always thinking about how the only times we ever see utena wear dresses is when a man wants her to, even though she's clearly very uncomfortable with it. and also how each time it happens it's more horrific than the last.

the first time is because touga sends it to her, and she wears it despite saying she hates it, presumably for the same reason she tells him she came to the party in the first place: because she thinks he might be her prince. the bright side of this time is that she's (somehow) wearing her uniform underneath it, and is able to take it off.

the second time we don't get to see where the dress comes from or hear her thoughts on it, but it's pretty clear to me that she only chose to wear it because she thought akio would want her to. her own choice, but only by a technicality, the same way she doesn't actually get to choose anything when it comes to akio. (wonder what other relevance that has in this episode. hmmm)

and the last time may be the worst of all of them because this time she is literally forced into wearing it. she doesn't even get the illusion of a choice. and worse yet, it's the rose bride dress, the very symbol of the role akio has been grooming her into for the entire show.

something i really love about utena as a character is that her gender-noncomformity is explored and questioned throughout the show, but the answer it comes to is always that she is not comfortable with femininity, and that's something about her that never changes no matter how much certain people want it to. every time utena presents more femininely (other examples being the girl's uniform in episode 12 and the earrings in episode 35) it's always framed as something bad for her, something she is forced or coerced into against her will (to varying degrees.) and the show is not saying that being feminine is bad, just that utena isn't, that being gender-noncomforming is a key part of her identity, and that trying to take that away from her is cruel and violating.

smth ive been trying to put into words is like. the feeling that a lot of progressive spaces are not prepared for or do not want gnc men who have complicated feelings and trauma related to toxic masculinity? like i see people celebrating men in dresses- which is good! but that appreciation tends to be very focused on men who are already comfortable and confident in that. people talk about how attractive men who are comfortable with being feminine and how secure their masculinity is- and good for them! but there isn't as much (or any) appreciation or support for men who feel wary about being feminine, even if they want to. because there's a tendency to demonize anything related to toxic masculinity- so a man who feels uncomfortable wearing a dress because he feels embarrassed by it is seen as Toxic and Bad, regardless of the way he has been brought up constantly being told that being feminine is embarrassing and he should never do it.

basically: it feels like a lot of people only support men who are seen as having unworked 100% of their internalized toxic masculinity, and any man who hasn't is being a Bad Person by furthering toxic masculinity- which is ridiculous. a woman who feels embarrassed or ashamed of doing unfeminine things isn't furthering misogyny, she's a victim of it. the same goes for a man who has complicated feelings around doing unmasculine things. in both cases that COULD lead them to lean in to the misogyny/toxic masculinity, but acting as though everyone either has to be 100% free from internalized gender roles or else they are Bad and Furthering the System. i think we should give more support to men who may want to act/dress more feminine but feel ashamed about it, who deal with self-hatred, who can't be the ones posting cute tiktoks looking super confident and unbothered. expecting men to be absolutely emotionally unaffected by toxic masculinity is, in fact, toxic masculinity but with a feminist coat of paint on it. not every gnc man is going to be super confident and free from any shame or internalized bias against himself, and we shouldn't expect them to.

Does anyone else have a running list of phrases/details etc. that they’ve read in fanfic that made them go, “I’m FURIOUS I didn’t write that”? Like things that you see that were so good that you had to take a lap around your living room? Little phrases that you just want to scoop up and start using in your own writing immediately??

The two I’ve been hyped about recently are,

“Bloody the altars,” used as a curse in place of like “jesuschrist” or “ohmygod” or “goddammit” in worlds with witchcraft or pantheons or whatever, but no Christianity. Like! That’s so good! It’s so hard to avoid using colloquialisms that wouldn’t make sense in a fantasy world, and this is such a good alternative! “... good sir, madame, or otherwise.” “Otherwise.” “Good otherwise...” That’s such a fun way to incorporate nonbinary/agender/gnc-inclusive language in a fantasy setting! It flows perfectly, it sounds right at home in that high-fantasy/renaissance-adjacent way of speaking. I’m obsessed. I love the idea of “Otherwise” being an honorific used as commonly as “sir” or “madame.” 10/10 incredible stuff. **(from Braided Threads by stele3 on ao3)
