A marriage of peace & political (2)
Zuko x water tribe reader x male mai + others
Tumblr media
Many years had gone by since you left your home and become a wife, it had been so long since you had seen your family and everyone else. No words or visit had taken place between them with you, at first it had broken your heart but you soon came to terms with everything. There was some distance between yourself and southern water tribe, that had grown over the years since the last time they saw you. Over the years you had changed into the person you had become now these days.
Y/n " ........" you are the on the dock of the fire nation ship moving on the ocean, you were looking out on the landscape surrounding you.
Fire nation solder " my lady y/n we are not that far from the South Pole"
Y/n " thank you for the report please make sure everything will be ready to be unloaded"
Fire nation soldier " yes my lady" it had been so long but you were finally going home, not for a home coming but for help. As some tension had risen and issue had risen for water and earth kingdom, Among themselves and some tension with the fire nation as well.
????? " mom" you soon had a smile show up on your face, as you looked to see your four sons standing there.

Hakoda " well we can find a solution later I'm happy you are home and my grandsons are here as well"
Sokka " family hug"
Uze " I don't do hugs"
Toph " hey I like this one"
Uze " your toph I heard great stuff about you from my mother and great uncle respect"
Toph " thank you"
Y/n " we can talk later and have time to get to know each other or caught up, we should get to the meeting I'm right to sokka time line"
Sokka " you still know me well sister" you had nodded your head as the meeting will be starting soon but you know during their time here it was going to challenges for you, as now you will be dealing with your family and the others. As life was not the same anymore, you were going to do you best while you were here and not let the last control that much.

Imagine having to hide your relationship with Zuko to secure his reign but him growing more and more tired not being able to announce your relationship
Tumblr media
You and Zuko had been dating for around 9 months. It all started when he came to the water tribe and Sokka introduced the two of you. Sokka claims he knew the two of you would hit it off but you both knew that was a blatant lie. For you, it was how endearingly awkward Zuko was for royalty, not to mention the armour and hair were very pleasing to the eye. For Zuko he liked how refreshing your personality was and how strong a waterbender you were. He saw you smash a drunken guy who was trying to grab you into a snow pile and knew he wanted to get to know you more. The rest was history and the two of you were very happy together.
However Zuko’s rule hadn’t been quite as easy. Many citizens were angry when he took the throne and wanted Ozai back. The upper classes in particular didn’t like Zuko’s forward-thinking policies and saw the equality he was aiming for as a loss for them rather than a gain for everyone else. Then Azula broke out of her facility and started a rebellion. She timed it perfectly and stepped right into the unrest, promptly making it worse. Zuko was already the youngest Firelord in history and also one of the most controversial. That’s why it was decided your relationship had to be a secret. As you were from the Water Tribe, Fire Nation citizens would undoubtedly see your relationship as a threat to the throne, not even taking into account how your own tribe would react. While some now liked Zuko many still didn’t trust the fire nation, so to “lose” one of their own to the Firelord himself...it could cause trouble to say the least.
The reactions of both your nations could be the thing that toppled Zuko from the throne and you wanted no part of that. So, it was agreed, until the nation stabilised and Zuko had been on the throne for a while longer you’d keep it between the two of you. Of course your close friends and family knew but other than that it was top secret.
The secret routine you developed worked rather well. The Fire Nation was big on privacy so you could sneak around fairly easily and once you were within the palace you were safe from prying eyes. For yourself, you hung around with Aang anyway so going away to the Fire Nation every month didn’t seem odd. It would have been perfect if you were just two individuals not expected to make formal public appearances but you weren’t. Zuko was the Firelord and you a prominent member of your tribe. You both had expectations on your shoulders and at formal events you were expected to be in attendance.
Zuko’s POV
The Fire Nation threw a lot of parties but apparently more were needed. It was suggested Zuko throw one to mark the anniversary of his coronation a year ago to show strength and unquestionable leadership in the face of the ever-prevalent rebellions. It made sense so Zuko agreed. The upside was he could invite all his friends and you. The downside was he couldn’t admit you were more than that. He’d have to watch all night as other people got to talk to you and more annoyingly as other men tried their luck with you. The few times you’d been here officially before, you’d had quite a bit of attention and Zuko hadn’t coped very well with that (he may or may not have fired a general he saw checking you out inappropriately). Zuko figured it would be better this time as all your tribe was coming too so you should stand out less. Still Zuko wanted to ensure there would be a barrier between any Fire Nation men and yourself, so he asked Sokka to bring you to the ball. Better a friend he trusted than some nobel likely to propose before dinner was even finished.
It wasn’t that Zuko didn’t trust you to fend off any and all proposals it was more he was worried you’d see the attraction in a straightforward relationship as opposed to your current chess level strategy based relationship. Zuko felt he was always cancelling plans due to a disaster or rearranging you to fit into his life as opposed to making time for you. He worried you’d see the non-complicated options available to you and leave him. So he tried desperately to use his power and influence to keep this from happening and luckily Sokka was game to help.
Sokka had agreed to go to the party with you and to aid the two of you in gaining some alone time. Zuko thought it was a rather brilliant plan and your entrance boosted his already high mood. You looked beautiful and always took Zuko’s breath away when he first saw you. You were wearing a formal water tribe dress that matched your bluey green eyes perfectly. Your long dark hair hung loose and it seemed to shine in the firelight. It took Zuko a few seconds to realise Sokka was beside you but when he did, it didn’t feel great. Through planning or accident the two of you were perfectly matching. You looked like a water tribe couple and Zuko’s eyes drifted from your entwined arms to the other people in the room. It seems he’d overlooked a problem. You and Sokka were of similar ages, from the same tribe, had a close relationship and looked very good beside one another. The oversight began to dawn on Zuko and panic began to blossom in his head. Would this be interpreted as more than a friendship? Zuko searched the room and sure enough others were watching the two of you. Zuko noticed members of the Water Tribe in particular staring. Many of them smiling widely and whispering to one another, no doubt expecting the two of you were finally dating. Zuko even saw several people giving Hakoda knowing smiles and whispering congratulations to him. Hakoda tried to get to stop it from being so obvious, brushing away their comments but their meaning was painfully clear, everyone thought the two of you were a couple and they were thrilled. Zuko felt his temper nipping at him and had to look away from the scene.
It wasn’t that he was possessive and wanted everyone to know you were ”his”, it was more the opposite. He wanted everyone to know you, y/n of the water tribe liked him. Zuko had never been good at the whole flirting thing and he was still amazed he’d managed to ask you out and somehow end up dating you. He was very proud of that victory and wanted everyone to know you thought he was good enough. Of all the men you could’ve dated you chose him. Zuko. But he wasn’t just Zuko, he was also the Firelord which is why the pesky secrecy was needed. His country had to come first.
Sighing Zuko disappeared behind a curtain where he knew he could hide for a while before Suki came to find him. As Firelord he could have small absences but nothing big, still he took every five-minute break when he could and he had a feeling he’d need them after tonight. He was brooding for only a few minutes when he was discovered but not by who he expected.
"Are you okay?" a voice asked and Zuko needed no time distinguishing whose it was, he’d know your voice anywhere. You must have noticed him storm away and followed, discreetly of course. You’d gotten good at sneaking around and following him into corners but now Zuko was annoyed that you had to do that. He wanted everyone to see you two together, to recognise you were one another's. "Zuko?" you asked concerned when he didn’t answer and he sighed "i’m fine". He turned to see your worried expression and felt guilty. "Are you sure?" you asked "because if not you can tell me". "I just hate this" he admitted "it’s not fair to have to act like this”. You nodded "i know it must be hard being nice to the people you know helped Azula. But don’t worry you just need a bit more influence and then you won’t have to rely on them as much...". Zuko paused at your misunderstanding. You thought Zuko meant the brewing rebellion. In this situation the rebellion was almost comical to him, he was far more concerned with losing you than his crown. "I wasn’t talking about that i meant us" he said and saw your worry grow "us?". "I know it was my idea but i don’t like Sokka attending this with you, seeing you enter with him, stay by his side while your whole tribe grins like it’s christmas....I so want to show them it’s not true, to just announce how you’re not dating Sokka but me! I’m the lucky one not him! I’m the one who you'll be leaving with not him! But i can’t" he sighed. "I’ll be leaving with you will i?" you asked trying to ease the mood but even your smile couldn’t take Zuko’s mind off his frustrations. You realised and frowned "Zuko...it’s okay". "No it’s not" he told you "it’s not fair on you". "It is" you said softly "i get you’re the Firelord Zuko i went into this with that abundantly clear" you smiled "so i get that while your rule is still precarious we have to be careful, i’d never want you to lose all this just because we were careless, i can wait as long as you need me to" you finished and patted his arm softly before heading back to Sokka so your absence wouldn’t be noted. Zuko let out the sigh he’d been holding. He knew you were perfect, your response was exactly what he should’ve wanted, it should have relaxed him hearing you say that but it didn’t. Zuko didn’t want you to have to make do. He didn’t want to sneak moments with you and hide away. He wanted everyone to know the greatest woman in the Water Tribe was dating him. He was beyond caring about the Fire Nation at this point so Zuko decided to do something about it. Tomorrow night would not be like this.
The next night
Zuko had officially been Firelord a year today but that wasn’t his proudest achievement. That was reserved for having you on his arm.
You entered the ballroom together and the event was in full swing. Zuko saw lots of people do double-takes to see you beside one another and he struggled to stop a smug smile from appearing on his face. He knew he should always act dignified but the reality was he was grinning like an idiot. Your tribesmen stared and Zuko couldn’t tell if it was because you were with him or because of what you were both wearing. For one night only you’d traded your nation’s colours which was fairly unheard of but the results were excellent in Zuko’s opinion. He wasn’t too sure about the blue on him but the traditional Fire Nation red made your dark skin so warm and inviting, the red looked so at home on you and Zuko had to keep reminding himself not to stare.
You reached the bottom of the staircase and the whole room seemed to be holding its breath. Several of your friends smiled and Zuko nodded to them all, other people jumped away from his gaze when he caught them staring. Zuko saw you looking down unsure how to act and glanced at you. "Would you like to dance?" he asked. You looked at him surprised "but you hate dancing". "I’m the Firelord i think they expect me to, plus it’s something we can get away with as a formality". You smiled and nodded “lead the way”. Zuko took your hand smiling like the happiest man in the world.
Your POV
You could see people watching you, hear them whispering and tried to ignore them and just focus on Zuko. It was hard at first but then you got caught in the enjoyment of it with Zuko and when the set ended you were disappointed. Zuko led you away from the floor and the mutters followed. People looked away as you approached but you could feel their eyes on you the second you passed. Zuko led you towards Aang and the others and Sokka appeared beside you "you're aware you guys are the centre of attention, right?". Zuko swallowed but nodded “yes”. You could hear the anxiety in his voice and gave him a worried look. He'd seemed so confident but of course he had to act like that even when he wasn't. "Was it really bad?" you asked and Sokka frowned. "No of course it wasn’t" Katara smiled "you both look lovely and you were just dancing!". "Yeah screw everyone else" Toph cried and you laughed. "I have to leave my advisor is calling me over" Zuko sighed "i’ll be back" he told you and moved away.
You watched Zuko go feeling rather anxious and tried to breathe. You hadn’t done anything wrong and the world wasn’t going to end. Everything would be okay! Then you noticed a tribe elder making a beeline for you and Sokka. You tried to make a break for it but Sokka caught your arm “no come on, if you get through this then that will be the worst of it”. You tried to fight him off but Sokka had an iron grip and swung you round to come face to face with the elder.
In your tribe a lot of emphasis was put on elders meaning whoever was older than you, regardless of if they were actually a good person, “deserved” your respect and could talk to you however they wanted without any repercussions.  So you smiled thinly and nodded your head to them. “Sarnaq” Sokka smiled “how are you enjoying the party?”. The man smiled at Sokka “very well thank you or atleast I was” and he turned to you. "I must say, your actions tonight were not good young lady" Sarnaq said in place of a greeting and despite the fact you and Zuko were both legally adults. That was another annoying elder tradition, everyone younger than them or just not married was still a child in their eyes. "You have gotten cocky haven’t you, woman always do" Sarnaq muttered to himself. "Cocky?" you asked a slight edge to your voice. The man narrowed his eyes "yes, just because you are of value in our tribe does not mean we will excuse scandalous behaviour, even if he is with the Firelord. Your loyalty is to your own people first, you would do well to remember that". "I was just dancing with Firelord Zuko" you retorted and Sarnaq glared. "Don’t talk back, I am trying to teach you the wisdom you clearly lack. You have nobody to blame but yourself for your bad behaviour, what did you expect wearing a fire nation dress? You were purposefully encouraging the Firelord and so his behaviour can be explained, yours on the otherhand cannot be". Sokka could see you slipping and frowned. "So by me wearing red i was inviting Fire Nation men to me?" you asked angrily "that’s what me choosing a colour means?". "It’s their colour" the man said partronisingly "of course covering yourself in it gives them ideas". You scoffed "well maybe you should all stop imagining everything i do is to send a message to men, maybe i just wanted to wear red". The man rolled his eyes "don’t be naive you know men pick up these signals in a woman, there’s no use denying you wore that dress to entice the firelord". You temper burst.  "i did not!” you cried “I do not have to entice the Firelord because he already likes me!" you snapped. Sokka grabbed your arm eyes wide but you didn’t care. The man only shook his head "it’s worse than i thought. I’m sure he tells you that but he doesn’t care about you, why would he? Now the only way to correct this is to go change, clean up the mess you’ve made and stay in your place from now on. I won’t hear any arguments" and with that Sarnaq walked away. You went to go follow him when Sokka grabbed you "no y/n don’t, he's not worth it!". Sokka dragged you outside where you could yell and you did. A lot of it.
How dare this man talk to you like that. He had no idea about your relationship with Zuko and who was he to give you orders. “What a sexist old fashioned sack of wrinkles” you cried “I hate how wrong our tribe is. The Fire Nation basically had a dictator for a hundred years and still they’re more progressive than us! No wonder I like Zuko, he treats me like a person not a little woman to be bossed around”. Sokka nodded unsure what to say and just a tad scared you’d direct your anger at him. “I’d love to leave and just see all their faces, they think they can tell me what to do and boss me around? They’ve got another thing coming. I don’t have to take it and I won’t. I’m going to show them all!”. Sokka frowned “wait y/n what are you planning?”. You smiled “wait and see” and marched back into the room.
You scanned the party and spotted Sarnaq actually talking with Zuko. You glared to see him clearly sucking up to the man he’d just bad mouthed. Your anger rose again and you thought about what Zuko had said earlier and strode towards him. Sarnaq spotted your approach and frowned. "Y/n" he said stiffly "i assume you’re here to apologise, we can do that later". "Actually i’m not here for you" you said pointedly "my business is with the Firelord". The man seemed panicked "Firelord please excuse her rudeness she is just infatuated with you". You rolled your eyes "you have no idea" and yanked Zuko to you, kissing him in front of the whole ballroom.
You heard everyone go quiet as they noticed and some people even gasped. Zuko was of course shocked but kissed you back instinctively and seemed to understand you wanted a show so he happily obliged. When you finally separated you smirked to see Sarnaq with his jaw wide open. "Firelord...see what i mean? She is desperate, i am so sorry you are not to blame". "No i am" Zuko said loudly "because i was the one who asked Y/n out 9 months ago and we’ve been dating ever since" he said loudly "Y/n and I are together so she will be spending a lot more time in the Fire nation with me". Your heart skipped at that and you grinned as Zuko took your hand. "But she’s a member of the Water Tribe...." Sarnaq babbled and Zuko nodded "yes she’s a member not a slave, so you cannot control her or tell her what to do, understand?". Zuko took a step closer to the man who paled rapidly. "Yes Firelord i am sorry". "Apologise to her" Zuko barked and Sarnaq turned to you "i am sorry Y/n". You nodded and stared at Zuko in awe. "Good" Zuko said coldly "now leave us". The man scurried away and you tried not to grin as Zuko kept his angry face on for the room. "I hope it was okay i did that" he said and you smiled "are you kidding? That was the hottest thing i’ve ever seen" you laughed your smile turning into a smirk. "I will definitely need you to act it out again for me". Zuko blushed and a small smile made it onto his angry face "well he disrespected you it had to be done...as for a repeat i am more than happy to cooperate". You grinned and tried to calm yourself. "So everyone knows" you said sobering up "i’m sorry for just kissing you but i was so sick of it". "No i’m glad you did" Zuko smiled raised your hands to his chest "this feels amazing, being here with you". "But aren’t you worried about what your people will say?" you asked not quite ready to celebrate but Zuko just smirked. "They’re angry at me no matter what i do, atleast this way i’ll be happy because you’re with me and i don’t have to hide it, that will make it all worth it". You blushed and let Zuko pull you into his arms. After a while he seperated “now...are you ready to make you debut? I want to introduce you to everyone. I mean what I said, you’ll be here as often as you like so they should get used to seeing your face”. You blushed but nodded taking his hand “let’s do this”.

Smoke and Shadow
part one
pairings: Zuko x Princess!reader
notes: it’s finally here! hope you guys enjoy this and sorry it took so long! and ofc reminder that reading the comics is suggested for this piece
summary: The Princess decides to pay Zuko a visit only to find the Fire Nation in disarray.
~ part of the fire lilies series ~
Tumblr media
Returning home from the Fire Nation always feels bittersweet; you miss your people, but you know that once you’re back in the South the ache of homesickness will be replaced by your longing to be at Zuko’s side. You once thought the end of the war would mean easier days for your relationship, but being the leaders of two different nations seemed to keep you apart more often than it kept you together. Leaving him never got any easier, but you knew in your heart that this was for the best. You had duties to fulfill and people to take care of, so you’d just have to be patient. Things will settle eventually and the distance will become easier, you just have to see it through.
“Do you really have to go? You just got here!” Kiyi complains with a frown as she watches you pack your things and prepare for your return home.
“I’m sorry, Kiyi, but my people need me.“
“Can’t someone else do it?” She retorts, prompting you to let out a small laugh of amusement. She certainly had her older brother’s attitude at times.
“I’m afraid not. I have a tribe to rebuild and students to teach,” you explain to her. “Things don’t run very smoothly when the Chief is away for too long.”
“Will you at least come back and visit me?” The little girl begs, and you can’t really find a way to say no to her when she looks at you with her best pleading eyes. “I want to see more water bending tricks!”
“I promise to come back as soon as I have the time,” you assure her before giving her a tight hug. You’ve grown rather attached to Zuko’s little sister since meeting her, so it’s not easy having to say goodbye.
A gentle knock at your door alerts both you and Kiyi of someone’s presence, but once you see Zuko’s face peeking through the doorway you smile and part from the girl so that she can run out to play in the palace halls. “My love, the ship is ready to leave when you are.”
“I suppose I’m ready,” you sigh with a melancholic smile, melting into Zuko’s touch when he pulls you into his embrace. “It’s going to be hard being away from you.”
“I know,” he comforts while resting his warm hand upon your cool cheek, “but it’s nothing we can’t handle. We’ll be together again soon.”
“I’m already counting down the days,” you profess earnestly, eliciting a soft chuckle from him in return. Rubbing his nose affectionately against your own, Zuko angles his face to reach your lips and press a tender kiss against your own. It’s the last one you’ll be sharing for some time, and he makes sure to savor it for as long as possible. Your kiss is impossibly sweet, your smell of fire lilies intoxicating, and it pains him to have to pull away from you.
“I love you, y/n. I hope you know that.”
You smile before pulling him in for another kiss, enjoying your perfect goodbye.
~~~
A month has passed since you left the Fire Nation, and the South has developed swimmingly. With the help of your sister tribe, the outer villages have slowly begun to transform into cities equipped with new buildings, homes, and even town halls. Progress is steady and your tribe is growing, and it will only be a matter of time before the Southern Water Tribe is restored to its rightful glory.
As your advisor, Hakoda has agreed to oversee the Southern Reconstruction Project so that you may focus on teaching the next generation of water benders with Master Pakku. Your time as Chief is spent either at your school or in your office to approve new construction plans and debrief with Hakoda about the progress of the rebuilding project. You’re as busy as ever, but you couldn’t be any happier.
“Sifu y/n, why do we have to learn about healing?” One of your students complains as you set out the practice mannequins for the children. “I don’t want to heal, I want to fight!”
“Healing is just as important as bending,” you explain thoughtfully. “As a wise woman once told me, ‘You cannot bend something that is broken, but you can heal something that is hurt.’ Some situations require a gentle hand, and it’s important your bending has balance. Healing can save lives, and your gift can be used to help your people.”
“Sifu y/n,” another student says with her hand raised eagerly in the air, “is it true you healed Fire Lord Zuko from a lightning strike?”
“It is,” you reply with a fond smile, laughing at the amazed gasps your students share at the story. “I wouldn’t have been able to save his life if I hadn’t known how to heal, and that’s why it’s important for you all to learn. Now any last questions before we begin?”
A little hand raises into the air and you nod, signaling them to continue. “Do you miss Zuko?”
“Always,” you sigh wistfully, the familiar ache of longing pulling at your heart strings. You wondered what he was doing now and if he was thinking of you in this moment.
After teaching your healing class, you retire to your office for the evening to look over the new construction plans Hakoda has prepared for you. However, your mind seems to be elsewhere for the night as you find yourself repeatedly looking upon the frame on your desk. The night of your coronation you’d had a local artist paint a portrait of Zuko and yourself. You shared the biggest smiles, the two of you adorned in formal water tribe attire for the festivities ahead. It had been a perfect night, and the painting served as a reminder of the wonderful time you’d had together.
Sighing, you look over your schedule for the upcoming week. Nothing too major seems to be taking place, so maybe it wouldn’t hurt if you took a short trip to the Fire Nation to see how Zuko and Kiyi were doing. Hakoda could handle the reconstruction project on his own for a few days, and Pakku could look after your students in your absence.
Grabbing a scroll and a brush, you quickly begin scribbling out a lengthy list of items for Hakoda and Pakku to oversee while you’re gone. It seems your mind is made up, and as soon as your affairs are in order you’ll be using the secret tunnel to travel to the Fire Nation to finally see Zuko again.
~~~
Zuko was exhausted.
Carrying the guilt he felt for his sister’s kidnapping as well as the awkward tension that came with working alongside his ex-girlfriend wasn’t exactly helping him keep his peace. More children were going missing with every night that passed, and it seemed he wasn’t any closer to catching his sister and her group of Kemurikage. A part of him wished it really was spirits tormenting his people instead of his sister, but he figured she’d have to turn up eventually.
“We’ll find them, Zuko,” Mai comforts, carefully resting her hand upon his tense shoulder as he stares down at the array of scrolls scattered across his desk. Various passages about the Kemurikage and information about the men part of the New Ozai Society line the endless papers, and yet none of it has gotten them any closer to figuring out where the missing children or Azula are.
“I hope you’re right,” he murmurs before shifting his gaze to the bush of fire lilies out in the courtyard. It dawns on him then that he hasn’t had the time to write to you lately, and he feels you deserve to know about Kiyi‘s disappearance and Azula’s return. He’s sure you’d know just what to do, just what to say to make him feel better, and he needs the comfort now more than anything. “I should write y/n. She cares for Kiyi just as much as I do, she should know.”
Mai’s mood immediately sours at the mention of the Southern Princess, but she’s able to mask it well enough for Zuko’s sake. Despite being willing to work with her ex-boyfriend to find her missing brother, their past relationship was still a sore subject for her. It’s not exactly easy getting over the fact that the boy you thought was in love with you was really just using you to get over someone else.
Their talk at the Boiling Rock hadn’t given her any real closure, and her encounter with the Princess at the flower shop didn’t leave the greatest impression on the girl. Mai still couldn’t see what was so special about her, and she didn’t understand what kind of future Zuko saw with her. She supposed it didn’t matter what she thought anymore, and it didn’t matter what Zuko did with his life. She was with Kei Lo now, and the Fire Lord was no longer her concern.
“Is writing a letter to your girlfriend really your top priority right now?” She can’t help but to retort sarcastically, prompting Zuko to scowl.
“Y/n could be a great help to us,” he argues defensively. “She views things more clearly than I do at times and keeps me from making rash decisions.“
“So is she your girlfriend or your babysitter?”
“Mai-!”
“I know, I know,” she sighs with a passive wave of her hand. “I’m sorry.”
Frowning, Zuko lets out a quiet breath before turning to meet her gaze. He’s unsure of how to approach such a sensitive subject, but he knows he must if any progress is to be made. “I know you’re still mad at me, and I know no apology will fix the hurt I caused you, but you have to put it behind you if we’re going to work together. Y/n is my girlfriend, and Kei Lo is your boyfriend, so why are things still so awkward between us?”
“It’s not that simple, Zuko,” Mai snaps, a bitter scowl masking her features. “It’s not just that you broke my heart, it’s that I was stupid enough to let you! I should have known I’d never be enough for you, and you talking about her is like throwing salt in the wound. It’s like a constant reminder that I was never good enough for you, that what we had was all just a lie. I never want to feel that way again, but I feel it every time I’m around you. I’m like the pathetic ex-girlfriend you can’t get away from.”
“Mai…”
“I can’t believe I still care about you,” she grumbles sullenly.
“I care for you too,” he insists before gently taking one of her hands in his own. “Maybe not in the way you want me to, but I do. I always have, even when we were children and I pushed you into the fountain to put out that apple on your head. You’re a good friend, and I owe you more than I can ever repay you for what you did at Boiling Rock. Can’t we still be friends?”
Mai is silent, her gaze set firmly upon her hand in his own. The sensation is warm and familiar, comforting, but she knows the hurt that is to come if she agrees to his request. Maybe one day she can learn to love Kei Lo and fill the emptiness, be the one doing the using instead of the one being used, but she can’t accomplish this feat with Zuko in the picture.
The room is quiet and tense, but still she does not remove her hand.
And neither of them notice the figure in the doorway watching the scene unfold.
~~~
You’re surprised to find Zuko’s end of the tunnel blocked off by Fire Nation guards. He hadn’t been expecting you of course, but you didn’t think you’d find the passage closed off like this. What had happened while you were away to promote such a drastic measure?
“Excuse me,” you call gently so as to not startle the guards that face away from you, “I’m here to see Fire Lord Zuko. May I cross?”
“I’m sorry, but no one is allowed in or out of the Capital City,” one guard states gruffly, but his companion waves him off dismissively.
“She’s the Southern Chief and the Fire Lord’s girlfriend,” he explains before gesturing you to continue forward. “I’m sure he wouldn’t be happy to hear we’d blocked his beloved from seeing him.”
“O-Oh, my apologies,” the first guard stutters sheepishly before clearing himself out of your path.
“What’s going on? Why is the Capital City in lockdown?”
“Children of the Fire Nation have been going missing and the people are becoming restless,” he explains. "The Fire Lord wants everyone to stay put until a culprit has been caught and the children are returned safe.”
“How awful,” you murmur quietly before an uneasy feeling begins to hit you. “Have you heard anything of Kiyi, Ursa’s daughter? Is she safe?”
The two guards exchange solemn glances, and that’s all you need to know before immediately rushing towards the palace. If Kiyi is in danger, you want to do everything you can to help Zuko find her and the other missing children before it’s too late. Who knows what danger they could be in?
Your trek to the palace isn’t easy, what with the protests and unrest occurring on the streets as a result of Zuko’s harsh restrictions, but you manage to weave your way through the chaos and make it to your destination. You’re a bit overwhelmed by the commotion, blind to the conflict that’s been occurring in your absence and unaware of what exactly is going on, but you do your best to focus on finding Zuko first.
Surprisingly, the palace hallways are relatively empty, and you slow your sprint to a walk once you reach the throne room corridors. The pristine gold doors are left open, and the sound of Zuko’s voice carries through the air. Already you can feel the worry melting away just by hearing him speak, and though you want nothing more than to run in and throw yourself into his arms you stop to listen. You want to make sure you’re not interrupting anything important before you announce yourself.
“I care for you…” you hear him say, prompting your brows to furrow slightly in uncertainty. You can’t exactly make out everything he’s saying or what the context of his conversation is, but you’re able to note the soft gentleness in his tone, and a part of you is starting to feel strange listening in. Who is he speaking to in such a manner?
Peeking your head around the corner, you can’t help but feel your heart begin to sink to your stomach at the sight before you.
Zuko stands in the center of the throne room, gently clasping one of Mai’s hands in his own as he speaks to her in a comforting manner. You’re not sure what exactly they’re saying to each other or why she’s there, but watching the scene unfold before you fills you with dread and insecurity. Surely Zuko wouldn’t be unfaithful to you… would he?
You’ve worked hard to build your trust in him again after all you’d both been through, but you can’t help but question what he’s been up to in your absence. Why was he with his ex-girlfriend, and why he was holding her hand in what looked to be like an intimate moment? Was he thinking of leaving you again? Had he changed his mind about your relationship? What had you just walked in on?
“Zuko?” You call meekly, as if you shouldn’t be there interrupting their moment and as if you’re not his actual girlfriend. The two startle at the intrusion, but when Zuko realizes that you’re actually there before him he immediately releases his hold on her and runs towards you.
“Y/n!” He exclaims, engulfing you in the tightest hug imaginable. You’re unsure how to react at first, still reeling from what you’d just seen, but eventually you return his hug. Your weary gaze sets upon Mai who keeps her eyes down to the ground and refuses to look you in the face.
“Am I interrupting something?” You warily ask when he finally pulls away. He falters for a moment, almost offended by your insinuation.
“No! No, of course not,” he rushes to explain. “We were just… talking.”
“It kind of looked like it was more than just talking to me,” you say defensively. You don’t want to be jealous or accusatory, but you can’t help it. How could you not question them being alone together and holding hands?
“Princess, I swear there is nothing going on,” Zuko pleads earnestly, taking both of your hands in his own. “Mai is only here because the children of the Fire Nation are going missing and she’s helping me find them.”
“They took my little brother,” she adds quietly, solemn gaze still focused on the ground.
“They took Kiyi,” Zuko utters sorrowfully. His eyes are full of shame and worry, and you find it difficult to be upset with him when he looks so hurt and vulnerable.
“I’m so sorry,” you murmur softly before pulling him in for a tight hug.
“I have the city on lockdown until I’m able to find the people responsible, and I’m doing everything I can to get them back. I’m sorry you had to find out like this, I didn’t mean to exclude you. I swear I was just going to write you and ask for your help.”
“You never have to ask,” you say with a comforting smile. “I came to surprise you because I missed you, and I’m glad I did.“
“So am I,” Zuko professes earnestly before cupping your face and pulling you in for a kiss.
Neither of you notice Mai leaving the room.
~~~
Zuko catches you up on everything- the Kemurikage, the “Safe Nation Society,” the kidnapping of Tom-Tom and Kiyi, Azula’s return, and Ukano’s possible connection to Zuko’s sister. It was a lot to process, but you were quick to get up to speed so that you’d be able to do all you could to help.
“I don’t think you should have kicked Aang out of the throne room,” you chide Zuko after hearing him recount his disagreement with the Avatar. Fire Nation guards escort you to the Capital City prison as you converse, and Zuko hopes that by the time you reach your destination Mai’s father will be caught and ready for questioning.
“I tried to do things his way, but if he isn’t going to see things my way then I can’t have him around,” he tries to explain.
“Zuko, I saw firsthand how restless your people have become as a result of your harsh lockdown rules. Aang might be right,” you try to reason with him. “I don’t think causing fear and uncertainty is going to help us find the missing children.”
“I had to do something,” he argues weakly, “I have to get my sister back and stop Azula before it’s too late.”
“You will,” you assure him firmly, giving his arm a comforting squeeze.
As the two of you talk, Mai trails along quietly behind you both. A whirlwind of emotions are festering in her mind; she wants her brother returned to her, but she feels guilty exposing her father to Zuko and his guards and costing him his freedom. It feels like she’s working with the enemy, and perhaps in a way that’s true.
She can’t help the scowl that plays upon her features as she watches you and Zuko walk arm in arm to the prison. While she’s fretting over her family, it almost seems as if you two don’t have a care in the world about anything but each other. That isn’t true, of course, but her resentment clouds her better judgement, and all she can feel is disdain for the couple in front of her.
You were Chief of the Southern Water Tribe, a master bender, kind, beautiful. She could understand why any guy would want you, but why did Zuko? And why did you have to want him back? You had practically everything, you grew up a Princess, so why couldn’t you have just let her have this one thing? Why did you have to take him back and take him away from her after she’d finally gotten the one thing she’d always wanted?
“I’m sorry about your brother,” a voice says, pulling Mai away from her thoughts. So wrapped up in her cynicism, she hadn’t even realized they’d made it to the prison. A couple feet away, Zuko speaks to one of his men about the riot that had broken out on behalf of the Safe Nation Society. And in front of her you stand, your features kind and your words remorseful despite the tension you share.
“Thanks,” she says flatly, unsure of what else to say. The last time she’d spoken to you had been in the flower shop, and it hadn’t exactly been a pleasant conversation. She knows that you’re trying, and she knows this is all just as uncomfortable for you as it is for her, but she still isn’t so easily swayed. She doesn’t think you deserve her sympathy or understanding, and she doesn’t plan to go out of her way to be nice to you.
“I don’t have any siblings so I can’t imagine what you’re going through, but I want to help however I can if you’ll let me.”
“You can help by staying out of the way,” she replies bluntly, her gaze hardening much to your surprise. “Zuko promised he’d help me find Tom-Tom, and I don’t need you distracting him while you’re here.”
“I want to help him find Kiyi,” you argue defensively, “I’m not going to get in the way of something as important as finding the missing children. Why can’t you believe that?”
“Because you have a really good track record of getting in the way of things that are important to me.”
Stunned by her admission, you can’t help but find yourself falling short of words. You knew Mai didn’t exactly think highly of you or approve of your relationship, but did she really still believe that you’d stolen Zuko away from her? You’re not to blame for what Zuko did to her or what she went through. You’ve endured just as much hurt as she has if not worse, and it isn’t fair for her to paint you as the problem.
“I didn’t even know about you and Zuko until we were already broken up! I’ve never personally tried to hurt you, and I don’t expect you to like me, but you need to get over yourself. Zuko isn’t what’s important here, you and I are not what’s important, it’s the kids. It’s Tom-Tom and Kiyi and all the children that are probably so frightened and alone. Can we at least agree on that?!”
It’s silent for a moment, you and Mai simply starting each other down for what feels like ages until she finally relents. Her tense shoulders slowly fall in defeat and she sighs, somewhat embarrassed at her little outburst. She’d been letting her emotions get the better of her lately, failing to conceal them like she was usually so good at doing, and it was painfully embarrassing for her to come to this realization.
“You’re right,” she murmurs, “let’s just focus on finding the children. The sooner this is all over the sooner we never have to see each other again anyway.”
“Fine by me,” you huff indignantly. Though Mai has more to say, she isn’t given the time to once she spots her boyfriend being escorted towards the prison in handcuffs.
“Kei Lo!” She exclaims before turning to the Fire Lord. “Zuko, this is obviously a mistake! Get him out of those cuffs!”
“I’m not so sure,” Zuko says hesitantly, looking to you for guidance to see if he’s making the right choice. You merely give him a hesitant shrug, not really wanting to get involved in their quarrel. You don’t know the full story, so it’s better to just stay out of it.
“Are you serious? You need her permission to let my boyfriend go?” She exclaims exasperatedly. “Release him!”
“What were you doing with the Safe Nation Society, Kei Lo?” Zuko prods firmly, ignoring Mai’s complaints.
“They ran into me! Literally!” The boy argues to try and prove his innocence.
“You’ve betrayed your allies bedore, who’s to say you aren’t acting as a double agent now!”
“Zuko! Stop being ridiculous!” Mai scolds angrily before looking to you. “Tell him he’s being ridiculous.”
“I’d rather not get involved…” you trail off awkwardly, only irritating her further.
Eventually Zuko allows for Kei Lo’s release, but you can tell by the look on his face that he isn’t too happy about it. His firm gaze seems to be burning holes into the back of Kei Lo’s head as he watches Mai embrace the boy, and a part of you wonders if he’s feeling some sort of jealousy towards him. Surely he wouldn’t be, he has no reason or right to be jealous, at least you think so anyway.
“Zuko?” You utter softly, placing a careful hand on his back to get his attention. “If I ask you something… will you be honest with me? Even if it’s something I don’t want to hear?”
“Of course, my love,” he says earnestly before giving you his full undivided attention. “What is it?”
“Do you… do you still-“
“Zuko!”
You startle away from Zuko at the sudden intrusion, eyes widening as you see Aang sprinting towards your boyfriend with Suki and Ty Lee in tow. You’re honestly surprised to see him considering he should have been heading back to the South with Katara and Sokka by now, and based upon his reaction it seems he’s just as surprised to see you.
“Aang!”
“Y/n! What are you doing here?” He exclaims in bewilderment.
“I could ask you the same thing,” Zuko interrupts. “I thought you left.”
“Well you thought wrong, buddy!” Aang corrects him impatiently. “We’ve been looking all over for you! Suki, Ty Lee, and I found something you need to see! Come on!”
“Fire Lord,” one of Zuko’s men interrupts, “the sun will set before we know it. We need to make a plan our people will rise up again.”
Zuko shares a quiet glance with the men before looking to Aang. You know what his answer is going to be, and you know that the Avatar isn’t going to like it.
“I’m sorry, Aang, but General Mak is right. I need to handle this my own way.”
“Even if your way is stupid?!” He rebuffs indignantly.
“What Aang means to say,” you correct, trying to put a nicer spin on his words, “is that maybe the approach you’ve been taking isn’t working. Maybe keeping your people on lockdown like they’re criminals in their own homes will only make things worse. You need to change your approach.”
“I’m sorry, Princess, but I know what’s best for my people.”
“I’ve seen your people, and they’re not happy. They’re scared, and I know you want to find Kiyi and stop Azula but you need to start thinking rationally first.”
“Can you please just trust that I know what I’m doing? Help me come up with a new plan to keep the Fire Nation citizens in order and find Azula and Ukano so that we can find Kiyi.”
His pleading eyes beg for your understanding and support, but you’re hesitant. You know that Zuko means well, but you don’t agree with his methods at all. Being a leader yourself, you know that fear and unrest is not the way to solve problems. You must treat your people with trust and respect like they deserve, otherwise they won’t be able to do the same for you.
Luckily, Aang buts in before you’re able to shoot Zuko’s request down. An air scooter is abruptly thrown beneath your boyfriend, lifting him up and carrying him away to spirits know where- if the situation weren’t so serious you’d laugh at how discombobulated Zuko looks being swept up off his feet and whisked away by a ball of air.
“Aang, slow down!” You call out before sprinting after the pair. Suki and Ty Lee are right beside you chasing them down. “Why are our reunions always so chaotic?”
“I don’t think this group knows how to live without chaos,” Suki quips with a breathless laugh. “It’s good to see you, y/n. Ty Lee and I will catch you up on everything on the way there.”
“I’d love nothing more,” you applaud gratefully.
You can only hope that whatever it is they’ve found will make things much easier from here on out.
Because you’re not sure how much more of this you can take.

Sokka x f!Reader | "Family"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so tbh i've always been a Toph girlie and throughout my teenage-hood was a huge Zuko girlie.. so why did some of my Sokka x readers eat when I was sixteen??? sum; After proposing to his long term girlfriend after the war, Sokka and [YourName] wed and soon welcome their first child before greeting their second. tw; fem!reader, everyone does age in this fic, pregnancy, not so steamy makeout leading to implications, birth !!!, wc; 3.1k
Tumblr media
It was right after taking out the fleet of fire nation airships did Sokka propose to [YourName]. It was so out of character and unexpected. She originally thought he was joking but the desperate look for an answer in Sokka’s eyes made [YourName]’s laughter die down, “You’re… being serious?” she asked, making Sokka nod. [YourName]’s laughter turned into tears of joy, sure they were only freshly sixteen- but it was normal to get engaged so young, it did not mean they had to marry young. It finally processed in [YourName]’s brain that her boyfriend was proposing to her to marry her, she cried and accepted the proposal.
When returning to Aang and the others, Sokka couldn’t keep his big mouth shut and announced the engagement after celebrating Aang’s win. Katara, Aang, and Zuko all were shocked into silence while [YourName] simply smiled and nodded while Suki and Toph laughed. After things calmed down, Sokka found the betrothal necklace he had made weeks prior. While [YourName] was talking to her future sister-in-law, Sokka clipped the necklace around his future wife’s neck and the sight made Katara’s heart melt. She had never seen Sokka so happy before, and the smile on [YourName]’s face matched his happiness.
After getting properly looked at and after Zuko is crowned the Fire Lord, everyone meets up in Ba Sing Se in Iroh’s tea house. At the Jasmine Dragon, [YourName] leaned against Sokka as he drew, things seemed so calm and [YourName] hoped they would remain that way. It was for a bit, Zuko almost went off his rocker, they found his mother and little half sister, and then some more adventures happened all up until Sokka and [YourName] were both twenty-one. Realizing there was no more adventure needed from the Gaang around the world, Sokka and [YourName] settled in the Southern Water Tribe. Sokka took a job in the council before the wedding was put into action. The wedding for Sokka and [YourName] was small, just Aang, Katara, Zuko, Toph, Suki, [YourName]’s parents, Hakoda, and Malina. Medium sized but had everyone important to [YourName] and Sokka. After the wedding, Sokka was approved to leave and the two spent almost two weeks in the Fire Nation just relaxing.
Shortly after returning from the honeymoon and adjusting into a routine, there was no shock when [YourName] announced her first pregnancy a few years later. Everyone was excited, asking questions about which gender they hoped to have or what they wanted to name their child. After questions died down, everyone decided to head out and enjoy a meal. After returning to the Southern Water Tribe from Republic City, [YourName] watched her husband mature through the days as weeks passed. Between his job and the upcoming child, she knew Sokka was going to mature but it was beautiful seeing it happen.
Around [YourName]’s due date, Aang, Katara, and little Bumi were all visiting. Sokka decided to step out to get something for dinner and [YourName] was showing Katara around the new home Sokka and [YourName] recently moved in with the upcoming arrival of their child. [YourName] was mid showing the kitchen when she felt a pain and wetness grace her lower half. Katara gasped and went right into action, she had given birth and assisted in plenty of births to know what she had to do. Trying to calm [YourName] down while yelling for Aang to go take Bumi and find Sokka was the hardest part. Mostly because Bumi didn’t want to leave the house and [YourName] was refusing to do anything until Aang left. Eventually Aang just scooped his son and left, leaving Katara to try and calm her friend down. Of course nothing was going calmly until Sokka had busted into the bedroom where Katara led [YourName] to lay down. Katara was on full delivery duty, which meant Bumi and Aang couldn’t interfere with whatever she was doing. Sokka only left the room less than a handful of times to retrieve water or whatever Katara requested his wife needed. Eventually, [YourName] would have to start pushing, and while she was doing that Sokka made sure to let [YourName] know how well she was doing, moving some of her hair out the way, and when her hair fell out of her very loose style, Sokka had no problem trying his best to put it back up. Eventually, there was a loud cry piercing through the room and so much relief was felt between Sokka and [YourName]. “It’s a girl!” Katara said with a proud smile on her face as she set the newborn on [YourName]’s chest so she could finish up what needed to be done. [YourName] had fresh tears running down her face as she admired her daughter, “Oh she’s so perfect..” [YourName] whispered, causing Sokka to agree quietly. After getting their daughter cleaned up and checked on, Katara left Sokka and [YourName] to bond with their daughter.
It had been after a feeding that Sokka finally had the courage to hold his daughter and do skin-to-skin. [YourName] watched her husband bond with their first born child, a soft warm smile on her tired face. Despite being so tired and drained, [YourName] wanted to give her daughter a name. “How about..” [YourName] began before thinking “Shui, for a name.” the tired new mother offered. Sokka was already smiling and if he could, it would have widened, “I think it’s perfect.” he hummed before coming close to his wife. “Now, rest,” Sokka whispered, pressing a kiss to his wife’s temple. [YourName] and Sokka would raise Shui into a spunky little girl. She was a huge daddy’s girl and her personality practically matched her father’s. Between the sass and how things come naturally to her, she was most definitely Sokka’s daughter. Sure, Shui shared some features of her mother, but that was Sokka’s through and through. Shui was now six-years-old and was starting to grow her own personality of her own and [YourName] and Sokka both encouraged Shui to do so.
Shortly after Shui’s sixth birthday, Sokka was requested to an emergency meeting which meant [YourName] was in charge of putting Shui to bed by herself. [YourName] had done this plenty of times to know the tricks, but she didn’t need to pull any of them out. Sokka kissed his daughter’s head before heading out after dinner, and soon after [YourName] got her daughter into the bath and changed into her nightgown. [YourName] scooped her happy daughter into her arms, making both of them go into a fit of laughter. “Good night, Princess..” [YourName] whispered, booping her daughter’s nose before kissing Shui’s forehead. [YourName] shut her daughter’s door before heading back toward the kitchen and put leftovers away, started to clean the areas that were used, and headed to get ready for bed. [YourName] had no idea how long her husband was going to be at this meeting, but she hoped he’d be home soon to keep his side of the bed warm. [YourName] had just finished changing, letting her hair down, when she heard her husband return. With excitement in her light steps, she rushed over to the man she happily married years ago. “How was the meeting?” [YourName] asked, reaching up to caress her husband’s face. “Great, they requested me join the council in Republic City.” Sokka hummed, leaning down to press a kiss to his wife’s lips. [YourName] gave him a surprised look before pushing Sokka away from her face, “You’re just going to drop this great news and casually try to kiss me? Sokka! This is great news!” [YourName] said in an excited tone. Sokka rolled his eyes playfully before laughing “It’s exactly why I’m trying to kiss you.” he joked before bringing his wife into a kiss. [YourName] laughed into the kiss, allowing her husband to slip his tongue into her mouth. The sudden action caused [YourName] to gasp, but she happily took the bait Sokka was obviously setting out. Sokka’s hands fell from [YourName]’s face down to her waist, which would eventually fall down to her bum. With little needing to be said, [YourName] pulled away for a moment to hop up and Sokka happily caught her. His hands held her thighs as he walked back toward their bedroom.
Once in the bedroom, Sokka and [YourName] fell onto the bed. Their laughter muffled between their kisses, Sokka gently squeezed [YourName]’s thighs earning a slight whimper from the woman. They truly were testing waters they haven’t tested in weeks, but tonight was worth celebrating. Sokka and [YourName] were as quiet as possible and luckily hadn’t awoken their daughter in the process.
It shouldn’t have been a shock, but when [YourName] found out through the healer she had once more fallen pregnant she was shocked. Of course the one night she and Sokka decided to have time to themselves, to explore each other like the needy teenagers they never got to be, she falls pregnant again. [YourName] wasn’t upset at the news, just a little shocked. After being dismissed, [YourName] headed straight home.
It took [YourName] to confess to her husband what is up with her health, finally confessing she was nearly four months pregnant with their second child. Sokka was brought to silence in shock, but laughed before scooping his wife up and twirling her around as if they were younger than they actually were. [YourName] laughed before she was put down, “Spirits, makes me wonder how Shui will react..” the woman says softly.
Their daughter had been an only child for the last six years, and sharing and being nice to the kids around her came naturally, but still worried the parents as they hadn’t even planned to have a second one. Sokka and [YourName] were more than content to have Shui as an only child but obviously the spirits had other plans, plans [YourName] didn’t have the courage to change. “She’ll be fine..” Sokka comforted, pressing a kiss on the crown her head.
Two whole weeks passed and still nothing came out of Sokka or [YourName] in telling Shui she was going to be a big sister. By now, Katara and Aang found out, and the others were next in line, but [YourName] felt she owed it to her daughter to tell her before absolutely anyone else found out. As much as Sokka wanted to be there to see his daughter’s reaction to being a big sister, he allowed [YourName] to take Shui out on a girls day out.
Shui was eating up her time with her mother, finally settling in a cafe for a little treat. After receiving the small sweet treat and a drink for herself, [YourName] and Shui sat at a table near the corner of the cafe, away from most people since Sokka wasn’t ready to share the news too publicly. [YourName] watched her daughter devour her treat before finally getting to the nitty gritty of why they chose a secluded place to sit.
“Shui, have you ever wanted a sibling?” [YourName] asks her daughter, the little one looked up from her treat before thinking and nodding. “I want to have always sleepovers.” Shui states her main reason for wanting a sibling, [YourName] smiled at her soft and innocent reasoning before she spoke up, “Well, Shui, I think you’re going to get your wish.” she explained. It confused the little girl at first before [YourName] laughed and further explained, “You’re going to be a big sister, I’m going to have your little sister or brother.” the mother said.
Processing took a moment, and Shui gasped and squealed. Shui brought her mother in for a tight hug, [YourName] returning the hug. After playing 101 questions with Shui, [YourName] and Shui returned home, Shui rushing in and announcing that her mother was going to have a baby to Sokka who acted shocked at the news. Sokka picked Shui up, “I had no idea!” Sokka claimed, making [YourName] smile and admire her husband and daughter.
Months passed and Republic City was calling Sokka’s name for a meeting. Just, he couldn’t just leave his wife and daughter right now. [YourName] was due in about three weeks and he was worried the meeting would drag into days and between the traveling time and such, he decided Shui and [YourName] tag along. The whole ride there, [YourName] was fighting for her life with sea sickness and Shui was excitedly telling all the soldiers on board she was going to be a big sister, as if they hadn’t heard it the first million times. But because she was Sokka’s daughter, they let her talk about it.
Landing in Republic City, Sokka immediately took [YourName] and Shui to Air Temple Island. Aang and Katara happily greeted Sokka, [YourName], and Shui. Shui looked around before she heard yelling and after getting the ‘okay’ she went ahead to find her cousins to join in their playing. Once Aang escorted [YourName] away to show her where she could rest until dinner, Katara talked to her brother. “Why would you bring her here when she’s so close to her due date…?” Katara asked in an almost scolding tone. Sokka sighed, knowing this was coming from his sister. “I didn’t want to miss her giving birth and I thought this was probably the best option.” Sokka explained, Katara cocked an eyebrow but rolled her eyes, “Whatever, just know traveling takes a toll on the body, plus being pregnant, you owe her some sort of massage.” she huffed before taking her leave to find her children and niece.
As his sister advised, Sokka sought out his wife to give her a nice massage before dinner. “The meeting is fairly early in the morning,” Aang explains over dinner to Sokka, [YourName] and Katara were too busy teaming up together to make sure the children were eating. Sokka nods, listening to Aang speak about the importance of this meeting.
Eventually dinner was over and everyone was retiring to bed, Shui found her parents before they excused themselves to bed and asked if she could sleep with them instead of in Kya’s bed. Sokka was ready to question his daughter on the sudden switch in plans, but [YourName] interrupted and agreed. “She won’t be an only child for much longer and I want her to know how much I love her..” [YourName] said to Sokka before turning to her daughter and making her way to the bedroom.
The following morning, before the sun even thought about rising, Sokka woke up. He got ready for the meeting before kissing Shui’s head and placing a quick, lazy kiss on his wife’s lips. [YourName] had woken up temporarily to wish her husband a good day, but soon fell back to sleep until Shui woke her up for breakfast.
The day started off perfectly fine. [YourName] got her daughter dressed before herself and headed to breakfast where Bumi and Kya waited for their mother to place the food on the table. [YourName] tried to assist Katara in getting breakfast finished, but the woman simply refused and forced [YourName] to sit down and monitor the three children as they talked. Eventually, breakfast was served and everyone began to eat.
It was then that [YourName] should have noticed something was off. She tried to play it off as simple false labor pains but throughout the day it kept throbbing and getting worse. Finally, while she was walking with the kids to where they were guiding her. As they walked, she felt a slight pop before liquid ran down her legs making her halt her walking. Shui was the first to notice her mother stopping, so she stopped Bumi and Kya, and all three came to investigate. “Go find Katara-” [YourName] asked the children, and before she had to repeat herself Bumi took hold of his sister’s and cousin’s hand and went to find his mother. When Katara came rushing into the hallway, children nowhere in sight, [YourName] was straining not to absolutely collapse. With assistance from Katara, [YourName] was put into a room and preparation for the birth had begun. [YourName] was panicking and it was not helping the situation, “I’m not due for another week- Katara- please, I can wait.” she said, trying to convince herself along with Katara. “[YourName], I warned Sokka traveling strains the body and he shouldn’t have brought you- you can’t wait, this baby is coming.” The waterbender said, trying to erase whatever thoughts were going through [YourName]’s mind. “What about Sokka?” [YourName] said, nearly sobbing.
Shit.
“I can’t do this without him, Katara.” [YourName] said, fear and nervousness leaking from her words. Katara wanted to comfort her as a sister-in-law but she knew as a friend she had to help [YourName] face the music. “Sokka won’t make it back in time. If you try and hold this baby in, not just the baby will be in trouble, but you too.” Katara said, prepping her water. [YourName]’s head fell back as she sobbed, knowing she was going to have to do this with just herself and Katara.
It was shorter than Shui’s birth, but still a handful of hours passed and a healthy baby. Right as that cry was heard, the door busted open to reveal Sokka. [YourName]’s tense body relaxed at the sight. “It’s a boy!” Katara announced as she placed the little one on [YourName]’s chest as Sokka made his way over. Sokka kneeled down and profusely apologized to his wife for missing the birth of their son. Between sweat, tears, and helping her son latch on to her breast, [YourName] managed to whisper a soft ‘it’s alright.’. All that mattered now was that Sokka was here now and he got to hold his son. After the little boy ate and was washed and checked on, Katara left to allow Sokka and [YourName] to bond with their son. “No.. No more, okay?” [YourName] said as she gently handed their son over to Sokka, “Children? Yeah, I think my cap is two anyways..” Sokka hummed as he took the little one. This simply made [YourName] softly chuckle.
Things were settling down, Sokka had done skin to skin and then brought in dinner, which left naming their son. The baby went a whole night without a name, unlike his sister who [YourName] carefully planned her to be a girl. “How about Hakoda? After my father.” Sokka suggested making [YourName]’s heart melt. Hakoda, Sokka’s father, had passed the chief title to Sokka shortly before passing and it was a super emotional few weeks of [YourName]’s pregnancy.
When morning came and graced Republic City, Shui was welcomed into the now cleaned room. Sokka brought his daughter into his lap to show her baby Hakoda. Shui was at a loss for words before Sokka assisted Shui in holding her baby brother. It was moments like this that [YourName]’s heart strings were tugged. Watching Shui be so gentle and polite made [YourName]’s worries all drift away.
She couldn’t wait to see what was next.

@roseeyyyiee I saw a post of yours wanting Aang x Reader :)
Tumblr media
Katara’s hair was in her face. Now, it wasn’t something that the girl didn’t necessarily dislike; it smelled like salt water and her father’s leather uniform from carrying him earlier, but the way it tickled her nose was something she didn’t exactly enjoy. On the contrary, she did kinda like the fact that Aang’s nose was brushing the skin of her shoulder, his breathing fanning her neck as the team embraced for what they feared would be the last time.
Doubt crowded their hearts and minds, the hands of anticipation squeezed their throats until they couldn’t breathe.
Who knows what would happen after they broke apart. Would Sokka’s invention idea suddenly go downhill? Would Katara get hurt on Appa, and would be unable to water bend? Or wound Toph get stuck in a bunch of rocks she couldn’t control? Or worse, the girl thought, would she loose Aang?
The last thought lingered as so did their touch as the group separated.
Hakoda emerged from the submarine, his hair breezing at his cheeks.
He announced everyone back in, and the group followed his orders, the girl thinking Aang and Katara followed them.
She thought she heard their soft footsteps, or rough feet of Katara running to ride Appa. Or the snap of Aang’s glider as he prepared to go the Fire Lord.
But sometimes even her mind played tricks on her, and the things she thought she heard didn’t occur.
None of them did.
Tumblr media
“Hey, flower, go check on Katara, she needs to fly on Appa in order for us to move on.”
Sokka’s voice rang in her ears, her stomach twisting as she realized her friend wasn’t on the armed bison yet. Her feet hurt as she climbed the ladder to the hole, the sun almost blinding her as the darkness of the submarine flooded with light.
Her lips parted after her tongue escaped to lick them, vocal cords ready to call out Katara’s name.
Instead her mouth was opened more in surprise, doubt swarming her stomach, thick and hot.
She disturbed them just in time to see the back of Aang’s head close to Katara’s, a soft gasp escaping her when his lips pressed to hers.
He pulled back, hands going to his glider as it snapped open, the blue flags of fabric spreading out. The noise echoed in the girl’s ears as the boy took off, the air and him becoming one.
At that very moment, the girl couldn’t think of anything else as she watched Katara look off into the distance of the sky, most likely with flushed cheeks after the previous events.
The girl’s chest suddenly hurt with a sharp pain. No, not her chest, she thought, hand going up to squeeze the fabric of her shirt, her heart.
Her heart hurt. And she knew why.
She cleared her throat, her friend whipping around, expression flustered but cheeks back to normal color.
“Sokka told me to tell you to get going if we wanna move on.”
The girl’s voice hasn’t sounded any worse. Her throat was cloudy, imaginary hands gripping her vocal cords. What was heard was a soft hurting voice, almost inaudible.
But Katara heard it well and clear, her head nodding as her mind quickly focused on something else.
“Right, don’t worry I got it.” She said, running towards Appa.
The girl wasn’t so lucky, the picture of the two repeatedly playing in her mind.
She nodded back even though Katara was long gone, head dipping into the submarine as the cap closed loudly behind her.
She saw Sokka flinch from the noise. “Flower, why’d you let it slam!?”
He might of said something else but she didn’t get to hear it, hot tears not only clouding her vision but all her senses.
She didn’t know where to go so she went to where the water benders would be steering the submarines, since there wasn’t anyone in there at the moment.
There she curled up in the tightest ball she could, feeling like a child crying after their mom yelled at them.
She did feel yelled at, like the world finally yelled the fact that Aang would never love a girl like her. She was the alive and breathing opposite of Katara.
How could he like her? When she thought about herself she couldn’t think of one thing she liked. One thing Aang would like.
Because when he looked at her he just saw the girl who couldn’t bend anything, the girl who just was good at plans but most of the time they went with Sokka’s anyway.
Why was she even trying at that point. Trying to thrive in the group was hard enough, and trying for the Avatar to like her was like trying to get a pig to fly. Impossible.
So the girl stayed there, and later found a secret cabinet in the ship that she hid in while the water benders did their thing.
The tears were still flowing endlessly, her sobs only letting out when there was a loud noise to cover it up.
She couldn’t feel anymore alone.
Katara didn’t care about her.
She cared about showing the power of women and the Avatar saving the world.
Sokka didn’t care about her.
He cared about Suki and his sister.
Toph didn’t care about her.
She had other things to worry about, like her parents and her previous royal life.
And especially Aang. He didn’t love or care about her.
He loved Katara, and cared more about the water bender more than he could ever care about the girl crying in the submarine instead of fighting the Fire Nation.
He wanted someone who was brave and tough, someone Katara was and she wasn’t.
She sniffed loudly, and thankfully the water benders didn’t hear her but a small part of her wished they did.
At least then someone would show a speck of care she thrived for.
She wanted someone to care, to love her, but Aang wasn’t that person as she hoped he would be.
“Flower I feel you under there.”
She gasped at the voice, knowing all too well that it was Toph because of her feet being her eyes.
“Go away; aren’t you supposed to be helping the earth benders?”
Worry gripped the girl for a moment, scared that Toph and the team somehow failed and she came to tell her that the Avatar is dead for good this time.
Toph chuckled, sensing the girl’s worry with just her feet.
“Yeah, but I noticed you were gone…. Well Sokka did because I can’t see you. But I wanted to look for you.”
The girl wiped her eyes, thanking God that Toph couldn’t see her tears. And praying that she couldn’t sense them.
“There’s no use getting me- I’m no help to the team anyway.”
Toph blinked, seeming to be looking off into space but the girl knew she was listening.
“Yeah you are, flower, without you Twinkle Toes would still be a nervous wreck.”
The girl thought back when she assured Aang that he was ready for the Fire Lord, despite his nightmares saying otherwise. What she told him was true, every word about him being strong and brave and all the other things she told him.
“Katara would’ve said those things too.”
Toph shook her head, hair strands moving in front of her face.
“Not as good as you did.”
The simple sentence reassured her for a moment, but that didn’t change the fact that Aang didn’t feel the same way.
“Doesn’t matter!” She suddenly exclaimed. “Aang kissed Katara before he left so that means that he loves her, not me, so if anything I am useless and stupid because if he doesn’t love me than I don’t know what I am. What am I, Toph? I’m a nobody without him. Without him, I feel empty, and stupid, and lonely, and unhelpful and unloved, and-“
She was babbling on so much she didn’t notice the tears blurring her vision once again, her cheeks soaked from the liquid of doubt.
Toph reached out for the girl, grabbing her hands and held her once she found out where she was.
Toph shushed her sobs, rubbing her back as she placed her feet on the ground, so she could sense that if anyone was coming.
“It’s okay, Flower. Twinkle Toes will realize what he lost.”
The never ending tears soaked the earth bender’s clothes, but neither of them cared.
“He’ll never even notice. I was never his.” The girl whispered.
“Not true.” Toph said instantly. “And if his stupid brain doesn’t realize it I’ll make him.”
The girl let out a very small smile into her friend’s clothes.

Loyalty part 6 Avatar route
Masterlist
Pairing: Zuko X Male!Reader
Words: 938
Tumblr media
You chose to do the right thing despite the guilt you felt for betraying Zuko. You and Iroh fought some of the Dai li,letting Aang and Katara escape.
“Y/N go with them”
“But what about you?”
“I’ll be fine”He reassured you. You quickly ran to them,surprisingly she waited for you.
***
It took them a little while to trust you but after you helped them take over one of the fire nation ships,they started trusting you more. You were looking out at the sea,not realizing you had been crying,when you felt someone touch your shoulder.
“Are you alright?” Katara stepped closer to stand next to you,you sighed.
“Just thinking,this goes against everything I've been taught.”She was about to say something but you spoke before she could. “I know this is the right thing to do so why does it feel so wrong?”
“Y/N it’s okay to be conflicted,you did the right thing,trust me” You were interrupted by Aang,he ran out onto the deck and fell down. Katara ran up to him and hugged him while he was looking around frantically.
“What happened? Why are we on a fire nation ship?” You draped a cloak over his shoulders,he froze when he saw you. “And what’s he doing here?”
“Y/N’s part of the team now,he helped us back in Ba sing se”
“And he also helped us get this ship,”Sokka added.Katara dragged him away for a healing session,you knew it was gonna take awhile to earn his trust.
***
The next morning Sokka was briefing everyone about the new invasion plan.
“That’s genius”You blurted out which made everyone look up at you,Sokka gave you a quick smile before going back to explaining the plan. The conversation was cut short when you heard another ship. Everyone hurried to hide,three people from the other ship boarded. And spoke to Hakoda after a bit they left,But Toph bolted up
“They know”She bent the metal bridge,making them fall into the water. Using waterbending Katara created a huge wave that pushed the ship away,letting you make a getaway. The rest of the day went by without seeing any more ships and the team was going out to get some food. They went to talk to Aang but after a few seconds you could hear him shout. You had been avoiding him as much as possible,you knew he’d be the most difficult person to convince. Katara walked out
“Y/N we’re getting some dinner wanna join us?” She asked
“No,I'll stay in case something happens”She left.
After a few minutes Aang walked out
“You’re not suppose to be moving around”
“I’m fine”He gritted his teeth “And why do you even care? They might trust you but i don’t”
“I understand that”He seemed taken back “But I've made my decision,I'm on your side now.” You paused, “I heard what you said,about failing in Ba sing se.”
“I failed,I had a chance to turn it around and I failed. I don’t want everyone risking their lives to fix my mistake.”He gripped at his side letting out a low whimper.
“You shouldn't be walking around”You led him back to his room. “Listen, I know you think you have to do this on your own,but you don’t. All of these people including me are on your side”
“What made you change your mind?”He suddenly asked
“I spent most of my life without a choice or I chose to ignore what I didn't want to believe,but now I can't ignore it anymore. I’m choosing to do what’s right”
***
The team decided to go into the fire nation,disguising Appa as a cloud you flew through the air.Landing near a cave,everyone walked in
“Well, this is it.This is how we'll be living until the invasion begins. Hiding in cave after cave after cave after cave …”
“Sokka, we don't need to become cave people. What we need is some new clothes.”
“Yeah, blending in is better than hiding out.”Aang added
“Plus, they have real food out there.”Toph interrupted.You led them to one of the houses that had clothes drying outside,they quickly ran up, grabbed what they wanted and changed. You were walking around trying to figure out what to eat. They eventually settled on a restaurant. Aang decided to wait for you outside,but when you walked out he was gone. You walked back in
“Guys we have a problem”You whispered “Aang’s gone”
“What do mean he’s gone?”Katara whisper yelled,before she ran out to check.
***
A couple of hours later everyone was back in the cave,when Aang suddenly walked in covered in dirt.
“Where have you been? We've been worried sick.Katara stood up
“I got invited to play with some kids after school.”Everyone froze in shock
“After what?!”
“I enrolled in a Fire Nation school, and I'm going back tomorrow.”He explained
“Enrolled in what?!”Sokka yelled. Aang explained his plan which ended up with everyone not agreeing until he said.
“I guess we'll never find out about the secret river then. It goes right to the Fire Lord's palace. We were supposed to learn about it in class tomorrow.”
“Hmm, I am a fan of secret rivers ... fine, let's stay a few more days.”
“You’ll have to be careful,try not to attract any attention. Things are very different here”You warned him. But you didn’t stick around too long.

My little water bender
kataran and reader
Tumblr media
The moon and ocean spirits had not only blessed you with a wonderful life in the southern water tribe. They had also given you a wonderful husband and two children as well. It seems like all your wishing to the spirts had finally been answered, and you love the life you have. Your daughter had become the third blessing in your life and blessing you love so dearly.
Y/n " should I make seaweed noddles, smoked arctic hen legs, or salmon jerky ... there many thing I could make"
????? " mom " you had heard your name getting called you soon saw katara running into the room.
y/n " hey sweetie now what you got in rush"
katara " mom I have you show you the cool new trick I have done"
y/n " sure honey show me"
katara " no mom I can't show you in here we have to go outside"
y/n " okay" katara soon grabbed your hands and soon walked you towards some water.

Fire lily
Tumblr media
           You were the daughter of one of the world's most ruthless pirates. In his youth, your father had been Fire Lord Azulon's right-hand man and had led the fire nation's navy to victory. He had conquered the most important port cities of the Earth Kingdom. Following a political dispute and an Agni Kai that your father won with great difficulty, he chose to betray the Fire Nation. Many powerful men of the navy joined him and formed the Ruby Claw, a ruthless and greedy crew that generally preyed on fire navy ships and sometimes Earth Kingdom ships.
          You inherited cunning, intelligence and hatred for the Fire Nation. This very hatred made you start a suicidal fight with more than 50 enemy ships. You led your men to victory but you were seriously wounded and taken prisoner. The 3 remaining ships immediately set off for the Capital to surrender you to the Fire Lord. On the way you lost consciousness due to blood loss. You woke up with a bad headache. You got up from the bed you were sitting on and laughed at the stupidity of those who captured you, what idiots! They didn't even tie your hands! Then you looked at the room you were in and froze. Furs and wood, blue and brown everywhere, those idiots lost you to a crew of water tribes! Now you understood why your father said that without his iron hand the fire nation's navy would not have been able to withstand even some wooden ships.You got out as easily as you could on the deck trying to beat the dizziness and the headache. You didn't get to analyze the ship and the crew very well because the captain appeared in front of you instantly. You got scared and almost hit him in the face but you calmed down quickly. The man was not much taller than you and he looked extremely worried.
Hakoda: are you ok miss? You were unconscious for 2 days. You were captured by the Fire Nation, do you remember how or why?
Y/N: 2 days? I feel like I haven't drunk anything in ages! I don't remember for sure how, I think an idiot managed to hit my head on the deck. They probably wanted to organize a beautiful public execution for me. You know, the presence of the Fire Lord, the sages and all that. It would have been a real honor to know that I will be executed by a coward who hides behind his 14-year-old daughter.
 Now both the captain and the crew members who heard your little speech looked at you terrified. You chuckled and grabbed the first bottle of alcohol you could find then drank it all in one gulp.
Y/n: Oh! where are my manners, if it can be said that I ever had any. I'm Y/N, Y/F/N's daughter. Thank you for saving me from those coal heads.
Hakoda: I am Hakoda, Chief of the Southern Water Tribe. There is no need to thank us, the enemies of our enemies are our friends. Also, I couldn't have sat and watched you die at the hands of those monsters.
 Y/N: how sweet of you.
 You notice another water tribe ship approaching you. A tall man steps down from the side of the ship and hugs Hakoda. You looked at his arm covered with burns, sighing. You hated the Fire Nation more every day, those bastards deserved every robbery and attack you led against them. Someone had to give them a taste of their own medicine. Your train of thought was interrupted by your new savior who introduced the man as Bato, his best friend. You were invited to dine with them and listen to Bato's stories. It seems that Hakoda had children and that they were traveling with the avatar. So goodbye chances to have a good time with the handsome man next to you. Why are all handsome men taken and you only attract idiots like Zhao?! If that tin head tries to offer you the honor of marrying him one more time, I swear that one of you will die in agony, and it won't be you.
Bato: I don't mean to be rude but are you a firebender? only that the style in which you tie your hair, your name and your clothes are common in the Fire Nation.
 Y/N: good observation, yes I am a firebender. I belong to a noble family but my father betrayed the Fire Nation before I was born. Now I fight the Fire Nation in a less traditional way.
 Bato: how do you mean less traditional?
Y/N: I'm the captain of the Rubin Claw.
 The two men laughed heartily for a few moments then realized that you were as serious as possible. Hakoda looks at you in absolute terror.
 Hakoda: Don't you think it's a bit dangerous? You could die for La's name! The Fire Nation is ruthless!
Y/N: oh! Seriously? I didn't know that at all!
 You point at Bato's arm unimpressed. Hakoda sighs deeply and goes to his mattress to sleep.
Y/N: not that I don't think he's cute, but what's the deal with him? Does he have a savior complex or am I too irresistible?
Bato looks at his friend knowingly.You notice that the taller man is lost in his thoughts. You look at him with a raised eyebrow.
 Y/N: Listen Bato, I know I may seem rude and uncaring but I really like your friend. He is different from all the men I have known.
 Bato: why do I have the impression that you only knew pirates and captains of the Fire Nation Navy?
Y/N: ok ok. You got me. But I was serious when I said that I like him. I want you to be honest, do you think I have a chance with him? I know he has children but you haven't mentioned anything about a wife or girlfriend.
Bato: His wife died a few years ago in a raid, we don't like to talk about her because her death is still an open wound.
Y/N: I'm really sorry, good people don't deserve to die or lose their loved ones like this. Please send your condolences to the children, I know what it's like to lose your mother at a young age.
 Bato: I will Y/N, I will.
You went back to the cabin where you woke up and quickly fell asleep. You were woken shortly after sunrise by some urgent knocks on the door. You opened the door only to see Bato looking panicked. You went out on deck and noticed that the water tribe ships were surrounded by your own ships. You grinned dangerously when you saw Akain, your right hand and also your half brother, coming towards you.
Y/N: what took you so long to find me son of a rattlesnake?
 Akain: I would have found you sooner if you had stayed on the fire nation ship and we have the same father little viper.
Akain playfully hits you on the head and Hakoda immediately comes towards you. Your brother looks at the water tribe man amused. You roll your eyes and put the firebender back on his ship telling him to wait for you. You return to the watertribe ship and hug Bato. You notice that Hakoda is trying to convince you to give up being a pirate and you laugh briefly. You pull the captain into a passionate kiss. He is frozen for a few seconds and then he responds to your kiss.
Akain: so when you told me that you befriended the watertribe captain, did you mean friendship with benefits?
You break the kiss and pull away from Hakoda blushing furiously.
Y/N: I'm ashamed that we have the same blood, you mentally retarded idiot!
You return to your ship and kick your brother because he collapsed from laughing so much. While your ships are moving away you look at Hakoda who seemed to want to swim to you.
Hakoda: You can't kiss me and walk away like that!
Y/N: Then come and get me my love!
You giggle at his disappointed look and at Bato who tries to hold him in place. You hope that you will see each other again someday and that maybe, just maybe, you will be able to continue what you started without your annoying brother bothering you.
Let's say you had a big surprise when you snuck into Boiling Rock to help your brother escape and that Hakoda will not lose you again. This world is far too dangerous for a fire lily like you.

Pairing:  Zuko x reader
Summary:  Bato of the Watertribe
Warnings:  none?
A/N:  It’s an oofer!
Word Count:  5K+  (Oh, my)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey, look!  A sword made out of a whale’s tooth!”  Aang exclaimed excitedly, picking up the weapon.  You walked over, just as Sokka took it from the boy.
“Let me see that.”  He studied it for a moment before coming to a conclusion.  “This is a watertribe weapon.”  He announced, looking back at you and Aang, who shared looks.  “See if you can find anything else.”  Sokka instructed.  Everyone split up, digging in the bushes.
“Did someone loose something?”  Katara asked, walking over.
“No, we found something!”  Aang told her, still excited.
“It’s burned.”  You heard Sokka say.  You looked over as he held an arrowhead up examining it.  He rubbed his fingers on burn marks on a tree.  “There was a battle.  Watertribe warriors ambushed a group of firebenders.”  He declared.  You raised an eyebrow.  “The firebenders fought back, but the warriors drove them down this hill.”
You got all that from a few stray weapons and marks?”  You asked, chasing him down the hill.  “I’m impressed.”
Sokka heard you, though he didn’t show it, as he came to a stop on the beach, you smacking into his back, knocking you off balance.  Aang caught you under your arms, and stood you upright again.
“So then what happened?”  He asked, not breaking his focus.  Sokka’s shoulders slumped.
“I don’t know.  The trail ends here.”
“Wait, look!”  Katara shouted.  You all looked to where she was pointing and you saw a ship, washed up on shore.
“It’s one of our boats!”  Sokka said, he and Katara running towards it.
“How did we miss that?”  You asked yourself.  Aang shrugged at you, following them over, you right behind him.
“No, but it’s from his fleet.”  You heard Sokka say as you ran over.  He turned to his sister.  “Dad was here.”  He declared.
~~~~~~~~~~
It was dark, the only light coming from the moon.  You watched it’s reflection on the water, entranced by its beauty.  The camp was made by the ship.  Aang was laying on Appa’s leg, asleep.  Katara was in her sleeping bag, also asleep.  You turned, and noticed Sokka staring into the fire, poking it with a stick.  His unblinking eyes told you he was deep in thought.  He suddenly turned and drew his boomerang.
“Who’s there!?”  He demanded.  A figure stepped out of the shadows.
“Sokka?”  It asked.
“Bato?”  Sokka questioned back.  You could see the grin on his face.
Aang stirred from his slumber.
“Who-the-what, now?”  He asked.  Katara also awoke.
“Bato!”  She shouted quietly.  She stood and she and her brother ran toward the man.
“Sokka, Katara.”  He greeted.  Hey hugged him.  “It’s so good to see you two.”  He chuckled.  “You’ve grown so much.”  He noticed.  Aang walked forward.
“Hi, I’m Aang.”  He introduced, bowing.
“Where’s Dad?”  Sokka asked the man.
“Is he here?!”  Katara questioned, excited.  You and Aang shared a confused look.
“No.  He and the other warriors should be in the Eastern Earth Kingdom by now.”  He answered.  Sokka and Katara both hung their heads before they shuddered, feeling the cool breeze.
“This is no place for a reunion.”  Bato noted.  “Let’s get inside.”  He wrapped his arms around the siblings’ shoulders, before turning slightly and signaled you and Aang to follow.  You put out the fire with waterbending before chasing after them.
~~~~~~~~~
“After I was wounded, your father carried me to this abbey.”  Bato explained, entering into a small village.  “The sisters have cared for me ever since.”  He walked up to a group of three women.  “Superior.”  The women turned.  “These are Hakoda’s children.  They’ve been traveling with the Avatar, and a new friend from the North Pole.  I found them by my boat.”
“Young Avatar, it gives me great joy to be in your presence.”  One woman said, stepping forward and bowing.  “Welcome to out abbey.”
“Thank you.”  Aang said, bowing back.  “It’s truly an honor to be here.  If there’s anything-”
“What smells so good, Bato?”  Sokka asked, cutting the Avatar off.  He smelled the air.
“The sisters craft ointments and perfumes.”  Bato answered, gesturing to some barrels sitting a few feet away.
“Perfume?  Maybe we can dump some on Appa; because he stinks so much.  Am I right?”  Sokka joked, pointing at the big beast.  He was met with silence.
“You have your father’s wit.”  Bato told him.  He led you all to the place where he was staying for his recovery.  He slid open the door.
“Bato, it looks like home!”  Katara exclaimed.  You all walked in.
“Everything’s here.  Even the pelts!”  Sokka added.
“Yeah.  Nothing cozier than dead animal skins.”  Aang mused, a weary look on his face.  He cradled Momo in his arms.
“No way.  Stewed sea prunes!?”  Katara asked.  You turned, and saw a pot over the little fire.  Katara held a lid.
“Help yourself.”  Bato instructed.
“Dad could eat a whole barrel of these things.”  Sokka remembered.  Aang was handed a bowel.  He smelled it and made a face.  You choked yours down, somehow without complaint.
“Bato, is it true you and Dad lassoed an arctic hippo?”  Katara inquired, curious.
“It was your father’s idea.  He just dragged me along.  Well, the hippo did the dragging.”  Bato answered.  Momo began lapping up Aang’s untouched stew, only to spit it back out.
“Hey!  I ride animals, too!”  Aang exclaimed, as Katara and Sokka were happily gulping down the ‘meal’.  “One time, there was this giant eel, and I-”
“Who was it that came up with the great blubber fiasco?”  Sokka asked.  Bato laughed.
“You knew about that?”
“Everyone does.”  Katara said.
“What’s that story?”  Aang questioned.
“It’s a long one, Aang.  Some other time.”  Sokka told him.  You raised an eyebrow, but brushed it off.
“You and Dad had so many hilarious adventures.”  Katara commented.
“Not all of which were hilarious at the time, but everything’s funny with hindsight.”  Bato said, chuckling.  “Aang, please put that down!  It’s ceremonial and very fragile.”  Bato informed.  Aang had what looked like an animal head atop his own.  You crossed your arms.
“Do you have to touch?”  You asked.  Aang frowned and put it back, leaning against the wall.  You turned back to the people from your sister tribe, interested in their stories.
“Was it you or Dad that put an octopus on your head and convinced Gran-gran you were a water spirit?”  Sokka asked.
“Your dad wore the octopus, but I did the spooky voice.”  Bato explained, dropping his voice down at the end of his sentence to give them an example.  They talked for a while, as you listened to their stories, laughing at the stupidity at some of them.  It had gotten very late when Bato spoke again.  “There’s something I should tell you kids.  I’m expecting a message from your father.”
“Really!?”  Katara exclaimed.
“When?!”  Sokka asked.
“Any day, now.  Your father said he’d send a message when they found the rendezvoused point.”  Bato explained.  “If you wait until the message arrives, you can come with me, and see your father again.”  Bato offered.
“It’s been over two years since we’ve seen Dad!  That would be so incredible!”  Sokka exclaimed.  You suddenly became nervous.  Would they want to see their father?  Would you have to travel with Aang alone?  Of course, you were happy for them, and you would understood if they wanted to go see their dad.  That didn’t mean you couldn’t worry or be disappointed.  “Katara-”
Katara cut her brother off.  “I do really miss him.  It would be great to see Dad.”
“It’s been far too long, hasn’t it?”  Bato asked, softly.  “I’m not sure when word will arrive, but when it does, I’ll let you know.”
You turned, hearing the door.  You noticed Aang must have left.  You bit your bottom lip, thinking.
“It would be great, but we can’t.”  Sokka told Bato.  “We have to take Aang and Y/n to the North Pole, first.”
“Even if we had time to wait for the message, who knows how far we’d have to travel?  We don’t have time for a long detour.”  Katara added.  You smiled, glad that they thought of others, not just themselves and their own happiness.  At the same time, you felt terrible that they couldn’t see their father.  You huffed a breath of air and leaned against the wall.  Aang walked in, a few minutes later.
“Sorry I was gone so long.”  He apologized, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Hey, Aang.  I didn’t notice you left.”  Katara voiced.
“Yep, but now I’m back.  Sure…could….go for some delicious sea prunes.”  He said, sitting and taking the bowel, and eating what he could.  You watched him suspiciously.  Something was off.  Something was definitely off.
~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning, Bato led you all to the boat you’d discovered the night before.  “This ship is sentimental to me.”  He informed.  “It was built by my father.”
“Is this the boat he took you ice-dodging in?”  Sokka asked.
“Yep.  It’s got the scar to prove it.”
You smiled.
“How about you, Sokka?  You must have some good stories from your first time ice-dodging.”
Sokka frowned at this.
“He never got to go.  Dad left before he was old enough.”  Katara explained.  You frowned and placed a comforting hand on Sokka’s shoulder.
“Oh, I forgot, you were too young.”  Bato recalled.
“What’s ice-dodging?”  Aang questioned.
“It’s a rite of passage for young watertribe members.  When you turn fourteen, your dad takes you-” Bato paused his explanation, looking towards a still frowning Sokka.  He placed his hand on his other shoulder.  “You know what?  You’re about to find out.”
~~~~~~~~~
The next thing you know, you’re all on the boat, going through the water.
“Ice-dodging is a ceremonial test of wisdom, bravery, and trust.”  Bato started.  “In our village it was done by weaving a boat through ice-bergs.”
“How are we supposed to ice-dodge without ice?”  Sokka asked.  You looked to the rocks sticking up out of the waves.
“Great.”  You mumbled.
“You’ll be dodging…..those.”  He paused for affect, pointing to a large cluster of rocks just ahead.  “Sokka, you steer, and call the shots.”  Bato informed.  “Lead wisely.  Katara, you secure the main sail.  The winds can be brutal, so be brave.  Aang, you control the jib.  Without your steady hand, we all go down.  Your position is about trust.”
“I know that.  Why wouldn’t I know that?  I’m the Avatar, I know about trust.”  He said, crossing his arms.  You crossed yours as well, sending him a look of uneasiness.
“For this to be done right, I cannot help.  Y/n, come sit with me.  There are only three open positions.  I’m sorry you don’t get to participate.”
“It’s fine.”  You admitted, sitting next to him.
“You pass or fail on your own.”  He told the others.  The boat glided effortlessly above the sea.  It would have been peaceful, if not for the very large rocks you were supposed to be sailing through.  You focused on your breathing while Sokka shouted orders.
“Aang, ease up on the jib.  Katara, steady.”  He instructed.  “Aang, less sail.  Katara, give him room!”
They did as they were instructed, the boat turning this way and that.  At one point, you’d been thrown into the side of the ship.
“There’s no way through!”  Katara said, noticing a large cluster of jagged rocks.
“We can make it!”  He insisted.  Bato stood.
“Sokka, you’ve already proven yourself.  Maybe we should-”
“Aang, I’m gonna need air in that sail.”  He declared.  The boy nodded.  “Katara, I want you to bend as much water as you can between us and those rocks!”
“We’re gonna die.”  You muttered.
“Now!”  Sokka yelled.  They did as they were told, and the boat rose.  Your eyes widened in a mix of terror and amazement.  The boat made it over, and Aang and Katara stopped bending, the boat sliding down the remainder of the wave, and returning to its normal duties.  Your jaw dropped.  You spun around quickly.
“Sokka, that was amazing!!”  You complimented, crushing him in a hug.
“Thank you.”  He barely breathed out.  You let go of him, and he inhaled deeply through his mouth.  When the ship had landed back on shore, you all got out and Bato had a bowel of paint, you guessed, in his hand.
“The spirits of water bear witness to these marks!”  He put an arch on his forehead, with a dot below it.  “For Sokka, the mark of the wise!  The same mark your father earned.”  He turned to Sokka’s sister.  “For Katara, the mark of the brave!”  He painted a crescent moon on her forehead.  “Your courage inspires us.”  You stood next to Bato, smiling, as you didn’t take place in the test.  “And for Aang, the mark of the trusted.”  He painted a simple line across Aang’s forehead.  You saw Aang’s eyes grow big.  It wasn’t amazement, though.  It looked like alarm.  “You are now an honorary member of the watertribe.”  Bato informed.
“I can’t.”  Aang said, looking down.
“Of course you can!”  Katara said.  Aang wiped the mark off with his sleeve and the back of his hand.
“No.”  He insisted, backing up.  “You can’t trust me.”  You frowned, eyebrows pinched together.
“Aang, what did you do?”  You questioned, a tone in your voice the boy had never heard before.  It was almost…..threatening.
“I-” He started.
“Aang?  What are you talking about?”  Katara asked.  He reached into the flap of his shirt.
“A messenger gave this to me for Bato.”  He said, pulling out a crumpled up paper.  You pieced two and two together.  Your eyes widened before narrowing.
“You didn’t!”  You hoped.  Oh, how you hoped you were wrong.  Katara took it, unrumpled it and gasped, putting a hand over her mouth.  Sokka stepped up behind her, looking over her shoulder.
“You have to understand.  I was afraid you wouldn’t-”
“This is the map to our father!!”  Sokka shouted.  “You had it the whole time!?  How could you!?”
Aang squeezed his eyes shut, no doubt not wanting to see Sokka’s fury.  But he could still hear it.  Sokka wasn’t finished.  “You can go to the North Pole without me!  I’m going to find Dad!”  He determined, stomping in the other direction.  Bato started to speak.
“Now Sokka, I think you should-”
“Katara, are you with me?”  The boy impatiently asked, turning around.  Katara looked to Aang before frowning and hanging her head.
“I’m with you, Sokka.”  She determined.  You crossed your arms, sick of their behavior.  You watched Sokka, Katara and Bato all walk away.  You ran a frustrated hand through your hair, messing it up.  You wanted to scold Aang.  To yell and scream at him, but he was much too fragile for that right now.  You instead, bit your lip and pulled him in for a hug, though he didn’t reciprocate until he started crying.  Your currently frozen heart melted, and you felt bad for the boy.
“They told him, no, ya know.”
Aang sniffled.  “What?”
“After you left, when Bato told them about the letter, they said they couldn’t.  They said they had to go with you.”  He fell silent.  “And I’m disappointed in you for lying, and behaving in such a childish manner, but I realize you were scared.”  You whispered, rubbing his back.  “You didn’t want to lose them.  You couldn’t lose them.  But I’m afraid you just might have.”  You paused, thinking.  “Aang, I’m going to go with you.  Not just to the North Pole.  I’m going with you when you learn earth and fire.”  You gave him a squeeze.  “You’re gonna need all the help you can get.”  You teased, trying to lighten the mood a little.  He remained silent.  “Come on.  Let’s go get Appa ready.”  You told him.
~~~~~~~~~~~
When you got back to the abbey, Katara, Sokka and Bato were getting their things together, prepared to leave.  Aang floated in the air and landed on Appa’s head, hugging his knees, watching them.  You saw Katara approach Aang and you walked over to Sokka and Bato.  You bowed at Bato.
“It was very nice to meet you.  Thank you for all of the stories you shared.  Even if it was mainly for their benefit.”
“My pleasure.”
“You’re not coming with us?”  Sokka asked.  You shook your head.
“There’s no reason to.  He’s not my father, and Aang needs help.  Besides, he’s going to my home, remember?  Just as you’re going to find yours.”
Sokka frowned.  You smiled softly at him, stepping forward and pulling him into a hug.  “It was nice to get to know you, Sokka of the Southern Watertribe.”  You pulled away and bowed slightly.  “Till we meet again.”
“If we meet again.”  He mumbled.  You turned and hugged Katara, as she was approaching.
“Goodbye.”  You whispered.
“Take care of him.”  She whispered back.
“I will.”  She pulled away and jogged to catch up with her party.  “Good luck!”  You yelled, waving.  Katara and Bato waved back, though Sokka still looked sullen.  You turned and climbed atop Appa, running your hands through his fur as you settled down into the saddle.
Aang turned the giant bison, and he slowly walked out of the abbey.  Aang pulled him to a stop so he could watch the three figures in blue disappear among the trees.  “I’m an idiot.”  He muttered to himself.  You frowned.
~~~~~~~~~~~
“What are we waiting for again?”  You asked.  Appa was stopped by the shore, next to Bato’s boat.  Aang was laying between Appa’s horn, and Appa’s head.  Aang was about to answer when one of the sisters walked over.
“Avatar, you must leave.”  She said.
“Okay, I get it.  Everybody wants me gone.”  Aang replied, pulling on Appa’s reigns.  He must be tightening them, you thought.
“A group of people came to the abbey looking for you.”  The sister informed.  You quickly sat up, as you were leaning on the saddle, seeing as there was so much more room now.
“Who?”  Aang asked.
“A fierce looking woman with a horrible monster.  And a young man with a scar.”  She explained further.  Your eyes widened.
“Zuko.”  Aang determined, a scowl now on his face.
“The beast was using the scent of a necklace to follow you.”  She alerted.  You turned to Aang with a panicked look.
“Katara and Sokka!”
Aang gasped, grabbing his glider.
“Get on!”  He instructed.  You did as you were told, and he rose into the sky.  You flew back to the abbey, clinging onto Aang for dear life, when you saw a large, brown figure, with figures on it.  You saw blue stick out from the more muted colors, and recognized them as Sokka and Katara.
Aang flew in low, as the creature’s tongue lurched out, it standing up on its hind legs.  Everyone fell off, and, seeing as you were close enough to the ground, you let go of Aang and rolled, bringing yourself to your feet.  The creature stumbled and fell.  The woman stood and whipped him, making the creature stand.  She got back on it and charged Aang, until Appa flew in, and knocked them both into a wall.  You grinned and ran over to Sokka and Katara.  You helped the sisters drag them to a corner, so they were out of the way.
“Told you I’d see you again.”  You muttered to Sokka.  He didn’t get to respond, because you had already left.  You turned and saw Zuko shoot fire at Aang, who blocked it with his glider, immediately flinging wind at him.  He also dodged, and they entered a dance, neither getting the upper hand.  Zuko closed the distance and managed to knock Aang’s glider away, but Aang kept dodging, none of Zuko’s hits landing.  You rolled your eyes and went to help, but they both shot fire and air at each other at the very same time, creating an explosion and sending the lot of you flying.
Zuko and Aang both landed on roofs, breaking some of the tiles, while you smashed roughly into a nearby wall, creating a small crater.  You fell and landed on the ground, making the pain worse.  You yelled out.  Your arms were slightly burnt because of the explosion, and your back was sending jolts of pain through the rest of your body.  You pulled yourself to your knees, but while you were doing this, you were hunched over, sending more jolts through your body.  You yelled out again, tears pricking your eyes.
“Y/n!!”  The Avatar shouted.
“Stay focused, Aang!”  You shouted back, not looking up at him.  You felt a presence by your side, and you looked, seeing Iroh.  He helped you to your feet.  You stared at him in shock.
“No tea today.”  You muttered to him, running off.  Aang and Zuko were fighting on the roof.  The creature jumped up as well, the girl on his back, trying to lick Aang.  Though, as you had figured out, his tongue paralyzes its prey.  Aang jumped down, avoiding it, only to be met by Zuko’s fire again.  Aang danced around a well, avoiding the fire, but never shooting back, until he caught a glimpse of Katara’s necklace, dangling from the prince’s arm.
“You’ve got something I want.”  Aang told him.  He jumped forward, Zuko firing at him, while Aang used the well as an advantage, simply moving around in the small space, dodging his blows.  Zuko, becoming frustrated, broke the wood above the stone, getting rid of Aang’s leverage.  They danced around atop it, firing and dodging.  You huffed as Aang leapt into the air, diving into the well.  Zuko jumped atop it, sending a massive amount of fire into it.
“Aang!!”  You yelled, running over.  Your body told you not to, but you wouldn’t listen.  You stood next to Zuko.  “What did you do!?”
He didn’t get a chance to reply.  All the water in the well burst out, sending the two of you flying, Aang coming out and landing on the ground safely.  All the water looked like rain, as you fell to the ground, Zuko landing on your already damaged back.  You hollered in pain.  He scrambled off of you and charged Aang, only to turn and run when Appa started marching towards him, growling.  You bit your lip and stood, seeing Appa fall, also paralyzed.
“Appa!”  You yelled, rushing over.  You placed a hand on his soft fur.  You turned to the creature and glared.  He and Zuko currently had Aang stuck.  He could only run back and forth along the wall.  Zuko was shooting fire, and the creature would dart its tongue out of Aang came too close the other way.  You ran over and tripped Zuko from behind, giving Aang a chance to escape.  Zuko spun around, angry.  He began shooting at you, as you drew water from the puddles that Aang had made with the well water earlier, blocking the blows.
You weren’t moving too much, trying to keep your back pain as in control as possible.  He noticed this.  He shot a few quick bursts at you, and while you blocked them, he had leapt over you, and you bumped your back into his chest.  You held in a groan.  You started to pull away, but he made a dagger of fire, holding it to your neck, effectively keeping you there.  Your eyes widened as you looked at it.  He leaned down, his mouth right next to your ear.
“I’m only going easy on you because of what you did during the storm.”  He whispered.  You could feel his hot breath on your neck, but you swallowed down a shudder.  Or a gag.  You weren’t sure.  “Next time, expect no mercy.”
“This is going easy on me?”  You muttered back.  “I can’t wait to see what full out looks like.”  You mumbled, a hint of sarcasm in your voice.
“I’m one of the most powerful benders alive.”
“You have no control.”  You retorted, daring to turn your head and look at him.  “You’re a hot-head.”  He glared at you, throwing you on the ground.  Wait, what did I just say?  You asked yourself.  Those words sounded familiar.  Powerful bender.  Hot-head.  Your eyes widened in terror.  You rolled over and looked at a mad Zuko.  The words anger, hate and disgust rolled through your mind.  You nearly gagged at the thought.
“What’s wrong?”  Zuko asked, seeing the panicked look on your face.  “Scared of a ‘hot-head’?”  Those words were back.  He took menacing steps forward.
“No, I just remembered something.”  You admitted.
“What did you remember?”  He asked, still taking steps forward, making you back up.
You froze, having no clue how to respond.  “Something a fortuneteller told me.  It’s stupid, naturally.”
“What’d she tell you?  You’d lose?  It’s not stupid.”
“No, it’s not that.  It’s much worse.”  You said, pulling yourself to your feet.  You subtly gathered water together, collecting your strength.  Iroh watched from afar, unbeknownst to you.
“And what’s that?”
Now, you debated this back and forth in your mind, but seeing as you needed some way to distract him, this was about as good as it was gonna get.
“I fall in love.”  You replied simply, feeling yourself gather enough water.  Your words caused Zuko to stop his advancements.
“What does that have to do with-?”
He didn’t get to finish his sentence, as you flung water at him so hard, he flew into the nearest wall.  At this moment, Katara had bended all the barrels of perfume, and dumped it on the creature, its rider, and a fallen Zuko.  The creature shook his head, breathing heavily through its nose.  It moved around violently, striking Zuko with its tongue, making him collapse.  The creature attacked its owner as well.
“June!  No!”  Iroh shouted, catching her.  You cringed.  The creature ran around in circled, finally climbing over the wall and disappearing.  Aang picked up his staff again, and smiled at Sokka and Katara who had went over to greet him.  You bended some of the water, and began healing your back, biting back tears at the uncomfortable position.  When you had mostly healed it, you stood and walked over to where Zuko, Iroh and June lay.  You looked at them, your face a mix of strong confusion and something else you couldn’t place.  Iroh looked up at you, making you take a step back out of surprise.  He smiled kindly at you, making you forget all about your shock and confusion.
“I don’t suppose we’ll ever have that tea.”  You muttered, sitting down next to his head, next to Zuko’s as well.  “I don’t think we’ll ever have the time.  Or the freedom.”  You noted, looking down at your hands, which were playing with the ties on your shirt.  “Which is a shame, because I’d really like to get to know you.  And talk about…..some things.”  You added, quickly glancing at Zuko.  Iroh smiled.
“I’m sure we will, sooner or later.”
“I hope for sooner.  It’s kind of important.  But if my friends-” You stopped yourself, unwilling to think of their thoughts and faces if they found out anything you were withholding from them.  “You really seem like a kind man.  I don’t know how your brother turned out so bad.  But I can already see you have an effect on those around you.”  You said, glancing down at Zuko again.
“Ugh, can we stop with the cheese?  This is gross.”  June remarked.  “Honestly, as if loosing wasn’t bad enough-” You crossed your arms.
“If I’m not mistaken, you signed up for this.”  You stood.  “So next time you come after us, expect to lose.”  You turned to Iroh, your scowl turning into a smile immediately.  “It was very nice to see you again.  And thanks for all your help.”
“It was my pleasure.”
You turned to Zuko.  “Thank you for going easy on me.  You didn’t have to.”
“Just leave.”  He muttered, glaring.  You frowned slightly, for some reason feeling hurt by his words.  You turned.
“June, go rot in a ditch.”  You told her, standing and walking over to your friends.
“What were you doing over there?”  Sokka asked.
“Telling them to go rot in ditches.”  You half-lied.  Sokka smiled, patting you on the back.
“That’s my girl.”  He muttered, pulling his hand away when you winced slightly.  “Sorry.”  He muttered.
“It’s fine.”  You assured.  You climbed on a now recovered Appa, because of his size, he healed pretty quickly.  You flew over the earth at about sunset.
“So….where do we go?”  Aang asked.
“We’re getting you to the North Pole.”  Katara answered.
“Yeah.  We’ve lost too much time as it is.”  Sokka added.
“Don’t you want to see your father?”
“Of course we do, Aang.  But you and Y/n are our family, too.  But right now, you need us more.”  Sokka replied.
“And we need you.”  Katara added.  You were barely paying attention, though.  You were staring at the passing clouds in thought.  Were you really supposed to fall in love with Zuko?
“Y/n?  Y/n!?”
You spun around.
“Are you alright?”  Aang asked.  No.
“Yeah.”  You lied.  “Just thinking.”
“About what?”  Katara asked.  You smiled.
“How glad I am that there’s not as much room in this saddle.”  You said, pulling Katara and Sokka in for a hug.  They smiled and hugged you back.
“I wish I could give you a little piece of home, Katara.”  Aang started.  You knew what he was getting at.  “Something to remind you-”
“I’ll be okay.”
“Still!  Just a little trinket.  Maybe something like…..this?”  He said, pulling out her necklace.
“Aang!  How’d you get that!?”  She asked, putting it around her neck.  Sokka sat up and rubbed his eyes, making sure he was seeing what he thought he was.
“Zuko asked me to make sure I got it to you.”  Aang said.  Your mind flipped back to Aunt Wu, but you pushed that away.  You were currently just having fun with your friends.
“Aw.  That’s so sweet of Zuko.”  Katara said, fake adoration coming from her voice as she placed her hand mockingly on her chest.  “Will you give him a kiss for me when you see him?”
“Sure.”  Aang answered.  You burst out laughing, a snort following.
“Oh my word.”  You muttered.  Katara leaned forward and gave Aang a kiss on the cheek.  His face turned red as he twiddled him thumbs.  He, and Katara were smiling as yours fell.  You turned to Sokka.
“I’m sorry about your dad.”  You whispered.  A frown made its way onto his face as well.
“We’ll see him again.  I can feel it.”
“Are you sure you want to come with us?  I’m sure we could manage.”
“Thanks, but no.  You guys are going to need help.  Where would you be without my charming wit?”  He asked.  You grinned.
“Man, I missed you.”  You muttered, giving him a side-hug.  “I’m glad you’re back.”
“Glad to be back.”
Heyaa, when the requests are open can you maybe do a princess x Zuko where the princess is always clinging to Zuko when she's cold? Just a random thought that came into my mind since Zuko is a firebender hehe :)
pairing: zuko x princess!reader
a/n: this is technically part of the fire lilies series but can also be read as a solo piece independently
summary: princess and zuko go penguin sledding
~ part of the fire lilies series ~
Tumblr media
The rush of cold wind against your cheeks is exhilarating as you glide down the snow covered hills. Your delighted laughter carries through the air and brings a smile to Zuko’s face as you enjoy a day penguin sledding out in the palace courtyards.
Being kidnapped by Gilak and having your life threatened once again had been a traumatic experience for both you and your boyfriend, so Hakoda and your mother had advised you take a much needed day off for yourself. He could handle the work of drafting plans for an eco friendly oil rig and the foreign embassies while Pakku and Katara took on the school for the time being. Though you were hesitant to take a day off knowing there was so much to be done, Zuko had been the one to finally convince you that you desperately needed a break.
Today would be his last day in the South before he had to return home, and so you figured the best way to spend your time together would be with a trip through memory lane. You hadn’t been penguin sledding together since you were kids, so it seemed like a good idea to both of you to revisit your favorite pastime from when you were children.
You slow to a stop as you reach the end of the hill and land onto the plush snow below you with a laugh. The chill of the ice sends shivers down your spine but you choose to ignore it. All the back and forth traveling you’ve been doing hasn’t allowed your body the chance to acclimate to the weather of your home yet, but you try not to let it bother you.
“Having fun?” Zuko asks with a laugh as he helps you up off the snow. You immediately cling to his figure in an attempt to steal some of his heat, prompting the Fire Lord to raise a brow as he wraps his arms around your frame. “You’re not getting cold, are you?”
“Of course not,” you scoff indignantly, though your subtle trembling says otherwise.
“Maybe we should head inside-“
“No!” You immediately cry out in protest before he can finish his sentence. “We’ve hardly just begun the day. Don’t you want to keep penguin sledding?”
“Of course I do,” he assures you with a comforting kunik, “but I worry the cold might be too much for you.
“Too much?! I’m Chief of the Southern Water Tribe, I don’t get cold.”
“Alright,” Zuko relents with a chuckle at your adamant rebuttal. For a water bender you’re surprisingly stubborn, but he loves your headstrong nature more than anything. “Let’s keep sledding.”
Your face lights up with glee when he finally relents and allows you to carefully pick up your penguin and carry him back up the hill while showering the creature with praises and pets. He’d forgotten just how much you enjoyed the activity, and it was nice to see that same smile from your childhood again. It had been years since you both went sledding, since you both were just two kids unaware of what the future held in store for you, since you both were free of fear and responsibility and hurt. The war had taken a lot from you, forced you both to grow up too fast, so he was grateful for the fact that you both could just be kids again, even if only for a day.
“Y/n,” Zuko calls as the sun begins to set and the day begins to end, “I think it’s time we head inside for dinner. Your mother said she was making five-flavor soup for us.”
“Just one more time down the hill?” You plead with your best pout, though you know it doesn’t take much to convince Zuko to give in to your requests.
“Alright, but that’s it,” he tells you with a chuckle before following you up the hill. The courtyard lanterns begin to glow beautifully below as the moon starts to overtake the sky, and you exchange playful smiles with one another before beginning your decent down the snow.
Zuko’s hair blows wildly away from his face, his grin the biggest you’ve ever seen it, and you’re so caught up in admiring him that you don’t even notice the large pile of snow you’re about to crash into.
“Princess, look out!” Zuko tries to warn you, but it’s too late. You can do nothing but pull the penguin to your chest and shield it from the impact as you collide into the snowy mound. The Fire Lord winces on your behalf before quickly rushing to your aid. The otter penguin emerges after a moment and shakes the snow off its body before waddling away, but you fail to do the same. Zuko has to dig through the slush to pull you out, and as he lifts you up and into his arms he’s able to feel just how cold to the touch you are.
“Th-Thhere’s s-snow e-every-wh-where,” you complain through chattering teeth as you wrap your arms as tightly around his neck as possible in a desperate attempt to feel his warmth.
“Let’s get you inside before you freeze to death,” he comforts while carrying your trembling figure back inside the palace. If not for Zuko’s body heat, you’d surely already be feeling the effects of hypothermia taking place.
Thankfully, your boyfriend is able to swiftly make it back inside the palace and carry you through the halls towards your room. The heat of Zuko’s embrace melts the ice inside your clothes, but the dampness only seems to worsen the feeling of cold. You shiver incessantly, and he can only look on guiltily as he tries his best to ease your discomfort.
Finally, he swings the door to your bedroom open and carefully sets you back on your feet before helping you remove your heavy coat. He sets the wet material aside to dry before coming up to your trembling figure and rubbing his hands up and down your arms in an attempt to spread heat across your limbs.
“I’ll go find your mother and tell her what happened. You stay here and get out of those clothes before you catch a cold,” he advises you with a meek smile, a red blush tinting his cheeks when he realizes he probably should have phrased his sentence more delicately. Zuko presses a tender kiss to your forehead before leaving to give you your privacy and shutting the door behind him.
Your skin feels like ice as you peel off the rest of your ensemble as quickly as you can. You were so used to beach days at Ember Island and swims in the lakes with your friends that you’d forgotten just how cold the water could be. Considering you grew up in the South, you’re a tad embarrassed to know how easily it gets to you now. You’d been away for so long, and even when you returned home you still found yourself venturing out often, so a part of you wondered if maybe you’d never fully readjust to the climate.
“Y/n?” A voice calls from the other side of the door followed by a gentle knock. “Zuko sent me to check on you. I have the warmest blanket I could find. May I come in?”
“Just a second, Mom,” you reply as you scramble to throw on a fresh set out of clothes and make yourself decent for visitors. After slipping into the warmest dress you can find, you open the door and allow her into your room.
“Someone got a little carried away penguin sledding, I hear,” she says with a teasing smile before draping the blanket around your shoulders. “You’re like ice! Thank spirits Zuko has that natural fire bending warmth to him or you might have frozen out there!”
“Yeah,” you murmur in agreement with a dejected frown, one that your mother notices right away.
“My little koala otter, what’s the matter?”
“I’m just a little embarrassed, I guess,” you admit with a sheepish laugh. “I thought I’d gotten over my aversion to the cold.”
“I think anyone who managed to get snow in their clothes would be cold,” she notes with a faint smile before pressing a kiss to your forehead. “I’m just happy to see you having fun again. You had to grow up very fast, something your father and I should have worked harder to prevent, so it’s nice to hear your laugh again and see you sledding like you did as a little girl.”
You smile at her words before pulling her into a tight hug, hoping the action conveys all your appreciation for her. Zuko walks in then with a tray of steaming five-flavor soup and tea in the hopes it will return some of your warmth to you.
“I’ll let you both enjoy your dinner alone,” she says after removing herself from your embrace. Exiting the room, she pauses to give Zuko’s arm a light squeeze. “Make sure she stays warm.”
“Yes, Kira,” he replies with a nod before returning his attention to you. “Let’s get you settled in.”
Setting the tray aside, Zuko escorts you back to bed and tucks the blanket around your figure as best as he can with you sitting up. Once you’re comfortable, he presses a tender kiss to your forehead before handing you the cup of tea. It’s the same cup from the set Iroh had gifted you some time ago, and the sight of it brings a faint smile to your face as you take in the smell of jasmine.
“You’re already starting to feel warmer,” Zuko notes pleasantly before trading your cup for the bowl of soup. “I should have warned you about that pile of snow sooner.”
“It’s okay, I don’t regret a thing. I had so much fun today, the most I’ve had in a while. I wish you didn’t have to leave tomorrow.”
“Don’t worry,” Zuko assures you as he uses his bending to reheat your tea before it can grow cold, “the day will come where we’ll never have to be apart ever again.”
“I can’t wait,” you confess with a smile only for it to fall at the sudden sneeze that leaves you.
“I think you might be catching a cold, my love,” Zuko notes with a frown.
“Will you stay and keep me warm?” You ask with a pleading look, one that makes it impossible for him to deny your request. How could he say no to your sweet face?
Climbing into bed with you, Zuko envelops himself around your figure and allows you to steal his warmth. He’ll never get tired of being your personal heater, and he’d be happy to spend the rest of his days like this.
You’ll never reacclimatize to the cold, because no matter where you go, Zuko will always be there to bring warmth to your life.
