Modern day Luffy would be an entomologist. He told his school counselor he wanted to look at bugs for a living and they signed him up for all the science classes. Somehow he’s made his way to being one of the top entomologists in the world

I saw an isopod today
There were two, actually.
Small bodies bathed in yellow, iridescent plates
Shining like gold and sunlight and honey
Shining like love
Their small antennas are so delicate, so caring and thorough in their work
Legs moving with such precision
Imagine the brainpower it must take to move so many legs at the same time
The mindfulness it must take just to keep moving
There's something undeniably intelligent in that, something breathtaking
I feel like I have something to learn from these animals, these small, complicated bodies that are so determined to live
That they don't mind the effort
It scares me too, to watch them
Knowing how fragile they are.
Knowing how badly they want to live and how they too, lack any control
Everything could be over so quick
Do they know the danger they're in?
I went camping a few months ago, a nice cabin up by a lake with a bonfire out back
I carefully turned over the stones that made up the fire's resting place
Scared I would find life, scared of what lighting that bonfire would hurt
When my dad said he wanted to use it that night, I went out to the yard and got working
Checking each piece of wood, searching under every last sacred rock
On my knees like a prayer, dutifully sifting through these tiny cities of stone
Under every one, I found isopods
Surrounding that fire bed, the soon to be red hot stones teeming with livelihoods
I dug through and collected them, and moved them somewhere different
Safer
I'm probably a monster to them
I needed to help them. I needed to get them away from the fire, but it's not like I could explain
I uprooted them from their homes and carried them somewhere unfamiliar
I ruined any semblance of normality they might've had
Uprooting or burning? Which ones worse?
Is it still saving if it still hurt? They'll never know about the fire, they'll never know what would've happened if they'd stayed to become kindling
In their eyes I caused nothing but harm
I watched the fire like penance that night
It was hard to feel the warmth through the burning, searing heat
I can't know if I got them all out
I can't know if that campfire was some kind of murder
I don't know how to stop grieving for what might've been
I don't know why no one else is seized with that same, thrashing panic that fills me so completely over things like this
What is an acceptable murder?
People don't think twice about killing some things, don't think about what their joy might cost
Inescapable fear, mass extinction of young, writhing life
How do you grieve that?
Knowing its happening every day? Knowing no one else cares like you do?
I hope I didn't miss any
I know I must have, I just have to swallow it and try to help the next one in line
I wish it stopped
I wish I didn't have to hold so much grief in my dirty hands
But it lives with me, under the rocks of a campfire where I've spent years being branded by small, avoidable deaths on a scale so large I can't fathom it
I'm still trying to help the isopods escape, but it's not just my stake to burn on
No, it's a mass grave
I can't save everyone from burning with me
I can't handle this massacre much longer

Are there any pets that you like playing with that you wouldn’t want to own?
And to be clear, I don’t mean human pets! 😂
I was confused a minute haha
I'm pretty good with cats & dogs. I had a long list of strange pets as a kid (including a prairie dog and a Madagascar hissing cockroach) so I'm keeping it real with just the cat for now. 😂
send me asks like we're at a slumber party? 💅💄

today is a sad day. i've made a few posts about the Charaxes jasius caterpillars near me, since they're one of my favorites and their lifecycle allows me to see bugs during a season that would otherwise be lacking in them. after a few days of bad weather, i returned to the woods to find out almost all of their host plants had been cut down. where there were about a dozen caterpillars last week, only three remain. they were all weeks away from pupating. Arbutus unedo is a slow grower, and the bushes will not grow back in time for next autumn. these butterflies are not endangered, and will probably find another place to lay their eggs, but i don't know if i'll see them again for a while.
Tumblr media
as with most countries in the world and especially in western europe, portugal is teeming with invasive plants. my woods have multiple species of eucalyptus, wattles, wood sorrels, and others. they hinder the growth of native plants and are often culled by the government. unfortunately, this is done more for show than anything else and due to lack of concern, knowledge, or whatever else, the few native plants that remain are also mowed down in the process. this often means fewer and fewer native plants each year as they're not given the time to grow and spread, while invasives will easily grow back within a few months.
Tumblr media
as i've said, these are not threatened, and in the grand scheme of things i keep telling myself i'm overreacting, but i was very attached to these little things and looking forward to watching them pupate and emerge. i wish the point of this post was simply a doomer message about never getting invested in anything but i don't want to do that. i guess if there's any reason why i'm posting this other than as an excuse to show these guys off one last time it's because i just want to remind people to pay attention to what's around them and cherish it while they have the chance.

I don’t think anyone has done this, so I went ahead and did research and made these guys myself! I could’ve gone the easy route and did a monarch butterfly and a luna moth, but I wanted this to be a bit more interesting. So here’s my take on Butterfly Sun and Moth Moon! (Click for better quality)

I love being the bug person in my family :) my sister just called me over to get a moth off of her door so it wouldn't fly into her house, but I thought she was talking about a giant wolf spider tha was just chillin by the hinges. petition to make the next Dune movie a documentary about Copeblepharon fuscum
All scenes involving the Shai-Hulud get replaced with a bunch of clips of noctuid larvae wriggling through the sand
It's an endangered species too, this would be so good for awareness!

Honest question from someone who also dislikes "invasive species control that amounts to kill on sight": what do you suggest as an alternative control effort should I encounter say a spotted lanternfly or a spongy moth? I really hate just killing bugs for being in the wrong place. Thanks!
i honestly don't think there is much that any individual person can do. like in general once an exotic species has established in an area there's almost nothing short of a fast and concerted multimillion dollar years-long eradication program that even stands a chance of actually removing them entirely. and this is a rant for another day but generally nobody wants to pay for the kind of program that stands an actual chance of being successful. it doesn't matter how many concerned citizens you convince to go around smashing animals, if even a handful get missed, and many many more than a handful will get missed, the survivors can lay enough eggs and rapidly enough that the population will have no trouble rebounding. the way to eradicate an invasive species, when it's even possible, is through very strategic and large-scale application of pesticides, environmental control, parasitoids, and other integrated pest management strategies.
and that's not even mentioning that the whole smash-on-sight thing requires people to recognize the target and not just smash every bug they see which is also another rant for another day because you would not fucking believe how bad people are at identifying insects like i've had fucking crane flies reported as "murder hornets" (another rant). i genuinely believe that entomology should be a core primary and secondary education subject alongside history and math. the world is mostly bugs and it's important to know at least a little about them. without mass knowledge, the whole campaign just engenders a further generalized fear and disgust and violence towards all insects which is fucking nasty to me.
anyway i'm getting distracted. back to your question, what should you do if you encounter a spotted lanternfly or spongy moth or japanese beetle or whatever? report it to your state's department of agriculture if you live in the united states, or to whatever the equivalent is if you live elsewhere. chances are they're already aware of the infestation in your area but there's always the chance that they're not. with any luck they're one of the few ones that actually has the funding to operate a large-scale control program and are working on it already. again i'm very fatalistic about these things and don't think that eradication is possible in most cases by the time the exotic insect is discovered but at the very least it is often possible to keep the populations in check to the point that they're not an ecological/economic catastrophe using the IPM methods mentioned above--with enough funding. you can kill the bug if you want but smashing one bug or a dozen or a hundred or a thousand isn't going to do shit in the long run or the large scale and it's not the bug's fault that it is where it is.

WASPS OF THE WORLD - A REVIEW
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A photo of the cover of the book 'Wasps Of The World: A Guide To Every Family' by Simon Van Noort and Gavin Broad, a black and white cover with 12 in color photos of wasps of a multitude of different families /End ID.]
Howdy everyone! and happy Wasp Wednesday!
Yesterday, I finished reading through this book, and figured I'd share my thoughts and reasons to recommend it, given how recently published it is as of writing! (February 6th, 2024)
Read under the cut!
So, How Extensive Is It?:
The cover doesn't lie, for the most part, covering every family that one might traditionally consider to be wasps as of the publishing date, and more! Despite being simply titled 'Wasps Of The World', you may be surprised to learn that this book essentially covers all of Hymenoptera, to an extent.
The taxonomically minded of you might expect ants and bees to get at least a passing mention, also being wasps themselves, although their sections are less extensive than other well known families, and the bee families are not covered individually (I cannot yet speak for the quality of these books but this book recommends the publications 'Ants, A Visual Guide' by Heather Campbell and Benjamin Blanchard, and 'Bees Of The World' by Laurence Packer for more extensive reading).
What you might not expect however, is the section on suborder Symphyta, which is to say, sawflies! Each family of this suborder is covered in pages 30 - 59, just as extensively as those in Apocrita (Covered in pages 60 - 233). I must say this was a pleasant surprise!
How Is It Covered? (Extensiveness Continued):
The length of each segment tends to depend on how much is actually known about each family and how unique each species or subfamily is from each other within, and may range from a short paragraph to up to 4 pages. Images, with descriptions, are provided for each family, sometimes just one but usually two or more, as well as a section covering; Distribution (with geographic map), Genera, Habitats, Size, Activity, Reproduction, and Diet
Of course, with the species richness of an order like Hymenoptera, not everything about each family can be covered in a 200+ page book, but this book provides an absolutely fantastic framework of knowledge from nesting and parasitizing behavior, to their vast ecological benefits (or pest statuses in the few cases where applicable), as well as a glossary of some of the more technical terms used (Page 234) and suggested further reading (Page 235)
The book also contains a wonderful introductory section (Pages 6 - 29) covering generally common behaviors, anatomy, diversity, biology, conservation, classification, and even how wasps are photographed! (bonus points for the mention of iNaturalist)
Would I Recommend It?/How Good Is It For Someone Like Me (The Reader)?:
The short answer is Absolutely/Great!
The longer answer is yes, I would recommend it, as already mentioned, it provides an extensive amount of knowledge for those just getting interested in Hymenoptera or entomology in general, and provides plenty in the way of extra information that even someone who's been invested in the study for quite a while may not yet know, including more recent developments in each family's classification.
As the title might suggest, the book may also see some use as a field guide, or as an aid to teach others about wasps!
The book is also relatively cheap comparatively to some textbooks, available for $25 - $30 for an outright purchase
In Conclusion:
This is a wonderful book and I'm very happy with my purchase! It feels weird giving a star rating to non-fiction publications but if I had to give one, it would be
5/5

𔓕   ..     ┊    Kokushibo !
Kokushibo off all people doesn't care about your hobbies or your job. You like pinning poor little insects to wood and study them ? You got it. He's a busy man and had killed hundreds if not thousands people , he has seen wilder shit in his life span and your sadistic little hobby is NOT it.
He thinks it's silly. You can be considered a doctor.. yet you decide to spend your time on... insects. How stupid.
Since he travels all around japan he tends to see many insects , if it's summer, early fall or late spring , he sometimes might bring them to you , but ut's once in a blue moon. He doesn't want the dirty insect out of NOWHERE anywhere near his or your skin. Plus it might be dangerous , he doesn't want you to get hurt.
You're really passionate about it , so you tell him about it every single day , in different amounts. He looks unamused at the very least, but can repeat everything you said with every pause and nod that you made.
Despite thinking it's useless he'd still cherish your little hobby. It's a part of you after all.
𔓕   ..     ┊    Douma !
Douma om the other hand is more fascinated by your hobby ! ( probbaly because he knew some things about entomology )
Come on , this man had hundreds of cultists under his name , they had numerous hobbies ! Im sure he knows alot.
Tries to stay by your side while you work , or lets you use his room to work in. ( gets whiney when you wanna work alone )
He's INVESTED , he actually tried to copy your working patterns and ut's becoming like you two are siblings. You don't mind though because you think your work rate is pretty sudficient .. though getting bit by bugs isn't really pleasent.

More Than Curiosity🌙
previous ShadowAU~ it's all smut from here on tbh, very dubcon-y so mind the tagss💕
cw// terato, entomology/insect killing/mounting mentions, groping
"I know you're there..." Liquid darkness slithers across the floor at his words, indignant... almost relieved. Ichigo isn't entirely sure this isn't another attempt at a nightmare, he's had enough life-like enough dreams to doubt, and yet he wouldn't be surprised if he was, really, fully awake. He has enough proof and experience to know there's something not of this world under his bed. Something he learned not to tell psychiatrists about, if he wants to keep his broken sanity intact. It better be real, his mind provides, when a near three meter high creature takes shape from the pool of shadows at the foot of his bed. Its velvety, fluid, state, taking a more solid, skin-like, look to it the further it incorporates into reality. The thing growls in his face, a guttural, echoing sound reverberating all along its body before it rings through his bones. Ichigo realizes, with a crooked grin, that he feels a similar facination about it as he does when he watches his invertebrate specimens die inside a jar. It twists and moves somewhat unnaturally, a dying carcass returning to a lively shape... It attempts to speak- and all Ichigo can think about is the crude way his dick jolts awake when it opens its mouth full of shadowy teeth. Shadows dripping off its face in inky droplets, only to mix into the darkness of the room like it was water. He wants to take in as much as he can, lest he be dreaming for real; with wide, burning, tired, eyes, he examines every inch of him. He can't remember the last time he ever felt real arousal for anyone, or anything. Girls with issues such as his would often try to throw themselves at him, the creepy aura off him called in those who had fathers they wanted to disappoint in this particular way, he supposed; but, real or fake interest, it was never enough to get him quite like this. Fat and heavy against the soft worn fabric of his underwear; so hard he could faint, and so eager to touch that his fingertips tingled, electrified. If it could speak, Ichigo cut those guttural words short with his curious hands; reaching over to feel the silky black hair and the darkened skin, breathing in deeper when the single touch reverted the things face back to a plain face plate with a pair of confused blue eyes. Hah, so it's not really one to be touched, he supposes. Whatever it is, it's used to hiding so well no one ever knows it's there at all... Dark pride swells in his core just thinking about being the only one, or one of few, to see such an exquisite creature, to touch it's surprisingly soft hair and warm skin... to breath in its ashy scent, and gaze down it's glowing pale eyes. His heart beats so fast he's not sure he won't lose consciousness for real, his breathing fast and ragged as his fingers became a grabby fist and a flat palm; hungrily tracing all it's soot black skin like he owned it. Pulling it's body in close to better look into its eyes press himself to the warmth of its shadowy bits still without shape. "Whatever the fuck you are..." he mutters, losely hoping it will understand, "I'm gonna fuck the hell out of you."

emurui arc ender (shocked face)
do you have everything about all of their parents? i for some reason can’t find anything about ichika’s mom, rui’s dad or emu’s mother (i may be blind, pretty sure emu’s mother was mentioned and ichika’s mom was aswell. i know she was mentioned in ichika’s introduction but i haven’t seen her in story yet)
The parents who don’t have physical appearances are generally less important and rarely show up or are mentioned (with a few exceptions) but we do learn some things about them from card stories and such. Here’s some stuff I can remember about the faceless/nameless parents
Ichika’s parents met because they liked the same song. It’s where her name comes from.
also her dad reads manga
We don’t know much about her mother. she's nice though.
Saki and Tsukasa’s mother is a piano teacher. Considering that she’s friends with Harumichi, she probably used to play professionally
We don’t know much about their father, but he has a tendency to spoil Saki (mentioned in Tenma Hinamatsuri)
Honami’s mother is a beautician (mentioned in an area conversation iirc) and her father is a hairstylist (mentioned in Petit SEKAI Episode 6)
Shiho and Shizuku’s mother is a koto instructor and their father used to be a guitarist in a band
We don’t know much about Minori’s parents but they show up in STEP by STEP!. They initially had concerns about her switching courses and being a full-time idol, but after seeing that Minori was prepared and determined to be an idol they let her go ahead
We don't know a huge amount about Haruka and Airi's parents either. Similar to Minori, we know they are nice parents and supportive of their idol careers and that's about it.
Haruka's mother is a nail artist. She was worried about Haruka when she was younger because she rarely smiled.
Kohane's dad is a photographer. He's also the one who bought Count Pearl.
According to Kohane, he has a penchant for coming up with weird names
An mentions in MEIKO's 1* card story that her mother, Yuka, is not a good cook.
I think it's stated somewhere that Yuka is a teacher but don't quote me on that
Akito and Ena's mother makes them eat their carrots because she thinks they should at least try to eat the things they don't like.
She's pretty laid-back and thinks her kids should be able to do whatever they want to do. She's meant to be the polar opposite of Mrs Asahina.
In Ena's fes card it's revealed that she kept some of the old art that Ena threw away in case she ever regretted it
Toya's mother used to bake him cookies a lot and that's why he likes them
She was also very overprotective of him when he was younger and basically wouldn't let him do any recreational games or activities in case he injured himself and couldn't play piano.
She taught Toya to play the violin. I'm assuming that she used to play professionally and that's how she met Harumichi.
We don't really know anything about Emu's mother iirc. She's mentioned occasionally but I don't remember her ever appearing off the top of my head. In Smile of Dreamer it's mentioned that she's abroad doing volunteer work in Cambodia.
Nene and Rui's mothers are good friends due to being neighbours. Nene even used to call Rui's mother "auntie" when they were younger. Her mother recorded a lot of her performances from when she was little.
Beyond that we don't really know anything. I don't remember Nene's dad ever appearing but he is mentioned.
Rui's mother is a biologist, as mentioned in Revival my dream. I have a theory that she mainly works in entomology (study of bugs), or maybe more specifically lepidopterology (study of moths and butterflies), because Rui talks a lot about a moth at one point and has books on butterflies in that event. He talks about some other bugs as well.
His dad is a robotics engineer, also mentioned in Revival my dream. He doesn't actually appear though.
Rui's mother had a very similar background to Rui. She was often called weird and eccentric because of her interest in biology and didn't have any friends until meeting Rui's father, who was really into robotics.
We don't know a huge amount about Mafuyu's father. He does push her to achieve as much as her mother does, but he seems to have limits.
We don't know a lot about Mizuki's parents either, but they are very supportive of them and were worried when they started skipping school
