Chapter 53. He's Happy

The walk across the road feels like he's trudging through quick sand. It's a bit confusing, because he also feels like he's having an out of body experience. Kie tried to get him grounded before they did this. Wanted him to be as down to earth and in control of he could be, but eventually he shook it off, resigning himself to this just being how he was gonna feel.

Kie holds his hand as they walk up to two steps to the front door. It's a burgundy red, painted no doubt by the current owner. She has a door bell and a knocker. He's not sure what to do until Kie gives his hand a reassuring squeeze, letting him know she's here. That she always will be.

That pushes him enough to want to rip the band aide off and he presses the doorbell, and a chime muffled through the door is heard.

"You got this," Kie tells him, and he shakes his head affirmatively.

The door opens a lot faster than he was expecting, making him flinch when it swings free, the person inside clearly not concerned with strangers knocking on her door.

Clair stands in light blue scrubs, ASICS for tennis shoes, and so he gets the immediate impression that she works in the medical field. Her blonde hair is singularly braided with a pink headband holding back fly aways. It looks like she's done something to it, like she got high lights or something; like Sarah Cameron does sometimes.

He has a hard time looking at her face, but when she greets them, completely unaware of who is at her door, he can't help but look up.

"Yes, can I help you?" she asks, holding a dish towel and seeming to be wiping her hands from some mess she made. She smiles, like it isn't a bother to her that someone is knocking, like she would be happy to help that she offered.

He's a little shell shocked if he's being honest. He knew his mom was a young mother, but she looks hardly old enough to have an eighteen year old. Even younger than Anne, he guesses, maybe mid thirties. Her eyes are like mirrors to his own. He always thought he got them from Luke. Didn't realize that it was really his mom that he inherited them from.

Kie clears her throat, but he doesn't say anything. His grip on her hand tightens though, and she gets the message that speaking isn't something he can do right now.

She gives a pressured smile, trying to appear non threatening. It's clear that Clair doesn't recognize the man in front of her, and it crosses her mind that maybe this isn't Clair at all. Maybe this was someone else that just lived here with her, or perhaps a relative?

That would explain the uncanny likeness. Her own parents and even Luke have admitted how much JJ looks like his mother, and seeing her in front of them Kie can't disagree. But it's more than looks alone.

It's her constant need to move that catches Kie the most. Like she can't sit still either, leaning on one leg and then the other. Crossing her arms and then putting them on her hips, like she can't find a suitable resting place for any part of her body for longer than a few seconds.

JJ, on the other hand, is uncharacteristically still, taking in the person he called mom with a transfixed expression.

"We're looking for Clair Dalton," Kie offers up.

Clair cocks her head to the side, interpreting Kie's slow admission as trusting, and happily acknowledges that, "I'm Clair, how can I help you?"

This time, Kie doesn't need to say anything.

"You wanted to talk to me?" JJ voices

How old is Elf?

Is Elf a teenager the same age as Jyugo? Or a much older man whose age does not match his appearance? I don’t know how many people have seriously thought about this question… But I’m one of those who really thought about it, and did a little research, re-reading the entire manga from beginning to end… From Elf’s first appearance, his meeting with Jyugo, chapters about Noriko Sanzou's past, and right up to the very final chapters, which also contain some information regarding how old our pointy-eared friend is. And I should note that this actually gave me a more or less clear answer to my question. Well… I'll lay out the facts. First of all, I think we should pay attention to the fact that Jyugo, during his first meeting with Elf, literally tells us about his age:

"I've never seen a guard around the same age as me before… Even if I assume he's an inmate, there shouldn't be anyone besides me who can get out…" Jyugo tells us that Elf is definitely a teenager. Or Jyugo mistook him for a teenager… Okay, let's not rush to conclusions. After all, the chapters that contain information about Noriko Sanzou's past tell us otherwise. As far as we know, Noriko Sanzou is 30 years old at the time of the events of Building 5. She is a grown woman, but Elf was present in her past, and he seemed to be her age, a little boy.

In this case, it would seem that the theory that he is a teenager is crumbling. This is logical, yeah. However, regarding Noriko’s age and appearance, not everything is as clear as it seems… Because next to her all this time was her younger brother Houdzuki, who is 8 years younger than his sister, but also looks almost the same age as her.

And if Houdzuki at the time of these chapters, for example, is 8 years old, then Noriko is 16… Thus, the chapters about Noriko Sanzou’s past cannot give us an accurate assessment of whether Elf is really her same age in childhood or not, because her appearance is completely does not exactly match her age and misleads us. In addition, apparently, Noriko saw Elf not in reality, but in her dream. (Chapter 132)

However, I propose to follow further, bypassing the profile of Elf from the anime, where his age is indicated as 16 years old… Much further.

So...

In chapter 422, we are shown none other than the moment of Elf's creation… Isou, Mashiro and Hiiro are near a large scarlet test tube, talking about a child who once existed, and whose cells were a panacea for all diseases.

And as far as we can see, this moment occurs some short time after Jyugo's birth, since Mashiro talks about Elf's "incompleteness" at the moment when Hiiro learns that he injected Elf's cells into Jyugo's body. (Unfortunately there is no English translation here, sorry)

And finally… Based on all this I can conclude: Elf is not just a teenager like Jyugo, he is even a little younger than Jyugo, and he is certainly not a grown man. And who knows, perhaps in chapter 61 Elf’s phrase that in the past he and Jyugo played a lot together has the most direct meaning… ;)

Really happy to hear that the last Attack on Titan special is reportedly 90 minutes long. I knew that 60 minutes wasn't going to be nearly enough time to cover as many chapters as they had left, which made me worried that they would end up cutting a bunch of stuff. But if the runtime is true here, it sounds like they're going to keep almost everything.

I’m so excited to announce that the final chapters of Truth & Reconciliation will be published over the next few weeks! I started writing T&R in 2021 when I was furloughed due to the pandemic and had a lot of free time on my hands. While it was great for my bank account to start working again, it wasn’t great for my fanfic writing free time and so I took an extended break throughout 2022. But…we’re back! Stay tuned for crimes committed, slow burns finally finding their flames, and the truth to be revealed!

In honor of finishing this story (and to continue to keep my motivation & excitement as I write & edit), I’ll be featuring some quotes, commissioned art and more!

Short chapter this week. It’s gonna be the next one that’s the last. It’s been a wild ride since starting this back in 7th grade. I’m so excited to come to the end. But yet… it kinda hurts. Chapter 17/17

"Hey," he says, eyes looking her over in an almost concerned manner. Like she would only be reaching out if she needed something.

"Hi," she echoes. "You did really good." His half heartened smile doesn't really reach his eyes.

"Yeah," he nods with a shrug. "Not enough though."

"Have you talked to the recruiter yet?"

"Probably gonna soon," he laments, catching her off guard.

"Are you worried about it?" she asks, trying to understand why he seems upset by that information.

He shrugs. "Not something you gotta worry about," he tells her. It's not unkind, just a fact. Like he's resigned it to be his problem and no one else's.

Her brows furrow, wanting to pressure him to talk to her about it. To tell her what's going through his head, but JJ is faster.

"What about you," he asks. "You got a deal yet?"

Recruiters have been at practices. Talking to her, coming to games, communicating with her coaches. Would make sense if she did.

"I'm committed to NCS," she tells him. He's always known that. "I sign next week." That's when it becomes real. When there is no going back on anyone's end.

JJ nods. "Good," he says. "You earned it."

"Thanks."

A silence fills them, but they don't look away from each other. Like their eyes can't be pulled away from the other person's gaze. It's heavy. And it's becoming too much for JJ.

The loss of his game has him in a weird limbo of emotions. On one side he was hoping he blew his chances with UNC. He'd be free if they didn't want him. On the other end he has the girl he's in love with right in front of him. Standing there, being her. Caring about him even after all the shit he's caused. Still checking in. Still wanting to know if he's alright.

He doesn't know if he can go a second longer without wrapping his arms around her. His breath hitches, and it's like Kiara is snapped back to reality.

"Is UNC where you really wanna go?"

A different look at Mutsuki Mashiro

Many Nanbaka fans consider Mashiro to be a cruel and unscrupulous bastard, obsessed with his experiments and willing to sacrifice even members of his own family for this. However, I think this is not at all the case, and he has nothing to do with the death of his daughter. After all, the real cause of Touko's death remains unknown to us, while we know that Mashiro only created clones of his daughter over and over again from her own remains so that she could give birth to her child. Perhaps being pregnant with the child of the 610th, she had no chance of survival. And knowing this, Mashiro gave up hope of returning his daughter, preferring instead to get at least her child — his biological grandson. And while treating clones as a consumable resource doesn't do him credit, I think, the man with the scar is not such a terrible monster that most Nanbaka fans see him as.

So this is it! The long-awaited ending!!

After way, way too long of a delay and 6 YEARS in progress, here is the final chapter of my beloved "Tongues of Fire" <3 <3 <3

Ok, so technically it's a final chapter plus an epilogue, but the final update is now up, and I just changed the chapter count to "complete"! This is a very emotional moment for me X')

You'll find more of me rambling about feels in the chapter notes themselves hehe, but let me say here that I can never express how grateful I am to all of you who stayed with me this whole time or joined in along the way. Your support means the world to me and you kept me going writing this 411k behemoth of a passion project!

The story would never have gotten to this point without you, and you're all heroes to me ^.^
