Kudaai Thoughts™ with a side portion of Claunek

Okay, okay, I swear I'm working on other fics right now, I have a NariLamb one coming shortly, I just need to finish typing it up in docs.

But Kudaai brainrot is strong and without access to discord to blab and blab about him I needed someway to purge myself of these thoughts.

So I wrote these out in a fervor on one of my breaks at work. Its messy, but it is what it is.

First off, we don't know for sure what they are, but I have two possibilities that I like, may end up even combining them together. I like to think that these two are some type of dragon morph, preferably crocodile or alligator, with their "cloaks" being scales or feathers. Another idea is that the "cloaks" are leaves, and they're both some type of nature creatures. The idea of them being a dragon morph with leaf scales that change with the season is such a cool idea to me. Claunek gains pink highlights in the spring while Kudaai gains more orange and red. In winter they both turn white, with light layers of frost settling over them. Inside me there are two wolves-

I do also believe these two are gods within their own right. Haro explains that the lands of the Old Faith once had many gods, hundreds even, and that many of them are gone now. Some were killed, others left, others still slept. It wouldn't surprise me if under their hoods, these guys have their own little crowns. The Bishops are aware of their existence but they have an agreement, Claunek and Kudaai are allowed to live on their land so long as they don't try to amass any followers or grab power from them. This works fine for the two of them as they care not for such things as worshippers, they just want to focus on their craft.

Kudaai, I see being a God of Flame, the first fire being the one lighting his forge and is unable to burn out, seeing as he mentions it being an eternal flame in his dialogue. As well as this he is known as a god of blacksmithing - think Hephaestus from Greek Myth. Not only do mortal blacksmiths follow his practices for forging, but followers of all kinds pray to him for blessings on things. This can include anything from horseshoes so a follower's mount stays sturdy and strong for a long journey to blessings on tools and building materials for homes so that they can weather any storm and have protection from intruders.

Claunek I see as a God of Prophecy, moreso than Shamura. Shamura can see visions of the future, but they can only see so many before they feel drained, and they arent able to choose what they see. Claunek on the otherhand, can choose. Where Shamura is more spontanious, Claunek is more like Garnet from Steven Universe. He can see the different branching pathways an individuals furture can take, from most likely to happen to least likely to happen. He can then use this knowledge to influence them towards a more desired outcome, but anything is still possible as the future is never set in stone. His tarot cards are tied to this ability, and however he wants to answer your questions or influence you, it effects which cards he pulls during readings. This is to say that no matter how many times you shuffle his deck, take or remove cards, etc, if he has a specific path he wants to push you towards, the appropriate card will manifest within the deck for him to pull. As for if he has a second domain to rule over the way the other gods in the game do, I have been entertaining the idea that he has some control over hope. It makes sense to me, considering he can see other's futures, being able to sense what they hope and wish for would be incredibly helpful.

I do see them both as brothers, the same way all the Bishops are related to one another. Whether they were born from another god's death, or simply manifested, they came into the world knowing who the other was and calling them brother. I do think Kudaai came first and acts as an older brother. He's protective over Claunek, and has sacrificed a lot to keep his younger sibling safe from the dangers of their world. He is covered in scars from past battles, and a couple of the weapons stuck in his back are results of said battles. They cause him chronic pain and Claunek feels guilty whenever he thinks to much about how they got there. He often makes tea blends and medicines from herbs in the forests to help ease his brother's issues. I do enjoy the dynamic of them having a sibling rivalry, however I actually see Claunek as the more competitive one.

Specifically, he's the more competitive one in a passive aggressive/subtle way. Kudaai stops by with a wonderful new tea blend he wanted to gift his brother? Oh well, Claunek also got him some new rare ingots and high quality leather for his next weapon project, clearly he is better at gift giving. And he has better snacks to choose from, and is superior at games of wit. Kudaai just kinda sits to the side like; "Cool. Anyway…"

I honestly see his personality being more in line with like, a knight? He's very reserved and calm, patience coming just as easily to him as his younger brother due to the nature of his craft. He handles things the way he handles forging, careful strikes and patience, waiting for the right moment to make his move. This doesn't carry over to social situations, however. As a young God growing in such a dangerous land, with a delicate charge of his baby brother relying on him, Kudaai didn't have much time for socializing. If he needed to talk to others, for whatever reason, his words were always few and clipped. He never shared more than he needed to, the sword lodged in his right shoulder was a very potent lesson in keeping his thoughts and secrets close.

This is one of the reasons Claunek tries to stay loose and carefree, as well as try to engage his sibling in a healthy sibling rivalry. He hates to think that Kudaai never got to express himself or have friends or live life in any way because he was too busy taking care of his baby brother and protecting him from danger. Claunek likes to think that someday he'll be able to help his older sibling break out of his emotional imprisonment and be happy.

Thing is, Kudaai is happy. Or at least, he thinks he is. He's a bit of a minimalist, and doesn't have much desire for material things or the company of others. His younger brother is safe and happy, he gets to work on his forge as often as he wants…what more could he need?

I do have many, many, many more thoughts about these two jumping around, but I can't get them all out as of right now. Probably will write more about them soon.

You could see from the corner of your eye that Silco did not appreciate the way Finn practically oggled your form.

His eye narrowed into a dangerous glare, twitching occassionally as Finn’s hand caressed the exposed skin of your thigh through the slit of your dress. His chest rose and fell deeply as he seethed silently from the couch, tapping his cigar rythmically against the wooden lining. You could see that Silco was using all his resolve to stay focused, and continue on with the facade. He was so close to getting all of the Chamberon’s cooperation, one slip up now would mean that he loses all their votes for peace with Piltover.

So, for now, you let Finn stare. You let him caress your thigh as he practically drooled over your delicate skin. You smirked, lifting your exposed leg slightly to make yourself more comfortable. “So, do we have your vote?” You asked slyly, staring down at the man before you with an innocent smile. With a clench of his golden jaw, Finn chuckled darkly. “You can have whatever you want from me...” He drawled slowly, examining every inch of your leg greedily “as long as I get to see you like this more often.”

The growl that Silco emitted from the other side of the room was loud enough to make your gaze snap towards him, your eyes widening in bewilderment. Finn grinned victoriously, finally placing his hand on your thigh as he turned to look over his shoulder. “I didn’t think you were the possessive type…” He spoke lowly, his hand travelling further and further, till his fingers grazed the skin above your thigh. You shivered, an immense feeling of disgust forming in your stomach. You closed your eyes, swallowing the bile in your throat to prevent yourself from throwing up.

You heard the rustling of clothes from the other side of the room, causing you to open your eyes briefly and watch as Silco slowly sauntered over from the couch to your side. Though he appeared calm and reserved, you knew him better. His shoulders were tense, his chest rising and falling deeper than before. His left hand, the one closest to you, was balled into a tight fist. Without warning, Silco lurched forward, tossing his cigar onto the ground as he wrapped his hands around Finn’s neck. Hauling his sorry ass from the chair, Silco dragged Finn across the room, and shoved him into the wall, relentlessly landing punch after punch into Finn’s abdomen.

You weren’t going to stop him, that sick feeling I. Your stomach grew the more you thought about Finn’s hands on your form. The sound of crunching bone and the splatter of blood on the hardwood floor caused your already uneasy stomach to churn. You shouldn’t have looked, that way, you wouldn’t have seen Finn’s unconscious and broken body lying face down. Unmoving. Barely breathing.

You watched on in stunned silence as Silco released a long sigh, his shoulders slumping as his enitre form relaxed. He turned to face you, his expression dark as he casually wiped his bloody hands onto his waistcoat. You couldn’t move as the man before you stalked forward, your heart skipping a beat as he forcefully parted your legs and moved to stand in-between them. He hooked his index finger under your chin, forcing you to look up into his now lustful gaze. He peered down at you with a dangerous smirk, gently ghosting the skin of your chin with his thumb. “You did well...” He spoke lowly, his eyes skimming over your face and taking in every detail, your dimples, the helplessness in your eyes. Without warning, Silco jerked your head upward, causing a small pained whimper to leave your lips as his head dipped towards your ear.

You shivered, goosebumps running down your form as you could practically feel Silco smirk against your skin. He chuckled evilly, his lips ghosting the shell of your ear as he growled “...but from now on, I am the only one permitted to touch you like that. Do you understand?”

All you could do was whimper a pathetic sigh as Silco parted your legs further, his other hand harshly gripping your thigh. Seemingly pleased with your reaction, he moved his hand further up your thigh, slipping under the fabric of your dress, the sensation causing you to gasp loudly.

“Do you understand?” Silco growled darkly, his grip on your chin tightening. Nodding as much as you could, you felt your core tighten, just from the thought of his hand reaching your-

It frustrates me that people pretend weren't Taylor and Karlie weren't also exploited and abused as children in their Entertainment Industry simply because there's no rumors that suggests that they went through the same level of severe trauma their peers like Selena and Justin did.

It's like people don't care that the environment they entered at 13 is inherently, heinously exploitative and abusive, they just hear that neither Taylor and Karlie were passed around to tons of adults in the Entertainment Industries to sexually abused the same way Selena and Justin were and they decide that being raised in an environment where people would be relatively open about sexually abusing children wasn't traumatic for a young Taylor and Karlie at all.

People pretend that Taylor and Karlie grew up to be normal people with working class values when they can't be anything like us, not with Taylor being raised in an environment where types of modern slavery like debt bondage are still practiced with record label contracts, and Karlie being raised in an environment where escaping sexual abuse and coercion into sex work under threat is nearly impossible even with connections.

It makes me mad, it makes me wish people who've never personally worked in the Entertainment Industries would shut the fuck up about Taylor and Karlie, permanently. People who don't understand that they've both went through hell and have been trying to do their best dealing with the effects of things they've done to prevent furture abuse from being inflicted on them for the last few years don't deserve to have an opinion on either Taylor or Karlie.

Fucking pricks, if Taylor bearded with a piece of shit like Jerk to prevent tons of men from sexually assaulting her, people would be sympathetic, but Karlie bearding with Jerk to prevent tons of men from sexually assault her has people screaming that she should choke because that bearding relationship was used as leverage against her and Taylor... No wonder Taylor quit Tumblr, she probably hates most of her "fans" because they're disgusting pieces of shit that pretend their creepy one-sided parasocial relationship with her means they have the right to badmouth Karlie, one of the few people on the planet that makes the world feel less violently loud and unbearable for Taylor.

It's not that I disagree with you, okay? Bc I don't. But people who had a normal childhood and teenage years struggle deeply to see all the things you have written. The girls haven't admitted to any of this happening in their lives, so people think "oh, they were so lucky! Thank God" it doesn't go through their heads that, yes, they may have been through tough situations in the industry, bc even if they had strong families and a great support system, I don't think they had protection 24/7. It's impossible to be shielded all the time. I do think dating JK has protected Karlie immensely when she was younger, bc men tend to respect other men, no matter how disgusting it sounds. I truly believe the Karlie and Taylor are doing what's best for themselves. It might include some things I think I'd never do in my life? Yes, but I'm not in their shoes; I didn't grow up in the same environment they did. I don't know what's like to live the way they do or what leads them to make the decisions they make, so I don't judge. How could I? I just stay here, praying that they're safe and happy on the other side.

Translation masterclass: “Bundling”

It’s been a year since I’ve translated a book, but once a translator always a translator, I guess, so I cannot go around consuming media without paying attention to and commenting on how it is translated from one language to another. And right now what really caught my attention is how the different Hungarian adaptations of A Discovery of Witches handled “bundling.”

Bundling as a concept--the tradition where a young, courting couple spends the night together, in bed, bundled in blankets, talking--is an important theme within the adow fandom. It’s a romantic buzzword/buzz concept (is that even a thing?), like coffee for Castle, “I know” for Star Wars, battleship for AoS/skyeward, etc. It’s also something that doesn’t exist on a conceptual level in my native language (Hungarian).

This is something that is called a realia in the translation world--a concept in the source language for which a word doesn’t exist in the target language. Like there’s no word for saudade or Schadenfreude in English, so the original forms are tended to be used (fun fact: there’s a Hungarian word for Schadenfreude--káröröm).

Now, when you are translating a piece of fiction, realias are usually handled by using explanations: you might keep the original word and then add an explanation, or leave out the original word and only keep the explanations (btw, there are a bunch of times when you have to add to the original text during the process of translation. E.g. Hungarian uses two different, a formal and an informal, registers when we talk to each other. Two adult people are most likely to start out with using the formal register, then switch at some point when their relationship becomes friendlier. When this happens in fiction, the translator might add sentence or two to the original text to have the two characters agree to switch to the informal register--socially speaking, there needs to be an agreement, and there are rules how this agreement can happen. But that’s for another post.)

But turning back to adow: “bundling” is handled, both in the Hungarian translation of the novel, and the Hungarian dubbing of the series, by explanation. Which makes it... really awkward.

So the original text in the novel goes: “What does the distinguished historian know about bundling?”

Switched back to English, the Hungarian text says: “What does the distinguished historian know about the courting tradition, where the boy and the girl lie, dressed up, in bed for the whole night?”

It does the job, but it’s incredibly akwkward, and not at all romantic. It reads more like a lecture than flirting.

(Bundling comes up in book 2, too, for a short mention, when Diana is fed up with Matthew’s unwillingness to have proper sex with her. In this case, the Hungarian text--this time done by a different translator--goes on saying that Diana has had enough of the “fully clothed bedroom scenes,” which is kinda... strange, and if I didn’t know she is referring back to bundling, I’d completely lost to what she is trying to say.)

The series doesn’t fare much better. The English text is the same here, the line lifted from the book without any change. The Hungarian text, however, goes: “And what would the historian say if we lay in bed, dressed up, next to each other?”

Even more awkward, but I’m willing to be a bit lenient here for one reason: because this text is actually said, the translator had to limit themselves syllable-wise. You can’t have the character say 15 syllable when the actor’s mouth only moves for 10.

However, because of this exact reason, the dubbing easily supasses the written translation at the end of this very scene. After this flirting, and after some, eh, rolling around in bed, to following exchange happens between the two characters:

“Matthew,” I breathed, “I don’t think that’s bundling.”

“it is in France.”

Now, this is how this bit of dialogue goes on in the Hungarian version of the novel:

“Matthew,” I whispered, “I don’t think this is how the boy and the girl usually lie next to each other, all dressed up, in bed.”

“We are in France now.”

Once again, akward and not at all flirty. But, thankfully, the Hungarian dubbing of the series takes another route: to stay withing the confines of the given syllable amount, the translator here rewrote the dialogue a bit, so it goes like this:

“The Amish would disapprove.” “But the French wouldn’t.”

The actual meaning is the same: a cultural transgression has happened when they engaged in sexual behavior under the pretense of a non-sexual tradition (so the Amish, one of the groups who has practiced this tradition, would disapprove of their behavior), but it’s okay, because they’re in France, where the rules are different. It’s short, it’s witty, it’s flirty--it’s perfect, IMHO.

Now, finally, just a note on what I would have done if I had translated this book: I would have went with a third option: coining. I would have come up with a new, Hungarian term for the word “bundling” (”bugyolálás” sounds like a nice choice, it has the same meaning as “bundling” in the verb sense, and even the form is similiar), then I would have used that--so in my version Matthew would have asked Diana what she know about “bugyolálás,” then, in the following line of narration I would have had Diana give the reader a short explanation of what the word/tradition actually means. Then whenever the concept comes up in the furture, I would have just used my substitute for the word “bundling.” This way the dialogue remains crisp, witty, fast-paced, and flirty, the pace of the narration is only broken for a very short time, and I have a term to fall back onto when the concept comes back again.

I’m kinda mad the actual translator didn’t think of this.

Henry had been the one to take Williams early blueprints (which had been altered and modified to Henry's liking and equipped with the latest technology he could get ahold of) of the funtimes after locking him behind a false wall and made Ballora's main theme be the song William created for Alise out of spite.
