Love how in Skyrim and now Fallout 4 i've set up businesses that I will inevitibly forget about before coming back many hours of playtime later to find that i've amassed a large amount of money

Is there any general consensus on whether horses are considered extinct or not in the Fallout universe? Looking into it, I saw that Avellone made a statement on the implications horses would have on the wasteland's technology - I feel like if they did exist they'd be mentioned more often, but there's also the issue that gameplay-wise they'd be hard to implement (we've seen Skyrim horses).

Sorry if this sounds rambly, I see this topic brought up sometimes and it piqued my curiosity.

horses being completely extinct is a distinct Avellone concern. advanced fans may be aware that horses are implied to be alive by the mention of a mare in fallout 2. one is seen alive in All Roads, which irked avellone. he also said a mention of horses was cut from FNV in raul's dialogue.

it's a radioactive topic among fans which is probably the biggest reason horses don't appear in 76. and as you mentioned they're also an obvious gameplay concern.

the extinction of horses and cats... it's fun, in a way. it does jog the imagination, just to imagine such a world. but the setting has become so large and various that it would be rather bizarre if they went extinct everywhere, all at once, immediately after the War.

it's the sort of absurd rule a sophomore fallout fan would quote to you as academic fact. undeniably, horses are extremely rare, but failing to qualify or explain that assertion is a leap in logic to serve an old mandate for a smaller setting. "there are no horses" makes more sense as a thing you say about regions and time periods than the setting as a whole.

personally i imagine most terrain is unsuitable for horses or vehicles, but i also reject their complete non-existence. i also feel the inclusion of cats in fallout 4 was bold and creatively interesting-- a restaurant owner in fallout 2 said they were extinct, as far as she knew, so fans treated that as hard canon, even though the same character mentions seeing cats earlier in her lifetime.

interesting note, as far as i know, there is zero evidence of post-War spiders

Cooking Crush Ep 4 Stray Thoughts

Last week, Prem adjusted his methods around Ten to avoid touching him. Ten repaired Prem's old oven mitt, and his friends teased him for his obvious crush on Prem. We left them right before a date. Meanwhile, Dynamite has moved in with Samsi because a body leaked fluids into his apartment, and Fire moved into the building as well after being given a bit of independence by his mom.

They are so correct to put a sparkling effect around Gun. He's always been beautiful, and it's what he deserves.

Off really does have good comedic timing. He's grown so much as an actor in the last decade.

"Why's This Salted Egg Spicy Salad So Sweet?"

Unsurprised that they're at the restaurant for the chef Prem admires.

I like Aungpao. Dynamite also deserves this sparkle.

The banter between Dynamite and Fire is fun to hear.

Prem is so jealous of the chef! He thought this was a date, and instead it's Prem fawning over this other man.

This whole ominous vibe just to go to another restaurant.

That was definitely a condom joke. Nice.

Oh, this was cute. I like them exploring how to eat and enjoy dishes.

I do love seeing characters express the specific ways they like each other and how the other has improved their lives.

Wow. Off really sold that fall from the bed.

Very funny that Gun's little sister is taller than him.

Dynamite truly is a menace. This would not work if he wasn't actually funny.

Man, Aungpao is talented. Where did they find him? It also seems like it's common knowledge that Prem is teaching Ten, and I'm curious what the eventual fallout of that will be, because Prem did really need that money for his sister the first time. I also wonder how much Chef Chang Ma will factor into this as a rival, and how much it'll be about the kinds of food they make/enjoy.

You know, I see so many fandom cookbooks for everything from Dragon Age, to the Witcher, Lord of the Rings, to Dungeons and Dragons, and Breaking Bad.

But I don’t see a Red Dead Redemption one being popular. I have a feeling it’d be Pearson’s stew - which binging with Babish did - jerky and stuff like that? (Side of botulism optional if the gang is to be believed). Abigail’s burnt roast?

Or would it be like Cowboy Kent Rollins? Historic and cultural?

Or the menus that we see from the various bars and restaurants?

Anyway, I don’t see it being as successful, but hey, a fallout 4 cookbook shouldn’t work out either with that logic! Edit: I don't know why it says comments are restricted?? I didn't set any settings or touch any comments. :/

On Hidden Agenda and if the Agenda is Really Hidden (Part 2)

Where we last left off on our road trip, @respectthepetty and I had pulled the clown car over, started checking out directions and trying to figure out where we went wrong in our theories and I sat down to re-watch the show to figure out what we missed. Last time I posited two theories and listed evidence to why I think that. Now that I have finished re-watching through episode 11, I think I'm backing off my Joke is a stalker theory. I'm not throwing it out completely, but I don't think that's what's happening here.

There's also something happening with Joke, Zo and the Clytie and Sunflower myth that Zo reads to Nita in episode 3. Zo is repeatedly conflated with the sun/sunshine - he has a sunset painting in his kitchen, Joke photoshopped Zo's face on a sun and said Zo is his sunshine. Joke is conflated with sunflowers - he gives them to Zo over and over. They do switch this role once each - Zo paints a sunflower on his ceramic vase in episode 3 and in episode 11, Joke tells Zo that he (Joke) is Zo's sunshine. To me, that also makes Joke Clytie, the one who was abandoned by someone they loved, who was just waiting for them to come back.

All of this in mind, here's the theory I've centered on: Joke did something bad in high school; his parents paid (or used other means) to get him out of any trouble he was in and it caused a huge fallout in their relationship. Oh, and it happened on Joke's birthday.

So with this new theory in mind, I'm going to go back through all the evidence I posted in the previous post and add it to this one, plus include evidence from the later episodes.

Episode 1:

In the flashback to the Freshy Contest, while Joke is scolding(?) Zo, he says, “What you said on that stage won’t change a broken system.”

Episode 2:

Joke tells Zo, “My tongue gets me in trouble.”

When Joke and Zo are debating about hidden agendas in relationships, Joke asks why he should tell someone things when he starts dating them because he should be able to tell things in his own time.

Episode 3:

Joke says “Before you get to know someone, you need to know yourself.”

Joke also asks/tells Zo to trust him for the first time.

Joke talks about the Triangular Theory of Love: Passion, Intimacy and Commitment

Joke is pretty worried when Zo crashes his bike and makes Zo ride with him instead.

Joke mentions that he used to go to the restaurant Zo picked out with his dad, back when they used to go out to eat; this suggests a distance between him and his dad.

During dinner, Joke says that “What you see of someone may not be the whole story,” and “Stay true to yourself.”

In the library, Joke tells Zo “I would never let someone I love face danger alone.”

The next day, Zo is sitting outside when Joke finds him and says that Zo wasn’t answering his calls. and it’s implied he was searching for Zo because he was worried.

Joke invites himself on Zo’s trip as if he’s afraid if Zo leaves without him, something bad will happen.

Episode 4:

Joke tells Zo he couldn’t leave Zo “alone and sad” and “I’ll never abandon you”

Joke also says “I only care for those who care for me.”

Joke is afraid of the glass bridge but he’s also to worried to let Zo go out on the bridge by himself.

After dinner, Joke says “Sometimes people don’t show all their cards.”

Episode 6:

Joke gifts Zo a sunflower pillow and tells him to look up the meaning, Zo searches up “liveliness sprung from despair.”

Joke insists on picking up Zo so Zo doesn’t go out in the rain/worried about his health.

Kot doesn’t seem to like Joke and extremely overreacts to the way Joke trying to get Zo to eat the food he bought. Now, Joke was maybe a little pushy, but Kot goes off the handle.

When cuddling in bed, Joke says “hugging for 30s releases Oxytocin” and if they hug longer, “it means we feel the same.”

Episode 7:

At the amusement park, Joke mentions he has fond memories of the park because he went with his grandma back in high school (implies the break or disconnect with his family occurred then).

Talk of changing bad memories to good ones (re: Puen)

Joke says "I've never seen so much blood and gore in my life" regarding the haunted house.

Joke's grandma tells Joke that any potential partner needs to be a "fighter".

When his motorcycle breaks down and Zo is surprised Joke can fix it, Joke says "when you love something you learn to take care of it"

Zo says that Joke "sounds like a life coach"

When dropping Zo off, Joke hugs him and says "it's been awhile since I hugged anyone besides my grandma" (ouch, just ouch)

When Joke can't get a hold of Zo, he panics and get the landlady to open Zo's door and is freaked out to find Zo asleep on the floor.

Joke and Zo take day off and make something that looks like vases and Zo paints a sunflower on his.

Despite Joke having a temper, he lets Zo handle Puen how he sees fit.

Episode 8:

Zo comments that Joke "spouts Hallmark lines"

When Zo tells Joke that he and Poom are going to Zo's room for school work, Joke asks "is he trustworthy?"

Joke gets a package of creepy pics (via Jeng) and races to find Zo.

Joke says "I'll take care of you" to Zo

When Joke, Zo and Nita bust Poom, Zo has to pull Joke off Poom.

Joke tells Zo "don't trust strangers too easily" and "if something comes up, we always talk"

Episode 9:

Joke asks "what will I do without you for three months" when Zo says he has to go home for break.

Joke wants three calls a day and a video chat before bed every night (that's a lot, Joke, damn)

Joke tells Jeng "you might regret it one day when you turn around and [Pok's] not there"

In the flashback to the Freshy Contest, Joke is sitting alone outside, looking melancholy when Zo approaches.

Zo offers to take Joke's place in the contest and asks if Joke is okay.

Joke says "no one should be forced to do anything" and "you're the first person to ask what I wanted"

Joke says he won't lie or hide anything during his apology

Zo insists "no silence, no hiding, no secrets"

Episode 10:

Joke is supposed to spend his birthday with his Grandma (Jeng is taking Joke's parents out to dinner).

Joke worries about Zo.

Zo's mom chooses "childhood trauma from parental conflicts results in troubled adults"

Zo quotes statistic of "50% of people with family conflicts commit crimes"

Joke tells Zo "your family and mine are not so different" and it's his "happiest birthday"

(holy time jump Batman - I guess three months have passed between leaving Zo's and the debate club scene)

We get the Wave and Trin back story but the most important part to me was Zo asking "was hitting someone the answer?"

Episode 11:

Joke advises his parents are not coming to the debate, he texted their family group chat and "got left on read"

Joke's family just rolls up to his apartment (does grandma have a key then?) and they just hang out waiting for Joke

Joke's dad films Joke's mom and grandma watching the competition video

Jeng comes by and says Joke is out with friends celebrating and Joke's dad says "it's good Joke is with friends"

Joke's dad sends the video of mom and grandma to Joke

With the preview for episode 12 alluding to more issues between Joke and his family, Joke's proven temper, his aloofness around people, his propensity to speak like he's been to therapy and his extreme concern over Zo, I think that something bad happened and Joke was the cause. His family/money/connections got him out of it, but he's angry and his family and him had a falling out (except for grandma). Abandoned by everything, he was left alone and in pain until he met Zo, his sun.

That is what is hidden in Hidden Agenda, and it was right in front of our faces the whole time.

Today I'm sharing the Sims 4 Build of a 50's American diner. I was super inspired by the famous Las Vegas so I wanted to make an over-the-top American diner with many signs and neon lights. This is not just a restaurant. It includes a karaoke machine, a dance floor, 3 computers, and a gaming room.

I'll be damned. AHS: Cult got really good in the second half. Apocalypse has been alright so far, but it feels like it's just ripping off Fallout with the Coop stuff. And really feels like odd fan service. I noticed in the opening credits there was a bunch of images from Coven, so I'm assuming they'll be a part of this at some point. Either way, it's alright.

I don't have to go in tomorrow morning. I get to wait until two, which feels almost like having an extra day off. So it feels awesome. I might actually get something done in the morning. It's highly improbable, but there's that chance.

Work was dead. Always is on Monday's. Especially since the league season is almost over. Then we'll be dead for the rest of spring and summer. Hours will get cut, and I will be hunting for a new job. I'm done with shit pay for the work I do. I'm not trying to sound arrogant, but I'm good at my job. I enjoy my job for the most part. And I have a nice reputation in town. Evey restaurant knows about me bringing that kitchen back from the dead when Jen left. Jen was…destructive and very very stupid in the kitchen. She somehow talked her into that kitchen and was awful at it. She used to add white wine to alfredo sauce, and not cook it out. I had to explain to her you have to cook the alcohol off, but she swore up and down by her ways. I refused. Eventually, she ended up going into the bar management, was found to be stealing a crap ton from the place and was fired. I took kitchen over, and Mike took over the rest. On paper, it's all him, but everybody knows me there. For someone who doesn't have any stake in the place really, other than it being a part of my life since I was a little kid, I am there way too much. I get that's the life of being a kitchen manager, I get that. But most kitchen manager's aren't making a measly 12/hr. That's it. 12 dollars. My checks are not sustainable. It's going to be super difficult to survive in my own place, and I don't want that. I need to make at least $16/hr to be viable. That's surviving plus a little leg room. I've figured it all out. So once this season has reached it's end, I'm going to find a second part-time job and switch over the summer. Enough's enough.

Ok so you know how Marvel has a what if scenario. You know how in the game Nick Valentine is a father figure. For Fallout 4 what if the original Nick Valentine was Nora's biological father, they had a close father/daughter relationship and everything. So Nick would have memories of raising her with the original Nick's fiancee (before the Eddie Winter killing her scenario). Then after they finally meet after Nora got out of her Vault. She treats him the same way she treated her father, she isn't bothered by his physical appearance of anything. She still has a habit of calling Nick "dad".

I'm not a good 'sad' writer but here's my attempt to kick you in the feels. Good luck (to you and me).

Fallout 4 Short Fic: 'Dad'

To Nora, life was shit.

From her view, the recent timeline of her life just kept getting worse: first, she got pregnant by accident. Not great, but manageable. Then she got fired for not being able to come into the office. Again, not the end of the world. Then a disastrous visit with her dad up in Providence leading to a no-contact situation brought her attitude down even further. Then, on a day when she'd planned to she a counselor and get her life back on track, the world literally ended. Nukes flew and she got locked in a cryopod - and seconds later, from her view at least, her husband, her one remaining ally in a cruel world, got shot right between the eyes by an unknown gunman. To top it all off, a kidnapping of the last meaningful thing in Nora's life.

So to put it mildly, Nora's first visit to Diamond City wasn't exactly a chipper vacation. Less then twenty minutes after she entered a desecrated stadium she had loved so much, she left in search of one apparent hope: some robot locked in the basement of a Vault.

Entering Vault 114, Nora's interaction with the triggermen was short. Asking to see the detective, Nora was brought before Skinny Malone - who she promptly shot, her mind so one-tracked that she would kill herself if it meant her body ended up in the next place she had to be on her absurd quest to find her son.

She walked through the vault, the remaining triggermen to scared to pull a gun on her. Walking to the bottom, she clubbed Dino in the head with a sledgehammer and opened the door to the overseer's office.

"Do I know you?"

Valentine's words cut like a sharp knife right into Nora's ears. No longer was she locked in a Shaun-induced trance, but her anger was far from gone along with it. She pulled her 10mm pistol and raised it right to Nick's temple.

"Maybe when you put that voice away and stop impersonating my centuries-dead father, I can tell you who the FUCK I am!"

Nora was on the verge of tears. Even in her belief that this was just some impersonator, some robot scanning her brain like the machines in Goodneighbor, to hear that voice again brought her to her psychological knees.

Nick observed the gun, then the wavering voice, then the tears welling up in Nora's eyes. Somehow, Nick's mechanical pupils grew massive. There must have been some glitch in his self-preservation subroutine, because he chose to ignore the barrel pressed to his power core. He wrapped his tattered arms around Nora, resting her head on his shoulder.

"You don't have to say anything, seaweed. I can't believe I'm seeing you again."

Nora's finger slipped off the trigger. The hug had switched the safety off, but the word 'seaweed' caused the pistol to fall out of hand completely.

Seaweed. It was a pun, one that was last told over two-hundred years prior. Seaweed. It was a play on her name, Nora. For her eleventh birthday, she'd been taken to the best Sushi restaurant in Boston. The only problem was that she was allergic to one primary ingredient: the Nori that coated the rolls and pieces of nigiri. When ordering, Nora had turned to the waiter and proudly asked for 'Two tuna rolls, but without the Nora. Nori! Without the Nori!", causing a storm of laughter from the table. From that point on, that was who she was. Seaweed. So much in such an odd word.

Nora dug her head deeper into Nick's covered shoulder.

"How? How is this even...I...I'm so sorry..."

She couldn't stop crying. And somehow, maybe it was the humidity in the air or the leaky pipe above his head, Nick shed a tear onto Nora's blue jumpsuit as well.

"It's ok kiddo, it's...I forgive you."

Nora embraced Nick even further, both enjoying nothing but being in each other's presence once again.

After a moment, Nick wiped his cracked cheek and spoke again.

"It's a really long story. One that would be better told at home. Wherever home is, anyway."

Nick stifled a laugh.

"I hope you don't mind, but I've been living out of your old house in Sanctuary Hills. I've tried to keep it in good shape, but 200 years can really do a number on a house. Specifically, a number of holes in the walls."

Nora's tears were broken by a single, sharp laugh from deep inside her stomach.

"If you're here, is Jenny? Shaun? Nate?"

Nick let out a saddened chuckle.

"I'm afraid you're stuck with just me for now. Those CIT eggheads only bothered to shit out one member of the family in Inspector Gadget form."

Nora looked up at Nick, his robotic face melting into a warm smile, one bringing her back to a time when a 'super mutant' was a side character in a 5 cent comic.

"Come on, Nora. Let's go home."

Still tightly holding Nora's hand, Nick started slowly walking out of the office, finding themselves back in the spacious atrium outside.

Summer Reading/Writing/Art Tag Game

1: Describe one creative WIP project you're planning to work on over the summer

UHHHHH well, I’m hoping to get back to more actively working on One if by Land, since I’ve been less than productive recently. But I’m also figuratively running a gauntlet at work these days, so I’m treading the line between work stuff stabilizing and spending more time writing again.

2: Rec a book

I understand that the next iteration of Jim Butcher’s Cinder Spires series is coming out later this year, so now is an excellent time to read or listen to The Aeronaut’s Windlass.

3: Rec a fic

I mean. @twosides--samecoin’s Long Time Running, for sure. (Not that I’m biased or anything) It is excellently written and hits the trifecta of good writing, art and music. She just released a new chapter, too!

4: Rec Music

I’ve not got half the good recommendations that the rest of my mutuals do, frankly, but I’ve been getting back to my middle-generation-millennial roots lately and listening to House of Pain.

5: Share One Piece Of Advice

Hmm. I‘ll reinvent the wheel trying to give this advice, but: if you are writing about fictional regions or places that have real-world counterparts, and you are ever privileged to be able go to those areas and look around, I find it’s worth doing so. That’s literally or figuratively: If you can’t do it in person, look it up on Google Street View. You’ll find so many tiny details you might otherwise miss, even if you’re super familiar with the places! Doing this forces me to think more about which characters would know these areas/take these routes and how they’d react to environmental details, etc. What places would they avoid, or drag others to salvage? Who’s going to go ass-over-teakettle down a particular path? Where’s a good fishing spot to put up a makeshift lean-to in an urban area?

I acknowledge that I’m very privileged in this regard given my subject matter, where I live, and the areas through which I’m likely to drive - it means I frequently get to do this exercise in person. When I’m writing fic for Fallout, I’m constantly going to relevant places, walking around and thinking about how each character might react to what I’m seeing (albeit two hundred odd years and an apocalypse removed from when I’m seeing it). I’m wandering around Takoma Park trying to figure out what tiny restaurants might have surviving signage. I’m the sketchass clambering around on narrow brush trails under overpasses in DC, climbing rubble heaps under bridges over the Potomac, and checking out the side elevator rooms in the Lincoln Memorial at 2 AM. I’m setting my phone up on my dash to take burst photos at I-90’s interchanges when I’m driving through Massachusetts. I’m looking in windows at the historic train station by the Monongahela, taking photos in the parking lot of certain airports and asking the park rangers which fire towers I can get away with climbing. I’m detouring to look at roadways leading to Bar Harbor when passing through Maine. I’m biking around Point Lookout State Park and taking pictures of the old amusement park by the boardwalk in Ocean City. But: When I’m not able to hit up these places in person, I’m in Street View doing the virtual equivalent; I’m in Google Earth looking at others’ geotagged photos of these places from the comforts of home!

Finding points of interest to shove into the narrative (or give me ideas for in-universe equivalents to those places) forces me to more thoroughly stand in my characters’ shoes. I find it helps with both describing local flavor and furthering character development, and perhaps that’s a useful tool for others as well.

So this is a tiny fandom and I know it's a harder sell for a lot of people BUT this is such a fun podfic even if you have minimal fandom knowledge. The tl;dr is what would happen if every restaurant that prepared food of any sort was outlawed except for the most expensive fancy ones. You woke up, and Starbucks, McDonalds, Dominos, and even your local grocery shop which has pre-made sandwiches - basically anywhere that makes food - were all closed. Forever.

This is a podfic about waking up in that world through tweets and articles and new stories and all the podfficers are having such a good time. There's also a ton of delightful bloopers that are in there as they brainstorm ideas.

The Thrilling Adventure Hour: Beyond Belief episode you never new you wanted. About Nemo, of course. Again with this one, basically no fandom knowledge is needed (which is good since this is a smaller podcasting fandom) but is so much fun!

From the effects to the voice acting these folks really captured the essence of Beyond Belief and I had such a fun time listening!
