As we advance further & further into the Reconstruction Era of the Boiling Isles, there is one important thing we must also reconstruct along with our everyday lives - our history.
50 years of Emperor Belos’ reign has come to an end along with the Coven System, through those 50 years we have seen an unfortunate cutback of funding for historians, schooling, and other educational opportunities & institutions. Not only have we seen heavy budget restricts throughout these 5 decades, but heavy restrictions on knowledge in general.
Using one of the most simplest ways to convey information quickly, we wish to provide insight of the lost history, culture, & magic of the Boiling Isles.
Now, 50 years doesn’t sound like much but do not be fooled, dear reader. For the damage done goes back further than Emperor Belos’ reign - centuries possibly. Therefore, we have a lot of work on our hands!
Join us readers, and you will see our progress in restoring forgotten history as we bring it back to the people. From analysis, theories, artifacts & more - the Boiling Isles Historical Restoration Movement awaits you!
Tumblr media
“What else can I find here?”
Fear not, reader! We have plenty to offer! While our main focus is on the Boiling Isles Historical Restoration Movement (BIHRM), we’re also looking forward to the future of the Isles!
The efforts of rebuilding the Isles has gone at a steady pace, even better than expected since we started 4 years ago! An impressive feat, we will be doing monthly interviews with the many, many people at the centre of the Reconstruction Era! Getting a glimpse into what they think & plan, and the current progress of providing a Boiling Isles that will be free and safe for all!
Our team of young journalists known as the Bonesborough Library Junior Journalist Division go all over the Isles covering stories & topics important to today’s readers! They provide us with little snippets of local news and are always looking for more members!
Interested in learning more magic? With the abolishment of the Coven System, we have entered a new age of magic! Affectionately called, “The Free Period,” now is our time to relearn magic & experiment! We know some readers may be afraid of this new change, but fear not! We are working to educate and stop the stigma of covenless & wild magic alike! The times are changing, are you willing to change?

Moon Girl is just MAGIC
I'll be honest with you, I've never actually read the Moon Girl comics. I think at the point it came out, I just was not into Marvel. Either I was more concerned with the MCU, or with what DC Comics was doing at the moment.
However? I was surprised to find out she had a show coming out this year. Knowing that iconic actor Laurence Fishburne was behind it piqued my interest. After watching the first few episodes, I was hooked.
So today, I'll be reviewing Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Welcome to House of Milesverse, and I hope you enjoy reading this. Let's start from the top.
What makes 'Moon Girl' worth it?
youtube
The basics;
Moon Girl is different from your usual superhero formula, but it is also similar. The series stars 13-year-old Lunella Lafayette (Diamond White), who one day conducts an experiment that creates a portal. From that portal comes Devil Dinosaur (Fred Tatasciore), a large dog-like creature who quickly becomes Lunella's best friend. The two of them fight crime in the Lower-east-side of New York as Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur!
The show does not lean one way or another when it comes to silliness or seriousness. There are many episodes that include comedic jokes and antics. However, those episodes are also filled with deep morals and lessons. In a way, it creates a balanced series that does not hinder itself by feeling the need to push in more jokes.
I think this neutrality also works when the episode does do serious topics. The two-parter finale was such a quick change of pace that I loved it. You get the idea that things really might be in danger at this point, and it's filled with so many surprising twists.
Many of the episodes also deal with Lunella's growth as a character. She is fully realized and she comes with her own flaws. We get an episode where she feels like she's wasting too much time. Her method of dealing with this is creating a skip button to wind past moments with her family. She quickly realizes that the skip button is ruining her life, and decides to destroy it.
There are plenty of episodes in the series where Moon Girl learns an important lesson. I think what I like most is that it definitely fits with that age, and you can see her take those lessons in stride.
There's more to Moon Girl
There's more to Moon Girl than just the hero, by the way. She has a cast of other characters helping her either directly or indirectly. In addition, Lunella does not tackle every problem by herself.
Her best friend is Casey Calderon (Libe Barer), a young girl of mixed Jewish and Puerto-Rican ancestry. She's something of a fashionista, but she also tries her best to help. Casey works as Lunella's confidant, and also her manager.
Her other best friend - and just as important as Lunella herself, is Devil Dinosaur. He's a large Tyrannosaurus Rex that eats and smashes everything in his way. In spite of his fearsome look, Devil's actually a cute and well-meaning pet.
You also have Lunella's family, including her caring mother Adria Lafayette (Sasheer Zamata), and her bumbling father, James Lafayette (Jermaine Fowler). You have her wise grandfather 'Pops' (Gary Anthony Williams), who is also the proprietor of the family's skating business. You have her grandmother 'Mimi' (Alfre Woodard), who, spoiler alert, actually was the ORIGINAL Moon Girl. She knows that Lunella's taken the name and become a superhero as well.
You have all these characters who all add so much to Lunella's character. You can really feel the love whenever they interact with her. Of course, one major character is very different from the rest. Heck, he's only had two episodes to show how prominent he is.
You're right, it's time for us to talk about...
The Beyonder (BEYOND all things?)
Tumblr media
The Beyonder (Laurence Fishburne) is an omnipotent threat sent to analyze the worth of Humanity. He decides to partner up with Lunella since she's the smartest person on the planet.
You quickly get the feeling that Beyonder is really beyond this world. He's such an alien entity that he's unlike anything Lunella has faced or ever will face. In a way, The Beyonder works as a perfect foil to Lunella because of this.
Beyonder was only active in two episodes, but you feel his presence elsewhere. Throughout the series, he serves as an omnipresent narrator for the audience. He provides us with information on many of Lunella's villains.
When he does finally show up, it's a huge impact on the audience. His first episode focused on him forcing Lunella to work with her friend, Eduardo. Eduardo (voiced by Michael Cimino) is loud, loves music, and is generally annoying. Beyonder ultimately leaves them alone when Lunella proves that she can work with him.
In another episode, The Beyonder forces Lunella to confront her fears. She's forced to go to Coney Island and rescue Mimi, her grandmother. Ultimately with Devil Dinosaur's help, Lunella conquers the test and once more impresses Beyonder.
In the comics, Beyonder is a traditional enemy of the Avengers. However, I think making him a threat to Moon Girl works well. Laurence Fishburne gives him such a flamboyant and charismatic tone that it just works.
Also? He has a good theme song.
The show tackles important lessons in diversity
Let's talk about the fifth episode, Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow. In this episode, Lunella Lafayette becomes self-conscious about taking care of her hair. She tries to create a solution to strengthen her hair, but it falls out. Because of this, her hair becomes a sentient monster named Mane that wants to use the solution to create an army of hair monster
Eventually, Lunella comes clean to her family about her insecurities regarding her hair. Mimi and Adria help her through it, while also telling her that she needs a neutralizer. Both Mimi and Adria help by recounting their experiences with trying to straighten their hair.
This is what culminates in her defeating Mane. It is not done through combat but through friendship. All Mane wanted was to feel loved, and just like Adria said; "To love your hair is to love yourself". It sends an important message about how we should love our hair and take care of it.
Hair in particular can be an important part of your appearance. We oftentimes forget about the things we have because we want something else. Lunella wanted straight hair over her natural curls. By the end of the episode, she began to love her natural hair for what it was. I believe this episode is such a foundational confidence-building idea for young black girls.
The eleventh episode is just as important, and it is called Like Mother, Like Moon Girl. The episode's focus is on themes like gentrification, and using her voice. It's an impressive topic for a kiddy superhero TV series.
The episode focuses on Lunella being made community captain by one of the council presidents, Pena. Pena also hires two inventors, a husband-and-wife duo known as the Muzzlers. Although they appear nice, the Muzzlers seek to improve the Lower East Side by any means. This involves them trying to change the LES, at the vehement objections of the community.
The Muzzlers use their talents to erase the community's culture and soul. They replace it with a dull, technological city without its voice. At first, Moon Girl is rejected by the community who blame her for erasing the LES' identity.
However, after a conversation with her mother, Adria, she finds strength. She and the community rally together to stop the Muzzlers and their noise-canceling devices. They win and manage to defeat the Muzzlers.
Both of these episodes talk about serious topics, especially relating to black people. I believe that these two best represents the series' style and personality. These episodes really showcase the best in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
Moon Girl's soundtrack is awesome
Beyond the series' storytelling and characters is its soundtrack. The songs match the fast-paced action scenes that they are supposed to represent. They are also just very fun to listen to as well.
Heck, the fight scenes in general are also a spectacle to look at. We really see Moon Girl put her tools to use. Her jetpack, her skates, and her wings are all excellent additions.
youtube
This battle right here is one of my favorites to use. Although, it does not involve Lunella fighting back until later. The main point of the battle was to make 'Gravitas' run out of energy and leave him open. It really sells Lunella's strategical mindset, set to Childish Gambino's Sweatpants.
In combat, Devil Dinosaur can be seen as a hindrance, but that's not the truth. Although he is always cumbersome, he can be pretty useful. Lunella and Devil work well together, and their cooperation is often what results in their enemy's defeat.
Lastly, there's the main theme, 'Moon Girl Magic' performed by Diamond White. It is a flashy pop tune that just fills you with confidence. I think it's one of the best-animated openings of recent.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is a masterpiece
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is a show that is very unafraid to be what it is. It's a Marvel series based off of a lesser-known Marvel character. It has a beautifully animated New York, a diverse cast, and well-meaning morals.
I love how upbeat and aspirational the series can be. What I also enjoy is how the creator, Laurence Fishburne, made it because of his love for comics. I think it's wonderful seeing how comics have impacted places and people. I wish there was more of that representation in the world.
I recommend that just like Devil Dinosaur you take a bite at the series. So far it might be one of the better animated series of the 2020s. The good news is that it is only going to get better from here.
Thank you for reading this review of the series, I hope you enjoyed it. My next series? We could say that it is going to be transformational for you, me, and the new fans out there.
Tumblr media
That's right, we're taking it to the Terrans on this one. I will do my review of the recently-finished Transformers Earthspark series. As the Transformers maniac that I am, I know it's going to get crazy.

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" Breaks Protocol with LGBTQ Representation
Tumblr media
On October 14, the season two finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks aired on Paramount+, and while the show is lauded by some for "breaking new ground" as a sci-fi comedy and mature adult animation, often reviewers don't talk about the LGBTQ representation at the heart of the show itself.
Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the eighth article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on October 20, 2021. In the original version of this article I made an error about the bisexuality of Mariner, and unknowingly said some biphobic stuff about Mariner, which I had not intended. I corrected it not long after I heard those comments and worked to make sure that wouldn't happen again. Strangely enough, this article flew through the editors at The Geekiary with no comment on this, showing that the issues with articles are my own and the editors aren't there, all the time, to help me.
Star Trek: Lower Decks, which premiered on the streaming platform CBS All Access (later renamed Paramount+) in August 2020, is the first animated series in the Star Trek franchise since Star Trek: The Animated Series which aired on NBC from 1973-1974. It has been nominated for three Critics' Choice Super Awards and one Emmy Award for voice acting, animation, and sound editing. The series focuses on officers of a low rank who engage in menial work,, rather than senior officers or captains, who are supporting characters.
The series has four main characters: ensigns Beckett Mariner (voiced by Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (voiced by Jack Quaid), D'Vana Tendi (voiced by Noël Wells), and Sam Rutherford (voiced by Eugene Cordero). Supporting characters include Carol Freeman (voiced by Dawnn Lewis), captain of the Cerritos, Mariner's mother, First Officer Jack Ransom (voiced by Jerry O'Connell), Tactical Officer Shaxs (voiced by Fred Tatasciore), and head medical doctor T'Ana (voiced by Gillian Vigman).
Mike McMahan, the creator of Solar Opposites and writer and producer of Rick and Morty, is the series creator and showrunner, while music is composed by Chris Westlake and Titmouse, Inc. does the series animation. Both series include LGBTQ characters, specifically the genderless aliens Korvo and Terry in Solar Opposites. Sleepy Gary and Jerry Smith on Rick and Morty are queer, with Gary as bisexual and Smith as bisexual or pansexual as noted in recent episodes.
The ten-episode first season of the series involves wild adventures from fighting a virus infection and terraforming agent on the ship, to ship salvaging, a surprise party, and a family secret, that Freeman is Mariner's mother. The second season ups the ante, with godlike possession of a crew member, a dangerous mission with a "collector," a mission to retrieve a "special item" for T'Ana, a scammer, and a race of beings which duplicate when they get scared. Other episodes focus on the lower deckers cleaning up unpredictable anomalies from previous missions, a malevolent computer A.I., drills for the crew which they are designed to fail, a 12-hour-time warp, and a risky first contact mission.
Through all of this, Mariner's queerness is emphasized. In the show's first season, Captain Amina Ramsey (voiced by Toks Olagundoye) is shown as being chummy with Mariner in the episode "Much Ado About Boimler," and in the episode "No Small Parts" it was shown that she previously dated Steve Levy, a Lieutenant. She also stated in the episode "Envoys" that she once dated a humanoid and female-presenting Anabaj to anger her mother. In an October 2020 interview, McMahan confirmed that Ramsey was Mariner's ex-girlfriend at Starfleet Academy, and stated that "every Starfleet officer is probably at the baseline[,] bisexual" and hinted that this would be expanded in the show's second season. This meant that by the end of the show's first season, it was implied that Mariner is bisexual.
However, the Season 2 episode "We'll Always Have Tom Paris" blew it out of the water. At one point, Mariner tells Tendi she is "always dating bad boys, bad girls, bad gender non-binary babes, ruthless alien masterminds, [and] bad bynars." As such, this implied she is pansexual, as some reviewers noted. Furthermore, in the show's season two finale, Mariner admitted she liked a female-presenting alien, Jennifer Sh’reyan (voiced by Lauren Lapkus), after Sh’reyan saved her from dying in the void of space, as Mariner's walls began to come down. This led some fans to speculate the two may be shown as a couple in the upcoming third season.
Tumblr media
Mariner tells Tendi about the people she has dated in the past, hinting at her possible pansexuality
There appear to be other LGBTQ characters in Star Trek: Lower Decks as well, their identities arguably implied. For one, Andarithio "Andy" Billups (voiced by Paul Scheer), the chief engineer aboard the Cerritos and prince of Hysperia, is implied, arguably, to be asexual. In one episode, "Where Pleasant Fountains Lie", he has no interest in having sex with either the male guard nor the female guard. In another, in the simulated drill called "Naked Time," where all the crew are naked, either kissing one another or engaging in foreplay, which scars poor Mariner, he is not participating in any sexual acts. The funny part about the latter drill is that apparently all of them could see this drill happening with their eyes. Now, that would have been an interesting scene, even though many of them might have been scarred by life if they saw it.
In an interview this month, Quaid has said that Boimler could be queer, stating that he would "not rule it out," and adding that in the Star Trek universe, it is an "aspirational future and sexuality is a spectrum." That has been shown to be the case with queer characters - for instance, Hikaru Sulu, a gay man in various Star Trek films, while Hugh Culber, who is in a relationship with Paul Stamets in Star Trek: Discovery. The latter series also features Gray Tal, a trans man. Kira Nerys, from the mirror universe, in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is bisexual and in a relationship with a woman, Ezri Tigan. This is not to be confused with the Kira Nerys in the main universe, who did not have such relationships and had a different sexual orientation. Tigan, on the other hand, also flirts with women other than Nerys from the mirror universe. In the same series, Dax is a symbiont who became an icon for trans people who changes genders. In Star Trek: Picard, Raffi Muskier is the romantic partner of Seven of Nine.
It is likely that Sh’reyan, an Andorian woman, will have more of a recurring role in the show's next season. This can be extrapolated from McMahan's recent interview with SYFY where he talks about how the arc with Sh’reyan started with an ad-lib from Tawny Newsome, with Sh’reyan pushed aside in the episode "Cupid's Errant Arrow." Apart from the interaction between Mariner and Sh’reyan in the Season Two finale and both crossing paths briefly across many episodes, Sh’reyan is coded as liking women. She is shown kissing Barnes, an ensign, in the "Naked Time" simulation, is talking with an officer, Castro, in the episode "wej Duj."
Many shipping fan fictions for Mariner are more skewed toward men, like Boimler and Ransom, and less so toward anyone else, with those fan fictions shipping Mariner with Boimler, a ship dubbed "Marinler" by fans which is popular on AO3 and Tumblr. These fan fictions are just as valid as those shipping her with women like Tendi, or those which describe Mariner as in polyamorous relationships, to give two examples. Marinler fans see Mariner and Boimler as more than friends and buds. Rather they see Mariner as Boimler as two people who are romantic toward each other. This perspective is completely understandable based on the interactions between Mariner and Boimler during the series, even if other fans, like myself, interpret the interactions between Mariner and Boimler as being more platonic. While Marinler fan fictions will undoubtedly continue to prosper and grow, even without a dedicated subreddit, in the fandom as a whole, it is possible that there will be more fan fictions which ship Mariner with non-male characters. After all, McMahan has confirmed that Mariner will be dating Jennifer in the next season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. McMahan also noted that although the show is "not about Mariner’s romantic relationships" it instead focuses on how Mariner "sees herself, and how she treats friends and colleagues more than romantic partners," in his words.
Tumblr media
Mariner admits she likes Sh’reyan in the season two finale
A third season of Star Trek: Lower Decks is already confirmed and will likely air sometime in 2022. If Mariner gets a girlfriend, like Sh’reyan, as was implied in the Season 2 finale, and is shown exploring her identity more in the season, then it would mean that series would truly be one of the best representations in mature animation for a while. It would far exceed representation embodied by the lesbian protagonist in the mature animation Final Space, named Ash Graven (voiced by Ashly Burch), for which I gave an overly optimistic (perhaps too optimistic) assessment which led to annoyance from angry Redditors at my "incorrect" assessment of the series.
Unlike Final Space, which was sadly cancelled earlier this year due to the merger of Discovery and Warner Media according to Final Space creator Olan Rogers, Star Trek: Lower Decks will continue on due to its seeming support from ViacomCBS and CBS executives. As such, the series has the ability to expand its LGBTQ representation, apart from Mariner and possibly Billups, to, hopefully, others in the main cast like Tendi, Rutherford, or Boimler, or even in the supporting cast. However, it does not seem that any of the cast members are part of the LGBTQ community, which is unfortunate.
As such, Star Trek: Lower Decks has the possibility of moving mature animation in a more inclusive direction, joining the ranks of ongoing mature animations like The Great North, Invincible, RWBY, Disenchantment, Harley Quinn, Tuca & Bertie, Bojack Horseman, and gen:LOCK, to name a few, of series with LGBTQ characters. While I remain cautiously optimistic that Star Trek: Lower Decks will do this for LGBTQ representation, I'm not holding my breath, as the season could go a different direction and focus on something else entirely.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, DC and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, and inspired by the iconic mid-1990s DC story from Jeph Loeb and the late Tim Sale, Batman: The Long Halloween – Deluxe Edition begins as atrocious serial killings on holidays in Gotham City send The World’s Greatest Detective into action – confronting both organized crime and a unified front of classic DC Super-Villains – while attempting to stop the mysterious murderer. Batman: The Long Halloween was originally released as a two-part film, and both films still stand at 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Jensen Ackles (Supernatural, The Boys, Batman: Under the Red Hood) leads a star-studded Batman: The Long Halloween – Deluxe Edition cast as the voice of Batman/Bruce Wayne alongside the late Naya Rivera (Glee) as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Josh Duhamel (Transformers, Jupiter’s Legacy) as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, Billy Burke (Twilight, Revolution, Zoo) as Commissioner James Gordon, Katee Sackhoff (The Mandalorian, Battlestar Galactica, Batman: Year One) as Poison Ivy, Titus Welliver (Bosch, Bosch: Legacy, Deadwood) as Carmine Falcone, Julie Nathanson (Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay) as Gilda Dent, David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad, Dune, Ant-Man) as Calendar Man & The Penguin, Troy Baker (The Last of Us, Young Justice) as The Joker, Amy Landecker (Your Honor, Transparent) as Barbara Gordon & Carla Vitti, Jack Quaid (The Boys, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Oppenheimer) as Alberto, Fred Tatasciore (American Dad!, Family Guy) as Solomon Grundy, Alyssa Diaz (The Rookie, Ray Donovan) as Renee Montoya, and Alastair Duncan (The Batman, Batman Unlimited franchise) as Alfred. In addition, Robin Atkin Downes (The Strain, Constantine: City of Demons) voices both Scarecrow & Thomas Wayne, John DiMaggio (Futurama, Disenchantment) is the Mad Hatter, Laila Berzins (Genshin Impact) is Sofia Falcone, Jim Pirri (World of Warcraft franchise) is Sal Maroni, and Zach Callison (The Goldbergs, Steven Universe) is Young Bruce Wayne. Additional voice work was provided by Gary LeRoi Gray, Rick Wasserman, Frances Callier and Greg Chun.
Chris Palmer (Superman: Man of Tomorrow) directs Batman: The Long Halloween – Deluxe Edition from a screenplay by Tim Sheridan (Reign of the Supermen). Producers are Jim Krieg (Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) and Kimberly S. Moreau (Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Butch Lukic (Justice Society: World War II, Superman: Man of Tomorrow) is Supervising Producer. Executive Producer is Michael Uslan. Sam Register is Executive Producer.
 Special Features:
- BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN – EVOLUTION OF EVIL (New Featurette) – The mystery surrounding the Holiday Killer shrouds Gotham in a sinister darkness forcing Batman to stop the villain's assault on the city.  This is a comprehensive look at The Long Halloween with original writer, Jeph Loeb, and filmmakers.
