever that smell was, it wasn't a pleasant one. She could feel her stomach want to empty. Looking at the soup, she could see a wide assortment of foods, ranging from beans to berries to vegetables, inside of the bowl. She even thought she saw a rare candy bubble up to the surface. Somehow, the sickly green of the soup didn't make her father think that what he had made may not be edible. Hope noticed, from where her father had come from, Reginald stood at the doorway, shaking his head in warning. She turned to her clearly proud father and asked, "Dad, what have you made?"

The King, quite oblivious to how his daughter was feeling, decided to use his most confident voice to describe this dish. "This right here is what I like to call surprise soup. I found a bunch of random ingredients, put them in, boiled some water for a couple of minutes and hey presto, you've got some soup. Now, if you like it, I may tell you about the extra spice I added to it. But only when you're older, alright Chick?"

He ladled some of the runny liquid into the dish in front of her and waited for her to take a spoonful of the mystery soup. Hope couldn't tell her father she didn't want it. He'd become disheartened by it but it just looked so vile. She looked down at it and could feel herself wretching. Grabbing the spoon with her foot, she put as little of the soup as she could on it and forced it into her mouth.

The next thing she knew, she had emptied the contents of her stomach into the sink close by.

"Never again," she thought, "Dad completely sucks at cooking."
