Glacier Caravan 2023 - Legambiente's journey through the Alps during the phases of the climate crisis.
Tumblr media
The 2023 Glacier Caravan campaign through the Alps, organized by Legambiente, has officially begun.
Embark on a meaningful adventure with Legambiente Alpi with the Carovana dei Ghiacciai 2023. This journey will take you through the breathtaking Alps to observe and learn about the impact of the climate crisis stages on our planet.
Legambiente Onlus is launching the Glacier Caravan from August 20th to September 10th, 2023! They will cross the Alps with CIPRA and its Italian representative living in the Alps - CIPRA rappresentanza italiana - vivere nelle Alpi - along with the Italian Glaciological Committee - Comitato Glaciologico Italiano  - to document the dramatic retreat of glaciers caused by global warming.
This tour includes six stops between Italy, Austria, and Switzerland. It involves monitoring, hiking, art, and music to raise awareness about protecting our glaciers.
From 1997 to 2022, glaciers in Europe lost approximately 880 cubic kilometers of ice. The hardest-hit region is the Alps, where the average glacier ice thickness has reduced by 34 meters.
So let's join Legambiente Onlus on their Glacier Caravan journey through the Alps to document the devastating effects of global warming on glaciers. This tour includes monitoring, hiking, art, and music to raise awareness about protecting our glaciers. Let's take action to preserve our planet earth!
So, in the end, from the 20th of August to the 10th of September, a journey in 6 stages crosses national borders for the first time. The journey begins in Valle d'Aosta with the Rutor glacier, continues to Piedmont with the Belvedere glacier, then to Lombardy with the Dosdè glaciers, and further to Trentino-Alto Adige with the Lares and Mandrone glaciers. Eventually, the journey reaches Austria with the Ochsental Glacier and Switzerland with the Morteratsch Glacier.
And most of all, recognizing that the climate crisis is accelerating, causing devastating effects such as fires, droughts, heat waves, and record temperatures worldwide, is crucial. The Alpine glaciers are not immune to the impact of climate change and global warming. They are becoming more fragile, vulnerable, and unstable, posing an increased threat to their existence.

The Sustainability Week initiative is essentially designed to galvanise momentum around sustainability in a way that helps to supercharge implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Tumblr media
The President of the General Assembly on Tuesday announced the UN body’s inaugural Sustainability Week, encapsulating a series of high-level discussions and initiatives aimed at propelling the implementation of sustainable practices and to address pressing challenges.
To be held from 15 to 19 April, President Dennis Francis’ flagship initiative converges various mandated events into a singular, impactful week, elevating the discourse on such critical sectors as tourism, infrastructure, energy and transport.
“The Sustainability Week initiative is essentially designed to galvanise momentum around sustainability in a way that helps to supercharge implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” Mr. Francis told reporters at the UN Headquarters in New York.
He added that high-level participation is anticipated from Heads of States and Governments, sector-specific ministers and key UN officials.
Sustainability Week highlights
15 April: High-level thematic debate on debt sustainability and socioeconomic equality, highlighting the impact of surging debt on countries’ development trajectories
16 April: High-level thematic event on tourism, addressing unsustainable practices within the industry and launching a statistical framework for measuring sustainability
17 April: High-level meeting on sustainable transport, emphasising its importance in achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
18 April: Informal dialogue on building global resilience and promoting sustainable development through infrastructure connectivity
19 April: Global stock taking on sustainable energy, reflecting on progress and shortcomings over the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All 2014-2024 and launching a call to action to accelerate implementation of SDG 7 on affordable and clean energy
Assembly President Dennis Francis briefing reporters on the inaugural Sustainability Week.
Beyond the 2030 Agenda
Assembly President Francis also highlighted initiatives beyond the 2030 Agenda, including the "Choose Sustainability" campaign, which encourages stakeholders to adopt pledges and sustainability practices.
“I encourage all permanent missions, stakeholders and the media to adopt pledges to promote sustainability and to declare their support on social media while adopting sustainability practices,” he said.
For its part, his office is, among other things, working to phase out the use of roll-up banners throughout the General Assembly and to replace them with long-lasting, energy-efficient LED screens

Towards a Rights-centred Gender Transformative Economy, Including a New International Financial Architecture.
This side-event will feature a diverse and intersectional group of thought leaders and practitioners, including feminist & women's rights organizations, LGBTI+ organizations, United Nations entities and Member States & other relevant stakeholders and will explore the gendered implications of the current financial architecture and discuss how the reforms proposed by civil society, Member States, the World Bank Evolution Roadmap and the Secretary-General can be designed and expanded to accelerate progress toward the SDGs.
Lead Facilitators:
Women's Major Group, with the support of UN Women.
Established during World War II, the institutions of the international financial architecture are no longer fit to address the challenges of our time. In their current structure and operational models, they have amplified structural inequalities, jeopardized social, economic and environmental rights and led to the fragmentation of international financial and economic relations, hampering the implementation of the SDGs. Conditionalities imposed by international financial institutions and austerity policies, in particular, have constrained fiscal space and concentrated wealth at the top.
Participants will discuss and give concrete suggestions for how the resources unlocked through debt relief and these reforms should support gender-responsive fiscal and financial policies, including investments in social protection, care, health and education, and reductions in occupational, wage and other gender gaps. The event will encourage commitment by Member States and financial institutions towards an economic model for gender transformative results at all levels. ---
To maximize the SDG Summit's impact, the Secretary General is convening an SDG Action Weekend, which will generate opportunities for stakeholders, UN entities, and Member States to convene inside the United Nations Headquarters and set out specific commitments and contributions to drive SDG transformation between now and 2030.
The SDG Action Weekend will consist of the SDG Mobilization Day on Saturday, 16 September, and the SDG Acceleration Day on Sunday, 17 September at UNHQ in New York.
The SDG Mobilization Day (16 September) will create an opportunity for stakeholders from all sectors to convene inside the United Nations Headquarters and mobilize towards an ambitious SDG Summit and UN General Assembly High-Level Week.
The SDG Acceleration Day (17 September) will be centred around the UN High-Impact Initiatives
The SDG Summit on 18-19 September will mark the mid point of the SDGs. It must secure the breakthroughs and momentum needed to change course and achieve the SDGs by 2030. To maximize the Summit's impact, the Secretary General is convening an SDG Action Weekend, which will generate opportunities for stakeholders, UN entities, and Member States to convene inside the United Nations Headquarters and set out specific commitments and contributions to drive SDG transformation between now and 2030.
