They’re a heartbeat away from doing something to that line in the sand they’d drawn a while ago.

Thank you @jay-avian for the tag you lovely human. These are a disjointed mess but the words are in there I swear.

Yes, that was the problem. Lex was right. And she hated him for it, for looking at her and the blood she left behind and somehow knowing that she had liked the silence of it, the thrill, the heart pounding act of destroying something. A building. A body. A life. But mostly, she hated herself. What messed up person enjoyed the thrill of murdering someone, and then going home to make blueprints for weapons so devastating they could destroy half a city?

They found her three hours later, leaning against a wall in some random corridor she had decided was quiet enough, faces grim as they pulled out restraints.

Rain smiled and offered up her wrists. “That took you less time than I thought it would. You must be getting faster at this.” One of the cops gave her a disgusted look, and she winked. “I really am an upstanding citizen then, pushing the police force to better themselves. Really, I should be commended-”

They took one last step forward, and the door to the warehouse slammed shut with a final, rattling thump.

“They’re going to die,” Melody whispered, and Jules didn’t disagree with her.

A second later, the screaming started. The camera was abandoned on the ground.

Minutes later, two faces appeared in front of the camera, torches materializing in their hands. They wore skull masks—one with the horns of a bull bending over their face, the other with a blank white oval painted with the claws and pincer of a scorpion.

There was a grim air to them as the light flickered over the shadows of their masks. There was blood speckled all over them.

“They want me to come back,” she said after a moment. “It’s an offer.”

Waters looked at the wounds deep and violently etched into the skin, deep trailing symbols covered in barely drying blood. Around them, the grass was splotched with blood in a massive pentagram, a star with seven sides. At the very top, dug into the grass so erratically there were clods of dirt flung everywhere, was the word ‘Mercy.’

Jules walked to it to get a better view, taking care not to step in the blood. Melody glanced down at the faceless body and stood to follow her.

When Lucy finally stopped tasting the sickening mixture of salt and iron on her tongue, Elira told the crew to wait half a mark more before swarming to the surface. When they did, they found sunshine dappling the planks of the hull, a slight breeze brushing against any bare skin.

A Chabad synagogue in Pomona, New York, burned to the ground on April 17th, along with its three Torah scrolls.

Torah scrolls are hand-written, hand-made, and kept in elaborately decorated cases or wrappings.

Many of them have long histories; my synagogue has two, I think, that were smuggled out of villages being destroyed in pogroms or in Nazi attacks. One of them is the only remaining piece of that village on earth.

Sometimes, the Torah scroll doesn't even belong to the synagogue, but is on loan from a place like the Memorial Scrolls Trust:

There's an entire Jewish holiday just for taking them out and dancing with them: Simchat Torah, "The Joy of Torah."

In fact, that was the holiday on which Hamas's invasion took place.

So it's a particular tragedy when a Torah is destroyed.

Chabad itself has a page about what goes into making just one Torah scroll:

"An authentic Torah scroll is a mind-boggling masterpiece of labor and skill. Comprising between 62 and 84 sheets of parchment -- cured, tanned, scraped and prepared according to exacting Torah law specifications -- and containing exactly 304,805 letters, the resulting handwritten scroll takes many months to complete.

"An expert pious scribe carefully inks each letter with a feather quill, under the intricate calligraphic guidelines of Ktav Ashurit (Ashurite Script). The sheets of parchment are then sewn together with sinews to form one long scroll. While most Torah scrolls stand around two feet in height and weigh 20-25 pounds, some are huge and quite heavy, while others are doll-sized and lightweight."

I learned all of this on Tumblr.

Once upon time, in people's "punch Nazis" days, I would've been able to find some mention on Tumblr of this synagogue burning.

There is none, so I'm posting about it.

And I'm going to quote Daniel Weiner, Rabbi of Temple de Hirsch Sinai in Bellevue, Washington, when his own synagogue was vandalized last November:

"It’s horrific and heartbreaking.... [Taking out your feelings about] what's going on in the Middle East by defacing a sacred space of a synagogue -- that’s the very definition of antisemitism."

I'm also posting about the Kehillat Shaarei Torah Synagogue in Toronto, whose windows were broken on Friday, April 19th, by someone who also tried to break the front door down.

And the April 15 graffiti outside a Bangor, Maine synagogue that said, "Nazi Israel 30K murdered," next to a crossed-out Star of David. The same synagogue faced pro-Hamas flyers plastered around it in November.

I was going to include all the synagogues vandalized over the past six months. But there are way too many. Several every week. Lots are swastikas.

I'll go back to just doing attacks on and near synagogues.

Someone has to talk about the 1-year-old who was stabbed outside Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel (BZBI) synagogue, in Philadelphia, on April 13th.

The foiled terrorist attack on a Moscow synagogue on April 11th.

The man who, on April 9th, screamed at the rabbi at Moldova's Great Synagogue, "What are you doing here? How come no one has finished you off for everything you are doing to the Palestinians?" Just one week after people had vandalized a Holocaust memorial in nearby Soroka, and sprayed "Free Palestine" on it.

The Oldenburg, Germany synagogue that was firebombed on April 5th.

The Florida Las Olas Chabad Jewish Center, which on March 16 burned, but not to the ground. The Torah scrolls were safe, and no one was hurt, but the back of the building was severely damaged.

The planned-but-thwarted-on-March-7th ISIS massacre in a Moscow synagogue.

The stabbing of an Orthodox Jew in Switzerland on March 5th. (He was badly injured, but expected to survive.)

A man leaving a synagogue in Paris was beaten on March 3rd.

People set the courtyard of a synagogue in Sfax, Tunisia on fire on February 27th. Firefighters managed to put the fire out before it consumed the inside of the building.

The synagogue is no longer used; there are no Jews left in its area, and fewer than 1,000 Jews left in Tunisia overall.

(Thousands of Tunisian Jews were sent to work camps during the Holocaust. Antisemitism across the Middle East continued to increase rapidly for decades. By the 1970s, 90% of Tunisian Jews had fled to France or Israel.)

On February 18, an Orthodox Jew leaving Synagogue of Inverrary-Chabad in Lauderhill, Florida, was beaten by an attacker yelling racial slurs.

Someone deliberately chose International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, to smash all the windows in the front of Sgoolai Israel Synagogue in downtown Fredericton, New Brunswick.

On December 29, Turkey arrested 32 people linked to ISIS who were planning attacks on synagogues and churches.

On December 17, a man drove a U-Haul truck up onto the sidewalk between a barrier and the front door of the Kesher Israel Congregation in Washington D.C., got out, and started yelling "Gas the Jews." He also sprayed a foul-smelling substance on two people leaving the synagogue.

December 17 also saw 400 synagogues across the United States receive bomb threats.

On December 11, a man attacked an elderly couple on their way into a synagogue in Los Angeles, screaming, "Give me your earrings, Jew!!" and beating one of them bloody with a belt. (Happily, he chased the guy down the street, and caught him when his pants fell down.)

On December 10, a 16-year-old was arrested in Vienna for planning an attack on a synagogue.

On December 8, on the first night of Hanukkah, 15 synagogues in New York State received bomb threats. And someone screamed, "Free Palestine," and fired shots outside of Temple Israel in Albany, NY. Which has a preschool that was in session.

Meanwhile, the five Jews left in Egypt were canceling public Hanukkah candle-lighting at their synagogue out of fear of reprisals. Particularly after two Israelis in Alexandria had been gunned down by terrorists on October 8. (While Israel was still fighting Hamas in Israel.)

On November 15, a terrorist group set the only synagogue in Armenia on fire.

Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) has a history of working with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

(PFLP is part of Hamas's network of groups. Samidoun is their nonprofit arm - which is why Germany banned Samidoun last year, although it's still active in many other countries.

PFLP is also actively supported by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), a diaspora nonprofit group, and Within Our Lifetime (WOL), an SJP spinoff in NYC.)

On November 11, halfway through Shabbat services, police asked Central Shul in Melbourne, Australia to evacuate "as a precaution" due to a "pro-Palestinian" protest that had chosen the neighboring park as its gathering place. Australia has seen some very outspoken antisemitism at protests, including the march shortly after October 7 that chanted "Gas the Jews."

Also on November 11, protesters targeted a synagogue along a march route. They sat in their cars, spraying green smoke and shouting at people leaving the synagogue. The march itself featured a record number of horrifying signs and chants.

On November 7th, Congregation Beth Tikvah in Montreal was firebombed, and the back door of the Jewish organization across the street (Federation CJA) was set on fire.

On November 4, protesters chanted "Bomb Israel," and burned an Israeli flag outside the only synagogue in Malmo, Sweden.

During October, there were 501 antisemitic acts under investigation in France in just three weeks, including groups gathering in front of synagogues shouting threats, and graffiti such as the words “killing Jews is a duty” sprayed outside a stadium.

On October 18, people firebombed a synagogue in Berlin after homes all over the neighborhood were graffitied with stars of David.

And also on October 18, hundreds of "pro-Palestine" rioters attacked the Or Zaruah Synagogue, in the Spanish enclave of Melilla in North Africa, while worshippers were inside.

Based on the video, they seem to have blocked the synagogue entrance completely, while screaming "Murderous Israel" and waving Palestinian flags. (Melilla is an autonomous zone belonging to Spain. It borders Morocco.)

On October 17, during pro-Palestinian protests, hundreds of rioters set fire to Al Hammah synagogue, an abandoned house of prayer in central Tunisia. They hammered down the building’s walls and raised a Palestinian flag on the building. Police did not intervene.

The Facebook page "Tunigate", which has around 88 thousand followers, published a video of the assault. So did "Radio Bousalem”, with 83 thousand users. The vast majority of comments on these videos welcome these acts. The building was severely damaged and almost completely razed to the ground.

On October 15, bomb threats were sent to many East Coast synagogues. Attleboro synagogue Congregation Agudas-Achim received one of the emails, which read, "The bombs will blow up in a few hours. A lot of people will die. You all deserve to die."

On October 8 -- again, while Hamas was still in Israel -- Madrid’s main synagogue was defaced with graffiti that read “Free Palestine” next to a crossed-out Star of David.

And on October 7, an assailant in Rockland, NY fired a BB gun at two women entering a synagogue. Later in the month, a banner at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in the area was vandalized with the words, “Fuckin kikes."

anyways thought it'd be fun, given my previous post about his dissociation with conversations, to try and guess what his takeaways were from his phone call with Charlie based on his reactions

Maybe I'm wrong about what he's catching and what he's missing but either way I had fun

I'm so close to writing about a character being beaten over the head with a rusty shovel and bleeding out dying to prove just how easy angst is to write

#Humour is so much more challenging than angst and I'm not going to take it back #It takes actual skill and effort to make funny jokes and laugh #Actually great s-tier angst makes you feel like you're transcending to a new plane of existence but you can still hurt people pretty easily #I just find the hard-hitting angst sticks a lot harder #Since most of the time it's either relatable or has been built up to exceptionally well #As opposed to most angst oneshots where it's just a quick and somewhat meh dose of pain #Give me suffeing for 20k words minimum or give me death #sp-rambles #Am I arguing over anybody about this?#No of course not I made a strawman to get mad at like usual #Except IG it's also true here #Comedy is seem as a lesser form of writing than tragedy and whatnot #Which it isn't inherently so

hi!! i know u talk a lot about aromanticism a lot on here, but i don’t think i’ve ever seen u talk about aromantic anthy. would u mind discussing/elaborating on it or linking to a post where u do because i’m very curious!!

i got a similar ask half a year ago or something ridiculous like that on my main blog, but i’d like to really do justice to my url right now and explain it in more concrete terms.

i will say, it’s important to bear in mind that this reading of anthy’s character is very much informed by my own experiences, and a lot of those experiences are ones im not keen to talk in depth about. but you know. let’s make some nebulous gestures towards ideas of being traumatised, being autistic, struggling to meaningfully connect with others and honestly not really wanting to do such because of how they treat you.

like ive previously said, an aromantic perspective on the world would, i think, really benefit anthy. when youve lived your whole life experiencing violence at the hands of these patriarchal structures, of which romance is absolutely one, it’s kinda like. damn. im uncomfortable buying into those ideas.

anthy also has this lovely line in ep 19 where she says to utena ‘romance either happens or it doesn’t’ and it’s just sooooooo. so very interesting to me, actually, that anthy would say something so black and white about ‘romance’, a topic that anthy knows better than a lot of rgu characters is hopelessly confused and arbitrary and often enabling violence. and utena (fellow aromantic gaybo) says 'yeah, i know, but...'. these simplifications, these elisions. what is and isn't articulated. but what? maybe things are much more complicated than we'd like to think.

anyway enough of that tangent. one thing i as a trans and aromantic person always return to when discussing trans and aromantic readings of characters/texts more broadly is that there's no singular piece of evidence that can really cement these readings as Undeniable. it's like. okay. there's a critique of romance as a patriarchal structure in revolutionary girl utena. there's an ambiguity about anthy's feelings towards characters like utena, where there is clearly a queer connection but it takes shape in unconventional and complex ways. me, i'm aromantic, i see all of these pieces and i go oh well that's because she's an aromantic lesbian. you know, there's plenty of little moments i can evidence but those moments can be used to argue for an alloromantic lesbian anthy too. romance is a very arbitrary thing and i think everyone should take their own approach to it unapologetically. of course, mine is that it's hellish and i want nothing to do with it, but im just one guy. and im okay with that. i feel strongly about this reading and it is personal, and id be dishonest to say otherwise, but i do also find that it's well-evidenced in the text. as one of my lecturers once said, don't worry about authorial intent, it isn't real <3

#and authorial intent is NOT real i really cant emphasise that one enough #like it's fun to engage with the stuff a writer/director/whoever thinks about their art #and it can be very useful #but it's not definitive. that's not the last word on the topic #like did be papas consciously write any rgu character as aromantic? idk probably not #but i find such powerful aromantic narratives and themes coming through in this show #in how it chooses to examine relationships and power dynamics and the pervasive nature of romance as a concept #how it is so easily unequal how it is DESIGNED to be unequal how it offers chivalry and safety to mitigate harm #which it directly enables. makes easier #and that doesnt mean that aromanticism is the only solution bc you know. some ppl do feel romantic attraction #but it's like ok let's rethink 'romance'. let's combat amatonormativity let's challenge the relationship hierarchy that privileges #families and romantic partners in such a dangerous dangerous way #and i see all of that in this show and it resonates so deeply with my experiences many of which pertain to aromanticism #and you know. this show made me accept that im aromantic. so i think that speaks to how strongly these themes come through #but i digress. i find it hard to talk about this stuff bc its deeply personal and quite arbitrary #and also every time i do someone sends me anon hate about how i hate gay people. which is so cool btw please keep doing that #i didnt realise that loving being gay and loving gay people and loving when gay people love each other made me homophobic /s #just to clarify for the second time that is all sarcasm im gay and aromantic and i dont have time for arophobia here #anywayyyyy #im aware of all the asks ppl have sent me. im working on it i prommy <3 #dais.txt #dais talks aspec

gin-san really learned from the best 😭 he was ready to leave the yorozuya for decades if that's what it took to find shouyou/utsuro. sadaharu could've been stuck as a ball for DECADES and tama could've woken up to a world with no gin-san etc. etc.

I haven’t gotten that far but I’ve seen posts and a looooooot of ppl seem mad about the miscommunication in Young-Woo’s life. Some are mad about the break up due to insecurity that could be “easily solved” and some are mad about her dad never reassuring her. And those are valid feelings - but I don’t know why you’re all mad at the writers for these decisions.

First off, I kind of wanted them to break up at some point. Normally I hate this kind of thing, but this is her first relationship. I wanted to see her be treated as a person, who makes mistakes and falls out of love and changes her mind. Why should her very first romantic endeavour go according to plan? She’s not a fairy tale character.

Based on what I’ve seen I think all the decisions are decidedly IN character. Let’s not pretend anyone is above insecurity. Let’s not pretend ppl aren’t capable of falling into assumptions. Junho makes assumptions about YW all the time. In many ways, his approach to being w/ her is to dote on her, please her, as if she’s a child. And like EVERY allistic person I’ve ever met, as he gets more comfortable w/ her and their relationship he drops the routine that established it (direct communication) and instead falls into his natural way being (intuitive social understanding). He begins to assume things. He assumes, after promising to wait to know each other, that they’ve peaked and are official.

He doesn’t explicitly ask this. He just. Assumes. Because he’s NT. because he’s used to this being unspoken. He became comfortable and fell back into a pattern. It’s normal.

I mean, I’m watching in live time the entire audience do this.

“Where’s the directness that’s canon to YW’s personality????”

What’s directness? When has YW ever been direct about her feelings outside of things she’s confident in the knowledge of? Insecurity is in everyone and insecurity in autistic ppl keeps us alive. Feeling safe and trusting others is a danger (and yes it sounds like a contradiction because autistic ppl are naturally very trusting but on an INTIMATE level we aren’t).

YW believes she’s a charity case. It may not have been said but that’s a fact. All she knows is that Junho is kind. Kind ppl do nice things. Like hang out w/ autistic ppl even if they make them feel lonely. Junho doesn’t ever really contradict these things (because he doesn’t realise he has to).

And the audience in many ways is no better. Time and time again I see applause for Junho demanding boundaries and compromises from YW. Ppl clap and say “it’s good that he’s not the only one working at this”

Junho has only ever had to stretch his social muscles when it comes to YW. YW is doing it all the time. For everyone in every aspect of her life. So to conserve energy, she watches for patterns, makes assumptions.

From the discography of her life, YW knows how this ends. It ends with her being a burden. Her being proven unloveable. Her being alone. She’s nipping it in the bud. Before it hurts too much.

All her life, despite audience and in-world people belief, YW has born the brunt of social responsibility. Born the fallout. If something goes wrong, it’s her fault, if there’s a miscommunication, it’s her miscommunication. She should’ve known better, learned faster. If people dislike her, that’s on her. When people *like* her, it’s an accident.

She’s been taught her whole life to accept other peoples feelings, and bottle her own. Despite seeming cold, despite seeming selfish, YW is very self-punishing.

God I’m losing my thread of thought.

What I’m saying is the miscommunication is not only applicable - it’s learned. YW doesn’t defy people when they tell her she makes them lonely. Doesn’t talk about her own loneliness in response. She accepts it. In her eyes it’s true.

I mean look at her dad.

In all of six episodes I’ve seen, never once has he shifted the responsibility of his own happiness off YW’s shoulders and onto himself. He’s her parent, and yet he blames his daughter for his loneliness. Because she’s autistic, I’m sure on some fundamental level he doesn’t believe she can feel it. But. She. Canonically. Does.

And so we’re here. With Junho who believes someone as direct as YW will believe him when he tells her things, but also openly expected her to *intuit* a change in their relationship. And YW who deeply believes that every person in her life lacks fulfilment when she’s part of it.

So she breaks up with him. Tells herself it’s pragmatic actually. Honest. Choosing to see another way goes against everything she knows to be true, and autistic are nothing if not rigid when it comes to their life lessons.

This makes sense. It’s me. It’s every time I chose to act against my better judgement and hurt because of it.

Meanness in others is painful but usually it’s upfront. I can handle open hostility. The hostility beneath the surface tho? The hostility of the people I love, who blame me for their loneliness? The people who, despite knowing how I am, insist upon change anyways? Because now we know each other?

You don’t know YW. she wouldn’t insult you like that. Wouldn’t stick her hand into a flame like that. People hide themselves, and so shall she.

Miscommunication is *human*. It’s an aspect of a deeply neurotypical society because patriarchy *thrives* in the grey area.

I haven’t watched it. I’m following the outrage online but I don’t agree with it. I don’t blame Junho. I don’t blame YW. I know where this knot started and it’s hard to blame people when they’re hurting themselves.

For a final thing to leave with my allistic readers. I understand you’re confused because YW *is* typically very direct. But you’re perceiving the moment wrong. Autistic people are always attempting to mimic allistic ones. It’s what we think you want. It’s what we *know* you want.

Young-woo read into a situation, and chose to read the writing on the wall. It’s the wrong writing, the wrong wall. She doesn’t know that though, all the walls look the same to her. She chose to bow out. She both thought this is what people wanted, and felt too insecure to challenge it.

IMO the only character who has ever challenged her defeatist attitude is Suyeon. I can imagine Suyeon yelling at her “are you going to spend the rest of your life letting other people decide your happiness?” I imagine Young-woo would listen to Spring Sunshine Suyeon. She’s always taken the lids off difficult bottles.
