Summary: Written for AI-less Whumptober 2023 Day 29. Set in a Modern-ish AU. After a storm, Eret spends his time finding the merman who saved him from drowning.

Author’s Notes: I originally had a different idea for this one, one that was way more intense and was actually Hiccstrid instead of Eretcup. But this is the fourth year in a row that my (AI-less) Whumptober time did not go as planned because of things entirely out of my control. This month is cursed. :)

So I had to keep that (relatively long) idea for a different day and come up with a shorter idea.

And thus this AU was born!

I honestly only got to write it because I FINALLY got the time to.

Today, just like many days, Eret finds himself staring at the sea. Leaning on the edge of his fishing boat, he stares down into the water. He should be paying attention, he should be casting his nets for today's catch, but instead he's wasting his time staring into the abyss.

About a month ago to the day, Eret's boat got caught in a terrible storm. He knew it was coming, but he still went out anyway, figuring he would be back in time. So instead of the catch of the day, he landed himself in trouble. The waves were wild and merciless, throwing his boat around until it capsized and he found himself in the dark depths he’s now staring into.

It was impossible to tread water, he couldn’t even reach the surface. Legs kicking, arms swinging, lungs burning. He found himself in the exact kind of position no one swimming in a large body of water wants to be in. Desperately reaching for the surface and yet not gaining an inch towards air.

Needless to say, Eret thought he was going to die.

Until…

A shape.

It was almost impossible to see in water so dark, but he could vaguely see it moving. He could’ve sworn it was shaped like a man, yet swam as fluid as a fish.

The last thing Eret remembered were the hands that grabbed him and the eyes that they belonged to. They were distinctly human and yet the pupils said something different. They were too large and they were that way to soak up what little light there was.

The next thing Eret remembers is when two paramedics loaded him into an ambulance to be taken to the local hospital. Obviously he made it or he wouldn’t be here today. But it’s the story behind his survival that adds another layer of weirdness.

Eret was found on a beach. There was a lot of junk left on that beach after the storm, Eret didn’t stand out even a little bit, yet he was found with ease.

Because apparently, someone approached a passerby, led her straight to him and that’s how the paramedics were called.

And now, a month later, Eret still searches for him. The one who saved his life, the owner of the hands that pulled him from the depths and those strange eyes.

Minutes pass by as Eret stares down into the dark water, minutes of seeing nothing below. Whatever or whoever he saw that day, they haven’t been seen since.

He sighs and straightens. Eyes closing, he conjures up the mental image he has of his savior. He can’t help it, they’ve been on his mind for the past month now.

According to the descriptions given to him when he asked around , he was a guy. A tall guy, a lean guy. With a head of auburn hair and striking green eyes. All of that and that he wasn’t wearing too much. A jacket, Eret’s, and that’s it. It was as if he'd “stepped right out of the ocean” as he was told. But there is one part that always seemed to stand out to people; how striking those eyes are.

It’s strange. While Eret’s muddled memory doesn’t allow him to remember every second of his rescue, he doesn’t remember seeing any green.

He just remember his pupils, his hands, and that odd fish-like movement.

He’s been left with questions and a lot of them. He tried to find him on land, he wanted to thank him. While he has no idea what he would be doing swimming in the ocean in the middle of a storm, Eret is grateful.

But it didn’t matter who he asked, he couldn’t find a sign of him. Not on the mainland and not online, a place he doesn’t traverse much anyway.

Or maybe he hadn’t tried hard enough, because there was a part of him that kept telling him that he was just not looking in the right place.

So every day following his last search, Eret took to the sea with his boat- it’s a rental until he can afford a new secondhand one- to catch fish to sell and instead he spends his time staring down into the water. Not for fish, but for something more mystical.

A mermaid. Or merman, he supposes.

The thought almost sounds too crazy, but dragons are real, so why not merfolk? Those who come from a sailor lineage like him know they were real once.

Eret walks over to the wheel and grabs it, planning on moving on. For days on end, he’s been posted in the general area he almost drowned in, hoping to get a glimpse of the one who saved him.

He’s not ready to give up. Whether the easy way or the hard way, Eret will find him somehow.

In a weird way, though he’s the fisherman, he’s also the one who’s been hooked.

My DreamSMP Head Canons:

c!Foolish

Species: Shark Totem Demigod

- c!Foolish is immortal, meaning he cant die of old age, but a critical injury can kill him (the amount of his canon lives is unknown)

Being a god he can shapeshift into multiple forms

1) Sky/Life & Death God, a humanoid Totem of Undying, resembling a golden statue with colorful scarab wings, in this form he can control Life & the skies/ weather. The Totem of Death is basically the same as the 1st, but with faded colors, and red instead of green markings, he controls Death

2) Ocean God, a human or golden shark/ (merman) esque monster. He has gills & lungs so he can breathe under & over water. He controls the ocean/tides, is more feral and shark like and automatically shifts into this form when fully emerged in water

3) Human, 6'1f, looks like ccFoolish, but wears egyptian style clothing around the Summer Home.

- He owns a Snowchester uniform and a couple of fancy clothes for special events

- He never uses this form because he feels vulnerable by his limited human abilities, only c!Eret has ever seen it

4) God Form, a humanoid golden Totem with scarab wings and a shark hood, gills, claws and shark teeth, controls all attributes of the weather, tides, Life & Death

- c!Foolish heals in the light of his beacon in his pyramid or in water (2nd one takes a lot longer tho)

- his Totem body is made of solid gold, including organs etc, and he bleeds liquid Emerald

- since c!Foolish's body is solid gold, he doesnt get affected by temperatures unless its extreme heat like lava and can not be hurt by regular hand to hand combat, but is vulnerable to materials harder/ more dense than gold, like Diamond or Netherite Weapons

- scars on his golden skin look like kinstugi, a "Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum"

- He hides the scars from the Red Banquet at all costs, under golden armor & accessoires to not be reminded of death /feel vulnerable

- I imagine c!Foolish to be a younger god, somewhere around 900 years

- being a Totem, c!Foolish can feel if a soul dies and gets resurrected. The first feels like a bad feeling washing over you, the resurrection causes him physical pain since its unnatural

- c!Foolish can revive people at will, but it takes one of his own lives in return

- when reviving people and when he dies the sound of a Totem popping can be heard

- because his death & respawn, works different from mortals, his actual body never disappears like it normaly would, so critical injuries will leaves scars

- when c!Antfrost killed c!Foolish at the Banquet it took him 2 attacks to kill him fully. The first strike was a sword through his back & chest, but that didnt kill him immediately, so c!Ant went for the neck decapitating him

- the only time when c!Foolish respawned, was at the Red Banquet when the Egg surpressed his powers, his body turned to gold dust and he respawned in his pyramid. This is why c!Foolish was in denial after his death, he had never died like a normal mortal before / wasnt aware he even could die like that

- c!Foolish's personality as a young god was wild, carefree, arrogant, angry, blood thirsty and had no appreciation for life

- after becoming a Totem of Life, he  avoided violence, treated living beings with care, is very protective, loyal, patient, cheerful & friendly to you if you treat him well.

- c!Foolish may seem like a gentle giant, but he is no pushover & not naive, considering his long life experience. He can stand his ground, uses his abilities when needed to intimidate and is observing and cunning.

- After the Red Banquet he became a lot more reserved again, stressed, anxious and paranoid with the fear of dying, desiring his immortality back which is why he made the deal with DreamXD

- c!Foolish is aware of Lady Death and is a lower god under her & DreamXD

- the only person c!Foolish considers to be his close friend is c!Eret, but he gets along with most people he interacts with. Other people he has some sort of attachment to are c!Puffy, c!Ponk, c!Sam, c!Ranboo, c!Michael, c!Tubbo and c!Aimsey

- c!Foolish can give life to objects like Totems, which is how he "got" his children, c!Puffy brought him a normal Totem of Undying and c!Foolish gave life to it

- doing so, Totems start morphing from a regular Totem/Object to a living being, limbs & abilities growing over time (like a tadpole)

- Depending on what kind of nature the Totem God is, they have different attributes & animal body parts. Foolish Jr. has wings since he is a Sky Totem, and Finley has shark fins since she is an Ocean Totem

Plus some old concept art I made of my c!Foolish design, its a bit outdated, but I still like it a lot

Bad's a demon with an entity attached to him

Skeppy's a cursed human fused with diamonds

Dream's a mix of two things; one's a zombie and the other is unknown

Sapnap's controls fire, no one really knows if he's a cursed human or he's a different species

George is predicted to be human, spoiler alert, he's not :) he's a glitch

Phil is, well, winged

Techno was cursed (pig ears and a pigtail) and has a shitton of stamina and strength, as does Dream

Wilbur is a ghost, though there isn't anything indicating how he died other than heavy eye bags and a runny nose

Fundy is a kitsune cause I'm basic

Eret can use mind control and his eyes glow white, no one knows what he is

Tommy, Tubbo, and Niki walk far from the village they live in, Niki only came along to watch them because they get into a lot of trouble by themselves. They find an abandoned house on a hill, and since there was no one around, that meant no authorities were around, meaning they could explore the abandoned building.

Turns out it wasn't abandoned, and it housed a bunch of monsters :)

Not to detract from Q's lore, I'll have to catch up on it all later, but whenever you want it I've got a bit of Eret angst for F*ed up Peter Pan!

Eret is pretty much the history keeper for all the Lost Boys. Whenever a new kid comes to Neverland, he quietly takes them aside when he gets the chance - not that he's hiding it from Dream, necessarily, he just doesn't want to take the chance that maybe Dream wouldn't want him doing this, so he tries to do it where Dream and George can't see - and he asks as much about their life as they're willing to tell him. Names of family members, their birthday, any pets, any happy memories they have from home. And he keeps it all in a little notebook. Every single Lost Kid has a page.

Except Eret.

Eret only got the idea to start keeping track of people's stories when they woke up one day and realized they remembered... pretty much nothing from their life before coming to Neverland. And they had a little bit of a crisis about it, and when they went to go ask older Lost Boys for help, they were all like, "Yeah, that happens. Don't worry about it."

"Well now I'm gonna worry about it even harder," thought Eret.

So basically they did a bit of snooping and found out that, the longer you've been in Neverland, the less you remember from before you came. And Dream didn't seem particularly opposed to it; when Eret asked, he just said, "If it was really so important, you wouldn't have forgotten."

Hence Eret starts her little collection of history, gathering as much information as she can about folks when they arrive, before they can forget it. And then this leads to a bunch of cute and kinda sad interactions, where Lost Kids will just roll up to her and be like, "Eret! Hey Eret!! How old am I again?" "Eret, when's my birthday?" "Can you tell me about my little brother again, Eret?" And Eret's always glad to help, but it makes her sad that it's something that even needs doing. And that there's no one who can do it for her.

(But as a bit of healing fluff, there is someone who can tell Eret about her history! Pretty soon after she got to Neverland, she missed her family and Dream got annoyed at her asking to go home, so she ended up running off to the beach to have a good cry. And then a merman around her age came up out of the water and asked what was wrong! And she told him all about her family that she missed, how she didn't know if she was ever gonna go home, how she was scared she made a huge mistake coming to Neverland. And the merman mostly just listened, because he didn't have any way to help her get home, either. But his presence helped. After a few hours of the two just talking and becoming fast friends, another Lost Kid showed up to retrieve Eret, saying Dream got worried and wanted her back. So Eret waved goodbye to her new friend, and the two parted ways.

Years later, Eret's forgotten all about the interaction. But Foolish never forgot his first friend and all that she'd lost; it's part of why Foolish decided very early on not to trust Dream. So when they meet up again, Foolish is delighted to have his friend back, and he can eventually tell Eret everything she told him!)

(And a tiny tidbit of Fundy angst too for a friend who thought of it, Fundy spends like fifteen minutes straight talking about 5up when Eret asks if he has any friends from school. Then, three weeks later, Eret brings up the story Fundy told him about how he and 5up met on the first day of school, and Fundy asks, "Who's 5up?")

Oh god. This hurts. This hurts a lot. I'm going to go and think about this a lot.

Just everyone slowly forgetting from before Neverland and their life before hurts. Oh god.

And Fundy forgetting 5up hurts. Oh god that hurts so much.

Well, if you mean if one of them were the mermaid. I have two verisons.

Snotlout: Like Ariel. He likes to collect shiney things that fall off boats or wash onto beachers or whatever people left there, he loves to show Eret his things. But, he doesn’t like it when he touches it.

Eret: Eret really likes collecting sea shells and other ocean things. Rocks included! Showing them to Snotlout is like showing treasure to a pirate. Snotlout loves the things he shows and asks if he could keep some and Eret agrees.
