if i have permission to be a bit of a bitch in your inbox (feel free to ignore this if not), the dichotomy people build between bl and queer media is sooooo fascinating. and of course by that i mean it gives me hives. the universalizing of 'real queer experiences' is obnoxious as hell, but how its been applied to ofts has really shown me why i find it so obnoxious. most of the people who hold this dichotomy would never classify a bl that ignores homophobia as 'authentically queer' media. but i definitely saw people who hoped that the 'authentically queer' ofts would exist in a bubble without any slutshaming, or that it would be resolutely shut down in show. but in my aroallo experience? that would be as inauthentic as the no homophobia bubble, so where does that leave us?

also the circular logic in the bl vs queer media arguments is mind numbing. 'bl doesnt cover these types of themes' yeah dude because you forcibly remove everything with those themes from the bl category in your head. 'queer media must acknowledge homophobia' the idea that a story by queer people about queer characters isnt really queer because it chooses to focus on joy or discovery or any other facet of queer existence is so fucking depressing. go hug a queer friend and think about why you feel queerness is defined by suffering before anything else.

So, first off, let me just say how much I hate the term “authentically” queer. It seems to suggest that in order to be queer, you have to be queer a certain way. As an ultra femme lesbian, the queer community often makes me feel like I’m not queer enough. That I don’t understand the hardships that come with being gay because I am “straight-passing.” This is the same thing people do to BLs. News flash: if you’re queer, you’re queer. Period. Congratulations, that’s all it takes to be authentic!

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that a large percentage of the people I see using this designation are straight women who think that queer suffering is a necessary part of the queer experience, but a lot of “authentically queer” people—me included—don’t want to be reminded of our real-life suffering every time we turn on the TV. Heartstopper is triggering for me. Bad Buddy is not. As a queer woman currently living in Ron DeSantis’s Florida,  I deserve to be able to turn on the TV every once in a while and not be reminded that there are people in the world who want me dead.

I’ve learned that when people describe a BL as “authentically queer,” what they actually mean is “This BL feels more Western”—the racist insinuation there being that Western media is inherently better.

I feel like The Eclipse is a good example of this hypocrisy. No one has ever called The Eclipse “authentically queer” despite the fact that it delivers one of the most nuanced takes on the dangers of systemic homophobia that I have seen anywhere. The writers of both the source material and the script are gay men. The director is queer. That seems to meet all of the qualifications these people set for “authentically queer” and yet no one has ever questioned that The Eclipse is a BL. Why? Because it incorporates traditionally Asian/yaoi humor tropes such as the pratfall and the accidental kiss. 

Are you sensing a pattern? It’s not the queer-ness of a piece of media that determines whether it is seen as “authentic.” It is its “Western-ness.”

Let me be very clear: All BLs are “authentically queer” media because the only requirement needed for a piece of media to be “authentically” queer is for the characters to be queer. And if you don’t like that, then maybe stop watching BLs.

If the people who were producing these shows had a problem with the term, that would be another discussion, but they don’t. P’Jojo has never advertised Only Friends as anything other than a BL. The fandom did that for him. And with all due respect, if the people making the fucking thing are calling it a BL, then it’s a fucking BL.

So, yeah. Not liking BLs doesn’t make you cool. It makes you a bigot. The fact that the term has become so derogatory is rooted in both racism and misogyny because this was originally a genre created by women, for women, and the hobbies of women are so often infantilized.

More Thoughts On Visibility

So far, the reception to my Isidore art has been absolutely wonderful, with only one bout of hostility that was from people who hated me for being trans anyway. (I blocked them all, and that seems to have been enough of a firebreak to stop any further incidents.) I'm very thankful for your response, and while I may nudge and needle my audience, I never want to shatter that trust by making this art cruel or bigoted.

However-

I worry in the back of my mind about this art spreading to people who will take it in the worst possible faith, even other queer people. There are plenty of platforms where I'd be hesitant to say "this is inspired by childrens' literature, furry porn, webcomics about utterly radioactive subject matter, and several artists who have been the target of smear campaigns." I worry about this body of work shutting me out from making or teaching all-ages art. And although Ron DeSantis is surely far too busy to notice me saying he fucked his mom in an outhouse, I worry that a public figure or institution I antagonize might just be bored enough to retaliate.

Maybe this is just me having an inflated sense of my own reach. Possibly, but then again I have no idea how bigots found my work the first time, and I worry that the next incident won't blow over in a day. Maybe it'll mutate into some long-lasting libel.

I have no intention of sanitizing or slowing down my output, to be clear. Fuck a heckler's veto. I'm honored to be so well-received, and although I don't want that to become a weight of obligation to carry on past when I want to, it's great at dispelling this dread.

I trust you to identify libel just as I trust you to understand why I'm reclaiming slurs. I trust you to calmly bow out if this is too much for you. I trust you to get why I'm invoking Where The Wild Things Are alongside Robert Mapplethorpe.

Do Or Do Not, There is No Fighting Disney

((For context, I wrote this for class and decided to share it here.)

Ron DeSantis, take your L and do it well.

The LGBTQ+ community has been parked pretty with our bucket of caramel popcorn and Mickey Mouse pretzels. Because one does not simply go against Disney lawyers and expect to win. It is as simple as do not or do not. There is no try. And by the Magic Kingdom, did DeSantis try?

Pardon my glee, but this is up there with Trump being indicted and Stacy Plasket throwing back papers on national television. (Count your blessings, Elon. You were supposed to be on my chopping block this week.) Now I can understand if I’ve lost you like DeSantis did. But give me a second to give you all the details of the royal smackdown presented by the House of Mouse.

Now, as some of you may know, Florida has become something a…. What’s the word? Joke. And a terrible one at that. With a “man” like DeSantis in charge, the state has become the subject of more memes and episodes of The Daily Show than any other. The increasing bans on anything that will hurt a Karen’s feelings or call out a Ken on his bullshit are slowly lowering the state’s IQ. No one wants little Timmy to feel bad about history or come home asking his parents the hard questions, so it's easier to make sure he won't ask them in the first place. Because guilty consciences usually fight the hardest. And heaven forbid the people in charge of serving the people follow the proclamations of the good book that they so claim to follow and wield as a weapon of self-righteousness. For why would they love their neighbor who has no bearing or effect on their personal lives when they could just as easily let their blind hate lead them by the nose? Because heaven forbid that a rainbow, a symbol of peace, love, and acceptance be used for just that. Let’s simply ban it altogether.

Let’s make sure no one can say, Gay!

Heh. No. While I normally don't support multi-billion dollar corporations, I will gladly give Disney my vote when they inevitably run for President. Because Disney most definitely said, Gay.  Especially with the main character of their hit show, The Owl House, being openly bisexual with a lesbian girlfriend. Let’s not forget the married gay couple and the non-binary representation in the show. The company simply told Florida that they will stay in their self-governed lane and say, Gay. 

DeSantis took offense to this and decided to make Disney his new campaign promise. Because nothing screams competency and a desire to serve your eg- I mean the people like squaring up with the House of Mouse. Especially when you're pulling books like Maus off the shelves because you don't want to acknowledge your own hypocrisy. Now, I would like to point out that this was the moment when most of TikTok knew that he fucked up. Because everyone and their blind cat know that Disney lawyers are paid too much to lose. Ronny Boy thought he had one when he was able to take away Disney’s self-governing status and turned Reedy Creek over to his specially selected board (Swisher). The plan was to basically gain all the money and royalties they felt entitled to and make bank off of Disney. That is not what happened. 

Instead, Disney pulled out the biggest UNO reverse and slammed several draw four cards with an additional wild draw four card.

The board, and by extension Florida, has inherited Disney’s billion-dollar debt. Not only that, but the board has zero control over any of the entertainment mogul's intellectual property and has no right to make any changes to its parks until “21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, King of England living as of the date of this Declaration.” (Cho). This means until the last of the British monarchy dies out, Florida cannot touch any of the characters of influence that DeSantis oh so desperately tried to put his fingers on without the most cutthroat lawyers known to mankind coming for his neck. Disney tied its fate to actual royalty in a power move that will be taught in law schools for decades to come. 

In the end, DeSantis fucked around and found out. And Disney said, “You’re welcome”.

I don't think Charlie Crist stands a chance against Ron DeSantis, and even if he did he wouldn't be able to accomplish much, what with the Republicans controlling the state legislature; if by some miracle he wins, they'll use the lame duck period to pass tons of new laws to strip the governor of all power, just like in Wisconsin, Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, etc. Democrats chose NOT to do this in Virginia last year when Youngkin won and Republicans flipped one house; they could have neutered him and prevented his party from making ANY progress, but no, they thought that would be petty and unfair (funny how Republicans never have reservations against pettiness and unfairness when they're in charge...)

What comes next for Florida? Really? Ron DeSantis gets another term, poor people and black people and queer people will continue to be fucked over, education will collapse, and then he'll run for president in 2028 (not 2024; Trump is running in 2024, and no Republican will ever challenge him because they would be thrown out of the party faster than you can say "Liz Cheney"). But what happens in 2026? Who do we get then? Rubio and Prick Scott aren't going anywhere, so DeSantis can't just run for Senate as the next rung up on the power ladder, and he can't run for a third term (unless the Republicans amend the constitution, which wouldn't even be all that hard; it requires a majority vote in a referendum, and they could hold it as early as next year, the off year, specifically to drive down turnout), but who could possibly do a worse job than DeSatan? Matt Gaetz? Just kill me now... It's gonna be someone who's batshit fucking insane, we can all be certain of that. It's a race to the bottom, everyone in the Republican party is competing to be crueler and dumber and more egregious than those who came before them with no clear end goal besides riling up the most people and fsnning the highest flames.

There is no fixing this.

People joke about California breaking away from the continent and drifting out to sea, and it really makes me wish that Florida was on a faultline so it could break off too and sink into the Caribbean. This cesspit of a state is irredeemable, inhospitable, nearly uninhabitable, what with all the hurricanes and the floods and the skyrocketing cost of living and neonazis in every single police department from Key West to Pensacola. Then the onslaught of laws targeting the trans community, limiting their access to health care they need and unleashing a wave of transphobic all over ourcountry. Also laws targeting the lgbtqia+ community, banning drag shows, that in theit history never hurt anyone. There a celebration.

We the people, remember there are way more of us then any political party, any amount of politicians, no matter how much powerful they think they are. We our number them! Seriously idk why some people can't phathom the fact that trans women(MtF) will need to see an obgyn sometimes.

Or that some people are intersex? Like legally im FtM but biologically i was diagnosed afters years of development issues as intersex(xy chromosomes, and misuse of estrogen in development caused me so many problems, it literally wrecked my body to the point all my internal organs was stuck together and none of my reproductive systems were viable because it was too infected and too far gone)

Ohh and have i mentioned that because the obgyn didn't do her research and just prescribed me with astrogen at 16(cause i wasnt developing at all)

It kickstarted endometriosis (nerve endometriosis at that) and for almost two years now im dealing with paralyzed lower body, and still they have the nerve to tell me that i should've accepted myself and i shouldn't have ' mutelated my body'

As if they know shit about trans pple and the experience, or anything more than their basic biology that even that like my highschool taught more.

At this point ive been to so many doctors, been hospitalized for months on end and still pple who know shit about gynocology have the nerve to tell me i need a mental health specialist, as if I wasn't getting any already.

So yeah ive been with an mtf friend to her first gynocology appointment cause she was terrified.

Its not all about the womb, somtimes they need to check the vaginal canal(even if its not 'real one' )or anything related to the urethra, cause in here usually urologists is for pple who have a penis only.

Edit: this happened 3 years ago when my friend needed an obgyn for the first time and an old lady who heard us talking, mainly me calming her cause she was nervouse, and the old lady picked on her being trans and just started a scene but in the end she was escorted out by security so my friend ended up with no harm beside a minor trauma.

DeSantis Borrows a Page from Hitler - Vows to ‘Destroy Leftists’ When Elected

So, it seems Donald Trump isn't the only Republican candidate for president who spent Memorial Day vowing to crush his political enemies.  While appearing on Fox and Friends, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was asked, “Why is right now the time for Ron DeSantis to run for President?”  The Florida Governor responded by saying, “Because I will serve two terms, and I will destroy leftism in this country.”

Wait - the hateful little bigot who is currently getting his ass kicked by Mickey Mouse said what?  Now, whoa there, Miami Mussolini!  Is it just me, or does this resentful little prick have about as much broad appeal as a bowl of rotten fruit?  He should remember the rest of the country isn’t fucking Florida.  You see, unlike Ponce de Leon, Ron DeSantis isn’t interested in finding Florida’s “Fountain of Youth.”  Instead, he headed straight for the “Fountain of Hate,” and has hopes to bathe the rest of the country in its nasty waters.

I mean, what’s so concerning about a national presidential candidate basically declaring if he’s elected, he will “exterminate” the opposition?  Hell, what’s he going to do, round us all up?”  Don’t answer that!  Why can’t the guy be satisfied with boycotting Bud Light or banning rainbows in Florida?  Of course, in the interest of fair play, I’m sure our Republican friends would have no problem whatsoever if Joe Biden were to declare that after he wins the next election, his goal will be "destroy conservatism.”

Now some may ask, what’s the main difference between DeSantis and Trump?  Well, the difference is it took Trump decades to become the asshole he is today, but DeSantis took a crash course.  DeSantis is a guy so bitter and hateful that when he looks in the mirror - even his own reflection hates him.  I mean, nothing says “I will heal this fractured nation” quite like “I’m gonna destroy all of you liberal fuckers.”  Hell, Biden recently said, “There's no place for anti-Semitism in America,” and Lauren Boebert called that “an attack against conservatives."  

So, perhaps GOP voters might wanna “think twice” before voting to “destroy leftism in this country” - because that would mean ending social security, medicare, decent wages, women’s rights, the five-day work week, the eight-hour day, child labor laws, any shot at affordable healthcare, environmental protections, and a host of other benefits Americans have come to rely on.  All of which are “leftist” programs.  Unfortunately, “thinking twice” has never been a top Republican voter priority.

Swing states, listed in order of how easily Dems should give up on them?

Well of the 10 closest states from the 2020 election, I don't think we should give up on any of them. Here are the states in order from the smallest percentage margin to the largest.

Georgia (Biden by 0.2%)

Arizona (Biden by 0.3%)

Wisconsin (Biden by 0.6%)

Pennsylvania (Biden by 1.2%)

North Carolina (Trump by 1.4%)

Nevada (Biden by 2.4%)

Michigan (Biden by 2.8%)

Florida (Trump by 3.4%)

Texas (Trump by 5.6%)

Minnesota (Biden by 7.1%)

I'd say that of these, Texas, North Carolina, and Georgia are definitely trending towards Democrats although as you can tell, Georgia was way too close for comfort and Trump won North Carolina and Texas, the latter by about 600,000 votes. I'd include Arizona in this but I can't help but think that AZ's leftward shift is due to Trump, the ghost of John McCain, and the Arizona GOP being lunatics but we'll see. The thing is, the Sunbelt is shifting left because of college-educated suburbanites who, like I've said, are not reliable coalition partners because they pay for government programs without benefiting from them, and will gladly vote Republican if the GOP isn't totally insane.

The states that are moving away from Democrats are Wisconsin for sure and to a lesser degree Michigan and Pennsylvania because we're getting annihilated with white people, especially those without a college-degree, and I sincerely hope Dems do better with them this fall or we're fucked. If you remember, Obama won Iowa and Ohio twice but until Democrats fix our white voter problem, we aren't going to be competitive in those states, like I really hope Tim Ryan can pull it off but it's an uphill slog.

As for Florida, it's a crapshoot because Florida Dems are really unorganized and don't know how to get out the vote, but the reality is that FL is a true swing state in terms of demographics. The issue is, the Democrats there aren't progressives, they openly hate socialism, and also, Dems don't turn out while Republicans go to the polls, rain or shine, and vote for Marco Rubio and Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis, even while hating them. @femalegothic is more informed than me though since she's from Ron DeSantis' homeland.

So yeah. Democrats shouldn't give up on any states on this list, but every day I'm thankful that Schumer isn't in charge of the DSCC anymore because if he was, we'd be in a MUCH worse place for the midterms. But we'll see how November shakes out I guess.

living in Florida is so gross you guys especially after almost ten years in Portland

like when you spend your whole life living somewhere shitty you never really KNOW what it’s like to live somewhere NICE?  And while I spent summers near Chicago that was like, isolated family stuff, I spent most of my life in FUCKING Florida, and then then I lived in central Virginia, and then in Alabama, and then in Florida again, and then Virginia again, and THEN I spent like a glorious near-decade in Portland and it was like... holy shit, this is what it’s like to live somewhere you actually like.  Where you feel like you fit in.  Because culturally I’ve lived in all these southern places and I’m sorry I know there’s loads of discourse about southern culture being great actually on this website lol but I HATE it.  I find southern “hospitality” be like, fake niceness lol.  Midwesterners are nicer, but it’s also like, BALLS ass cold in the midwest so I don’t really want to go back there either?

But in the PNW I just legit felt like people were nice and the culture was a place I personally fit in.  That mellow stoner culture is just very much me.  And the weather is so mild and gloomy and everything is so GREEN and like I never felt the sort of tension I feel when i go out into super red part of Ron DeSantis’ Florida where I hate the weather and I hate the nature.  Like, the beach is such a hostile nasty place to me lol I NEVER go.  It’s just generally too fucking hot outside ALL the time for me, not to mention TOO FUCKING SUNNY for someone who suffers from constant chronic migraines.  And not to mention every time I get in my car I end up behind some yokel with stickers that say like LET’S GO BRANDON or some stupid shit and it’s always some absolutely enormous truck that is definitely compensating for something

not to mention Florida medical marijuana is really just a fucking racket bleeding patients dry, the prices we pay would curl a Californian’s hair.  and since I have MS and a fixed income this is super important to me.  

I miss crunchy granola people lmao the west coast is totally the best coast

My two biggest domestic fears with the Gaza massacre are:

1) A huge increase in anti-Arab racism and antisemitism alike. Here on tumblr, I probably don't have to mention the demonization of Palestinians as everything from "terrorists" to "homophobic Muslim extremists". I probably DO have to mention the sheer amount of full tilt "new world order" nazi rhetoric I've seen passed around, because much of it has been ON tumblr.

I'm begging you. Please, please look out for that. If you trust yourself to recognize one bigotry but not the other, then PLEASE study the one you're not familiar with. Fearmongering about refugees or trying to harm diaspora Jews will be the OPPOSITE of helpful. This goes double if your knee-jerk response to the antisemitism point is to assume it's just a distracting whataboutism - stop and interrogate that feeling. Do you think what's going on in Gaza makes someone killed in an American or European antisemitic hate crime less dead? Somehow at fault? Do you not believe it will happen despite the fact that many synagogues already need armed guards and receive regular bomb and shooting threats? If so - you're part of the problem.

2) Anti-voting rhetoric. I'm already seeing a significant amount of it and...guys. Guys. Do you seriously think that, within 12.25 months, the American political system will be so thoroughly overhauled that there will be a viable third option between Biden and whichever fascist the Republican party shits out as their candidate? Do you really think that electing Trump, or worse, Ron "Kill The Queers" DeSantis, will somehow lead to BETTER foreign policy? To LESS racism? Do you really, truly believe that either of them will be LESS inclined to take the side of the settler-colonialist apartheid state that pays our local corporate overlords out the nose for weapons to crush the resistance of brown people? Really? Because if you do I have a fucking bridge to sell you. Or do you just want to suffer and punish your own neighbors as "repentance" for what our government has always been like? If so, how the FUCK do you think it's going to help?

Please don't fall for these traps just because it FEELS like helping. It's not.

Friday, July 28th: Breathing lessons

A theme lately for me has been if you can learn to control your breathing you can learn to control your life. 

And I’m someone who...like...breathes, obviously, but doesn’t super enjoy it, if that makes any sense. I hate being told how to breathe, when to breathe, or that I’m breathing wrong. 

How can a person be breathing wrong? I’m fucking alive, aren’t I? 

That was my attitude for a lot of things breathing-related growing up. It comes up quite a bit more than you’d think. 

There’s the controlling anger and anxiety, slow inhales:

“Don’t tell me to take a deep breath to calm down, you take a fucking deep breath to calm down. I’m upset, oxygen doesn’t fix that, you condescending carbon-emitter. I know everything there is to know about oxygen. How dare you make this about my lungs, my feelings are valid.”

There’s the singing-from-the-diaphragm-breathing from choir all those years:

“Why do I need to fill up my stomach? My lungs are in my chest. Also I don’t think I’m doing this right. I feel like I’m just pushing my stomach out. This is actually weird and uncomfortable when you aren’t working out.”

There’s the relaxed, nose-and-mouth breathing during work outs

“Holy shit, I can’t breath. Stitch in my side. Muscles are pissed. Ow-ow. STOP TELLING ME TO BREATHE I”M FUCKING TRYING THE AIR IS JUST BEING AN ASSHOLE RIGHT NOW. Ugh, what adult pants like a dog? This is fucked. *gasp* up.”

And finally, the focus-on-your-breaths during meditation breathing: 

“My nose feels itchy. This is boring. Okay, act like it’s your first breath ever. Nope. Still boring.”

But with running, all you’ve got is your breathing. And the major lesson I’ve learned is you’ve got to relax, sending inhales to your screaming calves and exhaling tension that adds to your resistance. Go slow even though it’s cardio. It’s a lesson in not being so fucking stubborn, just breathe in to it. Let it be on your side.

Breathe. 

Other things that happened today:

Woke up at 7 am, morning routine, wrote standup, and did early-morning yoga for the first time. Walked to grab a vanilla latte and interviewed with MSL at 11 am. Paid the electric bill. 

Meditated on the middle ground of focus and relaxation, letting them inform each other. Then I went on a 22 minute run using the Nike Running App and listening to Taylor Swift’s Reputation album. (Hate that I fucking love that music). As with most of my runs, I ended up at the beach where I again stuck my lower body in the warm, mint-green ocean and watched the waves roll in from the pier. 

On the way back I was inspired to write a letter in the form of an advice piece: A manic-depressive’s guide to forming a running habit. I even got to meet the neighbor who owns the boxer I always see in the window on my way back from the park. His name is Micky. The dog, that is, I forgot the dude’s name. 

Priorities. 

Put last night’s burger in the oven and now at 3 pm, I’m where I started being productive yesterday. Definitely an improvement and kind of wild how quickly the day flew by. I feel like I entered, “flow-state”, where work and focus feel good. I didn’t realize how much I missed it. 

Oh- and in world-wide news:

The United States Military still has a long way to go in the fight for justice for sexual assault survivors, but policy and practices are finally headed in the right direction. Commanders directly up the chain of command shouldn’t have total authority...duh?

As the world endures its hottest July ever recorded, conservative groups have already drafted a plan to gut any federal efforts to address climate change. Super tired of people saying both parties are too extreme. 

Rep. Tim Scott (R-SC), the only Black GOP presidential candidate in the field, publicly criticized Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) for his support of Florida education standards requiring that students be instructed that slaves “developed skills” among other “benefits” of slavery. Because FUCK RON DeSantis and FUCK Florida.

It is truly the funniest bullshit to watch the right-wing media sphere decide that the villain of the week is Disney. DeSantis getting rid of their independent statehood in Florida to “own the libs” is high comedy.

Do it, gator boy, fucking do it. I hate The Mouse so fucking much. It is a real the enemy of my enemy moment but this one time I hope they succeed in fucking up the Rodent’s bag. It’s time. Wish it was with less homophobia but you can’t win them all I guess.
